Police vehicle named in memory of late Lyndhurst cop

“His smile was so warm,” Auteri says. “He was just a super sincere, warm person, the type of man who would give you the shirt of his back.”

The two men were good friends,

going back to their kindergarten days at Roosevelt School, Lyndhurst. Both men would go on to join the Lyndhurst Police Department. So in many ways, they had a very special bond. It was one that transcended school and career.

he Observer was fortunate to have a Q&A with Dr. Naveen Ballem (seen in photo at right), chief medical officer of Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville. What follows is

his response to questions we asked.

The Observer (TO): How are you doing personally? Have you ever dealt with anything even remotely close to this?

Dr. Naveen Ballem (Doc): It has been a trying and difficult time; I have never experienced anything quite

like this. There is so much that is still unknown and we continue to learn every day. I am personally helping out on the floors, in the Emergency Room even the ORs. I have been volunteering for some Intensive Care Unit shifts myself, to support my colleagues.

In my personal life, usually when I need to decompress from work, I love playing golf, but with the stay-at-home order, that has not been an option. So, I have brushed off my unused Peloton and ride regularly, which gives me a burst of mental and physical rejuvenation.

My family is healthy and safe, which is what is most important … I have quarantined myself to the guest bedroom, to minimize my exposure to my wife and children. My kids, aged 8 and 12, probably know more about the coronavirus than most kids, or even adults for that matter.

I remember one time when my wife was baking cookies and my 8-year-old said, “Mom, those cookies smell amazing, and if I can smell them, it means I don’t have Coronavirus!” He somehow heard that anosmia, the loss of your sense of smell, is a symptom of the COVID-19.

Our children definitely watch and listen; they are a part of this new reality, too.

TO: What is the medicine regimen that is being used, if any, for patients positive for COVID-19? Is the hydroxycholoroquine/Z-Pac combo working? Is it being encouraged?

Doc: At Clara Maass, we have treated people with hydroxycholorquine/Z-pac combo and it appeared to show some positive outcomes.

We have been fortunate to be able to partner with Gilead and participate in their Remdesivir trial and also with the Mayo Clinic and convalescent

plasma treatment trial, all under the leadership of Mona Philips.

Mona and her team were always ahead of the curve and ensured that the patients at Clara would have access to the most current and effective treatments that exist. Although many trials show early promise, this disease and the knowledge we have grows daily. Currently, it appears that the Remdesivir data demonstrated a more rapid recovery from COVID and its postulated that it will also show a statistically significant improvement in survival. Currently, it does not demonstrate the needed statistical data but as more patients are entered into this trial we expect and hope to see a continued improvement in mortality.

TO: How about the staff ?

Are doctors, nurses, techs, orderlies, etc., beginning to show fatigue? Have any staff quit or retired because of the pandemic?

Doc: It has definitely been hard on everyone here, but the most important thing is that no one has forgotten that they are human, or that the people around them need support. In the hospital, every day feels like a year, and every week feels like a second.

Each day, I have seen at least one person break down and cry, but there is always someone else there to comfort them who understands what they are going through.

Seeing colleagues struggle is incredibly difficult, but at the end of the day, we are all rowing this ship together. I am so proud of the selfless nature of the people I work with.

We have things that we do to raise people’s spirits.

Whenever something positive happens, we play (The Beatles’) “Here Comes the Sun,” over the loudspeaker, so that everyone, no matter what they and their patients are going through, can share in the positive news coming from somewhere within the hospital. Things like that allow us to share in our successes, not just our sadness. The tremendous amount of love and support from our communities, churches, and the Board of Trustees has been overwhelming.

I would never judge anyone if they are scared and do not want to come to work. But what I am witnessing is that almost everyone has stepped up and stepped up with pride.

This is our calling. This is why we became healthcare workers.

It wasn’t for the pay, or for the hours … but rather, it was for a greater purpose. I think this underlying bond of purpose and wanting to help people has really come out during this pandemic.

TO: What kind of shifts are doctors, nurses, technicians, working?

Doc: The days are long, and we’ve been in a new normal since the beginning. CMMC is located only 10 miles outside of New York City in Essex County, so we felt the impact of COVID-19 immediately.

Our ER, under the leadership of Dr. Fontanetta and Donna Devita, set up a process to separate non-COVID and

suspected COVID patients very rapidly.

Our ICU volume surged over 400% in a two-week period, and finding the resources to support that surge really required all hands on deck. With the tireless work of Dr. Frank Califano and his team, the ICU was prepared to tackle this pandemic.

“All hands on deck” has taken on an entirely new meaning in the midst of COVID-19. No matter what their role, every person coming to work every day in this hospital is giving 200%.

Staff from every specialty are coming together and sharing best medical practices around this new disease, enabling us to give the most cohesive, collaborative and up to date care possible. From the person who greets you at the front door, to the environmental services staff, who ensure the hospital is safe and sanitized, to the people in dietary services, you realize we are all risking our lives and confronting this disease together.

This pandemic has clearly played an emotional toll on everyone, including those on the front lines. RWJBarnabas Health with leadership from Dr. Gabe Kaplan have created a confidential hotline for mental health support and well-being.

since they cannot visit their loved ones? Is there a patient advocate who works with families? Has this been a challenge?

Doc: I am so inspired by Joe Wotecki, Javier Lavarez and Tania Manago, who make up our Patient Satisfaction team. They work so diligently every day to make sure patients feel supported, such as organizing Facetimes between patients and their families.

Nurses have been positioning patients’ beds near the windows so their families can see them from outside and pray for them. It has definitely

presented new challenges, but it is amazing how resourceful health care workers have become to help their patients and families through these very difficult times.

TO: There are talks of reopening our state to get the economy back and flowing. Is the time right to do this now?

Is it too soon? Should it already have happened?

Doc: What is most important is that people take the necessary precautions to prevent spreading or catching this virus. From wearing cloth masks, as the CDC recommends, to standing the recommended 6 feet apart, we must

all do what we can to take care of ourselves and each other. Hand hygiene is such a simple yet effective way to reduce spread of so many viruses and bacteria, and COVID is another example.

TO: Are you concerned about a second wave of this in the fall/winter? If so what’s the best way to deal with that possibility?

Jared served in the Marines and his main base was Miramar, an air station in San Diego that formerly served as a Naval air station.

“He was a member of VMFA-314 (The Black Knights) and traveled throughout the Pacific area from Okinawa to Alaska working on weapons systems and arming F/A18 Hornet aircraft from 2004-2008 and is currently working at home,” Thomson said.

The final flag also has special meaning for Thomson.

“The fourth and last flag shows me as a proud member of the Sons of the American Revolution,” he said.

His membership stems from having several great-grandfathers who fought with George Washington in New Jersey and one who also fought with George Rodgers Clark in what is now Ohio.

Clark was one of the highest-ranking officers in the American Revolution.

His great-grandpa, called William Chapman, was born in Sussex County in 1752.

With Memorial Day coming this weekend, the flags are out and flying proudly as they are every late May and then some.

No pandemic was going to stop Thomson from displaying them this year as he has done for a decade.

“We fly the flags over the three-day periods of Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day,” Thomson said. “In addition, the flags are flown on special days such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Armed Forces Day, Gold Star Mothers Day, Election Day, Veterans Day and on Pearl Harbor Day.”

KPD: 2 from Mass. arrested on robbery charges Compiled By Capt. Tim Wagner Kearny Police Department An incident involving a car driving onto a sidewalk led to the arrest of numerous people on robbery charges, including two visitors from the Bay State.

On May 4 at 9:55 p.m., several officers were dispatched to the area of Davis and Oakwood avenues on multiple calls of a car being driven on the sidewalk. Officer Ruben Rivera arrived to the scene and found a damaged Dodge Avenger matching callers’ descriptions traveling away from the scene on Schuyler Avenue.

Officer Rivera stopped the car and was joined by Officers Nicole Williams and Jean Paul Duran.

Driver Charly Carelus, 31, of Irvington, started rambling to the officers that he’d just been robbed.

Officers later learned Carelus allegedly was driven to Kearny in his Dodge by his girlfriend who had pre-arranged a “street transaction.”

Allegedly, the group of men with whom they planned to transact business were armed.

One reportedly put a gun to Carelus’ head and robbed his wallet. Carelus left his friend behind on the street, got into the driver’s seat of his car

and sped off on the sidewalk striking a parked car before continuing on.

Meanwhile, the odor of raw marijuana in Carelus’ car was formidable and officers reportedly found 60 grams of it and a grinder. He was later issued a summons for possession of CDS and drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license, possession of CDS in a vehicle and driving an uninsured vehicle.

The next day, at about half noon, officers were called to the home of a resident who lives near the robbery scene.

The resident reported he found gates open leading to his yard, which was unusual.

Upon investigating, he found a scarf and a handgun in his yard.

Officers seized the handgun, believed to have been used in the robbery.

Detectives Neil Nelson, Jonathan Dowie and Jordenson Jean took the lead on the robbery investigation and by May 6, they identified suspects. That day, Det. Mike Andrews was detailed to surveil a home on Hickory Street and says he saw suspect Jonathan Quizhpi, 20, of Kearny, exit the house and enter a nearby car. Andrews, Dowie and Nelson placed Quizhpi under arrest without incident.

Quizhpi was charged on a

warrant with robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose and conspiracy.

Later, the detectives observed suspect Luis G. Ortiz, 24, of Rockland, Massachusetts, exit the house and they took him into custody without incident. Ortiz was charged on a warrant with robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose and conspiracy.

Believing that (yet another) suspect Luis A. Negron, 22, of Bedford, Massachusetts, was still inside the Hickory Street home and was possibly armed, the Hudson County Regional SWAT Team was dispatched, made entry to the home and arrested Negron without incident.

Negron was charged on a warrant with robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose and con-

spiracy.

On May 7, warrants were signed also charging Jayden Vieira, 20, and Kristian Vieira, 22, both of Kearny, with robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose and conspiracy. The next day, at approximately 9 p.m., detectives arrested both men without incident at their Kearny home.

They were later remanded to the Hudson County Jail in South Kearny.

Meanwhile, in other incidents: • On May 8 at 11:01 a.m., Officers Anthony Nunez, Mat Lopez, Kyle Plaugic and Sgt. Peter Gleason responded to a private home on Pine Street to check the welfare of a person at the request of a state agency. Upon arrival, resident Amanda Walsh allegedly emerged from the house screaming at officers for harassing her before withdrawing inside and slamming

the door.

A family member told officers that she came to check on Walsh since Walsh had allegedly been texting her without relent and allegedly sent the local police department to the woman’s home for no reason.

While officers spoke with the family member outside, Walsh allegedly re-emerged flailing her arms and calling the family member unflattering names for women and their private parts. She also allegedly told the woman, “I will f--- you up,” in front of the officers.

After peacocking to the middle of the roadway, Walsh was arrested by the officers.

She allegedly tried to pull away and had to be brought to the ground for handcuffing.

Writer says too many politicians rely on social media to govern Happy 133rd birthday EDITORIAL

F

orgive us, if you will, for a moment. A couple of days ago — May 14 to be exact — The Observer turned 133. On that day in 1887, The Arlington Observer, a one-page broadsheet newspaper began with minimal coverage of Arlington, Kearny, Harrison and East Newark.

Since then, we’ve expanded to cover North Arlington, Lyndhurst, Belleville and Nutley and we’ve also covered towns such as Bloomfield and Rutherford in the past.

We remain one of the oldest businesses in West Hudson and make no mistake about it — despite the misnomers, we are, indeed, a business, though there are some who think we’re operated by the government.

We’ve survived two World Wars, a depression, several recessions and now, it seems, a global pandemic. And we hope to be around to serve this wonderful community 133 more years.

However, we’ve come to a stark realization. We’ve known it a while. We’re sharing it now.

While this newspaper has adapted to a fast-moving technological world, there’s still nothing like an oldfashioned print newspaper.

In fact, many of our readers, including people of all ages, only read our print product. And in the last two months, they’ve relied on our print coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic to keep up with what’s going on locally.

Which leads to the point of this editorial.

Without naming names, there are numerous people out there in elected office who have come to the conclusion that use of technology, namely social media, is the most effective way to communicate. And while it has its distinct advantages, social media only reaches a limited audience.

There have been some in leadership positions who have tried to imitate the President of the United States by only reaching out to the populous with social-media posts.

Indeed, this is a good thing for those on social media, but in doing so solely, thousands of people are being forgotten by leaders. Ask anyone who lives in a senior citizen building in any of our towns if they’re on Facebook. The numbers who are will be extremely low.

So as we pass our 133rd birthday, we offer this simple reminder: If you think you’re reaching people by social media alone, think again. You’re ignoring thousands of people. There’s nothing like a good old fashioned newspaper to get the word out to the masses.

Then again, maybe there’s a reason why some only communicate by Facebook.

We just can’t think of one that’s legitimate.

To the Editor: I don’t know the agenda of other local political leaders, but I am disappointed in that of North Arlington.

I was a telephone recipient of two messages from Mayor Daniel H. Pronti. However, some neighbors did not receive such phone calls.

I will summarize the information received in the phone calls.

The “North Arlington parks” — these three words are an exact quote — are opened, then closed, playgrounds are closed, keep social distancing, etc. and North Arlington will have a huge celebration when this is all over.

I waited in vain for a further dialogue informing NA residents of a plan in place to send help or provide resources to those who are in need due to the loss of income and the quarantine orders of the pandemic.

Based upon the resources usually available to NA senior citizens, this should not come as a disappointment. For example, senior programs are closed for the summer as well as our Saturday library. These are important resources of personal outlets I feel some entitlement to as a taxpayer.

Perhaps I am out of place in such thinking, and if so, I apologize to our leaders.

They should have a public notification system, or a phone chain of some sort, to let each household be a recipient of such news.

afford food — I asked about our town’s food pantry. I never received his reply. So I phoned the town administrator and found out that in several days, there would be a food donation drop off in the parking lot by the police station.

When I asked how this info was being publicized, I was told social media.

Does everyone in town have a computer and subscribe to social media? No! Obviously, not me. I was also told in my phone call that residents should register their phone numbers with town hall. How was that info put out there?

To me this is a demonstration of passive leadership.

I am not saying that running a town is easy, but look at Gov. Andrew Cuomo, of New York, taking unprecedented actions and demonstrating strong leadership. Like I said, I truly am not aware of the political systems, but I do see that there are needs of some who are not being served or informed. One big need is that of seniors who do not drive and need transportation to doctors for example.

I do not think the NA senior bus provides for that, though I could be wrong. We pay high taxes in this town by comparison.

I am a member of Rutherford’s Kip Center which wonderfully resulted in the center contacting me to see if I was in need during the pandemic. Kudos to them!

GAP It’s time to reopen our state

Q

uarantine, lockdowns and curfews have become the norm here in New Jersey and other states.

They have to come to an end sooner rather than later.

New Jersey has over 145,000 cases of COVID-19 and this number has been slowing in growth over the past month.

On April 4, COVID-19 spiked and there were hundreds of new cases a day for about a week and a half.

How many of these cases were asymptomatic, mild symptoms and extreme cases?

I think it matters.

And this month, on May 16, there were 1,100 new cases which are a quarter of the increases seen in April.

And unemployment rates by county range from 3.5% to 11.4% which is just unacceptable, along with, according to NorthJersey.com, 1 in 10 New Jersey residents applying for unemployment.

Unemployment nationwide is 14.7% and is only going higher the longer this lockdown persists.

Along with this, oddly, some of the lowest numbers of flu and pneumonia cases have been reported, it seems ever.

Understandably, many states, take New York as an example, are very tepid about opening up businesses and their states in general, but with cases on a decline, now seems like a better time than ever.

Because at this point, I’m done putting up with government-enforced lockdowns with kids not going out of their homes to a park in two months with some being locked up and put in jail for

simply trying to exercise and get some physical activity in, as many kids lack yards. myself being one of those.

I, personally, was recently kicked out of Westwood High School’s field by a passing police officer and am only now, weeks after the incident, able to go outside without fear of a cop telling me to vacate.

The lockdown, however, has more of an effect on not just kids wanting to get a run in, but parents not able to put food on the table and hardly make ends meet with no source of income.

This has led to protests around the nation with desperate people wanting to reopen their businesses and get back to work, not only for themselves, but their workers.

And at this rate, many states’ small businesses probably won’t be able to recover from the quarantine — at least not quickly.

Lest we forget that it’s not just the business owner who suffers — their employees will also feel the sting of a lost job and won’t be able to provide a roof over their or their children’s heads.

The lockdown has to go.

Many businesses will be sunk and with that, people will be living in poverty and won’t just be dying of COVID-19.

Quarantine is the holding of sick people, lockdown is a holding of healthy and ready to work citizens. Now it would be alright for immunocompromised people, diabetics, and the like to self-isolate, but for those who are not high risk for the Coronavirus, such as myself, a healthy16-year-old, why are we being forced into lockdown?

Many states are also refusing to prescribe a potential cure which could help limit

the spread of COVID-19, hydroxychloroquine.

Hydroxychloroquine is a malaria drug that has been around for over six decades and is showing promise as being a stopgap for people with the Coronavirus as a cure for the current moment

until a proper vaccine is developed.

Robin Armstrong is a physician who was called out in Texas to visit a nursing home that was housing Coronavirus patients. There he used hydroxychloroquine to great effect with all 39 cases being

treated with no side effects.

And along with that, it has been shown to have worked with another Texas doctor, Ivette Lozano, who has treated patients with COVID-19 as well using hydroxychloroSee GAP, Page 15

Kearny Elks’ food drive helps feed scores of families

By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com Melanie Pasquarelli and the Kearny Elks recently collected more than 1,600 items that were donated to the fused Kearny Food Pantry.

Each Friday, from 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., the pantry, which takes place at the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington, 663 Kearny Ave., Kearny, has been distributing food to local residents, no questions asked.

It all became this combined pantry — a mix of several local churches — when the pandemic began more than two months ago.

The lines, each Friday, which begin on Kearny Ave-

nue at the PBGC entrance to the church, now wrap around the body of the church, onto Laurel Avenue to the west.

It’s a very difficult situation to observe because the longer lines mean more and more people are in need of emergency food.

But thanks to the generosity of the good people of Kearny, like Pasquarelli and the Kearny Elks, the food supply was made much greater.

We asked Pasquarelli about why and how the Elks’ collection came to be.

••• The Observer (TO): How did you decide on a food drive?

Melanie Pasquarelli (MP): At the beginning of this epidemic, one of the first

events that the Kearny Elks had to cancel was our Health Fair. During that event, we provide free fruits, vegetables and health screenings.

With everything being communicated, we felt that it wouldn’t have been safe to gather, but we immediately realized that there was still a need for food our community.

So we took the $1,200 of funds that were earmarked for that event and donated them to a local food pantry.

Only days after we provided that donation, the entire state was faced with new restrictions and most of the people that I knew became either furloughed or unemployed overnight. One of my good friends has been

involved with the Kearny Interfaith Network (KIN) which around the same time was instrumental with aligning the many food pantries that were already serving the Kearny community at various different locations and on different days of each month.

KIN realized that the need for food was going to become a huge concern and adhering to social distancing was going to key to helping everyone in need.

So they were able to work on the collaborative effort to bring all of these different institutions together for one common cause and to create a consistent schedule so that all recipients would be able get the food they desperately needed.

When I looked at the way that our community had changed overnight and how much damage this pandemic had done to everything that we valued, I reached out to see what was needed and how the Elks might be able to add value.

The individuals who were involved with KIN were doing an amazing job getting the food to the people, but they were being faced with some new challenges that we never experienced within this country before, food shortages and food limita-

tions.

The first need that was brought to my attention was the need for smaller 2 lb. bags of rice.

KIN wanted to have the smaller bags so they could package them up for the individuals who needed them, but many of the local stores that had rice were limiting the sales due to concerns about not having enough.

With all of the work that the Elks have done, I immediately contacted individuals within our network to see if we could help. The same day that we realized that there was a shortage on rice, the Elks were able to obtain over 150 bags of rice to be used that same week.

When I thought about how challenging it would be for the KIN volunteers to continue to source the food, I realized that if we tapped into the Kearny community and used our network of members we might be able to ensure that food shortages wouldn’t hold back Kearny residents from getting food.

If the Kearny community knew that the food pantry was having difficulty getting particular foods, they would use their network and find a way to obtain them.

Kearny’s talented twosome headed to college hoops Osorio off to Moravian; Huancaya heads to Rutgers-Newark

NA’s Addeo earns Academic All-CACC for Felician Billy Addeo had just finished playing hockey after his junior year of high school at Paramus Catholic, when he came up with a unique way of keeping in shape during the off months from hockey.

“A lot of the hockey players at school all played lacrosse,” said Addeo, a native of North Arlington.

“So I wound up playing lacrosse.”

There was only a slight problem with that picture.

Addeo had never played lacrosse before, not for a single minute.

“I knew nothing about lacrosse,” said Addeo (pronounced AH-DAYO). “It was definitely an experience,” Addeo said.

And of course, what position on the field did Addeo decide to play?

“I wound up being the goalie,” Addeo said.

It has been said and duly noted that being the goalie in the sport of lacrosse is perhaps the most dangerous and most thankless position anyone can play in organized team sports.

It’s like being the bulls’ eye at a rifle range or target at a carnival dunk tank. You are asked to do anything to prevent this ridiculously hard rubber ball from going into a small goal, coming at you at supersonic high

rates of speed from all sorts of angles.

Did we mention that the ball is deceptively hard?

Of course, it is made of rubber, but it’s not exactly a Spaldeen.

Addeo was more clueless than Alicia Silverstone was in that funny teen movie of a decade ago.

“When I signed up, I had no idea what it was like,” Addeo said. “If I thought about it a little more, I probably wouldn’t have done it. But I knew I didn’t want to play any offseason sport. I was getting the chance to play lacrosse with my hockey teammates.”

There were times that Addeo wanted to know if he needed to have his head examined.

“I didn’t know how hard that ball could hit you,” Addeo said.

And lacrosse goalies are not as well protected as his ice brethren. In fact, the hockey scorekeeper wears more protective equipment than the lacrosse goalie.

A lacrosse goalie gets a helmet and facemask like the hockey goalie. Of course, there’s a stick and a catching glove.

By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com It’s very rare when the Kearny High School girls’ basketball program sends two products off to play women’s college basketball in the same season.

But that is what will happen this fall, when Kearny grads Samantha Osorio and Eliana Huancaya enroll in college with the intent of playing highly competitive

college basketball – Osorio at Moravian College and Huancaya at nearby Rutgers-Newark.

Both Osorio and Huancaya had sensational senior seasons for the Kardinals last winter, who won 18 games.

Osorio averaged 12.2 points and 10 rebounds per contest and had 10 games where she recorded a double-double (double figures in points and rebounds).

The 5-foot-9 Osorio weighed other offers before settling on the school located in Bethlehem in Pennsylvania.

Osorio said that she was introduced to Moravian through Kearny assistant Theresa Hrubash, the former Nutley High School head coach who was also an assistant coach at RutgersNewark for several seasons.

Hill said that it was fun to watch Osorio develop into an All-Hudson County player.

“It’s been really tremendous,” Hill said. “She capitalized on her athleticism and devoted her time to becoming a better player. She’s been all-in and showed how much she loved the sport. She turned just her athletic skill into basketball skill. She’s a modest kid. Deep down, I hope she can realize her true potential. She had a tremendous year and it’s great to see the improvement she’s made.”

Hill, who was a standout Hall of Fame player at Pace University during her heyday, sees Huancaya as a passfirst type of point guard.

“I think Eliana loves having that point guard role,” Hill said. “She already has great ball handling skills.

She’s fast and doesn’t lose the ball often. I think it’s safe to call Eliana a “workhorse.”

She makes the plays that make the team around her better. We were just lucky to have two great players at the same time.”

Neither player thought that there would be a day

where they would be talking about them becoming college players.

“No, no way,” Osorio said.

“In the beginning, I had no idea what I was doing. I guess I just decided to put in the work to make it happen.”

“It feels really great that we were able to connect and share this together,” Huancaya said. “We’re both getting this great opportunity. I’m really excited for the both of us.”

Both have similar goals in college, with both looking to study health sciences in college. Osorio wants to get into the field of athletic training. Huancaya will take her health sciences background hopefully into medical school one day.

There’s only one downside to the two seniors leaving Kearny now.

“It’s a little disappointing that we won’t walk up together to get our diplomas,” Huancaya said. “It’s a little upsetting that we’ll miss out on all the graduation things.

But I am also looking forward to starting college.”

And playing basketball in college come November.

“I’m optimistic,” Huancaya said.

“That game really gave me the confidence that I could do it,” said Huancaya, who had 10 points and 13 assists that game. “I knew I had been practicing all season, so I knew I could do it. Once I got in, I had no nervousness and it really boosted my confidence.”

Kearny head girls’ basketball coach Jody Hill enjoys the fact that she is sending two players off to the next level from the same class.

“It’s pretty unique,” Hill said. “It’s really a special moment. It was fun to watch and was fun to watch them play together. They really bonded over the years and became really good friends.

Nutley PD warns residents to lock cars

olice in Nutley are advising residents that unlocked vehicles are being burglarized throughout the township during overnight hours.

Police Director Alphonse Petracco and Chief Thomas Strumolo say there has been an increase in reports that vehicles had been entered and items stolen over the past two weeks.

Although a 19- and 20-yearold from another community

have both been arrested and charged with burglary, police say there have been other illegal entries after their arrest.

On April 30, vehicles were entered on Duncan and Lovell; on May 1, Lakeside and Cleveland; May 5 on Chestnut and Beech and most recently, police are investigating entries on Raymond and Overlook.

Strumolo requests that if anyone has surveillance of the incidents on any of these dates to contact detectives at (973) 284-4940. He also again advises residents to lock ve-

Gradual reopening of churches is underway Catholic churches in Hudson, Bergen, Essex and Union counties have begun to reopen to the public, according to a the first prong of a three-phase plan announced last week by Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, the archbishop of Newark.

(Only information about the first phase has been made known.)

This past Sunday, May 17, phase one reopened churches in the archdiocese for private prayer only, following all public health guidelines and once pastors determine they may safely do so. As part of phase one, the sacrament of reconciliation also may be offered if social distancing may be maintained and masks are worn. Most parishes will continue to offer live streams of Sunday Masses until the final phase is implemented.

An archdiocesan task force has continued to monitor the expert guidance of public health officials and federal and state public officials, who have cautioned not to rush into reopening churches before manageable safety protocols may be put in place, the cardinal said.

All pastors, administrators, chaplains and other leaders are expected to follow these directives without exception: • Cardinal Tobin continues to dispense the faithful from the obligation to attend Mass on Sunday as well as from “Easter duty” (the obligation to receive Holy Communion during the season of Easter).

• Churches may be opened solely for personal prayer during limited and designated hours. Individuals and families may enter the church for quiet prayer only. During opening hours, a parish staff member must be physically present in the church to ensure social distancing and sanitizing. No gatherings are

permitted.

• In accordance with national, state and local health directives, those who show symptoms of COVID-19 or who have been exposed to an infected person are not permitted to enter the church for 14 days.

• Holy water fonts must remain empty until further notice.

• Hand sanitizer should be made available throughout the church.

• Public celebrations of liturgies, devotions or other group prayer are not permitted at this time.

• Masks must be worn by all while in the church and are asked to bring their own hand sanitizer or wipes.

• All must maintain social distancing (six feet) between each person or family while in the church.

• Pastors will ensure there is prominent notification within the church regarding the requirement of masks and social distancing.

• Pews, door handles and knobs, restrooms and high-traffic areas of the church will be wiped down and sanitized at regular intervals, along with the removal of trash and other items from pews.

• The sacrament of reconciliation may be offered at specified and limited times.

• Confessionals may not be used.

• Social distancing must be maintained by those waiting for confession.

• Masks must be worn by the confessor and priest hearing the confession.

Cardinal Tobin and the archdiocesan task force are currently determining the timing for the implementation of the next two phases and they’re planning for how public worship will be celebrated with respect to any new regulations.

Phase two will incorporate the celebration of weekday Masses. Phase three will permit Sunday Masses.

people who donated food told my husband that they originally were from Kearny, but currently live in Sussex County. They saw our flier and felt the need to come by with donations to help their hometown. That is what makes this town great, the commitment that we have to help our own.

• On May 11 at 1:48 p.m., Officers John Fearon and John Donovan were dispatched to Walmart on a report of a shoplifting.

After conferring with store security, the officers tried to stop Qyneesha S. Myers, 37, of Newark, in the parking lot.

Myers allegedly ignored orders to halt and continued walking away from the store.

When the officers caught up with Myers, she reportedly tried to resist arrest by pulling her arms away and trying to break free. Her resistance was futile.

Officers charged Myers with robbery and resisting arrest after security guards reported they had watched her conceal $1,134.97 worth of merchandise in shopping bags and try to high tail it without paying. When the two guards tried to stop her from leaving, Myers allegedly pushed one of them and threw a rope

stanchion at the other before making off into the parking lot.

Myers was remanded to the Hudson County Jail.

• On May 11 at 3:59 p.m., Officers Sean Kelly and several back-up officers were dispatched to BJ’s Wholesale Club on a report that store staff were “rolling around” with someone. Officers arrived to find Ahmir Harris and Jakai Z. Thompson, both 19 and of Newark, jumping around and shouting at BJ’s staff while a long line of customers awaiting entry to the store looked on.

Store security accused Harris and Thompson of misdeeds. When Officer Kelly tried to get the other side of the story, Harris and Thompson reportedly tried to walk away and shouted at the officer about a bag having been stolen and them having been assaulted.

Harris and Thompson allegedly declined to assist in de-escalating the situation and continued shouting insults, curses and homosexual slurs at store staff and riling up the crowd. Thompson was

found to be wanted by Essex County for receiving stolen property, and Allentown and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for larceny.

Harris was initially evasive in providing his pedigree information and was later found to be wanted by Allentown police (auto theft) and Plainfield court (obstructing, $750 bail). Both men were also charged with disorderly conduct and as fugitives from justice in the newest incident.

With matters calmed, officers learned from store staff that Harris and Thompson allegedly walked past a long line of customers waiting to enter the store and then bypassed a security checkpoint, ignoring the guards’ attempts to stop them.

When asked to leave the store, the two allegedly became aggressive with staff.

Harris also allegedly exposed his genitals toward store staff.

Both men were charged locally on summonses and held for an extradition hearing on their Pennsylvania charges.

Dets. Dave Bush and Mike Andrews were driving near Forest Street and Seeley Avenue and reportedly saw Destiny J. Arguello, 19, of Harrison, leaning out the passenger side of her best friend’s ride (yeah, I just did that) un-seatbelted and throwing something out of the car.

When the officers pulled over the Audi, they said they smelled marijuana and quickly found five plastic containers and two hand-rolled cigars of marijuana (60 grams total) in Arguello’s purse. Arguello was charged on summonses with possession of marijuana over 50 grams, possession with intent to distribute, intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of drug paraphernalia and for not wearing a seatbelt.

Arguello was later released.

Her friend was not charged.

• On May 14 at 5:01 a.m., Officer Nicole Williams, on patrol at Passaic Avenue and Park Place, saw a woman in all black emerge from behind a parked car in the Riverbank Park parking lot. The woman was followed by a man who

appeared to be pulling up his pants.

Officer Williams made inquiry of the two and Justin R. Parkinson, 28, of Newark, told her that he had just urinated because he couldn’t hold it any longer. Parkinson was found to be wanted by Passaic County Court and Wayne Court. The woman, later identified as Angela M. Pillegi, 31, of Newark, was wanted by Sussex County Court, Sussex Combined Courts and Newton Court.

Incident to arrest, officers said they located two hypodermic needles in Parkinson’s backpack and three hypodermic needles, two crack pipes and a ball of copper inside Pileggi’s backpack. Parkinson was charged with possession of hypodermic needles and urination in public.

Pileggi was charged with possession of hypodermic needles and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Parkinson was turned over to the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office and Pileggi was turned over to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office.

But that awful night when Keith died is one Auteri still remembers fondly. Because just hours before he died, Von Rapacki had told Auteri that he just bought a suit.

“It was for my wedding, which would take place five days later,” Auteri says.

“I was just finishing up a 3 to 11 p.m. shift. We used to have eight-hour shifts, unlike our 12-hour shifts now. It was about 10:30 p.m., and I talked to Keith (on the phone while I was) at the gas pump. I was there to refuel my vehicle. We were talking about an episode of show on Comedy Central we saw. We both loved the show. We were laughing.

“And that turned out to be the last time I would ever hear his voice.”

Von Rapacki was found

dead the next morning by his own dad. Auteri says Von Rapacki had completed an intense physical in the police academy, circa 2001.

He was in excellent shape, excellent health. He wasn’t remotely sick. There were absolutely no signs he was in any kind of trouble.

Von Rapacki apparently suffered from an ailment called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. It wasn’t well known back in 2003. Medical journals now describe it as an ailment that makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood properly to the rest of the body and as one that often goes undiagnosed, as it did in Keith’s case.

Much more is known about it now.

But without the tests, it’s a silent killer — and it is one that ultimately cost Keith his life when he was just 29, in the prime of his life, just a few years on the force. So much was ahead for him.

As knowledge about the virus, its treatment, or a vaccine develops, we will adjust appropriately, and hopefully soon we will be able to effectively prevent this disease, as well as treat it.

Auteri recalls how he and Keith also had a shared interest in wave runners.

“We’d ride together in Barnegat Bay, in Seaside,” Auteri says. “Those were great times. Keith was just never negative. He represented everything that is good in a human being.”

Fast forward, now, to last week.

Chief Richard L. Jarvis was instrumental in having a new police vehicle dedicated to Keith’s memory. In all irony of ironies, it was Jarvis, back in 2003, who was the first to be dispatched to the Von Rapacki home the morning Keith lost his life.

All were patrol officers at the time.

And now, 17 years after his death, to the day, May 12, 2020, Mayor Robert B. Giangeruso, Jarvis, Von Rapacki’s parents Jo-Ann

it could have been a true bummer. But Auteri says Keith was the kind of guy who would not have wanted things to change on his account.

“He wouldn’t have wanted me to be upset,” Auteri says. “And I know he would have known it would weigh on me. He wouldn’t want his passing to interfere at a happy moment. That’s the kind of guy Keith was.”

And though Von Rapacki wasn’t able to wear that special suit he bought, he was there in spirit at the wedding. And, nearly two decades later, he’s still near and dear to Auteri’s heart.

Their friendship, after all, is one that spread from the late 1970s when the two were students in grammar school and that lasted through high school and beyond. They both graduated from Lyndhurst High School in 1991. And except for a two-year stretch when Van Rapacki’s family moved to a different part of town,

and George, Auteri and scores of other members of the Lyndhurst PD were on hand for a special, socially-distant ceremony outside Town Hall to be dedicated in Keith’s memory.

The enormous, refurbished GMC, now says “In memory of Officer Keith Von Rapacki 097” on its front grill. That “097” was Keith’s badge number when he was on the job. And it’s the vehicle’s ID number now. The whole project came about, Auteri says, because of the efforts of Lt. Paul Haggerty.

“The vehicle design was spectacular and I can’t thank Lt. Haggerty enough for making this happen,” Auteri says. “Today’s ceremony had so much meaning to Keith’s family and I’m extremely grateful that Mayor Giangeruso, Chief Jarvis and our officers have committed to keeping his memory alive and well.”
