BRISBANE’S SEASIDE ON BEAUTIFUL MORETON BAY Wynnum and Manly are well known for their unique shopping villages, though it is the beautiful foreshores and sheltered bay which attract countless visitors to the Bayside. Many escape the city and outer suburbs looking for cool breezes, calm waters and the abundance of wildlife. Moreton Bay Marine Park is one of the largest estuarine bays in Australia. With a combination of tidal wetlands, intertidal flats, mangroves, saltmarshes, seagrass and changing sandbanks, it provides a range of unique habitats for marine and bird life for which Moreton Bay is recognised worldwide.

It boasts a variety of both tropical and temperate marine animals such as turtles, sharks, rays, and dolphins, and is home to dugongs with the marine park ranked among the top dugong habitats in Australia. Many walkers can be heard gleefully crying in excited yelps when a shy dugong surfaces or a turtle pops up to say hello or a sole dolphin sails into Manly Harbour. The bay’s mudflats and protected wetlands also support a significant population of resident and migratory shorebirds. When the tide is out it is rare not to see hundreds of wading birds darting across the flats using their long beaks to dip into the mud looking for worms and small crustaceans. It is especially inspiring to see flocks of these birds simultaneously take flight and skim across the water, dipping and swooping before disappearing around the point. With over seven kilometres of foreshore, along with two boardwalks - the Wynnum Mangrove Boardwalk linking to a bird hide - it provides the ideal viewing opportunity to birdwatch.

For those who want to venture out on the water, the sheltered waters around the foreshores are relatively shallow and perfect for kayaking, canoeing and stand-up paddle boarding. There are a number of boat ramps making it easy to go offshore. No boat… no worries. Local operators provide a great variety of adventures. With so many ways to explore Moreton Bay Marine Park why not give yourself more time and stay a while? VisitWynnumManly.com has more information on how to explore the Bay.

MY PERFECT DAY Drop kids off at local schools and continue my 5-minute commute to work to the Flinders building. Grab a coffee on the way in from the lovely ladies and head up to the third floor to the offices of Central Business Associates and its shared workspaces enjoying the beautiful views of the bay & islands. Work and a brainstorming session with other local business owners to resolve a common issue. Head out for lunch, picking up an amazing chicken salad from Keba-bzone. Pop into Cultivate Design to buy a last-minute home wares gift for a friend.

Afternoon is work, making sure I don’t get distracted by the views and the networking opportunities. Then out for school pickups and down to Wynnum waterfront. Kids play in the playground, then pick up some hot chips & calamari at the Pelicans Nest. Maybe some delicious gelato from Matilda’s in Edith Street. Pop in for a glass of wine in Cedar & Pine; have an evening stroll back to the water-front and pier for sunset, listening to the waves lapping under the warm night sky . Home time knowing I get do a variation of it all again tomorrow, & every day... Celia Newlands, Owner Central Business Associates

STYLE Shop Local, Shop in Wynnum Manly Our obsession with everything organic, raw, uncut, whole and earthy has moved beyond our food choices to our décor and fashion choices. Think silk, linen, soft cotton, billowy, cool, light and breezy fibres. Think glass, ceramics, marble and wood pieces which speak of sustainability and Slow Movement shifts. This is the trend and Wynnum Manly shop owners are on board. The boutiques and home décor stores in the bayside village offer quality unique pieces which connect. With mass market, cheap fads consumers are easily swayed to buy in haste and buy in bulk. It is time to Think Global, Shop Local Whether it be fashion or home décor, from French boho to Hampton chic, casual beach parties to high class soirees – an outfit for a special occasion with jewellery to match or furnishings to jazz up a room. There really is something for everyone.

Personal service is a given as each shop owner is happy to assist in choosing, bags, hats or shoes, for matching soft furnishing or something exceptional to give as a gift. That’s what shopping locally represents – nostalgic and knowledgeable service often from small retail owners who are connected and in tune with their customers. And for that pre-loved and retro bargain enjoy the hunt and discovery at the several charity shops in the Wynnum Manly CBD. Best of all, when your feet need a rest you can stop for a coffee or cool beverage, grab a book from the local village bookstore and take a break.

WHAT’S IN A NAME... “Tingalpa” is an Aboriginal term and refers to “place of fat kangaroo”. It was the name given for the local area when it was surveyed in 1859. In the 1860’s, the land was divided into allotments and offered for auction at prices from as little as one pound an acre. The first surveyor of the district named the future township Wynnum - from the Aboriginal word for the fruit of the bread tree - place of the pandanus palm - “winnam”. In 1862, William White acquired a large tract of land following the subdivision. He built a grand house and named it for his wife’s birthplace, Lota in Cork, Ireland. Lota House gave its name to the surrounding area and a number of nearby streets bear the name of the house’s occupants, including Whites Road. Manly was the name given to the subdivision of Manly Beach Estate in 1882 and took its name from the bayside suburb in Sydney. The opening of the railway line from Brisbane to Cleveland coincided with the opening of the Waterloo Bay Hotel, and opened the district up as a popular seaside resort. The bayside area underwent a boom and land was further subdivided into housing estates. Many of the streets in these new estates are named after the local land developers or land owner and their families, military commanders or Indigenous sources. To add an air of sophistication and grace, the streets in the Rose Bay Estate were given the names of poets and authors, whilst streets leading to the sea on the Manly Beach Estate are named after military personnel.     Â?  DOG WALKING Brisbane City Council is currently conducting a Foreshore Off Leash Dog trial at the end of Davenport Drive between the fishing platform and RQYS Port Centre Park. The trial is in consideration of guidelines for establishing off leash areas in marine parks and is sensitive to shorebirds and their habitat. The trial is scheduled to run until October 2020. This trial site is in addition to the Wynnum, Manly and Lota’s existing off leash parks, along with the kilometres of foreshore walking paths. In keeping with Wynnum and Manly’s dog friendly approach, both the Jan Powers Farmers Market and Manly Creative Markets welcome your furry friends... as does the appropriately named Frenchies Cafe in Wynnum.

Fantastic Result – Highly Recommend (Luke & Lisa M) Sale of 323 Upper Esplanade, Manly Having known Travis & Tandi Gill working and living in the local community for many years, and their experience in the real estate industry, we contacted them to sell our prestige home on the Esplanade. We found them to have the marketing skills and local property knowledge, along with high end buyer contacts who were currently looking for prestige property. Travis & Tandi reached out to specific buyers and secured a great result. The process right up to settlement went smoothly and we couldn’t be happier. Best agents in the area (Casey & Brett S) Sale of 113 Ernest Street, Manly I cannot recommend more highly the excellent service and professionalism of Tandi Gill an her team. Our house was creatively marketed and resulted in a quick stress free sale. We have used the team for all our buying and selling of houses and will continue to do so in the future. It’s been great to have peace of mind and Tandi’s lovely smile throughout all my past campaigns. Best Agent and Team in Manly. Exceptional agents (Michelle & Russell A) Sale of 90 Grattan Tce, Manly Tandi and Travis were enthusiastic about marketing the property from the outset. Tandi was an exceptional communicator keeping us informed after each open home and throughout the progress of the contract. We have bought and sold other houses and never has an agent provided us with such comprehensive written feedback and updates. Tandi and Travis knew the local market very well and provided an accurate appraisal. Professional & warm manner driving excellent result (Michael & Kathryn P) Sale of 365 Esplanade, Manly Tandi provided a professional and warm manner throughout. An excellent result driven by a motivated and effective approach. We highly recommend Tandi and her team. Skilled, knowledgeable and respectful (Anita W) Sale of 26 Stewart Parade, Manly Throughout the whole sale process Tandi listened to and respected all of my wishes regarding the sale of my property. It was important to me that my excellent tenants were not disrupted unnecessarily throughout the sale process. Tandi and her team honoured these wishes, and my tenants commented on how great RE/MAX had been to them throughout the sales process. I managed to get a price for my property in a short period of time that I was very happy with. I believe it was Tandi’s sales skills that achieved this price.

The Gill Team, lead by Tandi and Travis Gill (siblings), are a local second generation real estate family who target their energies on exceeding buyer and seller expectations and driving the area forward. A massive focus on giving back to the community is also what drives The Gill Team to succeed. The Gill Team has been instrumental in raising hundreds of thousands of dollars over the past 2 decades for local schools and sporting facilities as well as charities.

Every fortnight I volunteer at Pandora’s Thrift Shop from 9am to 12pm. The ladies who volunteer are all parishioners of St Peter’s Anglican Church. I was Baptised and married at the church as were my five children. My husband, Arch, is interred in the rose garden so it is a familiar community I have there.

Pandora’s Thrift Shop Pick up a bargain at this great pre-loved shop next to St Peters in Wynnum. This shop raises funds to ďŹ nancially support the Wynnum community as well as our ongoing outreach programs. Donations welcome.

After my shift at the thrift shop my daughter takes me out for a cup of chai latte. Frankies on Fox Street has very nice chai and parking is easy, especially as I now use a walker. I have also discovered the wonderful waffles served at Ground Hog Social on the Esplanade at Manly. Sometimes, my grandson takes me out for a treat. He and I both enjoy acai bowls. Bare Naked Bowls is very pleasant and handy. Can you tell I have a sweet tooth? After a bite to eat, we drive along the foreshores. I have lived in the area for 92 years and it is very exciting to see the changes with new apartments and homes being developed. I grew up in Manly so I am very eager to see what it will look like when it is complete. Nena Robertson Wynnum
