Remembering late NA man who fought at Iwo Jima

A

few weeks ago, retired Kearny Police Chief John P. Dowie called my friend and colleague Karen Zautyk at home and told her he’d found a story I wrote in 2007. It was about a late North Arlington resident, Michael V. Fiore, who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II as a member of the United States Marines.

At first, I couldn’t remember Mr. Fiore or the story — until about a week after Chief Dowie called Karen and dropped off a copy of the story that he’d saved. When the chief came in,

I was unfortunately on a phone call, so I never got a chance to thank him for finding it, so I take that time, now, to say “Thank You” chief.

The moment I read the first paragraph, it all flooded back to me. Mr. Fiore was a wonderful man. I can now recall him sitting at my side in The Observer’s old office at 531 Kearny Ave. He was animated.

He was opinionated. He hated that at the time, we were in the midst of yet another war, this time in Iraq.

He was truly one the greatest heroes I’ve ever met in my life, far greater and more important than any athlete, Hollywood star, politician or public figure of today whom I’ve met over

my career.

Sadly, I learned with a simple Google search, that Mr. Fiore died Sept. 25, 2012, at Select Specialty Hospital in Rochelle Park. He was 88 and now rests in the Holy Cross Mausoleum in North Arlington.

The story was a treasure and I say that not because I wrote it, but because it was of and about a man whose generation — the Greatest Generation as Tom Brokaw so aptly named it in his book — is now so few in number.

3 New parking regulations in effect near Harrison PATH

Harrison streets in the area of the PATH Station will be regulated by the ParkMobile pay-byapp parking system beginning Tuesday, Feb. 18, Mayor James A. Fife announced last week.

Signage has been installed to note the new regulations, Fife said.

Prior to redevelopment, payment was required to park on all streets in the area of the PATH station. Now that redevelopment has been achieved, Fife said, the town is returning to a payment system through ParkMobile.

“While the town has received some complaints, the plan has always been that residents of the new apartment buildings

park in their building’s parking garage as part of their leases,” Fife said. “To accomplish this, the town required every developer to build a minimum of one off-street parking space for each apartment.”

Remembering East Newark FD’s only line of duty death, 40 years on

By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com Forty years ago, the East Newark Fire Department had its one and only line of duty death at a fire at 400 John St., where Firefighter Ronald V. Patterson Sr., 37 at the time, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 1980.

That night, he was one of two men who lost their lives in the fire.

A tenant in the building, Norman Graham, who at the time was 67, also died in the fire.

In honor of Mr. Patterson, and the ultimate sacrifice he made, and in honor of Mr. Graham, The Observer now reprints the story that announced their deaths in the Thursday, Feb. 7, 1980, edition of The Observer.

EAST NEWARK — (THURSDAY, FEB. 7, 1980 ) — A volunteer fireman searching for a tenant on the third floor of a burning building died in a three-alarm fire along with the occupant in East Newark early Saturday morning (Feb. 2,

1980.)

Fireman Ronald V. Patterson Sr., 37, died at West Hudson Hospital. The other victim was Norman Graham, 67, who live in one room on the third floor at 400 John St. Both apparently been trapped by the intense heat and smoke.

Police Officers John Baggett and Sam Latini attempted to enter the building to search for the trapped men, but were driven off by flames and smoke.

Several other firemen suffered minor injuries, but were treated at the scene.

Patterson was an eight-month member of the borough’s fire department. Fire Chief John E. O’Kane described him as “one of the most dedicated workers we have on this force.”

The death of Patterson was the first fireman fatality in the borough’s volunteer fire department since its organization in 1895.

O’Kane said Patterson was wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus, indicating he was searching for victims

scene, flames and some were pouring from the first-floor (of the) building.

Two pieces of apparatus from Kearny and another from Harrison also were at the scene.

Two families in the three-story structure were safely evacuated and found refuge with relatives and friends.

According to police, the first and second floors were owned by PJ Tavern on the ground floor. Smoke and flames

caused extensive damage. Police said the building has been vacated.

Freezing temperatures coated firemen with ice and they fought the blaze, remaining on duty until 11 a.m.

The cold also hampered the water supply.

(The) cause of the fire is under investigation by the Arson Squad of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, along with East Newark fore Inspector Albert Brady and the borough police.

We know the fire spread quickly,” O’Kane said. “It took us a particularly long time to reach the pair because of

the difficulty presented by the intense hear. The third floor went up swiftly, and then the roof collapsed.”

Commenting on the death, O’Kane said: “He attended every meeting, every course and drill we called and did everything he was asked to do by his officers. He didn’t get paid for the work he did, but that did not affect his performance.”

Borough firemen held special memorial services for their dead comrade at the Mulligan Funeral Home on Cleveland Avenue in Harrison.

Patterson; an 8-year-old son Ronald V. Patterson Jr.; a brother Daniel Patrick and a sister Mrs. Catherine Martin.

The funeral was Feb. 6, 1980, at 8:30 a.m., with a Mass at St. Anthony’s Church in East Newark at 9:30 a.m.

Fire officials believe that Graham was asleep when the fire broke out and apparently was overcome while in bed. His body was taken to the Hudson County morgue, but later was identified by brothers living in Kearny and East Newark. Funeral arrangements had not been completed by Tuesday, Feb. 5, 1980.

Assembly, Murphy must reject bill to remove statue of Gen. Kearny

On St. Valentine’s Day, the Harrison Senior Center had the pleasure of sharing in the celebration of the marriage of Ezekiel H. Wan, a Vietnam veteran, and his bride Yuk Chun Poon (Angela). Mayor James A. Fife officiated the ceremony and it was witnessed by Lt. Dean McGee, of the Harrison Police Department and the Rev. Sing Kin So, along with all at the Harrison Senior Center. We wish the new married couple many years of happiness!

here’s a bill heading to the state Assembly, and if it passes, it would cross the desk of Gov. Phil Murphy. And, if he signs it, it’ll lead to a statue of Gen. Philip Kearny being unnecessarily removed from the U.S. Capitol.

The brainchild of the bill, which already passed in the state Senate, are three Democrats, none of whom live anywhere near our town. (Two are from South Jersey, the other, Central Jersey.)

Their cause — erect a statue of Alice Paul in the Capitol and remove Kearny’s.

Their idea — half good, half horrendous.

Because you see, Paul does, indeed, deserve to be remembered for the incredible work she did during her lifetime on behalf of women everywhere. There is no doubt she deserves homage.

A statue of her would make a fine addition to the Statehouse in Trenton, not in Gen. Kearny’s stead in D.C., as Council President Carol Jean Doyle noted.

There is a trend in this country to remove statues of Confederate “heroes.” We certainly get that — and see no issue removing remembrances of people who were slave owners and whose history denotes a time in our nation’s history that is best ignored.

But Gen. Kearny was a hero. He’s our hero. He’s our namesake. He lost an arm fighting for this county.

His sacrifice was ultimate, having given his life in battle during the Civil War, fighting for the north so that slaves might be free.

His life experiences are well worth remembering 150+ years later.

So, too, are the works of Alice Paul. It’s just that it cannot be at the expense of our hero.

We urge the state Assembly to reject this measure.

We urge Murphy to veto the bill if it gets to his desk (and it likely will — and he likely won’t.)

For once, could someone, anyone in Trenton show Kearny — the man and the town — just one iota of respect?

Are we really asking for all that much?

Come on, governor ... after the Keegan Landfill fiasco, you owe us this much. Give us all one less reason not to vote for you in 2021.

Editorial re: bail reform was spot on To the Editor: I totally agree with your editorial on the release of two criminals because of the ridiculous bail reform law! (Feb. 12).

The state Legislature should either amend or change this pro-crime law.

I agree that the poor person with no income and charged

LETTER TO THE EDITOR with a crime should receive some consideration from the courts, but these men (in the pot bust) are professional criminals and ply their trade in drugs.

They are not from our area, and

this law should allow for exceptions in these cases. A!so, I’m are these guys had enough money to cover bail and court fees.

The drug trade is lucrative and most damaging to our young people. Let’s allow discretion to judges and not tie their hands.

Michael Fiore did was just about any patriotic man was doing in the early 1940s — answering his country’s call to serve in the military. It was 1942, when he was just 18 years old, that he decided he’d go into the Marines, because he wanted to be up front when he was called to battle.

So it was later that year that the longtime North Arlington resident, who grew up in Newark, headed out to Parris Island, S.C., for basic training with the Marines. He’d later move on to artillery training at Quantico in Virginia. He was there for four months, and he later received more training out in California.

And then, it was time for him to head out to sea — to a future of many unknowns.

“They never told us where we were going,” Fiore says.

“We would wind up going to Maui, where we had even more training.”

During his time in Maui, Fiore caught a little-known disease called Dengue fever. Its effects were similar to Malaria. For three months, he was cooped up in a hospital bed, wondering if he’d ever recover.

He did.

And when he did, it was off to the most challenging period of his life.

Fiore would become part of the Battle of lwo Jima in February and March 1945.

“We spent a month at sea, waiting for our orders,” Fiore says.

“When we were in Tokyo, they’d tell us we should go home, because our wives and girlfriends were waiting for us.”

Yet going home just wasn’t an option. Instead, the men of his infantry waited and waited — and finally got their orders to head out to the tiny Japanese Island, site to some of the most intense fighting of all of World War II. “They had been fighting already before we first arrived,” Fiore says. “And when we sailed into shore, there were dead Japanese people all along the beach. At first, we didn’t know if they were Japanese, because many of their faces had been scarred — they didn’t even look human anymore. We didn’t know if they were military or civilians. “‘But we found out later, for sure, they were Japanese, based on the clothes they were wearing. It was certainly a frightening thing to stumble upon on arrival.”

As time moved on, Fiore, a machine gunner, says the fighting slowly died down. It was his Marines who were doing most of the fighting by land.

For 40 days, he and his comrades were tied down, lying low and maneuvering equipment along the beach. They had to be extra careful since for the most part, Iwo Jima was barren land.

“There was nothing more than coral rock,” Fiore recalls. “‘No trees. Nothing.”

Because of the bare nature of the land, Fiore says it was rather difficult finding the Japanese Military, many of whom were hiding in underground pits.

“But when we found them, we were ordered to get them out by throwing flame throwers into their hiding spots,” Fiore says.

“Extremely difficult, it was. And we wound up killing 25- to 30,000 of them.”

Fiore recalls that 7,000 or so American men died at Iwo Jima.

But that was entirely too many deaths. Many of his friends who he sailed into Iwo Jima with weren’t with him when they left.

For Fiore, it’s something he thinks about quite a bit — in fact, he says not a day goes by that he doesn’t think of his experiences and of the friends he lost at Iwo Jima. “‘When I close my eyes, I can still see everything like it was yesterday,” he says. “It’s impossible not to think about being there each and every day. I suppose I was a fortunate one to have made it out. God apparently had other plans for me. But the difference between then and now is that we know who our enemy was then — unlike now.”

Rest in peace, ole chap. Hope you’re up there having a blast with all those you lost in 1945.

Mayor Alberto G. Santos, meanwhile, who was first to alert The Observer about this bill on Feb. 10, Senate Bill No. 1369, says he was “stunned” by the senate’s somewhat covert move. “(There was) no notice,” Santos said. “(It came) just out of the blue … The Legislature is pitting an important woman’s rights advocate against a war hero who led the New Jersey Brigade for the Union in the Civil War and was killed in battle. So is the implicit judgment that what Ms. Paul represents is more important to New Jersey history than Kearny? Is this what happens when you apply relativism to history? If so, then the state Legislature should consider a regular rotation of statues.”

Santos noted Gov. Phil Murphy, who throughout the Keegan Landfill debacle last year refused to meet face-toface or to return the mayor’s phone calls, would be required to enact the bill by signing it should it pass in the Assembly.

The lower body of the state Legislature is not expected to have the bill on its calendar until sometime in March, however.

When asked if he believed the governor would sign the bill — which would be yet another slap in the face to the residents of Kearny by a governor who handily won Kearny when he was first elected in 2017 — Santos said: “Yes, there’s that possibility.”

Kearny expert who is in the midst of writing his second book on the general, encourages citizens of Kearny to call or write to Assembly Members Angelica M. Gen. Kearny lost one of his arms while fighting in the Mexican-American War. Styple noted that he was so much against slavery in America that years after the MexicanAmerican War, he decided to re-enlist to fight Confederate forces in the Civil War. “He felt slavery was a stain on the American Flag,” Styple noted.

In 2000, the U.S. Congress changed the law as to how the statues in the Capitol are handled. Each state has two. The law change put the decision in the hands of each state’s legislature. To make the change, both bodies of a state’s legislature must first pass a bill. That state’s governor then must sign the bill. Then, the bill is sent to the Library of Congress, which coordinates the statues.

If the change is ultimately made, the statue of Gen. Kearny would not be destroyed. Instead, it would be placed in another location — perhaps in Trenton, perhaps in Kearny — even though a replica of said statue already stands in front of the Main Post Office on Midland Avenue.

A week to remember for Kearny wrestling The week didn’t end for the Kearny High School wrestling team with any championships. There were no trophy celebrations, no medals to be won.

But the Kardinals certainly earned their fare share of respect over the past week, that’s for sure.

First, the Kards advanced all the way to the finals of the annual Hudson County Duals for a second straight year, falling to perennial power St. Peter’s Prep.

The Kards defeated host Union City, then Bayonne to advance to the finals.

“Our goal was to face Prep in the finals,” Kearny head wrestling coach Tony Carratura, Jr. said. “That’s where we wanted to be.”

Then, the Kardinals not only qualified for the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group IV tournament for a second straight year, but the Kards actually won a round in the tourney, defeating Wayne Valley, 39-33, to advance to the sectional semifinals, where they fell to Fair Lawn by eight points.

It marked the first time that Kearny won a state sectional playoff match since 1995. That’s 25 years, a full quarter century, without a state playoff victory.

“It felt like it was exactly that long,” Carratura said.

There was a time this season where a state playoff victory would have been nothing more than a pipe dream, especially with the tough schedule the Kardi-

nals faced.

“We had wrestled all the tough teams,” Carratura said. “It was hard to figure out the power points. We had some losses in the early part of the season.”

The Kards lost to state powers like Manalapan, Jefferson, Emerson-Park Ridge, Montville and Whippany Park. In fact, the Kards lost four in a row at one point to drop to 3-5 on the season.

Top wrestler Jacob Baeza was on the sidelines, nursing a knee injury. It was unknown at the time whether Baeza was going to face season-ending surgery. Baeza was a returning District 11 champion who went all the way to the state tournament last season in Atlantic City.

The Kardinals managed to make a bit of a comeback in the middle of the season and the power points needed to qualify for the state sectionals began to accumulate.

“We got rewarded for wrestling the tough teams,” Carratura said. “Our depth got stronger. A couple of guys we plugged into the lineup started to perform.: Alexander Amorim was one of those wrestlers. The senior Amorim just joined the team this season, but he took over the role at 170 pounds.

Kearny girls’ bowlers cap season of dominance again Four straight undefeated county championship seasons for Kardinals

he results are absolutely staggering, with numbers that are downright astound-

ing.

The Kearny High School girls’ bowling team recently completed a season where they once again went undefeated in play inside the Hudson County Interscholastic Athletic League, winning all 84 of their league matches, including the HCIAL tournament last week.

Ready for this? The Kards not only went undefeated in Hudson County play this season, but did so for the past four seasons.

That’s right, the Kardinals have posted a record of 336-0 over the last four years. And that’s no misprint. That’s 336 in the win column and not a single setback on the loss side.

“We’ve had a good run, to say the least,” veteran Kearny head coach Al Correnti said.

Not only have the Kardinals thoroughly dominated the local competition, but they also held their own on the state side as well. Kearny finished second in the NJSIAA North Jersey Group III and finished third overall to Brick Memorial and Toms River North, two longestablished bowling power houses in New Jersey.

Correnti believes there is a strong formula to his team’s success.

“I think it’s because a lot of the girls have experience before they come to high school,” Correnti said. “They come to me from bowling families, with experience bowling with their grandparents and parents.”

Most of the Kearny bowlers have been experienced tournament bowlers since they were

in middle school.

“Plus, I think a lot of them put in the time and effort it takes to be successful,” Correnti said. “They work on their craft, even on their own time. They definitely put in the hard work and the effort.”

The Kards head to New North Arlington Bowl on Schuyler Avenue in North Arlington as often as possible to get a few frames in.

“They get discounted rates there,” Correnti said. “It makes it easier for them to bowl often.”

It also helps that some of the Kardinals are related and head to New North Arlington Bowl together.

Incredibly, Montanino’s cousin, Caitlyn Battistus, is her main competition, both on the team and in the county.

Battistus had a 178 average, which was second only to Montanino in Hudson County. The cousins faced each other in the county tournament finale, won by Montanino 189-179.

“It’s nice and a lot of fun to have a nice family competition with my cousin Caitlyn,” Montanino said. “Throughout the season, we push each other. We also keep it pretty friendly. Her mother and my father bowled together all their lives, so it’s a family thing.”

While Montanino was a member of the Kearny varsity, they never lost a single game.

“It’s amazing to be on a team that went 336-0,” Montanino said. “To be on the team for four straight years and never lose is really something special. We have shown what we’re made of for four years and I’m really proud.”

Correnti praised Battistus’ performance.

“He has all the tools to be a good one,” Correnti said. “Her father (Randy) is a phenomenal bowler, so she has the pedigree and knowledge of the sport.”

The third member of the team

is sophomore Hannah Paszkiewicz, the daughter of the longtime Kearny crew coach Dave.

The younger Paszkiewicz had a 176 average, which was third best in the entire county.

“She made good strides this year,” Correnti said of Paszkiewicz. “From freshman to sophomore year, she improved tremendously.”

Sophomore Anna Powell had a 153 average and that was good for fourth in the county, so the Kards had the top four finishers. No wonder why they went 84-0 this year and 336-0 for the four years.

Senior Brianna Baros and freshman Atianna Gutierrez round out the varsity starters.

“Everything turned out really well,” Correnti said. “Finishing among the top teams in North Jersey was noteworthy.”

Montanino plans to attend the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., where she plans on studying to become a pastry chef.

“There’s no feeling like this, to accomplish what we did over the last four years,” Montanino said. “I’m proved that I could be the best bowler I could be. Coach Correnti puts in a lot of time and teaches us so well. It’s all because of him.”

RALPH E. DEMICHELE Ralph E. DeMichele, 89, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2020 surrounded by family.

Born in West New York, he had lived in Kearny since 1969.

He was a graduate of Memorial High School in West New York where he was a member of the football and baseball teams.

He went on to attend Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania on a football scholarship and graduated in 1954.

Ralph became a certified-public accountant in 1978. He was a member of the N.J. Society of CPAs and practiced in Kearny for over 40 years. He worked for the North Bergen Board of Education as a high school math teacher from 1961 to 1992. He also coached the North Bergen Bruins’ varsity football team to multiple Hudson County Championships in the 1970s and their boys’ varsity tennis Team to one in 1992. He was an avid tennis player and a member of the Arlington Player’s Club in Kearny.

Ralph was the beloved husband of Mary B. DeMichele (nee Ronan); the devoted father of Mary DeMichele and her husband Chris Perkins, Ralph DeMichele and his wife Louise and Jayne Phillips and her husband James; the cherished grandfather of James, Joseph, Jack, Cole, Grace and Megyn; the loving brother of Elena Chopek and her husband Steve, Patrick DeMichele and his wife Jean , and the late Achilles and Rose DeMichele; and the dear brother-in-law of Thomas Ronan.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb 14 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, North Arlington.

Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Zoe Kathleen Battiste died Feb. 9, 2020 at home in Newark.

She was 101.

Zoe had been a stenographer for The N.Y. State Attorney General’s office.

Entombment will be in the Our Lady of Heaven Cemetery in North Lauderdale, Florida.

LOUIS J. CANTAFIO

Louis J. Cantafio died Feb. 9, 2020, after an extended hospital stay.

He was 77.

Born in New York City, Lou grew up on the streets of Chelsea before moving to Lake Hopatcong to raise his family and later moved to Kearny in 1994.

Lou was very proud of those he is survived by — his sons Louis J. Cantafio Jr. and Michael A. Cantafio, daughters-inlaw Kathy and Noris and especially of his grandson Michael A. Cantafio. He was extremely happy to be a grandfather and loved every minute he spent

with his grandson.

Lou was a proud retiree and had earned his living and raised his family as a union truck driver. Lou loved the hustle and never let a good deal go by. Besides making money, one of his very favorite things to do was sit in his driveway and drink beer with his friends and neighbors.

In his decline, Lou challenged every soul he came in contact with and never yielded an inch.

He lived life in much the same way. When the end came, he returned to his home and invited his most respected friends to visit. He looked them in the eye and shook their hands. Later, he rested in peace with his two boys at his side before quietly passing away. Lou may possibly have been the toughest man ever to live.

Lou specified no services.

Private cremation arrangements are with the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, Kearny.

Lou’s sons would love it if his friends would stop by Lou’s driveway for one last beer.

Charles T. Kashauer died Jan. 1, 2020, in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.

He was 67.

KPD: You can run, but you can’t escape

By Karen Zautyk kzautyk@theobserver.com On Feb. 6, after two months on the lam, a 28-year-old Bayonne man was nabbed in that city by Bayonne police, who then delivered him to KPD headquarters, authorities reported. The arrestee, Gabriel Rosado, was wanted for allegedly leading Kearny cops on a high-speed chase Dec. 7.

On that date, police said, at Routes 1&9 and Hackensack Ave. in South Kearny, KPD Officers Mathew Lopez and Ryan Stickno had pulled over Rosado for traffic infractions. When they alighted to approach the Acura TL he was driving, he allegedly took off, leading them on the vehicular pursuit into Jersey City.

For safety reasons, the officers terminated the pursuit near Danforth Ave. and Route 440. But, police said, “having identified Rosado from his driver’s license photo and prior traffic tickets,” they applied for a warrant for his arrest.

On Feb. 6, Rosado was booked on the warrant charging eluding and was also issued traffic summonses for being an unlicensed driver, driving with suspended license, improper passing, reckless driving and disregard of traffic signal. He was later transferred to the Hudson County Jail. *** Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following: Feb. 7 At 11:23 a.m., police were dispatched to Harrison and Bergen Aves. on a report of an accident, with the occupants of one vehicle fleeing on foot toward Walmart.

Officers Esteban Gonzalez, John Donovan and Taylor Latka arrived to find that a Honda Accord and a Chevy Malibu had sustained heavy damage in the crash.

Police said the Honda was unattended, had marijuana residue and cigar packages in the passenger compartment — and was reported stolen out of Elizabeth on Feb. 6.

A witness followed the six fleeing occupants of the Honda into Walmart and pointed five of them out to Sgt. Kevin Canaley, but the sixth had made a clean get-away, police said.

Officers took into custody two 16-yearold Newark girls, a 14-year-old Newark girl, a 14-year-old Irvington boy and a 15-yearold Newark boy. They were charged with receiving stolen property, conspiracy and possession of pot and paraphernalia.

Police said the 14-year-old girl was identified as the driver of the stolen vehicle and was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury and was given a slew of traffic tickets.

The teens, uninjured, were later released to their guardians.

The driver of the Chevy Malibu, a 57-year-old Newark man, was taken to

University Hospital in Newark with chest, shoulder, and back injuries and was later discharged. *** At 12:35 p.m., Officer Jack Grimm and Sgt. Adriano Marques were summoned to Kearny High School, where a security guard reported that she had seen a 16-year-old student drop a partiallysmoked marijuana cigar from his pants pocket while he was walking. The boy was taken into custody for possession of pot but was later released to a guardian.

Feb. 9 At 1:59 p.m., Officer Mina Ekladious was dispatched to ShopRite for what turned out to be a really cheesy call: Store security reported that Robert Sanchez, 57, of Newark, had hidden $65.88 worth of Polly-O mozzarella — 12 packages — in his jacket and tried to make off with the “mutz.” Police said Sanchez was already wanted by Kearny Municipal Court on two arrest warrants, each carrying $250 bail, for shoplifting and theft of services. He got another shoplifting charge in the current matter and was sent to the county jail.

Feb. 11 At 1:02 a.m., Officers Nicole Williams and Ruben Rivera responded to Chestnut St. near Boyd St. on a report of a man yelling outside a home.

A neighbor met the officers and told them that the man was in the backyard and had been banging on windows and doors for about half an hour. Police said Ernesto J. Rosabal, 52, then walked out from the yard “and told officers that he lived there but it seemed someone had changed the locks.”

While talking to the cops, police said, Rosabal refused to stop putting his hands in his pockets, “which were overstuffed with suspicious bulges.” A frisk reportedly revealed a flashlight and a large metal rod, which was identified as drug paraphernalia. As the rod was being removed, police said, a wax fold of heroin, stamped “Jackpot,” also fell out.

As Rosabal was being placed under arrest, he allegedly removed a zippered pouch from his waistband and threw it at the house’s door, breaking its glass.

He was subdued, and a further search reportedly revealed six more folds of heroin, two rocks of crack cocaine, four cut straws, four metal rods, one cylindrical container with white residue, and a length of copper wire.

He was charged with possession of heroin, crack and drug paraphernalia and was sent to the county jail.

Police said the owner of the property knew Rosabal and declined to press charges for the broken door.
