ABOUT

Born in South Korea, raised in Singapore. Kev i n C h u n g s e e s h i m s e l f w i t h a multicultural background. Being brought up in Singapore opened his eyes to different tradtions and cultures. This expanded how he views the world around him. After finishing his high school degree, he pursued his dreams of surrounding himself with architecture and interior design at the Academy of Art University.

His passion for architectural process, human scale and evaluating the interaction between people and architecture drives his design process. Making the invisible become a tangible subject to the human eye.

Kevin believes that in design and personal skill, there is always room for improvement. So he is always willing to learn, and looking for new ways to improve his skills.

This portfolio shows the process that he takes when discovering new designs as well as interests that help motivate him to explore new experiences and skills.

GROUND UNIT LAYERS OF CALMNESS A connection between the resident and the dwelling. The different levels and stages of balance spread throughout the space. A home to open the intagible mind and tangible space through the connection of architectural det ails and layout. Echoing the concept of tranquility of rock balancing.

10

CONCEPT

A space that needs balance and equal levels in terms of circulation and use is what needed to come out of this smaller unit. The concept of rock balancing is representitive of itself and the simple idea of layering different sized rocks on top of each other. The concept of having multi-use areas overlapping each other in a functional and creative method. The concept produced the idea of an open space created by having small steps into different spaces creating the feeling of entering another space without having the closure and restrictions of a partition wall.

11

CONCEPT

12

M A R I OT TO R E S I D E N C E

DEVELOPMENT The development of the floorplan and open spaces uses the movement and techniques of rock balancing studied through different forms and architectural details on walls, floorplan and overall layout. Through the development process, the overlapping layers and spaces are studies to help create rooms that intersect and connect with each other. Vertical and horizontal forms are studied to help visualize the balance within the dwelling.

G r o u n d U n i t 13

FLOOR PLAN The shared foyer on the ground floor leads to the stairs that lead to the lower unit as well as the upper unit. The foyer also leads to the shared garage of the dwelling units. The entry to the ground unit is centered on the floorplan which allows full view and access to the resident, the importance of this central entry core is to allow as much open space within a fixed small dwelling unit. The entry has a straight view out into the patio allowing maximum daylight. The

1

steps to create the feeling of separation between spaces are placed in the entry, kitchen and patio. The living room, bedroom, bathroom and closet are all placed on the same level for their function and use. The living room is connected to the open kitchen and needs to be separated through the steps to create a sense of a larger open space. The patio is created with different layers of steps to create space within a space.

Mariotto Residence Ground Unit // Bedroom

The bedroom contains different conceptutal ideas that are integrated into the interior. The most apparent feature of the room is the diagonal glass partition with the sliding pocket door that slide into the wall. The bold diagonal line represents the idea of levels connecting with each

other. A diagonal line that brings together the vertical with the horizontal, it is neither flat or straight. It is also the representation of rock balancing and its many layers building an intagible line from the form of rock balancing. Layers and different uses of materials on each individual walls also reflect upon the layering concept, with the science behind rock balancing. The heaviest material, concrete, balancing on top of second heaviest material, wood. After the wood material, the last is the lightest finish out of the three materials,

a white paint finish. This type of layering finish is continued with less materials on walls that are tangent to the main wall. Built in bookshelves and cove lighting are designed in the same method and idea of the wall with the diagonal glass wall partition for emphasis on concept.

18

M A R I OT TO R E S I D E N C E

Mariotto Residence Ground Unit // Kitchen

The kitchen and storage are designed with the same concept of overlapping layers. However the ideas are not presented in literal terms. An obvious visual form of the kitchen and storage space are the retangular and cubic shapes. The level changes from the living to the

G r o u n d U n i t 19

kitchen and storage space are seperated by simple steps. This creates an invisible form of space that separates the spaces without having to block them with wall partitions. The material layering of rock balancing are present throughout the whole dwelling. Different materials on top of each other to give a sense and atmosphere of heaviness and lightness to different parts of the space. A heavy concrete material is used throughout most the kitchen, and this is then balanced with wood forms on the ceiling as well

as wood flooring to balance out and bring together the weight of the concrete. The lightest finish of white paint is then used for the wall that allows visual lightness and emphasis with daylight coming through the windows out into the patio.

20

M A R I OT TO R E S I D E N C E

Mariotto Residence Ground Unit // Living Room

To create movement, balance and unity within the largest space in the dwelling was the biggest challenge to the small space. To create movement and unity, the same method and technique used in the bedroom wall is carried throughout the living room space. The diagonal

View of Living Room and Dining Room

G r o u n d U n i t 21

line continues from the top and makes a descent down all the way to the end of the living room. The break between the diagonal line is created at the steps to the kitchen where a window is placed just above the line to allow daylight in as well as creating a break within the long diagonal line. This creates a visual balance and allows the eye to appreciate the white space that exists between the line and window. Most of the furnishings are simple to it’s materials and form. This helps emphasize the spacious atmosphere

and the calm movement of the diagonal line. The living room and dining areas are shared to allow maximum usage out of the space without having to give up the needs and wants of the resident.

LOWER UNIT FINDING FORM IN GEOMETRY Finding and creating intangible and tangible paths and forms using simple geomtry. Creating and making simple visual context and matter within a void. To find something out of nothing. To create power, boldness and activity through light design.

Entry Wall with Custom Lighting

Patio with Wall Decoration

26

CONCEPT

The lower unit concept is based off a painting presented on the on the next page. The painting is a geometric abstraction of mountains, trees, skies and nature itself. It is allowing the intangible to be seen for something that we cannot see for ourselves. The concept of the lower unit will have masculinity and power presented through architectural details and design. The concept is to show and lead the eye to a certain focal point within a space, this in turn shows power, boldness and activity.

27

CONCEPT

28

M A R I OT TO R E S I D E N C E

DEVELOPMENT The main focus of the developmental stage was to find and study a method of showing control of visuals to represent power. To show focal points and emphasize a certain design aspect of the space. The geometric forms are the basis of all forms within the flat that make dealing with spatial layout easier to create and manipulate.

L o w e r U n i t 29

FLOOR PLAN The main stairs and entry are placed next to the emergency staircase. As soon as you enter the unit, a central core entry space that leads into the west and east sides of the unit. After entering the unit the focus is directed into the patio which allows most of the daylight into the entry space. The circulation of the unit is focused mainly in the middle of the unit

going from west to east. The bathroom is laid out along the central line that goes all the way to the east side of the unit. The living room and dining room are separated by the central line, with the kitchen next to the dining space. The user of the space does not entertain much and lives a personal life, therefore this allows the design to be open for access of daylight and usage.

Mariotto Residence Ground Unit // Kitchen and Dining

The dining room and kitchen are divided by forms and masses that are created through geometric forms. The strongest focal point of the dining space is the kitchen counter. The kitchen counter is a custom design with functional countertop and cabinets. The countertop creates

Kitchen and Dining Room

form within a void space that helps the eye carry a bold and powerful separation within the two spaces. This is echoed in the ceiling lighting and shape of the window next to the dining room. Boldness and masculinity are presented through the strong geomtric shapes as well as the styling and furnishings used in the interior. The brass art piece helps weigh down the lightness of the white paint finish as well as complimenting the wood and stone flooring. Geometric forms and strong diagonal lines give depth to the space.

34

M A R I OT TO R E S I D E N C E

Mariotto Residence Ground Unit // Master Bedroom

The focal point of the bedroom is the wall design at the head of the bed. The design was inspired by the concept of having geometric forms to create a tangible form within a white void space. Instead of creating the wall design with a different material, the same white finish is used on

Master Bedroom

the design so as to not distract the eye, but to help focus the eye into the wood wall sliding . The spotlights help emphasize the bed and wall of the bedroom. Ambient cove lighting are also placed within the sides of the wall detail to help light up the bed. The wall detail is the only focal point within the room and the only one needed to make a powerful and masculine statement.

L o w e r U n i t 37

Mariotto Residence Entry / Living Room

The main idea of the geometric artwork concept is to create simple forms within the context of the white space. To allow only lighting and form to lead the eye. A push and pull of different shapes and custom shelving units to create a sense of depth within a flat surface. The geometric lines on the wall and ceiling are carried through the whole unit showing focus and masculinity within the lines.

UPPER UNIT TREADING LOTUS FLOWER Floating the lotus flower. The radial patterns of lotus leaves making a ripple of water on a plain. The radial patterns carried out into the layout. The lotus flower and leaves give cover to life in the water. The science behind water treading on lotus leaves are the bumps that appear at a microscopic scale.

42

CONCEPT

The lotus flower is a representation of beauty. Lotus flowers were given to the most beautiful women in some asian cultures, painting and artworks were made of lotus flower to liven up an interior. The relationship between asian culture and lotus flowers are closely related, this is why the lotus flower was chosen for the client and resident of the upper unit. The concept brings a traditional asian theme with splashes of modernistic culture, therefore reducing the overwhelming cliche of asian design. The science behind a lotus flower and its’ ability to be hydrophobic is used as layout patterns within the space. The lotus flower is elegant, delicate and sensual.

43

CONCEPT

44

M A R I OT TO R E S I D E N C E

DEVELOPMENT The main focus of this concept was to keep a traditional asian theme, but to include the sensitivity of the lotus flower and the delicate touch of the flower. The lotus radial shape is repeated in the ceiling light fixtures as well as the patio.

Developmental Sketches / Concept Sketches

L o w e r U n i t 45

FLOOR PLAN The main entry was the most important part of this floorplan. The client and resident of the upper unit entertains during most of their free time and needed a place for guests to feel like they were receiving a grand entrace. As guests enter the entry space they are greeted by a full glass door that looks out onto the patio. Guests are greeted by a small wall partition that is placed to create a separation of rooms

Separation between the dining room and living room are made with a small step which are also apparent in the transition from the entry to the living and dining room. A sense of elegance and deilicate atmosphere is presented through the soft cold tones of concrete that are used as finishes within the interior. The interior is styled with furnishing that are clearly of asian culture to increase the emphasis on the asian style to meet the needs and

wants of the client. The living room is laid out in such a way that when the resident of the unit were to have guests over, they can mingle and socialize in the common space of the living room. The living room would be lit up with the ceiling feature that is above them, shaped round like a lotus flower with spotlighting and ambient cove lighting within the ceiling fixture to echo the concept of lotus leaves. It would be the only literal view of the concept in the upper unit.

Mariotto Residence Ground Unit // Master Bedroom

The bedroom is kept with a traditional style that can be seen throughout the whole unit. The wall at the head of the bed is mounted with an art piece that echoes the round form of a lotus leaf, to simply repeat the radial pattern. The interior of the bedrrom is furnished with materials

Master Bedroom

that are reminiscent of asian styles. The material finishes that are used are concrete, wood, fabric flooring and a white marble bench at the foot of the bed to add in a dash of sophistication to the interior. This is to create the asian atmosphere that is wanted by the client. The bedroom finishes are also carried into the master bathroom. An important factor of the master bedroom is the large window to allow as much daylight into the interior as much as possible.

Prudentia Living Lobby // Waiting Area

An important factor to designing a senior living home is to help guide the seniors in and out of spaces with ease. Maximizing daylight exposure enhances a more uplifting atmosphere within the home. The central core of the reception desk and back of the house facilities allow employees to assist the seniors as well as visitors to the home. Like everywhere else in the building, the reception has large areas of vertical circulation to reduce the feeling of enclosed spaces which can be unpleasant for seniors with dimentia and alzheimers

The importance of the communal space was to allow transition into different seperated spaces with a moderate balance of private and public. The communical space lives as a constant place of foot traffic while being a resting space for the seniors and visitors of Prudentia Living. The Atrium allows maximum light into the communal spaces as well as the assisted living spaces on the second level.

DEVELOPMENT The exploration into the Site layout was determined through concept, use, functionality and surrounding factors of the site. Geometry and symmetry offered the best feeling of sophistication and insight into the concept of hedonistic sophistication. Offering different points of interest to allow full use of the site allows residents to walk around the site as a park without having to go far to find nature.

86

PRUDENTIA LIVING

SITE PLAN Geometric shapes and symmetry are the main concepts used in the making of the layout. Sharp angles and balance create a sense of sophistication that goes back to the concept of Prudentia Living. In addition to the geometry, the surrounding of the site were considered in terms of determining views of the site. Different points of the park on the site offer different views while some points prevent

views out into traffic and redusing noise pollution. The east side of the site offer the best views while the west side protect the building from pedestrians looking into the site allowing more privacy for residents. Senior residents can enjoy a walk around the site and do not have to go far to find nature in the city.

ROOF PLAN The roof garden provides a private experience of the garden. Views of the bay can be seen from the roof as well as the site park that is below. The roof garden has a stronger emphasis on geometry, balance and symmetry compared to the site plan. The reason being for this is to create an even more sophisticated and orderly atmosphere for the residents. As residents move up to the roof, they are greeted by

a full glass facade that looks out into the garden all the while letting daylight into the enclosed space for warmth. Residents can enjoy a full garden event or an indoor party that can be held on the west wing of the building. Nature is not far from home when it comes to Prudentia living and this is the most appealing aspect of the roof garden and site plan.

DEVELOPMENT The main streets that are adjacent to the site are on the east and south side of the building. Therefore building an entrance that is diagonal and at an angle of both streets was the way to solve the problem of entry and circulation. The extension of this entry goes all the way in into the center of the building, forming a point of focus within the architecture.

DEVELOPMENT The challenge of this specific site was the amount of daylight and air circulation that goes through the existing building. On the exisiting site there is a building that blocks the light from the north of summer solar light. However the winter solar light provide an incredibly large amount of light on the south side of the building. This was to be taken advantage of.

The custom stair seating offers a small meeting spot for employees. They can meet with other coworkers or even clients. The stair seating system makes use of the small space that responds as the central core within the building. It seperates the lobby from the open office space.

As guests and visitors enter the building, they are welcomed by the large open space of the lobby and the building itself. The view into the open office space can be seen, however most of the view is covered by the stairs and custom seating system. The privacy of the office is kept

through the one entry into the office, while allowing light into the building, glass partitions block noise from coming in our going out. The reception desk is influenced by the different ways created by the magnetic field. This can be seen echoed on the custom stair seating system.

The core of the building opens up into the open office space from the lobby and reception area. Once again, the magnetic waves are conceptually represented in the way different spaces are laid out in the building. The bathrooms are hidden away from the work stations and are

placed right behind the kitchen / pantry. The ceiling details are a representation of the magnetic field concept, which includes the core at the back of the building. These architectural details help diffuse direct light that comes in from the skylights.

Kickstarter Office Custom Wall Seating System

The custom wall seating system is a continuous line of comfortable seating and niche meeting places that break the boundaries of ordinary meeting places. The wall seating is designed to be ergonomic and comfortable for employees to have a relaxing read or a productive meeting

session with other employees. The seating system is placed on the west and north interior walls of the building which receive the most daylight throughout the day, this was done purposely to give an uplifting experience through the wall seating system. The waves of the wall system echo the magnetic field waves and continue their way up to the second level of the employee rest lounge.

Kickstarter Office Outdoor Patio

The biggest noticeable challange of the site was the access to nature. Due to the large railroad and other buildings that surround the site, nature was hard to be found. Thus the private open patio space was placed on the second floor to allow employees to take a break outdoors

surrounded by plants. All over the office there are small areas and chances of meeting spaces. Being able to have an informal or formal meeting anywhere in the office allows dynamic teamwork within the office. Being able to be outdoors surrounded by nature also increases motivation and satisfaction amongst employees, this was a crucial part when designing the layout of the office.

DEDICATION

This portfolio is dedicated to my family, friends and instructors that have helped me shape myself into who I am now. If it wasn’t for them, my work would not be what it is now. Their guidance and support have helped me make my portfolio an abundance of rich design and art, for that I will be forever grateful.
