Massive flood shuts down Polito Avenue, Lyndhurst, for days

Auteri, the public-information officer of the Lyndhurst Police Department, told The Observer.

Following significant rain -which happened two weeks ago -- Auteri says the water generally “recedes quickly,” but it appeared the rainwaters didn’t this go-round.

Unit 305 restocks food pantry shelves at St. Stephen’s

s the weather turns chilly and windy, Scouts and leaders from Unit 305 go “Scouting for Food” annually to restock the shelves of the food pantry

at St. Stephen’s Church in Kearny. Despite the pandemic, or perhaps because of it, parishioners at each of the weekend Masses donated above and beyond this year’s goal of 1,700 items, with a total contribution — including cash donations — of 2,206 non-perishable food items,

the highest amount collected to date.

Providing community service is at the core of scouting where scouts are encouraged to “Do a Good Turn Daily.”

For Unit 305, this is not just a slogan, but a call to action.

During the weekend of Oct. 24, Scouts distributed yellow “Scouting for Food” bags after all five Masses at St. Stephen’s along with a suggested shopping list of items most needed. Over the Halloween weekend, Scouts collected the bags filled with non-perishable food for the pantry before each Mass.

Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and leaders volunteered 86 hours to gather the items, sort them into categories, reorganize the shelves and restock the food pantry with the donated goods.

St. Stephen’s Church, sponsor of Unit 305, hosts its food pantry year-round and works with the Kearny

Food Pantry Network administered by volunteers from the First Presbyterian Church. Donations may continue to be made at any Mass and dropped off in the large plastic bins located inside St. Stephen’s vestibule.

Kearny Scouts remain active while following safety protocols during service projects, outdoor troop/pack meetings, daytime hiking excursions and overnight camping.

Youngest candidate ever wins seat on Belleville Ed Board

A

Belleville Board of Education member who police say was charged with drunken driving last month was sent back to the board by the township’s voters on Election Day, Nov. 3, as was an insurgent teenage candidate who becomes the youngest elected official in Belleville’s history, figures from the Essex County Clerk’s Office reveal.

Erick Jacho finished second in a race for two seats with a total of 3,321 votes.

Frank Velez, a teenager, was the top vote-getter with 3,747 votes.

Velez ran unsuccessfully in May for a seat on Belleville’s Town Council in the Second Ward. At the time, he caused

a lot of buzz. He clearly did the same in his campaign for the school board. Following his resounding win last week, he took to Facebook to address Belleville residents.

“Before anything, I would like to thank everyone for the unbelievable enthusiasm and support this campaign and myself have received since I announced my run in August: my family, friends and supporters — you all have been the fuel to my fire and I will always be grateful,” Velez said.” With that said, last night we received the earlyto-mid vote of all ballots cast at this General Election for Belleville. “ … If the current votetrend continues, I will not only win election to the Board of Education, but also become the highest vote-get-

Meanwhile, in a race for North Arlington Borough Council, Republican incumbents Donna Bocchino and Mario L. Karcic Jr. fended off challenges from Democrats John Yampaglia and Thomas Bradley. Bocchino led with 3,931 votes and Karcic had 3,827 votes. Yampaglia had 3,313 votes and Bradley, 3,273 votes. The top two vote-getters won the seats.

Glazjewski finished fourth in a race where the top three vote getters won seats.

In East Newark, running unopposed, both Hans Peter Lucas and Jeanne Zincavage, will return to new terms on the Borough Council.

In the race for President of the United States, voters in the three counties The Observer covers resoundingly cast their choices for President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. In Hudson, Biden received 150,534 votes (74%) to President Donald J. Trump’s 49,554 votes (24%).

In Bergen County, Biden had 259,358 votes (58%) to Trump’s 182,831 votes (41%).

And in Essex County, Biden scored 224,615 votes (77%) to Trump’s 63,971 votes (22%).

All vote totals listed here are still considered unofficial.

Dramatic news coverage of viral outbreaks and pandemics may be an opportunity for scammers to pump inaccurate information into the marketplace to try to manipulate markets and investors. Following these hints can help you keep

your money and personal information safe: 1. Ask and Check. Before you make any investment decision, ask and check to verify information about any individuals you are dealing with and any investment product you are considering. You can use FINRA BrokerCheck, a free online tool, to get information on brokers and investment advisers.

2. Be skeptical. If an unknown company becomes the subject of press releases, emails and promotional materials hyping the company and its products to cure the latest pandemic, hit pause.

Be wary if you are flooded with information over a short time, especially if the communications only focus on the upside with little or no mention of risk.

37 years ago, ‘Karate Kid’ made Harrison street part of Newark

T

he Netflix hit show “Cobra Kai” has been in the forefront of discussions on TV, the radio and just about everywhere these days. The show, which started as a YouTube original before migrating to Netflix, picks up 35 years after “The Karate Kid” movie that starred Ralph Macchio.

If you’re a fan of the original movie series, you’re absolutely going to love the trials and tribulations of Daniel-san LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, whose face he kicked inside out at the end of the first film, in the new “Cobra Kai.” The show picks up with LaRusso owning a bunch of luxury car dealerships in southern California and Lawrence … let’s just say in a not-so-fortunate point in his life.

We’ll get back to “Cobra Kai” in a

bit, but before we do, we wanted to offer a little, rarely-known connection the Town of Harrison has with the original Karate Kid. In the movie, the very first scene, filmed in 1983, is one that is quite familiar to anyone from Jersey. It’s a wide view of the Western Spur of the NJ Turnpike, then the Stickle Bridge on Rt. 280. But, we’re then taken on a journey to what the movie says is the LaRusso neighborhood — in downtown Newark.

The only thing is — thanks to the joy of cinematography — the scene was not really shot in Newark. Instead, it’s Franklin Avenue in Harrison — and if you’ve ever been on Franklin before, you can’t miss it.

A lot of that neighborhood has changed, most notably the old factories that once stood on Hamilton See COBRA, Page 15

In thanks to every veteran who ever put on the uniform

I

t is absolutely mind boggling to think that every single member of the United States Military is there by choice.

In the past, it was a mix of those who wanted to be in the military with others who were there because of a draft.

But with the draft no longer an issue, there isn’t a single woman or man fighting for this country who isn’t doing so by choice.

And what an amazing thing that is — that everyone who fights so that we might be free — does so on their own accord.

And so it is with great ease, this Nov. 11, in a year filled with so much unknown — so much we’re not used to at all — that we pause to say thank you to each and every veteran who has put on a uniform to fight for our country and for our freedom.

Those of us who have never served could ever begin to imagine the sacrifices made, on a daily basis, by all who have served this nation militarily. But we know those sacrifices are real, they are made by free will and without reservation and the are made so we don’t have to.

Is there a greater gift given to this country than that of the women and men who serve?

Is there a greater sacrifice a human being could make other than to say, “I will put myself in harm’s way for my fellow woman and man?”

Is there anything greater than what a veteran does (or an actively-serving military person does)?

On this Veterans Day, we say thank you to all the living veterans of our nation’s military. And though this day is for those no longer serving, we say thank you to all who are serving. We are grateful for the many sacrifices you all make for our country. And yet somehow, saying “thank you” hardly seems enough.

Miller: ‘Chemtrails’ are making Harrison filthy and it has got to stop immediately To the Editor: I was appalled by the recent light rain that left everything in Harrison covered in a filthy brown dust. Certainly, many of your readers also observed this dust. The rain deposited this pollution. It did not come from jet planes from Newark airport — flights have been greatly reduced due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The dust, instead, came from unmarked jet planes spraying a slurry of coal ash mixed with aluminum powder as part of the military weather control program. I find this reprehensible.

Therefore, I invite your readers to comment on this phenomenon, give their opinions and voice their objection to being sprayed by this harmful filth.

Readers may Google the search terms “chemtrails” and “geoengineering” to learn more.

But don’t be fooled by the search results. We have been sprayed. It is not a conspiracy theory — it is a highly secretive military program that is widespread in the USA with many observations of these jets spraying dust that spreads out over the whole sky, causing dirty rain.

The flight plans of these jets are not even registered with the Federal Aviation Administration. I hereby denounce this weapons program and demand that the experimental testing over American cities be stopped as soon as possible.

Reed: I loved the Eddie Pop uniform shirt story, but my last name has two ‘e’s in it To the Editor: I enjoyed reading The Observer newspaper of Sept. 16, 2020. The story of Edward Poplaski’s Kearny Police uniform top found in Scotland.

I was on the KPD with Eddie for many years and we became friends. He was the type of guy who would give you the jacket or shirt off his back. Perhaps this is how part of his uniform ended up in a Scotland thrift shop.

I also enjoyed learning that I was the longest living retired KPD member and that Eddie was

Potsie and others to appear on Applause Radio Show

N

ovember has many events we commemorate, celebrate, recall. There’s Daylight Saving Time, Election Day, Veterans Day, remembrance of the assassination of president John F. Kennedy and Thanksgiving.

At Applause Radio Show (ARS) we thought we might touch on these in some way. As it is not an official month that has anything to do with the television show/ band The Monkees, we were lucky enough to find some people who were and are affiliated with The Monkees. So, we could call November at ARS Monkees’ Month but also more than that.

On Nov. 1, we welcomed Valerie Venet.

Venet started playing small roles on the show but then became the girl who when they needed a girl, she was the girl. If you should watch the show and see a girl in the scenes, it is likely Venet.

Venet began her acting career at quite a young age.

She was a receptionist on the Hollywood lot where they filmed “The Monkees,” “Batman,” “I Dream of Jeanie” and all those great shows during the time.

She would be a stand-in for Davy Jones in-between scenes and they liked her so much that she didn’t just get a role on the show, she

became family. Rumor has it that The Monkees’ song “Valerie” was written about her.

Once you see Venet, you will then recognize her from many “Batman” episodes as well. She is still acting, but during the pandemic, she is enjoying time with her grandchildren.

As we progress through the Monkee Month, Buffy Ford Stewart joins us in November as well. Buffy worked very closely with The Monkees too and has some other great stories to tell.

Her husband John Stewart wrote “Daydream Believer.” Buffy will appear Nov. 22.

On Sunday, Nov. 8, we had a chat with musician/ director duo Robyn Rosenkrantz and Michael Glover from Bright Blue Gorilla.

Rosenkrantz and Glover were musicians who sold everything they had and decided to take off and travel the world. While doing so, they met many amazing and talented people.

They toured Europe and the US playing their music and promoting their movies. Their current movie, “36 Husbands” was released overseas Oct. 20. It is being released this week in the US. It is a spy comedy, their seventh film.

I love the theme song to the movie, “Love Potion Number 36.” The bass and the toms are kicking. I am very partial to the bass and

drums.

You can check out the movie’s trailer on YouTube or you can enjoy the move at any online outlet. I am hoping to catch it soon.

Now regarding Veterans Day -- we have two great songs we will air in honor of veterans and America.

Bobby Pileggi from Aloha Records has a new song from the band Hana, from Hawaii.

It is a fantastic song called “I Am an American Yeah” and Rick Ryan will be coming back for his song, “Shadowland.”

But before we get to our Veterans Day show, you

may want to join us as we welcome actor Billy Gray.

Not sure who Gray is?

Well, he is Bud from “Father Knows Best.” He is a great guy, and I can’t wait to speak with him.

Help is available to veterans in need The Elizabeth Dole Foundation and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs have launched an emergency respite care fund for the family caregivers of wounded, ill and injured veterans.

The program, Respite Relief for Military and Veteran Caregivers, will provide non-medical, nocost, professional home care to veteran caregivers who are struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic.

CareLinx, a nationwide professional home care

network, helped launch the fund with a donation of $1 million worth of services. Wounded Warrior Project then contributed an additional $1 million to expand the program.

The foundation expects to provide 75,000 hours of care to more than 3,000 veteran caregivers.

“The lack of affordable, convenient, professional respite care has always taken a significant toll on the emotional and physical well-being of veteran caregivers,” Steve Schwab,

CEO of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, said. “Now, due to the increased health risks and limitations created by the pandemic, we are seeing a spike in the need for shortterm relief.”

Even as states reopen, some of the most critically wounded or sick veterans and their caregivers will have a long journey back to a pre-pandemic world, the foundation says.

These veterans often have vulnerable immune systems that require their caregivers to take every precaution

against exposure. By asking family and friends to keep their distance, they are losing a vital source of daily support.

Nutley clinches SFC Freedom White Division with historic win Before the 2020 high school football season began, Nutley High School head coach Steve DiGregorio had extremely high hopes.

“I really thought we were going to be a good team,” DiGregorio said. “I thought we had some good experience on the line on both sides. I thought we had running backs that had some experience.”

The returning players agreed.

“I knew we would be a competitive team,” said senior captain Jake Walsh. “We had a lot of experience. We had a lot of good players.”

But having experience and talent isn’t everything.

“We just needed a lot of things that had to go right,” DiGregorio said.

For one was a season. With the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic throwing everything for a loop, the Maroon Raiders simply needed to get on the field. In the case of the Maroon Raiders, it would mean getting on a brand new field, as the Nutley Oval underwent a picturesque overhaul complete with a new FieldTurf surface.

But as the health concerns about the coronavirus eased a bit and state officials allowed high school sports to return to action, it was evident that there would be some provisions if high school football was going to exist in 2020.

The NJSIAA ruled that there would be no state playoff this season and that football teams would be limited to an eight-game schedule to be completed by Thanksgiving weekend.

“This season is so crazy,” DiGregorio said. “I told the kids to treat every game like it’s their last one. That they had to pick each other up and keep playing. We had to believe we were fortunate to keep playing and that we had to take it one game at a time.”

With that in mind, the New Jersey Super Football Conference—Freedom White Division became a goal.

“With nothing else to win, we had to take what we could get,” Walsh said.

“I had a lot of confidence in my teammates,” said junior quarterback Matt Harbison. “If we would go out each game with heart and integrity, then good things would happen for us.”

T

he Lyndhurst High School girls’ cross country team was not expected to be a contender in 2020. That’s basically because veteran coach Michael Picardo had no idea what kind of a roster he was going to have – and Picardo had to deal with the obstacle of a coronavirus pandemic.

“I had two seniors (Tanveer Kaur and Emily Gabriel) who worked hard during the summer and carried us,” Picardo said. “They had organized team workouts all throughout July and August.

I was able to communicate with them through Zoom meetings. But they were the ones who got everyone together to run.”

So Picardo had no idea how good his incoming freshmen would be.

Picardo also didn’t know about some athletes who decided to change sports.

Basically, Picardo had no idea about how his team would fare.

A little more than two

months later, Picardo has a solid idea that the Golden Bears are indeed a good program once again.

That’s because talented freshmen Lynn Doke and Julia Sales joined the program. And it’s because Tara Kibbe decided to join the cross country team after playing soccer last year as a freshman.

The influx of new blood has enabled the Golden Bears to climb all the way to a second place team finish at the recent North Jersey Interscholastic Conference-Colonial Division championships at the Garret Mountain Reserve in Woodland Park.

Doke finished first overall in 22:22, with senior Kaur fifth in 22:59 and junior Ariana Perez eighth in 23:20.

The biggest setback in that race was that Kibbe lost her place in the race and had to regroup.

“I just went the wrong way,” Kibbe said. “I realized when I saw no one behind me that I made a mistake.

I actually ran into a coach who told me I was going the wrong way. I really didn’t want to stop running, so I just

turned and kept going. I saw how many people were in front of me.”

Kibbe recovered somewhat to finish 22nd overall in a pedestrian 24:19. If Kibbe doesn’t lose her way on the course, the Golden Bears would more than likely won the race.

Kibbe didn’t sulk long after the race. She managed to recover nicely to finish 22nd overall at the North Jersey Invitational, a race that included all of the schools in northern New Jersey and featured 300 runners. Kibbe finished the course at Garret Mountain in a brisk 21:16.

“I didn’t think it would be anything like this,” Kibbe said of running cross country.

“I was lucky to have people like Emily and Tanveer as role models. They worked me hard. It’s crazy, because I never even thought about cross country.”

Doke has a league championship to build upon.

“I had no idea what this would be,” Doke said. “I wanted to play soccer, but I hurt my foot. I didn’t know Continued on page 11

“I honestly didn’t think it was an option,” Harbison said.

“I didn’t think we would be this good,” Walsh said.

It all became a reality last Thursday night, when the Maroon Raiders defeated Columbia, 26-14, to clinch the SFC-Freedom White divisional crown.

It marks the first time since 2015, when the Maroon Raiders won the Liberty Division of the old Super Essex Conference, that Nutley claimed a football championship.

With the win, the Maroon Raiders improved to 5-0 on the season. That alone is remarkable. The divisional title is just the icing on the cake.

And once again, it was a collective effort that carried the Maroon Raiders to the win. Gennaro Longobardi did the majority of work, carrying the ball 25 times for 160 yards. Harbison completed four passes for 99 yards

and scored a touchdown rushing. Mitch Mainiero scored touchdowns on runs of 12 and 35 yards.

Billy Mielnicki intercepted a pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown and also had a clutch reception of 45 yards.

There’s no question that the Maroon Raiders represent the epitome of “team.” Every week, there seems to be another player who steps to the forefront to lead the way.

“We try to get all of the players involved,” DiGregorio said. “For example, we hadn’t thrown the ball to Billy (Mielnicki) all year and he makes that big catch. We have a number of players who can make plays. Of course, it makes the team easier to coach. The ball gets distributed well.”

“We put it all together,” Walsh said. “The defense was outstanding. The offense was great. We don’t need that one guy to carry us. We do it as a team.”

“We never really need an incentive to play,” DiGregorio said. “But the kids were told what was on the line. They responded well.”

“Coach D mentioned that it had a chance to be the 500th win,” Harbison said.

“We kept that in mind. We had to come out and prove ourselves. We wanted to go out and play for Coach D. We didn’t want to disappoint him.”

He did all the work, so we wanted to do whatever we could to pay him back.”

The Maroon Raiders have three games remaining.

They will face Montclair on Saturday, followed by River Dell Nov. 21 and then Belleville Nov. 27. All three games are slated to be played at the Nutley Oval at 1 p.m.

The schedule ahead won’t be easy. Montclair has traditionally been one of the best public school programs in the state. River Dell, coached

by DiGregorio’s friend D.J. Nimphius, owns a 5-1 record. Belleville just returned to action over the weekend after missing a month due to the coronavirus. Yes, it has not been a conventional season.

But it’s still a year that will end in a championship for the Maroon Raiders.

“As the quarterback, I do have the responsibility to be the leader of this team.

So we pick each other up, after a tough game or a tough practice. We have a great group of guys. So we have Montclair and River Dell. We now have a shot to show people we can play, that Nutley is the real deal.”

“It’s a credit to the kids and the coaching staff,” DiGregorio said. “It’s a very special group. We all talk about handling adversity and how you can turn adversity into a positive.

It’s my job to get the team ready.”

Perez is a junior who has also improved tremendously.

“It’s the first year she’s been healthy,” Picardo said.

“She had a stress fracture and had knee surgery. If she’s fully healthy, she might be our best runner.

She’s starting now to get in shape.”

Perez was the second Golden Bear to cross the line Saturday at the North Jersey Invitational, coming home in 23:21, good for 52nd overall. Doke was 57th overall in 23:40.

Emily Gabriel has also been an inspirational leader.

Kibbe has now proven to be a runner for the future.

“She’s a bulldog,” Picardo said. “She does everything right. She’s a quiet leader.

“I think we’re on to bigger and better things,” Kibbe said. “I’m now looking forward to next cross country season as well.”

Needless to say, it’s all been fun for the coach, who was caught off guard by the team’s success.

“I didn’t expect any of this,” Picardo said. “I’m dumbfounded. It’s all just dumb luck.”

NA’s Witt: The Vikings’ little big man

By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com At the end of the 2019 high school football season, North Arlington head coach Paul Savage knew that he had to do something with the Vikings’ offensive approach.

Savage had to switch things up to best suit the Vikings’ personnel.

So Savage decided to go away from the spread offense that the Vikings used in the past to an offense that isn’t readily seen in high school football anywhere.

Savage went with what he best called “a flex triple option,” which best resembled the offense that has been used by the Armed Service Academies, namely Air Force and Navy.

And there was a main reason why Savage made the switch to the new fangled offense: Joey Witt.

The senior quarterback

is perhaps the most athletic player on the field. Witt might not be blessed with a ton of size. On the roster, Witt is officially listed at 5-foot-7 and 155 pounds, but he might even be smaller than that.

But Witt has been blessed with incredible athleticism, a trait that has enabled to carry Witt through all three major sports – football, basketball and baseball.

For the first two years of his football career, Witt was a wide receiver for the Vikings on offense and a defensive back on defense.

Witt earned All-North Jersey Interscholastic Conference honors as a receiver, but in his heart of hearts, Witt always knew he was a quarterback.

“I was a quarterback my whole life,” Witt said. “I always thought of myself as a quarterback.”

So that’s where Witt played last season, calling the signals

and making the most of his talents as a quarterback.

When Savage contrived the idea of switching up the offense to the triple option, he knew two things.

“I knew we had about five running backs,” Savage said.

“I knew that all five were capable of doing something with the ball.”

And the other thing Savage knew?

“Joey was our main weapon,” Savage said. “Joey is a dynamic runner, but he had to be even more dynamic.

I think having Joey in the new offense could eventually open up our passing game tremendously.”

Witt liked the idea of changing offenses.

“I was definitely interested,” Witt said. “I could tell that our pass offense really wasn’t working and we needed something new. I thought the triple option would work for us.

I wasn’t concerned with learning it. I knew I’d be alright. I thought it would be a really tough offense to stop,

because no one could prepare for it. I knew that I was going to be really good with it.”

“Joey knew that there’s no other offense like this,” Savage said. “No one else runs it, so it was an advantage to us.”

Last week, the Vikings faced Fort Lee in a crucial game. A loss would have doomed the Vikings, giving them a 1-3 record. With a season shortened by the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, there would have been no recovery.

“There was a little bit of pressure on us,” Witt said.

“But I like having all that pressure on me.”

Savage said that he had a talk with Witt prior to the game.

“I told him that he was one of our leaders and had to lead us to victory,” Savage said. “I said, ‘You have to do it.’ But Joey knew. He’s an emotional kid. Joey trusts me and knew that he had to have the ball in his hands.

He has the option to run the ball or pass. It comes down to Joey and his leadership.

It’s all Joey. He has the big responsibility and he has the football knowledge in everything involved. He can read the defense and make the decisions.”

Obituaries JULLY JOHN

Jully John of Harrison died Nov. 4, 2020, after a long and courageous battle.

She was 44.

Visitation was at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, Kearny. A funeral service will be celebrated in the funeral home on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Born in Callao, Peru, Jully lived in Weehawken before moving to Harrison over 20 years ago. Kind and compassionate all her life, she proudly became a licensed practical nurse to help those in need.

She loved to travel, and especially liked taking road trips.

An excellent cook, she most treasured time spent with her family.

The cherished daughter of Carlos and Gladys John, Jully was the wife of Manuel Colon; loving mother of Jonathan Colon and Tiffany Castellanos; dear sister of Shirley John, Henry John and his wife Cherrie and Carlos John Jr. and his wife Blanca, she is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Susan B. Komen Foundation for the Cure.

VIRGINIA E. MAHONEY

Virginia E. Mahoney, (nee Johnson), 78, died peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2020, at her home in Kearny, surrounded by her family.

The funeral service was at the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington, Kearny. Interment was in Arlington Cemetery, Kearny.

Ms. Mahoney was born in Jersey City and lived in Kearny her entire life.

She was a Human Resource Administrator for Deloitte & Touche at the World Financial Center in New York City for 20 years before retiring in 2004.

Virginia served several terms as a deacon at First Presbyterian Church and also volunteered regularly at the church’s thrift shop.

She is survived by her

Francis L. Eagan Jr., 82, of Allentown, died Monday, Nov. 2, 2020 at RWJ Hamilton.

Born in Newark, he lived in North Arlington for 40 years before moving to Wayne. His dream of owning a horse farm eventually brought him to the Allentown area where he had been since 1988.

Son of the late Madeline and Francis L. Eagan Sr., he was predeceased by his wife, Mary Lou Eagan.

Frank is survived by his children, Kathleen and Joseph Sandford of New Egypt; Francis III and Theresa Eagan of Toms River and Daniel Eagan of Cream Ridge; his grandchildren, Lynn Kerr and her husband Dan, Laura Sandford, Shannon Eagan and Sean Eagan; his great-grandson, Connor Kerr and his brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Jane Eagan of Whippany.

Frank, as he was known by many, was the epitome of an entrepreneur.

His entrepreneurial adventures and hard work began when he was only 18 and opened Eagan’s Automatic Transmission Specialists.

From there, he joined Eagan’s Restaurant in North Arlington, Carousel Ice Cream in Kearny, Joker’s Wild Amusements in Seaside, the MilkieWay in Lavallette, Sterling Farm and Eagan’s Trucking in Cream Ridge and Eagan’s Truck Parts in Robbinsville.

Whether he bought you a dinner or a drink, sponsored a team or donated to your cause, he left a lasting impression on many. His wit and personality will be missed by many.

Visitation was at the Peppler Funeral Home, 114 S. Main St. Allentown. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. John’s Church, Allentown.

Interment was in the parish

cemetery.

RICHARD O’DONNELL

Richard O’Donnell, a former resident of Kearny, died Oct. 29, 2020, after a long illness.

He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on March 16, 1934.

He served in the signal corps of the British army.

Richard immigrated to Rochester, New York, in 1968, then moved to Kearny.

He was a regular member of the Scots American Club where he was a sometime bartender.

Richard returned to the UK where he lived in London for a few years before settling back in Glasgow.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Cornelius, Patrick and James.

He is survived by a brother Andrew (Patricia) in England, a sister Christina (John) in Charlotte, North Carolina and many nieces and nephews.

Donald Todd Donald Todd of Kearny died Nov. 3, 2020.

He was 85.

A graveside service for Donald took place at Arlington Cemetery, Kearny.

Arrangements were entrusted to the care of the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, Kearny.

A lifelong resident of Kearny, Donald worked for Wilbur B. Driver for many years. In recent years, he was a dedicated member of the Kearny Seniors.

Donald enjoyed playing bingo and always looked forward to his next trip to the casino.

Donald was the beloved husband of Marie (nee Krantz) Todd; loving father of Donald Peter Todd and his wife Elaine and Patricia Hogan and her husband Patrick. He was the cherished grandfather of Nicole, Allison and William, and was the dear brother of Thomas Todd, Mary Walsh, Judith Platt and Gary Todd. He was predeceased by his siblings Wallace, Phyllis, Ellen, Barbara, Jackie and Billy.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Heart Associa-

tion.

MILDRED J. WELLER

Mildred J. Weller, 96, of Hollywood, Florida, died Sept. 29, 2020.

Mildred was born June 18, 1924, in Harrison, the daughter of the late Philip R. and Julia Belle Axson Fash.

Shortly after her birth, the family relocated to Lincolnville, South Carolina. The family returned to Kearny between 1932 and 1935. In 1942, Mildred married Robert T. Weller. Mildred and Robert moved to Hollywood, Florida,

Continued from Page 5 Street at the foot of Franklin where Harrison High School now lives. But it’s clear as day in the movie — once the LaRussos are pulling out of their parking spot in their hideously old jalopy station wagon, they’re in good old Harrison.

We first found out about this little tidbit from our own JoAnn Barton, who you know as our entertainment correspondent and the host of the Applause Radio Show. She knew about it because when she was a wee one, she lived on Franklin Avenue and was

there, watching the movie being filmed, from her apartment window.

She recalls that even though Macchio (LaRusso) can’t actually be seen in the opening scene, he was really in Harrison for filming when the car pulls away, heading north on Franklin, even though the traffic flowed (and still does) southbound.

“We knew the traffic was going in the wrong direction,” Barton recalls. “But it was so cool to see them filming. Everyone in the neighborhood was so excited when it happened. If you take a look at the houses in the movie and then look at it today, you can totally see it.”

Witt carried the ball 18 times for 95 yards and one touchdown and completed four-of-six passes for 140 yards and two more TDs. On defense, Witt made a game-saving tackle at the 4-yard-line on the game’s final drive and broke up a pass on the last play of the game, leading the Vikings to a huge 28-26 victory.

For his efforts, Witt has been selected as The Observer Athlete of the Week for the past week. Almost incredibly, Witt earned the honor a year ago to the date.

Witt was the Observer AOW in the Nov. 7, 2019 editions – but that week came in a loss to Bogota. This time, the honor comes in victory.

The Vikings now own a 2-2 record. They have not been .500 or better at this point of the season since 2015. The Vikings will have games against Palisades Park, Wallington and Secaucus upcoming, all in the span of nine days.

But Witt knows that the Vikings will be ready for the challenge ahead.

“I think we’re all excited,” Witt said.

“This game was a real confidence booster.

If we didn’t win, we might have packed it in right there. If we lost this game, we could have put our heads down. But the entire atmosphere changed. It really did.”

Witt said that he had to get back onto the gridiron this fall.

“I’m not the kind of kid who wants to sit at home playing video games,” Witt said.

“I want to get after it. I want the competition. I like to play. It’s why I play three sports. I need to stay active.”

And although Witt loves being the Vikings’ quarterback, he would much rather be the team’s safety, another position he plays.

“I love flying around the field doing what I want,” Witt said. “I like coming up and making a hit.”

Witt also loves playing basketball, but he hopes to play his favorite sport, namely baseball, in college.

“I want to play baseball at the next level,” Witt said. “That’s the ultimate goal.”

For now, he’s the quarterback of a flex triple option offense.

“He really hasn’t gotten his feet wet in the position,” Savage said. “But he knows a lot more of what’s going on. He had a challenge and he stepped up to the plate.”

In the case of Joey Witt, it’s always safe using a baseball analogy, even during football season.

So what exactly happened to cause the late flooding last week?

Auteri says engineers said during “dynamic compaction” a “corrugated pipe broke “ at a construction site on Polito Avenue.

The Federal Department of Transportation calls dynamic compaction a method used to “improve weak ground deposits” including that of “natural occurring soils,” “landfill deposits,” “building rubble,” “partially saturated clay fill deposits” and “collapsible soils.”

As of Thursday, Nov. 5, a private crew was on-site working to make the necessary repairs. The project was being overseen by the Township of Lyndhurst and Neglia Engineering, the township’s official engineer-

ing firm.

Auteri says the flooding caused water levels 2-feet high in most areas to as high as 3.5-feet in smaller areas.

Since some of the property in question is owned by the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority, officials from that state agency were also supervising the repairs meant to get the water to fully recede.

The Lyndhurst Office of

Emergency Management, Bergen Count OEM, the NJ State Police, Lyndhurst Department of Public Works and Parks Department were also assisting.

The closure of the road required the re-routing of several bus routes as well as regular traffic in the area. Medieval Times is not open, so its business was not deterred by the flooding, but Auteri says a few hotels in

the area, an eatery, a daycare center and an office complex “may have had a difficult time” during the closure.

When the floods first began, following the rains, several drivers attempted to navigate the flood waters, despite the road signage indicating closure. Police had to rescue at least two civilians whose vehicles got stuck in the 2-foot high water.

“Fortunately, no one was injured,” Auteri said.

The same probably couldn’t be said for the vehicles, which couldn’t be towed until the water recedes, according to Auteri.

“The civilians who were helped had no choice but to abandon their cars,” he said.
