Mom, her son, 7, die in Park Avenue blaze Good Samaritan able to save man, 74, who struggled to escape

By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com Immediately upon their arrival at 320 Park Ave., Nutley, on a cold, somewhat snowy Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020, firefighters knew this one would be anything but ordinary. One man was already outside the home with burns — and there were immediate reports of two people being

trapped on the home’s second floor.

Tragically, those reports were correct — a mother and her son died in this fastmoving fire.

The scanner traffic at the fire revealed an absolute seriousness — yet brave calmness — as a fire lieutenant called for EMS assistance. “Put a push on those ambulances,” he said, sternly.

When all was said and done, another man had suffered burns. He got out alive, however. His daughter and grandson, sadly, did not.

Perhaps the most stark realization of what this fire did came in the form a Facebook post from a neighbor, Joe Caprio, who was in his vehicle right around the time the blaze broke out. His words explained how in an instant, everything

changed for one family.

“As I sit here on Park Avenue in Nutley, unable to move my car due to emergency vehicles, I write this post.

Today while just going about our lives, Sandra Caprio, Leo Cap and I witnessed one of the most tragic house fires ever. I immediately called 911, got out of my car and started banging on all the windows and doors around the house to see if anyone was home.

“No one was answering until one final moment, when I was trying to kick the front door in, I saw a hand through the window on the door trying to unlock it. An older man emerged covered in soot and burns. He said to me, ‘my grandson (7 year old) and daughter are in there.’

“I looked up the stairs and saw it engulfed with flames.

There was nothing I could do. Would a braver man have ran up the stairs, I don’t know... I’m torn. Just as I was wrestling with the idea, the fire department pulled up. I screamed at them that there were people still in there, and I saw them spring into action.

“I helped the man out of the house, and he was obviously in shock. He told me he was preparing breakfast when he noticed smoke from upstairs.

He went upstairs and said the fire was in his grandson’s

room. He was unable to open the door, not sure why ...

“As I helped the man to the ambulance, the fire department ran into the house with a hose. Moments later, the grandmother of the little boy came walking down the street, coming back from the market.

Oblivious to everything, she wondered why all the firetrucks were on the street.

She then realized it was her house and she just broke into tears. It was a terrible thing to witness.

“The lesson: Anything can happen in our lives at any time.

Do not take what you have for granted. You never know when one moment will occur that will change your life forever.”

As it so often does, the Township of Nutley banded together to offer whatever it could for the victims of this hideous tragedy.

Public Safety Commissioner Alphonse Petracco, on behalf of the entire Nutley Board of Commissioners and Deputy Chief Fire Paul Cafone, noted the Nutley Fire Department was on scene within minutes, but the fire had already engulfed the upper portion of the house, making rescue attempts very difficult.

Family dog dies in Stuyvesant Ave. fire

A

fast-moving fire destroyed the secondand third-floors of 123 Stuyvesant Ave., Kearny, on Tuesday, Jan. 14 into Jan. 15, Kearny Fire Chief Steven M. Dyl told The Observer last week.

The first call for the fire came in at 10:38 p.m., Dyl said, and units quickly arrived to find heavy fire on the building’s second floor. The initial units — which were later joined by firefighters from Harrison and Jersey City — performed an interior attack on the blaze, but were evacuated from inside the building at a little after 11 p.m. The conditions, Dyl said, were too intense, for an interior attack.

Units then began an exterior attack on the fire, which was declared under control a little over an hour later at 12:05 a.m.

Despite the conditions, only one woman experienced minor injuries — her hair was singed.

All other humans escaped unharmed, fortunately; however, the family’s dog died in the fire. One witness said she saw

the dog come out from the fire, but it turned around and went back in and did not come out a second time.

Three adults, in total, were in the home at the time of the fire, Dyl said, noting that they’ve all got places to stay for the time being.

Chief Fire Inspector Juan Barroso Jr. and engineers were on scene the day after the fire checking the home’s stability, according to Dyl. The home appeared to be uninhabitable.

What to do when a fire breaks out …

As he does with all house fires, Dyl took the time to remind residents of the importance of quickly getting out when one breaks out.

The first step, he says, is to get out of the building immediately and, if feasible, to call 911 while evacuating. After evacuating, all families should have a meeting spot far enough away from the home so as not to cause any harm to those who evacuated. If calling 911 was not possible while getting out, this would be the time to call.

One shouldn’t presume someone else is making the call.

Once firefighters arrive, designate someone to inform them whether all have escaped prior to their arrival.

And perhaps most important — once you’re outside, do not go back inside.

Dyl also reminds all residents of the importance of having smoke and CO detectors in a home. If, by chance, you do not have such alarms, the Kearny Fire Department has them available, at no cost. Stop by Kearny FD Headquarters at 109 Midland Ave., and ask for the Bureau of Combustibles, during normal business hours.

Belleville’s ‘most vulnerable’ getting free H2O filters

A

fter months of pleading and advocating on behalf of his residents, which included a giant billboard along Rt. 21, Belleville Mayor Michael Melham has secured free water filters for Belleville’s most vulnerable.

Distribution officially began Friday, Jan. 17, where Melham got a hand from Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Clara Maass CEO Mary Ellen Clyne to commence distributing them.

Baraka has been a steady ally as Melham worked behind the scenes for months to secure a total of $70,000 in donations and grants to purchase the water filters, to be provided to eligible residents at no cost.

“This would not be possible without Mayor Baraka’s support. I’m grateful for our strong relationship and the relationship our two communities enjoy,” Melham said.

Although the township is under no federal or state mandate to provide water filters, strictly out of an abundance of caution, households with senior citizens, children under the age of 6, expecting and/or nursing mothers and

WATER CRISIS IN BELLEVILLE those under doctor care were registered online to be among the first in Belleville to receive the filters.

The township is reviewing the eligibility of the households that signed up via the website, FiltersforBelleville. org. For instance, residents in the Silver Lake area will not be eligible for these filters because they can easily receive them by contacting Newark Water.

Belleville began to closely monitor its drinking water after high levels of lead were detected in Pequannock-based Newark drinking water last summer.

Melham says the township is seeing progress with Newark’s new water treatment plan. Township officials believe the small amount of lead currently leaching into some residential lead service lines will be abated in the coming months.

Every eligible household will receive a pouring pitcher and multiple replacement cartridges.

KPD: What’s in an acronym?

n Jan. 3 at 7 a.m., Kearny police reported, a woman exited her home on the 100 block of Chestnut Street and found the following spray-painted across the side of the multi-family house: “F--- you NLMB.” Now, most of us can translate the first half, but neither the woman nor the cops (nor your correspondent) have any idea what the rest of it means. In any case, the woman confirmed that the message was not there the night before.

Det. Jonathan Dowie located video surveillance footage of two men being dropped off by a third, who left the area driving a black Honda Civic. The first two reportedly walked to the home, sprayed the graffiti and then entered an apartment in the same building they had just defaced.

“Through a stroke of Dowie-esque attention to detail,” the KPD noted, “the detective remembered two male tenants from this home and a third male who drove a 2010 Honda Civic” — this from a February 2019 incident “in which he cited them for littering out the window

POLICE BEAT of the Honda.”

Police said Dowie’s investigation identified the spray-painters as Jorge and Michael Amorim, 20-year-old twins.

The Amorims turned themselves in at KPD headquarters on Jan. 13. They were both charged with criminal mischief and conspiracy and were released with summonses.

The meaning of the graffiti was not revealed. (Anyone want to hazard a guess?) *** Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following: Jan. 10 At 1:25 p.m., Officer Mina Ekladious was dispatched to a residence on Alpine Place where a Mazda, not belonging to the property owner, had been parked in the driveway. Police said the officer found Victor A. Villalta, 24, of Kearny, asleep in the driver’s seat with one

hand tucked into his waistband (“a la Al Bundy”) and the other clutching a crack pipe.

After Ekladious roused the sleeper, a search of the car reportedly uncovered a bag of marijuana in a dashboard compartment. A search of Villalta reportedly uncovered nine vials of crack cocaine. He was later released on summonses charging possession of crack, pot and drug paraphernalia.

Jan. 11 At 1:11 p.m., Officers Esteban Gonzalez and Nick Funk were dispatched to ShopRite on a report of Tide Pod plundering. A store security guard said he had observed Elias Rodriguez, 37, of the Bronx, conceal $22.49 of the detergent pods under his jacket and try to leave without paying. Rodriguez was charged with shoplifting and remanded to the Hudson County Jail. (They don’t have Tide Pods in the Bronx?) *** At 3:38 p.m., recently graduated Officer Bryan SanMartin was patrolling with his Field Training Officer, John Donovan Jr., on Passaic Avenue when

Donovan pointed out a man riding a bicycle through the LA Fitness parking lot. Police said the cyclist, Paul Alva Campos, 30, of Jersey City, who “is wellacquainted with members of the department,” dismounted in front of Marshalls and entered that store.

Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Google Images

This past week was a reminder: Fire safety is paramount

The Observer remembers the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose birthday was Jan. 15 and was celebrated this week.

The civil rights icon was cut down by an assassin’s bullet on April 4, 1968, at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. James Earl Ray, his assassin, died in 1998. King’s 1963 ‘I Have a Dream’ speech in Washington, D.C., is widely seen as one of the most important speeches ever delivered.

His civil-rights advocacy spanned the mid 1950s until his death in 1968. King would have turned 91 this year. Did you know King and his dad were both born Michael J. King, but his dad changed both of their names to Martin Luther in 1934 in honor of the leader of the Protestant Reformation?

W

e saw it twice in the last week — enormous fires, one in Nutley and one in Kearny. Sadly, the fire in Nutley claimed the lives of a mom and her 7-year-old child. In the Kearny blaze, the life of a family pet was taken.

It is all a stark reminder of just how important it is for everyone to be aware of the need to be conscientious about fire safety.

Kearny Fire Chief Steven M. Dyl used the fire on Stuyvesant Avenue as a chance to remind everyone of the importance of having both fire and carbon-monoxide detectors at home. And, for residents of Kearny who cannot afford one or both, they are available, for free, at Fire Headquarters.

This is a tremendous project, spearheaded by Chief Fire Inspector Juan Barroso Jr. and Deputy Chief Joe Mastandrea. Anyone without such detectors in Kearny should head to HQ this week to get their own.

Dyl also used the opportunity to remind residents to have a family evacuation plan should a fire ever break out.

There is no excuse for any family not to have such a plan ready to go, just in case.

First, he says, get out as quickly as possible and, while doing so, call 911. If calling 911 isn’t possible during the evacuation process, call as soon as possible thereafter. Never presume someone else has called. All the same, if you witness fire, make the call, because you don’t know if anyone else has. Then, he says, meet in a designated, safe location away from the fire. When firefighters arrive, choose someone to inform them whether all have safely gotten out.

And then, remember — once you’re out, stay out.

This is all of the utmost importance. Because one life lost in a fire is one too many. And knowing how to properly evacuate could be the difference in whether all lives are ultimately spared.

The NJ PMP is considered a vital component in New Jersey’s fight to end the opioid

addiction crisis that claimed more than 3,000 lives last year. Recent upgrades and enhancements to the program have further expanded the NJ PMP’s addiction-fighting capabilities.

Those enhancements include the addition of a

t’s getting more difficult to abuse legal opioids in New Jersey, thanks to an expansion of the state’s Prescription Monitoring Program.

The NJ Division of Consumer Affairs and the New Jersey Coordinator for Addiction Responses and Enforcement Strategies (NJ CARES) announced enhancements to the NJ PMP that make it easier for prescribers and pharmacists to identify and manage patients at-risk for controlledsubstance abuse and misuse, Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal announced last week.

New Jersey prescribers and pharmacists can now track patients’ use of controlleddangerous substances (CDS) on a new NJ PMP platform that automatically examines the data on file, analyzes it and generates an interactive, patient-centered report with visual enhancements — including patient risk alerts — to ensure patients are not being overprescribed opioid pain medications that can lead to addiction, overdose and death.

The recently launched “NarxCare” platform is the latest NJ PMP enhancement paid for with funds from the $100 million that the Murphy Administration committed to combatting the opioid epidemic in fiscal year 2019.

“We’re using the latest technology to fight the opioid crisis, and that includes our new NarxCare platform,” Grewal said. “It is yet another tool as we work to end addiction and save lives.”

New Jersey law requires prescribers and pharmacists to review a patient’s prescription history prior to prescribing and dispensing highly addictive opioid pain medications and other CDS that, when used in conjunction with opioids, can place patients at a higher risk of fatal overdoses.

The NarxCare platform makes that job easier by aggregating and analyzing

prescription information from providers and pharmacies and presenting the information in color-coded graphics that provide an instant, easy-toread visual snapshot of a patient’s CDS history.

The program automatically provides “clinical alerts,” notifying practitioners when a patient’s safety may be at risk, such as when a patient is obtaining or filling CDS prescriptions from multiple prescribers and pharmacies, is receiving daily morphine levels that exceed limits recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is being prescribed opioid and benzodiazepine medications simultaneously or has been receiving opioid medications for more than 90 consecutive days.

Juniorettes spearheading ‘Flow Initiative’

By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com The Arlington Juniorettes are working on a project to help young women who are in poverty.

According to the club, one in every five school-age girls miss weeks of schools each year because they’re unable to afford menstrual pads. Because of this, the girls of the Juniorettes, a branch of the Junior Woman’s Club of Arlington, are working to fix that notion.

Brandi-Leigh Miller, the leader of the Juniorettes, says it was the Rotary Club of Jersey City that was doing some-

has been a local champion for women, it was logical to bring this to the newspaper and to partner up.

“It’s called the Flow Initiative and it was something that really resonated for me and I brought it back to talk to the girls, just as an idea, and they loved it,” Miller said.

The girls of the club then spent a year planning their own project — and they’re calling it The Flor Initiative as well.

“What it is is to collect feminine hygiene products for girls who don’t have access to them,” Miller said. “The idea is to stop period poverty … and

it’s the stigma of talking about this issue and being a woman … there are girls who don’t have access to that at home … why can’t they go swimming because their friends are going swimming? Why can’t they play sports because their friends are playing sports?

Or why can’t they just go to school? It’s not just about wearing white pants — it’s just about going to school and learning.” Miller says this is an issue that is often seen as “Third World,” but it is happening right here in America.

In Kearny, Miller says, there are emergency supplies of pads in the schools, but there are lots of girls who do not have access to them at home.

In fact, she says, some of the Juniorettes actually bring extras to school to give to their friend and their moms buy extras for friends. It’s that serious.

When the project kicks off, there will be several collection points for donations around

town, including at The Observer’s office at 39 Seeley Ave., Kearny. There will be discreet donation boxes where you’ll be able to donate pads, Tampons, feminine wipes, etc.

The donations will be repackaged in discreet bundles at local food pantries at first.

There is a hope to be able to also get donated items into schools’ nurses offices, or anywhere else where social services are provided to young girls throughout all of Kearny, Harrison and East Newark.

“We have such a generous town for all of our service organizations, and I don’t see why this will be any different,” Miller said.

Harrison girls enjoying breakthrough season The Harrison High School girls’ basketball team is enjoying its best season in six years. With seven wins in their first 11 games, they are on pace to top the 18-win mark they enjoyed in 2013-2014.

They’re just two victories away from what the Blue Tide compiled last season.

So what are the keys to success that have propelled Erika Thompson-Mendoza’s team to the best 11game mark of her four-year head coaching career?

“Our senior’s eagerness,” said Thompson-Mendoza, who was a three-time All-Hudson County player during her playing days at High Tech. “They all wanted to have a good season this year. They’re eager to win. They played together in the summer league in Kearny, a very competitive league. They did a lot of things together.”

And that helped the overall goal – playing solid team defense.

“But more than just playing defense together, they play more as a team,” said Thompson-Mendoza. “By being more mature and understanding their roles, they’ve become bigger and stronger. They are understanding how they should play. They knew that we had to play defense if we were going to win.”

The Blue Tide is managing to get most of their points off their defense.

“Most of our points come off transition,” Thompson-

Mendoza said. “We press a lot and of course, that gets me so energized. They get me into it. They have so much energy and so much fire. I don’t think we’d be good just sitting in a zone.

We have to play with high energy, especially defensively.”

Leading the way for the Blue Tide is 6-foot senior Kayla Lucas. The youngest of Harrison legend Ray Lucas’ three daughters is a four-year starter for the Blue Tide who fills out the stat sheet every night.

“Every year, she’s gotten better and better,” Thompson-Mendoza said. “She’s so versatile. I can use her anywhere on the floor. She gets a ton of rebounds. She can handle the ball. She’s so long and so athletic, so she creates a big threat in our press. She gets a lot of steals. She’s a big benefit to me, because I can use her at the point, at guard, at forward. She is also a leader both on and off the court.”

Junior Haley O’Donnell is a 5-foot-5 guard.

“Haley is the spitfire of the team,” ThompsonMendoza said of O’Donnell, a multi-sport athlete. “She’s the one who is guarding the top player on the other team. This year, her shooting has improved tremendously. She plays at the top of our defense. She then keys the fast break with her steals and we’re able to score off transition. I think See VIEW, Page 11

B

efore the 2019-2020 high school wrestling season began, Belleville High School head coach Joe Pizzi believed that he had the makings of a highly competitive squad.

“We had a veteran roster,” Pizzi said. “We thought we were going to have a much stronger lineup.”

So Pizzi packed a highly competitive independent schedule against solid programs like North Bergen, Passaic County Tech, Passaic Valley and perennial state playoff contender Hanover Park.

Add in the excellent teams that are part of the Super Essex Conference like Caldwell and recently re-crowned Essex County Tournament champion Seton Hall Prep, which won the ECT for the fifth straight year last week and you have perhaps the toughest schedule the Buc-

caneers have faced in years.

But there were a handful of solid wrestlers who didn’t come back out for the squad this year.

And then there were some others who became academically ineligible. Sprinkle in a few injuries that happen during the course of the season and almost suddenly, the veteran talented roster that Pizzi believed he was going to have turned into a torn and tattered shell of what could have been.

“We put some really tough teams on the schedule,” Pizzi said. “We’re not going to back down to anyone.”

So despite having the tough 2-7 dual meet record, the Buccaneers are getting better rapidly.

“It’s been going pretty well,” said Pizzi, who is in his fourth season as head coach. “We’ve gained some resistance facing the tougher teams. The kids are showing that they will face anyone and get better from it. You can throw out our record. Once

I realized that we weren’t going to have a strong dual meet team, we concentrated on what the kids would benefit from going out there. A lot of our seniors took on the leadership roles in the (practice) room.”

It’s been a sensational transformation, watching the older kids mentor the younger ones during practice.

“The older kids are really inspiring the younger ones,” Pizzi said. “The older kids are doing a great job, showing the younger ones how it’s done.

The younger ones look up to the seniors in the practice room and in matches. It’s basically how things should go. We don’t have time to baby them. The younger ones are going out there and proving that they belong.”

“I was playing against competition that I didn’t know,” Scheidel said. “You just go out there and play against whoever was out there. There were a lot of D-I (NCAA Division I) level players that I was playing against. It really helped me a lot.”

So the nicest kid around just needed to become just a little better of a player to lead the Maroon Raiders through the season.

But things didn’t exactly start off well in the new season. The Maroon Raiders lost their first three games and Scheidel was averaging about 14 points per game.

“I think I was a little discouraged,” Scheidel said.

Scheidel was also not getting any scholarship offers like others received in the past.

“I had to reach out to schools and had to get their attention,” said Scheidel, who sent out a host of introductory e-mails to college coaches.

“She put a lot of time in playing AAU and getting ready for the next level,” Mitschow said.

Diana Hearn died at University Hospital Jan. 16, 2020, surrounded by her loving family.

She was 58.

Born in Newark, she was raised in North Arlington and then moved to Belleville for 15 years before moving to Bayville.

Visiting was at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. Mass was celebrated at Queen of Peace Church, North Arlington.

Arrest made in strong-arm robbery of Belleville woman The Nutley Police Department arrested and charged a man in connection with a strong-armed robbery that occurred at a Franklin Avenue business on New Year’s Day. Police say they responded to a local business, at 3:15 p.m., when a caller reported a man shoved a woman into the store shelving and pulled her purse from her arm prior to fleeing.

Through investigation, police say they were able to identify Stephen Nemec, 26, of Nutley, as the suspect responsible for the robbery — and that no weapon was used. He was located in Nutley a short time later, and was arrested and charged with robbery.

Nemec was also found to have had an active warrant out of Clifton for $2,500.

Nemec was remanded to Essex County Jail, pending arraignment.

Nutley Police Chief Thomas Strumolo said the victim, a 66-year-old Belleville woman, sustained a minor injury to her arm, but was extremely shaken.

He said the police response and witness’ descriptions led police to make an expedient arrest.

Police Director Alphonse Petracco commended police and expressed concern for the woman who could have been more seriously injured. He said that these types of crimes “are rare in Nutley.” He was pleased police apprehended the suspect and that he is “off the streets.”

Petracco, concerned for the welfare of the suspect, paid the out-of-towner an unexpected visit with Strumolo on Jan. 3. They surprised her with homemade soup and apologized for what happened to her whilst visiting a Nutley Business.

She told police she visited the Nutley establishment because she knows “Nutley is a safe community.”

Strumolo says he deemed the visit as necessary “to assure her that Nutley still is one of the safest towns in New Jersey.”

The victim was advised the man responsible for pushing her into the steel shelving and pulling the handbag from her shoulder was now behind bars.

KPL awarded $55K literacy grant from state The Kearny Public Library is one of 14 that will share a $1 million grant from the state Department of Labor for an increase to adult literacy services.

Jan. 13 At 7:41 p.m., Officer Mat Lopez responded to Hickory and Spruce streets on several calls reporting a large street fight. Upon his arrival, the alleged participants ran in different directions.

Police said Lopez saw one of the runners holding a camouflage ski mask in one gloved hand and chased after him, ordering him to stop, but the man ignored his commands.

The man, later identified as Logan Jamison, 19, of East Orange, reportedly fled through Eugene Rogers Playground (colloquially Hickory Street Playground), down Oakwood Avenue and eventually into the back-

yard of an Oakwood house, where Lopez tackled and arrested him.

Jamison was later released with a summons charging him with obstructing the administration of law and resisting arrest. No information was developed about the circumstances of the reported street fight that prompted the police response.

Jan. 14 At 2:10 p.m., a concerned citizen called police to report that two men were using drugs inside an idling Honda Civic on the 400 block of Beech Street. Officer Anthony Nunez responded, began speaking with passenger Zechariah P. Pizarro, 19, of North Arlington, and reportedly detected the smell of raw marijuana in the car. He then ordered the Pizarro and driver Pablo I. Vasconez, 19, of Kearny, to exit.

Searching the vehicle, the officer reportedly found a sandwich bag of marijuana, a hand-rolled pot cigar and a package of Entourage cigars in the front seat area.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s needs the public’s help to help solve a potential homicide in Union City.

Prosecutor Esther Suarez says that on Monday, Jan. 13, at approximately 9 a.m., a Hoboken police officer discovered the lifeless body of a male in the area of 14th Street and Manhattan Avenue in Union City.

The body was found underneath an overpass near the Union CityHoboken border.

The identity of the deceased male is unknown and he was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 9:40 a.m. The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
