New mausoleum planned for Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington

oly Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, already containing the most significant mausoleum section among Catholic cemeteries in the U.S., is planning a new mausoleum construction project to add space on the same footprint of the existing cemetery.

Representatives of the Archdiocese of Newark, which owns and operates the sprawling 208acre site bordered by Ridge Road to the west and

Schuyler Avenue to the east, presented plans for a new mausoleum construction project to Mayor Daniel Pronti and the Borough Council on July 14.

Ultimately, the proposal will go before the borough Planning or Zoning Board for design approval. However, the municipal governing body will have the final say because the cemetery sits within the Ridge Road Redevelopment Area.

Kearny man charged in connection to Newark fire captain’s OD death

A

Kearny man has been arrested in connection with the death of a Newark Fire Captain, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II, announced today.

Eliasel Baez, 42, of Kearny, was arrested and charged with causing the druginduced death of Newark Fire Capt. Carlos Rivera in the early part of 2022.

Baez has been charged with strict liability drug-induced death for distributing a controlled-dangerous substance that caused the death of Rivera.

He is also charged with counts of distribution of CDS

cocaine and distribution of CDS within 1,000 feet of a school.

On Jan. 15, Rivera, 49, of Sayreville, was found unresponsive inside the Newark Firehouse of Engine 15 Ladder 7 at 269 Park Ave. He was taken to University

Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“Essex County leads the state in drug overdoses.

Given those numbers, it is important we fully investigate these cases and charge the perpetrators with strict liability homicide when appropriate,’’ Stephens said.

“The facts and circumstances in this case warranted those charges.”

The investigation, which is active and ongoing, is being handled by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force.

Harrison Summer Swim program underway through August

T

he Harrison Board of Education and Recreation Department’s Summer Swim Program is now open through the last week of August. Pool hours at Washington Middle School are Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to noon; 1 to 4 p.m.; and 6 to 8 p.m. On Saturdays, the pool is open from 1 to 4 p.m.

Swimming lessons take place Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. and are open to children 5 to 14 who are registered.

Adult swimming is during general admission from 10 a.m. to noon and 6 to 8:00 p.m. During the evening session, one lane is roped off for adult swimming.

Family registration is $2 per person and each family member receives a pool permit card. Admission is 50¢ per child and $1.50 per adult.

“Learning to swim is an essential life skill that we’re proud to offer to our students,” Board of Education President Maria Vila said.

Added Harrison Recreation Department Chairman Larry Bennett: “Response to the swimming program has been tremendous. The kids are having a great time with their friends and they’re learning water safety skills too. We try to keep the kids busy in Harrison.”

The swim program is open to all Harrison and East Newark residents; families may register during pool hours. Families who are registering for the first time must present two forms of identification as proof of residency.

Temperatures rise & so, too, do phone scams

If you’re thinking, “I could swear I’ve read something like this before,” you’re right.

Because yet again, PSE&G — one of many companies “portrayed” by scammers to steal from unsuspecting consumers — is warning the rise in mercury carries with it a rise in scammers scamming the scammable.

The scammers call, pretending to be PSE&G employees or impersonating other prominent area utilities, threatening to turn off service for nonpayment. PSE&G urges customers to understand scammers’ tactics and do the right thing if confronted with a demand for payment: Get the truth from the real PSE&G at 800-436-PSEG (7734).

And remember — scammers know how to spoof telephone numbers, so even if your caller ID says the name of the utility or correct phone number, hang up immediately, then call back.

“Protecting our customers is a top priority. It is critically important we continue to raise awareness and educate customers about how to spot and stop potential scams,” Jane Bergen, director of billing, Customer Care for PSE&G, said. “Scammers continue to adapt and develop increasingly sophisticated tactics to take advantage of our customers.”

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, scammers increased calls, texts, emails and in-person tactics, and they continue to contact utility customers asking for immediate payment to avoid service disconnection.

PSE&G never sends just one notification to a customer

within an hour of a service disconnection.

Also, the company would not require payment with a prepaid debit card, gift card (from places like Target, Best Buy, Google Play, Apple, etc.) or any form of cryptocurrency or third-party digital payment via fund transfer applications.

PSE&G offers a variety of payment options and would never require a specific type of payment.

The same is true of every other utility — and of most businesses.

Signs you’re likely being scammed n You get a threat to disconnect your service: Scammers may aggressively tell the customer their utility bill is past due and service will be disconnected if a payment is not made — usually within an hour. n You get a request for immediate payment: Scammers may instruct the customer to purchase a prepaid card, a gift card or even Bitcoin, and then to call them back to make a phone payment. They may request the customer use a payment app to make an online payment, or even give instructions for an in-person meeting.

Many times after the customer makes the first payment, the scammer will call back to ask for the payment to be resubmitted due to an error with the amount. The scammer refers to a new amount and claims that the original payment will be refunded. The refund, of course, is never granted. n You experience in See SCAMS, Page 18

KPD: Man screamed to get into apartment he was barred from entering

On July 14 at 8:30 p.m., Officer Anthony Oliveira and several backup officers were dispatched to a private home after dispatch received multiple calls about a man shouting profanities outside.

Responding officers found James V. Noack, 53, of Kearny, who reportedly had come to the home to retrieve some personal items but found that he was locked out and his roommate not home.

While Noack walked away, officers investigated further

finding that Noack had been barred from this residence by a temporary restraining order.

The officers stopped Noack at Kearny and Stewart avenues intending to arrest him for violating the court order. Noack reportedly responded by balling his fists, tensing his arms, swinging his body and shouting profanities and threats.

After some effort, Noack was arrested.

Noack was charged with contempt, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and obstructing the

administration of law. He was later transferred to the Hudson County jail.

On July 15 at 8:03 a.m., Officer Kevin Carvalho was dispatched to Starbucks on Passaic Avenue to meet with a 26-year-old man who was reporting an aggravated assault. The victim alleged he had a “road rage-type” incident on Bergen Avenue with the driver of a unique yellow Nissan sports car. It was alleged that the driver of the Nissan pulled alongside the victim, gestured for him to lower his window and then pointed a black handgun at

him while threatening him.

The Nissan’s driver then drove away.

Det. Jonathan Dowie investigated further identifying the driver of the yellow Nissan as Justin D. Rodrigues, 23, of Kearny. At 5:05 p.m., detectives on a surveillance detail arrested Rodrigues as he was leaving his Peden Terrace home.

Detectives and officers of the Hudson County Regional SWAT Team then executed a search warrant of Rodrigues’s home during which they recovered a black .6mm Cybergun Airsoft pistol resembling and labeled as a “Smith & Wesson M&P 40” semi-automatic handgun.

The handgun was found concealed inside an oven mitt that read “Love Makes A House A Home.” The oven mitt was itself concealed inside of a Pack ‘n Play portable crib stored in a closet.

Rodrigues was charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was later remanded to the county jail in South Kearny.

On July 16 at 2:35 a.m., Officer Bismark Karikari

and other officers were dispatched to a domestic dispute at a multi-family home. The officers entered the home and followed a blood trail from the hall to the living room, kitchen and then bedroom. The officers learned a married couple had allegedly been drinking alcohol at home. An argument reportedly started when the wife wanted to drink more but the husband started recording her with his cellular phone.

The argument then turned physical with the wife reportedly throwing a cup of water at her husband, scratching and hitting his face and hand, and then stomping on his cellular phone and a drinking glass that had fallen to the floor.

This cut her foot and created the blood trail.

Officers arrested the 41-year-old Kearny woman on charges of simple assault and criminal mischief. She was also later charged with refusal of fingerprinting when she wouldn’t cooperate with arrestbooking procedures. After a trip to the hospital to dress her wounded foot, officers delivered the wife to the Hudson County Jail.

A REMINDER TO CYCLE SAFELY, ESPECIALLY IN THE SUMMER

In June 2021, when two teenagers riding on a bike eastbound and downhill on Garfield Avenue and flowed right onto Davis Avenue into traffic without braking, the pair was sent flying high into the air after they slammed right into an oncoming minivan. Both ended up curbside, in the street, having been slammed to the ground.

Both teens survived.

Neither wore a helmet, though they were required to do so since they were both under 17.

So this public-service announcement, though it may seem elementary — or while it may seem like common sense — is designed to shed light on a clear problem on our streets: Cyclists and motorists must all do a better job of keeping each other safe.

The Kearny Police Department, through Det. John Fabula, who occasionally rides a bike in the department’s Community Oriented Policing Unit, offered a series of tips to keep everyone on the road safe.

It all starts with the helmet.

Hear that, parents? Helmets are needed for all kids riding bikes. Hear that adults? Even though they’re not required by law, it’s time to get serious and invest in a helmet for your bike riding escapades.

But it goes well beyond helmet-wearing, Fabula says.

“Always ride on the right side of the road, with traffic,” he says. “Riding against traffic will put you where motorists don’t expect you. An example of this is when a car is making a right turn at an intersection.

Drivers are generally looking left to make sure it’s clear to turn right and may not see a bicycle riding against the flow

until it is too late.”

This concept is not optional. You wouldn’t “pretend” to be driving a car in England now, would you?

So why do it with a bike?

“Bicycles are considered vehicles and must obey the same rules as motorists,” he says.

Being visible to motorists and ensuring your bike is in proper working order is also essential.

“Wear clothes that make you more visible,” Fabula says. “Bicycles must be equipped with a horn or bell. Use the horn or bell to alert drivers and pedestrians of your presence. Make sure your bicycle is in good working order before setting out on a ride. Your wheels should be straight and shouldn’t have any side to side play. Make sure your seat and handlebars are properly tightened.”

Now, around a year ago, Gov. Philip D. Murphy signed into law a bill that requires drivers on Jersey roads to move over for people walking on sidewalk-less roads in rural areas and those riding bikes, scooters, skateboards, Little Rascal-type scooters, etc., anywhere (the 43rd law of its kind in America.)

The new law requires drivers to move over a lane if another one exists — or if driving on a single lane, putting at least 4-feet of space between the vehicle and the pedestrian/rider.

If a road’s speed limit is greater than 25 MPH, drivers must slow down to 25 MPH if the 4-foot shift away from the pedestrian is impossible.

The bill carries a $100 fine for violations — and up to $500 in fines if a motorist didn’t move over but could have and caused serious bodily harm to a pedestrian.

The bill passed unanimously in the state Assembly with only one state senator, a Republican, voting against the measure.

COMMENTARY Sickeningly, because of bail reform, punk who pummeled New York City cop was released six hours after his heinous act

f you have not yet seen the video, perhaps you ought not. It’s that bad. But it’s the basis of this editorial.

It all took place in a subway station in New York City a little over a week ago. In it, a boy, 16, jumped a turnstile, and one of New York’s Finest, along with his partner, prepared to arrest the kid to charge him with fare evasion. In doing so, however, the teenager lost his ever-loving mind and started to attack the officer as onlookers did what they always seem to do when things like this happen — they pulled out their cell phones and did their best Spielberg.

The kid was relentless, so much so the officer’s partner, a woman, appeared not to intervene.

The kid got the best of the officer, for sure, though in the end, it was not the officer whose face was cut up — it was the kid’s. Some might even say rightfully so. And mind you, it wasn’t because the officer assaulted the suspect. He barely touched him in his own defense.

But what’s most infuriating about this actually goes well beyond the teenager’s reaction to not paying a $2.75 fare — it’s that a week before this crime, the suspect had been behind bars on a felony charge — and just six hours after pummeling a sworn law enforcement officer, the punk was back out on the streets — released on his own recognizance by a New York judge after both instances.

Let’s review and repeat this.

A 16-year-old boy who already had a felony charge against him was out, free, to commit crime again, he did just that — beating up a police officer — and he was sprung without having to pay even 1¢ in bail twice. While it hasn’t happened yet, or that we know of, there’s no doubt he will

break the law again before he ever goes before a judge to face his charges. And, when he does, he’ll very likely be ROR again.

And we thought New Jersey’s bail reform was bad.

The truth is, all bail reform was designed, in principle, to avoid excessive bail, a protection already afforded to criminals in the United States Constitution’s Eighth Amendment. On paper, some of the reforms made sense — since there were many known cases of people, for months upon months, locked up in jails, waiting for their day in court.

Nothing makes sense about keeping a first-time criminal with a simple drug possession charge behind bars for 18 months because he couldn’t afford bail.

But when cases like this arise, it’s nothing short of infuriating when they’re released as if they had a broken tail light.

Bail reform, had it been done right, could have been a blessing. Instead, it has led crime-doers into a sense of security, that no matter what they do, to whom they do it, or how many times they do it, it doesn’t matter, because they’ll likely be back on the streets

within hours — to do it all over again.

In too many cases, that’s exactly what they do.

It also begs the question — why do cops even bother arresting criminals?

Sometimes, just locking one person up can keep them off the street for hours at a time, to book, fingerprint, write reports, etc. Then, by the time all of this

is complete, some judge who has no clue of what happened is saying, “OK, no room for you in the inn — go home and behave.”

It seems ridiculous, no? But this is what is happening! In New York City, in New Jersey and in other states that have enacted bail reform.

but not like this, one bit. That this New York kid was out six hours after he beat an NYPD officer is downright sickening.

Someone, somewhere, somehow, has to step up and get the ball rolling.

Will it be New York City Mayor Eric Adams?

Probably not.

Will it be Jersey Gov. Philip D. Murphy?

Highly unlikely. But it has to be someone, soon, before more lives are lost and before criminals completely take over City streets — heck, they may even try to take over streets on this side of the Hudson River, too.

The graduates are: Isabella Rose Diaz, Adama Maggie Sowe, Cristian Argueta, Brianna Romero, Anna Romero (no relation), Brandon Villanueva, Matias Piedra, Mason Mendizabel, Amana Argueta, Leana Ortecho and her sister, Jean Ortecho.

Families and friends of the cadets attended the graduation, along with Borough Councilmembers Jeanne Zincavage and Ken Graham, former Police Chief Ken Sheehan and newly appointed borough administrator Ron Edwards, former Hudson County Corrections Department director.

Officer Billy Erezuma, who runs the department’s Community Policing Unit and spearheaded the academy project, credited the mayor with advocating for it.

“Mayor Grilo instilled in our heads she wanted this academy,” he said.

And, Erezuma said, he couldn’t be happier with the results and “the way these kids showed up.”

Grilo said the idea for the academy was triggered during a visit to the Borough School when a student “asked me if she could be a police officer and I said, ‘Why not?’”

So Grilo approached Police Chief Anthony Monteiro about inviting kids to see what the police department was all about. Turns out Monteiro and Erezuma had been hoping to offer the academy, initially

with Harrison PD. Now, with the mayor’s encouragement, they could proceed on their own, in earnest.

Beyond checking out local PD headquarters and municipal court functions, with the help of contacts from other agencies, the cadets got a wide perspective on the various facets of law enforcement. They got upclose inspections of a Coast Guard vessel, the Newark PD mounted (horse) squad, State Police helicopter landing in Newark, Hudson County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office fingerprinting and missing person operations.

They also worked out with ju-jitsu instructors in the art of self-defense and they also trained with Bloomfield Police Junior Cadets, who had twice as many members, “to learn to work as one unit,” explained Erezuma.

put a positive spin on their experience.

Ariana Argueta, 10, soon to start grade 5, said she signed up “to learn what people do in the East Newark Police Department and how they help the town.” So, does she want to become a cop? “Now I have thoughts about it,” she said. She liked checking out the Coast Guard boat and

Newark PD horses.

Adama Sowe, 11, going into sixth-grade, said she wanted “to see what it’s like being a police officer and maybe one day become one.” Adama also got a kick out of seeing the Coast Guard cutter.

And Ann Romero, 11, also about to enter sixth-grade, got involved to “to see how police deal with the community,

with people crashing cars and bad people.” Ann’s favorite activity was practicing ju-jitsu.

Hopefully, Erezuma said, the East Newark cadets also took away from their experience the realization that “not only is the function of police to arrest and put away criminals.

But now, I hope, they also know we try to be fair.”

For their efforts, “the cadets have my respect,” Erezuma said. “I pray I gained theirs.”

Grilo lauded Monteiro for helping organize the program.

“He did an amazing job and, especially, bringing in all the resources to make it a success,” she said.

The mayor also extended thanks to sponsors who helped with food supplies and transportation for the cadets.

“Kids in our community are important,” the mayor said.

“Keep doing your best,” she told the cadets. “We’re going to keep doing this (academy) and continue to make it bigger and better.”

And, Monteiro reminded the youngsters, “The door to my office is always open.”

Nutley’s Devin Ortiz signs free agent contract San Diego Padres, heads to Arizona for first foray into pro baseball

As the Major League Baseball Draft neared its conclusion and his name yet to be called, Devin Ortiz, like he had hundreds, if not thousands of times before, went with father Jose to find a park near their Nutley home to work toward Devin’s dream of being a professional baseball player.

So it was only appropriate in the middle of their workout at the Belleville High School baseball field Ortiz received the phone call he had been hoping to hear for years now.

The phone call was from the San Diego Padres to express their interest in signing Devin, a star at St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale and the University of Virginia, to a

free-agent contract.

On Tuesday, Ortiz officially signed his contract with the Padres at the team’s spring training complex in Peoria, Arizona.

“When I got the call, it was a great moment. It was a great time to get the call because I was with my dad and we were hitting,” said Ortiz of the call, which happened roughly 30 minutes after the draft’s conclusion on July 19. “It was a great moment. We celebrated.

I got to be with my friends and family and have dinner with everyone at my mom’s house and just enjoy the day.”

The day was initially a frustrating one for Ortiz as he followed the third day of the draft. Eventually the need to get out of the house and try to focus elsewhere became

too much after the 15th of 20 rounds came and went.

“We were just trying to kill time and not think about it too much,” Ortiz said. “I was watching it and we said let’s go get some hitting in.

If you hear something, you hear something. We were just hoping to get a call or something. We were thankful enough that the Padres reached out and wanted to work a free agent deal and I’m very grateful that we were able to make it work.”

Five days later, Ortiz was on a plane for Arizona where he and the Padres’ 2022 draft class and undrafted free agents were getting their first taste of professional baseball.

Andrews, a football coach, hosting conditioning program for KHS’ girls’ soccer team

It’s not a surprise to see the local high school teams engaged in summer workouts as they prepare for the upcoming season.

But three mornings a week, shortly after the sun comes up, the Kearny girls soccer team is on the high school turf and not a soccer ball is in sight. Instead, a group of 20-25 girls are out on the field as part of an extensive summer strength and conditioning run by current head football coach and 15-year trainer Steven Andrews.

“The girls have really bought in,” said Andrews, who also runs a similar strength and conditioning program with the Kardinals football team in the afternoon. “They trust me and they trust themselves to come in and work hard.

It’s been fantastic to see how hard this group of girls have been working.

“I’m so proud of them and the work they do every day and we have fun doing it. I think it builds some real team chemistry.”

For the Kearny girls, the chemistry is getting built at 7:20 a.m. with Andrews’ workouts starting at 7:30 and going for two hours, three days a week. Monday is dedicated to interval training aimed at building endurance.

Wednesday’s emphasis is on speed with an emphasis on sprints and working fast.

Thursday is the only day that incorporates soccer-specific skills, but the focus is placed on acceleration and agility.

Each day also concludes with weightlifting.

The program started five weeks ago right after

high school graduation and continues for another two to three weeks before the official start of the high school soccer season later this month.

“The biggest part of all of it is the confidence (they gain). I really try to instill confidence in them,” Andrews said. “Each week I’ve seen the girls getting more confident in the weight room, the girls being a little more confident with their speed, with their conditioning. Once you’re confident in the conditioning, you can do the workout even harder than you were doing it last week and that improves the next workout.

“When you work hard, you get what you put in. And they’re all working hard so they’re all improving.”

While offseason strength and conditioning are common, they are usually done at private facilities and not by coaches in the building.

“I’m sure other teams do stuff like this,” Andrews said.

“Maybe they will go to a Parisi or something like that.

I think what’s different with this is that I’ve been in the field for the last 15 years and I love Kearny soccer. I have a pretty good grasp on how to train soccer players.”

Off-season team training for soccer is nothing new for Andrews, a Kearny alum and a football and track star at TCNJ. Andrews worked with the Kearny girls’ soccer team for two summers when current athletic director Vin Almeida was the head coach.

The genesis for this summer’s program actually started during the winter. Andrews had a longtime relationship with the family of star basketball player Maci Covello and he had started training her and a couple of others, including Julia Araujo.

Following the conclusion of the basketball season, at the urging of head coach Jody Hill, Andrews started a strength and conditioning program with the players with Hill shooting video of their work.

Covello, Araujo and others, who worked with him during the spring then pushed for Andrews to work with the soccer team this summer. It was a plan that head coach Michael Sylvia was fully on board with as well.

“Coach Hill really was the catalyst for all of this,” Andrews said. “She would shoot my videos of training people and she would push the girls to ‘go see Coach Andrews to go get better, get stronger, get more agility, get faster.’

They’re the people that are selling my program to their athletes so if they’re not buying into what I’m doing, they’re not going to tell their athletes to come. I just think the coaches see that I love Kearny school sports and this is what I do for a living. I’ve been doing this for the past 15 years. They trust in that and they trust that I will always do the right thing by their athletes.”

And with that trust comes the belief that the work in July will produce wins and championships in October and November.

McCarthy’s report continues to help college coaches in recruiting Jersey talent

For David McCarthy there is no offseason.

With a growing list of combines, college camps and 7-on-7 tournaments to fill up the spring and summer months, putting together the annual McCarthy Report, which profiles and scouts New Jersey’s top high school football prospects, has truly become a year-round endeavor for the Lyndhurst resident.

The McCarthy Report, which covers exclusive New Jersey prospects, has subscribers from more than 60 NCAA programs over all levels of college football.

“It helps me in the offseason. I’m able to get a lot more evaluations done earlier in the offseason,” said McCarthy about the scouting service his late father, Dennis, a longtime North Arlington resident, start-

“He’s an active and ath-

letic outside linebacker who makes plays all over the field,” McCarthy said of Lucias, who he has among the state’s top 125 prospects.

“He’s a very instinctive ball player who has a nose for the football.”

McCarthy’s second-ranked prospect among area schools is North Arlington QB Devin Rivas, who is coming off of a record-setting junior season with 2,230 all-purpose yards and 22 touchdowns. On Rivas, McCarthy says he is “a gunslinger who is the perfect spread quarterback.”

Another top-level wrestling prospect, Lyndhurst defensive back Damian Weaver is third on McCarthy’s list and is a “sticky cover guy who can hit and make plays.”

Barbara Mary Kingeter Barbara Mary Kingeter, (Blazas), 90, died peacefully in her sleep at home on Sunday, July, 31, 2022.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, on Wednesday, Aug. 3 from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral will begin at the funeral home Thursday morning at 9 a.m. then to St. Stephen’s Church on Kearny Avenue where a funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m.

Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Mrs. Kingeter was born in Kearny and lived in town her entire life.

She worked in the office of the Town Clerk in Kearny for 20 years before retiring in 1993. She enjoyed being a full time grandmother (Nanny) and traveling locally and abroad with family and friends.

Barbara was a member of Kearny Elks Lodge No. 1050.

She is survived by four children, Christine Stankus (John), Steven J. Kingeter (Karen), Susan A. Evanchick (Chet) and Robert G. Kingeter (Debbie). Barbara was the grandmother of Ethan and Cody Evanchick, Nicole, Jennifer and Kristen Stankus, Kathleen Preston and Garrett, Christopher, Thomas and Steven Kingeter. She also leaves behind two great-grandchildren, Bryce and Baelyn Preston and many nieces and nephews.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Robert E. Kingeter and five siblings, Christina Cambria, Anna Pringle and Joseph, John and Charles Blazas.

Marilyn A. Malone Marilyn A. Malone (nee McLane), 89, of Seabrook Village, Tinton Falls, died peacefully at home Sunday, July 24, 2022. She was born on Dec. 13, 1932 to Joseph L. & Irene (nee Reilly) McLane of Jessup, Pennsylvania.

She graduated from Jessup High School in 1950. She worked at Barbizon of Jessup and later at Valley National Bank in Kearny, where she lived for 39 years before moving to Tinton Falls in 2002.

She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, Robert J. Malone, her parents, brother Joseph G. McLane (wife Helen) and many in-laws. Surviving are her son John Malone (wife Kristi) of Bluffton, South Carolina, son James Malone (wife Catherine) of Lake Hopatcong, daughter Eileen Farrell of Pt. Pleasant, grandchildren Elizabeth Malone, Daniel Malone, Alexis Malone, Sean Farrell, Brian Farrell, Kelly Brown & Katie Brown, niece Clarissa Tricoche (husband Elliott), grand-niece Kaelin Tricoche, brother-in-law Thomas Malone (wife Katherine), sisters-in-law Cecilia Maguire (husband William), Alice Malone & Nancy Malone, and dozens of nieces & nephews.

Viewing was at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Holy Innocents Church, Neptune. Burial was in the Malone family plot in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall Twp. She was a bookkeeper for Imperial Container in Newark for 20 years before retiring in 2014.

Mrs. Meola is survived by her husband, Eugene Meola Sr., three children, Angela Wright, David Meola and Eugene Meola Jr. and one sister, Renate Gemsjager. She also leaves behind nine grandchildren and four great-granchildren.

Inge was predeceased by her daughter, Carolyn Bock.

Born in Kearny, Thomas was a Lyndhurst resident for 60 years.

Thomas was an avid bowler, and fan of the New York Yankees and New York Giants. Thomas was a devoted and faithful member of the Kearny Bible Chapel and of the Rutherford Bible Chapel.

Thomas was the beloved husband for 66 years to Dorothy Mae (Cookson) Cameron; loving father of Bruce Cameron (Janis), Debra Uhler (Tim) and Karen Allen (Jay); proud grandfather of Amy Ketchell (Mick), Rob Allen (Amanda), Brian Allen (Amanda), Katie Reyes (David), Jason Uhler (Kelly), Craig Uhler (Abby), Alex Cameron, Kristen Seetaram (Bobby), and the late Bradley Allen. He was the adoring great-grandfather of Brooke, Hailey, Rylie, Adeline, Joshua, Clara and Samuel, and was predeceased by his siblings Donald, Mary, Helen and Alan. Thomas is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Rutherford Bible Chapel.

The 250,000-square-foot facility was designed for a capacity of 35,747 internment spaces.

Since Holy Cross Cemetery opened its doors in 1915, the cemetery has been home to some 300,000 buried below and above-ground, in caskets and urns, putting available land space at a premium—as is the case for many final resting grounds around the state and country.

That’s why, Saul said, the Archdiocese has turned to above-ground burials as a more efficient option by accommodating more interments vertically on the same amount of land that a traditional grave would use.

Traditional graves account

for 55.6% of all interments in the cemetery; mausoleums hold 22.8%; below-ground urns have the remains of those cremated, 11.4%; and urns interred in the mausoleum, 10.2%, according to Saul.

He said the expansion plan calls for the erection of two smaller-sized mausoleums separate from the existing structure to accommodate additional above-ground burials. One is an 8,945-squarefoot “open-air mausoleum,” with room for 1,600 mausoleum crypts and 500 cremation urn niches and, to

the east, a 22,000-square-foot “chapel building” to handle 2,600 caskets and possibly up to 3,500 urn spaces.

The central portion of the open-air building will feature a wood cathedral ceiling, below which families and friends of the departed loved ones will gather to offer committal prayers.

Saul said the chapel building would be a fully enclosed, climate-controlled structure with a central chapel space and connecting corridors containing interior crypts arranged in columns along

each corridor’s hallway. He added this structure would house 2,600 casket spaces and urn spaces for up to 3,500 cremated remains.

Both structures’ exteriors will mimic the façade of the existing mausoleum with a combination of polished and honed granite veneer, featuring rough ashlar granite accents. The interior will feature marble crypt fronts and religious-themed artwork retrieved from now-shuttered archdiocesan houses of worship such as St. Lucy’s, St. Bridget’s and St. Boniface of

Jersey City’s downtown sector.

Saul said part of the project would include installing two additional interior roadways, each three lanes wide, to accommodate upward of 25 cars each at a time.

The cemetery’s existing vehicular ingress and egress points will remain off Ridge Road and Schuyler Avenue.

Also in the works is a parking lot just north of the chapel building, with room for 14 spaces to be shared by the garden and chapel buildings.

Even with the additional mausoleum space added, Saul said cemetery officials anticipate less overall traffic from funerals, except for those involving public figures and civil servants.

Saul said the archdiocese has projected the project will take three years to complete.

Once all necessary approvals have been secured, it is hoped that construction can begin in spring 2023, with the garden building projected to take 18 months to build and the chapel building, 30 months with some construction happening concurrently, according to Saul.
