Kearny 7-Eleven owners give away $20K in groceries

T

hey came from near and far.

Their ethnicity didn’t matter one bit.

No one asked about their socio-economic background.

The line to get in reached as far as Devon Street and the Belleville Turnpike at times, three blocks away.

And everyone who pulled into the 7-Eleven parking lot at the Pike and Schuyler Avenue was given a large, free bag of groceries, all courtesy of the three brothers who own the place.

Saied, one of the three, says he and his brothers, who operate several 7-Eleven franchises, spent $20,000 in their personal cash, along with donations from 7-Eleven corporate, to put on the event here in Kearny and at one of their locations on Long Island. He says they wanted to wait a while since there had been numerous other events with

food giveaways.

“We knew we wanted to do something, we had to do something,” Saied says. “This is a great community and we wanted to give back to the people who have allowed us to be successful here in Kearny. So many people are hurting because of the pandemic. It’s been horrible to witness.”

Indeed it has. But it certainly wasn’t horrible to see so many pleased people.

LYNDHURST PD GOES BACK TO

S

omething old is new again at the Lyndhurst Police Department.

Bike patrols, which became very popular in the late 1990s in an era where communityoriented policing began to rise in popularity, have returned to the department — and the squad is already up and running under the direction of Lt. Paul Haggerty.

The Observer met with Haggerty, Lt. Vincent Auteri, public-information officer, and Sgt. Steve Passamano, a member of the unit, on a Zoom call Friday, June 12, to learn about how the new unit works. And it appears they’ll be out and about a lot, especially now in the warmer months and with more people being outside with COVID-19 restrictions having been lifted.

The return to the bikes isn’t something that just happens with a chat and the snap of a finger.

Some members of the unit have already been taking part in the annual Police Unit Tour to remember the lives of police officers lost on Sept. 11, 2001. So they’re no strangers to riding. There’s an extensive, 40-hour training program that takes place at the State Police Academy, Sea Girt, that is required of any officer who transitions from a patrol car to a bicycle.

And, it was a work-inprogress.

“We’ve been talking about it for years,” Haggerty said.

“This just happened to be the right time due to the fact that people were stuck in their houses, and we wanted to get back in touch with the community again, more Continued on the next page

Haggerty says that with social distancing necessary — and with parks, etc., reopening — this was the time to get going. He also says this was all brought about prior to the death of George Floyd under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer on May 25.

The department, therefore, went out, purchased two new bikes (in addition to a few already on hand.) The unit will consist of six officers — the aforementioned Haggerty and Passamano, plus Officers Michael LeStrange, Michael Clifford, Richard Jasinski and Michael Keane.

The guys will rotate shifts.

Passamano says he’ll be out there three days a week. And, once the academy reopens, more officers will be given the opportunity to take the training to join the unit down the line. Most of the guys already trained did so about five years ago, in anticipation of this squad’s resurrection.

You’ll find them at schools interacting with kids, at parks interacting with anyone willing, at shopping centers, ceremonies and street fairs (when they return) — and they even handle medical calls. They’ll also do bike inspections to ensure kids wear the proper gear — think helmets — whilst riding. The bikes allow the officers to get to scenes quickly and to handle calls more efficiently.

“It’s really important to be connected with our commu-

nity,” Passamano said. “It’s important to be seen. Right now, people want comfort when they see what’s going on (nationally). We were taking photos in the park with kids that were graduating — from Kearny. So we’ll be out there with the community, being visible, positive.

Haggerty concurs.

“Bike patrol offers a lot of, I guess you’d say, selling points,” he said. “You can be covert, stealth — the bikes are silent. You come up upon a crowd, people don’t even know you’re behind them. On the flip side, it offers a softer uniform.”

Members wear royal blue shirt and shorts, described as a “more approachable uniform.” Officers still wear full tactical gear, including bullet-proof vests and gun belts, but the more casual look allows citizens to feel more comfortable approaching officers, Haggerty says.

And, despite what’s happening with departments across the country, following the death of Mr. Floyd, Haggerty says Lyndhurst is fortunate.

“What’s going on around the world isn’t happening here,” Haggerty said. “We all see the bigger picture and that’s what we’ve said about our township, it’s just a great community. I think we’re already ahead of that curve (in terms of anticipated police reform.) We’re an accredited agency and we hold ourselves to a higher standard.”

bike unit attended was a peaceful prayer service that took place in the parking lot of Church Alive (King’s Court) a few weeks back. A parishioner at the church told The Observer she was happy to see them there, especially given what had been happen-

ing across the country.

“They were great,” she said. “They were visible and interacted with the crowd. It was good to see.”

In all, the unit is going to do great things in the coming months and years, Auteri believes.

“We have the full support of Mayor Robert B. Giangeruso and Chief Richard Jarvis,” Auteri said. “They’ve been great throughout the entire process. And having their backing was vitally important to getting the Bike Unit back up and running.”

After 3-month hiatus, Masses start to return Stringent precautions have been taken to keep worshippers healthy

hile every person has no doubt been affected in some form by the Coronavirus, it’s certainly not a stretch to say churches have been hit particularly hard. It’s been months since communities of faith have been able to worship, in person.

And let’s face it — while the streaming of Masses and services is a nice alternative, there’s nothing like being in church, as a community. And for Catholics, whose liturgy is built around reception of the Body and Blood of Jesus in Holy Communion, it’s been even more of a challenge.

But things have started to change for the better.

Last week, Cardinal Joseph Tobin reopened Catholic churches to weekday Masses — and funerals, baptisms and weddings — with limitations.

Up to 50 worshippers, or 25% of capacity, may attend Mass weekdays. All must wear masks. Seating will be socially distant, with every other pew roped off. Weekend Masses won’t be allowed until next Sunday. And each pastor is required to ensure policies are strictly followed.

And, the cardinal’s dispensation still remains in effect — the faithful are not required to attend Mass at all.

For now.

The Observer spoke with two local pastors — the Rev. Michael Donovan of Queen of Peace Church, North Arlington and the Rev. Joseph Mancini of St. Stephen’s Church, Kearny.

So far, the response to the reopening has gone well, the two pastors say.

Father Mike says Queen of Peace is having two weekday Masses for now — at 7:30 and 9 a.m. — and the church is livestreaming a Mass at 8:30 a.m. He’s happy to have people back in the physical church, he says.

“Not having live Masses has been strange and I know our parishioners have greatly missed not receiving the

Eucharist,” Father Mike says.

“It was good to see the regular faces back in church and celebrating their faith. Anyone who claims attending church is not an essential service does not fully appreciate the centrality of faith in a person’s life. For many, it is as important as life itself.”

Indeed. And for three months — it seems like it was longer than that — livestreaming was it. So it should be no surprise attendance at the Masses last week was solid.

“We have had good numbers, especially the 7:30 Mass,” Father Mike says. “I believe some are still a bit concerned about going out in public and we are still getting good numbers for our live-streamed Mass.”

And so far, with all the regulations in place, things have gone well.

In a departure from the norm of a priest of extraordinary minister of Holy Communion handing the Body of Christ to those receiving, Father Mike has taken a different approach, one often utilized in Protestant churches, but almost never in a Catholic church.

“Everything went very well.

Since we opened for private prayer and then Masses this week, I have not had to tell anyone regarding social distancing or wearing masks,” Father Mike says. “Most Christians tend to be obedient through practice and learning their faith and following church rules and regulations.

“We are placing hosts in small paper cups and placing the cups on trays. Everyone comes up single file, wearing masks and social distancing.

They take a cup off the tray, step to the side, consume the host and then place the empty cup in a refuse basket and return to their seats using the side aisles. It works well.”

Now if anyone is worried about leaving home, Father Mike says he’s taken universal precautions to ensure everyone’s safety. And it doesn’t hurt that QP Church, the building, is immense.

Wednesday, June 24, 2020 Continued from previous page “Our church is very large and we have taped off every other pew,” Father Mike says. “We can fit 200 people in church maintaining at least 7 feet distance apart. It is a safe environment and we are cleaning the inside of the church regularly.

It is as safe as any place away from home.”

Perhaps the most difficult aspect of the church closures the last few months — coupled with so many tragic deaths caused by COVID-19 — was that survivors couldn’t mourn. There were no wakes.

There were no funeral liturgies. Graveside services were limited. Now, there could be an influx of memorial Masses for those who have already died. Father Mike and QP are prepared.

“We had a funeral Mass on Tuesday,” Father Mike says.

“Approximately 45 people and everything worked out well. The pandemic has really affected grieving families very strongly. Not being able to grieve together, to physical comfort one another must have been very difficult and hindered the grief and healing process.”

But that should all change now.

A few miles to the south at St. Stephen’s, it’s quite the same there, according to Father Joe. “The past few weeks and months were, to be sure, challenging on so many levels,” Father Joe says. “For close to three months, including the grand liturgies of Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter Sunday, the priest said Mass either privately or through livestream capability. To be able to offer Mass in front of a congregation, physically present in the

The Observer | www.theobserver.com church, was a great joy. That’s not to say that livestream Mass was not joyful — we tried the best we could — but the importance of being present in church takes precedence over any other type of participation, unless one is sick or confined to their home.”

Like at QP, St. Stephen’s has seen a nice number of parishioner coming to the weekday liturgies. And those there have dealt with social-distancing measures quite well.

“We have averaged 35 people at our daily Masses thus far,” Father Joe says. “Following the directives of Gov. (Philip D.) Murphy, along with those of the Archdiocese of Newark, we are limited to 50 total people in the church at this time. The attendance at daily Mass is in line with the numbers we would have under normal circumstances and in the summer.”

“Those who come to Mass are required to wear a face mask at all times while inside and to maintain a minimum of six feet from others,” Father Joe says. “Those who live in the same residence may sit closer together. So far, things have gone well on all fronts. We will, when necessary, keep our air conditioning on in the church so that it’s not too uncomfortable in the summer heat with a mask on. It should be noted that the priest is not masked when offering the Mass but only when he is distributing Holy Communion to the faithful. Even then, those who come forward to receive must keep their mask on until the host is placed in their hands, step to the side, raise the mask and consume the Eucharist.”

Parishioners have been asked to receive in the hand — and not on the tongue — for now.

process has been well orchestrated — and all are following the guidelines.

As for those who might be worried about getting sick at church, Father Joe, like Father Mike, says worshippers should feel confident every step is being taken to keep St. Stephen’s Church well-sanitzed and virus-free.

“Personal health and safety are the most important things right now. A close second is the common good. Anyone who is unsure, nervous or worried about coming to Mass is not required or expected to do so. Cardinal (Joseph W.) Tobin continues to dispense the Catholic faithful from the Sunday Mass obligation as well as the Easter Duty (the precept that all Catholics should receive Holy Communion at least once during the Easter season) until further notice.

“To those who are unsure, it may be best to stay home. However, and this needs to be said, if individuals or families are resuming normal activities and

leisure in public and simply using the Coronavirus as an excuse to not come to Mass, then some priorities need to be set. The church is no less safe and clean than a supermarket, restaurant or other place. The church is more essential than some of those places as well.”

Speaking of essential activities, Father Joe also addressed the return of funerals, baptisms and weddings.

“Since the closure of the church, we have had approximately 22 burials without a funeral Mass or wake<” he says. “Over the next few weeks, in addition to making up our canceled First Holy Communions and Confirmation, we will be reaching out to the families who had to bury a loved one without the benefit of a funeral Mass.

“On a personal note, my own grandfather passed away in late May age 100. We, too, were limited in those who could attend the burial; it was interesting for me to be on the side of the mourner as opposed to the

clergy. We will work with each family who wishes to schedule a Mass for their loved one in the presence of family and friends. Many of the weddings that were canceled during the months of closure had already rescheduled, either to later this year or in 2021. We will also work with the families of infants who need to be baptized.”

In all, Father Joe is happy things are returning to normal and he looks to what lies ahead — especially with the imminent return to Sunday worship.

“Our parish will have a video on our Facebook page and YouTube channel explaining the procedures for returning to Sunday Mass, effective June 28,” Father Joe says. “I should note that our regular Saturday, 5 p.m. Mass will not resume until July 11. We also ask the cooperation of our parishioners to be informed of the directives we have to implement and follow — they are all created to ensure the health and safety of all who come to worship with us.”

Being witness to a Kearny cop’s epic act of human compassion

n June 18, 2020, I witnessed something I wish I had recorded. I wish everyone in the world had seen this moment. Especially given the state of the our planet these days.

I’d just finished up in the office and I was heading to pick up lunch at at the Greeks, at around 2:15 p.m. I made way east down Seeley Avenue and waited for a traffic light at Elm Street (no turn on red until 4 p.m.)

Making a right turn onto Elm in the opposite direction was the Kearny Police radio car that had been controlling traffic at the 7-11 food giveaway earlier that day. The owners gave away 500 bags of groceries to those who came — no questions asked.

The vehicle turned slowly because I can only believe the two officers in it eyed a man, around 30, Black, crossing Seeley with a little girl holding his hand. She must have been 3. Perhaps she was even younger.

The man kept looking back out of the corner of his eye. I could sense he was — suspicious — to say the least.

One of the officers, I think it was Vic Girdwood, gets out of the SUV and says, loudly, “Sir, did you get groceries today at 7-11?” He had to say it twice.

The man and his little girl turned around, slowly, walked over to the vehicle, and as the officer opened the trunk, he handed him some of the leftover grocery bags.

This was one of the single greatest acts of kindness I have ever seen in 45 years on this planet.

It reminded me again why we are so blessed to have the PD we have. And if ever there was a doubt that all police officers are like the ones in Minneapolis, this was an epic example of how that just is not reality — just 23 days after the world stopped caring about the police.

Did the man crossing the street have worry in his eyes?

I am certain he did.

Was there even a second in my mind that he needed to worry?

No. Not for even a second.

Because we live in a special community — one where we take care of each other on a daily basis.

I sincerely mean it when I say this was the singlegreatest example of kindness that I have ever seen. I wish you could have seen it, too. It was something I will never forget for as long as I live. And I would be remiss if I didn’t share this, right here, for everyone to read.

Talk about being in the right place at the right time.

Had I left 15 seconds earlier — or later — from the office, I wouldn’t have been a witness to an incredible act of compassion. No one would have, likely, seen it.

But I am damn glad I did.

A remembrance for a Belleville hero On Flag Day. June 14, the Belleville Historical Society visited the gravesite and set a flag in honor of Civil War Sgt. Decatur Dorsey who served as the flag carrier for the 39th U.S. Colored Infantry Regiment. Sgt. Dorsey was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism at the Battle of the Crater in Virginia on July 30, 1864. He was the third Black American soldier to be awarded our country’s highest military honor. The epic battle was depicted in the 2003 movie, ‘Cold Mountain.’ In the photo here, Belleville Historical Society member Roger Barnes, a U.S. Army veteran, sets the colors at Dorsey’s final resting place.

They can only see a solution

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR in a bureaucratic boondoggle.

They care nothing about small businesses. They’re only trying to extract every dime in revenue they can.

Exploring new solutions is required in these difficult times. Sadly, this inept town government is not up to this task. Photo ops are nice Mayor Santos, but they do not help reopen Kearny.

Writer: I agree with Observer editorial To the Editor: Once again, I concur with your editorial concerning outdoor dining in our communities. (June 17, 2020.)

North Arlington and Belleville and surrounding towns are trying to make it easy on all business owners.

These people pay taxes and serve our residents, and many are hurting so bad that they will lose their income source.

State and local politicians should not impede them in their right to earn a living!

I frankly am saddened by the actions of Kearny in lengthening a process which should be much quicker.

These are not normal times but a true emergency. If people lose businesses, the taxes they pay will be transferred to the residents. Help them don’t hinder their right to

GAP What a long, strange ride 2020 has been

W

hat a school year this has been!

It has definitely one for the books.

Now that I am a junior in high school, soon to be a senior, a lot has changed and a lot continues to change.

Junior year means we are just one step closer to becoming adults. That year is a pivotal point in students’ lives because that is when we begin looking at colleges of interest, start researching possible careers (if we haven’t done so already), prepare for AP testing, the SATs for some, and for others, preparing to take that first road test that many have been waiting for.

All of these factors are what makes this year the most important, exciting and stressful all at the same time.

The 2019-2020 school year started off great and everything seemed to fall into place. With that being said, nobody would have ever expected the school year would be cut short and that March 13, 2020, would be the last time we would step foot in the school building for a very very long time.

It was a surreal moment when we were told we would have two weeks off from school, but I don’t think anyone fully grasped what was actually happening.

Nobody fully understood the seriousness of the new health emergency until the news started covering it, when the businesses and parks started to close due to the local governments declaring a state of emergency and when wearing masks became the new norm.

Most people in the country and world have been affect-

ed by these unprecedented events due to the pandemic.

All of these new changes suddenly came and some people didn’t know how to respond.

Then, two weeks passed by —then a month, then two months, and now it is going on three. Remote learning took place and students and teachers had to adapt quite quickly. At first, it was supposed to last about two weeks, but as the situation became worse everywhere, there was no chance of that coming to fruition.

Many students, including me, were upset we were going to be missing many events that would have shaped our high school memories. We were truly looking forward to these cherished moments and making more memories that we would hold with us for a very long time.

However, those memories would have to be made virtually.

For the elementary school

students, middle school students, high school students and even college students, it was hard for some and easy for others. It has definitely been an immense adjustment having to learn online rather than in the classroom. Having done this for 13 weeks, I have gotten used to it though and I know teachers and counselors are doing their very best to help their students in every way possible.

For that I am extremely grateful. Let’s not forget during these difficult times to give thanks to the first responders, healthcare workers and all other essential workers for their service and dedication.

Despite these ever-changing circumstances one can’t help but think better days are ahead. That’s really all we can do — hope.

Hope for the future and hope that everything will go back to normal one day. But the reality is life as we know

The hustle and bustle of shoppers and diners have begun to fill Belleville’s streets once again.

It’s a welcome sight for small-business owners like Frank Duaksis.

“We are very excited to have outdoor dining on our patio,” said Duaksis, owner of a restaurant on Joralemon Street. “We have enough seating for about 15 tables or 60 people. In the front of the restaurant, we’re going to have a bar-like atmosphere where people can walk up and order their drinks and have a seat.”

Belleville, and the rest of New Jersey, is taking the next step on the road to re-opening.

With new cases of COVID-19 dropping in Jersey and the capacity for testing and contact tracing continuing to expand, Belleville is welcoming back customers to non-essential retail stores and diners hungry for an outdoor experience.

Among other restrictions, restaurants will be required to keep tables at least six feet apart with no more than eight customers at a table. Expect to see plastic shielding erected in areas such as cash registers and bars.

Non-essential businesses will have their own set of guidelines designed to maintain social distancing.

For instance, workers will still be required to wear face coverings and floor markings will keep customers six feet apart near registers.

Mayor Michael Melham and Deputy Mayor Vinny Cozzarelli — both Belleville small-business owners — helped launch the Belleville Economic Stimulus Taskforce (BEST) at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

By bringing together for the first time members of the township’s business community, BEST hosts virtual meetings where business owners have shared information and business strategies as social distancing measures are slowly lifted.

BEST also helped Belleville’s business owners pivot as Gov. Philip D. Murphy continues to relax some of his executive orders.

For instance, at the behest of some restaurant owners, the Township Council recently relaxed some outdoor dining seating restriction.

Similarly, the council waived some municipal fees in an attempt to encourage businesses to host sidewalk sales.

“We have been diligent in supplying our business owners with the most up-todate information coming out of Trenton,” Melham said.

“For instance, when the New Jersey Economic Development Authority announced last week that it was making $45 million available in its Small Business Emergency Assistance Grant Program, we immediately alerted Belleville’s business owners.”

Harrison’s Hicks posts great recruiting numbers as AIC assistant grid coach When Danny Hicks left Harrison High School last year for a chance to be an assistant football coach on the college level at American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts, he had no idea what was in store for him.

After all, Hicks was still under 30 and a brand new college football coach. He still had so much to learn about the game of college football, especially the recruiting side of the sport. Hicks had to be the one to sell his program to prospective college football players, telling them why they should choose AIC over other schools like it.

Before Hicks could even settle into his own digs in Springfield, getting to know the lay of the land and getting to visit the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (yes, it’s there), Hicks had to inherit the recruiting duties of his old home area – namely recruiting the New Jersey players.

“Everyone knows about the big-time schools like St. Peter’s Prep, Bergen Catholic, St. Joseph’s and Don Bosco Prep,” Hicks said. “But not a lot of guys know much about the other schools in New Jersey.

Everyone would love to have a relationship with all the coaches in north Jersey

football. I think I already have a relationship.”

So Hicks used his vast amount of contacts and friendships in the coaching profession in his home state to get in the door with the prospective college football players.

“Having all these relationships from the area really helped me,” Hicks said. “It’s made things easier. I tell the parents and the players, ‘Hey, I’m from Harrison,’ and their eyes grow wide.”

The results have been staggering.

Of the 2020 recruiting class (AIC Class of 2023), Hicks has received commitment from a whopping 24 players from northern New Jersey.

That’s 24 of the total 53 players – almost half of the entire incoming class will be from the Garden State and the majority of those will be from the northern portion of the state.

“It’s been awesome,” Hicks said. “It really has worked out perfect.”

Hicks said that before he ever walked onto the campus at AIC, he reached out to Dave McCarthy of Lyndhurst, who now solely runs the McCarthy Report, the premier scouting tout service in the Garden State.

Nutley’s Harbison working with QB guru to improve his skills

JERSEY CITY – Matt Harbison doesn’t need to be a fortune teller, a few tea leaves. a tarot card reader or a registered soothsayer to know what the future holds for him as a football player.

But the soon-to-be Nutley High School junior realizes that he stands to be the starter on the Maroon Raiders’ grid team this fall – if and when there is a season.

And if that’s the case, then Harbison has to fully prepare to be the guy who will replace two-year starter Justin Lucia calling the signals for the Maroon Raiders.

So Harbison started to look around for someone who could make him into a better quarterback.

Lamar McKnight is a Jersey City native who played quarterback at Lincoln High School in Jersey City, had a fine JUCO stint at Contra Costa Junior College in California, then went to Tennessee State and ended his playing career at Adams State in Colorado.

Talk about well traveled.

Since graduating from Adams State and getting a couple of looks from some pro teams, McKnight went into coaching, now serving as the offensive coordinator at Union City High School.

But McKnight has also started a venture called the Lamar McKnight Quarterback Academy, where he trains with some up and coming signal callers from all over the East Coast, but especially in his home state of New Jersey.

It didn’t matter if Harbison had to make the journey east to Jersey City to work with McKnight. He was going.

“I heard a lot about him,” Harbison said. “Right before the quarantine (for the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic), I was asking around about quarterback training. I called Lamar and got what he’s all about. That’s how it all started for me.”

And Harbison will get the chance to play for veteran head coach Steve DiGregorio, who will return to the Nutley sideline this fall after having to sit out last season to battle cancer.

Seeing that the opportunity is there for Harbison to be the starter under center, there were a handful of changes that Harbison had to make in his game – and McKnight was the man to do it.

“I had to become better all around,” Harbison said. “I had to work on my footwork. I had to be able to move in and out of the pocket and still be able to throw. Lamar works a lot with pocket movement. It’s what I needed the most. It’s perfect that we found him.”

Harbison was always blessed with a powerful right arm – too bad he doesn’t play baseball

anymore, or Dad would have had him on the mound – but McKnight worked on a few things with Harbison to improve his throwing.

“There were all kinds of stuff,” Harbison said. “He made some small adjustments in my arm angle, like holding my elbow higher. I definitely felt like I needed work. Lamar pointed out all the things I could improve on. I knew I had to get my feet quicker. I don’t necessarily have to try to get faster. That might be hard at this point. But I needed to improve getting my feet quicker.”

Although the training sometimes gets strenuous, Harbison feels it is all for the better.

“I think Lamar is incredible,” Harbison said. “Between Lamar and Coach DiGregorio, I should be in good hands. I’ll do whatever Coach DiGregorio says, but when it comes to the personal stuff, I have Lamar. He’s been a great mentor. I can definitely see the improvement in myself.”

McKnight can see the improvement in Harbison as well.

“With the quarantine, I felt a little lazy,” Harbison said. “Now it’s easier to get out. When I was home alone, I was trying to figure out what I could do on my own. Now I have a better schedule.”

Harbison likes training with the other top quarterbacks in the workouts.

“I definitely have a lot of confidence in myself,” Harbison said. “I’ve been watching the other guys and what they do.

I’m looking at ways than I can improve. I have a ton of respect for the other guys I train with. I can learn from them all.”

Last week, Harbison was working out with Zamar Wise of Barringer, who recently signed a national letter of intent to play football at the University of Massachusetts in the fall.

And as for McKnight’s tutelage?

“The one thing I noticed in him is that he’s never tired,” Harbison said. “He’s always the same with a good attitude and positive thinking. That’s what pushes me. I see someone who is so excited about the game. It makes me feel the same way.”

Harbison doesn’t want to think about the possibility of not playing this fall.

“Of course, it will be frustrating if we don’t play,” Harbison said. “But I have to make sure like we are playing. I’m willing to do whatever helps the team win. That’s what it’s all about.”

Jahir White, a speed demon from Hudson Catholic, will have a multitude of positions for the Yellow Jackets, as a slot receiver, as a third-down back and as a defensive back. But maybe White’s best position may be as a kick returner.

“He’s coming in to us as an athlete,” Hicks said. “I don’t know what his best position is, but he can fly. I think he’ll find himself on the offensive side of the ball.”

Needless to say, Hicks is pleased with his first recruiting batch, one that had his home state as a preference.

“There’s just so much talent here,” Hicks said. “We made it our Twitter handle, #JerseyJuice. Every time a kid commits, it’s a big thing for us.”

It’s a real big thing when you get almost half of your recruiting class from one state. Not a bad first year at all for a kid from Harrison Gardens.

e’re still in the middle of a pandemic, but one new Eagle Scout in Troop 305 continues to be a Man for Others, thanks to his project that benefited the Kearny Fire Department.

John Dec, a 16-year old Life Scout, Patrol Leader of Unit 305 and Kearny rising senior at High Tech High School, designed his Eagle Project to benefit the firefighters at the Midland Avenue firehouse — main headquarters — in Kearny.

Dec was assisted by his fellow Scouts and leaders of Troop 305 to deliver a heavy, custom-built table for the dining room on Thursday, June 18.

Kearny Fire Chief Steve Dyl, Deputy Chief Edward Agnew and several firefighters were on hand to gratefully accepted Dec’s table, and the thanked him for working with the department as the beneficiary of his project.

Councilwoman Eileen Eckel, the town council’s long-time fire committee chairwoman, extended her appreciation on the phone.

Deputy Chief Agnew had consulted with Dec during the planning phase and informed him of the significance of the KFD’s unique emblem — and how it plays a prominent role in the identification and honor associated with the department that has served the Arlington and later Kearny community since 1880 (first as a volunteer organization, then as a career department beginning in 1921.)

The legs of the table were constructed of pipes and fittings, wrapped with hoses used by Kearny’s bravest.

The customized dining table was part of Dec’s larger project to revitalize the dining space where the firefighters eat and reenergize in-between service calls.

In a year-long effort, Dec organized the facelift of the communal dining space.

The community service work also included painting the kitchen and replacing the well-worn floor.

Dec realized his Eagle Project would not be complete without providing a new dining table and chairs. As the shifts change, the remainder of the firefighters on Midland Avenue will be able to dine at Dec’s one-of-a-kind table for years to come.

Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is one of the most challenging aspects of Scouting. Approximately 4% of all Scouts merit this recognition. In addition to earning a minimum of 21 merit badges, including 13 required ones, Scouts must complete an extensive community service project that benefits an organization other than the Boy Scouts of America.

The Eagle candidate is expected to plan, fund raise, secure materials and oversee the execution of a completed project, including managing Scout leaders and fellow Scouts in leadership activities throughout the endeavor.

They’d first line up on the Pike.

Then, they’d be handed a ticket from a volunteer corporate officer. Once pulling into the parking lot from the pike, they’d hand the ticket to Saied, or an employee of the Kearny branch, who then directed drivers to pull over to a might pile of grocery bags.

They’d be handed a bugling bag of groceries, which had plenty to eat and drink. And that was it. They’d drive off via the Schuyler Avenue exit.

No one was asked if they were unemployed. No one was asked their residency. There was an honor system but it didn’t matter — because the brothers just wanted to do some local good.

And they accomplished that.

“II come here for coffee and a roll every day — and it doesn’t matter who is working at the counter, everyone is just so nice, every time,” a Kearny woman who asked her name not be used, said. “Moe is my favorite.

He works so hard. And it’s not always easy for him to get around. What a guy.”

Because of the expected large crowd, which caused some traffic at the noontime event on Friday, June.

Wednesday, June 24, 2020 18, the Kearny Police Department was on hand, near Forest Street, to help control traffic. Passers-by were asked if they were there for the event — and if they were, they were sent to the right-most lane to continue to line up.

If they were just driving through, they were directed left — and it was on to the traffic light at Schuyler. Given how many people were in the area, it was really well directed. The traffic flowed nicely. Everyone seemed to take it all in stride.

Including Gary Mika, a short-order cook who was heading to a nearby pharmacy, when he learnt of the special 7-Eleven event.

“I was going to pick up son’s my son medications, when I saw line,” the line, Mika says.

“I asked the officer what was

happening here, and he told me, so I got on the line. For my family, these last few months have been a struggle.

I’ve been out of work, just got unemployment after waiting for weeks. This will help us for a few days hopefully. I don’t usually come to this 7-Eleven, but I will from now on. I can tell you that.”

NAHS athletics earn special professionaldevelopment accreditation North Arlington High School has earned Level 1 status in the National Federation of State High School Associations’ School Honor Roll.

The newly instituted NFHS School Honor Roll is a national recognition program designed to promote professional development for high school coaches by completing online education courses through the NFHS Learning Center (www.NFHSLearn.com).

By earning Level 1 status, more than 90% of coaches at NAHS completed the core course “Fundamentals of Coaching” along with three of the center’s most significant courses — “Concussion in Sports,” “Sudden Cardiac Arrest” and “Protecting Students from Abuse.”

Schools may earn Level 2 status (and a Level 2 banner) on the NFHS School Honor Roll when more than 90% of paid coaches complete courses that pertain specifically to sports they coach, along with “First Aid, Health and Safety,” “Heat Illness Prevention” and “Student Mental Health and Suicide Prevention.”

A Level 3 banner is awarded for schools that reach 90% completion for the “Sportsmanship,” “Strength and Conditioning,” “Teaching and Modeling Behavior,” “Engaging Effectively with Parents” and “Bullying, Hazing and Inappropriate Behaviors” courses.
