And though we can’t enjoy them in person this year, and despite the annual festival being canceled, they’ll still be there in 2021 for us all, where hope springs eternal.

Belleville market cited for igonoring emergency: police

summons Friday, April 3, for reportedly violating Gov. Philip D. Murphy’s executive order to observe social distancing during the COVID-19 state of emergency, Mayor Michael

Melham’s office said late last week.

The summons was issued that day at about 2 p.m. at Garden Farm Market, 345 Franklin Avenue.

Three fatalities so far in Harrison, none yet in East Newark

T

he Town of Harrison says its Health Department continues to monitor the COVID-19 crisis on a daily basis.

As of April 5, there have been 76 positive COVID-19 cases reported.

As of that date, three fatalities were reported.

Two men have died, aged 74 and 75. And one woman has died, aged 75. The Harrison Health Department reports all three had “underlying health conditions” that may have contributed to their deaths.

Mayor James A. Fife continues to remind residents of the following: • ALL municipal government operations are continuing despite very tight restrictions implemented by Gov. Murphy to halt the spread of the virus.

• While Harrison must limit public access to town buildings, services continue.

• Police, Fire and Ambulance services continue without limitation (973-483-4100).

• The Town Clerk (973268-2425), Tax Collector (973-268-2438), Construction (973-268-2446), Finance (973-268-2433) & Vital Statistics (973-268-2444) departments remain open to serve — please call ahead for guidance.

• Meals-on-Wheels are being delivered every day (973-268-2463).

• Public Works employees are in town sweeping the streets, collecting garbage and keeping infrastructure going (973-268-2296). Please remember: do not leave discarded gloves, masks or other personal protective equipment in the streets. Sweepers can’t get to all street trash as parking regulations, as a courtesy, are still suspended.

Here’s a statement from Joe D below: “Today, Wednesday, I learned that I tested positive for the Coronavirus. I decided to get tested after experiencing a fever for several days and have been self-quarantined since March 21.

“So far, my symptoms have been mild, and I have been

feeling alright. By working remotely, I have not allowed this virus to prevent me from serving our communities and the residents of Essex County.

“II implore everyone to practice social distancing, wash your hands frequently, limit your movements in public — and stay home. We are in the midst of a public health crisis.

“The prudent actions we take now will determine how severe the impacts of the Coronavirus will be later.”

Mayor Dina M. Grilo, who is facing an epic crisis in the first four months of her mayoralty, continues to communicate with her residents.

elleville is using a unique new methodology to ensure home inspections may continue through the Coronavirus pandemic.

Construction officials are employing video-conferencing technology to safely conduct virtual home inspections in an example of the Township of Belleville’s ongoing efforts to offer essential services to residents during this health crisis.

Township Construction Official Frank DeLorenzo said members of his department have been using Zoom — a free, popular program typically used to remotely host group meetings — to

view homes’ interiors and exteriors.

The technology is important because it has allowed for the sales of homes in the township to proceed during the pandemic in which stringent social distancing measures have been enacted.

To date, township officials have conducted 12 home inspections using the remote technology.

At a typical home inspection, the official would have to walk through the inside and outside of a home with the sellers, the sellers’ real estate agent and the buyers’ real estate agent there, as well.

With the new process, a real estate agent launches Zoom on a mobile phone and begins to transmit video back to the construction offices. From

the safety of desktop computers, officials may see the home as the real estate agent walks along the inside and outside of the home.

From gutters to the basement, they get a bird’s-eye view.

“We found that it really works well because not only can we see the home clearly, but we can communicate with the agent,” DeLorenzo said.

“We can tell (the agent) to move in a certain direction or to zoom in closer if there’s something that requires a closer look. We’ll have the agent get close to the boiler so we can inspect that, for example. We’ll have the agent test the smoke detectors. We will walk the agent through every step of the inspection process.”

DeLorenzo said the township

began receiving calls from realestate agents soon after the social distancing measures were enacted.

They understood the need to adhere to mandates, but needed a way to continue to serve those looking to buy and sell real estate.

“We’re pleased with the success of these virtual inspections,” Mayor Michael Melham said. “Home sales can continue in Belleville and we don’t have to sacrifice safety — either by possibly exposing Township workers to COVID-19 or by conducting substandard inspections.

We are intent on doing whatever we can under the circumstances to continue to provide essential services to our residents.”

Belleville police chief: Please file non-emergency reports online

the municipal website in an attempt to protect those who protect and serve the township.

By going online and filling out a report at www.

police officers maintain social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Once a resident completes a report from the website, police will promptly receive the information, process it and

follow up, if applicable.

“Residents who use this new online process will save us from dispatching a police officer to interact,” Police Chief Mark Minichini said.

5 Kearny’s Coronavirus death toll rises to 5, authorities say

he Town of Kearny has a total of 144 known COVID-19 cases, with five fatalities.

In the last update, posted Friday, April 3, the town announced that the day prior alone, 38 new positive cases were reported.

Those cases included, but were not limited to: a 52-year-old male recovering at home, a 25-year-old male recovering at home, a 64-year-old male recovering at home, a 41-year-old female recovering at home, a 38-yearold male hospitalized at University Hospital, a 41-year-old male hospitalized at Saint Michael’s Medical Center, a 51-year-old male recovering at home, a 4-year-old female recovering at home.

Also, a 38-year-old male recovering at home, a 37-year-old male recovering at home, a 61-year-old female recovering at home, a 58-year-old male

recovering at home, a 37-year-old male recovering at home, a 59-year-old female hospitalized at University Hospital, a 40-year-old female recovering at home, a 17-year-old female recovering at home, a 36-year-old female hospitalized at Saint Michael’s Medical Center, a 53-year-old male recovering at home, an 85-year-old male hospitalized at Clara Maass Medical Center and a 29-year-old female recovering at home.

There are also 22 people who have tested positive who have “activities” in Kearny, but who are not residents.

Of the 5 known fatalities, the last two, according to the town, include a 71-year-old woman who was living at Job Haines, Bloomfield and a 75-yearold woman who was living at Alaris at Belgrove.

“All residents should stay at home unless they are considered an essential employee,” the Town Health Department notes. “While shopping at essential businesses such as food stores and pharmacies is permitted, residents

should limit those activities as much as possible and take precautions such as not touching public surfaces, using disinfectant and washing their hands regularly.

“Residents who exhibit any symptoms such as coughing or sneezing, or have a fever, should immediately self-quarantine at home and contact their physician. Leaving the house while showing any symptoms poses a high risk of exposing other members of the community to coronavirus.”

KPD: 44-year-old violates restraining order, sent to county

POLICE BEAT they wound up arresting a 30-year-old Kearny man who was charged with aggravated assault. Police said it was alleged, by the man’s his girlfriend, that he grabbed her by the neck, threw her onto a bed and strangled her.

Police said the victim had signs of injury, but did not require hospitalization.

The defendant, whose name is not being released (in fairness to the victim) was remanded to the Hudson County Jail, South Kearny.

A few days later, on March 26 at 3 p.m., Sgt. Jason Ward and Officers Jack Grimm and Esteban Gonzalez encountered the defendant when he arrived at the victim’s home to pick up his belongings.

Officers said arrested the defendant on the contempt warrant from March 22. He was later remanded to the See KPD, Page 16

While crime is certainly down over the last few weeks, given the COVID-19 pandemic, there were a few reports of significance over the last week or so involving domestic incidents.

On March 22 at 1 p.m., Officer Christos Manolis responded to a private home and took a report alleging a violation of a domestic violence restraining order committed by a 44-year-old Kearny man.

The suspect was not at the scene when police arrived, they said. However, it was alleged he contacted the victim several times by text message in violation of a court order.

Officer Manolis applied for a warrant for the defendant’s arrest charging him with contempt.

Then, on March 26 at 3 a.m., police said Officers Bryan San Martin and Jose Castillo responded to a Kearny home on a report of domestic violence, where

“We’re not close to flattening the infection curve in the state or in Kearny,” Santos wrote. “The New Jersey State of Emergency order, which mandates stay at home except for essential workers or visits to essential businesses like supermarkets, is only two weeks old. Although that coincides with the disease incubation period of up to two weeks, the numbers won’t go down yet because there have been delays in testing and getting test results back.

“Plus, as testing becomes more widely available in the coming weeks, there will be more infections diagnosed. So please stay home, wear gloves and a mask if you must leave your home (a handkerchief or scarf around the nose and mouth if you don’t have a mask), and always practice social distancing! We have to flatten the infection curve!”

Promotions in the HPD & HFD

Social distancing isn’t working in some places ... at all

Just before everything hit with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mayor and Council in Harrison made several protions within the town’s Police and Fire departments. In the coming weeks, look for profiles of the members who were promoted. In the meantime, we wish all of Harrison’s first responders — and first responders everywhere — all the very best as they continue to serve our communities during these trying times.

I

f there is one place you don’t want to find yourselves these days, it’s the local Walmart. And it’s not for anything Walmart’s done. In fact, they’ve taken incredibly smart steps to ensure social distancing occurs.

• There are measured lines to make certain people don’t get too close to each other — at the prescribed 6-foot distance — at checkouts.

• There are warning signs everywhere.

• There are hand wipes everywhere.

• There are cart wipes everywhere.

But there’s just one major problem.

Most people are walking around the store as if they had not a care in the world.

In a recent visit to the store, an Observer employee witnessed: • Children running around the store, unattended, bumping into to people.

• Adults touching items with their bare hands and putting them back on the shelves after also touching their mouths.

• Adults lined up for checkout with about a one-foot distance between them and the people ahead of them and behind them.

• Scores of people pushing their carts around without any regard for others who are also attempting to shop, too busy texting or talking on the phone to notice they’re inches away from others.

Folks, to say the least, the place was a cesspool, a breeding ground for this virus — and for the most part, people couldn’t care less for the orders of social distancing.

And if it’s happening at Walmart, it has to be happening elsewhere, doesn’t it?

Attend this place at your own risk.

And you had better bring gloves, masks, scarves and the like. Because if you don’t, do not expect others to care.

Has middle school changed me for the better?

S

omething changed during my third year of middle school.

My ability to focus and learn was obstructed by the need for an impressive social life. It’s eighth-gradeitis.

Much like seniors in high school, this is the year where everyone feels like they need to leave their mark.

Everyone’s preparing for graduation and competing for the spot as valedictorian.

But while our levels of excitement for high school are soaring, our levels of attention in class plummet.

Suddenly I am staring out the window or sharing

glares with my friend across the room instead of paying attention to the video about how the American Revolution reshaped the world or how much kinetic energy is in a moving rollercoaster.

Although that did happen quite often than not, in recent years.

My grades are declining more and my decision to join two sports teams this year didn’t help with my mind’s unwillingness to finish homework after school because now I came home later and more tired and unmotivated.

Waking up early or doing homework before class should’ve urged me to change that habit, but I didn’t because I liked the company of friends, I liked the idea of being liked, I wanted to feel important because somehow, I was imbued with the want for appreciation.

This may make me sound self-indulged, but I don’t think I’m the only one who wanted to be liked in middle

school. My free time was very limited as I either had a meeting for one of my clubs, a school event, practice or a game, or I made plans with someone. But I liked it that way because I felt like I had more obligation and that being outside of the house all the time somehow meant I was more accomplished.

Eighth-gradeitis seems to have hit me hard and I don’t know how to stop it. I need to stop my unhealthy habits and definitely work on my time management because

that is a skill I have yet to obtain.

I need to work harder on improving myself as a student and as a person.

I know what I need to do but, it’s hard to put words into actions.

Middle school changed me — and I have yet to find out if it was for better or for worse.

Lyndhurst mayor’s cousin dies from COVID-19

yndhurst Mayor Robert B. Giangeruso issued an impassioned letter late last week to residents of the township

where he announced the death of his cousin from COVID-19 and where he implores residents to do all that it takes to prevent the virus’s spread.

The stress that we are all experiencing because of the uncertainty that the virus causes, coupled with the isolation from our family and friends and the loss of loved ones, can be overwhelming. This is a time for unity among us and for prayers.

“I lost my cousin, Pat Paolini, to COVID-19, and I feel as many of you do, saddened and helplessness against this new and devastating illness. My cousin Pat fought the good fight, but in the end, the virus claimed his life. He was a former resident of Lyndhurst and an excellent barber. His loss is felt deeply by us who loved and knew him so well, and his energy will be missed in the world.

“The loss of my cousin Pat is representative of the many losses that we are experiencing as a community. Many of us know people who are fighting to recover from COVID-19, and unfortunately, many of us have suffered the pain of losing a loved one as well.

“However, WE ARE NOT HELPLESS AGAINST THIS VIRUS, although we may have moments where we might feel that way. We can fight this virus, but we have to do it together as a community. We each have to do our part to by staying inside in quarantine until this danger passes.

“While you may get sick and recover from the virus, you may also spread the virus to others who may not be able to fight against its devastating effects.

It is each individual’s responsibility to look out for their neighbor and practice social distancing if you must go out for essentials. Please dispose of your PPE, such as gloves and masks, properly, and do not leave what may be contaminated materials around for others to come in

to contact with.

“Doing something as simple as disposing of your gloves in a proper trash receptacle can avoid someone unnecessarily coming in to contact with COVID-19 and passing it on to others — including yourself or someone you know. We are not in this alone but together and we must be considerate of how our behavior may affect others.

“WE CAN STOP THIS VIRUS! We can stop this virus but we must follow all of the CDC’s guidelines which are posted on the Lyndhurst OEM app and our social media platforms daily.

“Please, I implore you, for my cousin and the thousands that this virus has already claimed, stay indoors and fight the spread of this enemy. Belleville baseball: A call to arms

The Belleville High School baseball team had a brilliant campaign in 2019, posting a 16-9 record and winning the Super Essex Conference-Colonial Division championship by a comfortable margin over runner-up Glen Ridge.

After winning the divisional crown, the Buccaneers will make the quantum leap up to the Liberty Division this season, facing tougher competition.

“It’s definitely a challenge,” veteran Belleville head coach Joe Sorce said.

“We lost a lot of talent to graduation, so it’s going to be a totally different challenge, but I’m really excited about moving up to the Liberty. We played the entire division last year and did well against them.”

The Buccaneers will face Newark Academy twice, Caldwell twice, as well as Cedar Grove, West Orange, Columbia and defending Liberty Division champions Bloomfield as part of the original schedule.

If and when the teams come back to play this season after the break due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Buccaneers should be competitive in the tougher division, despite the losses to graduation.

One of the main reasons why Sorce is optimistic about the 2020 season is the fact that he has as many as 12 different pitchers

available to throw. So if and when the season gets picked up and the games fall one after another, Sorce will have enough talented pitching to contend with anyone.

“Even though we lost a lot of kids, we have a solid group of kids that we feel can be contributors,” Sorce said. “We have a pretty good group of sophomores overall. Before we stopped, we had all of the sophomores competing, so that was nice to see. I think some of those sophomores will be able to help us right away.”

Leading the deep pitching staff is junior righthander Kevin Arroyo, who struck out 20 batters in 30 innings pitched last season.

“He pitched a lot of big innings for us last year,” Sorce said.

Another capable righty is senior Gio Torres, who led the team in innings pitched (31) and is the top returning Buc hurler in strikeouts with 33.

Senior Albert Carrero is another right-handed hurler who pitched quality innings last season.

“They’re all control guys,” Sorce said. “They all come in with some varsity experience.”

Junior righty Anthony Cecere also gained varsity experience last year.

The first base duties will be shared by Cullen, who played a lot there last year, as well as Gill and McChesney, depending upon who is pitching.

“David will lead this team by example,” Smart said.

“He’s our leadoff hitter and I expect him to have a much better year this year.”

When he’s not pitching, Serrano is among the best shortstops in the Hudson County Interscholastic Athletic League. He has tremendous range to go with that stellar arm. When Serrano is on the mound, then the lanky Gill moves over to shortstop.

“Gill is a big, athletic kid,” Smart said. “But there’s no doubt who our shortstop is.”

McChesney will play third base when he’s not pitching.

“He had a very good year last year,” Smart said of McChesney. “He’s like our sleeper. Jason is in great shape and he’s come ready to play this year.”

Senior Jack Michaels is the left fielder. He’s poised to be an everyday player.

himself in center,” Smart said.

The right field duties will be a combination of Drefko and a pair of seniors in Vinnie Ruccatano and Aiden Espinal.

The Kardinals won only six times in 2019. If and when the ban is lifted and the locals can return to their respective fields of play, the Kardinals will be a vastly improved bunch this time around.

“I am thinking just one game at a time,” Smart said.

The Kardinals lost their first eight games last season and never really recovered.

“I think if we can string together a few wins, we can be fine,” Smart said. “Last season was the worst season I ever had in baseball.

I can’t see that happening again. We don’t have a lot of amazing players, but we have a bunch of good players. It’s a close group that does a lot of things together. We have a group of quality kids. I think that’s our biggest weapon, the way we get along.”

Now if only the close-knit Kardinals have a season to play for.

Phillip was an assistant construction code official and plumbing inspector for the Town of Harrison. He was a member of the HarrisonEast Newark Elks, the West Hudson Plumbers Association, the Portuguese Club in Harrison and was the president of the Harrison Civil Service Union.

The beloved husband of Susan (nee Pace) and father of Corey, Sean, Joshua (Mora) and Michael (Yilmary), he was the brother of Judith Raefski, Michele Davidson and the late Stephen Karas. Also surviving are his grandchildren Ava, Kayleigh and Eamon.

The middle of seven children born to Ja-Foo and Shoo Chu (originally of Shandong Province in China) in Taipei, Taiwan ROC on Chinese New Year’s Eve recorded as Jan. 1, 1956, Lee Jan Talbot studied nursing at the Taiwan Adventist Hospital and became a dental hygenist.

Lee was a life-long student of Chinese medicine. She is survived by four of her siblings Rita, Edith, Hong Yi and Ming Jen, her husband Peter and three children (one by a previous marriage): Samuel Bruce Talbot, Sandra Emily Talbot and David Hao. The officers entered the home, which was under renovation and not currently inhabited, and found the suspect seated on the floor in the living room.

The suspect, Walter A. Torres, 35, of Newark, showed signs of intoxication and claimed he was in his home in Newark. He was arrested and charged on a summons with criminal trespass and criminal mischief.

A tenant reported his former roommate, a 29-year-old Kearny man, broke down his apartment door and assaulted him while he was in bed. The victim sustained swelling around his left eye and soft tissue injuries to his chest from allegedly being punched multiple times. The victim reported the two had been having an ongoing disagreement that preceded the assault.

The defendant was charged with burglary, criminal mischief and simple assault and was later transferred to the county jail.

Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Martin Lutz gave the operator of the market that sells fresh fruit and vegetables a warning about the need to maintain social distancing in response to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

“We got a second complaint, went there and found they were not following the guidelines,” Minichini said.

“So, OEM Coordinator Lutz issued a summons with the assistance of the Belleville police.”

The summons (A:9-49H) was issued for failure to enforce social distancing requirements during a state of emergency.

Murphy signed Executive Orders No. 107 and 108 on March 21.

No. 107, or the so-called “Stay At Home” Order, directs all New Jersey residents to remain home until further notice. The order provides for certain exceptions, such as obtaining essential goods or services, seeking medical attention, visiting family or close friends, reporting to work or engaging in outdoor activities.

No. 108 invalidates any county or municipal restriction that in any way will or might conflict with any of the provisions of Executive Order No. 107.

Minichini urged residents to still call police to report any emergency, any crime in progress or if an injury has occurred. Also, the loss or theft of prescription medication — narcotic or otherwise — cannot be reported online.

For any incident that requires a police officer to respond, residents may still dial the police non-emergency number at (973) 450-3333. For emergencies, resident should still dial 911.

Residents who don’t have access to a computer may still call the police station and give any non-emergency information to an officer over the phone.

One suggestion was to put markings on the floor near the checkout area to keep customers spaced out. Another suggestion was to station a worker outside the door who would limit the number of customers that could enter at one time.

“By issuing the summons, it shows we mean business,” Minichini said.

“We’re going along with the governor’s order. This is no joke. We want to keep people healthy. We want them to be able to get their essential goods, like food. However, we need to do it in a safe manner. If the stores aren’t going to comply, they will be issued a summons. If we have to come back for additional violations, we will shut them down.”

Meanwhile, as last week wound down, Belleville reported a total 217 positive cases and 17 COVID-19-related fatalities.

Although social distancing has proven to be the best defense against the spread of COVID-19, it comes at a price for Minichini and the members of the Belleville Police Department who embrace “community policing.”

“We miss interacting with our residents,” he said. “That close relationship we try to foster with those we serve is as important as ever. We look forward to going back to our normal police procedures, such as our bicycle patrol in which we regularly connect with residents in each neighborhood.”
