BAGS BANNED Kearny council says stores may no longer pack in plastic

A

n ordinance that will ban the distribution of single-use plastic bags at most businesses in Kearny was unanimously adopted by the governing body at a meeting of the Mayor and Council on Feb. 18.

The new law goes into effect in April 22, 2021.

According to the ordinance, single-use bags will be prohibited except: • Bags, whether plastic or not, in which loose produce or products are placed by a customer to deliver such items to the point of sale or checkout of a retail establishment, such as fruit, vegetables, nuts, grains, candy, cookies or small hardware items.

• Laundry or dry-cleaning bags.

• Newspaper bags.

• Bags used to contain or wrap frozen food, meat, fish or other items, whether prepackaged or not, to prevent or contain moisture and cross contamination with other food products.

• Bags provided by pharmacists to contain prescription drugs.

• Bags sold in packages containing multiple bags intended for use as garbage, pest waste or yard waste bags.

• To contain or wrap flowers and potted plants.

Kevin Kennedy, longtime Belleville councilman, dies at 63

I

f there were a dictionary solely dedicated to the Township of Belleville, there’d be an entry for Councilman Kevin G. Kennedy (seen at right.)

It would simply say he was Belleville.

Kennedy, who was the longest-serving councilman in the history of Belleville, died Feb. 12, 2020, after a brief illness.

He was just 63.

Though he was known for his volunteer work throughout Belleville, he did have a

paid career — he was a toll collector on the Garden State Parkway. But it was his selfless giving to make life better for residents that most define Kennedy, because for decades, that’s who he was — a true See KENNEDY, Page 3

This year’s event will span much of Kearny Ave., feature rides, more

I

f you’ve ever been to a PBA Local No. 21 event that Kearny Det. John Fabula has thrown, you know it’s always a great time (think food trucks.) And now, his most ambitious ever event is on the calendar — and it’s one for which you’ll definitely want to save the date — May 16 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

That’s the day when a good portion of Kearny Avenue will be shut down for the PBA’s Street Feast that will stretch from Quincy Avenue to Bergen

Avenue. The food trucks will be back, but Fabula says there will be a lot more for everyone, of all ages, to enjoy.

“There will be full rides, games, concessions, live music, a beer garden and much more,” Fabula says. “The beer garden will be in the parking lot across the street from Mandees and there will be music there and for smaller acts, on the steps of Town Hall. (at 402 Kearny Ave.) The food trucks will be there (as they have before) and we’re hoping to involve local restaurants. There will also be See FEAST, Page 17

Kennedy dedicated his life seeing to the well-being of all Belleville citizens and he worked tirelessly to that end.

He served as Third Ward Councilman and Councilman-at-Large for 20 years. He was also appointed as Deputy Mayor at times during those two decades.

Kennedy served as a member of the Belleville Planning Board, the Belleville Historical Commission, the Belleville Historic Society and was a member of the the Second River Joint Meeting.

Kennedy worked very closely with the current president of the Belleville Historic Society, Michael Perrone.

Perrone was stunned by Kennedy’s unexpected death and says it will be impossible to ever replace him.

“Kevin was the backbone of our Belleville Historical Society. Kevin was a Belleville icon,” Perrone said. “He first fought for the preservation of Belleville’s historic structures as a teenager in the 1970s.

Kevin went on to become Belleville’s longest serving elected official, serving the people of Belleville non-stop, at all hours of the day and night, as Councilman and Deputy Mayor, in a career that spanned 20 years.”

During that timeframe, Kennedy started his own civic association, and it’s one that will continue on its mission, despite the loss of its founder.

For nearly four decades, he provided an almost unbelievable array of services to those in need,” Perrone said. “Thanksgiving turkeys and food baskets, Toys for Tots, food pantry support, scholarships for high school students, collecting and distributing used clothes for the needy, giving rides to seniors to their doctor appointments, helping people find places to live, rescuing/fostering/ adopting abandoned dogs and cats.

“When Puerto Rico was devastated by a hurricane two years ago, Kevin immediately helped organize the relief effort which sent tons of badly needy food and supplies to the island. Kevin did it all. Incredibly proud of his Irish roots, he was a founding member of the Belleville Irish American Association.

“For almost 20 years, Kevin and I served together as aides to our political mentor, the late great New Jersey Assemblyman John V. Kelly. There we learned true public service … in a state where so many politicians snicker at the concept while they’re busy lining their pockets.”

Kevin was also integral in organizing many street-naming dedications to honor Belleville soldiers killed in action.

He was also instrumental in building the township’s Sept.

11, 2001, memorial.

In all, Perrone says he will miss his friend who so clearly left this world too soon.

Kennedy was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Marguerite Kennedy; his brother Edward J. Kenne-

dy, Sr., and the love of his life Mary Lou Hood. He is survived by his beloved granddaughter Alyssa Vega; sisters Marguerite Kennedy-Foti (Edward), Judith Greco (Vincent); nieces Donna Kennedy (Himanshu), Nicole Treadway (Adam), Amanda O’Brien (Lawrence); nephews Edward Kennedy Jr., (Kara),

John Greco, Edward Greco; great-nephews Aiden Antala, Ajay Antala, Conor O’Brien; and great-nieces Ella Kennedy and Grace O’Brien.

A memorial celebration of Kennedy’s life will take place Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Chandelier, 340 Franklin Ave., Belleville.

Because of tech advances, parents can’t understand teens’ pressures

A

s a teenager, I can say that it is not only hard to be one, but stressful and competitive.

Growing up in the 21st Century as a teenager is very problematic and worrying for many reasons — and most parents or adults these days don’t understand, which is why most teenagers don’t speak to their parents about their problems.

They grew up in a different time where there wasn’t nearly as much technology as there is today, so I believe they couldn’t be able to feel what most teenagers like me feel in this generation.

In today’s society, I believe most teenagers feel obligated to look and act in a certain way just to fit in with everyone else. We feel pressured to be “perfect” in things like academics, society and even in our group of friends.

We feel pressured by our parents to have the perfect grades to “have a better future” and although I believe that grades are important for our future careers and life, I also believe that we shouldn’t put so much pressure on ourselves where we overthink situations.

Parents don’t only put pressure on us, we also put pressure on ourselves sometimes. Besides stressing over academics, we also stress about our social lives. This is where competition comes in. We compete with our own friends and everyone else, on a daily basis, to keep up with trends — so we get peer pressured to do things we might not want to do or that are bad for us.

We worry that if we don’t do what others are doing, we will be left out and will be “unpopular.” We try to stay away from the drama, but that always ends up being impossible, especially at our age.

It’s small things like that, that become big things and make life seem difficult at

our age. Being peer pressured into keeping up with the “latest trends,” more problems arise in teens’ lives.

Like with cyberbullying, we get judged behind a screen by people who we may or may not know. With technology advancing, cyberbullying just seems to be becoming a bigger issue by the minute.

Although not all teenagers face this problem, research shows that at least 59% of teens’ in the U.S. are harassed online.

We start to think those comments are true and look ourselves in the opposite way we’re supposed to.

Being a teenager in the 21st century is not easy, although I still have a lot more years ahead of my teenage years. I can speak from experience that these are just some problems teenagers go through on a daily basis.

There’s a lot you can do to stress less and make life just a little easier. The best advice I can give is to just take a breather from time to time, examine life and pick

out the things you are grateful for — it helps stay positive and motivated.

And always remember — there’s a positive side and things are usually worth it in the end.

Cardinal celebrates Black History Month Mass

ardinal Joseph W. Tobin, served as the chief celebrant and homilist (he’s seen doing so at right) for this year’s Black History Month Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark.

The annual Mass was sponsored by the African American, African and Caribbean Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Newark.

This year’s Black History Month theme, “African Americans and the Vote,” celebrates the 150th anniversary of the ratification of the 15th Amendment on Feb. 3, 1870, which officially granted African-American men the right to vote by declaring that the “right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”

According to the Rev. Emeka Okwuosa, SDV, Coordinator of the Office of African American, African and Caribbean Apostolate, the Mass also honored seven Black Catholic candidates for Sainthood.

“As a young boy, I always associated sainthood with being white because all the saints I saw in pictures did not look like me,” Okwuosa said. “As a priest today, I now know there are many holy men and women who I can identify with and have names that sound like mine. For example, Saint Josephine Bakhita whose feast day we celebrated on February 8 and Saint Martin Martin de Porres who is the first Black American saint.

“There are also six AfricanAmerican men and women who are on the path to sainthood in addition to Blessed Iwene Tansi, who is the patron saint of Nigeria. As we learn about the holiness of these Black Catholics, let us remember that sainthood is not a call for the privileged few or for those of a certain station — rather it is the call for all human beings. Let this Black History Mass be a reminder that we are all called to be saints.”

Parishioner Sonja Garlin, who serves as both a member of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council and of the African American, African and Caribbean Apostolate, said, “It’s great to bring us

all together in a unified way celebrating our different cultures but knowing we are still one under God. We continue to pray that our seven Black Catholic candidates will soon become declared Saints.”

The Archdiocese of Newark also celebrated the 31st National Day of Prayer for the African American and African Family. This Catholic tradition was founded by Fr. James Goode, OFM in 1989 and takes place every year on the first Sunday of Black History Month.

Parishioner and Mass usher Betty Dephillips, who is originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, said “I am so proud to be a Catholic, especially today, as we celebrate Black History Month with Cardinal Tobin.”

For Ogoo Anukwu, who also is a Parishioner and Usher in Cathedral Basilica, it was especially moving to celebrate her family history with Blessed Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi, who is one of seven Black Catholic Candidates for Sainthood.

“Blessed Tansi is my great uncle and my father’s uncle,” she said. “Blessed Tansi was born in Nigeria in 1903 and after he became a priest he went to England where he entered the monastery.

“After he died from a brief illness in 1964, my father became the chairman of exhuming his uncle’s body from the original burial site in Lancaster, England, to be brought back to Nigeria where he was declared ‘Blesssed’ by Pope John Paul II in 1998.The body of Blessed Tansi is still in Nigeria and everyone is praying that, sooner or later, he will be declared a Saint.”

Kearny Council blunders by banning plastic bags

e understand the need for environmental responsibility. In fact, this newspaper encourages it whenever possible.

However, in the case of the ordinance that was adopted last week that essentially ends the use of plastic shopping bags, we believe the Kearny Town Council made a huge mistake, one that will have long-lasting repercussions.

A program to ban plastic bags would be better suited were it a statewide initiative. If every business were required to not use plastic bags, we could accept the consequences. However, in a town where businesses often struggle to operate on a daily basis, this ban is punitive and irresponsible.

Here’s why.

Kearny is bordered by towns that do not ban the use of plastic bags. As such, this is going to hurt Kearny businesses. Why would a consumer who is struggling to make ends meet shop in Kearny when they’d be required to purchase reusable bags?

The simple reality is they’ll have a much easier option heading to supermarkets in North Arlington, Harrison, Belleville, Lyndhurst, or elsewhere.

When it’s often difficult enough for many to live paycheck to paycheck, purchasing bags to simply bring things home is not reasonable. In the same regard, it is wholly unfair to expect people who don’t drive when shopping to haul a load of bags home that do not have handles. If this isn’t a slap in the face to the working poor of our town, not much else is.

And so while we understand the environmental need for plastic bags to be discouraged, we simply don’t understand the rush to get this ban adopted as law — and we do not understand why the council didn’t better consider the negative effects it will have on business owners and the general public.

Passing this ordinance was a monumental mistake.

And we can only hope to be wrong about what it will do to business owners. Come April 2021, we’re sure to find out.

Writer: Mea culpa on my earlier support of Jersey’s bail reform

To the Editor: I was shocked when I read the front page headline of the Feb. 5 issue of The Observer which told of two suspects hauling a truckload of marijuana being released on their own recognizance.

In October, I wrote to The Observer in favor of bail reform, but these were not the type of defendants I had in mind.

My concern was directed toward poor people arrested

I never expected major drug traffickers would benefit from an effort to address social injustice.

It seems the pendulum has swung from one extreme to the

other.

The statue of Lady Justice that stands outside many courthouses holds a scale in one hand.

The scale represents balance, and our justice system needs to strike a balance between showing compassion toward non-violent minor offenders and protecting the public from major criminals.

Water treatment protocol working, Melham says

T

ownship officials believe the downward trend in trace amounts of lead levels in the municipal tap water confirms that Newark’s new treatment protocol is working as expected.

Previous testing has showed that while lead levels have been elevated, they have consistently remained far below New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) standards that would trigger remedial action.

As per DEP’s requirements, Belleville must take a minimum of 60 water samples twice a year from single-family residences with lead-service pipes. The township, in reality, takes more samples than are required and tests quarterly, the Mayor, Michael Melham, said.

An analysis of the June 2019 samples showed the highest level of lead was 168 parts per billion (ppb). The average value was 11 ppb and the median value was 6 ppb.

When retested in December,

those lead levels dropped to a high reading of 65 ppb, an average reading of 8 ppb and a median of 4 ppb.

The federal action level standard is 15 ppb of lead, which is about equal to 15 drops of water in an Olympicsized swimming pool. If that standard is exceeded, the township must inform residents. In the township’s recent tests, while the average reading was 8 ppb and a median of 4 ppb, the 90th percentile came in at 16 ppb.

Even though it is a downward trend and shows progress, the township is still mandated to notify residents.

“The numbers indicate that the treatment is working and that it is reducing the leeching of the lead into residential service lines,” Melham said.

“We are cautiously optimistic, but we will continue to monitor the water just as we have since high levels of lead were first detected in Pequannock-based Newark drinking water last summer.”

Lyndhurst man is behind bars after he reportedly assaulted several Lyndhurst police officers at the scene of a motorvehicle incident, Det. Sgt. Vincent Auteri, the publicinformation officer of the Lyndhurst Police Department said last week.

According to Auteri: At approximately 1:58 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19, Lyndhurst Police Officer Angel Batista was on patrol in the area of Kingsland Avenue and Sixth Street when he came across a vehicle stopped in the eastbound lane of Kingsland Avenue.

As Officer Batista got closer to the vehicle, he observed a man standing in the roadway at the passenger side of the vehicle. Officer Batista stopped his patrol vehicle behind the subject vehicle at which point the man in the street, later identified as John Parise, 27, of Lyndhurst, began to yell

POLICE BEAT obscenities in the direction of Officer Batista’s marked patrol vehicle.

Before Officer Batista could exit his patrol vehicle, the subject vehicle suddenly pulled away and executed an illegal U-turn. Officer Batista was able to direct the vehicle off to the side of the road before it could pull away. Once the vehicle had stopped, Parise approached Officer Batista in belligerent fashion.

Officer Batista immediately determined Parise was highly intoxicated and radioed headquarters for assistance.

Parise remained belligerent and unruly, but Officer Batista was able to convince him to return to his nearby residence.

Shortly thereafter, Lt. Anthony Ricigliano and Officer Matt Dudek arrived on scene, which prompted Parise to return, again in See ASSAULT, Page 14

Although current law requires water companies and utilities to alert customers within 60 days if tests reveal lead contamination, legislation introduced earlier this week would require them to notify their customers and the local municipalities within 10 days.

While that is welcome news,

Melham said the township remains vigilant.

“I will continue to fight for the safety and welfare of Belleville residents,” Melham said. “I’m pleased that all signs show that the orthophosphate being deployed to coat the pipes is working. We expect to see the traces of lead continue to fall when our water is tested again in June.”

Albeit a short-term solution, Belleville recently provided free water filters to Belleville’s most vulnerable, strictly out of an abundance of caution.

The mayor is committed to a long term, permanent solution, and promised to unveil a comprehensive residential lead service line replacement program during his State of the Township Speech in May.

KPD: Chestnut St. burglary suspect nabbed

By Karen Zautyk kzautyk@theobserver.com Following a concentrated three-week investigation, Kearny police have reported the arrest of one of three men sought in connection with a mid-morning burglary of a multi-family home on the 100 block of Chestnut Street.

Stolen property was recovered, and the hunt for the accomplices continues.

Officers initially responded to the home on Jan. 21 after a 26-year-old resident reported that he had been awakened at 10 a.m. by the sound of people talking inside his roommate’s locked bedroom. “Knowing that his roommate was at work,” police said, “the complainant suspected something was amiss.”

After banging on the door, the complainant looked outside and saw three men running from the home toward the backyard. He also noticed that a ladder was leaning the roommate’s window, from which an air conditioner had been removed.

Police said the roommate, a 30-year-old woman, later confirmed that a Playstation 4 video-game system, a cellular phone and a jug full of coins had been stolen.

KPD Det. Jordenson Jean took up the investigation and identified one of the suspects as Pedro Rodrigues, 21, of Kearny. Detectives located and arrested Rodrigues near the Clay Street Bridge on Feb. 13 at approximately 10 p.m.

He was charged with burglary, theft and conspiracy and was sent to the Hudson County Jail.

Police said Jean recovered the victim’s stolen Playstation and video game at a local video game store.

The investigation into the identities of the two unapprehended suspects remains active. *** Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following: Feb. 13 At 5:22 p.m., Officer Mina Ekladious responded to Walmart, where store security reported that Jaime Rios, 28, of Newark, had removed numerous toys from their shelves, concealed some on his person and swapped price-tags on others before under-ringing them at the self-checkout. The total value was reportedly $251.75.

Rios was arrested, charged with shoplifting and possession of CDS (an oxycodone pill allegedly concealed in his sock) and was sent to the county jail.

Feb. 14 At 12:42 p.m., Officer Ryan Stickno was patrolling on Passaic Ave. when he noticed a man exiting the Ulta Beauty store and recognized him as an unapprehended suspect from a Feb. 8 shoplifting at the same place, police said.

In that incident, store personnel reported that the man, later identified as Andre T. Williams, 48, of Newark, had concealed five bottles of cologne, worth $481, on himperson and left without paying.

As Stickno was stopping Williams, KPD HQ received a simultaneous phone call from Ulta reporting that the same man had allegedly shoplifted again. This time, he was accused of pocketing a bottle of Juicy Couture EDP spray and a bottle of Dylan Blue cologne, worth a total of See KPD, Page 14

Crowning moment for Buc wrestlers Guerra, Fennell Hakim Fennell was introduced to the sport of wrestling a little more than two years ago, when Fennell was a sophomore at Belleville High School.

“I just thought it would be a good opportunity to try something different,” Fennell said. “I came in, saw all the other guys working hard and wanted to do the same thing.”

But Fennell didn’t have a lot of success as a sophomore newcomer, winning just a handful of matches.

“I lost in the first round of the districts (District 10) as a sophomore,” Fennell said. “And from that moment on, I never stopped working.”

It was after that setback that Fennell walked away from football and concentrated on wrestling.

“I saw what the others did and I said, ‘Why can’t I do that?’” Fennell said.

“What’s so hard about the sport that I can’t do?’ I knew I had to stop football if I wanted to work on wrestling.”

So Fennell started to regularly work out at a gym in Belleville owned by former Belleville wrestling champions Filiberto and Justin Colon.

“I had been to their house and saw all the trophies and medals they won,” Fennell said. “It really motivated me. It put me on the right track. It

was something I wanted to become.”

Last season, Fennell took third in the District 10 tourney and went on to lose in the first round at Region 4.

“I took a lot of losses last year that I could have won,” Fennell said. “I just had to put a lot of hard work into it.”

Last Saturday, at the District 10 tourney at Randolph, Fennell got his well-earned prize. He will forever be remembered as a Belleville district champion.

Fennell captured the gold medal in the 160-pound weight class, pinning Anthony DeMarco of Lyndhurst/North Arlington in the finals in 3:32, improving his record to 29-4 on the season.

“I worked hard for it,” Fennell said. “It’s been a long road, but this was rewarding. It feels amazing.”

Buccaneer teammate David Guerra also claimed a gold medal at 145 pounds, pinning Zayln Smith of Irvington in the title bout in 2:51.

“I got second last year at the districts,” said Guerra, whose record now stands at 35-2 for the season. “I always said that this was the year that I was going to get one. I tried not to think about it too much. After the (Essex County) counties, See VIEW, Page 11

By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com The 2019-2020 high school wrestling season was still basically in its infant stages when the Kardinals of Kearny headed to the prestigious and highly competitive Elizabeth Tournament, on the heels of their highly successful debut in their own Kearny Holiday Classic tourney.

At the tournament, talented 126-pound junior Jacob Baeza was giving his usual tough performance, when he felt something wrong in his knee.

“I really started to feel pain then,” Baeza said. “I really bent my knee the wrong way. It just twisted and it became swollen. I then woke up the next morning with big bruise on my knee.”

Baeza anticipated the worst.

“I really thought I tore something,” Baeza said. “I went to get an MRI (magnetic resonance image) of my knee and I still felt pain.”

The result? Baeza suffered

two tears in his meniscus and a tear in his medial collateral ligament (MCL).

“I went to see two doctors,” Baeza said. “One doctor told me that I needed surgery.”

That was the worst option, because if Baeza was to have surgery, he would have been forced to miss the entire season.

“Another doctor said that I could take some time off and maybe heal enough to have surgery in the offseason,” Baeza said. “They were both bad news. I was going through a tough time with it, because I didn’t want to lose my reputation.”

Baeza earned such notoriety by finishing third in the District 11 tournament as a freshman, then winning the tourney last year.

“I wanted to accomplish it again,” Baeza said. “But the doctors were saying a different thing. One said that I had to stay totally off the knee for a while, while the other one was telling me to have the surgery.”

Baeza asked one of the orthopedic doctors if he could return after a brief stint on the sidelines. Baeza tried to rationalize with the surgeon, saying that he would undergo surgery once the wrestling season came to a halt.

“But I thought my season was over,” Baeza said. “I was so upset. I wasn’t satisfied. I had more to do this year.”

Baeza was able to make enough of a recovery to return to action just two weeks ago, when the Kardinals participated in the annual Hudson County Duals, an event where they took second.

Baeza got three matches in that day, then had two more when the Kardinals won their first NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group IV sectional match in 25 years.

“I had a lot of obstacles to overcome,” Baeza said. “Both of my parents didn’t want me to wrestle, but I decided to give it See WRESTLING, Page 10

The Kardinals advanced eight wrestlers on to the Region 4 tournament this weekend in West Orange.

Brandon Vanzini (132 pounds) lost in the championship round, falling via a pin.

Devin Narvaez, who entered the tournament with an 11-16 record, miraculously advanced to the final round before falling.

Narvaez lost to Justin Herrmann of Mendham, 7-2, in the title match. Narvaez advanced to the finals despite being the No. 9 seed.

Daniel Silveira (106), Justin Pezantez (120), Alex Anorim (170) and Andrew Mauricio all placed third, so they will come back to wrestle another day at the Region 4 tournament.

All in all, it was a great day for the Kardinals, as the three reigning District 11 champs got to gain another gold medal.

For Baeza, it was redemption.

Belleville head coach Joe Pizzi was proud of his two champions.

“It’s amazing and he’s an amazing kid,” Pizzi first said of Guerra. “Last year, he faced a tough wrestler and wasn’t able to get it. But this year, he just ran right through the competition and took it handily. It was awesome to see.

Added Pizzi, “Hakim has become an amazing young man.

He’s come a long way. He has become committed to the sport.

Not every kid can do it like this.

He’s always been athletic and strong, but Hakim put in the time to become a better wrestler. He showed how much he wanted it. Another kid wouldn’t have given the same effort. But Hakim earned this. Any time he gets to go on the mat, he’s going to do it.”

Pizzi said that Fennell morphed into a wrestling body from football.

“He’s a big kid and a lean kid,” Pizzi said. “It wasn’t easy for him to handle the change at first, but you can see the difference now. Kids he couldn’t beat before, Hakim now hammers. In order to develop as a wrestler, he had to become more specific and train differently. That’s where he is now.”

“Our guys wrestled a really tough tournament,” Nutley head coach Mike DiPiano said. “Getting eight through really shows how strong this team has been all year. We finished 16-12 and nine of those losses were all decided by one weight class.”

DiPiano expects a better turnout than what the Maroon Raiders gave last year at Region 4.

“Last year, on the Wednesday of regions, we had a really bad round,” DiPiano said. “One of our team goals this year was to get back to that point and perform on a different level. We have been working towards that goal and now have the opportunity to right last year’s wrong.

We want guys wrestling on Saturday for a chance at AC (the state championships in Atlantic City).”

Dylan may have had a point with his dramatic trophy presentation, as his little brother beat the top two seeds to win the title.

“It’s always been a goal of mine to win the districts,” Damian Weaver said. “The districts were pretty tough for me. I knew my opponents for a long time, but going in, I was focused and had a good game plan. I felt perfect going in.”

JAMES R. KASHAUER James R. Kashauer of Kearny died at home on Feb. 18, 2020.

He was 53.

Funeral arrangements were with the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, Kearny. Mass was celebrated Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020 and burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Son of the late Charles and Mary (nee Smith) Kashauer, he was the brother of Joan DelGuercio (the late Joseph) and the late Joseph Kashauer. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Terri Kashauer. James worked for 15 years at Preserver Group and also worked in shipping/

“Yeah, I’ll give it to him,” Damian Weaver said.

And of course, Scot Weaver has also been a motivation to Damian.

“My dad is always been there for me and coaches me to my full potential,” Damian Weaver said. “I’ve always wanted to wrestle as far back as I can remember. It’s a great feeling knowing I have my brother and my Dad right there with me and we won this together..”

Damian also has his twin sister, Morgan, who is two minutes older than Damian and plays soccer at Lyndhurst High.

“She definitely helps,” Damian said. “She supports me and my brother.”

The elder Weaver is a little more experienced in terms of conducting interviews.

“One District time rolled around, it was my time to start peaking,” Dylan Weaver said.

“This is really a great feeling.

Definitely having my little brother there is a plus, but when he’s winning, it’s awesome. It’s not really explainable. It’s just really special to share this. I like being the big brother. I like setting the example and if I make a mistake,

James Gordon Fowlie died Feb. 12, 2020.

He was 88 and had recently celebrated his birthday on Jan. 31 in Clearwater Beach, Florida.

He was born in Philadel-

phia.

Gordon was a veteran of the US Navy, a proud patriot, and a multi-term elder of the First Presbyterian Church, Kearny.

As a Little League baseball coach, the Kearny ShopRite was his team. He always treated his team for ice cream after the games, regardless of whether they were victorious.

A Cub Scout pack leader, a volunteer Sunday school teacher, a Shriner, a past master of the North Arlington NJ Masonic Lodge, a volunteer of the traveling Masonic funeral team, a facilitator of the local Special Olympics through the Optimist Club — these are just

a few of the activities with which he served his community and made the world a better place.

With his enthusiasm for people, and his service to the community, he put smiles on millions of faces. But those smiles were also his profession. As a dental technician, he created false teeth for people in need, to allow them to smile again for the remainder of their lives.

He was the CEO of Legg Dental Lab, established in 1940 by grandpa Rex Legg; the lab remains in business today, 80 years later.

Gordon was predeceased by

his parents and his brothers, Ian and William. He is survived by his brother, Ronald, his loving wife Jean Violet Legg Fowlie, two devoted sons Paul Scott and David Alan, five grandchildren — Kristen, Alanna, Erik, Cassandra and Noel — and two great-grandchildren — Bradley and Julian.

A Celebration of Life service will take place in the spring in New Jersey, with details to be determined.

There’s only one problem with that line. Dylan Weaver is about as perfect of a young man as there is – and he’s already declared his intentions to attend Rutgers when his high school wrestling days are done.

Dylan Weaver has one thing in mind – to secure the state championship that just eluded him last year.

“It’s definitely a big goal,”

Dylan Weaver said. “It’s been that way the whole year. I’ve worked all year, both physically and mentally. This is definitely my year. I came close last year (falling in the semifinals). This year, I’m way better and I’m ready for it.”

That’s music to the coach’s ears, who also just happens to be the proud papa.

“It was a very good night,” Scot Weaver said. “We were able to go out with my sisters and their families. I was able to sit back and reflect a bit.”

There is a bit of a difference in the two boys.

“Damian is a grinder,” Scot Weaver said. “He likes to battle.

Dylan is a slick, technical wrestler. But they certainly feed off each other.”

After all, it’s all been part of the plan.

Near the beer garden and main performance stage at Mandees, the food trucks from all over the tri-state area will park.

Between Liberty and Afton streets, that’s where you’ll find vendors, games and much more.

It’ll all happen on what Fabula hopes is a fine Spring day. And it promises to be a memorable day, one that brings the entire community together — in celebration of

the closure of the Keegan Landfill.

“We want to pull everyone together as a community,” he says. “It will be a great way to mark the final closure of the landfill.”

As of now, there are several major sponsors for the event, including Kearny Point, Kearny Bank, Buy-Rite Liquors, Mid-Realty, Cummins, Shop-Rite of Kearny and Suez water. And, it’s not too late for other businesses to get involved in the day, the proceeds for which go toward all of the many things the PBA does for the community, including scholarships, school supply drives, the annual Tour de Force bike run for 9/11, and much more.

The Kearny Health Department will be charged with enforcing the new law.
