Mayor says cars will be able to travel on roadway Jan. 31

T

hat collective sigh of relief you just heard may just be thanks to some of the most welcome news for drivers.

The Ridge Road Bridge over Rt. 3 at Rutherford Avenue, that connects Lyndhurst to Rutherford, will finally reopen to vehicular traffic on Jan. 31, Mayor Robert Giangeruso said last week.

Gone for good will be the

They could also be seen digging around the intersection preparing to plant shrubbery.

The span has been closed since June 2018, NJDOT said.

Arlington Juniorettes making huge difference in West Hudson Group of teenage girls have long history under the Junior Woman’s Club of Arlington

ast week, we brought you the story about how the Arlington Juniorettes were spearheading a project to collect feminine products for young women who are unable to afford them and who are thus often forced to miss many days of school during

the year.

Their work is tremendous — but we thought, how much does the public know about what the Juniorettes do during the course of the year? So we decide to highlight what they do, thanks to their fearless leader Brandi-Leigh Miller. And it’s our hope that perhaps there are more civic- and volunteer-minded girls out there who would consider joining the club.

Miller gave us an education about what the Juniorettes are all about.

since then,” Miller said. “In late 2016, a particularly active group of student volunteers, all daughters of members, approached our club leadership with the idea of starting an affiliate club to encourage their peers to volunteer outside of their schools, sports, scouting, etc. With this idea in mind, in 2017 the Junior Woman’s Club of Arlington voted to sponsor this new service organization for young women ages 12 to 18, and the Arlington Juniorettes and were officially rechartered by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.”

In that timeframe, Miller has been very active with the girls.

“All GFWC affiliated clubs around the world do work relevant to their own community needs through volunteer service in the arts, education, conservation, international outreach, public issues, home life and so much more,” Miller said. “We all know that many hands make light work, no matter the size of the hands doing the work.”

to serve as adviser and got the club organized and on track planning projects and programs.

“Active recruitment began and Juniorettes held a “Read Across America” event which provided free books to take home and a morning of story time and related crafts, a Zumba

class, participation in the town and Passaic River river cleanups, two school supply drives, and a ‘S’mac Down’ macaroni and cheese contest for kids among other projects,” Miller said.

“Since then, Juniorettes continue to help with JWCA service projects like the turkey drive, toy drive, chili cook-

Miller says their schedule for this year includes a demonstration by a seeing-eye dog in training and her sponsor family, workshops on leadership and financial literacy, an LGBTQ Anti-Bullying program from Garden State Equality, basic car maintenance, as well as programs focused on veterans, the elderly, conservation, autism awareness and the arts.

Pretty impressive, innit?

Meanwhile, Juniorettes are residents of Kearny, Harrison, East Newark, North Arlington and the surrounding communities and they attend public, charter, private, parochial and technology schools. Some of the girls are members of other school clubs and service organizations with a wide variety of focus, but they all come together on the issue of the importance of service in their own community where they see the need face to face and can meet it.

to provide an opportunity for every girl to have a leadership opportunity that is appropriate and comfortable for her own individual needs.

That’s because the NJSEA last week announced a new collaboration with REED Next in which the authority and its Meadowlands Environment Center will help fill a significant societal need by providing vocational opportunities for adults with autism.

The Franklin Lakes-based non-profit organization began occupying a satellite office for its REED Next Adult Day Program on the NJSEA campus in Lyndhurst in mid-December.

The year-round program, for individuals with autism 21 and older, focuses on pre-vocational and vocational training, volunteer and paid employment opportunities, community integration and assistance with daily-life skills.

“The NJSEA is very pleased to partner with REED Next and to do its part in giving adults with autism the chance to live more independent, productive and fulfilling lives through this vital program,” Vincent Prieto, president and CEO of the NJSEA said. “REED is a tremendous organization that makes a great difference in so many lives and we are proud to work with them.”

REED Next participants will work in a variety of jobs throughout the NJSEA and Meadowlands Environment Center campus.

Adults with autism are in crisis; over the next decade, more than 500,000 individuals will age out of programs, leaving them with little to no guidance or resources at a pivotal time in their lives.

“Our mission is to ensure that every individual with autism has access to the best programs needed to lead meaningful and fulfilled lives,” Jill Nadison, the executive director of the REED Foundation for Autism said. “The REED Next Day Program is built upon our years

of expertise and the support of our community partners, who share our desire to address this very real problem facing adults with autism.”

In addition to its new partnership with the NJSEA, REED Next has an established relationship with Meadowlands Environment Center’s education programs offered through a partnership between the Authority and Ramapo College.

In 2018, the Meadowlands Environment Center obtained a Mobile Food Lab through a grant obtained from REED Next and other partners. The educational tool is housed in a converted school bus and includes an indoor growing system, a science lab with digital microscopes, a teaching kitchen and an art station.

The 50-foot bus travels to school districts throughout the region and is designed to foster an interactive learning environment that engages students’ senses and curiosity around food science and encourages healthy eating habits. The Mobile Food Lab is an employment opportunity for REED Next participants.

“We are thrilled to use the Mobile Food Lab as a connection to our science education program,” said Angela Cristini, director of the Meadowlands Environment Center. “It is a prime example of how we strive to provide students with comprehensive environmental education experiences that now include food. We are united in a mission to support learning, innovation and unique employment opportunities for adults with autism.”

5 Priest with ties to Kearny & Lyndhurst placed on leave

Roman Catholic priest who once served at the parishes of St. Stephen’s, Kearny, and Sacred Heart, Lyndhurst, and who oversaw the formation of the now-defunct Mater Dei Academy when St. Stephen’s School and Holy Cross School, Harrison, merged to become one at the St. Stephen’s School campus, has been placed on administrative leave in his role as the chaplain at Oratory Preparatory School in Summit following allegations levied against him through the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, according to reports.

The Rev. Salvatore DiStefano, who has a wealth of experience in education both with the Archdiocese of Newark and in the secular world, has been placed on leave, but, according to Maria Margiotta, the spokeswoman for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark, “The archdiocese also stresses that Fr. DiStefano’s leave should not be interpreted as punishment and he continues to have the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise. At the conclusion of a review and external investigation by civil authorities, a determination will be made regarding Fr. DiStefano’s status.”

Margiotta did not say what the allegations are — she did use the word “complaints,” as in more than one complaint — but did say they “were issued in the past several days.” It should also be clear there is no evidence that any of the allegations were to have happened in Kearny or

According to DiStefano’s biography on Oratory Prep’s website — www.oratoryprep. org — he also served as guidance counselor at Sacred Heart School, Lyndhurst, and at St. Stephen’s School, Kearny, prior to its becoming Mater Dei Academy.

He is also a former member of the New York City Community School Board, where he served as chairman of the School Safety and Security Committee — and the New York City Department of Probation’s Task Force for Sexual Assault and Sexual Abuse Prevention. He had been a sworn officer for the New York City Department of Probation prior to entering the priesthood.

Oratory Prep is a day school for boys in grades 7 to 12.

Annual tuition there is $24,650.

The actor Danny DeVito and former New Jersey Gov. Richard Codey are both alums of the school.

Margiotta issued a complete statement in response to DiStefano’s leave: “The Archdiocese of Newark is cooperating with the Union County Prosecutor’s Office with respect to complaints issued in the past several days regarding Rev. Salvatore DiStefano, an archdiocesan priest who serves as Chaplain at Oratory Catholic Preparatory School in Summit.

Fr. DiStefano has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation,” she wrote.

Please just put the phone down when you’re at the wheel

T

his week, The Observer brought you a story (online) about a young girl who was hit by a car. We’re told it was sun glare that contributed to the incident — and heaven knows, wintertime sun glare can be debilitating, especially when there’s snow on the ground.

But this incident was more than just about a young child who was very fortunate not to lose her life. It served as another reminder about the way people drive around here — and the risk everyone takes every single time they get behind the wheel of a car.

Quite frankly, it’s a situation that is out of control.

For whatever the reason, people seem to be incapable of putting that phone down even for short rides. Whether it’s because of a phone call or, worse, texting, everywhere you look, people behind the wheel seem to be more concerned with their Smartphones than they are, oh, paying attention to the road!

We’re fed up with seeing distracted drivers on the road.

And you should be, too.

The next time you’re out and about, have a look for yourself if you haven’t. Take note of the number of people who are actually driving and paying attention to the road.

Then take note of the number of drivers who are either talking on the phone — you should be able to hear them since so many calls are projected loudly through car speakers — and who are looking down, around — anywhere but the road.

We’d be shocked if the majority of people you see driving are doing so without being distracted. Let this serve as notice that you shouldn’t do the very same.

And also let it serve as notice that that poor child, injured because of sun glare, could be your child one day — and perhaps it will be because of a distracted driver who was too focused on what to pick up for dinner or what time soccer practice is instead of being concerned for the safety of the drivers and pedestrians around them.

Enough is enough already.

Please, folks, we plead with you — don’t drive in a distracted manner ever again. Stop doing it now, before it’s simply too late. Put the phone down!

As a healthcare professional (specifically working with adolescents in regard to developmental and behavioral issues) I found your “Man questioned” article on Jan. 15 to be perplex-

ing and careless.

Devoting a half page and showing the “person of interest” when you admit at the very end that no crime was committed can do more harm than good for the troubled man.

I don’t doubt for a second the sincerity of your co-worker’s legitimate fear, but don’t see how stigmatizing the man — and his family members — can benefit anyone.

AMC movie theatres throughout the state provide sensory-friendly showings of current movies. Raritan Valley

Community College offers “judgment-free programs” at its planetarium, while the annual Rockin’ for Autism music festival in Fanwood has a “chill zone” for kids who need a low-stimulation environment.

It is my hope that other businesses will be inspired by those who embrace full inclusion.

Children and young adults with developmental disabilities have so much to offer, and we must do all we can to ensure they have full access to entertainment, art, culture and social interaction, so they can reach their fullest potential.

Many might not realize New Jersey is home to various businesses and entertainment venues that accommodate children and young adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. These individuals often have sensitivity to bright lights and loud, sudden sounds.

As a professional who works with individuals with special needs, and a member of the New Jersey Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NJSHA), I understand how critical it is for children and young adults to have a full range of experiences.

Woman’s club of Arlington marks 125th anniversary

Organization has been of service to community since early in 1894

I

f you’ve lived in Kearny for a while and/or if you’re a parishioner at St. Stephen’s Church, you no doubt recognize Patricia Sherwen’s name. She’s been the youth minister at St. Stephen’s for a long time and she’s been a member of the Woman’s Club of Arlington even longer.

And, it was Sherwen who oversaw the 125th anniversary of the WCA as the organization’s president.

Knowing how active the WCA is and because of the milestone anniversary — we thought this would be as good a time as any to highlight its work and mission. And so we recently spoke with Sherwen, in her first full term as president (she previously served as co-president), to find out about the club.

Sherwen says she joined the club some time ago, shortly after graduating college, after a neighbor had encouraged her to come on board. She says it was the service component to the club that most attracted her to the organization.

The club itself was officially formed March 21, 1894. In December that year, it became a charter member of the New Jersey Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Back then, the club did a lot to promote literacy and women-specific issues. In fact, the original name was the Arlington Woman’s Literacy Club. As such, it sponsored the first-ever library in

Kearny, which was originally housed in the Freeman Building on Midland Avenue at Devon Street. Of course, it was also responsible for helping to secure funding for the Main Library on Kearny Avenue, through the Carnegie Foundation, in 1907.

And, also back in the early 1900s, the club was doing then what it still does now.

Sherwen says the women were writing letters to the governor of New Jersey circa 1905 about pollution in the Passaic River. Members were still writing to the governor of New Jersey in 2019, except it was all about a landfill this time.

“Isn’t that great?” Sherwen said.

Sherwen pointed to how the membership provides women the opportunity to improve their community through volunteer service.

“The Arlington Club serves Kearny and surrounding areas working on our own projects, often joining with other local service organizations to help the community.”

One of the biggest project the club has undertaken involves foster children.

“As a member of the New Jersey Federation, we join with other NJ clubs on state projects such as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA),” Sherwen said.

Different locations vary on their training process, but all advocates are properly trained to assess a familial situation, a child’s opinion and adequately represent children in court.

Typical training consists of 30

hours of pre-service training and 12 hours per year of continuing training.”

The club also hosts a “baby shower” each year where members donate items for children to less fortunate mothers through the Salvation Army.

But it’s not just local projects in which the WCA takes part.

“As a member of the General Federation, we join with women’s club throughout the country in supporting national projects

such as the passing of the Pure Food and Drug Act and Women’s right to vote,” she said.

KPD: Graffiti acronym mystery solved!

By Karen Zautyk kzautyk@theobserver.com Last week’s Kearny police blotter included a report of a Jan. 3 graffiti incident in which the following message was spray-painted on a Chestnut Street home: “F--- you NLMB.” We were mystified — about the second half. Now, we have been educated.

According to the KPD, the

arrested suspects — 20-yearold twin brothers who live in the defaced building — eventually admitted “that NLMB meant ‘Never Leave My Brothers.’ It’s apparently a common rap term.”

It also turns out the “artists” had put a period after “F-- you.” So there were two sentences. The punctuation clarifies things. This was not,

POLICE BEAT as some readers had thought, a possible message to or from some Midwest street-gang.

(But maybe to the world in general?)

to help us with the translation. *** Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following: Jan. 16 At 4:39 p.m., Officers Mina Ekladious and Nick Funk and Sgt. Kevin Canaley were dispatched to Kmart on a report of two men using fraudulent credit cards.

The officers arrived to find Dominique D. Heard, 25, and Tyreese C. Boomer, 30, both of Brooklyn, exiting the store — followed by Kmart security, who charged that those two (and other people who had already left the premises) used fraudulent cards to try to purchase $2,332.89 of clothing, baby products and tool sets.

When a cashier, believing something was amiss, asked for identification, the group allegedly threatened the employee and then left, with the unpaid-for merchandise.

Ignoring officers’ commands to stop walking, Heard and Boomer allegedly broke into a full run with the cops in pursuit. Police said Heard crossed Passaic Avenue, but fell down in the Burger King drive-thru, where Ekladious and Lt. Charles Smith “wrangled him into custody.”

Police said Funk chased Boomer to the LA Fitness parking lot and then to the BJ’s Wholesale Club lot, where he was apprehended.

(Meanwhile, the conspirators reportedly fled — with the merchandise — in a Kia that had been parked at Kmart.)

Heard and Boomer were charged with shoplifting, conspiracy, obstructing the administration of law and resisting arrest and were later released with summonses.

After further investigation, police said, Shaneika S. Johnson, 40, of Newark, was charged with obstructing the administration of law after she was identified as one of the conspirators. She was mailed a summons.

This case remains under active investigation.

Jan. 17 At 12:24 a.m., Officer Matthew Knighton, patrolling at Kearny and Columbia ave-

nues, saw a black 2020 Mercedes with an illegal license plate cover tailgating another car. Knighton stopped the Mercedes and found the odor of raw marijuana wafting out the windows, police said.

A search of the vehicle allegedly revealed 184 grams of marijuana packaged for retail sale, two bags of marijuana remnants, three packs of rolling papers, a cigar splitter, two lighters, a box of 15 “Twisted Hemp” wraps and $1,230 in cash.

Driver Timothy J. Finan, 23, of Clifton — who reportedly had an additional $408 on him — ended up in the Hudson County Jail on charges of possession of pot, possession with intent to distribute, intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school and 500 feet of a public park and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also cited for tailgating, improper license plate display and possession of CDS in an MV. *** At 3:56 a.m., Officer Anthony Oliveira was on patrol near the Belleville Turnpike and Kearny Avenue when he saw a Dodge Charger weaving across the lane lines and then strike a curb.

He stopped the car to find the driver “enveloped in the odor of alcoholic beverage,” police said. After her reported failure to negotiate field sobriety tests, Madeline Bosque, 41, of Kearny, was charged with DWI, careless driving and failure to observe traffic lanes.

She was later released to a responsible adult.

Belleville boys’ hoops on a tear When veteran basketball coach Jim Catalano decided to return to his roots two years ago and coach the boys’ basketball team at his high school alma mater, namely Belleville High School, he had no idea that it would turn out to be this successful.

“We had some young kids who had to step it up,” said Catalano, who was the long-time head coach at New Jersey Tech, now known as NJIT. “We lost three starters to illness and injury. We were just starting to come together and then the kids went down.

We had to bring up JV ( junior varsity) players. I had no idea at all what they were going to do.”

The Buccaneers, who finished a respectable 15-9 last season, had to replace a ton of talent. Junior Danny Castillo went down with a serious illness and remains hospitalized. Zair Stevens broke a bone in his hand.

Shanne Laguindanum suffered an ankle injury. The team appeared headed for disaster.

But Catalano gave the younger kids on the team a chance to play. Lo and behold, the results are staggering.

The Belleville Bucs are bucking up, winning seven straight games to improve to 10-5 overall. They appear to be in excellent shape for the post-season tournaments, namely the Essex County Tournament and

the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group III playoffs, with a strong possibility of securing a home game in the state playoffs.

It’s no small accomplishment to win seven straight high school basketball games. But especially since the Buccaneers had to overcome such adversity and inserted young and inexperienced players in key roles, it makes the run even more impressive.

“Little by little, they have been coming together,” Catalano said. “I tell them that if they play defense, they always have a shot.”

Sure enough, Catalano’s words ring true, because the Bucs held a high-scoring Caldwell team to just 30 total points in a 44-30 victory last Thursday. Caldwell entered the game with a stellar 10-1 record, but the Bucs took it to the Chiefs.

“They are buying into my little quirky things,” Catalano said. “And the excitement is there. You should see the kids on the bench screaming and yelling.

When you win, basketball is a lot of fun. We’re having fun.”

Catalano was asked about the win streak.

“I really don’t care about things like that,” said Catalano, who is the headmaster at The Patrick School in Hillside. “I just can tell that the building is excited. The place is packed for every See VIEW, Page 11

Kearny wrestlers muddle through some tough times

ony Carratura, Jr. really had high hopes and deep aspirations for his Kearny High School wrestling team.

The Kardinals were supposed to have a talent-packed lineup, so Carratura, the son of the late legendary Kearny wrestling coach, did like his father used to do and picked up matches with competitive programs all over the state, knowing for sure the Kardinals would be able to secure their share of victories.

But along the way, the Kardinals suffered a handful of devastating injuries, including a knee injury to defending District 11 champion Jacob Baeza.

The talented Baeza, a junior, was undefeated (9-0) at 126 pounds, but suffered the injury that may require surgery. If the surgery is needed, then Baeza would be lost for the season. He still might be out of service with the way the knee currently is.

“Jacob hasn’t wrestled in a while,” Carratura said. “We’ve tried some things by taping it and wearing a brace, but it’s still not right.”

Baeza went to the NJSIAA state championships last year in

Atlantic City. He had hopes of making a return trip, but the knee may keep him away. Stay tuned.

Baeza is not the only Kardinal wrestler out of action. Senior Adam Chew, the team’s veteran 152-pounder, suffered a dislocated shoulder recently and he’s lost for the season.

The loss of the two key wrestlers has caused havoc throughout the Kardinals’ lineup during the busy dual meet season – and busy is an understatement.

The Kardinals have a 7-8 record right now and sit in ninth place in the latest North Jersey Section 1, Group IV rankings for the upcoming NJSIAA state sectionals. The Kardinals have qualified for the state sectionals the last two seasons and it would be nice to make it three straight.

As of the last rankings released by the NJSIAA dated Jan. 19, the Kardinals trail eighth-place Roxbury by just one-third of a power point. The cutoff for qualifying is Saturday, so the Kardinals have to win their two scheduled matches this week to push their way into the state tournament.

“We’ll see how it goes,” Carratura said. “We’ve wrestled some tough teams this year and we’re still pushing forward. We have some kids who are winning,

but we have some holes in the lineup that are just too much to overcome.”

Carratura said that the Kardinals lost two heartbreaking matches to Whippany Park and Bloomfield. A victory over the neighboring Bengals would have probably clinched the state playoff berth, so now the Kardinals have to get there another way.

“Those are two losses that bothered me,” Carratura said.

“We just couldn’t compete. The good thing is that our younger kids are getting the opportunity to wrestle tough competition. We have seniors who are winning, but we just don’t have enough.

We’re staying positive and having fun. That’s the main thing.”

The Kardinals have an experienced wrestler at 106 pounds in junior Daniel Silveira, who owns a strong 16-4 record thus far.

“Daniel is wrestling well,” Carratura said. “He’s hitting his stride a little bit. He’s been wrestling a while and has put all his tools together this year. He’s a tall kid, maybe the tallest kid on the team and he’s 106 pounds. He uses his height to his advantage.

I think the keys for Daniel are his size and experience.”

At 120 pounds is solid senior Vinnie Ruccatano, who has the look of an experienced wrestler.

Ruccatano is also a good baseball player, but right now, he has a solid 14-4 record.

“He just comes out and is aggressive right away,” Carratura said. “He goes out there and looks to pin.”

Carratura has high hopes for Ruccatano.

At 126 pounds was supposed to be Baeza, who is one of the best wrestlers Kearny has produced and kept in the varsity program.

“He’s putting everything together for his final year,” Carratura said. “He’s having a great season.”

Finally, at 285, the heavyweight class, stands junior Devin Narvaez, who is hovering around .500.

“I’d like him to be more aggressive,” Carratura said. “It’s only his second year wrestling, but we need him to be more aggressive.”

Narvaez holds an 8-8 record thus far.

The Kardinals will face Belleville and Livingston in a trimeet Saturday at Belleville with the state tournament berth hanging there for the Kards to take.

“It should be a good test,” Carratura said. “We’re still pushing toward the District (11 at Morristown) and hopefully send seven or eight to the Regions (Region 3 at West Orange).

Before that, they have the Hudson County Duals next Saturday, Feb. 8 at Union City. That should be a great day of wrestling.

“We have to see what happens,” Carratura said.

The state sectionals are there for the taking.

Lyndhurst’s Berko proven to be a two-sport star

J

onathon Berko was asked the tough question right away.

In the spring, Berko is a standout baseball player for Lyndhurst High School, so much so that he was named The Observer Athlete of the Week last May. But in the winter months, Berko is a sensational goalkeeper for the Lyndhurst/Hackensack/Paramus co-operative, earning his place as perhaps the finest net minder in all of northern New Jersey.

So what is it? Is the senior a baseball player who plays hockey? Or is Berko a hockey player who plays baseball? In any case, he’s a brilliant athlete with an incredible future.

“I still think I’m a hockey player,” Berko said. “Even though I’m probably going to be a baseball player in college, being a hockey player is so natural to me. I’ve been playing

hockey for so long. But if I try to play hockey in college, I have to play three years in junior hockey. Right now, I want to go to college, so I’ll go the baseball route.”

For now, Berko is a dominating goalie, one who had an incredible week of stopping shots for the Lyndhurst/Hackensack/Paramus squad. He made 31 saves in a 3-2 win over state-ranked Northern Valley/ Old Tappan, collected 39 saves in a 2-2 tie with powerhouse River Dell, whose coach Steve Jaskot died of complications from a staph infection at the age of 34, and made 42 saves in a 3-0 loss to No. 4-ranked St. Joseph of Montvale.

And for his efforts, Berko has been selected as The Observer Athlete of the Week last week, joining a rare list of athletes that have earned Athlete of the Week for more than one sport.

But Berko is the first in the 20-year history of the weekly honor to be named for hockey and baseball.

“He’s a hell of an athlete,” Lyndhurst/Hackensack/Paramus hockey head coach Denis Jelcic said. “He’s faced 366 shots this year and made 348 saves.

He’s allowed just 18 goals. He’s just a stud there in net. He’s also a stud baseball player. It’s amazing. He knows where the shot is going before it’s taken. He’s so smart in goal.”

Jelcic said that Berko had a little bit of a chip on his shoulder after transferring back home to Lyndhurst from Don Bosco Prep.

“He had to adjust,” Jelcic said.

“He wasn’t playing all the time and his attitude was poor. But that attitude changed. He is now the best player on the ice every night. All we need to do is score a few goals and we should be okay.”

Berko had to share time last season, but this year, he’s been in net for every single game.

“I love hockey and could play every day,” Berko said. “Every See ATHLETE, Page 14

Jelcic said that Berko reminds him of star National Hockey League goalies like Mike Richter of the New York Rangers and Grant Fuhr of the Edmonton Oilers, short net minders who moved freely from post to post to make save after save.

“That’s who he reminds me of,” Jelcic said.

Berko would rather be considered with Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings or recently retired star Martin Brodeur of the Devils.

“I think they are both athletic goalies,” Berko said.

“They’re also strong with their glove hand. I try to make as many saves with my glove. It comes natural to me. It’s always been natural.

That’s my No. 1 thing. It’s always my first move.”

Berko said that he’s working on his puck handling, which Brodeur totally mastered.

“I have to keep the play moving,” Berko said. “That’s the main thing.”

Berko said that he really didn’t pay attention to the opposition last week.

“I just wanted to try to win three hockey games,” Berko said. “I always take them one game at a time. I didn’t want to look too far ahead.”

“You see that game on the schedule and you can’t think about anything else,” Berko said. “I was really excited.

It’s a shame we lost.”

“He knows we’re not as skilled and talented as we have been before,” Jelcic said. “He has to be more of a voice. He’s a team captain who leads by example. He knows that he’s going to give us a chance to win every game. He wants to win at all cost. He’s never worried. He just tells his teammates to score a couple and we’ll win.

There’s no stopping him. I always wanted a great goalie, but I have a great goalie who is a great person. That’s what we got.”

Berko is uncertain what he plans to do after he graduates from high school. He has excellent grades, with a 3.8 grade point average and a score of 1100 on the Scholastic Aptitude Tests.

Berko is getting interest in baseball from places like Monmouth, Rutgers, Brookdale Community College and Caldwell. He might want to study law one day, but he’s undecided about a college major.

For now, Berko wants to give his team a chance to win in the upcoming state tournament.

“I want the playoffs to come already,” Berko said. “I want to go further than the last game last year.”

But there’s no question.

Born in Kearny, Linda was a lifelong resident before moving to Belvidere two years ago. A member of the C.W.A., Linda worked as a secretary for Bell Atlantic for many years until retiring in 2002.

Linda also held a position as a teacher’s aide at Washington and Garfield school, Kearny, for many years; she held this job near to her heart. Linda enjoyed making arts and crafts, and especially treasured time spent with her grandbabies.

North-Central Elks District choose Bennett as Special Children’s Person of the Year

H

arrison Councilman Larry Bennett is going to have to put an addition onto his home sometime soon at this rate.

And it’s because it seems like — and really, it’s true — he’s constantly being recognized for his volunteer work and service to the community.

So soon, he’s going to need more room for all the hardware he collects.

And you can now add one more achievement to that growing list of accolades — he’s been selected as the North Central District of the Elks’ Special Children’s Person of the Year.

Bennett was a unanimous selection of the North Central district’s Special Children’s Person of the Year committee.

Bennett’s selection, Chris Brown, the chairwoman of the committee, noted why Bennett, the former exulted ruler of the Harrison-East Newark Elks, was chosen for the award.

“The basis for this award (nomination) is Larry’s many years of assisting families that need specialized equipment for their children,” the letter reads.

“He always finds a source. His work at Elks Camp Moore

in Haskell, the building the Harrison-East Newark Elks have at the camp was built by members of the Harrison-East Newark Elks and it is also maintained by them.

“It has been painted, has new carpeting, the deck has been finished and waterproofed, just to name a few things. All were spearheaded by Larry. The camp itself needed industrialstrength washers and dryers and Larry found a source and got them up there.

“Some of the cabin roofs needed to be replaced and again, Larry arranged for a local roofer to go up and take care of them.

“He is an invaluable asset to the committee, the camp and to the Elks, not to mention the various other organizations to which he belongs.”

Bennett will be feted Feb. 22 at the district’s charity ball at Russian Hall, Little Falls.

Continued from Page 8 Jan. 22 At 8:48 p.m., Officer Kevin Carvalho and Det. Mike Andrews responded to the corner of Garfield Avenue and Chestnut Street on a citizen’s complaint of drug activity in a parked car.

The officers found a white Acura, with Nichole A. Ardolino, 37, of Kearny, in the passenger seat, and Omar Lopez, 37, of Newark standing just outside.

When Carvalho inquired about the smell of marijuana, police said, Ardolino “answered by shouting profanities at the officer and causing a scene of

belligerence.”

A vehicle search reportedly uncovered a hand-rolled marijuana cigar and a halfempty bottle of Hennessy liquor in the passenger area.

The officers began to arrest Ardolino, who reportedly resisted by pulling her arms away; however, she was handcuffed in short order.

Police said further investigation showed that the marijuana belonged to Lopez, who was then arrested as well.

Ardolino was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and possessing an open container of alcohol in a vehicle; Lopez, with possession of pot/ paraphernalia.

Both were later released on summonses.

Christine Jablonski, meanwhile, herself a member of the club, took some time to reflect on the club and her extensive involvement.

“When a woman joins the club, she is welcomed with friendly faces with whom she forges a bond by working together in hands-on projects. Service for others is at the core of volunteerism in the Woman’s Club of Arlington, which was rooted in providing access to literacy for the community,” Jablonski said. “Education, conservation, performing and creative arts, legislative and public issues, home life, advocating for children, domestic-violence awareness and prevention, international outreach, communications, leadership and women’s history are among the causes championed by members at the local, district, state, regional, national and international levels of women’s clubs which comprise the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (NJSFWC of GFWC).

“By participating in club activities, a clubwoman takes pride in making a positive difference, one project at a time.”

3 locals join NJ Transit Police Department

he NJ Transit Police Department has hired 16 new cops and among them are three from The Observer’s readership

area.

The 16 total recruits — including Michael Baloga of North Arlington; Ayaz Khan of Nutley; and Jonathan Ydo of Bloomfield — graduated from the Mercer County Police Academy in West Windsor on Jan. 23 have started their next step toward becoming members of the NJT PD. The recruits have now begun a rigorous 16week training program with the NJT PD via onthe-job instruction.

“NJ Transit has a long tradition of dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of those who use our rail, bus and light rail system,” NJ Transit President & CEO Kevin Corbett said. “I believe these newest members to the NJ Transit family will make a real difference in protecting and serving our customers and employees as they carry out their duties.’’

While at the academy, the recruits learned New Jersey mandatory basic police training. They

began the 21-week course at the August.

The curriculum is approved by the Police Training Commission, Department of Law and Public Safety within the Division of Criminal Justice.

Meanwhile, a priest in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark agreed to speak to The Observer on the condition of his getting anonymity because only Margiotta is authorized to speak about the situation. The priest says he’s known DiStefano “for a long time,” and “seriously doubts he is capable” of breaking the law.

“He is a priest’s priest and he takes his vocation very seriously — and is very dedicated to the world of Catholic education,” he said. “It is my sincere hope that this is just a misunderstanding — or a series of them. The Sal DiStefano I know is not capable of breaking the law — any law.”
