Take a moment, if you would, to think about what life has been like since around March 12, 2020. Go ahead. Meditate on it for a moment. Stop reading — and them come back to finish this story. Take as long as you’d like. Feel how you’ve felt.

Smell the smells that come to mind. Hear the words you’ve

heard spoken from loved ones, friends, on TV. See the sights of empty streets, long lines waiting to get into the supermarket, bare shelves that don’t have fruits, meats, paper towels, toilet paper. Go ahead — take your time. When you’re ready, move on to the next paragraph.

Now it’s time to be honest.

Those feelings had to include stress.

Perhaps anxiety.

Maybe fear.

Certainly uncertainty.

For many, these feeling — perhaps it’s the first time you’ve felt them in a very long time. For the younger generations, maybe it’s the first time you’ve ever felt any of those feelings.

NORTH ARLINGTON SCHOOLS

And, the same may be said of educating the children of the world, where learning went from the traditional classroom environment to a virtual setting for all.

Dr. Stephen Yurchak, superintendent of schools in North Arlington, was the first school leader to reach out to The Observer to let us know that despite many challenges, it’s going as well as one could expect. We asked Yurchak

to give us some insight as to the specifics — and what we found was extraordinary.

Here’s a recap of Yurchak’s vision of the last six+ weeks along with the questions we asked of him. (That’s him with other administrators in the photo in the bottom-right spot having a Zoom meeting.)

Generally speaking — how challenging has it been for you and other admins since school switched to distance learning? For teachers? For the students?

Although there have been challenges presented at all levels, everyone continues

to rise to the occasion.

One of our very first initial challenges, and most heartwarming event, was making sure that all of our students had a device to use at home along with “hotspot” devices, if needed. On a Sunday afternoon at North Arlington Middle School, each board of education member, administrators and staff helped to provide over 200 Chromebooks to our families. Everyone was supportive and appreciative that not one child would be left without access to virtual learning.

How are classes taking place? Are teachers using Zoom?

Our PreK-2 students are using ClassDojo and our students in grades 3-12 are using Google Classroom. At the moment, teachers have the option of using several platforms, such as Flipgrid, Screencastify and Edpuzzle.

We are also looking to expand those platforms to Google Meet to further adapt to virtual learning.

When students have questions or difficulties, they can raise their hands, see teachers after class etc. How are teachers/ students handling student difficulties?

Our teachers have been working tirelessly to meet the demands of virtual learning.

Their accomplishments, in such a short time, speak volumes to their dedication to our children and the profession. Regardless of the online platform being used by a teacher, all students have the ability to ask questions and interact. We have been introducing new pathways for our teachers to strengthen communication with our students and we’re hopeful that continued adjustments will make the learning experiences better for our students.

How has attendance been? Is it close to normal? Have there been some students who have disappeared?

One of our primary concerns before entering virtual learning was making sure that all students were accounted for and safe. Due to our early efforts in

stressing the importance of daily attendance checkins, we have had very few absences over the past few weeks. Whenever we don’t hear back from a student, we contact his/her family. If needed, we’ll work with the North Arlington Police Department to request a wellness check. I’m proud to say that all of our children are accounted for and safe.

Are you and the district planning to open the school year, next year, at home? How is that going in general?

On behalf of the entire school community, we all want to be back into school as soon as possible, but it must be deemed safe to return. We will continue to follow the guidance of our governor and trust that a decision to return to school will be made once our children and staff will not be at-risk.

Are there any teachers/ students who you’d like to single out for outstanding achievements through distance learning?

We are very proud of Gabby Kaminski, a 10th-grade student at North Arlington High School. In between managing her online learning, she has been voluntarily producing homemade masks for healthcare professionals, first responders and essential workers. Her efforts exemplify the common good within North Arlington as a community. We are proud to call her a Viking. (Editor’s note: Kaminski’s efforts were recently featured in a frontpage story in The Observer.)

We are also very proud of Amanda Frazao, a 4th-grade teacher at Roosevelt Elementary School. After being selected by the New Jersey Department of Education to share a virtual lesson on NJTV, we are encouraging students to tune in this Tuesday, April 28, at 10 a.m. and wear their favorite superhero attire. Frazao is a consummate professional and she truly loves her students. We are all excited to see her upcoming virtual lesson.

What are the plans, if any, for students who would have graduated in 2020?

Our principals will be working with our PTOs and other parent organizations within the schools to develop memorable experiences to highlight our students’ culminating achievements. A virtual graduation is a possibility, but it is all contingent on our governor’s guidance. If recommendations become more relaxed in the coming weeks, we would love to have some sort of gathering, possibly in vehicles at a set location. Nothing will replace a student’s joy of walking across a stage in front of their families and friends, but we are going to try our best to make this year’s

graduation as memorable as possible.

Give us your personal and professional opinion of distance learning. Is it your hope this is a one-off? Is it working? Could this be a way to handle things when students are sick to have them attend classes virtually instead of “absences?”

My sincerest hope is that we never have to encounter a pandemic like this again that forces schools to be closed.

Although we did a great job on ensuring that all students in North Arlington have access to Chromebooks and hotspot devices, if needed, nothing replaces working with children face-to-face. Those personal interactions are needed to build character, while supporting social and emotional development. As we move forward, now knowing that it’s possible for schools to encounter another virtual learning situation, we will be devoting countless hours of professional development toward this topic next school year. Even if it’s never utilized in this type of scenario, it will be greatly beneficial for our students and staff to further enhance technology throughout North Arlington Public Schools.

Michele Higgins, president of the NA Board of Education, also chimed in.

“It is impressive that our district was able to, in a matter of days, distribute technology, provide staff professional development and transform instruction to ensure continuity in student learning during the pandemic,” Higgins said.

Nutley’s Dr. Michael Giuliano dies aged 64 Belleville High School alum was grad of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine

D

r. Michael Gerard Giuliano, a passionate doctor, a dedicated husband and loving father and grandfather, who for many years practiced medicine in Nutley, died Saturday, April 18, 2020. He was 64.

Dr. Giuliano (seen in photo to right) was born Oct. 18, 1955, in Newark to Dominick and Mildred (Cappetta) Giuliano. He grew up in Belleville and graduated from Belleville High School in 1973.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University

and his doctorate of osteopathic medicine from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1981. He had a successful general and geriatrics practice in Nutley, serving many generations of families for almost 40 years.

Dr. Giuliano had a passion for all things physics and voraciously read all books he could find from Einstein to Degrasse Tyson. For those visiting his office, it was hard to miss his love for Charles Schulz, as evidenced by his extensive Peanuts collection.

He will be remembered for his quirky sense of humor, passion for medicine and his compassionate spirit.

a breed of a doctor he was.

“He was what every doctor should be,” Feorenzo said of Dr. Giuliano. “When you were in the exam room with him, he gave you his full attention. He spent time getting to know you and what ailed you. He always treated me and all his patients as if we were family. He was an amazing doctor and it will be impossible to replace him.

I’m not sure what I will do now that he is gone.

“Losing him has been very difficult.”

Mary Louise O’Shea was also a patient of Dr. Giuliano’s. She says it has not yet sunk in that the man who fought so that others might live is gone.

“He was unbelievably kind,” O’Shea said. “I had hoped he would be my physician for the rest of my life, especially because he was so young, and I am getting a little older now.

I am going to miss him terribly. No one will ever be able to replace him.”

Several days ago, in tribute to Dr. Giuliano, a procession went past his office on Franklin Avenue.

People stood in silence as emergency-response vehicles went by. It was a fitting tribute to the man who spent a lifetime saving lives, only to lose his own during this hideous pandemic known as COVID-19.

Dr. Giuliano was preceded in death by his father, Dominick, and his

mother, Mildred.

He is survived by his wife, Marylu (Olivo Silfies); his five children, MaryJane Silfies Whyte (Tim), SallyAnn Silfies, Danielle Giuliano Massey (Scott), Michael (Harrison Ashton) and Olivia; his grandchildren, Thomas and Olivia Whyte and Derek and Christian Massey; his brothers Dominic and Kenneth and many cousins.

The Giuliano family offered thanks to the teams at Mountainside Medical Center and Hackensack University Medical Center for providing Dr. Giuliano with the best treatment and care during his final days.

They also thanked staff at Mountainside Medical Center and Clara Maass Medical Center for their support and service of working with Dr. Giuliano to care for countless patients.

Given these unprecedented times, a small funeral service took place for his immediate family. While Dr. Giuliano has physically left this world, his legacy will live on through the Dr. Michael G. Giuliano Memorial Fund.

Coccia Realty open for business, albeit a bit differently

J

an “John” R. Kwapniewski is not one for being traditional.

And so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that he’s still open for business at the real-estate agency he’s owned since 1989, Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate | Coccia Realty, on Kearny Avenue. Not even a pandemic can stop him from selling homes, though he tells us things aren’t going to be quite the same as they might have been even two months ago.

Still, Kwapniewski, with whom we spoke on the phone during a trip he took out to Tewksbury, Hunterdon County, last week, says he already sees signs of life returning to New Jersey. And it’s made him completely optimistic.

“The last time I was out here, I may have seen two or three cars on the road with me,” Kwapniewski said of a journey he took a few weeks ago. “This time, (on I-78) there has to be 30 cars behind me and many ahead of me.

It’s like a regular day out here today. Life is coming back.”

So with Kwapniewski’s belief that life is beginning to reappear in Jersey, just

how will he handle showing homes?

He says it’s simple. He’ll show homes to one client at a time. Social distancing will be enforced. If the homeowner requests it, he’ll wear protective gear, himself, from head to toe, with masks, gloves and shoe coverings.

“Though some don’t care at all,” he said. “It all depends upon the circumstances.”

Since stay-at-home orders went into place, Kwapniewski says there was a point where sellers were anxious to get homes sold, so some took less than they might have in other circumstances. But then buyers started lining up — sometimes 40 to 60 at a time, depending on the property — an people were outbidding each other.

Still, there was a demand.

And Kwapniewski says he could tell as much from his online portal. Indeed, there were some “panic” sales, but it didn’t last too long. Now, it’s gotten back to normal already, he says.

And because of what’s happening in places like Manhattan and Brooklyn, where being holed up in a small apartment became the norm — and where quarantining was next to impossible if needed — he expects to see an increase in home sales

with people who have come to the realization that vertical living just isn’t feasible anymore.

“I recently had a nurse from Manhattan and a doctor from Brooklyn buy a place in Nutley,” Kwapniewski said.

Still, some changes had to be made — and are still in effect — during the pandemic.

Live streaming of homes by agents for buyers has become

more common and popular.

However, this system, already in place before March, is nothing like seeing a home in person.

He pointed to a family member who was looking to buy a home. Kwapniewski says she saw two virtual house tours. She loved one and she disliked the other.

However, after visiting the two locations, she wound up buying the one she disliked on the virtual tour.

“So there’s still nothing like seeing a property in person,” Kwapniewski said.

“I love this because people have been telling me for years there would come a time when an agent wouldn’t need to show homes because of technology. That just isn’t going to happen. You can’t tell just from a watching a video what a home is going to be like. Yes, the tech is beneficial, but people are always going to want to get in to see

it first.”

Now, while Kwapniewski is back and up and running, he’s not requiring his agents to be back with him. Some have decided it’s just too risky to be out and about, showing homes, in places where it’s impossible to know whether COVID-19 is present.

As such, the agents who are willing to visit homes are teaming up with agents who are working from home. The mobile agent will handle the viewings — the agents at home will do the rest.

“And this is actually great, because I’ve always put a great emphasis on the relationships my agents form with each other,” Kwapniewsi said. “They’re really working well together.

Nutley’s May 12 election will be telling as first conducted by mail-in only ballots

hen May 12 rolls around, it is going to be exciting. It’s going to be worrisome. It’s going to tell a huge story that may have implications nationwide.

For it is on that day — or perhaps it won’t be — we will learn which of the 12 candidates on the ballot will either return to the Nutley Board of Commissioners or who will join it for the first time. Four of the five incumbents seek re-election. Only Steven L. Rogers is not running again, as he pledged, when he first ran, only to serve two terms.

But here’s where it all gets interesting. For the first time, perhaps ever, a full municipal election will be conducted solely by mail-in ballots. Said ballots must be postmarked by May 12, the date of the actual election.

Presumably, many will return their ballots before the deadline. They’ve already been mailed to voters. But what happens if in the tally, there are two candidates, maybe more, who are separated by only a few votes. The presumption is all mailed-in ballots will arrive within a day or two of the deadline.

But what happens if a ballot is delayed in arriving?

Is there a waiting period? What if a winner is declared, then more ballots arrive, properly postmarked, well after May 12. What if those ballots are enough to change the declared outcome of the election?

It’s not far-fetched to believe this could happen. Think “hanging chads.” 2000. Florida.

Send an overnight package to someone via the USPS — and let us know if it really gets there the next day.

We’ve seen numerous instances where it hasn’t. And despite the pressures Postal wokers are seeing, this is nothing new of late. Late mail is the norm and has been for months. So to say mail delays could cause ridiculous trouble if there is a close election is a reality.

And, come July, we’re going to see this in a much larger form when the state’s primary is also conducted by mail only. Fortunately, the presidential candidates are already decided — but could you even begin to imagine if there was still doubt as to who the nominees were?

Here’s the bottom line — this is a recipe for disaster.

However, what happens in Nutley will tell a tale that will be undeniable. We hope and pray it turns out properly. It will paint a picture of what July and perhaps November would look like.

But we won’t be all too surprised if disaster comes May 12 — and in the days to thereafter follow.

o the Archdiocese of Newark. And the people, I am writing this message to the Archdiocese of Newark and to all the parents, children and relatives of those who had loved ones who have died to say how I feel about the cemeteries being closed for so long during this terrible pandemic.

Growing up in North Arlington, there was not a lot of things to do when sports and summer playgrounds arts and crafts were over.

My friends and I would go to a place called Eddy’s, or Borelli’s on Crystal Street and Ridge Road. There, we would all meet. My friends, a few grades up from us, used to meet there and guys who already graduated and locals already out of college would meet and eat Missy’s Taylor Ham and cheese and have a Coke to wash it down.

The juke box seemed to always being playing “Walk This Way,” by Aerosmith and things were good.

After meeting up, my friends and I would cross the street and go through the iron bars we would bend

We would watch the workers try to bend the bars back, but there was a technique used that we knew or forget it. We would laugh at them and be back an hour later. That was where everyone met. That was our hangout, and we owned it .We would go in at night and walk all over the place from Dairy Queen to Bartlett’s Hole by Park Avenue, from one end to the other many times a night, meeting several different age groups as we roamed.

the jungle area along Noel Drive and had all kinds of fun as young teenagers.

I remember one summer when I was about 15, we all met up at Eddie’s for a football game and had 14 kids ready to play. As we crossed the street and started through the bars, to our surprise, there were a lot of new six-foot pine trees planted scattered strategically to stop us from playing in the open field on Ridge Road.

We never disrupted anything there ever. It was sacred grounds to us. It was our refuge and we all felt accepted by all the thousands of spirits around us as we roamed around at night. I personally felt they accepted our live spirits and welcomed us as unafraid youthful spirits among them It sounds creepy, but it was how I and we felt and the vibe we were receiving.

Today, kids and adults — really anyone — can face scrutiny in a way no one ever had to during the 20th century and early 2000s.

The Internet has been a gateway for bullying to flourish. Back in the day — say the ’80s and ’90s — bullying couldn’t occur on the scale that it does today with it really only being able to happen at school and outside, at somewhere like a pizza place.

Today, however, bullying may happen anywhere at any time. Why? Look at the smartphone in your pocket. The computer in your home. Your child’s school laptop.

Bullying today has a myriad of ways to enter your life and it never leaves even when you’re home or hanging out with friends.

That, of course, isn’t to say that bullying still doesn’t happen in person physically or verbally.

One in three students who attended a United States middle school in the last year say they’vebeen bullied. I am one in those three.

Bullying leaves an emotional mark on a child’s life as it has mine. There are certain triggers that leaves victims with a lot of emotional baggage for the rest of their lives. Moving forward, around 14% of high school students consider

suicide, and another 7% actually attempt it. People who are bullied in school are 2 to 9 times more likely to commit suicide than those who aren’t.

There are many different ways of getting bullied. The three most common are social, verbal and online.

The social part of that refers to the way bullies will use the environment to their advantage by spreading rumors and lies about the victim, separating them more and eventually, cutting them off from the student body almost entirely.

The second, verbally, is self-explanatory, where bullies attempt to degrade the victim by slurring them and using expletives more often than not.

Lastly, online is quite possibly most harmful, is when bullies harass the victim on social media and other sources to make the victim feel hopeless and worthless.

Now bullying is a cesspit, but it’s not inescapable as there are many things that can help you or someone you know who is going through bullying.

For me, personally, it was having a sound mother who cared for me and took me out of district, well away from the school where the bullying occurred. What does this mean if you’re a victim of bullying? Tell your parent(s) or guardian(s) — or if it’s your friend who is being bullied, visit visit house and tell their parents.

school, and make whoever is in charge knowledgeable of the situation so they can help you. Make sure they take your words seriously — and make sure by following up.

Lastly, let your religious congregation know if you have one. For me, it was a big part in dealing with the depression that came with my bullying — and just knowing God loves me was enough to get through it.

Bullying is often unavoidable for young people, but there are ways you

can survive it with as few mental bruises as possible. It’s like what they say about seeing a luggage left unattended at an airport — if you see something, you must say something.

Studies have found, however, that bullying has been decreasing nationally so hopefully, at some point in the future, the number of people who deal with the emotional trauma of bullying will be an astronomical fraction compared to what it is now.

Bullying doesn’t discrim-

inate between race, class or what you do with your life.

Whether you are an athlete or an intellectual, it too often always comes knocking and finds a way in.

It’s up to you to let help in — and to put a stop to it.

8-year-old spends birthday doing for others

F

our days before his eighth birthday, Lyndhurst youngster Emilio Flores overheard his parents talking about making a donation to the local food bank to help support COVID-19 relief.

“The next day he came to us with this handwritten

letter and asked if he could use his upcoming birthday as an opportunity to collect donations for the food bank, too. So we made copies of his letter and hand-delivered them to our neighbors up and down the block,” his dad Javier Flores said.

Between word of mouth and social media, within two days, the birthday wish had spread, and cars, walkers,

bicyclists and members of the Lyndhurst Police Department started making their way down Wilson Avenue in Lyndhurst.

And the bags of food started piling up, and piling up on top of the piles.

Mixed in with the bags were balloons and cards for the birthday boy, of course.

with not only a food donation but a $100 gift card for Emilio and a tray of penne vodka for his family.

“Even the mayor stopped by,” Emilio said of Lyndhurst Mayor Robert B. Giangeruso.

Giangeruso said: “It’s great to see such an effort in Lyndhurst. Sometimes, something very good can come from something very bad.”

“We were concerned about the weather possibly washing out Emilio’s birthday wish, but then the sun came out and the whole community appeared.

Emilio’s selflessness gave us all a gift on his birthday,” said Erin Keefe, Lyndhurst mom of four and president of the Lyndhurst Board of Education.

Emilio’s mom Mayra, who is currently battling breast cancer, couldn’t be prouder of her son.

“To see such an abundance of food come together in such a short time is truly amazing.

It’s going to be hard to top this birthday,” she said.

Currently deciding upon a career as a paleontologist or a “food bank guy,” Emilio says he just wants to help people.

“People that lost their jobs still have to feed their kids.

I’m glad that families will have food to eat,” he said.

And will they ever. A rough guesstimate is that Emilio collected over 4,000 food items on his birthday. All donated food items were to be delivered to food banks in Lyndhurst and Harrison.

Keeping in mind the old adage, “It is better to give than to receive,” perhaps the day was best summed up by Lyndhurst resident Mark Dittamo, who said: “What a rush I got today. Seeing that smile on Emilio’s face was priceless. What a kid!”

Blue Tide softball: No question, improvement on tap Chris Innis is entering his third season as the head softball coach at Harrison High School and there’s little doubt that he’s already forgotten about Year Two. The Blue Tide posted a 2-16 record last year – so it’s safe to say that Innis has turned the page on last year and focused on the new campaign.

“The seniors we have were freshmen during my first year here,” Innis said.

“I think it’s important to have some sort of consistency in Harrison. I am fortunate to work with guys like Jairo (Mendez in baseball) and Nick (Landy in volleyball), who have been around for a while and have been consistent leaders. Both of those guys are easy to work with. I think it’s important for this team to understand my philosophy and understand what is expected of them.

This group of seniors didn’t win that much last year and want to go out as winners.”

Innis said that he took some time to learn from neighboring coaches.

“I picked (Belleville head coach) Chris Cantarella’s brain,” Innis said. “He was really so gracious to give me some drills to use. I’m hoping to build on that.

He was very open and friendly.”

The Blue Tide spent much of last season struggling with their hitting. It’s something that has been a focus throughout offseason preparations.

“It’s something we’ve stressed,” Innis said.

The Blue Tide will have great strength up the middle with junior second baseman Haley O’Donnell and senior Kayla Lucas.

Together, the long-time friends form one of the best double play combinations in the NJIC. “Our infield is the strongest one we’ve had,” Innis said. “We’re strong up the middle. We’re hoping our strong infield will help us make a statement.”

O’Donnell, the younger sister of 2016-2017 Observer Male Athlete of the Year Mike O’Donnell, proved to be an excellent second sacker last season.

“We’re expecting big things from her this year,” Innis said. “I think she has a little more pop in her bat.”

Lucas, the daughter of former Harrison standout athlete, Rutgers and New York Jets quarterback Ray Lucas, has enjoyed an excellent athletic career at Harrison.

Kearny softball: Looking to improve with influx of freshmen

By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com The Kearny High School softball squad suffered through an uncharacteristic season in 2019, posting a 9-15 record. The Kardinals lost their first five games of the campaign and never really recovered.

But veteran Kardinals head coach Jimmy Pickel believes that it was a one-year blip on the radar.

“I think we’re going to be pretty good,” Pickel said. “Our freshman class is outstanding.

We have five freshmen and all five will probably start. They have that kind of ability.”

Pickel was asked if he had ever enjoyed having such a talented incoming freshman class.

“No, not like this,” Pickel said. “Not to this extent. This group is something else.”

Pickel said that the team was hitting its stride, despite the youth, when the extended break began due to the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic.

“The day before we stopped, we had our best practice,” Pickel said. “I was amazed that day with the way they were all practicing. I thought we had the makings of a good team.”

Senior Olivia Montanino, the soccer and bowling star, is set to return for her final campaign as a Kearny athlete. Montanino was the top Kardinals’ pitcher a year ago.

But there are two freshmen that could step in this season and pitch considerable innings in soccer/basketball standout Maci Covello and Tianna Antunes. All three Kearny hurlers are right handed.

“Tianna played a lot of travel ball, so she’s experienced,” Pickel said. “I was looking forward to seeing the freshman perform in scrimmages, but we never got that chance.”

bulk of the work on the mound this season. He had faith in all three pitchers.

Sophomore Mikalah Franchino started most of last season as the Kardinals’ catcher, but she was being pushed by two more freshmen, namely Alex Colon and Julia Sanchez. All three are respected backstops.

At first base is senior Caitlyn Natosi. The three-year starter led the Kardinals in RBI last year.

“I was looking forward to seeing Caitlyn play this year,” Pickel said. “She dedicated her time to playing this season. She was set to have a big season for us.”

Caitlyn’s younger sister Carley, a sophomore, was the Kardinals’ starter at second base.

“She’s a good fielder who is getting better at the plate,” Pickel said of the younger Natosi.

The shortstop is freshman Jaeda Figueroa, who is the genuine article.

“This girl is something else,” Pickel said. “She has smooth hands and a great arm. She has very good work ethic. She’s a very nice player.”

“We would move Tianna around to wherever we needed her,” Pickel said. “She’s that versatile as a player.”

The left fielder is senior Phoenix Jackson.

“She started the last two seasons,” Pickel said.

But Jackson was being pushed by senior Alex Cruz, who played sparingly last season.

“She’s taken to the position well,” Pickel said of Cruz.

The centerfielder is freshman Covello, who is just a very talented athlete, coming off her fabulous freshman campaigns on the soccer pitch and the basketball hardwood.

“She’s definitely a hard worker,” Pickel said of Covello.

“I tell her to do something and she does it right away. I don’t have to wait for anything.”

The right field duties are being shared by junior Yanni Rosario, who saw some time with the varsity last year, and senior Aliyssa Rios, who joined the softball team for the first See KEARNY, Page 12

Senior Kristina Yaya and sophomore Natalie Vieira will also field key roles during the course of the now-truncated season. Yaya played some at shortstop last year and Vieira is a centerfielder/shortstop.

Needless to say, if and when the high school season begins, the Kardinals will be ready and will certainly be much improved over a year ago.

“I’m definitely looking forward to it,” Pickel said. “We haven’t given up the thought of having a season. If you give up, then the girls will give up.”

Pickel is taking a page from his former coach and mentor at Queen of Peace, namely the late Ed Abromaitis, who died suddenly last fall.

“Abro used to always say that the scrimmages will tell who gets to play,” Pickel said.

“But we didn’t have any scrimmages this year. When we get back, we’ll have to just play games right away. I also set up a really competitive schedule for this year, because I thought we were going to be pretty good. We just have to wait and see.”

“She came up to the varsity in the middle of the season,” Innis said of Leiras. “She has some pop in her bat. She likes to extend her arms a lot and hit the ball hard. We have to find her a spot somewhere. Her athletic ability gives her an advantage.”

The Blue Tide’s pitching staff will consist of senior Angela Arca, a right-

hander who was basically a junior varsity hurler last year, and sophomore Jocelyn Oquendo. Innis realizes that the Blue Tide will need more than one pitcher this season, if and when play resumes due to the coronavirus outbreak, especially since a shortened season will mean in more games over a shorter period of time.

“We absolutely need more than one pitcher,” Innis said. “The two have been working with each other to work on their pitching.”

The catcher is promising freshman Janiyah Gutierrez.

“She’s very athletic,” Innis said. “She has a tremendous arm. She moves around well behind the plate. She moves well to get in front and block the ball.”

Innis is familiar with Gutierrez because her older sister Josalyn was on the team last year and has since graduated.

The first base duties are being shared by senior Ally Huseinovic and junior Denisse Gonzalez. Huseinovic is the younger sister of 2017-2018 Observer Male Athlete of the Year Dustin Huseinovic, currently playing football at Pace University.

ELIZABETH L. (BETTY) CAHILL

Elizabeth L. (Betty) Cahill (formerly of Harrison) died peacefully on April 24, 2020, in Edgewater, after a courageous battle with dementia & most recently Alzheimer’s.

She was 86.

Betty was born July 28, 1933, in Harrison, to Elizabeth “Bessie” and Michael Canning. She attended Holy Cross Grammar School in Harrison and went on to graduate from St. Cecilia High School in Kearny. Upon graduating, she worked for “The Telephone Company” in Newark. Betty always loved New York, and soon began her dream job in NYC in the Seagram Building, which she reminisced about often in her last years.

She married and moved to the Jersey Shore, returning to Harrison in 1972.

DORIS McCRACKEN

Doris Mc Cracken (nee Kington) of Barnegat, formerly of Kearny, died away peacefully on April 20, 2020.

Doris was two months shy of her 98th birthday.

Before moving to Barnegat in 2009, Doris spent most of her life in Kearny. She was a graduate of Kearny High School.

Her first job was with the Salvation Army in New York City. Later on, she was an office manager with Garray Plastics and L&R Manufacturing, both in Kearny. After retirement at age 70, Doris returned to the Salvation Army, this time in Kearny, where she was a senior soldier. She was the Home League secretary (women’s ministry), and a bookkeeper and case worker for their Family Services Department.

She is survived by her children, a son, Robert Mc Cracken Jr., of Clark Summit, Pa., and a daughter, Cheryl Cathcart of Barnegat; five grandchildren, Chrystie, Stacey, Robert, Richard and Amanda, and nine great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her four brothers and her sister, Janet.

Doris put everyone’s needs above her own. Her kind heart and quiet strength will be sorely missed by all the lives she touched. She was the matriarch of her family and her absence will be felt deeply.

Marie E. Joch, 85, died April 21, 2020 at the Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck.

Born in Newark, she lived most of her life in Kearny before moving to Teaneck. She was self-employed and had her own cleaning service for many years.

She was a member of the Salvation Army Home League of Kearny and longtime parishioner of the First Baptist Church of Kearny and a member of their Women’s Fellowship.

Marie was the beloved daughter of the late Ruth Moffett, and the loving friend of the late Marilyn Harriman.

A private graveside service will take place at Arlington Cemetery in Kearny where she will be interred with her mother. Arrangements were under the direction of the Parow Funeral Home, 185 Ridge Road, North Arlington.

The first step in treating this problem rests with correcting any significant refractive error.

Following that, visual training may be undertaken with the goal of attaining a workable cure for the problem. If non-surgical treatment does not bring the desired results, the ophthalmologist may recommend surgical options that may bear better outcomes.

Thomas, a friend to all, is also survived by his sisterin-law, Patricia Tighe, and her husband, Charles, many nieces, nephews and “extra” children and grandchildren, whom he cared for as his own.

Rosalie (“Cissie”) moved with her family to Spring Lake Heights in the ‘50s. She was employed as an executive secretary in the RCA and S. S. Adams Novelty Company. At JCP&L, where she worked for 35 years, she became a pioneer for women, breaking the glass ceiling to become the company’s first female ResidentialBuilder Representative and later a Commercial/Industrial Representative.

She received numerous program marketing awards.

Rosalie loved all things Irish. She traveled to Ireland with her Holle cousins on her Aunt Betty’s first return trip to County Antrim which Betty had left in infancy. That emotional reunion will never be forgotten by participants on either side of the Atlantic.

In her earlier years, Rosalie loved the beach, swimming, playing the piano and horseback riding. She was especially proud of her Arabian horse, Condor el Raj. She always loved cooking, and was quite the chef.

Traveling was another of Rosalie’s passions. More recently, her travels were via television and she was most grateful for EWTN, which allowed her to attend daily Mass. Rosalie was a parishioner of St. Stephen’s Church in Kearny in her youth.

After moving to Spring Lake Heights, she attended St. Catharine’s Parish, but currently was a parishioner at St. Mark’s, in Sea Girt, where she was living to help her aunt.

Many people aren’t aware that Escherichia coli (E. coli) exists harmlessly in the intestines of healthy people and animals. Most strains of E. coli are either harmless or cause relatively mild intestinal issues. But there are a few dangerous varieties that give the bacteria its bad reputation. They are the ones that cause severe, even bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramping and vomiting even when only a small amount is ingested. Food contamination is the most common way to get an E. coli infection. Undercooked beef, unpasteurized milk, and fresh vegetables that are grown near cattle can all be delivery systems for E. coli bacteria. Symptoms usually clean up within a week, but it can be a very unpleasant week.

She was a member of Holy Cross Church and the Senior Citizens both in Harrison, active in many community events and organizations, and will always be remembered for her quick wit and great sense of humor.

Survivors include her daughter Diana Flaherty and husband James of Union Township; daughter-in-law Paula Bardzilowski (nee Plaugic) of Piscataway; and son John Miles and wife Anne of Everette, Washington.

She was the proud grandmother of 10 and great-grandmother of 15 (plus one on the way).

Because of the Covid-19 situation and to protect her loving family, friends and community, there will be no immediate services. A memorial service at a later date is planned for family and friends.

Leon Niedzinski died April 19, 2020.

He was 95.

Born in Harrison in 1925, he was one of 10 children born to Polish immigrants Sophie (nee Gawienowski) and Witold Niedzinski.

He lived in Kearny for 65 years.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Niedzinski served three years in the United States Merchant Marines from April 1943 to April 1946 as a seaman on various Liberty ships ferrying cargo and war material to ports in Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, Iran, The Suez Canal and Indian Ocean.

“The process, now, is probably simpler than it was before,” she said. “There was a process before where our consumers had to travel here, then find a spot in the parking lot, leaving time to think about the decision to walk in. Now, that’s not the case.

A phone call does it all — and we hope to get help to people shortly thereafter.”

So who are the new consumers?

“So much of what we’re doing involves people who have never had anxiety before,” Chiarello said. “So many people are feeling very isolated. So many have these feeling of, ‘Oh my God, what is going to happen tomorrow if today was this bad?’ Each day brings more to their minds, now more than ever before. And if they’re experiencing silence, with a feeling they’ve got no outlet, it can be horrible.

“No one should feel isolated. No one should feel alone.”

Who needs the most help?

Chiarello points to the reality that the highest suicide rate in America is among white men. So, in the pandemic, it should be no surprise that white men are reaching out more so than usual. They’re wondering whether they’ll be able to keep their homes, whether they can put food on the table.

Still, the therapy that CBH offers, whether it’s for white men — or anyone else — is 100%, entirely confidential.

While times are uncertain, it’s the most crucial period for everyone to talk about how they’re feeling so they can know they’re not alone, Chiarello says.

Chiarello also says children are experiencing anxiety at a greater rate, but fortunately, many school districts have programs made available to all students. Still, CBH does have a fine adolescent program.

What can people do right now?

Chiarello says she and her family have made it a strict policy to watch TV news for one hour only each weekday.

They all gather around the TV from 11 p.m. to midnight to watch a recap of the entire day’s news. They do it this way, she says, because soaking everything in, as it happens, has become even more stressful than it was when the virus first broke out.

“That and it’s highly repetitious,” Chiarello said.

Instead of watching TV news all day, Chiarello suggests people take a free, online course in something of personal interest, or doing meditations. Play games even.

Talk to family using Zoom, Facetime or Google Duo. Just back off from the news.

“Some people are watching the news from noon to 5 p.m.,” Chiarello said. “It’s just too much to process, whether it’s stories of people dying, politicians who like to hear themselves speak. There is truly plenty out there for people to do. Take advantage of that time.”

The bottom line, however, is that people need to know something.

“You are not alone, by any means, in this crisis,” Chiarello said. “Call us. We can help.”

The main reason why I am writing this story, is because I want to see my mom.

NOW! I find it outrageous and spiteful of the church and the Archdiocese of Newark to deny us our right to visit our loved ones at a time like this on our land. I don’t go to church anymore for many reasons I experienced, but my dad still goes. He tells me, there are very few people attending anymore.

I wasn’t surprised.

I know I can get in there any time I want being that the new fence is cheap aluminum now and it won’t stand a chance, but I am older now and things are very different. I worked for the Archdiocese of Newark as a construction instructor for several year, teaching people from around the globe who spoke no English but were fleeing their countries for many

reasons.

After several years, my boss at the time slipped a newspaper ad in my mailbox for a new and better job at a nearby college that was looking for an all-around building instructor to train men trying to get out of a halfway house after doing their time in prison.

I was surprised by who put this ad in my mailbox, and I thought, “Does someone not want me here?

Did I do something wrong?”

Turns out I did find out who it was — it was the director who, when I told him I was offered a new and better job, smiled and said, “I know.” It was he who slipped the ad in my box. He said they need you there and you deserve to share your skills to others in need of a new life.

The point I’m trying to make is people need to grieve and that is a sin to take that away from of us, those for whom that is all they have at this point.

Senior Jenna Williams is the team’s left fielder.

“She came out for softball for the first time last year,” Innis said of Williams. “She had two hits in her debut for us. She can hit with power.

The centerfielder is senior Nicole Terreros.

“She was up and down between the varsity and junior varsity,” Innis said.

“Her ability to field kept her with the varsity. She has tremendous speed and can catch the ball.”

The right field duties are shared between seniors Isabel Lopez and Letisha Villalta. Lopez has the better bat, Villalta the better glove.

“They’re both extremely hard workers,” Innis said.

Innis will also call on sophomore first baseman Mya Soto and senior outfielder Yara Sindi.

“Mya can catch the ball and she’s very fast,” Innis said. “Yara is a contact hitter, who bats from the left side.”

Which means one thing: Innis is trying to turn Sindi into a conventional slap hitter, in order to take advantage of Sindi’s speed.

If the Blue Tide improves this season, then Harrison will need to take better control of the ball out on the field. They committed an average of six errors per game last year – and winning teams don’t make that many miscues.

“It’s all about fundamentals,” Innis said. “We can’t give the opponent extra outs. But we have a good sense of family with this team. They want to play together, so that helps. They’re only going to get better if they have each other’s backs.”

The camaraderie that the Blue Tide enjoys will lead to more victories, even with a shorter schedule, this time around.
