or the high school Class of 2020 around the county, absolutely nothing was ordinary.

And that will certainly be the same for graduation ceremonies, which in many instances will look nothing like they did in years past.

For the Kearny High School graduating class, however, their ceremonies — note that plural word,

“ceremonies” — will at very least take place where they normally would have happened … on the field behind the school itself.

The Observer spoke last week with Kearny Superintendent of Schools Patricia Blood. Though Gov. Philip

D. Murphy has given districts the option to have in-person ceremonies sometime in July, the district here has instead decided on smaller, drive-through options that will take See GRADUATION, Page 17

DESPITE PANDEMIC, HELP IS

It took me a long time to say those words and even longer to actually believe and accept them.

As I write this, the world is going through the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are a lot of adjectives that can be used to describe the situation and our reactions to it: confusing, uncertain, anxious, worrisome and angry are just a few.

For those who suffer from the disease of addiction, there are even more adjectives that can be used: bored, isolated and lonely come to mind.

While there is no doubt this pandemic is affecting just about everyone in some way, it can be especially dangerous to those who suffer from the disease of addiction.

Those who are lucky to be in recovery are advised to avoid so-called “triggers.”

Triggers are people, places, things or circumstances that can potentially lead to a relapse of addictive

During this time of pandemic, it has become necessary for those of us in recovery to address our addictions in different ways. In-person meetings aren’t happening right now. But there are thousands of meetings still happening online.

As I mentioned, drug rehabilitation facilities are open and accepting new clients. You can visit www. aa.org (Alcoholics Anonymous) or www.na.org (Narcotics Anonymous) to find information on meetings, tools and resources. In New Jersey, call the addictions hotline at 844-ReachNJ for 24-hour assistance.

A special note to the families and friends of those suffering from addiction: it is nearly impossible for someone who isn’t an addict or alcoholic to fully understand the disease of addiction. You may feel as if you have failed a loved one because you don’t know how to help them. You may even blame yourself for what is happening.

Please don’t do that!

You have not failed. And you’re not expected to completely understand. Listen,

be there and love. Reach out to people who do understand and who are willing and able to help. In addition to the resources available to addicts and alcoholics, there are also resources that can be provided to family members and friends. Al-Anon is just one example and they can be found at www.AlAnon.org.

I know what it’s like to be in a crowded bar and feel completely alone. I know what it’s like to walk into a liquor store with tears in my eyes because I know I shouldn’t be there. And I know what it’s like to walk in anyway.

Lyndhurst PD hosts virtual ‘Coffee with a Cop’ on Zoom

W

ith a pandemic in full swing — and socialdistancing measures still needed — one might think it would be impossible for a police department to pull off a Coffee with a Cop event. But thanks to Zoom, the Lyndhurst Police Department did just that last week.

And while it certainly had a different feel to it than most other in-person, similar events, it certainly was informative for the residents who did log on and join in on the discussion.

Led by Lt. Paul Haggerty, the town’s emergencymanagement coordinator, the Coffee with a Cop online featured presentations

from other members of the Lyndhurst Police Department.

One of those members was Lt. Vincent Auteri, who kicked off the event with a warning about scams.

Auteri says scammers are getting creative and are preying on people’s goodwilled nature.

In one scam hitting nationwide, elderly people get a phone call from someone purporting to be a grandson or granddaughter. The caller tells the elderly person they need to come up with money to “bail out” the grandkid.

The thing is — most of the time, the grandkid isn’t locked up, is perfectly fine — and certainly doesn’t need bail money.

“If you get a call like that, call your grandchild and make sure they’re OK,” Auteri said.

The department recommends calling them after receipt of such a fake call.

Haggerty, meanwhile, reminded residents to continue to lock their cars during the pandemic.

He also noted that to maintain some semblance of normalcy, the department hosted about 125 birthday parades for local kids, during the pandemic. Those have come to a close, however, since the department is beginning to see an uptick in calls that are returning to what would be considered a normal volume.

Haggerty also noted two big things happening in the department.

The first is the return of a bike patrol.

Two new bicycles have been purchased and the squad will allow the department easier

access to residents, especially in a COVID-19 world. (We’ll have a story on the new patrol in the coming weeks.)

The next has been happening over many months — and it’s a brand-new communication system and location at Lyndhurst PD Headquarters. (We’ll also have a story on that in the coming weeks.)

The system includes the implementation of traffic cameras in many parts of the town. Haggerty demonstrate

one such spot on the Zoom call — at the DeJessa Bridge, facing east, as vehicles enter Lyndhurst from Nutley.

The high-definition cameras may be viewed by the chief and others in the department on laptop or desktop computers and will aid the department in the fight against crime immensely.

In all, the event was quite informative — and if and when there’s another, more Lyndhurst residents should definitely consider attending.

Nutley PD: COVID-19 not stopping scammers

T

he Nutley Police Department continues to warn residents of scams being perpetrated.

If you recently withdrew money from an account in the form of cash or cashier’s check, please be aware scammers are taking advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic and have been targeting the elderly population.

There are a variety of scams being attempted. In addition to Internet credit card scams and identity and bank frauds, police have been investigating a series of other scams seen throughout the state.

Among the more prominent scams are: The bail bonds

scam where a criminal will call a victim and say their grandchild was arrested. The criminal may or may not provide the grandchild’s name.

In some cases, someone was placed on the phone pretending to be the grandchild as proof they were arrested.

The criminal will ask that you post or give a sum of money in order for the grand-

child to be released from jail and ask for your home address to pick up the money.

Please be aware the criminal may give you instructions on what to do or say to a bank teller if you are questioned as to why are you taking out the cash. The criminal may also instruct you to act upset and angry or to tell the bank employee that it is none of their business as to why you are taking out the money.

In the IRS scam, the criminal will call the victim and tell them that they owe the government money and if you don’t pay, you’ll be arrested.

To avoid being arrested you must pay your debt by way of Moneygram or gift cards.

POLICE BEAT stand: the IRS will never call you and pressure you into settling your tax debt with Moneygram or gift card.

“These are just two of the many scams currently being conducted,” the Nutley PD said in a statement. “You have worked very hard for your money, so please do not give it up so easily. Scammers are trying to upset you into impulsively handing your money over to them. Often, they will not allow you to get off the phone, so you are unable to verify. If anyone calls, texts or e-mails you whom you do

not personally know, looking for money, insist they provide a name and number to call back — then call a relative, close friend or police.”

The Nutley PD says scammers use your emotions to disarm you, and when you’re nervous or upset, it is difficult to think clearly. Although the storyline may vary, the results are almost always the same — send, wire, provide a code or we will pick up your money.

Please share this information with family members who may not be aware of such scams.

he Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark has once again expanded cemetery availability to those who wish to visit buried loved ones and it has expanded the number of people who may attend upcoming funeral services.

On Monday, June 1, summer hours began and cemetery gates — including those at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington — will be open for visitation, daily, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Wednesdays, where gates will be open until 7 p.m.

a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays until Sept. 15, 2020.

At committal services, up to 25 family members may now attend outdoor, graveside services. Up to 10 family members may now attend indoor mausoleum interment services.

The archdiocese urges all at cemeteries to continue practicing social distancing by standing 6 feet apart and by wearing masks as per the state’s mandate. Signs will be posted in cemeteries. Cooperation will help to protect family members, especially those most vulnerable.

Vets make heavenly donations

Putting the cart before the horse with street sweeping

S

everal communities in The Observer’s readership area have made the irrational decision to restart the enforcement of street sweeping. And while we completely understand the need for streets to be cleaned — some are deplorable thanks to the laziness of those who keep discarding masks, gloves, etc., on streets — the reinstitution of enforcing the rules and regulations equates to putting the proverbial cart before the horse.

As of this very day, there is still a mandate, from the governor’s office, to stay at home. Very few businesses have been permitted to reopen. Children are still doing their coursework at home. For those still fortunate to have a job, many perform their duties at the house, not the office.

So let’s apply a little logic here.

Many people — in all towns — are staying at home, for a myriad of reasons.

And, in the towns we cover, parking is at a premium, almost universally.

So, on certain days, these towns that have unsuspended alternate-side-of-the-street parking regulations, have caused an incredible mess that is virtually impossible to rectify.

If people must move their vehicles for three, four, five hours at a time, where do the mayors who have reinstituted street sweeping expect people are going to go? When there is no street sweeping, there still aren’t enough parking spaces for the most part. Day or night.

And so now, people who are expected to stay home are also expected to move their vehicles — somewhere, somehow — for hours at a time, with absolutely nowhere to put them?

Seriously? Seriously?

Yes, seriously! That’s the inane expectation.

The towns that have begun to enforce alternate-side regulations must rethink this. Once the governor gives the OK to go back to work — and the stay-at-home orders are eased or ended — go ahead and ticket people who don’t move their cars.

There would be little excuse not to by then.

But until the time comes where people aren’t required to be at home — or aren’t working or doing school work there — it is inherently unfair to be making people more crazed by forcing them to move their vehicles. Haven’t people here endured enough, as it is, already?

I was amazed that a 16-year-old could have the perception that he has about how the COVID-19 lockdowns have affected our citizens.

Our governor and those in the legislature who want to keep the state in lockdown receive a paycheck every week. That is a far cry from many small business owners who will never be able to reopen, and for others that

It seems that any news that favors the reopening of our economy is being repressed by those who run Blue States.

Perhaps it is about getting us to bend the knee, and accept doing what we are told, when we are told.

Mail-in ballots are an absolute recipe for disaster

By Michael Galloway Don Bosco Preparatory School The talk of today other than the unfortunate death of George Floyd is the discussion of mail-in ballots nationwide for the 2020 Presidential Election. Around the country, the idea has been swirling since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and some states have really latched onto the idea whereas others like Texas and Florida are starkly against the concept of mailing in votes.

Why might you ask? Well, they claim voter fraud and fake votes would taint or even swing the election one way or the other.

Many sources, take CNN or MSNBC, have made claims that it’s almost impossible to commit voter fraud via mail which was disproved within hours as in Philadelphia, a judge was found to be colluding with Democrats shoving ballot boxes full of Democrat votes.

This wasn’t revealed until a few weeks ago. Along with this, mail-in ballots definitely don’t seem to be a needed way of voting for many Americans seeing as half the country is literally on fire and looting is rampant, so if a guy can go out and steal a Lego set why can’t the same man go out and vote in person?

Really the whole debacle with George Floyd and the riots nationwide seem to have made the virus disappear seeing there are thousands of people huddled together rioting and burning their own businesses down. Also, why is it that only Democrats are pushing for mail-in ballots? Is it because as stated they can bribe judges and officials to rig the election in their favor seeing as their own candidate can’t finish a sentence? Personally I think so. Gov. Murphy himself is pushing for mail-in ballots all across New Jersey and is limiting where in-person voting can occur.

Let that sink in, with all the pandemonium going on with COVID-19 which is still real.

It is completely foolhardy to not allow Americans to vote the way they want and put a Presidential Election at risk for widespread voter fraud even greater than that seen in 2016 where it was reported in Florida that hundreds if not thousands of votes were just simply ignored or not counted and were simply taken from a building in tubs that were placed in vans never to be counted. The problem here is that voter fraud is dangerous

and with mail-in ballots, there’s no realistic way to check who is voting and if they are alive, dead, real or fake — there is simply no real way to check efficiently and this can do irreparable damage to our republic if we allow it to take place. In any event, the mail-in ballots cannot be allowed to occur and if they do there is fear it can do real damage to our country and destroy the publics’ ability to trust in the system we have so long been founded on.

KPD: Arrested biker had ‘crack’ in his pants Compiled by Capt. Tim Wagner Kearny Police Department

n May 21 at 4:39 p.m., Dets. Mike Andrews and Dave Bush were at a surveillance location and allegedly observed Luis E. Guerra, 41, of Kearny, ride his bicycle to the location before purchasing crack cocaine and

pedaling off. The detectives stopped Guerra at the ShopRite parking lot where they seized 12 glass vials of crack cocaine and a smoking pipe from Guerra’s pants pockets.

Guerra was charged on a summons with possession of crack cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Due to state computers being down, detectives dusted off

an old-fashioned typewriter to complete their summonscomplaint; improvise, adapt and overcome being their dictum.

Guerra was later released.

On May 24 at 5:49 p.m., dispatch received a call from a citizen reporting that he saw a green Toyota Tundra being driven erratically before being parked in the customer

parking lot of Midland Dairy at Midland Avenue and Elm Street. Officers Mat Lopez, Nicole Williams and Jean-Paul Duran went to investigate and found the truck parked as described.

The officers approached as Luis Vererdugo, 39, of Newark, reportedly, “… stumbled out of the driver side door.” After detecting signs of intoxication in Vererdugo, officers attempted to administer field sobriety tests. Vererdugo reportedly would have no part of it.

As he started to walk away, Vererdugo allegedly told the officers that he had done nothing wrong since they hadn’t seen him drive the vehicle. The officers disagreed and arrested him.

Vererdugo was charged on summonses with drunken driving and driving without a license. Julio C. Leon, 36, of Kearny, the owner of the Toyota Tundra was issued a ticket for allowing an unlicensed person to drive.

Vererdugo was later released.

On May 26, Dets. Mike Farinola and Jonathan Dowie were dispatched to meet Thelma Anderson, 38, of Kearny, at the home of a former business partner who had allegedly agreed to relinquish a sum of money to Anderson, the ownership of which had been the subject of prior dispute. The detectives were asked to stand by and keep the peace.

Upon knocking on a door of the multi-family home, Anderson was reportedly told by other tenants that she had missed her former business partner; he had reportedly left for Florida. Upon hearing this news, Anderson, over the objection of the tenants,

allegedly pushed past them and into the home where she kicked open a basement door. The detectives tried to remove Anderson from the basement but she was able to pull away from them and damage a second door before being arrested.

Anderson was charged on a summons with burglary and criminal mischief. She was later released.

On May 26 at 3:51 p.m., Officers Chris Manolis and John Donovan were dispatched to Walmart where store security reported that Tatia A. Campos, 31, of New York City, under-rang baby wipes and automotive supplies at the self-checkout, for a $323.12 loss.

Campos was charged on a summons with shoplifting and later released.

On May 26 at 7:47 p.m., Officer Anthony Oliveira and several back-up officers were sent to Walmart on a report of a fight between an employee and a customer. Upon officers’ arrival, the customer had reportedly already left the store. The employee, a 53-year-old Newark man, told police a customer became irate after he informed the customer he had missed scanning an item at the selfcheckout. To avoid further confrontation, the employee took the item and walked away.

As the officer was returning to his vehicle, bystanders alerted him that the customer had returned and was currently fighting the employee inside the store.

Officers returned to find the parties separated and the store employee’s shirt ripped. Customer Gregory Drummond, 41, of Brooklyn, claimed that the employee punched him before the officers returned; Drummond demanded his arrest.

As this allegation represents a non-indictable offense that did not occur in the officers’ presence, Drummond was referred to municipal court to make a complaint. This did not sit well with Drummond who allegedly started shouting, cursing and flailing See KPD, Page 16

Harrison’s Desosa signs letter to play sprint football at Caldwell

‘Last Dance’ baseball tourney gives locals hope of playing Could it be actually possible? Could we see some semblance of high school baseball beginning in a few weeks?

That’s the idea that made its way around the baseball diamonds last week, a simple thought and plan that spread like a wildfire, especially among the elite programs in northern New Jersey.

Started by St. Joseph (Metuchen) head baseball coach and athletic director Mike Murray, Jr. and supported by brilliant baseball minds such as local baseball talent scout John Kroeger and Millburn head coach Brian Chapman, the idea of the New Jersey’s Last Dance World Series started to draw some major attention last week.

It went from a simple idea in the beginning of the week to having official nomination forms being filled out and sent in to the organizers by week’s end.

Murray, Jr., who was a great player in his playing days at Wake Forest and later a draft pick and product of the San Francisco Giants’ organization, heard of New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy’s plan to lessen the restrictions on outdoor activities in the state and started the ball rolling with the possibility of having a

tournament.

Murray, Jr. said that he wanted to give his players, especially his graduating seniors, one last chance to play together. That opportunity was wiped away at first by the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic that cancelled the entire spring sports season.

Murray, Jr. has maintained that he will follow every stipulation and regulation that will be in place regarding the health, safety and well being of everyone come July.

But if Gov. Murphy further lifts restrictions and allows organized sports to be played, then the tourney can be held – even without the restraints usually held by the state’s governing body for high school athletics, the NJSIAA. Since the Last Dance World Series cannot realistically begin until early next month, the NJSIAA will not hold jurisdiction over the tourney, much like summer baseball such as AAU, American Legion, Senior Babe Ruth and other leagues.

“They were always interested in me since the end of my sophomore year,” Desosa said.

“That’s when (former Harrison head coach) Dan Hicks told me about it. They focus on faster players and the speed of the game is better. It took me a little while to get used to the idea, but when I thought about it, football is football.”

So last week, Desosa finally signed his national letter of intent to play college football at Caldwell and will enroll at the school in August.

Desosa said that Kelly told him that the weight limit for sprint football will be at 190 pounds this season.

“I was never really worried about it,” said Desosa, who stands 5-foot-10 and weighs about 185 pounds.

“I’ve always been able to lose weight if I have to. I’m not worried about it at all to be honest.”

Desosa said that he went

“I knew I liked the school as soon as I drove through the front gates,” Desosa said.

“It really had a nice feeling.”

Desosa also said that he helped that former teammates like Ray Chico, Anthony Zamora, Daniel Ruela and Javian Olsen have also already signed on to play football at Caldwell. Chico played for the Cougars last fall.

“I’ve gone to school with those guys my whole life,” Desosa said. “I’ve been play-

ing with Anthony as soon as I started playing football.

We came up at the same time.”

Desosa said that he felt so relieved once he signed the letter.

“It took the weight of the world off my shoulders,” Desosa said. “I thought I was just going to go to school for my education. I really thought my football career was over. But now, I’m working out and getting ready for the season. It’s a great feeling.”

“They play really good competition like Navy, Cornell, Penn,” Desosa said.

“The weight limit doesn’t matter. It’s good competition and I’m going to compete.”

Desosa also likes the relationship he has already developed with Kelly.

“He calls me almost every night,” Desosa said of Kelly.

“He’s texting me. He’s showing me a lot of love.”

Desosa said that he was throwing last week with Ruela.

“We were talking about how much fun it’s going to be there together,” Desosa said. “It’s going to be excit-

ing.”

Desosa plans on majoring in business administration at Caldwell.

He also has high hopes for the future.

“I want to make my own clothing line,” Desosa said.

“I want to establish a clothing line for athletes.”

Needless to say, the hope and despair of November has now been alleviated.

“It all turned out pretty good for me,” Desosa said.

“It would have been sad if I would have not been able to play.”

Now, Harrison’s loyalists have a place to go watch college football this fall.

who took the initiative to even talk about it and find the teams they want to participate.”

Lyndhurst head coach Pat Auteri was also pleased to receive the invitation.

“I signed my team up,” Auteri said. “We’re definitely interested. We have a lot of our kids lined up to play club ball, but I don’t think it will be a problem to get a team. It’s giving us an opportunity to play again. I think it says a lot about our program that we’re being considered. It’s an honor that they would think of us.”

“I think our people would want to see our kids play, especially our seniors,” Auteri said.

Auteri was fairly confident that Lyndhurst could serve as one of the hosts for the pool play portion of the tourney, even though the Recreation Facility fields are slated to receive a new FieldTurf put down beginning July 1.

That means that Lyndhurst would have to turn to Breslin Field in the Riverside County Park facility to be a host site.

“I think they would be willing to work with us,” Auteri said of the Bergen County officials who run Breslin. “Any way we can get back on the field, especially for our seniors.”

Auteri said that he’s also heard from some coaches who would want to schedule independent games during July and August if possible.

“Maybe we can get some great games this summer,”

Auteri said. “Guys like Kroeger and Chapman are putting in the time to organize this. I think there’s excitement all around. We have a rich tradition of baseball in Lyndhurst.

It’s really an honor to be thought of this highly.”

And as for Nutley?

“We’ll be ready,” Harbison said.

If you listen closely, you can probably hear the faint cry of an umpire bellowing, “Play ball!”

Well, that cry just might get louder in the weeks to come.

Obituaries JOHN TROVATO

John Trovato, 71, of North Arlington died May 7, 2020.

Funeral services were private and under the care of the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home in Kearny.

Born in Newark, John lived in Kearny before moving to North Arlington 30 years ago.

John served in the Army for several years, stationed in Germany until his honorable discharge in 1980. A member of the Knights of Columbus and the VFW, John worked as a truck driver for the Town of Harrison from 1989 until his retirement in 2010.

The son of the late John and Domenica (nee Cimato) Trovato, John was the beloved husband of the late Joan Trovato; dear brother of Catherine Ingenito and her husband Thomas, and the late Dr. Joseph Trovato.

He also leaves to cherish his memory his nieces and nephews Andrea, Laura, Anthony and Joseph.

Lena Gavin, nee Devingo, a long-time Kearny resident, died Friday, May 29, 2020, at 88.

Lena was predeceased by her loving husband of 69 years Donald Gavin, who died March 30, 2020. She was a loving mother above all, but a loving and caring friend to everyone fortunate to cross in her path. Lena was the epitome of 1 John 4:7: God is love.

She was also a long-time participant at bingo in the church basement. Above all, she lived by the Word of God and lived every day of her life proclaiming His goodness.

Lena will be sorely missed but she will live on in the hearts of many and serve as a shining example for all of us to emulate.

Because of the current environment, a celebration of Lena’s life will take place at a later date. She will be interred in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Two out-of-staters nabbed on drug charges: LPD While Memorial Day Weekend is usually a good time for rest and relaxation, it certainly wasn’t for two New Yorkers who, in separate incidents, were nabbed here on drug charges, Det. Lt. Vincent Auteri, the Lyndhurst Police Department’s Public Information Officer told The Observer.

According to Auteri, in the first incident, Officer Mark Rivera was on patrol at approxi-

mately 10 p.m., Saturday, May 23, when he observed a Honda SUV illegally parked on a residential street. Rivera says he passed the Honda and noticed one person inside it.

Shortly after, the Honda pulled out and made a turn onto Rutherford Avenue, allegedly doing so without signaling a turn.

Rivera says he followed the Honda and pulled it over — and

when he approached the driver, Hovadis Maracallo, 39, of Middletown, New York, he allegedly smelled “a pronounced odor of raw marijuana” coming from the vehicle.

Because of the smell, Rivera was able to search the vehicle, which Auteri says led to the discovery of a baggie containing raw marijuana as a well as a large quantity of assorted edibles containing THC. The

Additionally, Maracallo was also reportedly in possession of six syringes of liquid THC, a bottle of liquid THC, two psilocybin mushrooms and several bars of scented THC soap.

Auteri says Maracallo was released on summonses after being charged with possession of CDS and possession of drug paraphernalia.

YOGURT MAY REDUCE COLON CANCER RISK

According to estimates from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), there will have been 145,600 new cases of colorectal cancer in the United States in 2019. However, colon cancer is largely preventable with early screening and detection.

Anyone with a normal level of risk should get regular screenings beginning at age 50, while those at high risk (a personal or family history of colorectal cancer, other cancers, or inflammatory bowel disease) should consult with their physicians about beginning screenings before age 50. At the same time, new research shows that men who consumed two or more servings of yogurt per week were 19 percent less likely to develop precancerous growths in the bowel

than men who ate no yogurt.

Rental assistance coming soon in NJ As part of Gov. Philip D. Murphy’s overall response to assist New Jersey residents affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the governor and Lt. Gov. Oliver late last week announced the COVID-19 Short-Term Rental Assistance Program.

The program will provide rental assistance to low- and moderate-income households that have had a substantial reduction in income as a result of the pandemic, including those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

“From the moment this crisis took hold, we’ve made it clear that New Jerseyans should not fear losing their home as a result of financial hardship caused by COVID-19,” Murphy said. “This program will provide at least $100 million in housing relief for low- and moderate-income families who need it most. We’ll continue working closely with our legislative and community-based partners to further strengthen protections for tenants.”

The program will open for applications in July and begin paying rental assistance in September.

Qualifying households will be expected to pay 30% of their income toward rent, and the program would pay the remainder of their rent up to DCA’s fair-market rent payment standard. At the three-month mark, the household budget will be reviewed to determine if assistance is still needed.

Assistance that is no longer required will be used to serve additional families.

“We understand the challenges families are facing at this difficult time and it is our goal to help as many people as possible, which is why we developed this new rental assistance program,” Oliver, also the state’s DCA commissioner, said. “In addition to the new program, DCA is also urging households in need to apply for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which helps people pay for their home energy bills. With additional funding through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, New Jersey is able to help even more families cover their

rent and energy expenses through this crisis.”

The program will devote approximately 20% of funding to serve those who are very low income and homeless or at risk of homelessness with up to 12 months of rental assistance. These households will be selected by DCA through a coordinated entry process in each county’s homeless management information system.

To help families reach self-sufficiency, case management, financial planning and other assistance will be provided by the program.

For the remainder of the funding, DCA will administer an online lottery. When the lottery is opened, households may submit applications and participants will be selected from the overall pool of applicants through a randomized process based on eligibility and the lottery criteria.

Applicants selected through the lottery will be eligible to receive up to six months of short-term rental assistance.

Should further funding become available, DCA will serve additional households.

Households may qualify for the lottery based on these standards” • Must be a New Jersey resident.

• Maximum income up to 80% of area median income (AMI).

• Must have been current in their rental payments as of March 1, 2020.

•Must be able to provide proof of impact of COVID-19 beginning on March 9, 2020, when Governor Murphy declared the state of emergency.

Drummond was then arrested.

Incident to arrest, two bags of marijuana and two packages of rolling papers were seized from Drummond’s pants pocket.

Drummond was charged by summons with disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was later released.

On May 27 at 5 p.m., Sgt. Mike Gonzalez and Det. John Fabula were behind a black Subaru with illegally-tinted windows at a red light at Passaic Avenue and the Belleville Turnpike. When the light turned green, the detectives reported the Subaru did not move for several moments and they could see through the side view mirror that the driver had her head down.

When the Subaru eventually started to move, the detectives pulled it over. When they approached to check on the driver, they were met with the aroma of marijuana. A search revealed two clear baggies of marijuana and a plastic tube containing a burnt marijuana cigar in a seat pocket, as

Driver Rebeca R. Costa, 29, of Kearny, was charged on a summons with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia and later released.

Andrews and Bush went to Oakwood Avenue and Chestnut Street to investigate a citizen’s complaint of men doing drugs in an illegally parked, red, Honda SUV. The detectives found the red Honda, which was illegally parked at the corner but unoccupied.

They glanced in through the window and saw a partiallysmoked marijuana cigar lying in an ashtray.

The detectives returned to their car and watched as Christopher S. Elliott, 26, and Zeshan Zahid, 23, both of Jersey City, entered the Honda SUV. When the detectives returned to speak to them, the open door now provided a fuller appreciation of the odor of marijuana. A search uncovered a bag of marijuana labeled “Macintosh” allegedly protruding from Zahid’s shirt pocket, a plastic bag of marijuana in the Honda’s center console, a backpack containing marijuana, and the aforementioned marijuana cigar.

Both men were charged on summonses with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Zahid was also charged with hindering apprehension for reportedly verbalizing a false identity to police during his booking.

Blood says graduates will enter behind the KHS stadium via the King Street entrance. Each graduate must be in a vehicle and a total of four family members may also be in the vehicles. Each will be met by two KHS administrators and Blood.

The stadium will be decorated with a backdrop as it is each year. A photographer will be on hand to take pictures of the graduates inside their vehicles — they won’t be able to get out of the cars.

The graduates have been informed the date and time of their ceremonies — they’ll take place between

The mini-ceremonies will happen in five-minute intervals and they’ll be directed by members of the Kearny Police Department.

Once each ceremony is over, cars will exit the rear of the high school via Garfield Avenue. And that’s it.

There will be no faculty members on hand.

The Observer can’t even attend.

No exceptions will be made to there being a total of five human beings in vehicles.

They won’t hear or have any “Pomp and Circumstance,” but something is better than nothing, right?

It’s the reality of living in a COVID-19 world.

“We really want to honor the graduates,” Blood says.

“If the regulations remained at 25 people being allowed to gather for an outdoor event, I’d have to do 17 separate graduation ceremonies. It just wasn’t feasible.”

To achieve that honor for the 423 young women and men who are about to embark on new life journeys, a large banner will be placed at Kearny and Midland avenues. Speeches will also be given and placed recorded on video for the kids to see afterward. It’s at that time the graduates will actually receive their diplomas — it’s too early to give them out now as the school year isn’t technically over until late in June.

Now for the younger students who are about to finish their careers at Lincoln Middle School, small parades of vehicles will visit the neighborhoods where they live. Blood says finishing the eighth-grade is more of an “advancement” than it is a graduation, so the ceremonies won’t be as extensive as they would be for finishing high school.

Students from Lincoln School, Lyndhurst, were honored with their graduation photos being placed along the fences at the school. We wish them and all members of the Class of 2020 the best!
