Lyndhurst police nab man wanted in Virginia: Auteri

A

Passaic County man wanted by authorities in Smyth County, Virginia, for a drug deal gone wrong (and robbery charges) was taken into custody

Sunday, June 7, at the Winslow Motel by the Lyndhurst Police Department, Det. Lt. Vincent Auteri, the LPD’s public-information officer told The Observer.

The suspect, Andrew Wyble, 25, of Bloomingdale, New Jersey, surrendered peacefully to the Lyndhurst PD’s Hos-

tage Negotiation Team and Emergency Response Team after initially refusing to exit his motel room at the request of the officers who first responded, Auteri said.

Essex County’s annual summer concerts canceled because of COVID fears

T

he 2020 Essex County Summer Music Concert Series and Fireworks displays have been canceled because of the Coronavirus, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. announced last week.

“Our Summer Concert Series and Fireworks Spectaculars are much anticipated events that attract spectators from throughout Essex County and beyond.

They are an opportunity for us to bond as a community, enjoy an evening outdoors, and celebrate the birth of our nation and our freedoms. However, our battle against

the Coronavirus is far from over. In the abundance of caution, we have decided that canceling our concerts and fireworks displays are the best option to help keep our residents safe,” DiVincenzo said. “We look forward to next year when we can gather together again in the cool summer evenings and enjoy our favorite music in our beautiful parks.”

Essex County traditionally hosts three fireworks displays in Branch Brook and Weequahic Parks in Newark and Brookdale Park in Bloomfield/Montclair to celebrate Independence Day. In recent years, the summer concerts have included about 30 different events that have included a variety of music genres, cover bands and day-long festivals.

Emergency food distribution event slated for June 11

I

f you’re out of work and in need of food, and live in Essex County, there’s a short-term solution coming up this week.

County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. and the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders will present an emergency food distribution event 10 a.m., Thursday, June 11, at St. Matthew AME Church, 336 Oakwood Ave., in Orange to help families negatively impacted by the Coronavirus.

The 1,000 boxes of food that will be distributed are meant to benefit families who have been forced out of work and are not able to afford food.

“The Coronavirus has forced an enormous amount of people out of work and created food insecurity among residents who now have limited income or no income at all. We are pleased to present this emergency food distribution event to help those who are in dire need,” DiVincenzo said. “The Coronavirus has created uncertainty and unforeseen challenges for us all. We hope this emergency food distribution helps those families who are struggling.”

DiVincenzo, himself recovered from a bout with COVID-19, says additional emergency food distribution events will be scheduled on a weekly

basis.

Residents who wish to take advantage of this free giveaway should enter the parking lot by making a left turn from Oakwood Avenue.

Right turns from Oakwood Avenue will not be allowed.

Residents waiting to enter the site should line up in their vehicles along Essex County Monte Irvin Orange Park on the west side of Oakwood Avenue.

Vehicles should approach from Central Avenue. In addition, residents are asked to not arrive to the site until 8 a.m. Vehicles that arrive before 8 a.m. will be asked to leave. This is being done to allow for normal traffic flow through the area and prevent any traffic back-ups from being created.

The emergency food boxes contain enough food to provide about 40 meals.

They consist of a variety of non-perishable food such as oatmeal, rice, fruit, peanut butter, jelly, shelf stable milk and canned vegetables, chili, soup and ravioli.

Items may vary based upon their availability.

The emergency food boxes will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. When residents arrive at the site, they are being asked to keep their windows rolled up and to open their trunk. Volunteers will place one emergency food box into each vehicle.

This event will only provide boxes to those in cars. Buses are not permitted, nor are people on foot.

Woman, her cat, rescued in blaze by off-duty firefighter/ police lieutenant

he quick thinking of an off-duty volunteer Lyndhurst firefighter, who also happens to be a police lieutenant, helped to save the life of a woman and her cat, both of whom were trapped on the second floor of a burning building late last week, Lt. Vincent Auteri, the public-information officer of the Lyndhurst Police Department, said.

Here’s how it all went down, according to Auteri: At approximately 9:37 a.m., on Friday, June 5, 2020, Lyndhurst Police Officers Michael LeStrange, Brian Kapp and Anthony Giaquinto were first to respond to a report of a house fire at 124 Forest Ave. Upon their

arrival, they observed heavy black smoke emanating from numerous windows on each level of the multi-family dwelling.

They were also greeted curbside by a woman and her two young children, who had safely evacuated the first floor apartment. The officers then learned that the second floor was occupied and shortly thereafter, a female in distress appeared out of a second-floor window, informing officers she was unable to exit as a result of the dangerous smoke that had engulfed the building.

Belleville Mayor/Council issue statements

By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com The Mayor of Belleville (far-right column) and the entire council have issued statements on the tragic death of George Floyd and the ensuing protests.

“Our heavy hearts are not only with his loved ones, but with all those whose lives have been torn asunder by the scourge of racism,” Melham and the council said jointly. “Nobel Peace Prize recipient Desmond Tutu’s words have never rang truer than they do at this moment in history: ‘If you are neutral

in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.’”

The statement also pointed to Belleville’s diverse history.

“Belleville’s history is steeped in acceptance and tolerance dating hundreds of years,” they said. “This was a stronghold for antislavery forces in the 1800s, and many prominent Belleville residents stood at the forefront of the abolitionist movement.

“Decades later, Belleville welcomed, with open arms, an influx of Chinese immigrants even as antiChinese sentiment ran

rampant throughout the rest of the country. Even today, Belleville’s rich diversity is a source of pride, and we celebrate these myriad of heritages with flag raisings and cultural events.”

And, the mayor and council made it clear that they support the township’s police department — and that an event as which happened in Minneapolis could never happen here.

“Here in Belleville, we stand in support of our local Police Department,” the mayor and council said. “The men and women

in our police department work hard to develop and maintain relationships with our residents and business owners. In this, they are unmatched.

“We can proudly and confidently say that the sort of despicable behavior we saw in the final 8 minutes, 46 seconds of Mr. Floyd’s life would never occur in our township.

Police officers take a solemn oath to serve and protect their communities, and the overwhelming majority of them do it with integrity, compassion and valor.

“Although we are

outspoken in our condemnation of the few, we do not cast blame on the whole. Similarly, we support the impassioned yet peaceful protesters, but condemn those who engage in looting and violence.”

Banner honors KHS graduates

In solidarity with the police who serve our local communities

T

his is a tough time for law enforcement. Just a few weeks ago, people throughout the country were sending lunches, donuts (seriously) and other kinds of food and meals and posters to police who, so often, have been putting their lives on the line during a global pandemic.

The photos can be seen on a plethora of social media pages of the department that serve our readership.

Suddenly, however, those instances of good will and good cheer have come to a screeching halt. In fact, a source told us one man who donated masks to an area department a few weeks ago actually asked for them back and said he regretted giving them to police. How quickly things change.

We understand the absolute outrage caused by the death of George Floyd under the knee of a former Minneapolis police officer — and we condemn systematic racism and any police officer who would ever do what the man did to George Floyd. Effectively, he caused us all to witness an execution in our living rooms.

But with that said, we continue to stand with the women and men of the police departments that serve us.

Indeed, the action of four police officers in Minneapolis serves as a reminder of how bad things are in so many police departments across the country. But we see, almost daily, how our local departments act, how they serve, how they put their lives on the line every single second of every single day.

We see it when officers in Kearny go to senior centers several times a year to serve a catered lunch. We see it when North Arlington officers offer escorts to those entering Holy Cross Cemetery. We see it when Harrison officers dance with the elderly at the senior center. We see it when East Newark officers help to get food to those who can’t otherwise afford it.

We see it in the actions of Lyndhurst officers that led to the arrest and takedown of a man accused of attempted murder in Virginia. We see it when officers are on hand for a flag-raising ceremony in Belleville. We see it when officers in Nutley do their part to keep the peace after teens used incendiary language on social media.

We could go on here. Because fortunately, our departments are led and served by people who care — and who would never tolerate what happened in Minneapolis or any number of cities.

So today, we do stand with those who are angry over the death of Mr. Floyd. We are, too. But it is, indeed, possible to be angry while knowing at the same time, we are blessed to have police whose mission is always to help, never to hurt.

We pray this never, ever changes.

Up until now, I have had zero issues with the way the Kearny BOE has done things.

With the Covid-19 pandemic wreaking havoc on everything in our world, it was great to hear that graduations can take place starting July 6. My son is in the eighth-grade and we, his family, were happy that we would be able to have some sort of ceremony to mark this achievement.

Reading the article in The Observer about how the KHS graduation would take place

LETTER TO THE EDITOR was a somewhat of a relief to the many families I know who were looking forward to having their child receive diplomas. It would be nice to have the whole class graduate together or at least in two ceremonies. There is plenty of room at the football field.

Then, I read the very last paragraph.

I think it was a little dismissive calling it a mere “advancement.”

These eighth-graders have put in 10 years of learning to get to this point. As did the seniors, they missed out on a graduation trip, the signing of

the yearbooks, the socializing with their friends as the elders of the school, etc.

I believe, and I am positive I am not alone, that they deserve some kind of ceremony. If a ceremony can take place early in July, why can’t that happen? It should happen, for the seniors as well. I know we are in a very difficult time in our country with many issues going on at the same time. But, wouldn’t a celebration of our children’s hard work and dedication to school be a great way to change the tone of the day?

A respite from the world we are living in right now?

There is still time to make it happen.

Former Observer AOYs Higgins, McKenna reflect on lost college seasons

Former Observer AOY Pezzolla reflects on year at Monmouth It was shaping up to be the best year of Giulia Pezzolla’s young life.

Honored last year as The Observer Female Athlete of the Year after a brilliant career at Lyndhurst High School, starring in soccer and track and field, Pezzolla headed off to Monmouth University for the next chapter in her impressive athletic career.

Pezzolla signed a national letter of intent to run track at the West Long Branch institution.

Pezzolla’s freshman campaign started off without a hitch, participating in cross country in the fall.

“I trained hard for cross country,” Pezzolla said.

“But I knew that I really wasn’t going to run. It was more for training for indoor and outdoor. I ran in one meet, but I was unattached (not associated with Monmouth). I was basically just getting ready for indoor, but mostly focusing for outdoor.”

But training for the cross country team was a huge benefit for Pezzolla.

“I felt like I was building up my stamina and endurance,” Pezzolla said. “I was going out for runs every Friday morning at 6:30 a.m.

It was all very new to me, running distances like that.

We would run sometimes

to the beach, but mostly, it was around the track.

At first, I didn’t like it, but then I started to enjoy it. It was nice running to the beach. That was fun, mostly watching the sun rise. It was a whole new animal for me.”

Pezzolla was a standout middle distance runner for Lyndhurst and was planning to do the same for the Hawks in the winter and spring. But the distance training was part of the process.

“I adapted to it well,” Pezzolla said. “I could feel the difference. I can run a lot longer now.”

So when the indoor track and field season began in November, Pezzolla was ready.

“I felt really strong for indoor,” Pezzolla said.

“I was running the 400 (meter run) and the 600 (meter run) as well as the 4x4 (meter relay). Most of the time, we went to (the Ocean Breeze Indoor Track and Field facility) in Staten Island, but a few times, we went to the New York Armory. We also went to one meet in Boston.”

Pezzolla said that she felt a lot stronger and faster than she did running last year for the Golden Bears.

“I threw some innings in all of the scrimmages,” McKenna said. “I felt pretty strong. I thought that the first couple of months were going to be an adjustment period.”

When the time came for the season to begin, McKenna felt like he was ready.

McKenna is majoring in finance at Caldwell.

“School went well both semesters,” McKenna said.

“I’m making sure I’m on top of everything.”

But needless to say, the year didn’t go as planned for McKenna.

“Not at all,” McKenna said.

“To say it was wild would be an understatement.”

“I hit live occasionally,” Higgins said. “I either worked out or hit every day.”

When Higgins returned to Astoria after the Christmas break, he was ready to go.

“I was willing to do whatever it took to help the team win,” Higgins said.

When the baseball season began in late February – yes, college baseball begins in February in the northeast, as crazy as it sounds – Higgins didn’t get a chance to play right away.

“I didn’t play for the first two weeks,” Higgins said.

But Higgins got his first chance to play against the University of North Carolina-

“I love Coach Hampton,” Higgins said of the new coach, who replaced St. John’s coaching legend and New Jersey native Ed Blankmeyer, after Blankmeyer resigned to become the new manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Mets’ affiliate in the New York-Penn League.

“He understands the game and played it at such a high level (Cincinnati Reds’ organization),” Higgins said of Hampton. “I actually love all the coaches we have. I was sad about Coach Blankmeyer leaving. He recruited me and he’s one of the all-time greatest coaches in the game.”

Hampton had the Red Storm working hard through the fall.

“I’m guessing we were on the field from like 12:30 to 5:30 every day,” Higgins said.

I was getting used to all of it. I could see that the training definitely helped. I felt like I had the potential to run under 2:20 outdoors. I felt really good.”

The Observer | www.theobserver.com At first, Pezzolla thought that the break would only be a few weeks, but then finally, every NCAA collegiate institution ceased athletic operations for the spring semester.

Pezzolla remained at home at Lyndhurst, taking classes online.

As an athlete, Pezzolla was limited as to what she could do.

“I was working more on distance rather than speed,”

would go to her class and help her with things. I want to do that as well.”

Because of the lost semester due to the pandemic, the NCAA has awarded all students an extra year to compete in college athletics.

“I definitely think I’ll take advantage of that and take a fifth year,” Pezzolla said. “I’ll take that option.”

But as she trained so hard to run in her strongest events,

the year came crashing down – and not because of an injury or illness. It was out of Pezzolla’s control.

“Honestly, it sucks,” Pezzolla said. “At first, I was really upset.”

However, recently, she’s had a change of heart.

“But now, I look at it that I spent this year becoming a better athlete,” Pezzolla said.

“It’s up to now what I can do on my own. Some athletes

don’t do anything on their own. I’m doing well with it.”

Pezzolla said she’s now running about 25-to-30 miles a week, which is fine for a newly-minted middle distance runner.

Former Observer Female Athlete of the Year Giulia Pezzolla made the most of her freshman year at Monmouth University, a year cut short by the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

Pezzolla was all set to run the 400, 800 and 1,600-meter runs for the Hawks in the spring season.

The first meet was set for March 23. Pezzolla had returned to Lyndhurst for spring break right before that date.

“I was training real hard and felt really good,” Pezzolla said.

But then, disaster struck.

The coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic hit, putting everything on hold.

“I didn’t get one race (outdoors),” Pezzolla said. “I felt like I was more than ready.

It was the strongest I felt my whole life.”

When news of the pandemic hit, Pezzolla had no idea what was going to transpire next.

“I was like ‘Wow, what do I do?’” Pezzolla said. “I didn’t know what to do. I was training for so long every day, every month. I didn’t know what I was supposed to be doing.”

Pezzolla said. “I’ve become used to learning to work and time myself. By the end of June or July, I can get back on the track and run.”

Moving forward at Monmouth, Pezzolla will be focused more on running the 800 and 1,600-meter races.

“I don’t think I’ll train for the 400,” Pezzolla said. “I’ll move it up a little.”

But Pezzolla will go back to Monmouth with the idea of training for cross country season in the fall.

“I definitely enjoy training for cross country,” Pezzolla said. “I’m hoping to run.”

Pezzolla is a secondary education major, with a specialty in special education, much like her Lyndhurst High soccer and track coach Kim Hykey.

“She is definitely like my role model,” Pezzolla said.

Hudson delegation supports gov’s plan Hudson County’s full legislative delegation supports Gov. Philip D. Murphy’s emergency borrowing plan and will vote to approve it when it is heard in the state Senate and Assembly, the county’s Democratic Chairwoman Amy DeGise said last week.

Along with much needed direct federal support that U.S. Senator Bob Menendez and the state’s congressional delegation are working to obtain, the governor’s borrowing plan will prevent potentially massive layoffs of public sector workers — from police officers, EMTs and other first responders to teachers and public health workers — among many others.

The delegation released the following joint statement: “The COVID-19 crisis has pushed our local, county and state governments nearly to the breaking point as frontline employees have dealt with an unprecedented situation and worked tirelessly to care for our communities. Forcing these

government agencies to now lay off thousands of essential workers during this pandemic absolutely cannot be allowed to happen.

“We believe that Gov. Murphy’s emergency borrowing plan is a sound fiscal strategy that will provide state, local and county governments with the funding needed to continue providing the essential services that our residents rely on. We thank Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin for supporting the governor’s plan and posting it for a vote, and we ask Senate President Steve Sweeney to do the same.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, don’t ignore signs of stroke With hospitals around the country reporting a recent drop in the number of stroke cases arriving in their emergency rooms, some health experts suspect that fear of COVID-19 may be causing people to avoid going to the hospital and calling 911 for non-COVID related medical emergencies, like stroke.

“During this pandemic, emergency care professionals like myself are working to provide care for those who need it.

So much of what we do is time sensitive. We are particularly aware of the ‘Big Four,’ trauma, sepsis, stroke and heart attack, so it’s important to remember, when it comes to stroke or any medical emergency—call 911 and get to a hospital immediately. Hospitals and urgent care

Russell served in the Army during the Korean War. He retired as chief municipal finance officer for the Town of Kearny.

Ellen McDermott, (nee Leonard), 90, died Friday, June

5, 2020 at Alaris at Belgrove, Kearny.

Born in Kearny, Mrs. McDermott was a life-long resident.

Ellen was a secretary at RCA in Harrison for many years before retiring.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas F. McDermott, a captain in the Kearny Fire Department and Gerald M. McDermott and his wife, Jean; a sister, Marie Elbert and two brothers, Thomas and Frank Leonard.

She also leaves behind her

grandchildren Michael, Erin, Michael and Jamie.

Mrs. McDermott was predeceased by her husband, Gerald McDermott.

“I hit it hard, but I grounded out,” Higgins said. “I was very nervous, but it was a good nervous.

I got my bat on the ball. I don’t even know how I felt.

I guess it was the first time I felt that way since my first high school game. But I was totally ready.”

Higgins then got to play against St. Peter’s and Iona, getting hits in each game, getting a double against St. Peter’s. Higgins started the game against Iona at home March 11 at second base.

Higgins was planning to head to Fordham for a game on March 13, when everything came to a halt.

“We were told that we weren’t going to Fordham and everything was postponed for two weeks,” Higgins said. “None of thought that it would cause the

whole season to get wiped out. But when we didn’t hear anything after two weeks, we figured it out.”

Needless to say, Higgins was upset.

“I was very crushed by it,” Higgins said. “But I made the most of things. I set up a gym in my garage and lifted weights here. I went to my uncle (Mike, who played in the Colorado Rockies’ organization) and he has a batting cage in his basement. So I lifted with free weights and a bench press. I trained with my uncle, because he knows what it takes to get to the next level.”

Much like McKenna, Higgins said that he will more than likely take advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA. “I can’t see why I wouldn’t,” Higgins said. “I might as well take the extra year. I’m basically going to be a freshman again.”

Higgins had plans to play in the Valley Collegiate

Baseball League in Virginia for the Covington Lumberjacks.

“I was really excited to go there,” Higgins said.

But that league canceled play this summer.

“I never expected anything like this,” Higgins said. “It’s been just a weird year for everybody. It’s the first year I haven’t really participated in a sports game for three months. I think it forces everyone to appreciate how much sports means.”

Higgins said that he’s ready to go back to Queens to begin his second freshman year.

“If I get the call, I’m ready to go,” Higgins said.

Higgins is a sociology major with a focus on premed. He hopes to become a physician’s assistant down the road.

Needless to say, none of The Observer Athletes of the Year expected their freshman years to be like they turned out.

As Officer LeStrange began to climb the ladder toward the victim, Lt. Marmorato, who had been assessing the situation, feared time was limited, so he made the quick decision to enter the building.

Without his protective gear, Lt. Marmorato proceeded up the stairs to the second floor apartment in order to rescue the trapped woman. Shortly thereafter, Marmorato escorted the once trapped victim and her cat unharmed to safety.

Fire damage was limited to the basement area thanks to the quick response by the members of the Lyndhurst Fire Department. The cause of the fire is still

under investigation, but not considered to be suspicious.

Lt. Marmorato has been with the Lyndhurst Police Department for 23 years and a member of the Lyndhurst Fire Department for nearly 30 years.

“Lt. Marmorato has been involved with public safety almost as long as I’ve known him. This is exactly what he signed up for and his heroic act is not a surprise to those who know him,” Auteri said.

The Lyndhurst Police Department would like to thank the Lyndhurst Police Emergency Squad, the Lyndhurst Police Auxiliary, the North Arlington Volunteer Emergency Squad, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department, as well as fire departments from North Arlington, Rutherford and East Rutherford for their assistance during this operation.

While not much was immediately known about the incident that led to Wyble being a fugitive from justice, Auteri said he believed the charge stemmed from a drug deal gone bad in Virginia.

After Wyble was taken into custody, Lyndhurst police sought and got a search warrant for the motel room he’d been staying in and the vehicle he had been driving.

A search of the motel room yielded a loaded .9 mm handgun, Auteri said.

This led to additional charges of unlawful possession of a weapon being levied against Wyble, according to Auteri.

Wyble was remanded to the Bergen County Jail, Hackensack, where he will

remain until proceedings for extradition to Virginia, Auteri said.

That same gun is reportedly the one used in the Virginia robbery, Auteri said.

Smyth County, Virginia, is located in the southwestern portion of the state and at the 2010 Census, had a little more than 32,000 residents. Its borders near North Carolina and Tennessee. It is also just a few counties away from Kentucky.

The message, brutality against the black community, which led to the unfathomable death of 46-year-old George Floyd, would not be tolerated anymore.

And fortunately for everyone involved, the protest June 4 at Kearny Town Hall, which afterward became a march along Kearny Avenue north to Laurel Avenue and finally, Police Headquarters, remained

peaceful throughout.

That notion was possible because though they didn’t have to — after all, this was a protest mostly about the cops — the Kearny Police Department met with organizers and did everything within their power to ensure there was no violence, looting or rioting here as there had been in so many large cities across the country in the week prior.

After the meeting with organizers, the Kearny Police Department’s Command,

through Public Information Officer Capt. Timothy Wagner, issued a strong statement, and it was one whose message was loud and clear — and that clearly made a huge difference the day of the protest.

The meeting and statement were both necessary after incendiary remarks organizers made on Twitter before the protest.

Indeed, this desired peace was achieved.

Estimates had the crowd somewhere between 300 to 500 protesters.

Among them in attendance were Mayor Alberto G. Santos, First Ward Councilmembers Albino Cardoso and Marytrine DeCastro, Third Ward Councilwoman Eileen Eckel, Forth Ward Councilmembers Susan McCurrie and Jerry Ficeto and Kearny Business Administrator Steve Marks.

Deputy Police Chief Scott Macfie was present at the rally as were countless other members of the Kearny Police Department. Wagner and other members of the staff monitor the protest from Laurel Avenue.

Pincus was also on hand with Nellie Albizu and several other Health Department employees handing out free disposable gloves and masks to those who didn’t have them. Almost every person at the protest wore the protective gear. Pincus and company also handed out water to those in attendance on a rather hot day that topped out at around 88º Fahrenheit.

DeCastro was the only member of the council to sport a homemade sign, which paid homage to the reason everyone was gathered in the first place — Floyd, the man who was killed after a Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes. The sign also had the message “Black Lives Matter” among other things.

Among the speakers at the protest was Santos, who used a megaphone so that all who were assembled on Kearny Avenue, which was blocked off by the police, could hear him properly.

“Right now, I’m very proud of my community,” Santos said in unwritten remarks. “We

know why you’re here today and that’s what started this movement around the country.

It was an individual whose name is George Floyd. So let’s say his name right now. ‘George Floyd.’”

At that moment, those assembled repeated his name.

Santos went on.

“As you march, remember why you’re marching and walking together — the memory of George Floyd, a man who died unjustly because of the color of their skin. Remember why you’re here — it’s about racial injustice. …If you do, this small community will shine, not only in this state, but in our country.”

Santos then noted that Kearny is strong because it is diverse. As is the town’s Police Department.

“We have a diverse police department. We have a police department that is involved in the community on a daily basis. They interact with our community. This is the model that every police department around the country should follow.”

He then noted the “de-escalation” that took place between organizers and the Kearny Police Department prior to the march. To those who said that shouldn’t have happened, Santos said, “We should be coming together. George Floyd. That’s why we’re here.”

Unlike at many other protests, the mayor here was cheered loudly after he spoke.

One of the few other speakers who took to the bullhorn was Elijah Hughes, a young black man, a realtor, who lives in Bloomfield and who works in Montclair. He spoke with passion.

“We are here because we are angry. We are here because we are fed up,” Hughes said.

“That doesn’t mean you have to act out of character. We are not here to do any harm to this city (town.) We are here to make our voices heard because enough is enough. There is systematic racism in this country that has been flowing since its birth.

Lastly, he said, “Some jobs just can’t have bad apples. If a pilot decided, I’m just going to

crash today, you can’t have that.

When doctors mess up, they lose their license … it can be taken away from one mistake.

We are asking for accountability. That is all we’re asking for.

What is so hard about that?

If you kill someone at work, you go to prison, so why does a blue uniform make that any different?”

Still, despite the calm at the protest, there are some who believe that while it’s important to protest at times like these, when four bad cops killed an innocent man, it’s just as important to remember — yes, there are bad apples on police forces. But they are not the norm, they’re the exception.

“We support our police here knowing they do the right thing and give so much back to our communities,” Lisa Feorenzo, The Observer’s co-owner, said. “Given how loud protests have been, it was something else to watch our officers stand there when much of the message was about police. They stood there. They took it all in.

And that could not have been an easy task by any means.”
