A FRIEND’S GIVING By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com

W

hen one walks into Raj’s Deli, at 750 Washington Ave., Belleville, just steps away from the border that leads into Nutley, it’s not all that overwhelming or impressive. It’s much like any other deli, with a counter filled with candy, lighters and winning lottery tickets. There’s canned/boxed food and chips along the wall to the left and to the right is a deli case with a large ham, some sliceable cheeses and a few other meats. A gigantic meat slicer lives above the meat case. Toward the back, there’s milk, Gatorade and all sorts of other juices. Oh, and, there’s freshly brewed Colombian coffee toward the back — and man was it good.

Pretty ordinary-sounding, though, isn’t it? Yet tucked away, practically hidden from plain sight, next to the deli case and before the large fridges of drinks is something you aren’t going to find anywhere else — sand art, drawn by the hands of Raj’s wife. The “painting” is of an innocent Indian woman who is looking to find happiness and love. The details are almost impossible to believe. The woman’s ring nose, though it is created with sand, looks real. The shadows on the woman’s cheeks — and her blemishes — are beyond realistic. The entire piece is so good, it’s almost impossible to believe it was made with human hands. It’s really like nothing you’ve ever seen before. That’s how good it is.

STATE CHAMPS! Lyndhurst wins first crown since 1983 By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com

T

he Lyndhurst High School football team (pictured at right) continued its brilliant season Friday night, defeating Parsippany, 26-7, to capture the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group II state championship. With the victory, the Golden Bears captured the school’s first state championship since 1983. The win also pushed the Golden Bears’ record this season to 11-0, matching the aforementioned 1983 team for

the school record for wins in a season. There was one other plus from the victory. The Golden Bears will now face Section 2 champion Verona for the overall North Jersey Group II championship on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at MetLife Stadium. Yes, the Golden Bears will take the 3.2 mile journey from Lyndhurst to the Mecca of New Jersey sports facilities, MetLife in the Meadowlands. That pretty much sums up the spectacular event that transpired last Friday night.
