Former Harrison Councilman Daniel E. Kelly, who gave so much so others might live better lives, dies at 65

D

aniel E. Kelly, who served the Third Ward on the Harrison Town Council from 1995 to 2006, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2019, surrounded by his family.

He was 65.

Born in West Hudson Hospital, Kearny, Dan lived in Harrison for most of his life.

He worked in the Guidance Department of the Hudson

County School of Technology in addition to the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission and Driver Harris.

Dan was a parishioner as well as a lector at Holy Cross Church, Harrison, for many years. He was most at peace when helping others, be it through the organization of Harrison’s long-running food pantry or his patronage of the

Kearny PD goes with darker uniforms

I

f you’ve seen a Kearny police officer out and about recently and thought something looked different, you were right. That’s because the department has changed its uniform for the first time in a long while.

And it’s not because Chief George King or anyone else for that matter suddenly became fashionistas. It’s hardly that.

But the switch to a dark navy blue scheme is for several practical reasons, actually — and it all makes sense why the Kearny PD’s officers now wear uniforms quite similar to the ones worn by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Last week, we spoke with

Chief King on the phone about the switch — and later that day, he and veteran Police Officer Steve Montanino, who works in King’s office, paid a visit to The Observer’s office to give us a detailed view of the new uniforms.

King says the most previous uniform scheme included the color “French Blue.” However, that color was discontinued for bullet-proof vests the officers wear — either under or on top of the uniform shirt.

“When we knew the color of the vests, which can be worn under or over the French Blue, stopped, we knew we’d have to go to a different color,” King said. “For tactical operations and safety, the vests are often worn on the outside.”

King says a company

called Elbeco produces the new uniforms. They allowed several members of the Kearny Police Department to wear-test a few kinds of potentially new unis. Officers with different body types served as “models” including some with an average build, some who are on the taller side and some females.

In the past, King says, the female officers had to get their uniforms specially tailored since they were made only for male body types. Not the case Michelle advertising@theobserver.com with the new ones.

were wear-tested.

The new shirts and pants are waterproof, for one. And Montanino, who has been on the force for 20+ years, says they’re the best he’s worn in his entire career — with this being the third scheme during that timeframe.

“Look at this,” Montanino said at The Observer’s office as he poured water from a tumbler onto his shirt’s long sleeve. “It slides right off — and it’s not wet afterward.”

The water did, indeed, slide right from his sleeve to the table under his arm. We touched the spot where the water hit the shirt and sure enough, it was dry as a bone. This will make things a lot easier for officers who often have to work in inclement weather, whether it’s snow, rain, sleet.

It also makes the shirts a lot easier to clean. They don’t have to be dry-cleaned, so when they come out of the washing machine, they’re immediately close to being dry enough to wear.

“Only need a few minutes in the dryer,” Montanino, who had washed the shirt he was wearing that day the

night before, said.

Meanwhile, King says the new uniforms also stretch better and are made from more durable materials.

The pants have invisible pockets on the sides that one can barely see with the naked eye. And that durability will make it much easier for the patrol officers to maneuver, whether it’s getting in and out of a radio car, in situations where they’ll need to run, etc.

The shirts have more practical pockets that are much easier to access — and the shirt zips open and closed, though it does contain faux buttons to maintain the professional look.

“There’s just more function for the type of work we do,” King said.

Now, for many years, the KPD’s uniform was always noted for its gold-colored racing stripe on the pantlegs. For everyday use, that stripe has been eliminated, but not completely.

“The stripe fades and added to the cost of the uniforms,” King said.

The dress uniform, however, does not eliminate the stripe.

The new uniforms also eliminate the tie — at least for officers on patrol. For now, higher-ranking officers still wear the tie, including

King himself.

Meanwhile, King brought the change to the Town Council’s Police Committee, led by Second Ward Councilman Peter Santana. The chief says the committee was completely supportive — and understood the need for the upgrades.

“They’re always very supportive,” King said.

And, for less practical, but an incredibly important reason, the new uniforms just look better, the chief says.

“They have a slimming effect,” he said, laughing. “I’ve lost 10 pounds already just because of the new uniform.”

The chief and deputy chief will also continue to have the option to wear a white dress shirt. There is consideration of opening up that option to captains in the near future, but that’s still under discussion.

Lastly, the department’s shield has been redesigned to better match the new darker-color uniform scheme.

“You can’t even see the stitching because it blends right in,” Montanino said. “… These are the best uniforms I’ve ever worn and I’ve had three,” Montanino said.

Doesn’t get more clear than that.

KPD: A long & winding road to . . .

n Oct. 31 at 2:29 a.m., Kearny Police Headquarters received a call from the Roseland Police Department relaying the following information: Roseland had been alerted that an East Orange officer was pursuing a stolen Dodge Caravan, registered to a Roseland resident, but it eluded the cop. When the Roseland owner was contacted, he accessed a GPS unit in his vehicle and learned that it had traveled to (wait for it …) the Kearny Walmart.

KPD Officers Harold Azurdia and Derek Hemphill then responded to Walmart, where they found the Caravan parked in the lot and occupied by two males — lying down inside, sound asleep. “The officers, joined by more of their brethren and sistren, opened the van and arrested the pair,” a police spokesman noted.

The suspects were identified as Daniel E. Bowman, 18, and a 15-yearold boy, both of East Orange. Search of a backpack worn by the juvenile

uncovered a realistic-looking black pellet handgun, police said.

The juvenile was charged with receiving stolen property (van), conspiracy, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was remanded to the county juvenile detention center.

Bowman was charged with receiving stolen property (van), conspiracy and using a juvenile in the commission of a crime. He wsas released on a summons. *** Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following:

Oct. 30 At 9:20 p.m.. Dets. Dave Bush, Tim Castle, Mike Andrews and Cesar Negron were on a burglarysuppression patrol in the area of Johnston Avenue and Maple Street when they observed Eric Fay, 32, of Kearny — whom they recognized from their prior occupational

dealings — “looking into parked cars and up residential driveways,” police said.

On the 100 block of Maple Street, police said, they saw Fay try a reardoor handle on a Honda SUV and then continue up the street when he found it locked. The detectives stopped him to investigate and also located the Honda’s owner, who reportedly confirmed that Fay had no business inside his vehicle.

Fay was placed under arrest, and an incidental search allegedly disclosed eight wax folds of heroin stamped “Get High” and one heroin fold stamped “Sprite” inside a cigarette pack in his pants pocket.

Fay was charged with criminalattempted burglary and possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia. He was shipped to the Hudson County Jail.

Nov. 3 At 5:41 p.m., Officers Sean Kelly and Mina Ekladious and Capt.

Paul Bershefski were dispatched

to Walmart on a report that three shoplifters had fled the store — leaving behind a 19-month-old girl.

Security reported having watched three adults enter the store — pushing the toddler in a stroller — then take $1,714.07 worth of cosmetics and electronic chargers from shelves, place them into bags and attempt to leave without paying. When confronted, the trio allegedly threw the merchandise on the floor and ran out, leaving the tot behind.

Security took the little girl to their office for her safety. About a half-hour later, one of the suspects, Yaromi N. Hernandez-Rodriguez, 38, of Newark, reportedly a relative of the toddler, returned.

After police arrived, alleged accomplice Jason Muniz, 36, of Newark, also returned but would initially identify himself only by his SBI number, police said. (A SBI number is assigned to a person by the State Bureau of Identification when they are fingerprinted for a

Citizens’ Police Academy coming in early 2020 • A presentation and demonstration from two of the Kearny PD’s officers who are members of the county and KPD SWAT team — Sgt. Michael Gonzalez and Det. Cesar Negron. Both are trained snipers and will demonstrate the weapons

By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com You see them every day patrolling the streets of Kearny. For most, it’s a welcome sight. But there’s no question — many people often ask, “What do the police do on a daily basis?”

That question is certainly not exclusive to Kearny, but thanks to Chief George King and the Kearny Police Department’s Community Oriented Policing Unit, under the command of Sgt. Adriano Marques, the KPD will be offering its first-ever Citizens’ Police Academy in the first quarter of 2020.

“One of the most important components of law enforcement is fostering strong relationships with the community,” King said. “Our Citizens’ Police Academy gives residents first-hand knowledge of the important work police do to enhance public safety and protect Kearny residents.”

This was a priority King set when he became the Kearny PD’s chief following the retirement of Chief John P. Dowie, who will offer his expertise at the academy as a guest lecturer.

Last week, Marques visited The Observer’s office to explain what would happen and how residents may get involved as a “cadet.”

The academy, Marques says, is designed to educate participants of the functions of the Kearny PD, and the role it plays in town. It will be offered in a classroom-style

format with demonstrations of equipment and tactics used by police. Participants will learn a broad area of policing, including how vehicles are stopped, medical operations, disaster preparedness, criminal investigations and crime analysis.

Specifically, Marques says, cadets may expect the following: • A presentation from the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office’s Criminal Identification Division and a tour of the Bureau of Criminal Identification’s truck.

• A guest lecture from the aforementioned retired Chief John P. Dowie on arrest, search and seizure procedures.

• A presentation from the Hudson County Medical Examiner’s office.

• A presentation from a Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor on the use of force by police.

• A presentation from the prosecutor’s office on the presence of gangs in Hudson County.

Sorry, NJSEA, the gas-collection system you claim is working, just isn’t

T

he NJSEA wants you to think things at the closed Keegan Landfill are getting better. If you read the statements they release occasionally, you might conclude the gas-collection system is actually working.

But as we’ve learned — constantly with this group — they have an incredible ability to stretch the truth and in some cases, outright lie. It’s the most remarkable trait this board has.

Imagine that.

Since the gas-collection system was completely installed in early September, a little over 60 days ago, nearly half of those days saw high readings at or above the 30 parts per billion threshold.

EDITORIAL It doesn’t take a mathematical genius to determine a rate of about 50% over the 30 ppb threshold isn’t success. In fact, it’s horrendous. It’s disastrous.

And it’s yet again another example of how this governing body takes the people of West Hudson for complete and utter fools.

But the truth is, we know better.

The gas-collection system has helped ever so slightly, but with these readings, it is obvious to us and the people of West Hudson that it’s not enough.

The truth is, only an impermeable cap

being installed immediately will make a difference. The NJSEA can debate this as much as it wants, but we know what the reality is.

And yet, as they’ve done throughout this entire ordeal, they continue to buck reality. This is a health crisis. They can’t self-police for a second. And the residents of West Hudson continue to suffer.

We can only hope that now that Sen. Nick Sacco’s resolution is set to be heard by the state Senate’s Environment and Energy Committee that finally, somehow, it will ultimately convince the NJSEA that it continues to do the wrong thing.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Writer: Keep ignoring us governor ... we won’t forget come 2021 To the Editor: Since the Town of Kearny began its fight with the NJSEA, we have seen the lack of support by some elected officials.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has not given any support to the

people of Kearny. He must be too busy with other issues (especially the Department of Education.)

Gov. Murphy seems not to care about the health of the citizens of Kearny. Murphy should have told the chairman of the NJSEA to fix

Tickets led by Fife, Pronti cruise to victory

eams led by two mayors who were not on the ballot in The Observer’s readership area swept to victory on Election Day 2019, while two incumbents on the

Kearny Board of Education lost seats to two newcomers.

In North Arlington, Mayor Daniel Pronti’s GOP team won 3 of 3 seats up for grabs, according to official vote tallies from the Bergen County Clerk’s Office.

In the regular election,

Cavadas finished with 1,877 votes. Democrats Frank Marfino had 1,360 votes while his running mate Thomas T. Hurley had 1,329 votes.

In a race for an unexpired term, made possible by Pronti becoming mayor and resigning his former council seat a year ago, Republican Donna Bocchino beat Councilman Mark Yampaglia 1,873 votes to 1,435 votes.

Following his team’s victory, Pronti was elated.

“The people have spoken and have said they’re pleased with the direction we’re taking North Arlington,” Pronti said. “This is a great day for the people of North Arlington.”

Meanwhile, in Harrison, “Team Fife,” as it was dubbed in election materials, trounced challengers in a ticket led by former Councilman Anselmo Millan, who last year gave up his Second Ward Council seat to unsuccessfully run for mayor.

In the Second Ward, incumbent Eleanor Villalta bested Millan 329 votes to 182.

In the Third Ward, incumbent Francisco J. Nasciemento had the most votes of any candidate at 431 to challenger Jesus Carrion’s 95 votes in the most lopsided race of the day.

And in the Fourth Ward, incumbent Michael J. Dolaghan easily thwarted a challenge from Nick Azevedo by a 332 to 118 vote margin.

In perhaps the most surprising results of Election Day 2019, it was newcomers John McKenna and Jose A. Soares who won 2 of the 3 open seats on the Kearny Board of Education. Incumbent Barbara Cifelli Sherry was re-elected to the board while her two running mates, George A. Zapata and Mary S. Torres, also incumbents, will not return to the board.

The top-three vote getters, the winners, were McKenna with 1,188 votes, Cifelli Sherry with the exact same tally at 1,188 and Soares with 915 votes. Torres finished fourth with 852 and Zapata rounded it out with 773.

Bernadette McDonald ran unopposed for an unexpired seat and got 1,001 votes.

Meanwhile, in East Newark, Dina Grilo will become the borough’s new mayor in January. She ran unopposed as the Democratic nominee after she beat incumbent Joseph Smith in the June primary. Grilo had 145 votes on Election Day. Charles Tighe and Jessica Dias ran unopposed for two seats on the East Newark Borough Council, receiving 136 and 128 votes respectively.

In Belleville, three Board of Education candidates backed by Mayor Michael Melham easily won — Luis Muniz, Ralph Tunis and Gabrielle Bennett-Meany.

And in Nutley, Frank DeMaio, Charles Kucinski and Daniel Carnicella won Board of Education seats handily.

Conlon named Harrison Veteran of the Year

T

om Conlon was selected Harrison’s Veteran of the Year and was recognized as such at a special ceremony in Secaucus late last week.

Conlon has spent much of his life involved in military and veterans affairs. He is the son of a decorated World War II Marine and the sonin-law of a World War II veteran.

Conlon says he dreamed of joining the Submarine Force when he was a child.

He achieved that dream by enlisting in the Navy right after high school. After Basic Training, and attending a series of other training schools, he first reported to the U.S.S. James K. Polk in November 1967. He was later assigned to the U.S.S. Francis Scott Key — where he made a total of eight Polaris Patrols and attained the rank of Petty Officer Second Class.

Conlon, a proud member of the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc., is a founding member of the organization’s New Jersey base. He served on the national board of directors for 14 years and as commander for four years.

In addition to his military

VETERANS NEWS service, Conlon is a long-time Boy Scout leader for Troop 304, Harrison. He’s presently serving with Troop 305, Kearny.

He’s also served as a lector at Holy Cross Church, Harrison.

He was deputy grand marshal of the 2009 West Hudson St. Patrick’s Day Parade and serves on the advisory board of the Salvation Army of Greater Kearny.

After leaving the Navy in 1973, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service until retiring in 2003. From 20032008, he taught computers and electronics at Eastwick College.

His proudest moment, Conlon says, was when he had Dolphins pinned on him by Commander Curtis Shellman, then-captain of the U.S.S. Polk.

Tom and his wife, Gina — they’ve been married since 1971 — have two grown children and four grandchildren.

The NJSEA says the gas-collection system at the Keegan Landfill is working. The actual data from readings at the landfill, however, tell a completely different story.

On 10 of those days, the highest readings were in the 20-27 ppb range. The lowest reading was 3.8 ppb. There wasn’t a single day in this timeframe where there wasn’t some kind of H2S reading — meaning that despite the gas-collection system, which is supposed to keep H2S from escaping the still-closed landfill, it is not working as well as the NJSEA would want you to believe — and as they’ve noted in their “statements” made at www. njsea.com.

Meanwhile, Kearny Mayor Alberto G. Santos says the town’s lawsuit against the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, will have its first hearing next month. He made the announcement on social media. “ … The Court scheduled a hearing for Dec. 19 and in the interim restrained the DEP from issuing any permits or exemptions for the operation of the Keegan Landfill by NJSEA!” Santos wrote. “This is critical to keeping the landfill closed (and holding the DEP accountable) since the landfill’s permit expires later this month.

The town’s lawsuit against DEP … alleges the State of New Jersey violated the town’s rights under the Environmental Rights Act and the due process clause of the State and Federal constitutions by

repeatedly issuing year-toyear temporary permits for operation of the landfill by the NJ Sports Authority (NJSEA) without following the mandated process for public hearings and without adequately funding escrow accounts for closure and postclosure costs.

“The lawsuit seeks a declaratory judgment enjoining the state DEP from issuing further permits to the NJSEA; ordering the state DEP to produce a certified accounting of the landfill escrow accounts and to immediately fund any deficiencies; and ordering the state DEP to produce a schedule for the capping of the landfill with an impermeable liner.

“To put it very simply, we want the state to do its job in protecting our health and our environment, even when the violator is the state itself!”

Sacco resolution gets hearing; no word on appeal The resolution state Sen. Nicholas Sacco wrote calling on the state to close and cap the Keegan Landfill will be heard at 10 a.m., Nov. 18 by the state Senate’s Environment and Energy Committee in Room 6, first floor, Statehouse Annex, Trenton.

Sacco said he would continue to push for the nonbinding resolution even after a court permanently closed the landfill last month.

Meanwhile, as of Monday, Nov. 11, it is still not clear whether the Appellate Division will grant the NJSEA its request for an appeal of Judge Jeff Jablonski’s decision to permanently close Keegan.

“One might think he would get pouty because he’s not getting the snaps, but Anthony doesn’t say, ‘Boo.’

Whatever the team needs, he’s there for us. He’s been tremendous.”

Lembo also plays safety on defense and makes most of the defensive calls. He also had seven tackles Friday night, two tackles going for a loss of yardage.

“He’s coming up from the safety slot and making great reads and making tackles,” Tuero said. “And he’s com-

Tuero said that the entire team is rallying around “The Polish Assassin.”

“These kids love blocking for Pete,” Tuero said. “They love watching him run. It’s a beautiful thing. I love watching them play for each other.”

“He’s been outstanding,” Tuero said of Ay. “He’s just been unbelievable.”

And nose guard James Blake has been sensational, adding eight tackles to his already burgeoning tackle figure.

The Golden Bears will look to make history Friday night at 7 p.m., when they play host to 7-2 Mahwah in the sectional semifinal game.

With a win, the Golden Bears would move to 100, which would set a new school record for wins in a season.

The victory would more than likely clinch a berth in the sectional championship game at MetLife Stadium in two weeks. The NJSIAA uses geographical proximity as one of the factors for determining which teams play at MetLife. Considering no school is closer to the Meadowlands than Lyndhurst, it would mean that the Golden Bears would draw a berth at the finest football location in New Jersey.

But of course, the Golden Bears need to get past

Mahwah first this weekend.

No one needs to get ahead of themselves here.

Still, Tuero is loving the way the entire town is embracing the Golden Bears.

Stores have signs in their windows. Signs decorate front lawns. “My son wears No. 71 for Lyndhurst.” Posters such as those are sprinkled all over the town.

“It’s great hearing the old-timers say how proud they are of these kids,” Tuero said. “I’m hearing them talk and it just astounds me. I look around during the games and see the people filling the stands and hanging around outside the fence. I can see that the people of Lyndhurst, they want this just as bad as our players.”

So Tuero told his players a message before taking the field last Friday night.

“This is for all the Lyndhurst players who came before us,” said Tuero, himself a former Lyndhurst football player. “This is for all the Lyndhurst followers. It’s for all of them. It’s for all of us.

It’s just awesome.”

And Tuero enjoyed the final minutes Friday night, knowing that his team was just one win away from the Meadowlands and two away from the elusive state championship.

“It’s just so cool, baby,” Tuero said. “It’s a beautiful thing.”

Kivlehan said that she told Almeida of her decision before the meeting with the girls and that she would help if needed in finding a replacement.

Matt Sleece, the long-time assistant coach and nephew of legendary coach and athletic director John Millar, is the frontrunner to be Kivlehan’s replacement, but Sleece also just started a family, so it remains to be seen who will take over the program.

Stefanee and her two sisters, Samantha and Sydney, were also great soccer players and athletes at Kearny High. Sydney still plays softball at William Paterson University.

“It’s a tough for me and tough for my husband, because we both enjoyed it,” Kivlehan said. “But I was constantly on the field and it’s been difficult, especially with my new life. I’m excited to see what the new chapter brings. It will be nice to see what they’re all doing with their soccer lives.”

Kearny’s Laverde gains redemption Wins Hudson County cross country crown

BAYONNE – Two years ago as an unknown freshman, Kearny’s Maria Laverde shocked the local cross country scene by coming out of nowhere to finish second to two-time defending champion Weeshamar Senatus of Hudson Catholic at the Hudson County Track Coaches Association’s championships.

So it only made sense that Laverde would have been one of the favorites to win the HCTCA title last year as a sophomore.

But that didn’t happen.

In fact, Laverde didn’t even finish the race as McNair Academic’s Claire Chapeau rolled to the championship in county meet record time of 18:35.

“I just wasn’t in it,” Laverde said about her performance a year ago. “I didn’t feel well

mentally. I was tired. I felt like I needed a break.”

Kearny head track and field and cross country coach Al Perez knew that Laverde didn’t have it that day.

“She had a tough season,” Perez said. “I know she wanted to come back from that.”

She sure did.

“It was not a good decision for me to quit,” Laverde said.

“I regret it a lot. I learned a lot from it. I learned that I can never give up. I’m going to finish everything I start.”

So as the HCTCA championships approached again recently at Bayonne County Park, Laverde made sure she was ready for the challenge – except for a slight mishap on Friday, the day before the race.

“I fell,” Laverde said. “I tripped against a sidewalk running in Kearny and went down.”

Laverde suffered a severely skinned knee as a result of the fall.

“But I knew I was going to race,” Laverde said. “I was lucky I didn’t hurt my knee more. That would have been horrible.”

Laverde put a bandage on the knee Saturday morning, but it didn’t last long when the race began, falling off and exposing the bloody knee.

“I went about things differently,” Laverde said.

“I learned that if I take one step back, then I take two steps forward.”

Laverde engaged in an early battle with Kayla Sullivan of St. Dominic Academy, allowing Sullivan to take the early lead.

“I don’t like taking the lead,” Laverde said. “I like to lay back and stick to my race.”

But at approximately the halfway mark of the 3.1 mile

race, Laverde went for the gold.

“I just started to pick up the pace a little and open up the race,” Laverde said. “I wanted to come out and win for my team because I thought the win would benefit my team.”

Perez liked Laverde’s strategy in the race.

“She waited and stayed behind the others,” Perez said.

“She let the other girls do all the work and then she took off. It was exactly the way we wanted Maria to run. She showed enormous focus.”

Sure enough, Laverde did win the race, crossing the finish line in an even 19 minutes, some 42 seconds ahead of runner-up Sullivan.

“I wanted to go faster,” Laverde said. “But I’m happy with it.”

And for her efforts, Laverde has been selected as The Observer Athlete of the Week for the past week.

Laverde’s winning effort didn’t help the Kardinals capture the team title, but they did run a surprising second as a team to perennial power St. Dominic, who won for the third straight year.

But the win enabled Laverde to take her place among the 19 other county champions in

JoAnne Perritt, (nee Generoso), 72, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2019, in Alaris Health at Belgrove, Kearny.

Mrs. Perritt was born in Morristown, and grew up in Boonton. She had lived in Kearny for the last 47 years.

She was a proud member of the Lincoln School P.T.A. in Kearny and served as an officer for many years.

JoAnne is survived by her loving daughters, Tracey Solinski and her husband, Michael and Katherine and Kelly Perritt; one brother, Mark Generoso and her five beloved grandchildren, Christopher Perritt, Nicholas and Jonathon Solinski and Gianna and Juliana Perritt.

She was predeceased by her husband, James N. Perritt; her parents, Alfred and Joan (nee Creatura) Generoso and two brothers, Michael and Philip Generoso.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org or to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) at alzfdn. org. AFA is an organization providing valuable resources to patients and caregivers including family education, free memory screening services and dementia care training, AFA also directs the “Light the Nation” program each November for dementia awareness.

This year’s program began Thursday, Nov. 7.

Cremation was private.

CARLOS S. FIDALGO

Carlos S. Fidalgo, 63, of Kearny, died at home Nov. 5, 2019.

A funeral cervice will be celebrated at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, on Tuesday, Nov 12, at 9 a.m.

Interment will be in Glendale Cemetery.

Born in Portugal, Carlos moved to Newark in 1971, and finally settled in Kearny with his family in 1987. He very much enjoyed his work as a commercial fisherman for over 30 years. Later, he went to work in construction for ILA Local 472 for 10 years before retiring.

An avid soccer fan, Carlos enjoyed both watching the sport, and teaching his kids so they could play it together.

He was also a talented chef.

Carlos was the beloved husband of Rosa S. (nee Salvador) Fidalgo; loving father of Carlos S. Fidalgo, Jason S. Fidalgo and Marco S. Fidalgo; dear grandfather of Isabella Rose Fidalgo and Mason Anthony Fidalgo, cherished brother of Helena Dias and Rosa Fidalgo.

He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

While Laverde is the first Kardinal girl to win the county cross county title since 2012, she certainly belongs on the same plateau as some of the more recent champions like Erika Alzamora (2012), Cayleigh Solano (2010), Tanya Bernadino (2008), Jennifer Arocha (2006) and Denise Araujo (2004).

Laverde was aware of all the other champions.

The list also includes threetime champions Paula Costa (1991 through 1993) and Liz Duarte (1985, 1986 and 1988) and two-time champions Julie Corbett (1995 and 1996) and Laura Wronski (1981 and 1982).

Other Kearny cross country county champs include Ann Marie Richard (1990), Donna Scheifer (1983) and Kathy Gray (1980).

Perez said that Laverde displayed a lot of intestinal fortitude in coming back this year and winning.

“She’s extremely resilient,” Perez said. “She’s very tough and very committed. She was able to fight through her tough times and stay the course. She showed a lot of resiliency, especially winning here. She stuck with the program and it paid off for her.”

Laverde continued her fine season at the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group IV championships at the Garret Mountain Reserve in Woodland Park last Saturday.

“I’m very happy with our performance,” Perez said.

“I thought we had a chance to win the county. But I’m happy where we placed and now we’re moving on to Holmdel Park. There’s a very good vibe to the team. I knew we could run well.”

Senior Abigail Rosas was 27th overall at the state sectional meet, crossing the line in 21:33. Junior Noelia Almanzar was right behind Rosas, crossing the finish line in 21:36. Junior Nicolle De La Fuente was 30th in 21:39.

But the redemption belonged to the talented junior, whose name will forever be placed with the 18 others who became Hudson County cross country champions – just like Maria Laverde.

Marques, himself, discussed why this academy is so important.

“It’s important for people to understand — when I come in contact with someone, I don’t usually know him,” he said.

“About 8 out of 10 people we come in contact with have some sort of mental illness. I could meet the same person twice.

On the first day, he could be calm, collected. The second time, he may not be having the same kind of day. So it will be really important for the public to understand what it’s like to walk in our shoes, to step in our shoes.”

He also stressed that while there will be a presentation on gangs, the belief is there isn’t a gang problem here, but that “the gang mentality” does encroach on the town’s younger people.

“We’re in-between Newark and Jersey City, so we do get a bit of that mentality,” he said. “The culture is in all communities. It’s important for the public to recognize the signs.”

The first class is slated for 7 p.m., March 5, at Kearny PD Headquarters, 237 Laurel Ave. Classes will meet once a week at various locations for approximately 9 to 11 weeks. The academy is open to Kearny residents, 18 or older. A brief background check will be performed on all participants.

On Friday, Oct. 11, Sgt. Steve Passamano of the Lyndhurst Police Department led a special anti-bullying program for nearly 200 third-graders at Memorial School in Lyndhurst. He was accompanied by Queen Isabella and two of her knights.

Together the group explained the dangers of bullying to the students and gave tips on how to avoid being a victim of bullying. Passamano, a longtime anti-bullying advocate, led the students in an oath through which students promised to avoid bullying behaviors. He was a dedicated parishioner and volunteer for Holy Cross Church, Harrison.

Hedwig “Hedy” A. Wilmot of Lakewood died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2019, at the Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood.

She was 81.

Born in Newark, Hedy was a lifelong resident of Harrison before she moved to Kearny in 1960 and in 1999 she moved to Lakewood after retirement. She was an office clerk at West Hudson Hospital in Kearny from 1965 to 1998.

Predeceased by her husband, Theodore (2008), she is survived by her son Keith and his wife Diane and by many nieces and nephews.

While speaking with driver Tashany Mitchell, a 28-year-old Newark resident, the officers caught the odor of raw marijuana emanating from the Jaguar, directed Mitchell and her two passengers out of the car and discovered a bag of the drug inside her purse, police said. Mitchell was arrested and charged with possession of pot/paraphernalia and given a traffic ticket for illegally tinted windows. She was later released with her summonses.

Passenger Tyrone K. Ellison, 32, of Newark, was found to be wanted by the Essex County Superior Court (no bail, charge not given).

He, too, was arrested and turned over to the Essex County Sheriff.

The other passenger, Terrell S. Jones, 19, of East Orange, showed officers a driver’s license in order to be allowed to take possession of her friend’s car.

However, police said that license was found to be suspended and Jones was issued a traffic summons for failure to surrender a suspended license.

town’s many sports teams as recreation chairman.

At the height of his political career, his initiatives and outreach were featured prominently on the pages of this newspaper. In fact, his family recalls that many Harrisonians would joke that an edition of The Observer lacking a Dan Kelly article was so rare, it would no doubt become a collector’s item.

Following Kelly’s death, several people whose lives were positively touched by the former councilman, took time to reflect on the many things he did for them — and for others.

Kearny’s Len Twist, who has long advocated for feline Trap, Neuter, Return programs, says Kelly was instrumental in helping him establish such a program in Harrison.

“It was the late Mayor Ray McDonough who we needed to convince, but Dan was the one who made sure that happened,” Twist says. “He had a strong love for cats — he used to feed them and may have had a colony in his own neighborhood. But he did so much more for his community — he was a great man who will be missed.”

Another man, who we will only call by his first

name, Lou, of Harrison, heaped praise on the former councilman, for the work he did to help those afflicted by addiction — both drugs and alcohol.

Kelly would often be found at Trinity Episcopal Church, Kearny, offering a comforting ear those who gathered for 12-Step meetings. And though those meetings were anonymous, he never held back talking about his helping others.

“He was always a positive guy,” Lou says. “He was always cheerful, you know, trying to crack jokes. He tried to keep everything positive because he was very serious about his (own) recovery. He always helped others with theirs.”

Lou says he, too, is open about his own recovery, muck like Kelly was, and so he often held a special place in his heart for the former councilman.

“The Lord is my higher power and it was for Dan, too,” Lou says. “It’s such a shame — I didn’t know he died until now.”

The Observer also spoke with a third person who wanted to share her own reflections on Kelly’s death.

Her name is Linda — and she’s lived in the Harrison Gardens for “many, many years.” She says Kelly was instrumental in her life in more ways than one.

were it not for Dan Kelly,” she recalls. “I was really struggling in my life. I was addicted to pain meds. I was drinking. It was just really bad in all parts of my life. Dan did so much to help me get out of the rut I was in. He helped me get into recovery by making calls to get me a rehab bed.

I spent time away and when I came back to Harrison, he was not done helping me. He was instrumental in getting me into the (Harrison) Gardens.

“If it weren’t for him, I am not sure I would have survived. The temptations to go back to my old ways would have been great.

He made sure that didn’t happen. He wouldn’t let me because he always put other people first. That was his greatest strength and weakness. By putting other people ahead of his own needs, I think he sometimes forgot, understandably, about himself. I will never forget this man. He literally saved my life.”

Throughout it all, Dan Kelly was a man who, like us all, had his faults and strengths.

When other people needed him, he was there, whether it was someone who, like him, struggled with addiction or whether it was someone simply in need of a compassionate ear.
