Lyndhurst ‘Unity Team’ wins all 5 seats in election

t was, at times, a contentious election. It seemed it might even be a squeaker. But in the end, it was a complete and utter blowout for the Lyndhurst Unity Team, led by Mayor Robert B. Giangeruso, which had a “clean sweep” of the Clean Sweep ticket, led by town gadfly David Sivella.

The Unity ticket won all five seats in the May 11, 2021, election for the Lyndhurst Board of Commissioners, with Giangeruso garnering the most votes. In vote order,

KPD: MAN, 20, JAILED AFTER 11-MONTH CHILD-PORN INQUIRY

A

20-year-old man has been arrested by the Kearny Police Department following an 11-month-long investigation into his alleged use of child pornography, Kearny Police

Chief George King announced last week.

The arrest of Justin T. Davidson, 20, of Kearny, came as the culmination of a nearly year-long inquiry by the Kearny PD’s Detective Bureau that was opened in early June 2020, based on numerous public social media posts alleging

several local residents had been subjected to harassing or sexually objectionable behavior by “a certain Kearny man,” the police said.

The investigation, King said, reportedly uncovered many instances where Davidson is alleged to have contacted victims via social media platforms

Instagram and Snapchat and arranged to receive sexually explicit images of them.

Following the 11-month investigation, on May 12, 2021, warrants were issued charging Davidson with the following crimes:

It was off to the races for the Harrison PTSO Sunday afternoon

It was a perfect day Sunday, May 16, for the Harrison Parent Teacher Student Organization’s 5K to benefit the students of Harrison High School who will go off to college and other studies in the future.

The PTSO, along with Harrison High School Vice Principal Steve Lipski and Councilwoman Ellen Mendoza combined to organize the event. Women of distinction honored

by Belleville’s Mayor & Council

Female heroes come in all shapes and sizes and walks of life.

And, nine of them were recently honored when Belleville hosted its Women’s Day celebration.

Councilwoman Naomy De Peña hosted the event, which celebrated women who embody the spirit of empowerment, whether demonstrating leadership, overcoming obstacles, instilling change, excelling in service and improving our community.

Then, they were recognized at a township council meeting.

Carla Penelope Veras was chosen as “Belleville’s Spirit of Empowerment” in a resolution

read at that meeting.

According to the resolution, the Belleville resident began her career with Enterprise Rent-A-Car before working her way up to heading the largest partnership for a new division with Uber. She now oversees the operation of National, Alamo and Enterprise brands at Newark Liberty International Airport.

“What’s special about Carla is what’s special about so many women,” DePeña said. “She is a determined, focused, force of nature in her career and a loving, nurturing soul at home.

She and her fiancé purchased a two-family home here in Belleville, which they share with her parents and grandparents.”

Passenger took ride & Uber driver’s purse, KPD says

On the morning of May 13, an Uber driver contacted police reporting a rider stole her purse from inside her car.

Officers Kevin Carvalho, Kyle Plaugic and Det. Mike Farinola investigated and learned the 35-year-old driver picked up Beatriz Solorzano Torres, 38, at her Ogden Avenue home.

She dropped Torres off on Patterson Street, after which the driver realized her purse was missing.

A camera inside the Uber vehicle had video-recorded the trip. The footage showed Torres take the purse before exiting at her stop. The officers tracked down Torres, who was by this time back at her home.

They recovered the stolen purse and arrested Torres,

man at Seeley Avenue and Argyle Place. There, they found Sava Boric, 44, of Kearny, dancing in the middle of the street. When asked to dance away from the street, Boric allegedly asked to be left alone because he was enjoying the rain.

Eventually, Boric was coaxed out of traffic’s path, but by this time officers had discovered that he was wanted by Newark Court on arrest warrants for disorderly conduct ($300 bail) and a city ordinance violation ($50 bail).

Boric was arrested and charged by summons with obstructing highways and public passages. He was later released on his own recognizance by Newark authorities.

On May 10 at 3 p.m., Officers Luis Moran and Jose Resua assisted a disabled motorist on the Pulaski Skyway.

While awaiting a tow for the stalled 2000 Honda Civic, the officers learned its license plates were listed as having been surrendered to the New York State DMV. Moreover, they had previously been associated with a 1997 Saab, rather than this Honda.

Driver Roche O. Landolf, 34, of Roselle, told police his license was suspended and he had bought this car from a private seller a week earlier.

Landolf was wanted by Roselle Park Court on two arrest warrants for drug possession ($1,750 and $2,250 bail respectively).

Landolf was arrested and charged on summonses with driving with a suspended license, fictitious plates, and operating an unregistered and uninsured vehicle. He was later released on his own recognizance by Roselle Park authorities.

On May 13 at 9:54 p.m., Officers Ryan Wilson and Ruben Rivera were summoned to the Bloomfield Police Department where Larry Clemons, 59, of New York City, was being held on a Kearny arrest warrant. The warrant stemmed from a January 2020 case in which it was alleged Clemons stole $149.21 of soap and deodorant from the nowclosed Kearny Kmart and fled from the store’s loss-prevention associate.

Clemons was found to also have been wanted by Newark, Bloomfield and Garfield, but all those jurisdictions released him on his own recognizance.

Clemons was processed on his Kearny warrant and booked into the Hudson County Jail, South Kearny.

On May 14 at 3:26 p.m., Donald G. Kubs III, 38, of Kearny, strolled into police headquarters with a fist full of hundreds and the intention of satisfying an outstanding arrest warrant. Officers Luis Cazares and John Donovan executed the warrant, which was issued by Pohatcong Court for a shoplifting offense.

The warrant carried $1,000 bail. Kubs was processed and released with a new court date.

Corpus Christi procession returning

The Catholic Feast of Corpus Christi will be celebrated at St. Stephen’s Church in Kearny Sunday, June 6, with a street procession with the Blessed Sacrament (Holy Eucharist or consecrated host) immediately following the noon Mass.

The procession will move from the front of the church on Kearny Avenue, down Laurel Avenue, turning right onto Chestnut Street, proceeding to the corner of Chestnut Street and Columbia Avenue, turning right, proceeding to Kearny Avenue, turning right onto Washington Avenue and making a left onto Argyle Place, turning left onto Laurel Avenue and returning to the St. Stephen’s Church.

Approximately 50 to 100 people will participate in the procession.

Face masks and social distancing will be observed.

“A procession of the Blessed Sacrament involves a priest carrying the consecrated Host in a special container called a Monstrance,” Deacon Earl White, of St. Stephen’s parish, said. “The parishioners of St. Stephen’s and others have been invited to follow behind singing hymns and praying together in a public witness of our faith in Jesus Christ’s presence with us. It is also an opportunity for us to pray for the local community and its needs.”

A few words about Lupus

ay is Lupus Awareness Month and locally, the Town of Kearny lights up Town Hall purple nightly during the month – the color chosen to represent the affliction — to remind residents. But just what is Lupus?

According to the Lupus Foundation of America, Lupus is a chronic (long term) autoimmune disease that may cause pain in any part of the body. As an autoimmune disease, it “attacks healthy tissue in the body.”

It mostly affects the skin, joints and internal organs, the foundation says, but it goes well beyond those body parts. Shockingly, 9 of 10 people who suffer from Lupus are women. It develops mostly in women 15 to 44, but has a much higher incidence in the Black, AsianAmerican, Latino, Native-American and Pacific-Islander communities.

Other statistics, the Lupus Foundation says, include: • Around 1.5 million Americans and 5 million worldwide suffer from Lupus.

• The symptoms of the disease are wide-ranging.

According to the LFA, “people with lupus can experience significant symptoms, such as pain, extreme fatigue, hair loss, cognitive issues and physical impairments that affect every facet of their lives. Many suffer from cardiovascular disease, strokes, disfiguring rashes and painful joints. For others, there may be no visible symptoms.”

• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate 16,000 new cases of Lupus develop each year and 1 in 3 with it also suffer from one or more other autoimmune diseases.

• Of all, the worst statistic is that there is no cure. And, 10 to 15% of all who have it will die prematurely.

There are four types of Lupus: Systemic, which primarily affects internal organs; Cutaneous, which primary affects the skin; Drug-induced, which is brought on by high doses of certain meds; and Neonatal, which is caused, in-utero, by antibodies in the mother. It is estimated the cost to care for Lupus, annually, averages around $34,000.

Lupus is a disease many have heard of but likely know little about, unless one knows someone personally who has it. So as we continue through Lupus Awareness Month, it is our hope this small piece might be enlightening — and we certainly urge everyone to take time to learn even more.

To my Kearny Friends and Neighbors:

or over 50 years now, I have carried on a love affair with the Town of Kearny.

I love everything about my hometown and because I do, I want the town to be in the hands of people who are knowledgeable, innovative, experienced and transparent.

Our town, like all American communities, is dealing with the aftermath of a vicious and costly pandemic. There will be unprecedented challenges as we find our way back. As the federal government formulates various economic paths to recovery, we need someone at the helm who is familiar with the application and utilization of grant funding; someone who is familiar with environmental and infrastructure issues; someone who is familiar with public-health protocol; someone who is familiar with municipal redevelopment; someone who is familiar with all functions of government. This is no time for “on the job training.” We need someone who is experienced and has built useful political and governmental networks.

We need Alberto G. Santos!

Al Santos and I have been friends and colleagues for 22 years. We have not always agreed on everything, but I have never once questioned his honesty or his devotion to our town. Not only is Mayor Santos an intelligent, insightful man of unquestionable integrity, he has a talent for surrounding himself with like-minded people. His running mates: • Marytrine DeCastro (First Ward) • Richard Konopka (Second Ward) • Carol Jean Doyle (Third Ward) • Gerald Ficeto (Fourth Ward) All bring a specific set of skills to their positions and all have distinguished themselves as public servants.

Detectives arrested Davidson on May 12 without incident at his job in Glen Rock, where he is believed to be an auto mechanic, police said.

He was remanded to the Hudson County Correctional Center, South Kearny, pending his first court appearance.

The record is deceiving with NA softball

There’s no question that the cancellation of the 2020 spring scholastic sports season had an effect on every single team in the area.

But perhaps there wasn’t a team that was hurt more than the North Arlington High School softball team.

That’s because the Vikings’ freshmen crop never got the chance to play at all.

“We are very young,” NA head softball coach Danielle Cibelli said. “But our sophomores are really freshmen again, because they didn’t play last year.

Some of these girls had never stepped onto a high school field before.”

And then the Vikings had to endure a preseason that lasted only two weeks prior to the start of the 2021 campaign.

“With a limited preseason, we didn’t know who was going to play where,” Cibelli said. “We were basically teaching on the fly.”

So needless to say, the Vikings struggled a little bit to start the season, dropping their first five games, some by lopsided scores.

“But the interest was always there,” Cibelli said.

“They all get along well together and that’s a bonus.

You can see it, not so much with wins and losses. But just the little things that they get accomplished.”

After the five losses, the win came – and it was a doozy.

The Vikings defeated

Snyder in a barnburner to say the least, coming away with a 28-25 win that sounds much more like a football score than a softball outcome.

“They’ve started to jell as a team and that helps a lot,” Cibelli said.

So does game experience.

Since the win, the Vikings have won two more times and have played tremendously better. The Vikings knocked off St. Mary’s of Rutherford by a 22-2 margin and a day later, they defeated Paterson Charter, 11-0, in a game where junior pitcher Maira Gutierrez pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out seven.

“We’ve been varying the pitchers,” Cibelli said. “We have three on our staff, but Maira has stepped up lately. She throws the heat.”

Sophomore Shaelyn Males and freshman Jaylene Joza are also pitchers, but Gutierrez seems to be getting most of the work these days, especially after two stellar performances against Wood-Ridge.

The catcher has the same last name as the catcher on the North Arlington baseball team. That’s because they are brother and sister.

Tony Alho is the standout catcher for the Vikings’ baseball team and younger sister Grace, a sophomore, is the catcher on the softball team.

By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com From the minute Jaylene Rivera rounded third and made the turn for home in a Lyndhurst High School softball game in 2019, she knew something was very wrong with “I felt it pop,” said Rivera, a freshman at the time. “I went down. It didn’t hurt at first, but I then couldn’t put any pressure on it. I thought at first it was just a little sprain.”

But a few days after the injury, the swelling didn’t subside and Rivera went for a MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) test that provided the three initials that every single athlete dreads hearing – ACL. “It was scary,” Rivera said.

“Hearing those words, I just thought everything was over.

I knew I was a freshman and I had a lot of time.”

Lyndhurst head softball coach Sara Fusco was an assistant at the time of Rivera’s unfortunate injury.

“It was sad,” Fusco said.

“She had so much potential.

You always get a little concerned when you see something like that.”

Rivera’s torn anterior cruciate ligament required reconstructive surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. She suffered the injury in May, but didn’t have the surgery until early June.

“I knew that there were a lot of athletes who made the comeback, but it was still scary,” Rivera said. “It was comforting to see the pictures of all the athletes on the wall.”

While she professes to not being a big football fan coming from a family of New York Jets fans, Rivera saw all of the famous New York Giants players that adorn the walls of the Hospital for Special Surgery.

“I just knew I had to get back on the field,” Rivera said.

“I need to get back and I need to play again.”

Rivera said that she began physical therapy as soon as possible after the surgery at Excel Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy in East

Rutherford.

“My brother (Jose, a former football and baseball player at St. Joseph’s Regional in Montvale) went there, so I figured it was a good place to go,” Rivera said.

Thus began the comeback of Jaylene Rivera.

“I started in (therapy) in June and got cleared in December,” Rivera said.

“She’s not as vocal as others, but she leads by example,” Fusco said. “She works hard and plays hard, every single at-bat. That’s why she’s a captain. She always does the right thing.”

Lately, the junior third baseman has been doing more than just the right thing. She’s been tearing the cover off the softball.

Rivera had three hits, including a double and a home run, and drove in five runs in a win over Harrison, then followed it up with two hits, namely a double and a homer, and three RBI in a win over New Milford. She also drew three walks and scored two runs against Bergen Charter, extending the Golden Bears’ current win streak to 10 straight.

For her efforts, Rivera has

been selected as The Observer Athlete of the Week for the past week.

And that honor marks a first here at the Observer. In the 20plus years of choosing athletes for the weekly feature here during the scholastic sports seasons, there had never been two athletes from the same team to be selected in consecutive weeks.

Until now.

Rivera joins her friend and teammate Todzuman as backto-back recipients of the honor.

Todzuman, the Golden Bears’ pitcher, earned the honor last week after pitching a perfect game among her achievements. Is there any wonder why the Golden Bears are rolling along with 10 straight wins?

Rivera, who is batting .475 with five homers and 19 RBI, is seeing the ball very well these days.

“The ball looks like beach ball right now,” Rivera said.

“I’m so happy I’m doing so well. It looks so huge coming in. In the beginning of the season, I might have been a little

Fusco always had faith.

“I knew it was going to happen,” Fusco said. “She’s such a great kid. She’s super smart and has a ton of AP (advanced placement) classes. She’s just a well rounded individual. I’m super excited about the way she’s playing.”

Rivera is also a slick fielding third baseman, so she is well rounded.

Fusco was asked what it meant to have two straight Athlete of the Weeks.

“Watch out,” Fusco laughed.

“I’m very proud of my girls.

They’re awesome.”

Just like Todzuman, Rivera has hopes of playing softball in college.

“It is a goal for me,” Rivera said. “Between my injury and COVID, it got messed up a little bit. But I hope to find a good school.”

And life is a lot better these days.

“That’s 100 percent better,” Rivera said.

Junior Viviana DaSilva is the Vikings’ second baseman.

“She’s one of our most unsung players,” Cibelli said of DaSilva, who had two hits and four RBI in the win over Snyder. “She does her job well.

She’s also very quick.”

Junior Emma Pegales is the team’s shortstop.

“She’s probably our most versatile player,” Cibelli said of Pegales. “She’s also our backup catcher. We moved her from second base to shortstop. Her aggressiveness and attentiveness to the game helps everyone. Her game is

“She’s like a sponge, soak-

ing up all we can teach her,” Cibelli said. “She absorbs all the information to get better.

She’s becoming a great hitter.

She also has a great arm. She’s already comfortable with the leadership role.”

Gomez had two hits, five runs and two RBI against Snyder and had four hits and four RBI against Paterson Charter. Gomez is batting .473 with one homer, 12 RBI and 13 stolen bases. She’s a player to watch.

“She was originally the first baseman, but we put her in right field and found a spot there,” Cibelli said.

Katheryn Torres and Kaitlyn Molina are two other seniors who get playing time.

“They’re starting to feel more comfortable,” Cibelli said. “It took a couple of games, but once we got going, we’re doing better. One thing about this team is that they never give up.”

It’s a positive start, for sure.

The Observer spoke with Giangeruso the morning after the election. He was elated and optimistic about his team’s victory and what lies ahead in the next four years.

“It was a tough election, at times, intense,” Giangeruso said. “But I am very humbled by the trust the people of Lyndhurst put in me and our entire team. We’ve done some great things already and in the next few years, we will continue to do the same. I cannot thank the people of Lyndhurst enough for what they’ve said by sending us back.”

We asked Giangeruso, entering his fifth term as a commissioner (he was first elected in 2005 and then again in 2009, 2013, 2017 and now 2021) and third as mayor (he

became mayor in 2013, following former Mayor Richard DiLascio’s decision not to seek re-election that year), to comment on his main challenger, Sivella, and whether he believed this election spelled the end of his ire.

“We certainly hope so,” Giangeruso said.

Giangeruso has oft been the target of Sivella’s vitriol on a website the man runs. However, just about an hour after the election results were announced on Election Day, that site was completely shut down, as was the Facebook page for the entire Clean Sweep ticket.

Sivella, meanwhile, could not be reached for comment. He did, nonetheless, comment for another media outlet, where he said: “We respect Lyndhurst voters and their decision for the direction they want for their town.”

Mae Aitken Young died with her children at her side April 22, 2021.

She was 93.

Mae was born Feb. 2, 1928, to James Dixon and Elizabeth Wiebe Aitken at their home in Kearny. She lived in Kearny all her life until marrying Robert McKenzie Young on March 19, 1949. Mae was employed by Bell Telephone for many years and then by AT&T until her retirement.

Click it or Ticket returns Law enforcement officers from around the state — including the Kearny and Lyndhurst police departments, will join police around the country in cracking down on unbuckled motorists and passengers as part of the national “Click it or Ticket” campaign.

Beginning May 24 and running through June 6, the annual “Click It or Ticket” national mobilization utilizes high visibility seat belt checkpoints and saturation patrols, in combination with local and national publicity efforts, to reiterate the life-saving value of seat belts.

In New Jersey, a key focus of this year’s campaign is to promote seat belt usage by adults in all seating

positions in the vehicle, both front and rear seats.

Front seat belt usage rate in New Jersey currently stands at 90.23%.

However, adults riding in rear seats are buckling up at a significantly lower rate, only 48%, according to the most recent surveys.

The 2020 Click It or Ticket mobilization was cancelled due to the Covid public health emergency.

During the 2019 campaign, 343 New Jersey police agencies participated in the two-week initiative.

As a result of the effort, law enforcement officers issued 14,548 seat belt citations, 5,670 speeding summonses and made 858 impaired-driving arrests.
