Blue Star program coming to Belleville The Township of Belleville is providing help and hope for senior citizens, handicapped residents and others who don’t have anyone to turn to in the event of an emergency. The township says the Blue Star program is perfect for those who live alone and need help when there is a reasonable cause to believe their health, safety and welfare is in danger. It’s also a godsend for those who are not physically able to call for assistance or admit emergency service personnel into their home. With the Blue Star program, citizens may register vital information with the police department in the event of an emergency. In addition, a house key is kept in a secure location at police headquarters — and with the resident’s neighbor, if desired. “This program gives police the ability to help the vulnerable in our community in an almost-immediate way,” Mayor Michael Melham said. “God forbid there’s ever an emergency, but residents can have peace of mind that someone will be able to help them if there is.” The form to join the Blue Star program is located on the township website at www.bellevillenj.org/_Content/pdf/BlueStar-Program.pdf The form must be printed out and completed. The forms and a house key may be dropped off at police headquarters 24 hours a day. For more information about this program, contact Sgt. Anthony Abate at 973-450-3348 or send an email to aabate@bellevillenj.org.
