N

o one has ever accused the Passaic River of having the same pizazz as the River Thames.

And yet, by the end of 2022, the new Bergen County Boathouse, at Riverside County Park, Lyndhurst, near the banks of the Passaic River, might just be the envy of rowers across the globe — including those who use the famous English river.

Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco and Commission Chairman Steve Tanelli (of North Arlington) joined a host of rowing aficionados at the park Friday, July 23 — where construction of the new boathouse is already underway — for a

ceremonial groundbreaking.

It is estimated, when all is said and done, the project will cost $7 million and will be funded by grants from the Bergen County Open Space Trust Fund and the NJ Department of Environmental Protection’s Green Acres program.

It’s the centerpiece of what will be a major overhaul to the Lyndhurst portion of the park.

Tedesco called the project “visionary” as he addressed the crowd assembled.

“When I became county executive, I made a commitment that the preservation of open space, the protection of our environment and enhancement of our park system, would be among my top priorities. Well, today, this groundbreaking is another example of that commitment,”

Tedesco said. “The site behind me … will soon become the state-of-the-art Bergen County Rowing Center. …

This boathouse will satisfy the increased demand for competitive rowing by the public with expanded access to both the sport of rowing and our waterways.”

Tedesco says he’s pleased the new rowing center will replace what is currently a dilapidated, makeshift setup.

“The new boathouse will replace a currently repurposed outdated structure currently used to store rowing equipment with a 14,285 square-foot, two story multipurpose boathouse. It will feature more high capacity

rowing storage, as well as indoor recreational community space,” he said.

He says it will become “the ideal gathering space” for rowing and environmental groups to gather. Saying this, Tedesco looked to Lyndhurst Mayor Robert B. Giangeruso, present at the cutting, and he said the new building could also be used by the Board of Commissioners for meetings “on the road,” as could North Arlington.

The project was conceptualized in 2019 and is now coming to fruition thanks to the work of all involved, the county executive says.

“Once complete, the Bergen County Rowhouse will be the

best in North Jersey if not the state of New Jersey. We only build the best,” Tedesco said.

He also heaped praise on the Passaic River Rowing Association, an organization that has offered rowing opportunities to the South Bergen community since 2003, and that will run the boathouse once it’s complete. He also thanked the Passaic River Coalition for its stewardship of the river.

Tanelli, meanwhile, has played an integral part in this project — and another coming down the line that will see major additions to the park. He called the ribbon-cutting a Continued on the next page

That master plan ensures that “not only are our parks more accessible, but that they also meet the demands of the 21st century,” Tanelli said. “As one of the most densely populated portions, South Bergen was identified as lacking open space. …We could always expand our existing park space to address the deficit.

“Throughout the course of the next 18 to 36 months, Riverside County Park will undergo a complete revitalization that will increase exercise and recreation opportunities for South Bergen residents while offering historic access to the lower Passaic River. When all is said and done, Riverside County Park will have a brand new 1,200 square-foot comfort station, a 2,600 square-foot amphitheater capable of accommodating 200 people, two fitness stations, a state-ofthe-art children’s playground all which was made possible by grant funding.”

Tanelli says he’s extremely proud of the work that went into the project and that will be complete by next year’s end.

Though not present at the groundbreaking, NJDEP Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette noted Gov. Philip D. Murphy is squarely behind this project.

While the project is underway, rowers will not be able to launch from the boathouse area weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the PRRA said on its website.

Department of Justice alleges Mattia orchestrated unneeded prescription scheme

By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com A former candidate for the Belleville Township Council in 2020 and a former pharmaceutical sales representative was charged last week for his role in an alleged scheme to defraud a telecommunications company’s health care plan by billing for medically unnecessary compounded prescriptions, Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig announced.

Carmine A. Mattia Jr., 60, formerly of Belleville, now of Cedar Grove, was indicted on one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and three counts of health care fraud.

He will have his initial appearance in court on a date to be determined.

According to documents filed in the case and statements made in court: The alleged scheme here centered on Mattia’s work as a sales representative for a marketing company and various compounding pharmacies, for which he sold compounded medications, including pain creams, scar

creams, wound creams and metabolic supplements and vitamins.

Mattia was also a fulltime employee of the telecommunications company and was a union representative for the company’s employees.

Between April 2016 and July 2016, Mattia allegedly participated in a conspiracy to submit fraudulent prescriptions for compounded medications to the telecommunications company’s health care plan. The compounding pharmacies paid Mattia a commission in exchange for each prescription for compounded medication Mattia billed to the company’s health care plan.

The U.S. Attorney said to fraudulently increase his profits as a sales representative, Mattia reportedly recruited Individual-1 to receive medically unnecessary compounded medications.

Mattia paid Individual-1 to induce Individual-1 to receive these medications.

Mattia also allegedly secured the signature of a New Jersey doctor, Robert

Agresti, on prescription forms for Individual-1. Agresti and Individual-1 did not have a doctor/patient relationship, Agresti did not determine if Individual-1 needed the compounded medications selected and he did not examine Individual-1. Honig said.

According to a previous report issued by the same U.S. Attorney’s Office, Agresti admitted that from November 2014 through September 2017, he participated in a scheme to defraud health insurance plans, including New Jersey state and local employee

health benefit programs, by prescribing medically unnecessary compounded prescriptions on behalf of a company that marketed those products.

Agresti was paid $300 in cash for every prescription he authorized for compounded medication, regardless of medical necessity. Agresti signed the prescriptions brought to him by other conspirators without examining or speaking with the patients. Multiple health benefit programs paid more than $8.9 million as a result of Agresti’s phony prescriptions.

Agresti, 64, pled guilty June 26, 2018, to conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and awaits sentencing. He was initially to be sentenced Oct. 30, 2018, but it’s not immediately clear why that hasn’t yet happened. He faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense.

Meanwhile, Mattia’s participation in the scheme caused a loss to the telecommunications company’s health care plan of approximately $100,000.

The conspiracy charge and substantive health care fraud charges each carry a statutory maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense, whichever is greatest.

Mattia narrowly lost (55% to 45% of the vote) to long-time incumbent Councilwoman Marie Strumolo Burke in a municipal election a little over a year ago. He received the endorsement of the township’s Mayor Michael Melham. In a Facebook post, dated April 13, 2020, Melham

enthusiastically offered praise for the now-indicted former Belleville resident.

“In order to continue our progress, my council colleagues and I need someone committed to the neighborhood and dedicated to the vision of a Better Belleville. That’s why, I, along with several other council members and many notable members of the community are supporting and endorsing Carmine Mattia Jr. for Belleville First Ward Council,” Melham wrote at the time. “You only get one choice and I’m personally asking you to fill in the round circle on your vote-by-mail ballot for Carmine Mattia.

He has my total support and commitment, and I know he will do an excellent job representing the entire First Ward of Belleville.

“Carmine is a lifelong Silver Laker, a family man and dedicated to the community as he served as a wrestling coach for many years. Beyond that, he’s a homeowner/ taxpayer and is a union guy (IBEW Local 827). Carmine has seen a change and shift not only in Silver Lake, but the entire First Ward. I assure you that he will be committed to all First Ward residents.”

Mattia also received the support of Naomy De Peña, who recently became Belleville’s first-ever Latina deputy mayor.

“With all due respect, my council colleagues must share the same values and vision in order to continue seeing progress in our township,” she wrote in an April 23, 2020, Facebook post.

“That is why I’m officially endorsing Carmine Mattia Jr. for Belleville First Ward Council.”

KPD: Burglar with no-bail warrant sent to the county

Bergen Ave. man charged with kidnapping: KPD Department says he held 2 women at gunpoint in his apartment

A

woman and her friend were held at gunpoint against their will inside a Bergen Avenue apartment and the man who reportedly “kidnapped” them is now behind bars, without bail, the Kearny Police Department reported.

On July 15 at 6 p.m., Officer Anthony Oliveira took a victim’s report alleging hours earlier, Lefty F. Sanders Jr., 21, of Kearny, had held her and another adult woman against their will at gunpoint in his apartment after they reportedly engaged in an argument. After approximately two hours of allegedly being pushed around by Sanders and kept in the apartment against her will, the victim reported Sanders freed her and the other woman.

Det. Jordenson Jean headed the investigation, after which he signed complaints charging Sanders, in absentia, with kidnapping, posses-

CRIME IN KEARNY sion of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, aggravated assault with a firearm, and simple assault.

On July 16, Kearny police personnel and members of the Hudson County Regional SWAT Team executed a search warrant at Sanders’ Kearny apartment. No one was home at the time, but officers recovered from the apartment one Ruger LCP .380 handgun, its ammunition magazine and four, .380 caliber ammunition cartridges.

Later that night, just after 11 p.m., Sgt. Pat Becker and Dets. Tim Castle, Mike Andrews, Jean and Officers Ruben Rivera and JeanPaul Duran observed Sanders being driven into his apartment complex parking lot in a Mercedes SUV with two other men.

The officers moved in to arrest Sanders but the driver allegedly

tried to drive off. He didn’t make it far, though, before the three men bailed out on foot in another part of the parking lot.

Officers chased down and arrested the three fleeing men, identified as Sanders, Bryce D. Jiles, 19, of Brooklyn, and Andre J. Bly, 39, of Manhattan. From the floor of their Mercedes SUV, the officers recovered an unsecured Smith & Wesson M&P Shield 9 mm handgun loaded with eight hollow-point ammunition cartridges.

All three men were charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of prohibited devices and resisting arrest by flight. Bly, the driver, was additionally charged with eluding, careless driving and certain persons not to possess weapons. Sanders was additionally booked on his outstanding warrant stemming from the original incident.

All three men were remanded to the Hudson County Jail, South Kearny.

n June 30 at 11:43 p.m., Sgts. Tom Pontrella and Ben Wuelfing, Officers Chris Montes, Bryan San Martin and Taylor Latka and Det. Mike Andrews responded to the area of Quincy Avenue and Elm Street on a report of two men breaking into parked cars.

Sgt. Wuelfing located the two suspects a block away on Devon Street, based on the caller’s description.

While Sgt. Wuelfing was interviewing the two men, a witness approached him to give further information. Other officers contacted the owner of a Toyota Corolla believed to have been broken into. The car’s owner confirmed its glove compartment was freshly damaged and cash and change were missing from the car.

Parents, please: Be sure kids are safe when biking

A

few weeks ago, two youngsters were riding a bicycle east on Garfield Avenue toward Davis Avenue in Kearny.

After reviewing a shocking doorbell cam video of the incident, it is clear the driver of the bike, approaching a stop sign, made little to no attempt to brake and halt for the sign, instead opting to pass a vehicle preparing to make a right turn onto Davis.

But the turn the bike made was a wide one, and it was impossible to get into the proper lane of traffic. Instead, the bike wound up in the northbound traffic lane on Davis — and, horrifically, it wound up getting slammed by an oncoming minivan, sending the two bikers flying and twisting into the air and onto the ground.

Both who were on the bike, we’re told, escaped with their lives. What we saw, however, revealed a scene where it’s unfathomable to think no one was killed.

Whether it was how or where the hit happened or any other reasons, it was an absolute miracle both survived.

From the video, it appears neither bike driver, a 17-year-old boy nor the “passenger,” a 16-year-old girl, was wearing a helmet when they were hit June 28.

They were coming down the hill at what seemed like an alarmingly high rate of speed.

Several things occurred here that shouldn’t have.

First, two people were on one bike. We’re told most bikes are not made with brakes capable of proper stopping when two people are aboard.

The lack of helmets on the riders was quite alarming, too. And it comes as no surprise to some, including Melanie Ryan, of Kearny, who says it’s been her experience that most bikers — regardless of age — ride without helmets, even though they’re required of anyone 17 or younger and recommended for anyone of any age.

So what’ the bottom line here? Do as Kearny Police Chief George King suggested a few weeks ago: Treat riding a bike the same as you would driving a car (presume motorists won’t see you) and wear a helmet regardless of age. And parents, please don’t let your youngsters go out without head protection. The teens in the aforementioned case were very lucky to have survived. Let’s not chance being the next case where tragedy strikes and survival was never really a possibility.

Sept. 11 first responder Nystrom says ‘aye’ to Sept. 10 fireworks To the Editor: In recent weeks, we have seen in The Observer arguments over whether to have a fireworks event in Nutley so close the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. Here is my take on this.

The poet Robert Frost wrote: “In three words, I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: It goes on.”

Also in the same sort of context, fireworks are used to honor and celebrate, so why not have them on Sept. 10?

So many people have been looking forward to the event, from small children to the vendors who cater the event, as well as the small businesses that are counting on that revenue after such a tough year. So I say, “Let’s roll!”

HCPO doing much more than just prosecuting the offenders: These are their stories

L

ast spring, as the world was locked down for the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands here were out of work, and as countless families were facing food insecurity, a grass-roots initiative popped up throughout Hudson County — Community Refrigerators.

Local volunteers from Jersey City to Union City and beyond began operating community-based refrigerators where those in need could get free fresh fruits and vegetables, non-perishable food items, pantry goods, etc.

Community members and other organizations began donating to the refrigerators, but the need was great and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office saw there was a role the office could play in helping this initiative.

“We have an incredibly active community outreach program in our office, but when the lockdown went into place, we suddenly could no longer meet with the community face to face. However, that did not mean the need for assistance stopped — in fact, it was quite the opposite,” Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said. “One of the areas that we saw the greatest need was with providing access to food. Many residents were suffering loss of work and cost for food was skyrocketing during the pandemic.

Partnering with the local community groups on this important initiative has been incredibly humbling and rewarding. While we have been able to assist many families, we know there are many who are still in need.”

Initially, the HCPO connected several community fridges with New Jersey Farmers Against Hunger to provide a large donation of

fresh produce. Following that, and ongoing since last spring, the prosecutor’s office has facilitated weekly food pickups for four community refrigerators in Hudson County.

In 2020, with HCPO assistance, the four refrigerator sites obtained 950 boxes for a total of 26,600 meals.

In the first six months of 2021, they have received over 260 boxes for a grand total of more than 41,160 meals.

Food insecurity has been a problem facing communities throughout the United States — New Jersey notwithstanding — and the coronavirus pandemic has only worsened the problem. According to researchers at Northwestern University, food insecurity more than doubled as a result of the economic crisis caused by the pandemic, impacting approximately 23% of households in 2020.

A separate analysis by the Brookings Institute conducted during the summer of 2020, found that 27.5% of households with children were food insecure, or put another way, approximately 13.9 million children lived in food-insecure households.

“The Department of Health and Human Services is extremely grateful for the food security collaboration with the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Personnel and Law Enforcement officers during the COVID-19 pandemic and continued recovery efforts,” Nicole Harrison Garcia, deputy director of the Hudson County Department of Health and Human Services, said. “The HCPO has been instrumental in reaching local residents with vital food support to Hudson County families in need and extremely frail residents through their Community Refrigerator partnerships. Belleville folks sip some wine while painting

Special event also serves as fundraiser for township’s blooming Green Team

hey would have made the late Bob Ross proud, even if the paintings weren’t exactly molded in his style.

People laughed, ate, drank

and patiently painted an orange- and yellow-tinged tropical sun sinking into the sea and their colorful canvas sunsets will ultimately help with the rise of one of the newest township-wide groups dedicated to making Belleville greener and cleaner.

event was a fundraiser for Green Belleville Civic Association, a group formed last year committed to projects, outreach and education. It supports the township’s current Green Team, a group established by the mayor and council in 2019 to pursue environmental

This fundraiser will help offset some of the expenses realized by the Green Team, which works in concert with the township and the Sustainable Jersey program.

For instance, the money raised at the event could help buy a sign listing the usage rules at the recently unveiled Community Gardens in Fairway Park on Riverdale Avenue. Or, it could be used to purchase milkweed plants, which provide food for Monarch caterpillars throughout Belleville.

“We have a lot of projects in mind,” Gabrielle BennettMeany, the Green Team’s coordinator, said. “One thing we would like to do is purchase and install a compost bin. Along with the compost bin, we would like to create some workshop programming to show residents how compost can help grow plants in their own gardens.”

Earlier this year, state officials revealed Belleville had earned bronze certification from Sustainable Jersey. Belleville was one of 55 towns in New Jersey to attain the status for 2020 as “going green.”

The sip and paint event was hosted by local artist Athena Zhe, who is known for turning a large swath of concrete wall along the

Passaic River into a mural celebrating Belleville as “The Cherry Blossom Capital of America.”

Zhe guided budding artists step-by-step as they created their own versions of a tropical sunrise, complete with happy little palm trees and a hammock.

“I love to show others how to paint and create art,” she said. “I think the key is to be encouraging. Although the goal is for everyone to create a nice piece, this is also about having fun and raising money for a great cause.”

As each course was served and the wine glasses were refilled, the room at Brix filled with more and more joy.

“This was a great social event,” Kimberley France said as she added leaves to her palm trees. “Everyone is talking and laughing and having fun. That is the best part of this.”

And if one or two paintings aren’t exactly picture perfect, the Green Team notes the canvasses may always be recycled. Of course, no one made mistakes as the painted, just happy little accidents.

“This was a fun event for a great cause,” Councilman Vinny Cozzarelli, who was at the paint/sip soiree, said.

Kearny boys’ basketball camp attracts youngsters

Lot of promise at Lyndhurst girls’ hoops camp LYNDHURST - Dani

Nicolette is an 11-year-old girl who is headed into the sixth grade at the new Lyndhurst Middle School.

She recently enlisted at the Lyndhurst Recreation Girls’ Basketball camp, spearheaded by veteran coach Paul Passamano.

Nicolette was overjoyed to be one of the 50 or so young ladies to attend the camp that was held at the Lyndhurst Recreation Center.

“I like it a lot,” Nicolette said. “I like meeting new people and trying new things. I’ve been playing for about three or four years.

But this is great.”

The camp, the first of its kind in Lyndhurst, attracted a lot of experienced players and newcomers alike. It was definitely a breath of fresh air, considering that there was no activity at all last summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I had nothing to do last summer,” Nicolette said. “I just mostly stayed home.”

Lea Eglenowitz, a 9-yearold headed into the fourth grade at Roosevelt School, was in the same boat.

“I just stayed inside,” Eglenowitz said. “I did arts and crafts and stuff at home. But it was not as much fun as this was. This

was a lot of fun.”

Passamano has been coaching girls’ basketball for 34 years, including a three-year stint as the head coach at now-defunct Queen of Peace, was approached by the powersthat-be in the town to run a camp. Passamano wanted to insure that it was a girlsonly camp.

“I didn’t want to have a co-ed camp,” Passamano said. “I didn’t want to do anything except for a girls’ camp. In my mind, girls listen more.”

Passamano is the president of then Lyndhurst Recreation Girls’ basketball league and coaches the town’s travel team. He was excited with the turnout for the week-long camp.

“This is great,” Passamano said. “I try to find the weakest girls and make them dribble and pass. I know that girls get shy being at a boys’ camp. But here, they’re all equal. This gives me energy. I’m 68 years old and I get excited being here, because these girls give me energy. I love it. They show me that they want to learn the game. I know the parents all wish the girls could stay here for eight hours.”

KEARNY – Caleb Bonet is an 8-year-old Kearny resident who will enter the third grade at Hudson Charter School in a couple of weeks. He’s also a diehard Lakers fan whose favorite player is the late Kobe Bryant. Bonet also knows his basketball, so he was a little upset that there were no organized activities last year due to the pandemic.

“I didn’t do much,” Bonet said. “So I was kind of happy that there was a camp this year.”

The Kearny Boys’ Basketball Camp, under the guidance and leadership of Kearny High School head boys’ basketball coach Bill Mullins, welcomed more than 100 youngsters to Kearny High recently, much to the delight of the youngsters.

Logan Gonzales is a 10-year-old who will begin the fifth grade at Garfield School in the fall. Logan’s favorite team is the Boston Celtics, but his favorite player

is Magic Johnson.

Talk about these youngsters going old school.

“I just like the way he played,” Gonzales said of Magic Johnson. “He was a very good player.”

Yes, he was, but that was long before Logan was even born. It’s amazing how these young players chose players who played their last game way before these youngsters were on the planet.

Bernardo Toscano is a 9-year-old youngster who will enter the fourth grade at Franklin School in a few weeks.

“I learned how to play ‘Knockout,’” said Toscano, referring to the game where players continue to remain on the floor as long as they make shots. “I learned how to concentrate more. It really makes me want to play more.”

And that’s important for Bernardo because: “I want to be a pro player someday.”

“I think this is going to help me,” Toscano said. “I plan on training and practicing so I can get better in basketball.”

Samuel Manaios is an

11-year-old who will begin sixth grade at Franklin School. Samuel also learned how to play “Knockout” and loved it.

“That was a lot of fun,” Manaois said. “I’m so glad I came.”

Tiernan Devlin is an 11-year-old who will also enter the sixth grade at Franklin in the fall. He’s a fan of the Brooklyn Nets, but his favorite player? Let’s go old school again. Tiernan likes Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as his favorite.

“He was one of the most dominant players ever,” Devlin said of Abdul-Jabbar, the all-time leading scorer in the history of the NBA. But can Devlin make the Sky Hook, which was the patented main shot from AbdulJabbar?

“Well, not really,” Devlin said.

Devlin said that he learned how to make a proper layup at the camp.

“But now I can play basketball with my friends,” Devlin said.

Devlin is also a baseball and soccer player, but now has a new appreciation of hoops.

“I think I have it all figured out,” Devlin said.

“I had no idea,” Passamano said. “It’s July and a lot of people go on vacation.

Having it in July is tough.

So when I got 40, I was happy. More than that, I was excited. I want to do it every year, as long as my body and mind can continue. I would like to be here forever.”

Passamano said that he just loves working with girls.

“When I blow the whistle, everything stops,” Passamano said. “The girls know when they hear the whistle that it’s time to listen to instructions. I love it.”

“I liked this a lot,” Caswell said. “I learned how to make layups. I learned how to shoot better. It encourages me to play more. It really has helped my confidence.”

Aubrie Passamano said that she learned a little more about shooting the ball.

“I learned how to shoot at the right angle,” Aubrie said. “I learned how to shoot

layups. It really helped me a lot being here and makes me want to play more.”

“I want to do this every year, because I want to bring more notoriety to the girls,” Passamano said. “I want to build this up. I want to get their names out there. I want them to get equal attention to the boys.”

One of the unfortunate COVID-19 casualties last summer was National Night Out, but it makes its return to Kearny Tuesday, Aug. 3, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Belgrove Drive between Afton Street and Bergen Avenue.

Sgt. Adriano Marques, commander of the Kearny PD’s Community Oriented Policing Unit, says the KPD will square off against the Kearny Fire Department in a friendly game of softball.

departments, not playing in the game, will also be on hand, as will members of the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office and the Kearny PBA. The New Jersey State Police’s chopper will also make an appearance.

Balloons and ice cream will be available for the kids and a DJ will play music throughout the night.

Obituaries MICHAEL NAJUCH

Michael W. Najuch, 75, passed died Monday, June 21, 2021, at Clara Maas Medical Center, Belleville.

Michael was born in Kearny, where he remained a lifelong resident. His career as a mechanic at TWA/American Airlines spanned 40 years. He greatly enjoyed all sports, the outdoors and was a hunter and fisherman. Michael loved planting gardens and proudly sharing his harvests with his family.

Through the years, Michael made many local friends by assisting in renovating their homes.

Michael was the beloved husband of 49 years to the late Christina Najuch; devoted father of Diane Nunn and husband Laurence; loving son of the late Helene and Lewis Najuch; dear brother of Patricia McCormick and Ruth Najuch Dienemann and the late Stephen Najuch; cherished grandfather of Jake and Holly Nunn, as well as a fond uncle of numerous nieces and nephews.

Michael was a proud provider for his family with a big heart and smile to match and he will be greatly missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, Kearny, on Friday, July 30, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Luis Garcia, 56, of Kearny, died July 21, 2021.

He was always there to help people in need, especially those afflicted with addiction. Luis knew this was his true calling.

He spent many days feeding the homeless in New York City and New Jersey, handing out food and being there for them during their difficult times.

A beloved friend to many, Luis’ car club is planning a memorial drive and show in his honor.

The son of Emilia and the late Luis Garcia, Luis was the beloved husband to Cristina Fernandez; loving father of Sonia Garcia and Cristina Garcia, dear step-father of Samantha Almeida and Amanda Buchanan, cherished brother of Jorge Garcia and his wife Lisa and Rosa Crowley and her husband Scot. USDOJ launching strike forces to combat trafficked guns

T

he U.S. Department of Justice last week launched five crossjurisdictional strike forces to help reduce gun violence by disrupting illegal firearms trafficking in key regions across the country.

Leveraging existing resources, the regional strike forces will better ensure sustained and focused coordination across jurisdictions and help stem the supply of illegally trafficked firearms from source cities, through other communities, and into five key market regions: New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area/Sacramento Region and Washington, D.C., the DOJ says.

Each region will be led by designated

United States attorneys, who will collaborate with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and with state and local law enforcement partners within their own jurisdiction (where firearms are used in crimes) as well as law enforcement partners in areas where illegally trafficked guns originate.

These officials will use the latest data, evidence and intelligence from crime scenes to identify patterns, leads and potential suspects in violent gun crimes.

“All too often, guns found at crime scenes come from hundreds or even thousands of miles away. We are redoubling our efforts as ATF works with law enforcement to track the movement of illegal firearms used in violent crimes.

tions to help disrupt the worst gun trafficking corridors,” US Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, seen above, said.

“The Department of Justice will use all of its tools — enforcement, prevention, intervention and investment — to help ensure the safety of our communities (as) the department’s highest priority.”

According to gun-trace data, a significant number of firearms recovered in the New York/North Jersey area originate from outside the area. The new strike force will help ensure sustained and focused coordination between law enforcement and prosecutors in the area with their counterparts in other locations.

“Combatting violent crime has always been a top priority of this office,” Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig said.

“Because many of the firearm source locations for the New York City and northern New Jersey areas overlap with the source locations for firearms recovered in Washington, D.C., the New York and Washington area strike forces will work closely together.”

The DOJ says the strike forces represent one important, concrete step in implementing the department’s Comprehensive Violent Crime Reduction Strategy, which was announced May 26, 2021. The comprehensive strategy supports local communities in preventing, investigating and prosecuting gun violence and other violent crime — and requires U.S. Attorneys’ offices to work with federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement, as well as the communities they serve, to address the most significant drivers of violence in their districts. In guidance to federal agents and prosecutors as part of that comprehensive strategy, the deputy attorney general said firearms traffickers providing weapons to violent offenders are an enforcement priority across the country.

Report: Belleville’s water continues to be safe for drinking Authorities in Belleville say the drinking water continues to be safe to drink. Additionally, the township’s drinking water has lower lead levels and fewer traces of disinfection by-products, the latest water quality report reveals.

One of the reasons for the lower levels is because New-

ark — which supplies Belleville’s water — has changed to a new water operator, Township Engineer Thomas Herits said.

With the traces of disinfection by-products, Herits said Newark, like many other municipalities, uses chlorine to treat its water.

HAA5, a group of disinfection by-products, sometimes forms when chlorine used to treat water reacts with other naturally occurring chemicals in the water. According to a public-education notice distributed byhte township, there are no short-term health risks.

To have any long-term health risks, a person would have to drink eight, 8-ounce glasses of water every day for 70 years to have a one-in-amillion chance of having possible adverse effects related to HAA5.

Hertis said although it’s not reflected in the latest water

quality report, the township’s lead levels were again below state Department of Environmental Protection acceptable levels in the first quarter of 2021.

Both men were charged with burglary, conspiracy, theft and criminal mischief.

Scott was found to be the subject of a no-bail arrest warrant for a prior burglary charge out of Newark. Dunbar, meanwhile, was named in an Orange arrest warrant carrying $750 bail for a prior charge of theft.

Based on criminal justice reform procedures, Scott’s current charges were lodged on a warrant and he was transferred to the Hudson County Jail in South Kearny.

Dunbar’s current charges were lodged on a summons, after which he was turned over to the Orange Police Department to be held on that warrant.

Wuelfing were dispatched to Devon Street and Oakwood Avenue on a report two men and one woman had attempted to illegally enter parked vehicles and a residential garage. Officer Oliveira located the suspects at Midland Avenue and Elm Street after Officer Lopez broadcast their descriptions as given by a witness.

After further investigation, officers arrested 30-year-old Eric Carlen, 29-year-old Joseph Ferguson and 30-yearold Dana-Jenae Cooper, all of Kearny.

While searching Carlen, Officer Oliveira reportedly recovered from the man’s pants pocket four glass vials of crack cocaine, one Clonazfor weekly distribution in their communities. Officers Ryan Brady and Anthony Nunez were summoned to ShopRite where a manager alleged Calvin D. Jones, 25, of Newark, had stuffed his pants with $10.98 of Hanes socks. The manager allegedly confronted Jones at the store exit since he had not paid for the protruding package, but Jones was reportedly uncooperative.

The officers arrested Jones on a charge of shoplifting and he was later released on a summons.
