It was a bit later than usual, but middle school students in Lyndhurst got an in-person graduation on Thursday of last week at LHS — and the socially-distant ceremony featured a surprise from Mayor Robert B. Giangeruso and the Board of Commissioners — a plane fly-by with a banner in tow, reading: ‘Congrats Graduates Class of 2020 — Mayor and Commissioners.’ We join in congratulating all members of the Class of 2020.

o say the first six months of 2020 have been trying would be a gross understatement. Just a few weeks into the year, all that promise of a new beginning came to a screeching halt when much of the world shut down because of COVID-19.

You know that already, though.

Because of the pandemic, however, one thing changed in The Observer’s world — and that is that Web traffic grew exponentially. There could be a myriad of reasons as to why this happened, but we’re sure people being stuck inside certainly was a principal factor.

Here, therefore, is a look at the Top 10 stories on www. theobserver.com from Jan. 1 through June 30.

10) Mayor Fife addresses town; Harrison has ‘several’ COVID cases In the beginning, it wasn’t clear whether towns in our area would be forthcoming about the number of cases of COVID-19 reported. However, just weeks after the pandemic broke out, Mayor James A. Fife quickly took to the

media to send out a message of concern to all Harrison residents.

At first, Harrison appeared to be spared from the pandemic, with only “several” cases reported. That was March. The number of cases grew as time went on.

Two men were arrested by the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office with nearly a half-ton of marijuana in a truck in South Kearny. The HCSO even posed for a photo with the massive stash laid out on a long table. It was a great collar, to say the very least.

But as many of our readers know, bail reform in New Jersey has been a hotbed issue. And, because their “bail scores” were low, the two men who were arrested in this case for possessing the pot were both released on their own recognizance.

Neither of the two are from Jersey either — one is from New York and the other is from Ontario, Canada.

According to records, the case is still active, likely because many court dates have been canceled on account of the pandemic.

8) Priest with ties to Kearny, Lyndhurst placed on leave The Rev. Salvatore DiStefano, who served parishes in Lyndhurst and Kearny, and who was the chaplain at Oratory Preparatory School, Summit, was removed from active ministry following allegations levied against him through the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, according to reports.

It was not immediately clear what the allegations were specifically.

Said Maria Margiotta, the spokeswoman for the Archdiocese of Newark: “The archdiocese also stresses that Fr. DiStefano’s leave should not be interpreted as punishment and he continues to have the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise. At the conclusion of a review and external investigation by civil authorities, a determination will be made regarding Fr. DiStefano’s status.”

Despite the presumption of innocence, the Oratory Prep website removed all references to DiStefano only a few days after his being placed on leave.

7) Idiot claims to have Coronavirus, coughs at Kearny cops File this one under the valley of the ridiculous. A man who police were attempting to take into custody reportedly told Kearny police officers he “had Coronavirus” and then went on to cough directly at the arresting officers, according to reports.

Fortunately for the officers involved, they were already well protected with PPE. However, at the time, it wasn’t immediately clear whether the guy really had COVID-19. But, as it were, the man was remanded to the Hudson County Jail, South Kearny, and would no longer be able to tell anyone in the free world whether he truly had the deadly virus.

6) KPD: Lethal threat on Hickory Street On March 1 at 10:50 p.m., Kearny Police Officer JeanPaul Duran and several backup officers were dispatched to a home on Hickory Street on a report that a male trespasser in the backyard was threatening to kill a family who lived in the house.

Police said they found Hector Reynoso, 32, of the Bronx, seated in a patio chair in the dark and learned he was estranged from the residents (different last name than his). They reportedly Continued on the next page

That day, police said, he returned, the homeowners refused to let him back inside and in response, Reynoso allegedly threatened to kill the family.

The Kearny PD took him into custody, and a search incident to his arrest reportedly revealed he had a steak knife in his back pants pocket — and in other pockets, six New York State IDs in the names of four other people.

Reynoso was charged with criminal trespass, defiant trespass, terroristic threats, unlawful possession of a weapon and four counts of theft of property lost or mislaid. He was remanded to the Hudson County Jail.

Unfortunately, there’s no update to Reynoso’s status.

5) Passaic County man, wanted for alleged attempted homicide, taken into custody by LPD: Auteri A Passaic County man wanted by authorities in Smyth County, Virginia, for an alleged attempted homicide was taken into custody Sunday, June 7, at the Winslow Motel by the Lyndhurst Police Department, Det. Auteri said authorities in Smyth County in Virginia had called them with intelligence that Wyble was likely at the Winslow Motel at 204 Rutherford Ave., Lyndhurst.

While not much was immediately known about the incident that led to Wyble being a fugitive from justice, Auteri said he believed the charge stemmed from a drug deal gone bad in Virginia.

Smyth County, Virginia, is located in the southwestern portion of the state and at the 2010 Census, had a little more than 32,000 residents. Its borders near North Carolina and Tennessee. It is also just a few counties away from Kentucky.

Blood, husband of Kearny Superintendent of Schools Patricia Blood, dies aged 68 As the pandemic just started to spread around the nation, the superintendent of Kearny Schools Patricia Blood experienced a tragedy of her own as her husband, Joseph, died at 68. As the superintendent was burying her husband, she was also in discussions with various other town officials as to whether to shut schools down (eventually, Mrs. Blood first closed schools for two weeks, before

The officer terminated the pursuit, but on his way back to town, came upon the Audi crashed and disabled in the highway near exit 4. Officer Nunez saw Jeffrey M. Plumer Jr, 38, of Kearny, bleeding from the head and running away from the car.

Officer Nunez gave chase across the three southbound lanes of Rt. 21. Plumer allegedly ignored the officer’s brandishing of his firearm as constructive authority. Officer Nunez followed Plumer as he climbed a retaining wall and then a fence.

When Plumer tried to climb a second fence in a private driveway, Officer Nunez grabbed a hold of him. Plumer reportedly pushed off the fence hitting

the officer in the chest. Both men fell to the ground sustaining scrapes as Plumer allegedly continued to resist arrest. Luckily, this isn’t New York City, so the officer was legally able to wrestle Plumer into a wrist lock and take him under arrest.

Plumer was charged with theft, eluding, resisting arrest, and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. He was issued traffic tickets for driving with a suspended license, disregard of a traffic signal and reckless driving before being lodged in the Hudson County jail.

On July 3 at 4:39 p.m., several officers responded to a restaurant on the 200 block of Kearny Avenue for a report of a fight involving a knife.

Luckily, the warring parties had already separated without injuring anyone before police arrived.

Officers learned that two kitchen employees had an argument over who would take orders from whom.

It was then alleged that one of the employees, Antonio Deo, 36, of Kearny, picked up a kitchen knife and lunged at his co-worker, a 26-year-old Kearny man. The victim jumped back and ran for a back room where he

Artist brings talents to Belleville from a world away

O

ne Belleville artist, (seen painting at the right) who came to America from a world away, is making a difference — and making the township look even better. A colorful mural that adorns Town Hall was created by the artist who came to Belleville from 5,000+ miles.

The “Belleville Strong” piece is big, bright and bold, and it’s a reminder of how much immigrants continue to contribute to the township and the nation.

As the United States celebrated Independence Day, it’s was a time to pause and think about people like Athena Zhe, who bring their hopes, their dreams and, sometimes, their paintbrushes to their new home.

“She may be almost 5,000 miles away from her native Ukraine,” Mayor Michael Melham said, “but she has made Belleville her home. Her artwork has added a burst of color and beauty to the township.”

In addition to the “Belleville Strong” sign, Zhe has also used her pallet to beautify an everyday traffic control box at the corner of Joralemon Street and Franklin Avenue.

The box is now covered with Belleville’s trademark cherry blossoms against a soft green backdrop.

In her year and a half living in Belleville, Zhe said, she has been inspired by the friendly people and the blossoms that appear every spring.

“I discovered the cherry blossoms by accident one day this spring,” she said. “I went for a drive and I was like, ‘Wow, I didn’t know I lived in such a beautiful place.’ This is the Cherry Blossom Capital of the World and the world should know about it.”

Zhe, who also teaches art and does commission work, approached Melham, looking for a way to donate her time and talent. She and Melham discussed ways she could show her pride in her new home through her art.

It didn’t take long for residents of Belleville to get behind Zhe as she spent about three days painting the traffic control box. Many people would stop and tell her how much they liked her work.

On the third and final day, while she was on the sidewalk with paint and brushes, a nearby restaurant owner came out and gave her lunch as a gesture of gratitude.

“I’m so proud that town has put my work on display,” Zhe said. “I hope it can inspire others to make Bel-

leville even more beautiful.”

To further her connection with Belleville residents, Zhe hosted a “Patriotic Painting in the Park,” a backdrop for the township’s Fourth of July activities over the weekend, which included “Yoga in the Park.”

“Her work has captured the spirit of the township and her pride in Belleville comes through with each brush stroke,” Melham said. “It is a tremendous gift as we celebrate our country’s freedom.”

Is it time to consider term limits for local elected officials?

T

here’s been a lot of discussion, of late, on the pages of this newspaper — all in letters to the editor — as to whether municipal elected officials should be subject to term limits.

Having given it substantial thought, we believe the time is right for such a discussion.

We live in a region where at one point, Frank E. Rodgers, the late-former mayor of Harrison, held a record as the longest-serving mayor in the history in the United States of America at nearly 50 years.

And though that record has since been broken — and exceeded by a lot of years (a former Texas mayor led for 63+ years) — there’s no doubt people in this area are keenly aware of mayoralties that have gone on for long periods of time.

In Kearny, Mayor Alberto G. Santos has served since he first won a 2-year term against Republican John Leadbeater back in 1999 and he is not too far away from reaching half of Rodgers’s longevity.

After he took office in 2000 — and it became clear he had an open lane to keeping his seat as long as he desired — Santos and his colleagues changed the mayoral and council terms from 2 years to 4 years. And that’s fine given how fast a turnaround a 2-year term truly is election-wise.

Just ask any member of Congress.

But when it’s 4-year term after term after term after term, it’s possible — and probable — in general terms, that one person could get stale.

One person could get too complacent. One person could get too dictatorial.

And term limits, frankly, would fix that.

So the time to ensure no one person can spend a lifetime in a single position of authority is here.

Term limits are needed. Not just on a local level, either — they’re needed for almost all offices, including and especially for Congress.

Though as much as we encourage them, we’re fairly certain we’ll never see term limits. Because we know few currently sitting on a dais anywhere would be ready to cede the power, the prestige.

But if ever there was a time for it, it’s now.

Writer: NA raises in a pandemic? What?

To the Editor: In the midst of a pandemic that has sent millions to the unemployment line and is forcing businesses to close, the administration of North Arlington Mayor Daniel H. Pronti and the council gave themselves pay raises and doled out increases to 25 borough employees.

The raises were approved at the June 11 Borough Council meeting and are retroactive to Jan. 1, 2020. No reason for the raises was given then and none has come forward since then.

Pronti’s salary will increase to $11,385 and the councilmembers pay will climb to $9,832.50 per year.

Under the 2016 salary ordinance, the mayor’s salary was fixed at no more than $9,500 and the council members’ salaries topped out at $8,000, which means the mayor gave himself nearly a $1,900 raise and the council gave themselves a pay boost of more than $1,800.

The long list of raises was not transparent since there was no mention in the resolutions that the council approved showing the existing salaries of the 32 people who received raises or

OP-ED what percent increase, they received. Department heads received raises including Court Administrator Gina Marshall, whose new salary is $90,000 per year. Under the previous salary ordinance, the top salary was $71,000.

As a Democratic council candidate, I say the raises are a slap in the face to the people of North Arlington.

At a time when people are losing jobs, taking pay cuts and losing businesses, the mayor and council should not be giving themselves pay raises — especially raises that are six-months retroactive.

The most outrageous retroactive raises was for Jimmy Herrmann, the recreation director ($8,792.50).

There have been no recreation sports since the winter sports season ended, so I ask, why are they giving Herrmann a retroactive raise when he’s had nothing to do for four months?

The mayor and council are sending the wrong message at a critical time in our country.

together. It doesn’t look that way in North Arlington.

My council running mate John Yampaglia and I believe the raises are unjustified and show how tone deaf the mayor and council are to the plight of many residents and business owners.

John is a small-business owner, and he’s been forced to lay off employees and take a huge financial hit because of the state’s business shutdown.

I know how bad this pandemic is hurting wage earners and business owners.

Yet in the face of this national emergency, the mayor and council somehow think they deserve a raise. We wish they would explain why.

My running mate and I were outraged that Councilwoman Donna Bocchino voted not only for her own raise but to give her father, James Bocchino, a raise as well.

Mr. Bocchino, who is also the borough’s Republican Party leader, was appointed

by Pronti (a Republican) last April to a new position created just for the elder Bocchino: The Quality of Life Officer.

Writer: It’s heartbreaking to see what restaurants are experiencing To the Editor: The July 8 Observer frontpage story, “Murphy’s Law,” was heartbreaking.

I can’t even begin to imagine the anger and frustration of our local business owners, especially restaurateurs, at the “open/don’t open” see-saw decision-making coming from Gov. Philip D. Murphy and the contradictory rules of the different municipalities.

But Murphy, along with other governors, mayors and local officials around the country, are trying to put

out the flames of small brush fires when in reality the whole country is ablaze with COVID-19. This patchwork of policies is due to a lack of leadership from the top.

Other countries, such as New Zealand, Australia, Norway and South Korea have responded at a national level, instituted nationwide policies, and have been able to bend the curve of new cases downward.

South Korea has effectively stopped the virus in its tracks.

While America was being told that “we have just 15 cases, and soon

it will be zero,” and that the virus would somehow “miraculously” go away, the South Korean government was swinging into action. In late January, just one week after the country’s first case was diagnosed, government officials urged medical companies to develop test kits and told manufacturers to prepare for mass production.

South Korean officials opened hundreds of drive-through testing centers to reduce face-to-face contact indoors. They also developed contact tracing and mandated self-quarantine

for those who were infected.

Meanwhile, here in America, preventive healthcare has somehow been turned into a cultural issue.

Freedom does not mean you have the right to do whatever you want; rather, freedom is the opportunity to do what is right. President Harry S. Truman said: “The buck stops here.”

But our current president, Donald J. Trump, has passed the buck, and our states and cities have been left to fend for themselves.

Voter: We need Congress to protect the November mail-in election To the Editor: The impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on all of our lives is clear. Even as some states begin to recover or even reopen, many of us are still worried for the health and wellbeing of our families, friends and colleagues.

But I’m also worried about the impact this crisis will have on our elections. After seeing

how it impacted elections already this year in places like Wisconsin and Georgia, I’m scared this pandemic will jeopardize Americans’ ability to vote in-person in the 2020 election.

While some states are taking steps to help people vote safely, President Donald J. Trump and his administration are going to great lengths to make mail-in voting seem like

a voter fraud scheme — even though Trump himself votes by mail. It’s clear Congress needs to intervene and focus on what’s right for the American people in every state: expanding vote-by-mail and other voting options.

To keep voters safe, we need our representatives in the House and Senate to provide states with emergency funding to ensure every eligi-

ble American may safely cast their ballot through the mail, that they can register to vote online and that any in-person polling places are safe for voters and poll workers.

For this election, we must protect every eligible voter’s right to have a say in who is in office. The leaders we elect in 2020 can take actions that improve the health and well-being of all Americans, or put us

at further risk.

I’m demanding our representatives in Congress come together and provide economic relief for Americans and also ensure states have the resources they need to safeguard the 2020 election.

Nothing less than our democracy is at stake.

While no voting system is perfect, we already know voting by mail works. Multiple states already conduct their elections almost entirely by mail, with incredibly high turn-out rates. According to The New York Times, in the 2018 midterms, states that allowed voting by mail had, on average, a 15.5% higher turnout than states that did not.

That’s why voting rights experts agree: Americans must be able to cast a ballot by mail to ensure they may safely and securely vote this year.

President Donald J. Trump and his cronies are wrong: mail-in voting is not a means to rig the vote. In fact, Trump himself has voted by mail numerous times.

Funding has already been approved by the House, so it’s far past time for the Senate to step up and make sure that voting is safe, fair and accessi-

Eagle Scout’s project upgrades parts of St. Stephen’s

he Scouts of Troop 305 continue to do great things for the local community, especially when it comes to Eagle projects.

So it should come as no surprise that being helpful, the third tenet of the Scout Law, inspired Carlos Ascensao (third from left in photo) in the planning of his recently completed Eagle Project to accommodate the growing needs of several groups at St. Stephen’s Church, Kearny.

Ascensao, of Kearny, 16, and a rising senior at High Tech High School, Life Scout and Senior Patrol Leader of Unit 305, renovated the large kitchen area in the church’s basement and created a multipurpose meeting room.

Various organizations, including the Kearny Scouts, Knights of Columbus, the

Men of St. Joseph, the Rosary Society and the CCD program, use the kitchen facilities and assembly space of Hedges Hall in the basement of

St. Stephen’s Church on a regular basis.

other functions. Ascensao addressed this request by constructing a 250 squarefoot enclosed space from the part of the kitchen adjacent to the hall.

The project required the raising of a new wall to create the St. Michael conference room.

Ascensao installed drywall, created two small closets and refurbished a door taken from another part of the church hall. He also painted the walls, laid new vinyl flooring, added trim, purchased new chairs, repurposed a conference table and relocated a large statue of St. Michael to adorn the meeting space.

To add to the practicality, Ascensao consulted with the Rev. Joseph Mancini, pastor of St. Stephen’s, and sponsor of Unit 305, on the additional electrical component of the construction.

Ascensao also painted

the kitchen walls, applied a splattered painting technique to the concrete floors and added a new stainless-steel backsplash behind the range and cooking areas to rejuvenate the kitchen that is used frequently by several groups. He also added a decorative aluminum floor plate to cover an open hole on the floor.

Proceeds from a car wash Ascensao organized in August 2019 covered the approximately $1,400 in expenses including wood, stainless steel, aluminum and construction materials.

Two local businesses donated assisted with paint and other materials.

The transformation of the well-worn kitchen took place from March 2019 through February 2020, with labor and assistance from Ascensao’s fellow Scouts, leaders and family. The volunteer work was completed in various sections to accommodate the continuation of meetings, catechism classes, and events during the project timeframe.

The completed kitchen and conference room were used by the Scouts and other church groups for a month until the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in March.

The Eagle candidate is expected to plan, fundraise, secure materials, and oversee the execution of a completed project, including managing Scout leaders and fellow Scouts in leadership activities throughout the endeavor.

Ascensao’s completed Eagle Project will be submitted to his Eagle Board of Review as the next step in his Trail to Eagle.

NJSIAA pushes back start to fall sports by one month Coronavirus forces state to take drastic measures

Lyndhurst, Nutley get ready for Last Dance World Series When local high school baseball teams were preparing for the 2020 season to begin back in early March, Lyndhurst and Nutley were two squads with legitimate high hopes and aspirations.

After all, both the Golden Bears and Maroon Raiders were coming off winning seasons in 2019. They both had a ton of talent returning for this season with deep pitching staffs and heady, intelligent players.

So therefore, there were a lot of reasons for confidence on both sides of the Passaic River.

But the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic put a damper on all that sanguinity in both camps. The entire season was disappointingly canceled.

However, three intelligent baseball men -- namely St. Joseph (Metuchen) head coach Mike Murray, Jr., Millburn head coach Brian Chapman and well traveled baseball scout and gadfly John Kroeger devised the idea to have a summer baseball tournament, called the Last Dance World Series, giving New Jersey’s baseball teams a chance to play together one more time.

When the prospects of the Last Dance were first discussed, the organizers hoped to get at least 64

teams to hold a legitimate tourney. They never fathomed the idea that they would get a whopping total of 222 teams to sign up to participate in the tourney.

Four local teams registered for the round robin get-together, which was slated to begin after press time Tuesday at 56 sites all over the state.

Each four-team sectional will see the teams face each other all once, with the teams with the best records after the round robin phase moving on to the single-elimination quarterfinal round beginning next Tuesday, July 21 at Yogi Berra Stadium in Little Falls.

Last week, we focused on Belleville, which was slated to face host West Orange in the first round Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The two other teams in that section are Passaic Valley and Seton Hall Prep, slated to face off Tuesday in West Orange at 2 p.m.

North Arlington, which was also featured last week, is headed to Wood-Ridge, where the Vikings will face the host team also at 7 p.m.

Midland Park and Bogota are the other two teams in that section with that game to have first pitch at 4 p.m.

Needless to say, this was a drastic measure to try and secure some semblance of a fall sports schedule.

The NJSIAA’s brand new executive director Colleen Maguire, just ascended into the top spot with the retirement of former director Larry White, said that the dramatic steps had to be made.

“High school sports are school-based, so we need to first ensure all is in order with the opening of our schools,” Maguire said in a statement released by the NJSIAA. “After that, we can begin playing sports. To be clear, our goal is to return to play – while making sure that health, safety, emotional well-being, and academics come first. We have a different model than some other types of programs that are far smaller in scale and operate independently.

Kearny head football coach Stephen Andrews also realizes that it is a tough situation dealing with the COVID-19 crisis.

“Of course, I’m disappointed,” Andrews said.

“But it’s something we have to deal with and we should plan accordingly.”

Lyndhurst boys’ soccer coach Denis Jelcic is with family in Croatia, but he is keeping his finger on the pulse back at home.

“I’m actually okay with it,” Jelcic said. “My team has been getting ready on their own for three months. They work out together via Zoom meetings. I think they would be upset if they cancel the whole season, so any soccer is good soccer. With the way it is constructed, we can still get 15 games in. Last year, we played something like 10 games in 14 days, so it can be done. I’ve always been positive. With what we’ve gone through over the last six months, we should be able to handle it. If you can’t put a positive spin on what’s going on, then you shouldn’t be coaching. Any amount of soccer is good soccer. We want the kids to get ready for school and want what’s right for the mental and physical well being of our kids.”

Jelcic said that he has been amazed with the way the pandemic has been handled in Croatia.

“Here they’ve had 3,000 cases overall and 117 deaths,” Jelcic said.

“No one wears a mask.

Soccer is going on here like normal. School is going on like normal. We just have to be smart at home.”

last high school season as a sophomore. Jonathon Berko, Yianni Lazaris, Aaron Alvarez and Anthony DeMarco are all quality pitchers with varsity experience.

Alvarez batted .326 with two homers and 18 RBI in the 2019 season for the Golden Bears. Berko hit .346 with one homer and 13 RBI. Catcher Rob Bloom batted .384 with 18 RBI. Needless to say, this is a talented team and one to be reckoned with.

Lyndhurst High School head coach Pat Auteri said that his team had been preparing on their own.

“It’s a pretty good feeling to get back on the field together again,” Auteri said.

“The kids have all been pretty excited every since they first read about the tournament on Twitter last month. When they found out where we were playing and at what time, they reached out to me. I know some of the seniors have been chomping at the bit.”

Auteri said that he feels pretty fortunate to receive the invitation to play in the tourney.

Lyndhurst’s Recreation facility would have been a perfect spot to serve as a host, but the field is undergoing a major renovation, with the FieldTurf

being replaced.

“I think the teams with the most pitching are the ones that will come out of (the section),” Auteri said. “We’re just going to get the kids together and go. It’s a great job in terms of proximity for us. It’s nice that we’re going to Becton.”

The Golden Bears will have a host of pitchers, which should give them a fighting chance to move on to Yogi Berra Stadium. Auteri can call upon talented righty Adam Venezia, who won four games

“I think it’s all very disappointing,” Rusek said.

“Especially when you have to tell the seniors, then you’re starting off the season a little depressed. At this point, I think we’re all just hoping to have a season. I haven’t seen the kids since mid-March.

I really miss them. It would have been nice to see the kids during the summer. I wonder how the older kids are doing and how the new kids would be fitting in. It’s all been put on hold. It’s very tough.”

Tuero said that he planned on having a question-andanswer Zoom meeting online

with his parents and players sometime next week.

“We have to keep everyone informed,” Tuero said.

There have been rumors of postponing the fall schedule and moving it all to the spring.

“If we have to move it to the spring, then we’ll do it,” Tuero said. “We have to keep it all as positive as possible.

We have to be there for the kids.”

“If I’m going to be honest, that probably would be the best thing,” Andrews said about rescheduling to the spring. “My captains (Devin Navarez and Jack Cullen) have been running up the Belleville Turnpike three times a week. I’ve seen my guys on Veterans Field running around. The one good

thing about this situation is our seniors have had to focus, step up and be leaders.”

For now, this move just delays the start. That is, for now.

“Something has to be better than what we have now,” Johnson said. “I think my kids were in a very good place getting ready in March, in the weight room every day, then everything came to a halt.

Obituaries PAUL MCKENNA

Paul McKenna was born on the family farm in County Monaghan, Ireland, 84 years ago.

He died peacefully in his home on June 11, 2020.

Paul worked as a carpenter with Essex County Carpenter’s Local 1342 for over 50 years and worked in his own business “Homac” and retired as a master carpenter from Prudential Life Insurance Co., Newark.

Paul was predeceased by his parents James and Kathleen (McCann); brother Francis (Rita); sister Mary (Frank Meehan); sister-in-law Patricia Higgins (John Gilvey) and his baby boy born in March 1978.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Maureen (Higgins) and their three children: Cristin and husband Douglas and their two children Christianna and

Teresa; John Paul; Brian and wife Melissa (Clare) and their four children, Lainey, Jack, Lorelei and Evie Joy. Because of current restrictions, only the immediate family could bid him farewell.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Stephen’s Church in Kearny at a later date and interment of ashes will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Haverstraw, New York.

A celebration of Paul’s life will also take place at a later date when conditions allow.

The funeral home’s website will be updated to reflect the time and date.

Also surviving are his grandchildren Alyssa Marie and Joseph Michael along with many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Appellate court halts Grewal’s new police orders

n Appellate Court has put at least a temporary halt on Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal’s (seen in middle column photo) order for police departments throughout the state to release the names of cops who have gotten into trouble, and it’s music to the ears of the state’s largest police union.

In a statement released late last week, the union praised the court’s decision, calling it a “great first step.”

New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association President Patrick Colligan thanked the Appellate Division for granting the request by the State PBA and a number of other law enforcement unions for a stay of the attorney general’s directives requiring law enforcement agencies to release the names of law enforcement officers

who were issued major discipline since 2000.

Under the original attorney general’s general order, every state, county and local law enforcement agency in New Jersey would have been required to annually publish a list of officers who were fired, demoted or suspended from the force for more than five days for disciplinary violations. The first list was to be published no later than Dec. 31, 2020, though the NJ State Police said it would have released its list July 15.

Presently, the identities of officers subject to discipline have generally not been disclosed to the public unless they faced criminal charges.

The directives would have permitted law enforcement agencies to go further and identify officers who committed serious disciplinary violations in the past.

The NJSP’s list would have covered offenses back to 2000. Col. Patrick Callahan, seen in photo to the right, the superintendent of the NJSP, appeared to be in favor of releasing the names, based on statements he made in June.

Deo was arrested and charged on a warrant with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. He was later remanded to the Hudson County Jail, South Kearny.

On July 3, Officer Anthony Nunez took a report from the building manager of the Copestone Temple on Kearny Avenue who alleged that Stephen McCourt, 59, of Kearny, has repeatedly trespassed and defecated in the alleyway next to the building.

In some cases, McCourt reportedly had become argumentative with lodge members who interrupted him during his morning constitutionals.

On July 5 at 10:05 a.m., Officer Ryan Stickno saw McCourt sitting outside a bakery on Kearny Avenue.

McCourt was taken into custody on a $500 drunken-driving warrant issued by Mahwah court. After further investigation, Det. Jonathan Dowie issued McCourt a summons for defiant trespass relating to a July 2 incident, when he allegedly went into the Copestone alley in disregard of a posted no trespassing sign.

Mahwah later ordered McCourt released on his own recognizance with a new court date; therefore, he was sent on his way with an admonishment to take his “business” elsewhere.

On July 7, Americo Flores, 54, of Newark, accompanied by his attorney, surrendered himself to Det. Dan Esteves at Kearny Police Headquarters. Flores was wanted on an arrest warrant charging the first

degree crime of arson for hire, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:17-1d; and the second degree crime of conspiracy, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2. These charges stemmed from a May 9 fire on a boat at the Passaic River Yacht Club in South Kearny.

On July 7 at 10:44 p.m., several officers converged at the area of Highland and Woodland avenues on a report of a man trying car door handles on parked cars. Det. Neil Nelson reviewed town surveillance cameras while officers were en route and located the described suspect, also confirming that he had tried to enter at least two parked vehicles.

Officer Anthony Oliveira quickly located the suspect, Efraim A. Medina, 37, of Kearny, on the 100 block of Highland Avenue. While Medina reportedly paced back-andforth trying to explain how he’d told the officer that he lives in Newark and Kearny simultaneously, Officer Oliveira heard an excessive amount of coins jingling in Medina’s pocket, later totaled at $4.54 in change.

After further investigation, the officers identified Medina as the suspect who had allegedly entered the parked cars. Medina was arrested on charges of burglary, theft and three counts of criminal attempt (burglary).

He was also wanted on a $200 Newark assault warrant, a $600 Kearny hindering-apprehension warrant and a $200 Kearny town ordinance violation warrant.

Medina was then sent to the county jail.

Continued from Page 3 stunning story that made statewide headlines. It involved three Nutley students who reportedly used Snapchat to air a video that used incendiary language, more specifically, the “N-word.”

The Nutley Police Department announced earlier during the first week of January that it was advised that several girls posted a video with unacceptable language using racial epithets throughout social media, which immediately went viral.

Nutley police, along with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, reviewed the video and the nature of its recording and deemed it “completely inappropriate and in poor judgment;” however, no crime was committed.

The Observer reviewed the video, which is believed to have originally been on Snapchat and then recorded for use on other social media platforms — and it’s as bad as police described. It features three highschool aged girls, all of whom are white. A source with knowledge of the case told The Observer all three

girls were 14 and freshmen at Nutley High School.

“I hate ni***rs,” one girl says to start the video off. “We hate ni***rs,” a second girl then says. “I love them, I love them,” the second girl then says with some inaudible talking ongoing in the background. “I’m not kidding,” the first girl then says. A third girl then says, “No, no kidding, because ni***rs fu****g s**k d**k.”

The girls in the video all appear to be holding beverages, though it’s impossible to tell whether they’re alcoholic beverages. Reports indicated the incident took place at a party for the new year.

All those in contact with the resident during those two days were notified and are being monitored.

The nursing, at that time, began restricting visitors to the facility and followed NJ Department of Health requirements.

The daughter of the woman who is infected — whose name we are not releasing at this time — said her mother either contracted the virus between Feb. 25 and March 3, when she was admitted to Clara Maass Medical Center or thereafter, somehow, when she returned to the nursing home. The woman’s daughter said her mother was being kept, in isolation, at Clara Maass.

Additionally, a student who resides in Paterson, but who attends a daycare on Highland Avenue, also tested positive for COVID-19, according to the town. That student was taken out of school on March 9, before the student exhibited any symptoms of the disease. The student’s classmates are at low risk for

contracting the disease and will be monitored for signs and symptoms of COVID-19, the Kearny Health Department says.

Around the same time, the township of Belleville announced Clara Maass was treating four patients for the Coronavirus. Two were residents of Belleville.

1) 288 cases, 8 total COVID-19 deaths, in Kearny The most-read story on The Observer’s website in the first six months of the year was a simple one-paragraph announcement from the Kearny Health Department on April 8.

It read: The Town of Kearny now has a total of 288 reported cases of COVID-19, with a total of 8 fatalities, according to the town’s Health Department. There were 13 new cases reported on Tuesday, April 7.

As of Monday, July 13, the day this story went to press, Kearny’s COVID-19 statistics include 1,259 known cases, 92 deaths and 813 known recoveries.

The last known death in town was reported June 24. Since July began, there have only been nine new cases reported. There were seven reported deaths in June.
