KYLIE ALCORN, THE ECLECTIC MIX (VINTAGE STORE & CAFE)

A lifetime of collecting and a 20-year desire to open a Vintage Shop saw Kylie open the Eclectic Mix in April 2022. Collecting was always a family love, and Kylie herself started out with old buttons and china.

The Eclectic Mix lives up to its name, with a scooter parked in prime position out the front. On entry, the store is bulging with quality pre-loved items - books, buttons, much loved teddies and retro toys, with an array of pre-digital cameras sitting alongside ‘good china’, cut crystal glasses and bowls.

Kylie’s retail background of over 33 years saw her in good stead to open the ‘Mix’. From managing high-end retail stores to charity shops, she has a natural connection with customers. This is reflected in the Edith Street premises which has a deep focus on community.

From a place to chat; a community jigsaw collection, a resident artist and monthly tea leaf reading (at which many customers arrive skeptical for a bit of fun, but leave curiously interested in what has been revealed to them).

Kylie’s commitment to customer service saw her being a proud finalist in the 2023 Queensland Community Achievement Awards.

A HAPPY ACCIDENT

FROM CASUAL WORK TO MANAGING PARTNER

A happy ‘accident’ is how Jess Nguyen describes her career in Pharmacy. Jess applied for causal work at the Manly Village Compounding Pharmacy in 2008 and was mentored by owners Di & Tien. She grew to love the sector and went on to achieve a Bachelor in Pharmacy in 2016. She then became managing partner in 2021

A compounding pharmacy uses the traditional methods of mixing individualised medications for a specific patient, usually symbolised by the image of a mortar and pestle. Jess says that although we now use modern machinery and equipment, there is often still the need to pull out the old mortar and pestle to crush grainy ingredients before mixing.

Jess has a special interest in natural therapies and is keen to treat her patients ailments ‘as a whole’ rather than only relying on prescription medicines. Good nutrition and lifestyle are key elements in treating many conditions including menopause.

The Manly Village Compounding Pharmacy underwent a major redevelopment in 2023, with the installation of ‘Wally the Robot’. Wally is an automated stock and dispensing machine that has saved the pharmacy’s staff countless hours completing stock receiving tasks.

The pharmacy staff are a familiar sight to customers in the suburb of Manly and beyond, with their dedicated and experienced team having up to 22 years’ experience and service in the area. Staff member Judy is a weekly visitor to many local homes, supplying medicine to those who find it difficult to leave their homes.

Pets often also require compounded medicines mixed in different forms, strengths and flavours. While cats and dogs are the most common, the pharmacy has helped animals of all sizes, from rats to horses.

Jess’s commitment to the ‘Village’ has seen her become an active part of the Manly Harbour Village Chamber of Commerce. She was appointed Secretary of the committee in 2023 and was a key host in a recent Allied Health Networking Event. Growing up in Wynnum Manly, she is very familiar with the Bayside community and sees herself very lucky to be in Manly Harbour Village, not just for the wonderful location but its people.

35

PLAYGROUNDS

Wynnum’s Whale Park and Pandanus Beach offer a delightful day out for families. Whale Park, with its iconic whale-themed water play area, is perfect for younger children, featuring fountains, splash pads, and climbing frames. Pandanus Beach provides a sandy retreat where kids can build sandcastles or have a little paddle in calm

waters. In Manly, Bayside Park and Manly Playground cater to a wider age range. Bayside Park has large grassy areas perfect for kicking a ball around, BBQ facilities, and areas ideal for skating and scootering.

Manly Playground boasts a nautical theme with slides, swings, and a pirate ship play structure. These parks are ideal for toddlers to teens, ensuring fun for all ages.

BULKA BOOANGUN

CALLING THE DOLPHINS

Initially built in 1884, Wynnum Jetty has been extensively rebuilt over the years.

In 2005 the jetty got a makeover with the official opening of the Quandamooka Art Project.

An initiative of the Rotary Club of Wynnum and Manly and local Winnam Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Corporation, a public design competition was conducted to create a symbol of goodwill and mutual respect. Paul Songhust won with his design ‘Bulka Booangun: Calling the Dolphins’ which revolves around telling a story of place, people, time and tide.

It also recognises the traditional fishing practice of the local indigenous peoples with sculptures and in-ground artworks. The impressive jetty entrance is a timber and ceramic ‘totem’ sculpture made from three recycled hardwood pylons. “This sculpture reflects on a connection between land and

sea, a connection with the senses, to the past, present and future, a connection to the processes of reconciliation, cooperation and sustainability and importantly an opportunity to open one’s mind for the journey ahead.”

The totem is a nod to the original timber jetty but also identifies with the tall trees which once grew in the area. It also represents the Quandamooka fishermen who would wade in the Bay waters to call the dolphins. Upon hearing the men clap their spears and slap the waters, the dolphins would herd the fish into gutters where rows of tow row nets were set to catch the fish. “This special way of fishing was celebrated in a corroboree called Bulka Booangun.” *

Songhust’s design incorporates six in ground ceramic panels which explore the concepts of “Flotsam and Jetsam,”

“Time and Tide”, and the connection between land and sea.

MANLY LIGHTS UP

Visit the foreshore plaza at Manly Harbour Village at night for a truly immersive childfriendly experience. This creative placemaking initiative, led by artist Delvene Cockatoo-Collins, features four distinct projection designs that tell the stories of Manly through the lens of indigenous perspectives and the local environment.

The “Tawalpin” series, highlights the native flora that thrives along the Quandamooka coastline. “Quandamooka Sea Life,” brings attention to the yungan (dugong) and bunbiya (turtle), iconic marine animals of the bay. “Along the Foreshore” depicts the diverse ecosystems of mudflats and mangroves. Lastly, the “From the Hills to the Bay” series portrays the landscape’s transition from the hills to the water’s edge, showing the region’s layered natural history and the abundant birdlife.

Experience the magic of the Manly Harbour Christmas Lights competition in December. Stroll down Cambridge Parade and marvel at the festive displays as all the shops light up in holiday cheer. The real highlight, though, is the beautifully decorated boats in the harbour, creating a mesmerizing nighttime spectacle. Wander along the Esplanade, where fairy light-adorned trees add to the enchantment. Many harbourside businesses and homes join in, transforming the area into a Christmas wonderland. Perfect for a family night out, this event is not only festive but also incredibly Instagram-worthy, making it a must-visit during the holiday season.
