ou may already be wondering why there’s a photo of a bridge on Kearny Avenue with the headline “14 Months, 4 Mayors.” By the time you finish reading, it’ll all make sense as the bridge has a connection to two of the aforementioned four Kearny mayors — Therese and Arthur Jones, whose photos are seen to the right of this text.

Back in 1986, when I went from Schuyler to Lincoln School for junior high, I quickly learned we’d be taking a marking period — or maybe it was a semester — of Kearny history.

Fortunately, my teacher was Anthony Cacavella Sr., who was one of the best teachers

he Town of Kearny is taking steps to partly rescind a law that compels local business owners to get town approval before putting up congratulatory banners.

The ordinance, part of the municipal zoning code, sparked controversy when the town’s zoning officer/ construction official Anthony Chisari warned a long-time Kearny Avenue professional she was risking a daily fine of up to $1,000 for having illegally displayed a banner announcing the addition of a granddaughter, Elliana Belle, to her family.

That threat prompted Bernadette Antonelli, owner of Arlington Tax and Bookkeeping Service since 1985, to write a terse letter to The Observer in November 2021 complaining about the town’s action over an innocuous personal matter that had no negative impact on her neighbors.

Nevertheless, Antonelli was under the threat of a big penalty unless she either removed the banner within one week or applied to the town Zoning Board for a variance to hang it from the porch of her business.

(Chisari later withdrew the threatened penalty.)

section of the zoning code to read that, “… a temporary banner in the Business District may be displayed temporarily to advertise a grand opening, sale, business anniversary or other celebratory milestones for a period not to exceed 30 days within any nine-month period. The banner shall be limited to a size no greater than 15 square feet. A permit shall not be required for such a temporary banner.”

The council will conduct a public hearing on the amended ordinance Feb. 8.

Fourth Ward Councilwoman Susan McCurrie, an attorney who heads the ordinance committee, said the letter to The Observer helped sensitize the lawmakers to a unique situation and “we became aware this was something we should revisit in the ordinance,” especially if the law could be interpreted in such a way to pose an undue hardship on a business owner.

“We don’t want that,” McCurrie said.

So a compromise is being struck, she said.

“Under the amendment, the town will waive the permit requirement for a temporary banner. But if you leave it up beyond the time limit specified, you will be subject to a violation notice.”

4-way stops being placed on Seeley at Chestnut Street & Rutherford Place

ack in 2017, when a 71-year-old woman was mowed down — then thrown 10 feet in the air, in fact — by a speeding driver on the western position of Seeley Avenue, we at The Observer, in no joking manner, dubbed the street the “Seeley Speedway.” For years, we’ve watched from our office, at building no.

39 Seeley, as driver after driver would often speed up the street, sometimes getting a jump start from as far as Schuyler Avenue, if the light at Elm Street was green, all the way to Kearny Avenue and beyond.

And when that traffic signal at Kearny Avenue turned yellow, it was often as if it triggered drivers to speed up so they could fly past the main thoroughfare in town to continue to the two blocks that remained on Seeley.

You would think the wait for the light at Seeley and Kearny was 20 minutes the way some drivers sped up.

When this woman was hit nearly five years ago, to those of us who spend time on Seeley Avenue, it was hardly a surprise, shocking though it was.

But now, thanks to an ordinance adopted by the Mayor and Kearny Town Council Tuesday, Jan. 25, that excessive speeding should finally be tempered.

We repeat, should.

The ordinance, which had the full support of Mayor Alberto G. Santos and all members of the Council, will create fourway stops at the intersection of Seeley and Chestnut Street and a few blocks away at Seeley and Rutherford Place. Chestnut is just two streets from the Elm Street light, and Rutherford is just three blocks from Chestnut and two from Kearny Avenue.

The signs will be installed by the Department of Public Works once Town Clerk Patricia Carpenter publishes a public notice to make the new “law” official.

So speed demons, beware — you’ll no longer be able to treat Seeley Avenue as your personal race course.

Man accused of killing 2-month-old released from custody

he man who stands accused of killing his own 2-monthold daughter inside a North Arlington home earlier this month is out on bail, awaiting trial, NJ.com and NorthJersey.com are reporting.

Aaron Medrano, 27, is “staying at his parents’ home” in Dover, the reports say, and he reportedly has an ankle monitor attached. It is not immediately clear whether he’s permitted to return to North Arlington, where he lived on Schuyler Avenue, (home is seen in photo) and

where his fiancé, Patricia Artese, 25, also charged in the crime, is believed to still live.

Bergen County Jail inmate records indicate Medrano, who was taken into custody for a second time Jan. 11, was released from the jail 10 days later, Jan. 21, at 4:53 p.m. When he was taken into custody a second time, bail had been listed at $500,000; however, those records are no longer available.

The new published reports also indicate the baby, who was called Giovanna, likely experienced abuse her entire 2 months on this earth.

The incident leading to all this occurred as follows,

according to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella: On Thursday, Dec. 23, 2021, at approximately 6:26 p.m., the North Arlington Police Department received a 911 call from a resident of 505 Schuyler Ave., North Arlington, who reported their 2-month-old daughter was not breathing. The child was subsequently transported to Hackensack University Medical Center.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit was contacted by the Division of Child Protection and Permanency after hospital personnel found numerous injuries on the child. An investigation by detectives from the North Arlington Police Department and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office revealed Medrano reportedly caused the injuries to the child.

Sadly, on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2022, the baby died from her injuries.

Six days later, on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2022, Medrano was re-arrested and charged with murder.

After the BCPO announced the charges, North Arlington Mayor Daniel H. Pronti reminded residents, not just in North Arlington, to speak out and report suspected cases of abuse of any kind — and for that matter, any instances of suspected crimes.

Just below and outside of the driver’s door, Officer Donovan saw a black plastic bag containing several empty 24 ounce Budweiser cans. When Officer Donovan awoke the driver, Gutierrezelvay opened the driver’s door, retrieved the bag of empty tall boys and put them inside the car.

Officer Donovan got more than he bargained for when he invited Gutierrezelvay to step out of the car to perform field-sobriety tests: a brown stain on the back of his pants of presumed excremental origin. The officers arrested Gutierrezelvay after he could not pass field-sobriety tests.

Gutierrezelvay was charged with DWI, DWI in a school zone, unlicensed driving, reckless driving,

refusal to submit to breath testing, open container of alcohol in a vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident. He was later released to a responsible party.

Dennis A. Quintovargas, 38, of Union City, the owner of the Hyundai driven by Gutierrezelvay, was charged via summons with allowing an impaired person to drive and allowing an unlicensed person to drive.

On Jan. 22, Det. Kyle Plaugic arrested Kathia A. Mansillafernandez, 26, of Elizabeth, after she turned herself in at police headquarters. Mansillafernandez was charged with filing false reports to law enforcement and later released with a summons.

It was alleged on Dec. 6 at 3:15 a.m., Mansillafernandez called police to the intersection of Belgrove Drive and Wilkinson Terrace and reported her 2005 Volkswagen Touareg as stolen. Officer Paul Duran took a police report; however, minutes later,

This plaque bears the name ‘Jones Memorial Bridge,’ which was dedicated in the late 1930s, to honor the memory of Kearny Mayors Arthur Jones and Therese Jones. The bridge, on Kearny Avenue, traverses the old railroad tracks. The two were married to each other and Therese, Kearny’s only female and un-elected mayor ever, replaced Arthur as the town’s leader after he died, suddenly, while in office, in 1938.

We learned so much about the town and its rich history, from Scottish immigration to the location of Kearny Castle and Schuyler Mansion to every street name in the uptown portion of the town — and so much more beyond that.

We also learned who the mayors were — Henry J. Hill, a Republican, held the seat at the time. Daniel Sansone, a Democrat, became mayor by the time we graduated in 1988.

Somehow, though, either from simply forgetting, or not paying close enough attention, it took a visit to the Kearny Museum this summer to realize that from October 1938 to December 1939, Kearny had four mayors — including the one and only woman who ever served and who became mayor after her husband died whilst in office.

The year 1938 started off with Arthur H. Jones, Kearny’s sixth mayor, a Republican, in office.

You might not realize it, but you likely travel on something named after Jones (and his better half ) whenever you’re on Kearny Avenue in the north end of town.

The “bridge,” seen on Page 1, over the old railroad tracks, that spans just north of Locust to just south of Columbia Avenue, is called the Jones Memorial Bridge and there is a plaque bearing the Jones name in its northwest corner.

Tragically, Jones died Oct. 4, 1938 and his wife, Therese A. Jones, was soon thereafter appointed to fill his seat until an election could determine who the next mayor would be. Mrs. Jones served from Oct. 12, 1938 to Jan. 1, 1939, the shortest term anyone has had as Kearny mayor. In yet another tragic twist, Mrs. Jones died Dec. 30, 1939, so had she run for the seat and won, she, like her husband, would have died in office.

Nearly 90 years after her brief tenure, Therese Jones remains the one and only woman to have served as the town’s mayor. She was also never elected to the position. And that could be why the Kearny Museum does not give her the

title of Kearny’s seventh mayor.

Of course, Jones is not the only woman to have a connection to the mayoralty. In 1995, Councilwoman Carol Jean Doyle, a Democrat, challenged then-Mayor Leo R. Vartan, a Republican, for the seat, but she ultimately fell short. That was, perhaps, one of the most exciting and contentious elections in Kearny’s political history. Now, had Doyle run two years later, in 1997, this would be a completely different entry to this story (that was the year the late Peter McIntyre, a sacrificial lamb candidate, upset Vartan to become mayor. McIntyre served one term until being ousted by Santos in the 1999 Democratic primary.)

In November 1938, the man given the title Kearny’s seventh mayor, Joseph A. Frobisher Sr., a Republican, won election and was sworn in Jan. 1, 1939. Tragically, he became Kearny’s second mayor within 14 months, to die in office, on Dec. 27, 1939 — just three days before Mrs. Jones.

He was 67.

If the Frobisher name seems familiar, it is because Frobisher’s son, Joseph E. Jr., is the namesake for Kearny’s American Legion post. Joseph Jr. was killed in action in the Great War, or World War I, an early wartime pilot who was shot down over France Sept. 10, 1918, aged 22.

Meanwhile, the very day of Frobisher Sr.’s death, Frederick Law, of the GOP, was appointed to finish that term as mayor — and he’d go on to win the mayoralty in 1940, serving through 1943.

He was Kearny’s eighth mayor — or was he really the ninth?

Since we noted Mrs. Jones was the shortest-serving mayor in Kearny history, we also note Mayor Alberto G. Santos, a Democrat, who became mayor Jan. 1, 2000, ascended to Kearny’s longest-serving mayor in 2020, when he overtook the-late Joseph M. Healey, also a Democrat, who served for 20 years — from 1949 to 1969.

All of Kearny’s elected mayors, save for Santos, each won two-year terms. It wasn’t until 2005 that Kearny switched to four-year terms for mayor and council.

Driver from Nick’s Towing saves man from a burning car on the Jersey Turnpike

ohn Jay “JJ” Tashjian was traveling northbound on the NJ Turnpike, returning to Nick’s Towing Service in Rutherford, from Newark, in the early morning hours of Sunday, Jan. 23, 2022, when he noticed a vehicle that crashed off the roadway and came to rest in a tall grassy area approximately 50 feet into the meadows in Kearny.

It was on fire.

He was the first person on the scene and immediately contacted Nick’s Towing Dispatch, who in turn contacted NJ Turnpike Operations and informed them of the situation.

Tashjian ran to the burning car and rescued the driver from the vehicle, pulling him out and getting him to safety and warmth inside his tow truck.

Once they were clear of the vehicle, it became fully engulfed in flames.

Turnpike Operations were updated as to the severity of the situation as the tall grass around the vehicle was beginning to catch fire.

The NJ State Police, Kearny Fire Department as well as EMS were expedited to the scene.

Once the fire was extinguished and the owner of the vehicle was being administered assistance by the EMS, Nick’s Towing team recovered the vehicle back onto the roadway, where it was safely loaded onto a flatbed and transported to Nick’s.

“I couldn’t be more proud of John Jay’s efforts,” Nicholas F. Testa, owner of Nick’s Towing, said. “He is a courageous young man. In this day and age when most people would simply drive by a scenario like this, he instead jumped into action and put himself in jeopardy to save another person. Towing See HERO, Page 18

to the school cafeteria, where they lay down mats for their practice session, because that’s the only place available and no meals are being served then.

To cure that particular inconvenience — and to foster wider fitness opportunities for both students and the wider community — the Belleville Board of Education is going above and beyond.

At its Jan. 24 meeting, the BOE voted 5-1 (Nicole Daddis dissented and Erika Jacho was absent) to execute a 5-year lease with Cortlandt Holdings LLC, owner of the Work-OLite industrial property at 522 Cortlandt St. for 25,000 square feet of space as an “auxiliary athletic facility and school gym annex.”

Under the lease terms, the BOE will pay $15 per square feet — a total of $300,000 — for the period of Feb. 1, 2022, through June 30, 2022, and then $20 per square foot — $500,000 — from July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023, “and the remaining years at a 2% increase.”

Richard Tomko, local superintendent of schools, recommended renting the warehouse space in the township’s Valley section near School No. 9 on Ralph Street as the best of those few real estate options available, including a space near the Municipal Building that the township ultimately acquired.

As of now, Tomko said, plans call for outfitting the space to accommodate wrestling rooms, fitness and cross training, cardio deck, off season/all sports, speed training, indoor sprint/jogging and walking tracks, retractable batting cages, cheer and dance rooms, yoga and aerobics studio, retractable drone course, rock-walls and ROTC drilling.

“Our kids have spent much of the past two years sitting inside [at home, doing remote learning] and we need to give them more space to engage in active recreational activities,” Tomko said. This is the chance for the district to do just that, he added, and not just

for the students but for the community at large.

While students will be given priority in using the facility, Tomko said there should be ample opportunity to rent out space to outside groups and apply those revenues to the upkeep of the facility.

Tomko acknowledged there would likely be additional costs involved in retrofitting the building to install equipment and supplies for each of the recreational activities, but he said the district would look to the landlord for assistance.

Tomko could not project what those costs might total.

“We have money in reserve in our budget for the lease payments,” he said. “Some of our other existing leases will be expiring shortly.” And, he said, “we’ll try to get some of the equipment either through donations or through grant sponsors.”

Sometime in the next few weeks, Tomko said, the district will convene a meeting of the “stakeholders” in the project to begin hashing out logistics and scheduling for use of the facility to which the district takes title as of Feb. 1.

During the public portion of the Jan. 24 meeting, resident Vincent Frantantoni took issue with the plan as a wasteful real estate boondoggle.

“We don’t need it,” he said.

“It sounds good until you realize it’s another lease deal.

At the end of the lease, you’re at the mercy of the landlord.”

A better move, he said, would be for the BOE to reacquire the old School No. 1 property to hold in reserve as the township’s population continues to grow and additional class space is needed.

But Tom Egan, who was appointed state monitor of township schools in 2014 in response to the district’s shaky fiscal condition, defended the lease as “absolutely a great idea. When the opportunity presented itself, it was difficult to say ‘no’ to it, especially since many districts in the area are struggling to find extra [recreational] space,” Egan said.

Locals Guerriero, Kearns hoping for shot with USFL Ever since they were youngsters, playing recreation football in North Arlington, Petey Guerriero and Brian Kearns were inseparable.

“We’ve been the best of friends since we were three years old,” Kearns said of Guerriero. “We played all sports together.”

But they were separated in high school with Kearns going to Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey and Guerriero becoming a star at Lyndhurst High. Kearns went on to have a great career at Stonehill University and Guerriero going on to lead the nation in rushing at Monmouth University.

Through it all, the two have been workout partners, spending a lot of their athletic training time at FASST in Lyndhurst. But both always had dreams of becoming professional football players.

Guerriero had brief stops in the camps of the New York Jets, the Carolina Panthers and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Kearns just recently graduated from Stonehill with a degree in business management.

And now, the two are working out with the hopes of becoming some of the players selected to play in the rebirth of the United States Football League that will hold a 2022 schedule beginning in April with all of

the games slated to be played in Birmingham, Alabama.

Both Guerriero and Kearns are extremely hopeful that they will be among the 200 or so players signed to contracts to play in the USFL, which will field teams with the same names that the USFL had during its first run more than 30 years ago.

Yes, there will be a team called the New Jersey Generals, but the games will all be played in Birmingham.

There will be teams named the Houston Gamblers, Chicago Blitz, Los Angeles Express and the Tampa Bay Bandits.

It’s a little strange how this league will operate with no hometown fans, but it’s going to happen and the two local products – Kearns from North Arlington, Guerriero from Lyndhurst – hope to be a part of it.

“It’s just another opportunity for me,” Guerriero said.

“I’m just getting ready for the draft (Feb. 22 and 23). I would like to think that I’ll be one of the more sought-after running backs. I had some doubts that I’d get another chance, but if this is my opportunity (to get back to the NFL), then I’m taking it.

I’m grateful to have another chance.”

Lyndhurst’s Okerulu to gain induction to the St. Anselm College Hall of Fame

When Darlington Okerulu was a basketball player at Hudson Catholic in Jersey City, he quickly became one of the best all-around players in the area.

There was only one problem. Okerulu was considered a power forward and there aren’t many 6-foot-3 power forwards in major college basketball.

“I knew I was good enough to play (NCAA) Division I basketball,” said Okerulu, who now resides in Lyndhurst with his wife and two infant children. “I knew I also wanted to get a free education, so there was a level of frustration. I decided to just take the best opportunity that was out there.”

The opportunity to secure a college scholarship came after taking a trip to Providence with his AAU basketball team.

At that tournament in Rhode Island, Okerulu was introduced to Sean Ryan, an assistant coach at St. Anselm College, a small private school in Manchester, New Hampshire.

“Sean said that he watched me all summer,” Okerulu said. “He said that he saw me at 6-foot-3 going up against 6-foot-11 guys. Coach Ryan made me feel so comfortable.

I really was getting pretty insecure from people telling me that I wasn’t big enough or not good enough. That really motivated me. I started to carry a bit of a chip on my shoulder.

I then started to use my size to my advantage.”

It turned out to a blessing for Okerulu.

“There was a spiritual element to the school,” Okerulu said of St. Anselm. “When I walked into the place, I felt at peace. It was hard to explain, but I knew it’s where I wanted to play. I knew that it was where I was supposed to be.”

Okerulu had an outstanding

career at St. Anselm, graduating in 2006. He remains the all-time leader in rebounds at the school, collecting 953 rebounds over 119 games. He also finished his career with 1,343 points, which is also among the top scorers in the school’s history. Okerulu led the Hawks to consecutive Northeast-10 Conference championships in 2005 and 2006, the first league championships that the Hawks captured in a decade.

Okerulu, now 38 years old, said that there “is a level of peace” that comes from a job well done.

“I’ve had a lot of peaks and valleys in my life, but this might be the ultimate peak,” said Okerulu, whose parents were born in Nigeria, but he and his four siblings were raised solely by his mother, Kenechi, a nurse. “I can’t repay the school has given me, what the game of basketball has given me. I really wasn’t giving it (the Hall of Fame) a thought. When I got the call, I couldn’t believe it.”

Okerulu will share the evening with his wife, Melissa and his three-year-old twins Charlie and Bianca.

“I told my mother that I could get a scholarship to college,” Okerulu said. “I didn’t expect to be the all-time leading rebounder at the school. I just took things as they came.

All I wanted was to be remembered. Now, people are going to walk through the hallways of

But in two weeks, it will be a night for Okerulu and his family to enjoy his career.

“It’s a time for reflection,” Okerulu said. “It’s a time for brotherhood. There was a sense of playing the game the right way. That’s what I tried to do. I always had the love and camaraderie for my teammates.

I have nothing but respect for my teammates.”

And his teammates will get the chance to say they played with a Hall of Famer like Darlington Okerulu.

For his efforts, Golon has been selected as The Observer Athlete of the Week for the past two weeks.

Kearny/North Arlington/Secaucus head coach Tim Firth, a teacher in the Kearny school system, said that Golon has been showing improvement every step of the way.

“He’s grown and matured,” Firth said. “He’s gotten better every single year. All Matt did during the pandemic was play hockey. But I could have never predicted how dominant of a scorer he would become. Yes, he’s incredibly fast, but he’s not only just fast. He’s incredibly talented as a stick handler.

He has a variety of moves.

When the game starts, he puts it in an extra gear. It’s really incredible to watch.”

Golon comes from a hockey family. His older brother Sean played for the co-operative a

“I really didn’t have super high expectations for this year,” Golon said. “But I had some success my freshman year (17 goals), so I was a little optimistic. I had a tough year last year. I was definitely motivated to get ready for this season.”

Golon has been more than ready. He has scored 22 goals and collected 18 assists thus far, well on his way to a 30goal season. The team is doing fine, posting a 7-4-5 record (which looks more like an area code), but they have won three straight games against Johnson Regional, Newark East Side and Clifton.

Over the last two weeks, Golon has been lights out. He had seven goals and six assists in three games two weeks ago and last week, Golon tallied five goals (two in the 6-3 win over Johnson, two in the 6-1 win over Newark East Side and a goal and an assist in the

“Polycoria” is a condition that affects the pupils in one or both eyes and presents in two forms. A person who has true polycoria has at least two separate pupils in one eye, each with its own ability to dilate and constrict. Guerriero said that the NFLPA (the players’ union) reached out to him to see if he would be interested in playing in the USFL. “I knew that if I was going to do that, then I was going to be the best running back in the USFL,” Guerriero said.

“I want to leave no doubt that I can play pro football. If I’m getting another opportunity, then I’m going to run with it.”

Guerriero said that he really didn’t give up on his dream, but there were fleeting thoughts of getting on with the rest of his life.

few years ago and younger brother Owen is an up-andcomer who will probably join his brother on the team next year.

Firth had no problem with naming Golon as one of the team’s captains.

“He had the most hockey experience of anyone,” Firth said. “He’s played so much hockey in his life.”

Just how much?

“I guess I started playing

when I was about four (years old),” Golon said. “I just love the sport.”

Golon is also extremely serious about his contribution to the sport and his young team.

“From the experiences I’ve had with him, he’s pretty straight forward,” Golon said.

“He’s not a quiet kid, but he’s not rambunctious either. He’s pretty level headed.”

“I think it’s my responsibility to lead by example,” Golon said. “I definitely need to be more vocal with my teammates. I generally keep to myself. I’m not as outgoing

as some kids. Hopefully, I can lead this team to a playoff berth (in the Northern New Jersey Interscholastic Hockey League-McMullen Division).”

But can Golon continue his incredible scoring burst?

“I think I can,” Golon said.

“I think I can keep playing the way I have been. It’s more of a goal of help this team win than to score goals. It’s been a very interesting season. We have a lot of young kids, but the kids have talent. We’ve been having loads of fun. I just go out there and play my game. I want to keep it going.

I’m slowly researching my options. I definitely haven’t

reached my full potential. If I reach my full potential, I can do twice as much. But I’ve been having loads of fun this year. I’m just going out there and playing my game.”

The team has tough NNJIHL games this week against West Orange, Johnson Regional and Newark East Side.

Firth has faith in his junior captain.

“He has great speed and vision,” Firth said. “He knows where he has to be and knows how to get there. If we supply him with the puck, he’s going to make a play. Matt’s just an incredible player.”

Obituaries Bernard William Dutka Bernard William Dutka, 89, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022.

The funeral will be from the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 9 a.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrate at St. Cecilia Church, Kearny, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home on Tuesday, Feb. 1, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Born in Jersey City, Mr. Dutka was a lifelong Kearny resident.

Bernard served in the U.S. Army from 1958 until 1960.

He was employed as a messenger for Valley National Bank in Kearny for 10 years before retiring. Prior, he was and agent for the IRS in Newark, for 15 years and before that he was a tool maker for RCA in Harrison.

Mr. Dutka was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

He is survived by his sister, Emily Sawyer.

Bernard was predeceased by his parents Charles and Antoinette (nee Zarnowski) Dutka, one brother Charles Dutka Jr. and brother-in-law Ronald Sawyer.

Continued from Page 5 the “stolen” SUV was located crashed into a parked car and a utility pole, and abandoned near 20 South Midland Ave. Det. Kyle Plaugic took over the investigation. After reviewing area surveillance footage and conducting interviews, the detective developed cause to believe that Mansillafernandez crashed her own car on South Midland Avenue and then fled the scene in a friend’s vehicle that had been following her.

Minutes later, after having been dropped off on Belgrove Drive, Mansillafernandez filed a stolen vehicle report with Officer Duran.

Officer Duran, who also investigated the car crash, issued to Mansillafernandez three traffic summonses: careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident.

On Jan. 23 at 1:31 a.m., Officers Bryan San Martin and Taylor Latka responded to a private home on a report of a domestic violence incident. The officers learned a couple had returned home after a social night out and an argument had erupted.

Officers arrested a 34-year-old Kearny man on allegations he slapped his girlfriend’s face, punched her abdomen and injured her finger and neck in an assault. The man was charged by summons with simple assault and later released from the police station.

Tashjian, 35, he has been an employee of Nick’s for nearly four years and is Testa’s nephew by marriage. He grew up in the towing industry and is primarily a heavy-duty tow truck operator towing semi-trucks but also fills in when necessary to tow passenger vehicles. He is married and a lifelong resident of Paramus.
