27.5% CRIME DIP PD sees monumental drop again under the leadership of Chief George King

here was this belief, starting, oh, around a year ago, that the lockdown instituted by the government might lead to a spike in instances of domestic violence.

And in some places, that’s exactly what happened.

But in Kearny, it didn’t.

Not even close. In fact, despite the pandemic and a myriad of other factors that have led to an increase in crime in many urban strongholds — one only needs to look east to New York City for the proof — the Town of Kearny continues to buck those trends.

In 2020, overall, the Kearny crime rate dropped a whopping 27.5% over 2019, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s an-

nual Uniform Crime Report.

Police Chief George King made the announcement Tuesday night, May 25, when the mayor and council got together for its bi-monthly meeting.

And it was sweet music to everyone gathered for the meeting, earning King and his department universal accolades for continuing to steer the ship properly and safely.

LOOKING BACK AT POST 99 AS IT

Editor’s note: The following story first appeared in The Observer in 2016. n Aug. 19, 1919 — 13 veterans of the Great War, as World War I was then known, gathered in the Kearny home of Fred E. Portz to organize a local chapter of the American Legion.

Along with Portz, those founding members were Alfred Feickert, Willis E. Wood, Dr. John F. Hanold, John Hanly, Asher I. Roberts, Charles Whitehead, Al Downing, Robert Downing, Dr. Edward H. Willan, George Winne, Roland M. Ellis and Alexander Brockway.

We list them all here because it was from this small group that emerged one of the strongest Legion chapters in the country, J.E. Frobisher Jr. Post 99.

who had been shot down over France in 1918.

The Post received a temporary charter in October 1919 and a permanent charter in May 1921.

The meetings were first at the Arlington Players Club (at the time located off Midland Avenue) and later at Town Hall, then the

Exempt Firemen’s Headquarters and then the Elks Lodge.

In 1923, Post 99 would stop bouncing around, its having acquired the Burroughs mansion on Midland Avenue, where the Kearny Post Office is now located. The real estate investment proved wise: The Legionnaires bought

the property for $15,000 and sold it in 1930 when they received an offer for more than twice that price.

For several years, they met in the Patterson Building on Kearny Avenue, and then they moved to the headquarters they still occupy, at 314 Belgrove Drive, across from what is now called Veterans Field.

That structure, by the way, had been the carriage house and stable for the Old Soldiers Home, which moved to Menlo Park after many decades in Kearny. Post members did the renovations — as, thanks to the efforts of former Commander the late Anthony Capitti, several years ago, they repaired and renovated the building that has been in continual use as a meeting hall/gathering place since 1936.

Post 99’s primary mission has always been to assist veterans.

Experience. They have many years serving Kearny, with little compensation for their work.

Public service, not self-service. They have not done this for personal gain.

Knowledge. They know how to do their jobs, how our town government is structured, and what the laws are.

Understanding. They understand the powers of their offices, and the limitations on those offices.

Fitness. Public officials should demonstrate good character, and should refrain from making false or baseless accusations against political opponents, or citizens who disagree with them.

Professionalism. Public officials should behave in a dignified and professional manner.

While we are proud to support our current Mayor and Council members, we share this message out of concern.

We have not seen these qualities from the opposing candidates, especially not the opposing mayoral candidate.

The opposing campaign has been one of division and grievance, with little or no regard for the truth.

We do not wish to see a return to the Kearny politics of the 1990s, which is what the opposing campaign looks like.

Please vote on June 8th for Alberto Santos for Mayor, and for Council members DeCastro, Konopka, Doyle and Ficeto.

In our opinion, they deserve re-election. More important, we the people of Kearny do not deserve the alternative.

CELEBRATES ITS 100TH B’DAY said, but he has hopes the younger vets will join.

“We’re trying to communicate with the new generation of veterans,” McMillan said, adding, “We are fortunate enough to be next door to the VFW and close to the Marine Corps League, and we’re starting to work more

together. …Each is unique, but we have a common understanding: We all served. And we have a common commitment — keeping the heritage and history alive and helping other veterans.”

In 2012, then Post 99 Auxiliary President Mary Alyn Fisher spearheaded

Frobisher’s foot locker, shipped home from France and donated to Post 99 by his family, holds photos, official papers, medals and mementos. the community. But at the height of its activities, between the wars and with an influx of veterans after World War II, it also sponsored student-essay and oratorical contests, a competitive drum and bugle corps and basketball, baseball, softball and bowling teams.

In the 1940s, it organized the Kearny Civilian Police Reserve force, which supplemented the KPD through 1946. And following World War II, it was instrumental in the development of veterans’ housing, including 25 homes built on Passaic Avenue. The program was so successful, and garnered so much attention, Post 99 received requests for advice from more than 200 localities nationwide.

You can also thank Post 99 for the existence of the veterans’ memorial park between Kearny Avenue and Beech Street, north of Quincy Avenue. The Legionnaires bought the land, donated it to the town and raised funds for the first monument, the towering World War I memorial, which was personally dedicated by Gen. John J. Pershing on May 27, 1922.

Now, lest you think your correspondent did massive research to collect all

this knowledge, she did not.

It comes courtesy of Fred E. Portz, the same gentleman who hosted that 1919 organizational meeting.

When he died in 1964, Portz was in the process of compiling and writing the Post 99 history. It was published posthumously by his widow, Jessie E. Portz, who noted she had it “printed unedited.” (You’d never guess. It looks pretty neat to our copyeditor’s eyes.) It was from this booklet that we harvested the information presented above.

Today, like many other veterans’ groups, American Legion Post 99 is dealing with diminishing membership, primarily due to the loss of the WWII generation.

But this is not discouraging current Post Commander Keith McMillan.

A lifelong Kearny resident, McMillan is an Air Force veteran who served three tours of duty in Kyrgyzstan, Iraq and Afghanistan. His father and grandfather were both Post members. He joined in 2004, and he is anxious to recruit new blood.

Cazares were dispatched to a Belgrove Drive location where a man called police reporting he wanted to turn himself in. Officers met Michael D. Barrow, 40, of Kearny, who had three Kearny warrants out for his arrest stemming from three alleged violations of restraining orders that occurred in 2020 and 2021.

The violations involved three instances where Barrow allegedly contacted the victim in violation of the court order.

Barrow was arrested and processed without incident.

He was turned over to the Hudson County Jail.

are participating in the “Click It or Ticket” campaign grant administered by the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety. The campaign promotes the use of seatbelts and is aimed at reducing traffic injuries and fatalities.

And, on May 24 at 8:39 a.m., Officer Sean Kelly, a participant in the campaign, was monitoring traffic on Grant Avenue. He observed Diego E. Vega-Navas, 33, of West Orange, driving a Dodge Durango while allegedly unseatbelted and holding a cellular phone in his hand.

Officer Kelly pulled over Vega-Navas on Belgrove Drive and learned the Durango was unregistered, his driver’s license was expired and suspended and he had no proof of auto insurance.

Officer Kelly arrested VegaNavas and issued him traffic tickets for driving with a suspended license, unlicensed driving, failure to surrender a suspended license, failure to wear a seatbelt, use of a handheld wireless device, unregistered vehicle and failure to possess an insurance card.

Vega-Navas was released after processing.

Important selfquestions to ask Primary Day ’21

n just a few days, on June 8, Democrats and, if they so desire, unaffiliated voters willing to declare themselves Dems, head to the polls for a primary in Kearny with a lot at stake. (Remember: Polls are open that day from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and most are voting in their regular voting locations — if you’re unsure, check your sample ballot that was mailed to you already.)

In the First, Third and Fourth wards, voters have two choices to make — their desired nominee for mayor and for the town council. In the Second Ward, officially, the choice is only for mayor, though Richard Konopka does remain on the ballot, unopposed, for a seat on the town council.

Before heading to the polls, it is vitally important to ask yourselves a few questions about the people on the ballot.

Does the person I want to vote for have the temperament required of holding municipal office? In other words, when things get rough — and they will — do they have the conviction to make tough decisions?

Does my candidate have the experience necessary to make such decisions — or will decisions be made on a whim?

How will my candidates’ decisions affect my children’s future? How will their decisions shape the future of safety in this comminity?

Will their choices force me to dig deeper once a quarter when my tax bills arrive?

Does my candidate have a background of investing their time in my community? Have they given of themselves as women and men for others?

Is my candidate in the habit of being transparent, always willing the truth, despite the potential consequences of doing so?

Has my candidate or will my candidate have the best interests of the town at heart, or will the candidate decide based on personal, selfish interests?

Remember, your decisions June 8 have massive consequences that will endure for the next four years. What you choose that early June day will have long-lasting effects on Kearny that will dictate the course in all of 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.

The years 2020 and 2021 have revealed just how unpredictable our world is. And how vital strong, decisive leadership really is, begging the question, “Who do I want being my leader during moments of unparalleled crisis?”

When you’re in the voting booth just before casting your votes June 8, ask yourself these questions one last time. Whose faces come to mind? (Don’t take too long, though.)

Before clicking that computer screen button, that vision, the people whose faces you see, should be — must be — crystal clear. Then click the submit vote button.

Numerous local boys graduate from the Prep Kearny’s Jablonski wins Browning, S.J., Award

umerous local boys were among the new alumni at St. Peter’s Preparatory School, Jersey City, which celebrated its 143rd Commencement at its outdoor athletic facility, Keenan Field, May 19, 2021.

Andrew Smith of Bayonne was the student speaker and Frederick Galano, director of financial aid and member of the religion department spoke for the faculty and staff.

Of the 226 graduates, these local residents were recognized, and their college destinations and honors are noted: Belleville: Sean Herold (Loyola University Maryland).

Kearny: Enrique Dager (Penn State University), Nathaniel Jablonski (Scholar Athlete, Cum Laude, College of the Holy Cross), Tyler McGeehan (University of Arizona), Ryan Mead (Penn State University), Iker Taboas (Scholar Athlete Award, Cum Laude, Rutgers University) and Dylan Treanor (Cum Laude, University of Connecticut).

Jablonski won a Gold Medal in Religion and was presented the Rev. John E. Browning, S.J. Award, given annually to a student who models the virtues of courage, wisdom and humble service in pursuit of justice.

Lyndhurst: Vincent Chirichella (Cum Laude, Rider University), Richard Lugo (Syracuse University) and Joseph Martins (Loyola University Maryland).

North Arlington: Aria Acosta (Montclair State University), Andrew Almeida (Seton Hall University), Christopher Green (Cum Laude, Rutgers University), Thomas Hurley (Sacred Heart University) and Maximillian Rueda (Scholar Athlete Award, Magna Cum Laude, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute).

Unearthing trolley history in North Arlington

North Arlington Mayor Daniel H. Pronti was in the right place at the right time as roadwork was being done on Ridge Road. As workers were doing their thing, he noticed the old trolley tracks that used to take the classic cars along Ridge then to Kearny Avenue and then Newark. Letter carrier, a Kearny resident, admits to discarding mail A U.S. Postal Service (USPS) mail carrier who lives in Kearny faces a year behind bars after he admitted last week he discarded mail, including 99 general election ballots sent from the Essex County Board of Elections to West Orange residents, from his assigned routes in Orange and West Orange, Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig announced.

Nicholas Beauchene, 26, of Kearny, pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge Cathy L. Waldor in Newark federal court to an information charging him with one count of desertion of mails.

According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court: Beauchene admitted that on Sept. 28, Oct. 1, and Oct. 2, 2020, he discarded into dumpsters in North Arlington and West Orange 1,875 pieces of mail he was assigned to deliver to postal customers in West Orange and Orange.

The mail reportedly found in North Arlington was in a dumpster adjacent to Arlington Pizza in the Food Town shopping plaza.

This mail included 627 pieces of first-class mail, 873 pieces of standard-class mail, two pieces of certified mail, 99 general election ballots for residents in West Orange and 276 campaign flyers from local candidates for West Orange Town Council and Board of Education.

Law enforcement recovered the mail Oct. 2 and Oct. 5, 2020, and placed it back into the mail stream for delivery.

The desertion of mail charge is punishable by a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 21, 2021.

Honig credited special agents of the USPS-Office of Inspector General, Northeast Area Field Office with the investigation.

Nutley girls just wanna have fun Sure, the Nutley High School softball team fell to Mount St. Dominic, 3-2, in the finals of the Essex County Tournament last week at Ivy Hill Park.

But don’t for a second feel sorry for the Maroon Raiders.

Despite what transpires in the final few regular season contests and then then NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group III state playoffs, which were slated to begin Tuesday with a home game against Mendham, veteran coach Luann Zullo’s bunch has accomplished one of their main goals.

“They’re having fun,” Zullo said. “They play the game not worrying about all the little things. They’re just having fun.”

With all apologies to Cyndi Lauper, the Maroon Raiders are having a blast this season. They are currently ranked No. 20 in the entire state with a 19-3 record. They’ve won their last two games by a combined score of 27-0 against teams like West Essex and Millburn that would have given the Maroon Raiders fits in the past. They will begin the state sectionals as the section’s No. 1 seed.

“If you would have told me before the season that we’d be 19-3 this year, I would have signed up for that,” the affable Zullo said.

Last week, before the Maroon Raiders faced Mount St. Dominic, the

state’s No. 2-ranked team, Zullo tried to give her team a history lesson.

“I tried to explain how important the county tournament was,” Zullo said.

“They did not seem fazed by it at all. I think I said that the next game is the biggest game and they are living up to that. I mean, four of our starters right now never played varsity softball before this year.

How can you explain it?”

One of the main reasons for the Maroon Raiders’ success is junior pitcher/ do-everything Fallyn Stoeckel, who was able to gain valuable experience as a freshman two years ago before the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out all of 2020.

Stoeckel has been nothing short of brilliant this year, striking out 136 batters in 131 innings, allowing just 20 earned runs on 86 hits, pitching to a 1.06 earned run average. She also leads the team with 26 hits and 22 RBI, batting .419 in the process. It’s one of the best all-around performances in Nutley softball history and there have been plenty of those over Zullo’s career.

“Fallyn has been incredible,” Zullo said. “Of course, pitching is so important in softball, but Fallyn does it all.”

Solid season for NA boys’ and girls’ track NA’s Vikings enjoy solid track championship season

By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com Anna Lasek knew that her track and field career was rapidly coming to a close. The North Arlington High School senior is attending Rutgers University in New Brunswick in the fall, so her days on the track were limited to her days as a Viking.

“I thought I would like to end senior year with a record,” Lasek said. “During practice, we were hitting far marks and I said, ‘Let’s make some noise.’

I was figuring out in my head what we had to do.”

The same for Jordyn Nelson, who is headed to Georgian Court in the fall to play soccer.

It was time for Nelson, who comes from a family of stellar Viking athletes over the years, to enjoy the last few days as a track and field competitor.

So as the Viking boy and girl participants moved toward the end of the outdoor track season, it was time to leave their mark.

Which they did.

Lasek won the gold medal in the discus at both the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference-Colonial & Meadowlands Division championships at Emerson Borough High School and the Jack Yockers Bergen County Championships at Hackensack High School.

At the NJIC meet, Lasek threw the discus a school-record 102 feet, seven inches and at the Bergen County meet, Lasek threw the discus 99 feet, nine inches. In the NJIC meet, Lasek’s distance was a good 20 feet ahead of the rest of the field.

ing the school record,” Lasek said. “It’s crazy how that happened.”

Combined with teammates Ivana Ramirez and Amelia Kearney, Lasek set a new school record the discus relay.

Nelson was part of the three relay teams that broke school records. Nelson was part of the triple jump relay, the long jump relay and the sprint medley relay.

They most certainly have left their mark before the NJSIAA state sectional meets this weekend.

“I’m so proud of them,” head girls’ coach Jessica Barber said. “They are all so supportive of each other.”

“I’m so happy,” Nelson said.

“I’ve wanted this for a long time.”

Nelson was one of the most productive performers at the county meet. She finished third in the long jump (15-9), third in the triple jump (32-4 ½) and fifth in the high jump (4-4).

The Vikings also received solid performances from a host of others. Brenna Sullivan was second in the 800-meter run at the county meet in 2:34.39, was

seventh in the triple jump and ninth in the long jump.

Arancha Antunues handled the hurdles races well, finishing fourth in both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles.

Also competing well were Ashleigh Chiang, who was eighth in the 200-meter run and 11th in the 100-meter dash, Alyssa Buccheri, who finished third in the pole vault, Camila Figueroa, who was 17th in the 200-meter run and Haley Rolon, who was 13th in the 400-meter run.

“They all did their part,” Barber said.

“Coach Barber did a great job of getting the team ready,” said North Arlington head boys’ track and field coach Joe Cioffi. “I am very proud of them. I’m very thankful to have her with our program.”

You see, Cioffi also girls’ volleyball, which had its season altered to this hybrid season from mid-February to April, which cut into the track and field season. So Barber was doing both track coaching jobs for the first few weeks of the season.

Arben Lolovic had a fine week, placing ninth in the 100-meter dash in 12:53 and 10th in the 200-meter run in 26.27. He was also seventh in the triple jump and eighth in the long jump, displaying immense versatility.

Skora was 12th in the 200-meter run, Jason Caputo was 10th and Martin Ramos 11th in the 1,600-meter run.

And the Vikings’ 4x400meter relay team finished an impressive third in 3:53.16.

“Over the last three weeks, we put up some good numbers,” Cioffi said. “I’m excited to see what the boys can do at the state sectionals.”

The North Jersey Group I state sectionals will take place at

Ridge High School.

“We’re one of three NJIC teams who are going to take the ride,” Cioffi said. “It’s a great complex. I think it’s going to be great to see the other teams.

We will have some boys qualify for the Groups (the Group I state championship meet in two weeks), but we’re not even looking that far.”

Other Viking performers include talented junior thrower Dylan McDermott (no, not the actor) who finished third in the shot put and ninth in the javelin.

“He was a sprinter who ran the 400 (meter run),” Cioffi said of McDermott. “He devoted his focus to work on his craft for throwing the shot.”

Nicolas Rodriguez was another solid thrower, finishing fifth in the discus and seventh in the shot put.

So while the Vikings might have surprised some with their recent outings, their coach isn’t one of them.

“I think we’re right on point,” Cioffi said. “We just need to take that final stride.”

Zullo likes the idea that the Maroon Raiders are not totally reliant on the middle of their lineup to produce runs.

“Every game it’s someone new that steps up and delivers,” Zullo said. “They all have really come up big.”

And there’s another trait about the Maroon Raiders that Zullo admires.

“My team never quits,” Zullo said. “They battle like no other team I’ve ever coached. They’re never out of it.”

Summer concerts are coming back to Nutley.

Bronchitis is an illness of the bronchi, the large passages that bring fresh air into the lungs. When a virus infects these passages, the airway can become inflamed and blocked with mucus. Often the viruses that spread their germs to the bronchi are the same viruses that cause a cold, the flu, or sinus infections. The initial illness develops into bronchitis.

Sometimes, however, bronchitis can be caused by a bacterial infection, which would require antibiotics to treat. Bronchitis can also be chronic, or long lasting, in which case it is likely caused by environmental irritants such as cigarette smoke. In the case of viral

The mayor also noted the KPD has effectively incorporated technology and cameras in monitoring key locations. The Kearny PD will also be joining departments across the state, effective June 1, employing body-worn cameras on most officers.

Following the announcement, King spoke with The Observer.

“Did the pandemic play a role? Sure, there’s a correlation,” King said. “But it’s much more than that. We had a tumultuous summer in 2020 following the death of George Floyd. Tempers were flaring. There were protests.

But our department didn’t hide — they did everything that was expected of them and more. We are ecstatic about these numbers.”

Under King, the Kearny Police Department maintains full staffing and hires new officers annually. The current total number of uniformed personnel is 105.

Currently, the department has eight vacancies — King says the KPD is in the process of accepting applicants.

While documenting the crash, Officer San Martin found Williams’ driver’s license was suspended.

Williams was arrested for the charge of driving with a suspended license and also ticketed for failure to surrender a suspended license.

He was later released.

On May 25 at 8:10 p.m., Officer Derek Hemphill was patrolling outside the Walmart on Harrison Avenue and a random license-plate check on his in-car computer alerted him the owner of a 2001 Toyota Camry in front of him had a suspended license.

Officer Hemphill pulled over the Camry in the Walmart lot, finding driver Marquis C. Chatmon, 23, of Newark, also did not have proof of auto insurance.

Chatmon was then arrested. Officer Hemphill summonsed him for driving with a suspended license, failure to surrender a suspended license and failure to possess an

insurance card.

Chatmon was later released.

On May 26 at 6:50 a.m., Officer Anthony Oliveira was patrolling near 350 Belleville Turnpike as a participant in the “Click It or Ticket” campaign. Franklin E. Quizhpi, 27, of Belleville, apparently was seatbelted but was missing his front license plate.

His rear license plate was not on file with the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission.

Quizhpi was stopped by Oliveira and could not produce the triumvirate of driving credentials: license, registration and insurance card.

Motor Vehicle Commission database checks revealed Quizhpi’s license was expired and suspended. His Acura TL was supposed to bear different license plates than the one currently affixed — the original plates being expired.

Officer Oliveira arrested Quizhpi on a charge of driving with a suspended license. He also issued tickets for failure to possess an insurance card, unregistered vehicle, improper display of license plates and fictitious plates.

Quizhpi was then released from the police station.

Arrest made in Clinton Ave. burglary, KPD says Suspect, 17 at time of crime, already behind bars

he Kearny Police Department has made an arrest in a brazen, nighttime, Jan. 15, 2021, burglary that took place on Clinton Avenue, Capt.

Timothy Wagner, the public-information officer of the Kearny PD said last week.

Det. John Fabula, who investigated the crime, charged a Bayonne man, now 18, who was 17 at the time of the offense, with burglary in violation of 2C:18-2a(1), and theft in violation of 2C:20-3a, both juvenile-delinquency complaints.

The man, whose name cannot be

released since he was charged as a juvenile, was already incarcerated in the Hudson County Jail in South Kearny on an unrelated matter, so he will remain there, Wagner said.

The defendant was one of two people arrested in the victim’s stolen Infiniti G35 by New York State Police in Brewster, New York, on Jan. 16, Wagner said.

He said the current burglary and theft charges were not filed until forensic and digital evidence unique to the burglary scene was processed and established probable cause that the man was a suspect in the Clinton Avenue case (and not just a guy who ended up in the victim’s car after the fact.)
