Protecting your merchant account from fraud. Preventing merchant fraud – from using stolen credit cards to stealing whole identities – is an important part of protecting your business. Recognising it, however, isn’t always easy. Here’s what you can do to help prevent your employees from falling victim to fraudsters. Fraud can happen to any business that accepts debit and credit cards. Your employees are the first line of defence for detecting fraud and you need to have a plan in place. Scammers are sophisticated and always working hard to make some easy money. Falling victim to a scam, however, can have significant financial and reputational impact on your business. Preventing fraud comes down to vigilance.

Preventing scams before they happen Educating your staff about different scams – and keeping watch for new techniques – is the most essential way to prevent fraud. This includes ways to verify that the cardholder is the person making the transaction as well as watching for suspicious behaviours. Raising anything out of the ordinary should be flagged and looked at more closely.

There are also things you can do from an organisational perspective to limit your exposure, including maintaining a secure customer database that tracks things like buying patterns, addresses and customer behaviours. For instance, if someone regularly orders a few hundred dollars’ worth of products to an address in Sydney and is suddenly ordering thousands of dollars to an address in Melbourne, it’s probably worth a closer look. Setting up an orders approval and fulfilment process for new employees and new customers requesting high value items, which gives you time to verify the legitimacy of the order, can be very useful in preventing fraud. Having these procedures in place can work no matter how you process payment, including through a website, in-store EFTPOS or over-the-phone.

Preventing fraud after the sale Sometimes fraud is committed after the sale, like when someone uses a terminal to issue a refund when there’s no corresponding sale. This can be done by employees crediting refunds to the accounts of friends and family. Protecting against this fraud starts with processing refunds to the same card that was used for the original sale.

A chargeback happens when a cardholder disputes a transaction. This can be when the card was stolen but also can happen for duplicate transactions or when a merchant doesn’t supply the goods and services that were promised but doesn’t provide a refund. Ensuring that the goods went out and were delivered is an important way to verify that the transaction went through.

Keep constantly aware Keeping your merchant account safe from fraud requires constant vigilance. Staying scam aware is an essential part of protecting your business. You have the responsibility to verify that the cardholder is genuine and protect all aspects of the transaction.

Being vigilant is an important part of protecting your merchant account. How fintechs can avoid falling victim to financial crime Fintechs may be at the forefront of financial innovation but they’re also increasingly financial crime targets. We sat down with Ali Zoabi, the APAC Director for Arctic Intelligence, an award-winning Regulatory Technology (RegTech) company that helps protect businesses from financial crime, including money laundering, terrorism financing, bribery and corruption. With Arctic Intelligence’s expertise tailored to the fintech and startup banking sector, Zoabi provides insights into how this booming Australian industry can avoid falling victim to financial crime and what current trends tell us about the industry’s future risks. What are the most worrying financial crime trends you’ve seen recently? In general, financial crime is increasing at an alarming rate. A 2021 survey by PwC UK found that economic crime had reached its highest level in the past two years last year, with up to 56% of surveyed UK firms stating they were impacted by fraud, corruption and other forms of financial crime. As global financial crime has risen, AUSTRAC has adjusted to COVID-19 by providing more specific guidance to reporting entities. In particular, conventional transactional organised crime schemes, which usually take advantage of global supply chains, are increasingly forced to diversify further into fraud and cybercrime in response to this economic change. How are financial criminals targeting fintechs in particular? And what puts them at greater risk?

12

Ali Zoabi APAC Director Arctic Intelligence One of the clear factors that can drive financial crime up exponentially in the digital world is its borderless landscape. Due to this borderless nature, the practice of targeting fintechs can be scaled up dramatically. On top of that, many startups and fintechs are at a higher risk due to limited resources. Why is it important for fintechs to assess their financial crime risks? The rush into remote workplaces is one of the major factors why fintechs need to assess their financial crime

AUSTRALIAN BUSINESS FORUM | WINTER ISSUE

risks. On one side, a move to the digital world may simplify many financial processes and transactions for the user. On the other side, this great migration online comes with significant challenges and potential consequences for the company. As many processes, such as onboarding, were required to be done online and remotely during the pandemic, this potentially opened the door to some dark actors. Many fintechs’ increasing reliance on the internet puts them at risk, including working from less safe environments to access business-sensitive systems, as opposed to an office environment. These hybrid working methods are likely to be sustained, giving greater exposure to internet-enabled frauds and cybercrime. So, this will need to be addressed with new or adapted controls to lessen the risk of compromised systems and people who use them.

What are 3 best practices every fintech can take to address financial crime risks? 1.

Controls: What controls are in place, to guard against these risks? How effective. are these controls? Around Anti Money Laundering, Fraud, Cyber Crime in particular.

2.

Employee Awareness & Training: Employee Training, Employee Screening, Employee Empowerment.

3.

Culture: it starts from the top.

4.

Noteworthy third - Seek advice: most problems have already been solved. Ask the professionals.

What’s the ‘compliance revolution’? There is a global movement away from spreadsheets, towards software. This software assists in preventing and detecting financial crime, more efficiently and effectively. If you are a fintech or startup, then chances are you are using software to disrupt an existing market. With this in mind, why would you use spreadsheets to solve complex financial crime problems, rather than using software?

Creating a seamless eCommerce experience to scale your business

The ability to engage with customers on whichever platforms they prefer used to be an afterthought or perhaps even a luxury. It was not until recently that we experienced a shift in this sentiment – pre-pandemic, 59% of Australian small businesses operated without a website. However, as consumers’ shopping and payment preferences continue to evolve rapidly, so too does the need to provide a seamless customer experience – be it online, in-store or a clever combination of both. Businesses at the forefront of eCommerce innovations have reaped the benefits in revenue growth and enhanced customer experiences. And those who have fallen behind in their digital transformation journeys now feel the critical impact of legacy processes. As we shift away from the age-old, traditional brickand-mortar presence, a hybrid business model will start to take preference and open new growth opportunities. At the centre of this evolution are modern payments innovations, working quietly in the background of your eCommerce platform to unify disparate systems, enable business efficiency, enhance customer experience and, ultimately, future-proof your business.

The shift to eCommerce 4.0 While retailers, hospitality venues and other businesses witness an organic return to in-person experiences, consumers now have broader expectations from companies. Human interactions remain a critical differentiator and a crucial part of the customer experience but online, and in-app shopping experiences are becoming increasingly popular, giving rise to the hybrid consumer.

Modern Payment Solutions Central to this new era of eCommerce are modern payment solutions that go beyond the payment step itself. Previously reserved for larger enterprises, payment fintech disruptors, like Till, are offering sophisticated and robust end-to-end payments solutions that enable businesses of all shapes and sizes to harness the power of their business and transactional data. Tech-driven capabilities offer integrations to business systems to enable automation and increase efficiency, whilst simple plug-and-play infrastructure provides an all-access pass to invaluable insights into your customer and business. With strategic partnerships, SMBs can tap into compliant, pioneering payments technologies that deliver on customer demands in a simple, scalable, and accessible way.

A new era calls for new ways to pay (and get paid.) Wherever you are in your business journey, futureproofing your eCommerce capabilities with a unified payments ecosystem will equip you for success in this new era.

Why are Aussies crypto-curious… but not committing? A survey by Gemini reveals that over two in five crypto owners in Australia first started investing in crypto in 2021.

About 81% of Australian crypto investors choose to hold their crypto investments for the long term with more than half of Australian crypto investors surveyed viewing cryptocurrency as a good way to diversify their assets. While Australia’s crypto adoption rate is similar to western nations like the US and the UK, the country lags in terms of adoption in comparison to other APAC countries surveyed, such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia and India. Australia’s investor and tax rules must keep pace with the rapid innovation in the $US2 trillion crypto market, as a chorus of business leaders told The Australian Financial

Review Cryptocurrency Summit that an explosion of new business models and investment had grown too large to be considered fringe. “Banks are getting to the point where they are willing to connect those two systems,” said Kain Warwick, Young Rich Lister and found of Synthetix, an early crypto derivatives platform governed by 85,000 users. “It makes sense that banks will be the primary point where that connectivity is most effective, and that is the opportunity for forward-thinking banks.” Nevertheless, Statistics show that more than 800,000 Australians transacted in crypto assets in the last 3 years, with an increase of 63% between 2021 and 2020.So much is crypto now becoming a part of everyday Australians’ investments, that the Federal Government this month issued a Consultation Paper inviting comment on the longawaited introduction of a regulatory framework for crypto investment services.
