very year — save for the last two, thanks to stupid COVID —scores of Kearny’s senior citizens get one day a year to head down to the Doyle Pavilion along the Passaic Riverside to enjoy what has morphed into one of the biggest undertakings of the

calendar year. And, last week — June 15 to be precise — the picnic returned for the first time since 2019 and it is safe to say the atmosphere …well, it was like none before and it came with a feeling we wish we could bottle up for the future.

But unlike previous stories we’ve done on the picnic, where survey the senior citizens, the throng of volunteers from the police and fire

departments, DPW, the town council, et al, we decided this time, we’d tell you more about one person who has been running the picnic since its inception decades ago — and how much work she puts into it all.

utley Mayor Joseph P. Scarpelli will debut a new podcast this July.

“Inside Nutley” will feature Scarpelli and host Thomas Greco, along with special guests, who will be taking a look at current town issues, how the town is moving forward and answering questions from Nutley residents.

“This is something we have been discussing for a while,” Scarpelli said. “But with so much going on in the township, it’s been a challenge for any of us to find the time to sit down and do it. We look forward to updating the public on

what is going on inside and outside town hall, while also welcoming neighboring town officials and residents into the conversation as well.

“It will be a very casual conversation each month.

But all five commissioners want to utilize this concept to keep our residents educated and informed on everything that is happening in town. I especially look forward to a ‘Q&A’ segment we will be doing, where we will answer our resident’s questions.”

A

police chase from the Kearny Walmart parking lot June 16 ended with the vehicle’s occupants bailing near the Wendy’s in Harrison, though one is in custody, police said.

That afternoon, in the 2 o’clock hour, police said the chase began after a stolen Mercedes SUV, out of Holmdel, was pinged at Walmart.

Officers Sean Kelly and Mina Ekladious were sent to the lot, pulled behind the vehicle and then it took off.

They followed the suspect vehicle from the parking lot, at first losing sight of it on Harrison Avenue, but then found it riding Route 280 West.

The vehicle then exited at Essex Street and the occu-

pants then jumped out near Wendy’s.

One of the two was quickly apprehended and police continued to search the area for the second suspect with the assistance of the Hudson County K-9 Unit. The apprehended suspect has been identified as Joseph C. Young-Stewart, 25, of Newark. Harrison Sgt. Marc Silva captured him, police said.

The man was driving on a suspended license and had multiple warrants out for his arrest. The second suspect remains at-large.

Capt. Timothy Wagner noted social media reports of there being a robbery at the Walmart were, in fact, false.

Young Harrison scholars kick off summer reading program as school year officially comes to an end Story & photos

By Laura Comppen Make your own bookmark, freestyle dance with scarves, draw cartoon characters or picture book scavenger hunts. These were just some of the super-cool choices students had while attending Harrison’s annual “Summer Reading Program Kick-Off” for Grades K-5, which takes place each June.

A carnival-like atmosphere of fun, excitement (and snacks) kicked off this year’s program. Over 100 students rotated through several bookthemed stations at Kennedy Elementary School and were thrilled to sing, dance, make art and just get excited about their chosen summer book.

“The goals of the program are to help students build and maintain knowledge — and be prepared for the next grade level — while truly increasing a desire to read year round,”

JoAnn Botch, principal at Kennedy Elementary School, said. “Families were invited so that parents can also play an active role in their child’s summer reading assignments.”

A record number of teacher volunteers were also on hand to assist with the engaging event.

To help foster a lifelong love for reading, students were given a book selection list with corresponding activities to complete over the summer. The assignment will be graded in September.

The Harrison Public Schools District says it strives to provide all students with the tools they need for continuous academic success.

The event is perhaps best summed up by the Nogueira brothers. “I liked the books about scary monsters,” Leo, 7, said; while 5-year-old Ellis chimed in: “I liked the snacks.”

Nutley Scouts (belatedly) celebrate centennial

OVID delayed it a little while, but Nutley’s Boy Scouts achieved a remarkable milestone recently.

Nutley Scout Troop 147, sponsored by the Franklin Reformed Church, completed 100 years of registration on Feb. 28, 2021.

The troop has had online virtual and outdoor meetings for the last two years and only recently starting meeting inside the Community House at the church.

The troop originally was chartered in June 1917 and lasted for two years then disbanded — likely because of World War I — as some of the leaders went off to military service.

The troop, with nine Scouts, had met in the church basement for those two years as the Community House was not built yet.

When the Community House was completed in

1923, the troop started up again on Feb. 28, 1923, and it has had continuous registration since.

The troop was actually the first organization to be sponsored and to meet in the newly built building.

Troop 147 was one of 12 Nutley Scout Troops over the years; however, today,

it is the only one in town as several churches and schools dropped sponsorship for a lack of Scouts and leaders.

Membership rose to 90 boys in the 1960s and 1970s, and as of today, is at 25.

The Troop has had 133 Eagle Scouts with the first two being Arwid Michaelson and Frank W. Scamell in 1929,

and most recently, Ethan Wanko, who became an Eagle Scout on April 26 of this year.

Scouts have contributed to hundreds of Eagle and good turn projects in town and for the Franklin Reformed Church over the years.

Three Troop members, Assistant Scoutmaster Dave Dey and Scouts Keith Greengrove and Walter Glomb Jr., received the Honor Medal for Lifesaving from the National BSA Court of Honor when they helped rescue two Scouts and Scoutmaster Al Welenofsky in a water mishap when the two Scouts went over a dam in a canoe on a Troop adventure.

The two Scouts were pinned against the dam behind their canoe.

Welenofsky rescued the two Scouts, with the aid of Greengrove, by getting them in his canoe, and while in

the water, pushed the rescue canoe away from the dam as the boys’ canoe got sucked underwater.

Welenofsky struggled to swim away from the turbulent water until he was rescued by Dey and Glomb. There had been eight drownings at the site.

Welenofsky received a local council certificate for his part.

The troop has been teaching first aid and lifesaving skills over its 100 Year history and will continue to do so.

Troop 147 Scouts have enjoyed year-round camping, hiking, summer camps, special summer hiking tours in the eastern United States, a two-week trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and a two-week canoe trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Minnesota.

In addition, Troop 147 Scouts have attended National Scout Jamborees over the years. For its 50th Anniversary in 1971, the Troop hiked the 184.5 mile Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Trail from Washington, D.C., to the Cumberland Gap in Maryland which took two weeks.

In its history, the troop has had 15 Scoutmasters.

Mike DeCarlo is the current Scoutmaster and he is aided

by Eric Buset, Scott Ballou and others.

The troop participated in the recent Scouting for Food Drive.

The 100-year-old troop meets Tuesday nights, from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

earny homeowners got some good news on the financial front at a recent meeting of the mayor and Town Council: municipal taxes are going down.

Here’s why: The governing body adopted the 2022 municipal budget of $81,157,852 — an overall increase in town spending of $675,450 over last year.

But, at the same time, according to town Finance Director Shuaib Firozvi, the local tax levy “is kept flat at $40.5 million,” while the public li-

brary levy inched up by $135,129. Still, “town ratables increased by close to 2%, the fifth year of same or reduced municipal tax levy.”

State aid remains the same as last year, at about $18.4 million, and surplus is also the same, at $5 million, Firozvi said.

All of that, Firozvi said, means that the owner of a house with an “average assessment” of $100,000 “should see a decrease of $59.65 for the municipal portion of the budget only which includes the library.”

“This municipal portion with library presents about 35.66% for the average house,” Firozvi. Still to be

computed are the two other major components of the tax bill: the local school levy and the town’s share of the county budget.

Reviewing trends in the 2022 municipal budget, Firozvi said revenues totaling about $32.1 million “for the most part are flat,” down from last year’s $36 million. Construction code fees were “significantly lower” than anticipated but state tax sharing collections were “significantly higher.”

Fees from licenses, permits, parking and court fines were “at the same level” as last year but $2.9 million in anticipated PILOT payments are “significantly higher based on in-

creases in audited revenues,” he said.

Big ticket line items that, Firozvi said, contributed to the hike in municipal expenditures included: the town’s payments to the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission, Public Library, employee salaries and pensions, municipal facility operations, Reserve for Uncollected Taxes, debt service and deferred charges.

The town’s water utility budget went up, from $8.8 million to $9.1 million due primarily to a hike in debt service of $383,500, while revenues from water sales climbed by $251,000 over last year, Firozvi said.

If politicians don’t act now, just show them the door It is past time to address the whole issue of gun violence in this country instead of just what the Democrats or Republicans want to talk about.

To purchase a firearm, you should have to go through a universal background check, no matter what state you live in. No one convicted of a felony, or who has had past mental issues, or has received a dishonorable discharge from the military, should be able to own a firearm, again, irrespective of your home state.

With the exception of shotguns, no one should be able to purchase a firearm until they reach the age of 21. Carelessness with a gun should have your privilege to own a gun revoked. To address the carnage that goes on daily in Chicago, New York, Baltimore and a host of other cities, we should bring back the death penalty for premeditated murder.

Anyone caught with an illegal firearm should receive a mandatory 10-year prison sentence.

The practice of stop and frisk should be restored and welcomed. It will keep all of us safer.

When an area is overrun with rats, do we place restrictions on the cats that are catching them?

That is exactly what we are doing to law enforcement.

Get rid of the practice of no bail. Better to be safe than sorry.

Take violent video games off the market.

Address the mental issues the COVID lockdown and isolation from their friends has caused — along with the dramatic spike in suicidal thoughts among our youth. Take what steps each community thinks would better protect our children in schools. And then we should offer prayers every day that we never experience another mass murder of our children or citizens.

If the politicians won’t act on these suggestions it will show they are not serious about protecting us and they should be shown the door.

McDonald: I’m tired of driving around at 10 p.m., looking for a parking space LETTER TO THE EDITOR To the Editor: I’d like to echo the concerns expressed in last week’s Observer by Mr. Munley about the parking problems in Kearny.

I live in the First Ward.

Parking is nothing short of horrendous.

While there are a variety of reasons for this, Mr. Munley points to one that I, too, have expressed to our elected officials.

On my block alone, I know of at least four illegal apartments, with people living in basements and attics in homes that are not zoned for more than two families.

By the way, information on zoning is available to the public.

So you have maybe 12-16 people living in a house zoned for no more than say, 10. And these additional “renters” have

a family car — perhaps two.

Translation — no parking.

And some apartments have 8-10 people living in them. Add a few cars. Translation — no parking.

The parking notwithstanding, isn’t there a health and safety issue here?

Would a call to a building inspector or perhaps a statelevel agency be in order here?

Oh and I’ve been told that “while impolite and inconsiderate,” it is not actually illegal for one car to be obviously taking up more than one parking spot.

I believe the term is “saving spots.”

Forget garbage cans — these

folks use an entire vehicle to claim their turf!

Homeowners in Kearny pay extraordinary property taxes. I won’t get started on the value received — that’s a topic for another day.

But shouldn’t at least one of the things to be returned to the homeowner and legal renters be at least the smallest possibility of a parking space somewhere close to the vicinity of your home?

I see that there was to be a public meeting on parking Tuesday June 21.

I wish I could be there but I work nights.

So, I’ll go to work and then drive around for an hour or so when I get home, praying someone pulls out of their parking spot.

Not likely at 10 p.m.

KPD: Woman arrested after punching boyfriend

O

n June 10 at 4:08 p.m., Officers Tom Collins and John Donovan were dispatched to a domestic dispute at a private home. Upon arrival, the officers met a 20-year-old woman and her 19-yearold boyfriend. Neither party disputed the claim that the girlfriend punched the now-bandaged boyfriend in the nose during an argument. The boyfriend sustained a small cut to the base of his nose.

Officers arrested the girlfriend on a charge of simple assault. She was later released with a summons.

On June 9 at 7:04 p.m., Officers Lawrence Latka and Angel Martinez were sent to the Essex County Jail in Newark where Divinete A. Jeffries, 28, of Newark, was being held on a Kearny arrest warrant carrying $1,000 bail. The warrant stemmed from a past traffic charge.

Jeffries was released from KPD headquarters after processing when a friend posted his bail.

On June 10 at 10:50 p.m.,

Officers Bryan San Martin, Danny Maganinho and Jose Castillo investigated a crash near 182 Belgrove Drive where the officers found a damaged Jeep SUV on the sidewalk which they surmised had struck a parked car before coming to a rest.

Jeep driver Jessenia M. Echevarria, 38, of Kearny, was asked to alight and was given a battery of field sobriety tests because officers allegedly observed her to have signs of impairment. Echevarria reportedly did not pass those field tests and was arrested for DWI. Following a breath test at police headquarters, Echevarria was charged with DWI, reckless driving and operating with an expired license.

She was later released to a responsible adult.

On June 11 at 7:41 a.m., Officers Mina Ekladious and Andre Fernandes were dispatched to ShopRite on a report that store management was detaining an accused shoplifter. The manager alleged that Frances A. Garrison, 58, of Kearny, concealed $303.03 of meat, seafood and hygiene

merchandise in a shopping bag and tried to carry the loot out of the store without paying.

Officers arrested Garrison and learned she was also a fugitive from justice, wanted by the Delaware County, Ohio, Sheriff’s Office. The Ohio charges involved identity fraud, grand theft and theft.

Garrison was charged with shoplifting and with being a fugitive from justice. She was held at the Hudson County Jail.

On June 12 at 8:59 p.m., Officer Matt Knighton and Sgt. Dean Gasser responded to ShopRite where Det. Jordenson Jean, working a security detail, had detained a woman on a shoplifting allegation. Store management accused Diana Ramos, 36, of Newark, with concealing $263.80 of menswear items in a reusable tote bag and trying to bail with the booty.

Ramos was charged with shoplifting and later released with a summons.

On June 13 at 9:15 a.m., Officer Sean Podolski was sent to Belleville Turnpike and Schuyler Avenue to

investigate an automobile crash.

During that investigation, he learned that Steven A. McGirr, 31, of Kearny, had allegedly been driving his nowcrashed Nissan with an expired and suspended registration. McGirr was also a wanted man in Hudson County.

Officer Podolski and a posse of backup officers arrested McGirr without incident. He was charged with driving an unregistered vehicle and later turned over to the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office to answer for his warrant.

On June 14 at 4:30 a.m., Officers Michael Ore and Bismark Karikari were dispatched to Belleville Police Headquarters where Jose F. GarciaPina, 47, of New York City, was being held in police custody. Garcia-Pina was the subject of a Kearny arrest warrant carrying $1,000 bail. The bench warrant was issued based on a May 28 traffic stop by KPD Sgt. Mike Gonzalez where Garcia-Pina was issued a number of traffic tickets.

Garcia-Pina was later released from KPD headquarters when a family member posted his bail.

Continued from Page 1 town’s Third Ward since 1996. She has the picnic each year at a park named for her late father-in-law, Normal Doyle Sr., so it’s somewhat appropriate this huge undertaking has fallen into her hands.

So now, let’s think of all she has to do to make the picnic happen, something we all probably take for granted.

First, she has to reserve the park for a June day, then hope the weather cooperates. It doesn’t always. Just ask her.

Then, there’s the food that a good chunk of is donated.

Hamburgers, hotdogs, beans, drinks, salads, beverages, more.

Then there’s getting Fred and Mr. Softee to come to provide dessert. Oh and with all that food, there’s a need to get people to cook it. And serve it. And there are tables and chairs that are needed. And of course, there has to be music, so she hires a DJ every year.

Oh and seniors, who don’t always drive, have to get there, too, right? So there’s coordinating transportation with the senior jitney buses.

And you can’t have a a picnic for seniors without raffles and giveaways and goody bags — which included a flat-screen TV donated by Councilman Rich Konopka — and gift cards many others on the council donated, including outgoing Councilwoman Sue McCurrie.

and attendees go their merry ways — there’s the huge responsibility of leaving the pavilion the way it was upon arrival. Imagine that task after hundreds of people had a great time?

And let’s add something onto this year’s picnic. After it was over this year, Doyle had to hop in her car with her son, Norman “Bogie” Doyle III, and drive south to Monmouth County, where her granddaughter, Kelsey, was to graduate high school. Oh and later that night, she and her coffee klatch were to get together for some late-night caffeine.

After a day like that, we’d imagine she probably could have used a little more than a cuppa joe, but we digress.

a memorable day each and every year. And while there are some who will thank her after it’s over, many have probably never realized just how much work, how much time, she dedicates to it ever year.

Fortunately she has her dear friend and co-coffee klatcher, Joann Carratura, right at her side along the way. Truth is, Carratura deserves similar praise for her involvement, too.

So with all this in mind, we decided to speak with some of the other volunteers who Doyle puts to work. The praise for what she does — universal.

We’ll start with Kearny Second Ward Councilman Peter Santana.

“Senior picnic is one of the seniors’ favorites. It’s also like the town cleanup, farmers market and other events in town,” Santana says. “We are fortunate as councilmembers to have people — whether it be employees, residents or even businesses — who want to help out. When this combination happens, this is what you get.

Santana’s Second Ward cohort Konopka echoed similar sentiments.

“The senior picnic is a major event for the Town of Kearny. Only one person could organize this event successfully each year, Councilwoman Carol Jean Doyle,” Konopka says. “Her hard work begins weeks before the event and continues throughout the day of the picnic. I’d like to personally thank her for what she does for Kearny seniors not only at the picnic, but during the whole year. Great job Carol!

I am proud to volunteer each year to help.

Barbara B. Goldberg, meanwhile, is the town photographer. Her work, in addition to town Web properties, is often featured here in The Observer, so like at many other events, she was at the picnic shooting photos for hours. She heaped immense praise on Doyle for her tireless efforts.

But not our Councilwoman Carol Jean Doyle,” Goldberg says. “The Superwoman and ‘Energizer Bunny’ (with her team) goes into high gear planning and organizing the event. Coordinating bus transportation to and from the Doyle Pavilion, reaching out to the mayor, councilmembers and vendors for donations — beverages, food, gifts and prizes —and the highlight of the day, the ice cream truck.

Oh, and there’s also a mini healthcare fair and of course entertainment.

“But the councilwoman doesn’t stop there. Hamburgers and hot dogs have to be grilled and side dishes served. So available councilmen and firemen are recruited as chefs. (Compliments to the chefs) Safety is paramount. KPD and the Traffic Division’s services are enlisted. Last but not least, someone has to do the heavy lifting and setup and breakdown — that’s where the DPW staff is organized. One would think that’s the end and that Carol Jean Doyle can relax.

“But no. What if it is going to rain or it is too hot for the residents? Have no fear, she has that covered, too.

The Henrietta Benstead Senior Citizens Center is on standby.

Finally, a few minutes after 3 p.m., the last senior leaves and Carol Jean relaxes, right?

Wrong. Beside assisting with the cleanup, she is already mentally planning for next year. All the thank yous in the world can’t even begin to express the gratitude for all that you do for the community.

Take a bow for a job well done, my friend!”

Lastly, while this story is about a picnic, this is hardly the only “event” Doyle heads.

There’s the annual giving tree, the Passaic River cleanup, the senior boat cruise around Manhattan, participation in Project Graduation, and frankly, we could probably fill up about four more paragraphs with the things she does.

We’ll save all that for another story or six.

Former Kearny baseball coach Jim Sickinger inducted into Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame

Whenever Jim Sickinger logs on to Facebook, he’s reminded of the impact he’s made during 25 years of coaching baseball at Kearny by the pictures he sees of former players now coaching their own kids.

“I’ve been very fortunate that over the years that numerous kids have gotten into the coaching ranks,” said Sickinger. “Whether it’s at the high school level — and I know a lot of them now with their sons playing Little League and such — they’ve all gotten involved with the game and it’s great to see. It’s great to see them giving back to the game, giving back and helping kids learn the game.”

Last Tuesday, 11 years after he last coached at Kearny High School, Sickinger received further confirmation of the impact he’s made on the sport when he was inducted into the New Jersey Scholastic Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

The ceremony took place before the NJSBCA’s annual Senior All-Star Games at Diamond Nation in Flemington.

“It’s quite an honor. You look at who’s been in there, you look at who you’re inducted with and it’s very humbling for sure,” Sickinger said. “It makes you think back to all the great coaches that I’ve had, all the great players that I’ve had in order to make all of this possible. It was a lot of reflection. I was really taken aback with the outpouring of affection from former players and coaches when they found out. A lot of text messages, emails and well wishes.”

in 1983, coached 25 years at his alma mater, the last 16 of them as head coach. During his time as head coach, Sickinger won more than 250 games, including two state sectional championships in 2000 and 2003.

The 2003 team, which featured future New York Red Bulls defender Hugh McDonald and future head coaches Frank Bifulco (Kearny) and Jairo Mendez (Harrison) reached the state Group 4 final before losing a nine-inning heartbreaker to a Shawnee team led by MLB All-Star Sean Doolittle.

While Sickinger’s teams won plenty of games in the rugged Watchung

Conference, what he was most proud of was when his kids were praised for their toughness.

“I love Kearny kids because they’re tough, hardnosed kids,” Sickinger said.

“Sometimes, we didn’t have the best players, but our teams always had tough kids.

I love when people say that about Kearny kids. That’s what we pride ourselves on — being tough kids. We play the game clean, but we’re going to be tough. I loved hearing that at the ceremony.”

Sickinger spent eight years assisting Rubeone, then, after another year as an assistant, took over as Kearny’s head coach.

Sickinger retired after the 2011 season in order to watch his daughters Kathleen and Lindsay play sports.

Even in retirement, Sickinger couldn’t completely stay away from the game he loved, especially once Kathleen and Lindsay graduated high school and went on to college. He served as the pitching coach at

Kathleen and Lindsay, as well as his wife Catherine, were beside Jim when he was honored at home plate last week. For Sickinger, that meant more than anything because they literally grew up on the fields of Kearny with their dad coaching.

“They are the most important people in my life and the fact that my wife and daughters were there meant everything to me because they were there from the beginning,” Sickinger said.

“My wife was bringing them to Kearny baseball games when they were in strollers.

That’s all they ever grew up doing. They knew how to do the scorebook and operate a scoreboard before they were in kindergarten. It was definitely a family affair so I got to spend it with the most important people to me.”

Prosecutor: Belleville man arrested on child sex abuse charges LAW & ORDER

Belleville man is under arrest on child sex abuse charges after a joint Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office/Clifton Police Department investigation — and if he’s convicted of the crimes, could be behind prison bars for a very long time, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Clifton Police Chief Thomas Rinaldi said Friday, June 3.

Andres Vasquez, 24, of Belleville was arrested June 3, 2022, and charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, first-degree kidnapping, second-degree sexual assault, third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, third-degree aggravated criminal sexual contact, third-degree criminal restraint, fourth=degree criminal sexual contact and second-degree burglary.

Valdes says on May 31, 2022, the Clifton PD responded to a report of a home invasion and sexual assault of a minor.

Thereafter, the Clifton PD collected evidence and interviewed the victim and witnesses. The investigation revealed Vasquez allegedly climbed through a window of the victim’s

Vasquez is currently on remand at the Passaic County Jail.

The State has filed a motion for pretrial detention, which will be heard by a Superior Court Judge on a date to be determined by the court.

The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office asks anyone with additional information about this incident or other incidents regarding this individual to contact them on a tips line at (877) 370-PCPO. If convicted, the sentencing on first-degree aggravated sexual assault is 10-20 years in New Jersey State Prison with 85% of the term to be served before parole eligibility pursuant to the No Early Release Act. First-degree kidnapping carries a minimum of 25 years in prison without the possibility of parole.

Second-degree sexual assault and second-degree burglary both carry 5-10 years in prison with an 85% parole disqualifier.

The sentencing on third-degree endangering the welfare of a child and on third-degree aggravated criminal sexual contact is 3-5 years in prison.

Fourth-degree criminal sexual contact carries a maximum of 18 months.

Also if convicted, Vasquez would be required to submit to an evaluation as to the nature of his sexual conduct at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Avenel.

He would also be subject to parole supervision for life and Megan’s Law registration requirements upon conviction.

It was just before 8 p.m., July 17, 2019, when Union Police Department patrol units responded to a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle in the area of Forest Drive and Galloping Hill Road, according to Assistant Prosecutors Scott Peterson and James Brady who prosecuted the case.

There, they found an unresponsive, Jeremy Maraj, 12, of Union, who was rushed to University Hospital in Newark.

He succumbed to his injuries two days later.

At trial, the state revealed at the time of the accident, Marrero was driving his work vehicle, a 2016 Nissan NV200 Cargo Van, when he struck Maraj on the shoulder of Galloping Hill Road.

Witnesses to the accident testified Marrero didn’t stop and fled the scene.

Video surveillance obtained from the area and parts from the van recovered at the scene ultimately led detectives to Marrero, the prosecutors said.

William H. Myers William H. Myers, 86, of North Arlington, died June 15, 2022.

He was ordained as a permanent deacon in the Archdiocese of Newark June 3, 1995. He has since served at Queen of Peace Church in North Arlington for the past 27 years, where people commonly knew him as Deacon Bill.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Queen of Peace Council 3428, a Fourth-Degree member of the Peter B. O’Connor Assembly, in North Arlington, and also a member of the West Hudson Retreat Group and the Friends of Erin in Kearny.

During the course of his working career as a comptroller and financial officer, he was employed by RCA, Brinks Warehousing, Artistic Enterprises, Saint Francis Hospital of Jersey City, and Haba International, Newark. Bill finished his working career as an internal auditor at the Valley Hospital of Paramus, a job he was happy to go to daily.

He is survived by his brother Robert Myers of North Arlington, his nieces Kathleen Myers (Paul Schlachter), Olivia Myers, Sue Jean (David) Lee, Mina Yi, nephew John (Katharine) Myers, grandnieces Mary and Helen Schlachter, Matilda Myers, Sabrina Lee and grandnephew Charles Myers. He was preceded by his parents Herbert and Margaret Myers, sister inlaw Maria Myers and nephew

Obituaries Robert Myers.

William was born in Kearny, attended St. Cecelia High School and moved to North Arlington after graduating from St. Peter’s College. He proudly served two years in the United States Army Third Division and was stationed in Germany.

He continued his education at Fairleigh Dickinson University, graduating with a master’s degree in business administration.

Bill was happiest when he maintained relationships with all of his relatives at home and abroad in Scotland. He kept track of everyone’s birthdays and important life events like weddings, graduations and baptisms. Just about everyone in his family referred to him simply as Uncle because he filled that role for almost everyone — even some who were not related.

William was a world traveler who enjoyed cruises. In the 80s, he bought a small shore home which became his favorite place to go and share with his family in the summer months. He was never afraid to try “just a taste” of any food on the menu — except for sushi.

There was always time for a cup of tea and a biscuit. He was never too old to see the Rockettes or to spend time at Disneyworld. His ability to remember

names and details of nearly everyone he met was remarkable even up to his last days.

The funeral will be from the Parow Funeral Home, 185 Ridge Road, North Arlington, Tuesday, June 21, at 10 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at Queen of Peace Church, North Arlington, at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Visitation was Monday, June 20.

HAPPENING IN NUTLEY Township dedicating ‘Area of Hope’ Friday night at 7

The Nutley Department of Parks and Recreation has created a “place of great hope and peace in a world that sometimes seems ravaged by sadness and anger.”

Memorial Park I has become the host for Nutley’s “Area of Hope.”

“We have determined that the best course for fulfilling a void and bringing added faith to our community was to create a place of healing and hope for our residents,” Commissioner Mauro G. Tucci

said. “Creating this in the already tranquil environment at Memorial Park I will help residents relax into clarity through meditation.”

The concept and in-house design for the project kept costs down and sped up the process. Construction began in 2021 is now fully complete.

“Where there is hope, there is faith. Where there is faith, miracles happen,” Tucci said. “We invite you to visit this area located in Memorial Park I, closest to the Chestnut Street entrance.” The official dedication will be Friday, June 24, at 7 p.m.

Chair yoga classes for senior citizens begin July 11 The Nutley Department of Parks and Recreation will offer “Chair Yoga for Seniors.”

It’s is a supported style of yoga that is accessible to all levels of fitness. In the class, participants will be guided through seated and moving meditations utilizing the support and assistance of a chair.

This program is free to Nutley senior citizens; however, space is limited.
