Wynnum Profile Gail Webb, Owner & Manager, Simply Bella Boutique

Managing a boutique and dealing with death as a Funeral Director is anything but traditional for most of us, but for Gail she has a natural ability to manage both. The roles have similar elements in the need to listen, provide advice and also take care for the client or customer. Gail has this in abundance running both her Bay Terrace Wynnum boutique with its diverse and colourful wares, and providing a very personal funeral service to those on the southern Moreton Bayside and Islands.

Gail has always loved fashion starting out working in a boutique in South Australia. At

just 25 years of age she bought the boutique and ran this before a move to Sydney where she literally ‘worked in shoes’. There a friend saw her kind and compassionate nature so suggested she worked in the funeral industry.

With initial mixed feelings following the loss of her mother at a young age, she began to enjoy learning of the different cultures and helping people at a time of need.

She has brought this experience of patience and empathy as a Funeral Director to many on the Bayside, particularly amongst the indigenous community with her understanding as a former Bay Island resident.

Gail moved to Queensland initially to Manly in 1989 and ran a vintage recycled clothing and accessories shop in the West End before

opening Bellabeachie boutique at Wellington Point and then some five years ago Simply Bella on Bay Terrace, Wynnum.

She describes the Simply Bella offerings as eclectic and colourful with something new and fabulous for her customers. In 2021 she added a slice of the artistic island life with a gallery opening at the rear of the shop. Art classes are now on offer to add to the creative vibe.

Gail is on first name terms with many customers - as they are with her. That’s what she loves about Wynnum - the personal contact with nearly all shops and cafes selfowned and operated. “There is something for everyone in Wynnum from medical services to interesting shops” she says. “Shopping local helps keeps jobs local.” She adds.

“We have a loyal local following” says Richard “with visitor’s from across Greater Brisbane plus beers supplied to 18 bottle shops.”

It’s a “relaxed” vibe at their Gibbs Street brewery and outlet accompanied by fresh beer with a variety of food trucks outside on the Thursday to Sunday opening times.

There are plans to extend the premises to the rear and employ more staff. A monthly comedy night has added to the great vibe.

Owner Manager Mad Hatters Bookshop

Now owner and manager since 2019 of Mad Hatters Bookshop she admits that she had never set foot into the store, thinking it catered more for children. She heard of a job going and joined original owner Ann-Marie in managing the bookshop, eventually taking an ever more hands on role.

A lifelong love of books brought Laura to her dream job of owning and managing her very own Magical and Enchanted world.

That’s her description of the Mad Hatters Bookshop. Set in the heart of Manly Harbour Village ‘Mad Hatters’ is an eclectic mix of books that attracts the young and older reader alike.

Laura grew up in a family that valued a good education and she devoured books from an early age. Working in a bookshop was her dream job. She self-taught herself photography and ran a wedding photography business for several years after high school. Laura combined work and study with an Arts Degree specialising

Laura says the shop name owes itself to Ann-Marie’s love of Alice in Wonderland who, using her illustrator background, set out to create a Magical and Enchanted world focused mainly on children. The addition of a Harry Potter room with books and paraphernalia has added to this Magical World.

Adults are drawn to the bookshop with its

new releases, wide range of books and the chance to chat with Laura and her team on recommendations. It’s this personal service Laura says that makes visiting a bookshop an experience enjoying “the tactile feel of a book”.

She sees the future of books bright especially amongst children with parents and grandparents buying them as gifts and Mad Hatters bringing pop-up bookshops to many schools. This connection with children has led to a second edition of ‘Whimsical Tales’ being published with a cross section of short stories from 7–14-year-olds from Wynnum Manly.

“The genres covered were from Gothic Horror to Historical Fiction with Magical Realism” says Laura, showing that young imagination is as strong as ever.

She loves the Village feel of Manly where shop owners and customers know each other. Keeping this community vibe alive Laura believes will be the ongoing strength of Manly Harbour Village.

MANLY MARINA COVE Prior to the Tokyo Olympics, the Manly Marina Cove Motel were the hosts for the Australian Paralympic Cycle Team. For 3 weeks, athletes, coaches and staff stayed at the Motel – even while enduring one of many Brisbane lockdowns due to Covid19. They dined locally and trained at the Anna Meares Velodrome and local streets in preparation for their competition at the Paralympic Games. Congratulations to all – total 4 Gold, 4 Silver and 5 Bronze won.

The effort, determination and spirit showed by all in the lead up and during the Games was inspirational. The Manly Marina Cove Motel will be a much sought after accommodation provider for the 2032 Olympic Games – with sailing and cycling events held locally.

DID YOU KNOW ? - GEORGE CLAYTON PARK The park at Darling Point where many a birthday, wedding and fair has been held is named George Clayton Park in honour of former Alderman George Clayton who represented the local area for five years back in 1952. There are some locals who may remember George from his political achievements, but did you know George was also a keen sporting enthusiast closely associated with Rugby League and cricket in Wynnum’s early days?

As a young lad working in the Gympie gold mines George lost his sight in one eye as a result of a workplace accident. This prevented George from enlisting to serve alongside his mates during World War 1 Instead, George hit the road looking for work and in 1920, whilst visiting relatives in Wynnum, a mate told him of a job laying pipes in Wynnum’s first water main. This was the change George was looking for and ultimately led to him working construction on the water reservoir on Roles Hill, Manly. For the next 20 years he was employed with the Brisbane City Council Water Board In 1952, a strong Labor following had George elected to the Brisbane City Council, as Alderman.

An office he held for five years.
