UMD is one of the most unique campuses in the US. Originally envisioned by world renowned architect, Paul Rudolph, the campus is based on the idea of an agora of learning with residential neighborhoods around it. The master plan proposes new first and second year communities with a mix of academic and student life spaces situated close in to the core resulting in a more connected community.

"you never get a second chance to make a first impression" DePauw University*

Small rural campuses must work extra hard to bring in students. DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana is a true gem, but the first time visitor experience did not reinforce that DePauw was a premier liberal arts institution. The master plan reoriented the campus front door, moved the art gallery and bookstore to the Courthouse Square to engage the community, and developed a new dining center as the social hub of the campus. The result was an increase in applications and a more secure enrollment.

Towson University

In 2002, Towson University had not built a new building in over thirty years. Over that time period, the university had evolved from a teacher’s college to a full-fledged university with nearly 17,500 students. The campus had needs in every category, but did not have a vision of how the university could expand in a coherent and sustainable manner which connected its 360 acre sprawling and hilly campus. The resultant plan was a sustainable framework for land use, connectivity, open space, environmental, transportation, and safety.

Over the last 15 years, the university has been transformed and has seen a 34% increase in undergraduate enrollment while maintaining a 17 to 1 student/faculty ratio. Total enrollment has risen from 17,500 to 22,400 students. On campus housing has increased from 24% to 26% of undergraduates adding more than 2,600 beds or a 76% increase in beds. The campus has made strategic investments in infrastructure, safety, and open space which connects the campus in a more pedestrian, bicycle, and transit oriented approach. Surface parking has shifted from the core to parking garages at the perimeter giving the university the ability to utilize its limited land resources more effectively. Sensitive landscapes such as the Towson Run stream valley and steep slopes have been set aside as natural areas which will be preserved and enhanced. Handicapped accessibility has been greatly enhanced across the hilly campus with pathways, interconnected buildings, and strategic drop-off points.

The hilly campus made the athletics precinct and the West Village seem far away. the plan proposed to cross busy streets connecting hilltop to hilltop which gave the plan the nickname of the "bridges of Baltimore County."

"intuitive circulation"

Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center

Johns Hopkins acquired the Bayview Medical Center as an extension of the main East Baltimore Academic Medical Center Campus. The regional hospital was designed with shared rooms and limited outpatient capacity. Circulation was confusing and often led to more stress for visitors and patients.

The proposed plan created a more intuitive approach to the patient and visitor experience by creating in inpatient loop and a separate outpatient loop with clear signage, convenient parking, and straightforward paths to destinations. Making the hospital as hospitable as possible.

"fast, affordable, and a mix of uses" Maryland Institute College of Art

Affordability for students and balancing the books of an institution are often competing goals.

MICA needed new housing which was affordable in addition to needing specialized studio spaces. The ability to think about how the construction of the building could meet both goals was paramount to meeting these competing goals.

"attracting 3rd and 4th year students" SUNY Oswego

In order to attract upperclassmen, SUNY Oswego developed a new townhouse complex offering a more independent lifestyle. The plan contains 68 units which are arranged on neighborhood scaled streets which encourage socialization. A commons building offers easy access to quiet study rooms, recreation areas, and a bistro cafe.

"the campus living room" Western State Colorado University University Center

The primary goal of the new center was to create a student-oriented campus living room.

Student clubs and organizations were moved from the basement of the original center to a central location along the main pedestrian spine of the main floor, visible from both the main north and south entries to draw students to get more involved in campus activities. The center is designed to be the "living room" of the campus with abundant lounge, entertainment, and social spaces.

"collaborative research" Colorado State University Fort Collins Chemistry Research Building

The labs are designed for flexibility and will support synthetic chemistry research including organic,

inorganic and biosynthesis disciplines. The design is efficient to maximize future flexibility and reconfiguration which fosters communication, engagement and innovation among students and faculty.

The new Chemistry Building is adjacent to CSU’s new Biology building and the future Health Education Outreach Center, completing the Science destination area for the Fort Collins campus.

Several guiding principles were developed early on to help inform the decision making, resulting in a streamlined, efficient, and simple design that meets the research needs of today and the future: · Create Open, Flexible labs that can adapt to various size research groups. · Make the student researcher space feel open and day-lit, while being directly adjacent to the labs. · Support up to 115 researchers in Synthetic Organic, Synthetic Inorganic, and Bio-Synthetic Chemistry. · Create a building that ties into the CSU campus vernacular.

"embracing the beetle" Colorado State University Fort Collins Biology Building

The Mountain Pine Beetle has decimated mountainsides of pine trees in Colorado. Turning a challenge into an opportunity, the dead wood was harvested and transformed into beautiful siding and furniture. The Beetle Kill Wood was incorporated into this state of the art science building to demonstrate the effect nature has on our everyday lives. In addition to the wood, the building builds in numerous educational opportunities which reinforce the purpose of the curriculum.

It takes a team of different experts to build today. The Center for the Built Environment and Infrastructure Studies brings together design, engineering, and technology under one roof where teams work on solving complex problems. The building fosters collaboration and demonstrates sound sustainable building practices acting as a living lab.

School of Nursing Pinkard Building Expansion Johns Hopkins University

The original Pinkard Building was designed for a significantly smaller nursing student population and at a time when the school offered undergraduate education. The school has recently transitioned to a graduate and PhD nursing program. Through integrated planning, the team combined quantitative and qualitative hands-on analyses to develop a new program of space and explored the desired student experiences with the School of Nursing.

The design is student centric, aligned with the current pedagogy, and will increase the efficiency of the building and operations. The project includes the construction a 36,500 sf addition and renovation of 27,500 sf of the existing Pinkard Building. The north end of the Pinkard Building will be renovated and clad in a more transparent skin to allow the building to enliven the street and connect to the East Baltimore medical campus.

New program spaces include the “Hub”, an open and enclosed study and collaboration space for students, a café, re-imagined administrative and faculty spaces to encourage cross institutional collaboration, an expanded conference and event space, new centers for research, and new technology rich active learning spaces.

The building is designed around a concept of cardiovascular and mental wellness. A 4-story meandering stair system, biophilia, and a visual and physical connection to an existing courtyard celebrate health and wellness.

"demonstrating wellness" Harford Community College Nursing and Allied Health Professions Building

The demand for nurses is sharply rising and the Harford Community College (HCC) School of Nursing and Allied Health is investing in the future of educating young minds with a passion for helping others. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of registered nurses is expected to grow 26 percent from 2010 to 2020.

The demand for nurses is so high that 100% of HCC’s Spring and Fall graduating classes of 2016 are employed in nursing fields.

A health inspiring environment was pivotal as an example to medical education students. Maximizing daylight at every opportunity, even in labs where windows compete with hospital bed head walls, windows were provided.

The interior is light, open, transparent and encourages use of stairs. A living wall was designed as an accent to wellness. High efficiency HVAC, using recycled materials, and storm water cleaned in rain gardens highlight sustainable features producing a building eligible for LEED Silver certification.

"realistic simulation" University of Virginia Claude Moore Nursing Education Building

Sited directly across the street from the main Nursing School building, McLeod Hall, this 34,000 sf Education Building ushers in a new era for UVA’s School of Nursing. It creates collaborative workspaces and new community spaces while highlighting health and wellness by its four-story open grand stairs. The state of the art simulation center creates a variety of scenarios which provide needed interdisciplinary training for the medical professions.

"reinforcing our identity" Washington College Chestertown, Maryland

Founded in 1782 under the patronage of George Washington, Washington College is among the nation’s leading liberal arts institutions. Located on over 100 acres in the heart of historic Chestertown, Maryland, the character and history of the Chesapeake region define and inform the campus experience. In collaboration with faculty, staff and administration, the Landscape Architecture studio at HCM has worked to define and enhance those emotional connections, while responding to the needs of the modern campus and today’s student. The first president's signature is incorporated into the signage. Elements of his Mount Vernon gardens are translated onto the campus reinforcing the connection to the founding father of the nation and the institution.
