esidents from across Harrison and beyond were busy painting a mural last week that, when finished, will be placed on the town’s recreation center and that will measure 60 feet long by 15 feet high. The mural will be made up from 30 separate panels that will be fused together — and is expected to have more than 70 different paint colors. So how did this all come together? Well, Gabby Simoes, the town’s chief financial officer, first saw a similar mural some time ago in the magazine published by the New Jersey League of Municipalities. It was there she saw a mural that was created in downtown Newton along Spring Street. She thought it looked great there and something similar would be a great addition for Harrison.
“A couple of years ago, we saw the mural in Newton and we fell in love with it,” Simoes said. “The governing body always wanted to do something like this that was timestamped to incorporate our history. We knew we had the community center. We put capital money aside for the community center and got grant funding for repairs. And so we had some money aside and thought this was the perfect time to do this.” So Simoes and Town Clerk Paul Zarbetski brought the concept and idea to Mayor James A. Fife and the Harrison Town Council and they decided the best course of action was to open up the project to town residents, organizations, elected officials, employees and others so a large number of people,

Breast Cancer Awareness Month - 2026 In November 1999, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was in terrible shock, but I knew I had to remain calm for my children. My health was always very well and I didn’t have a family history of this disease. I am very grateful because I had tremendous support from my mother, sisters, family, friends. My husband’s love was unconditional and my children were my greatest supporters. For about three years after my diagnosis, I had been wondering how to help other survivors. Twenty years ago for the first time in Kearny, we kicked off the “Tie a Ribbon” campaign, thanks to our Mayor Alberto G. Santos and councilmembers, Deb Belfatto, the former Executive Director of the Susan G. Komen North Jersey affiliate, Lisa Feorenzo of The Observer, Rosemary Dressler (former volunteer director of West Hudson Hospital), survivors, volunteers and family. The program was taken over three years ago by Kearny’s Ava DeCastro Lawdanski, who has expanded it to include mobile mammographies in Kearny and elsewhere and much more. As a breast cancer survivor, I learned keeping a positive attitude is a way to overcome any challenge. I use affirmations and uplifting messages every day, and of course, I am still dancing. Last week, scores of Harrisonians came to the Harrison Recreation Center, where they were all able to paint the mural, which had originally been traced by hand using pencil. The rest, as they say, is history. How it all came together Anne-Marie Zarbetski, a Harrison schoolteacher,

Zarbetskis and Simoes, who went back and forth with Frost Olmsted. For Olmsted, the artist, it was a labor of love. “What I take great pride in as that once it’s complete, so many people will have had a hand in this project,” she said. “There will be such great pride in ownership because it’s their mural, not mine, it’s theirs — and it’s such a special mural. I am so happy to see so many people here today.” Zarbetski says it wasn’t just the day when The Observer came for a visit that people were at the rec center painting. In fact, over the course of several days, the town’s DPW employees and players from the Harrison boys’ varsity soccer team were among many who came to do their part and leave their stamps. “It was a tremendous showing and they spent hours doing this,” Zarbetski said. “And the kids — it was nice to see them off their phones, chatting, not reading their screens, enjoying each other’s company,” Simoes said. And, of course, some of the most famous Harrisonians will
find their way onto the mural, most notably, the longtime former Mayor Frank E. Rodgers as well as several former prominent athletes. What’s next? Once the painting is complete, Frost Olmsted will haul back all of the individual panels — again, there are 30 in all — back to her studio. The panels will be placed together there and it will take a month or two for everything to “cure.” The hope is that once it begins to warm up again, come May, the finished product can be installed — that will take about a week to complete. And by June — a grand reveal. “Everything, really, from the shape of the hexagons which you’ll see (pointing to Harrison’s history as being a beehive of industry) to the story in it all has a hand in the history,” Simoes said. “And look, and you can have a million things in there, and everyone’s gonna have a different opinion, so we tried to get as general, but yet as detailed as possible. And I think we succeeded at that.”

Units secured the area, established a perimeter and initiated negotiations with the suspect. After a period of time, Thomas J. Romano, 57, of Kearny, who was the subject of an unrelated arrest warrant, surrendered to police. The perimeter remained in place for some time and the investigation was ongoing after Romano was taken into custody.
According to Gontarczuk: At approximately 9:16 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 1, Kearny police units were dispatched by 911 to a residence on Webster Avenue, following a report of shots having been fired. As officers took positions near the residence, police say they heard an

THE MANY FORMS OF KERATOCONJUNCTIVITIS
Keratitis is inflammation of the cornea. Conjunctivitis (also known as pinkeye) is inflammation of the conjunctiva. When the two conditions occur together, it’s called keratoconjunctivitis. The condition can be unilateral or bilateral (in one or both eyes); hyperacute, acute, or chronic (lasting one week, one month, or longer); and infectious or noninfectious. There are at least six infectious forms, which can be bacterial, viral, or fungal (bacterial keratoconjunctivitis is common among children). There are at least five noninfectious forms (the most common is allergic). The type of keratoconjunctivitis and the way it’s treated correspond with the cause. Common treatments include eye drops, ointments, and antihistamines. When caused by another illness or
disease, it is treated by managing that condition. If your eyes are puffy, watery, itchy and red where they should be white, you should contact your healthcare provider. You may have keratoconjunctivitis, or inflammation in both your cornea and your conjunctiva. While some forms may resolve on their own, other types may need to be treated by your healthcare provider. To schedule an exam, please call 201-8960096. Our office is located at 20 Park Avenue, Lyndhurst. To reach our optical shop, call 201-8960007. We accept most insurance. P.S. Many types of keratoconjunctivitis can clear up quickly, while others are chronic and require long-term management. Allergic keratoconjunctivitis can cause eye damage if not treated.

For Belleville boys soccer, it’s a tale of two seasons By Jason Bernstein
F
jason@theobserver.com
ollowing a rough 2025 and a drop to the Super Essex Conference’s Independence Division, Belleville boys soccer coach Joseph Pontoriero decided to break this regular season into two parts. The first part was built around building back the confidence after going 5-13-1, taking aim at a division title and racking up victories. The second part was focused on challenging this group, ramping up the schedule and making sure it knew where it stood and what needed to be done in order to have a good showing in the upcoming Essex County and state tournaments. With a 6-2-2 record through the first five weeks of the season, part one was a success, one that culminated with a 3-0 victory over East Orange on Wednesday that clinched the Independence Division title. Now comes the second part, a schedule this week that includes matchups with local rivals Bloomfield and Nutley followed by an Oct. 14 matchup against a West Orange team ranked second in the state by NJ.com. “I told them listen, you can play what you can play (in the division) and that’s it. We’re going to set it up so we get the confidence, we lock up what we have to and we do our job. And they did that, they did a great job,” said Pontoriero.
“Then in October they know we’re going to ramp up and we’re going to have to really, really step up our game. And I think they’re ready.” A big part of the resurgence this fall is thanks to the return of two standouts, who played for MLS Next instead of high school soccer a year ago. One of those returnees is junior striker Leo Vergara, who has reestablished himself and one of the area’s best attacking players, scoring 13 goals and having three hat tricks this season. “Losing him last year was huge,” Pontoriero said. “You can put him up there and if he’s in the box, you have to be careful because he can find the back of the net in a second.” Joining Vergara up top is junior Santiago Flores, who has six goals and two assists, while not facing the double teams he often faced a year ago with Vergara gone. Setting Vergara and Flores up is another returner from MLS Next in senior center midfielder Michael Rivera. Rivera, who has three goals and six assists, is someone who can do a little bit of everything out there despite often being one of the shortest players on the pitch. “He’s the guy that we run through,” Pontoriero said. “If he was taller, I think he’d be one of the better players in the state. But he’s so fast that it’s like he plays like he’s bigger because you can’t get the ball off his foot because of how fast he is.”
Flanking Rivera on the outside are sophomore Javier Guaman on the right side while seniors Ronald Garzon and Luis Garcia and junior Jacobo Buenano are all seeing time on the left. Freshman Christopher Carino-Sila has also seen notable time both in the center and on the outside. Buenano and Cesar Diaz are the main holding midfielders, though Rivera will see time there as well. Defensively, Belleville often employs a diamond formation with a stopper and sweeper. Senior Kevin Escobar, who previously started as a center midfielder, has emerged as the sweeper after moving back there earlier due to other injuries. Sophomore Austin Winter has been the primary stopper, with Diaz also someone who sees time there. The outside backs have been a mix and match with seniors Alex Pesantes and Cody Ferrerya, and talented freshman Axel Alcantara seeing the bulk of the time. Junior Adrian Ayaso also sees extensive time on the defensive side of the ball. Senior Nicolas Lopez, Michael Capasso and Justin Valenzuela, juniors Jayden Acuna and Jacob Toledo, and sophomores Dylan Orozco, Kenni Fonseca, Jake Ortiz, Carlos Villalba and Christian Torres are also vying for minutes in the field. Starting in goal is four-year starter Nicolas Cooper, who posted back-toback shutouts last week and junior

Leonardo Gomez is the backup. The Essex County Tournament will be seeded this week and while the Bucs won’t be seeded high, they know it will be a prime chance to reestablish itself as a legitimate team within the county. “I think this group can really compete in October and in the state tournament and really represent what Belleville’s about,” said Pontoriero. “I think the players are at the point where they’re realizing that we took care of business, we did what we had to do. We did what was expected of us and it’s time to just shock some people.”

WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE HOUSING MARKET NOW?
Many would-be homebuyers and sellers have been hesitant due to stagnated prices and mortgage rates that many hoped and projected would come down. But rates are expected to keep lowering slowly, while prices won’t change much and currently aren’t rising. A five-year forecast is uncertain with the current economic climate. Inventory is slowly but surely on the rise, but more inventory is still needed to make a noticeable impact on affordability. One expectation of a phenomenon called the “silver tsunami” refers to the increasing number of baby boomers that are aging out of their homes. Many of these homes will return to the market
in the near future, giving inventory a boost and more first-time buyers a fighting chance. The real estate market may be changeable and unpredictable, but we certainly are not. udson County Executive Craig Guy applauded Mayor Carol Jean Doyle and the Town of Kearny’s filing of a lawsuit against heliport operator Helo Holdings Inc. (HHI) in the Chancery Division of New Jersey Superior Court. HHI is in South Kearny town. In June, Guy and the Hudson County Board of County Commissioners entered into a sharedservices agreement to support coordinated legal action and the sharing of legal expenses aimed at addressing and curbing the impacts of incessant tourist helicopters flying over Hudson County municipalities. “For years, Hudson County has been inundated with the relentless whirring of helicopters flying low over our communities, creating excessive noise and safety concerns for our residents. With the filing of this lawsuit, we will fight to ensure that the heliport operator is held accountable for its actions,” Guy said. “Government works best when the County partners with our municipalities to work on behalf of our residents
and we will keep fighting to ensure that HHI abides by agreements it previously made.” The county filed papers with the court asking to be included as an interested party in the legal proceedings. This will give the county the ability to file legal briefs and certifications in support of Kearny’s suit. It is expected Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne and Union City will make similar applications to the court. “The Town of Kearny is happy to take the lead in filing this lawsuit,” Doyle said. “Kearny residents, and all those living across Hudson County, deserve a high quality of life and this lawsuit will ensure the lives of our residents will not be harassed by constant helicopter flights.” U.S. Rep. Rob Menendez, meanwhile, praised the move. “I commend County Executive Guy and our cities for holding HHI accountable,” Menendez, D-8, said. “Since coming to Congress, I’ve fought to stop these dangerous, nonessential helicopter flights, and we won’t stop until our communities get the peace and safety they deserve.”

f you’ve lived in Kearny or Lyndhurst for any part of the last 32 years, one name that has become synonymous with successful real-estate ventures is Fernando Semiao’s. In fact, driving along the Kearny Avenue/Ridge Road corridor during that timeframe, you’d see his two offices within a few miles of each other — one in Kearny, the other in Lyndhurst. And as successful as Century 21 Semiao & Associates has been since 1993 when he opened the Kearny office, (he’s been a realtor since 1989) Semiao himself has always looked to do more. And now, he is — in a big way. Century 21 Semiao & Associates, Century 21 Christel Realty and Century 21 Gemini have merged operations to form Century 21 Venture Real Estate, a unified brokerage serving Bergen, Hudson, Passaic, Essex, Morris and Sussex counties — home to nearly 40% of New Jersey’s total population and one of the most competitive real estate corridors in the country. The merger brings together veteran real estate leaders with decades of combined experience, creating a seamless North Jersey operation purpose-built for the scale and complexity of the region. Spanning nine offices across six counties, the newly combined brokerage brings together more than 350 independent agents who collectively speak 27 languages — a reflection of the region’s rich diversity and the varied expertise each legacy firm contributes. Century 21 Semiao & Associates’ deep commercial roots, Century 21 Christel Realty’s established corporate relocation practice and Century 21 Gemini’s government relocation in addition to
their combined expertise in residential real estate now operate under a single banner, creating a breadth of specialization rarely seen in a regional brokerage. Century 21 Semiao broker/owner Fernando Semiao and Century 21 Christel Realty Broker/ Owner Peter Skolsky will serve as the principal owners of Century 21 Venture Real Estate, while Century 21 Gemini broker/owner Louis Batelli will serve as Office Supervisor of the company’s Wayne office. Semaio will remain broker of record for the entire organization. As an additional bonus, Semiao has also merged with Kearny native and longtime realtor Alex Jesus, formerly of Exit Golden Realty. With that, Jesus brings his well-established and respect real-estate school, which will continue to train the next generation of real-estate agents. Meanwhile, Century 21 Christel Realty has been affiliated with the Century 21 brand since 1974, Century 21 Gemini since 1975 and Century 21 Semiao & Associates since 1993. “The depth of our combined experience in Northern New Jersey real estate and our collective tenure with the most recognized name in real estate creates an incredible springboard for future growth, expansion and success,” Semiao said. “Peter, Louis and I are incredibly excited at the opportunity this merger presents to be the leading real estate brokerage in the state’s most populous region.” HOW IT ALL CAME TO FRUITION “I got together with Pete Skolsky because of our relationship with the broker council. We’ve been working together for 25 years and talked about buying two companies, and even splitting up the

two offices,” Semiao said. “He would take one, I would take the other. And I’d end up with five, and he would end up with four. But we ended up buying it together, and then we talked about, wouldn’t it be great for all of us to get together, me, the new offices, and his offices, the three he had, all including Parsippany, Hamburg, Montclair, Wayne,
Hasbrouck Heights, Secaucus, Lyndhurst, Kearny and Rockaway, with Lyndhurst being the regional office. And those talks started, and it took six months, but we came to an accord that we could save money by getting together our bookkeepers and our back offices and front offices. You don’t need four of each anymore. Now you need two.”

Semiao will remain broker of record for all the branches. And now with this greater reach, office-wise,the new company represents even more than meets the eye. “We handle about 10 counties because our MLS’s reach, so we’ve got you covered, and this is really good and a win for everybody,” Semiao said.
“Right now, the economy, as a whole, is lackluster. Inventory is little, prices are high. While other agencies are losing offices every month, we’re growing.” Meanwhile, the new company instantly becomes one of the largest in New Jersey’s real-estate market, something that has brought Semiao immense pride. A GREAT GROUP OF NEW PARTNERS With the new company former, Semiao says he’s excited to be able to work with the great professionals he’s known for a long time. Both took time to discuss what they bring to the new organization. “With greater synergies and increased efficiencies at the brokerage level, we will be able to focus on supporting our agents in deepening their presence across all six counties and increasing engagement with clients at every stage of their homeownership journey,” Skolsky said. “From Hudson County to the Pennsylvania border, we cover the full breadth of what Northern New Jersey has to offer — and our expertise in serving clients through every life stage, from a first home purchase to corporate relocation to retirement, means we’re with them for the long haul.” “Bringing together this unrivaled roster of real estate agents gives us a strong competitive edge as we benefit from the increased collaboration across a significantly larger network of agents,” Batelli said. “When you work with a Century 21 Venture Real Estate agent, you are backed by the wealth of experience and expertise of 350 professionals who bring to the table a wide variety of specialized skills that can meet the specific real estate needs of each and every client.” Leveraging the Century 21 brand’s robust suite
11 of business-building tools, agents affiliated with the new joint brokerage will have access to stateof-the-art technology and an international network to complement their community connections and local market knowledge. “I have had the privilege of watching Fernando, Peter and Louis build something truly special in their individual markets over the years — a shared commitment to their agents, their clients and their communities that is rare at any scale,” Mike Miedler, president and CEO of Century 21 Real Estate LLC, said. “What they are creating together with Century 21 Venture Real Estate is more than a merger. “It is a blueprint for what the future of real estate looks like in one of the most vibrant and complex markets in the country. For agents, it means access to a broader network, deeper resources and a platform to grow in ways that simply were not possible before. For consumers across Northern New Jersey, it means working with professionals who combine local expertise and personal relationships with the full power of the Century 21 brand behind them. I could not be more excited about what comes next.” Meanwhile, Century 21 Venture Real Estate is looking for motivated and ambitious independent sales professionals to join their growing real estate company. Whether exploring a new professional opportunity or looking to elevate a long-lasting real estate business, new faces are welcome. For those looking to buy or sell a home in the Northern New Jersey area, visit C21VentureRealEstate.com to learn more. Kearny fall leaf pickup begins Nov. 2 By Kevin A. Canessa Jr.
K
kc@theobserver.com
earny’s fall leaf program begins the week of Nov. 2, 2026. All residents must place leaves in biodegradable paper leaf bags and leave them at the curb for pickup. Residents may longer place leaves in the street on street sweeping day — this regulation has been in effect for several years now. There is also no longer a need to call to schedule a pickup of leaf bags, as they will be picked up from Nov. 2, 2026 to Jan. 8, 2027, weather permitting, in accordance with the following schedule: n Monday Zone 3 – Labeled green on zoning map. n Tuesday Zone 2 – Labeled red on zoning map. n Wednesday Zone 1 – Labeled blue on zoning map. n Thursday Zone 3 – Labeled green on zoning map. n Friday Zone 4 – Labeled yellow on zoning map. Leaf bags may be purchased Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 10 bags for $5 at the Kearny DPW, 357 Bergen Ave. Residents may also purchase biodegradable paper leaf bags from a retailer of their choice. Plastic bags of any kind will not be accepted for leaf disposable; bags must be biodegradable paper leaf bags. Please note — only leaves should be placed in leaf bags. Grass, twigs and any other yard waste must be disposed of with regular garbage pickup. For additional information, or to view zone maps, etc., visit www.kearnynj.org.

Lyndhurst Knights hosting beefsteak to benefit children with cancer The Lyndhurst Knights of Columbus Council No. 2639 hosts its second annual Columbus Day Beefsteak/Tricky Tray Dinner fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 10, at 6:30 p.m., at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish Center, 146 Copeland Ave., Lyndhurst. Tickets are $60 per person and include beefsteak, ziti, dessert, hot and cold beverages and 10 prize chances. The council is teaming up with Giuseppe Maneiro’s family, who take care of Giuseppe, a 6-yearold who is battling B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Together, they are raising vital funds for the charities that have stood by Giuseppe’s side. To this end, at the beefsteak,
organizers will collect new, unopened toys to donate to the Child Life Program at local hospitals to replenish toys in their playrooms. Additionally, a portion of this year’s proceeds will be donated to the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund to help families fighting childhood cancer. To purchase tickets, visit www. linktr.ee/council2396 or call (551) 587-8402.
Red Cross still in need of blood donations The American Red Cross continues to urge donors of all blood types to act now and make an appointment to give blood or platelets amid the ongoing national blood crisis. Just three additional donors at every blood drive could help further stabilize the blood supply and ensure patients continue receiving lifesaving care.
Since issuing only the second blood crisis in Red Cross history in late July, thousands of generous donors have stepped up to help save lives. At the same time, the blood supply remains under severe pressure, just as many communities transition to back-to-school schedules and people enjoy final summer plans. When fewer donors are available to give, the impact on available lifesaving
blood products can be significant — especially when the blood supply is already facing a four-year summer low. Book an appointment to give blood now by using the Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling (800) 733-2767. Those who are unable to donate can still make an impact by encouraging eligible friends, family members and colleagues to give blood.
