he words “summer school” can often invoke fear in the hearts of schoolchildren across the country. In Harrison, however, summer school is a wonderland of opportunity and enrichment that students willingly (gasp!) sign up for.

With a staff of 25 teachers and aides, approximately 275

students from grades 1 to 12 voluntarily participated in the comprehensive Harrison Summer Enrichment Program, featuring classes such as architecture & engineering, stop motion animation, playwriting, vegan nutrition, instrumental music & band, environmental science and more.

Doctor, originally from Kearny, dies after fall from cliff on vacation in Spain

A

n up-and-coming doctor, originally from Brazil but who called Kearny home, and who was just days away from moving to Boston for his dream job as an attending ER physician at a hospital there, died tragically following an 82-foot fall while on vacation in Spain with his fiancée.

Dr. Daniel Sirovich, 34, was hiking on a small

island in Spain with partner, Kristi Kelly, 28, originally of Staten Island, when he reportedly slipped and fell to his death, Euro Weekly News, an online news agency, reported last week.

According to that report, on Aug. 14, on the Island of Ibiza: “An off-duty nurse attended to the victim initially before emergency services arrived, but there was nothing that could be done to save the man. Guardia Civil called for helicopter support to airlift the body away, but decided to

recover the victim by land in the end.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help defray the costs of Sirovich’s funeral and to transport his body back to the United States. It has already raised $42,000+, some $12,000 more than the initial campaign goal.

KIDS LEARN POLICE WORK AT THE Officer Allan Ford, a veteran in the Harrison Police Department, has spent a good chunk of his law-enforcement career inside a place of learning as the district’s school-resource officer. So you might think over the summer, the last place he’d want to be is inside a school.

But if that was your guess, you’d be wrong.

When Chief Dave Strumolo took over as Harrison’s top cop a few years ago, one of his immediate mandates was to get on board with a Junior Police Academy. Numerous surrounding police agencies have them every summer. In fact, neighboring Kearny just completed its 11th JPA a few weeks ago.

So when it came time for the HPD to get its own off the ground, it should come as no surprise that Strumolo turned to Ford to get it going. And now that it’s over, it’s pretty obvious — Strumolo left it in just the right hands.

Each day was filled with physicalfitness training and self-defense. The cadets learned how to be safe whilst on social media. They also learned from just about every unit the Harrison PD has.

They were also treated to a Red Bulls soccer match, courtesy of the team itself. They took part in National Night Out festivities in the first week of August. They joined their KPD JPA counterparts in South Kearny to “tour” the NJ State Police chopper.

But Ford says it was one particular trip the cadets took that was most moving among all the other great activities he planned — and that was a Port Authority PD-protected trip to the World Trade Center, to what many of us recall as Ground Zero.

Lest we forget, not one of these cadets, ages 11 to 13, were even alive when terrorists tore down the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers on that fateful day — Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001. This year will mark the 18th

And so for the kids who weren’t even a thought, perhaps, that day, the journey there was all that much more important and noteworthy, Ford says.

“We were met at the Harrison PATH station and led to our own private PATH car into Manhattan by PAPD,” Ford says. “Same routine on the way back. It was really something special for the kids to be met, to be greeted and to travel to the World Trade Center as we did.”

When they arrived in Lower Manhattan, they were met by a slew of PA police officers and the commander of the PAPD’s World Trade Center Operations. They were led to the operations center, which Ford says “is hard to even recognize. One minute you’re walking and the next minute, there we were.”

Martin Nystrom, of Kearny, is a docent who leads tours of the sacred

grounds. He met the cadets and took them — along with Harrison Councilman Larry Bennett, who accompanied them to New York — on a guided tour.

And while they did not go into the underground museum, where there are a series of artifacts from 2001, including a mangled FDNY truck, Ford says Nystrom took the kids around to a lot of places where there were mementos and reminders of what happened that Tuesday morning just about 18 years ago.

“It was very moving,” Ford says.

He says he took his own son on the same tour some time ago — a son who, like the cadets, wasn’t born yet in September 2001. He felt it was important for the cadets, just like it was for his own son, to know about the sacrifices so many police officers and first responders made that day.

Talk about a serious dose of reality, or what the cadets might, heaven forbid, face one day if they ultimately decide on a career in law enforcement.

And that is part of the hope with

a JPA — that it not only shows youngsters that cops are approachable, especially when things aren’t so bad — but that a career in law enforcement is an extremely rewarding one on so many levels.

And who knows? Maybe 10 or so years down the line, one or more of the junior cadets will join the Harrison

PD, much like what happened recently nearby when the first JPA graduate put on the blues for the Kearny PD. “We’d love to see that in time,” Ford says. “But for now, we’re very happy that we’ve had our first academy. We hope there are many more to come.”

And with Ford at the helm, clearly there will be.

into the blaze, and last week, Kearny police reported that Alves’ girlfriend, Magan Taylor, 33, of Harrison, has also been arrested on charges that include conspiracy and attempted murder.

Belleville’s water deemed safe for now: officials

Belleville’s officials are continuing to monitor the quality of water in the township in light of lead contamination that has been detected in Newark’s water supply.

There are no restrictions on Belleville residents in terms of drinking tap water and there is no reason to believe there are elevated levels of lead in the water Belleville receives from the Pequannock Reservoir.

Township engineer and water operator Tom Herits said most, if not all, of the lead contamination that has been detected by state agencies in Newark is emanating from older residential (service line) pipes.

Herits said Belleville is required to test twice yearly for lead and copper levels.

During the most recent testing, the overwhelming majority of samples came

back below the acceptable state-imposed levels.

As per Department of Environmental Production (DEP) guidelines, residents are encouraged to let the water run from the tap before drinking it or using it to cook if the faucet has gone unused for more than six hours.

The longer water resides in lead plumbing, the more lead it may contain.

Flushing the tap means running the cold water faucet for about 15 to 30 seconds.

Although toilet flushing or showering flushes water through a portion of the plumbing system, residents should still flush the water in each faucet before using it for drinking or cooking.

Hertis said Newark has recently increased its watertreatment efforts, which will only serve to improve the quality of the water reaching Belleville.

Nutley man bilked of $20K by his so-called ‘grandson’ An 82-year-old Nutley man was scammed out of $20,000 after he fell for the “your grandson needs cash because he’s out of state and in trouble” scam.

Nutley Police Director Alphonse Petracco and Chief Thomas Strumolo say the man reportedly received a call from someone he believed was his “grandson” who resides out of state, requesting financial assistance to retain a lawyer for a motor-vehicle crash “he was involved in.” Police say the man sent the $20,000 to a location in Georgia in separate transactions before speaking to his daughter who advised him his grandson was fine and had no knowledge of any accident.

Police are investigating; however, they warn residents that due to many of these crimes being perpetrated through online accounts and

untraceable Internet connections, once money is sent, it is likely police will be unable to apprehend the suspect.

Strumolo says that this is a common scam that many people fall victim to.

Criminals prey on the victims’ vulnerabilities. Once a grandparent hears a distressed love one’s voice on the other end of phone line, they don’t think to call police or family to confirm it was actually them and act purely on emotion.

This is just one of many types of scams residents encounter. The dialog and means of communication change; however, the results are generally the same.

Detectives are investigating and have reached out to authorities in Georgia.

Petracco says it’s unnerving someone could take advantage of someone in this manner.

It’s a good time to consider organ donation

LAST WEEK, WE BROUGHT YOU THE STORY OF two brothers, Michael and Will Cordoba, Kearny natives, and the incredible sacrifice one made for the other. It was a kidney donation that Will gave to Michael — and it saved his brother from a lifetime of dialysis or perhaps even something worse than that.

There is very little one could do in a lifetime that would be brave, more selfless, than donating an organ — especially while alive — for another human. Yet that is precisely what Will did for his brother.

And one year later, Michael is alive … but not just alive, he is well and part of an inspiring duo that we could all learn from.

This all leads to something many people often don’t face. But it’s a reality that at any given moment, for a myriad of reasons, in the blink of an eye, any human being could become in need of a transplant.

EDITORIAL In Michael and Will’s case, it was somewhat a miracle that they matched in 98% of the categories necessary for a successful transplant. There is never a guarantee of a familial match. In fact, in the case of the Cordobas, their younger brother was not a match at all instantly because they didn’t share the same blood type.

That’s an instant disqualifier.

And, considering that had Will not been a match, just under a year ago, there’s no telling what might have happened. Perhaps Michael would still be on dialysis.

Maybe there would have been a match somewhere in the country — or world — but those chances are quite low.

The waiting time for a transplant of any kind is often low. In fact, the average

kidney transplant wait time is five years, according to the American Kidney Fund.

In too many cases, lives are lost whilst people wait. And that is an absolute, tragic shame.

When we heard the Cordoba’s inspiring story, it was a reminder that the rest of us could do something to make that wait time less. We can get tested so that others might live, we could elect to be organ donors at death — or, we could do both.

What Will did his brother was nothing short of amazing. So perhaps it’s time for all of us all to consider being like Will.

And who knows? Perhaps one day we’ll be like Will. Maybe one day we’ll be lifesavers.

Maybe one day that five-year wait will be substantially shorter. And when that day comes, our hurting world will be a much, much better place, indeed.

KPD: The perils of online commerce

getting robbed after he arranged a street meeting with the potential buyers.

Well, it has happened again.

And this time, both the seller and the “buyers” were juveniles.

On Aug. 3, Kearny PD Officer Ellese Ogando took a

report of a strong-arm robbery from a 16-year-old Kearny boy. Police said he had posted on Snapchat that he was selling items of Supreme brand merchandise, valued at approximately $1,000, and received a reply from a supposed friend of a friend.

While showing the merchandise to the “buyer” and a second male whom the seller did not know, two others reportedly came up from behind the victim and began punching and kicking him. All four assailants fled the scene with the stolen merchandise, police said, leaving the victim with bumps and bruises on his forehead and cuts on his knees and elbows.

After a nine-day investigation, concluding Aug. 12, Det. Mike Gontarczuk arrested and charged five youths with juvenile delinquency, with underlying charges of robbery and conspiracy. The suspects were three 15-year-old boys from Lyndhurst, a 13-year-old boy from Lyndhurst and a 15-year old boy from Bloomfield.

Aug. 8 At 4:53 p.m., Officers JeanPaul Duran and Kyle Plaugic responded to Walmart on a report of a shoplifter. According to loss prevention, Edith Jordan, 47, of Newark, concealed assorted clothing and shoes, valued at $380.66, inside a duffle bag and attempted to leave without paying. Police said Jordan was found to have two outstanding warrants out of Union Township, one for shoplifting ($500 bail) and one for driving while suspended

($500), and three Elizabeth warrants, all for shoplifting ($250, $250 and $150).

Jordan was arrested, charged on a Kearny shoplifting warrant, and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

Aug. 10 At 10:19 p.m., Officer Nicholas Funk responded to ShopRite, where loss prevention said Dion Montgomery, 48, of Linden, had concealed $157.92 worth of personal-hygiene products inside his backpack and down his pants.

Police said he also had a $750 warrant out of Belleville and a $500 warrant from Irvington, both for shoplifting. He was arrested, charged on a Kearny warrant with shoplifting, and taken to the county jail. *** Officers Richard Poplaski Jr. and Sean Kelly responded to Walmart on a 12:29 p.m. shoplifting report. According to loss prevention, Jessica Santos, 37, of Staten Island, under-scanned $326.24 worth of grocery items (tacos, raw chicken, pork chops, et al.) and attempted to leave without paying. She was arrested and later released on a shoplifting summons.

Aug. 11 At 12:56 p.m., Officers Kevin Matos and Christos Manolis responded to Kmart on a report that two shoplifters had fled the store in a black Toyota Camry.

Drive sober or you’re getting pulled over

The Kearny and Lyndhurst police departments — and other agencies from around New Jersey — are gearing up for the state’s largest annual drunkn-driving crackdown.

The 2019 “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” statewide Labor Day Crackdown begins Aug. 16 and concludes Sept.

During the campaign, local and state law enforcement officers will conduct sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols targeting motorists who may be driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

“Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” is a national campaign designed to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving through high-visibility enforcement backed up by educational activities including national radio and television advertisements, posters, banners and mobile video display signs.

The campaign looks to curtail impaired driving during the busy summer travel season, including the Labor Day holiday period.

During the past five years, New Jersey’s roadways experienced 36,778 crashes

and 679 fatalities involving impaired drivers.

As part of the initiative, the Division of Highway Traffic Safety provides grants to local police agencies throughout the state to run the two-week campaign. During last year’s crackdown, participating agencies made 1,196 drunkendriving arrests.

Law enforcement agencies participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over 2019 crackdown offer the following advice: • If you plan to drink, designate a driver, someone who will not drink alcohol, before going out.

• Take mass transit, a taxi or ask a sober friend to drive you home.

• Spend the night where the activity is held.

• Always buckle up, every ride, regardless of your seating position in the vehicle. It’s your best defense against an impaired driver.

• If you’re intoxicated and traveling on foot, the safest way to get home is to take a cab or have a sober friend or family member drive you to your doorstep.

neighboring Carter’s parking lot and saw inside it the stolen merchandise — a baby seat and assorted infant items with a total value of $202.96.

The officers then located suspects David Manning, 27, and Tytaneisha Wilder, both of East Orange, and arrested them after they were identified by Kmart security.

Wilder and Manning were each charged on shoplifting and conspiracy warrants.

Police said Wilder was also found to have the following warrants: $750 out of Andover for driving on a suspended license; $500, Totowa, unregistered motor vehicle; $200, Newark, no valid driver’s license; and $500, East Orange, town ordinance violation. Both ended up in the county jail. *** At 6:19 p.m., Officer Anthony Oliveira responded to Shop-Rite on a report of a shoplifter being detained by management.

According to management, William Langford, 22, of Newark, concealed a cellphone cable valued at $6.99.

He was arrested and charged and released on a shoplifting summons.

Police said he was also found to be wanted by the McLeod County, Minnesota, Sheriff’s Office; however, there was no extradition stipulation. *** At 9:30 p.m., Officer Jose Perez-Fonseca, responding to a two-vehicle crash on Passaic Avenue at the Belleville Turnpike was advised by the driver on scene — a 19-yearold man from Randolph — that the other party had fled in a black Honda Civic.

Police said the teen’s father followed the fleeing vehicle to Newell Place in North Arlington and observed its driver, Angel Narvaez, 24, of North Arlington, exit the car.

When Kearny officers initially spoke to Narvaez, he reportedly claimed he was drunk and hadn’t been driving. Later, he reportedly changed his story to say he wasn’t involved in an accident and was only a passerby who observed an accident and had stopped to make sure there were no injuries. However, police said,

when officers found his vehicle with heavy frontend damage and the airbag deployed, he admitted to driving it.

Narvaez was arrested and later released with MV summonses for drunken driving, not having a valid driver’s license, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident.

Aug. 12

Dets. Michael Andrews and Cesar Negron, on patrol at 4:31 p.m., observed a Ford Mustang tailgating another vehicle on Passaic Avenue near Johnston Avenue. Stopping the Ford and approaching driver, Robert Barker, 30, of East Orange, they reportedly detected the odor of marijuana and saw a clear container of suspected pot in plain view in the cup holder. Police said a search of the car produced one container of suspected weed, two plastic bags of it and one marijuana grinder.

Barker was also found to have an active $500 warrant out of Newark for criminal mischief.

He was arrested, charged on a summons with possession of pot/paraphernalia and was also issued MV summonses for tailgating and CDS in a vehicle. He was released after being given a new court date from the Newark PD.

Aug. 13

Dets. David Bush and Michael Andrews, patrolling Kearny Avenue near Halstead Street at 4:21 p.m., observed a Cadillac DeVille parked with its engine running, ran a random registration check and discovered it was suspended.

When they approached driver Carlos Almonte, 26, of New York City, they reportedly smelled marijuana and, in plain view, observed multiple burnt marijuana cigars in the ashtray. Upon searching the driver and car, police said, they recovered the cigars, one plastic bag and one plastic container containing the drug.

Almonte was arrested and later released with summonses for possession of pot/ paraphernalia, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended driver’s license and CDS in a motor vehicle.

Harrison’s Sowe signs pro contract with Red Bulls II First Blue Tide product to sign a pro contract in over 40 years

boy growing up in Harrison, Omar Sowe always dreamed of becoming a professional soccer player.

“I think it’s every little boy’s dream of playing professional soccer,” Sowe said.

And when the New York Red Bulls decided to build their new $200 million home in Harrison, Sowe’s dreams became more focused.

“Once Red Bull Arena came here, I always wanted to play for the New York Red Bulls,” Sowe said. “I used to go to games there with my father.

The first pro game I ever saw was there with my Dad.” Well, the next time Sowe enters Red Bull Arena, he most certainly won’t have to pay.

In fact, the occupants of the building will be paying him.

Last Friday, the New York

Red Bulls II, the franchise’s reserve team that plays in the United Soccer League, signed Sowe to a multi-year contract.

Sowe becomes the first professional soccer player from soccer-dominant Harrison in over 40 years. David D’Errico was signed out of Hartwick College by the Seattle Sounders of the old North American Soccer League in 1974.

Sowe is the first pro product to be signed directly out of high school and he’s the first pro player in the Mike Rusek coaching era that began 20 years ago.

Sowe had been playing for the Red Bull Academy 18-andunder program this year.

“I guess I had been on their radar for a while,” Sowe said.

“They said that they were watching me play throughout high school.”

Sowe scored 89 goals and collected 77 assists during his career at Harrison High

School, setting new singleseason scoring records in the storied program. Sowe earned All-Hudson County honors three times, earned All-Group II honors twice and was the Section 2 Player of the Year last fall.

After his high school career was completed last October, Sowe said that he was invited to attend some training sessions with the Red Bulls.

“I went to one training session in December,” Sowe said.

“And the next day, I started with the Academy.”

Sowe remained with the RBA through the winter months into March.

“Then they called me to train with the U-23 (23-andunder Red Bulls II) team and that’s how it all started.”

of 1999, a glistening, picturesque ballpark on the banks of the Passaic River, a place with such promise and hope for what was once a downtrodden area in downtown Newark.

It met its demise some 20 years later, an abandoned respite for hundreds of homeless, with wild weeds patrolling the outfield where Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson once played, on the now mangled pitching mound that Kearny native son Matt Smith pitched off for years and along the infield where Edgardo Alfonso took his last professional strides.

Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, built just 20 years ago at the cost of approximately $30 million of taxpayers’ funds, began to get taken down last week by construction crews who were destroying the once-majestic facility to start the process to build a commercial and residential development that are found all over New Jersey these days.

And as the construction cranes demolished the right field stands and tore down the main concourse, memories flooded by for someone who spent hundreds of hours in the ballpark, either serving as the public address announcer for games or acting as the official scorer – or in a lot of cases, both, for either the Newark Bears baseball team or the local colleges, namely Rutgers-Newark and New Jersey Institute of Technology.

The first introduction to Riverfront Stadium, as it was called when it first opened in July of 1999, was as a curiosity-seeking

baseball fan, someone who wanted to see if the ballpark was worth all the excitement and hype that came with its opening.

Indeed, it most certainly was, as amazement and awe were the only words that could describe the first impression.

In the winter of 1999-2000, the Newark Bears’ owner and former Yankee and Met catcher Rick Cerone, a Newark native, inquired whether a certain local sportswriter would want to get involved with his team.

The invitation was first to be the official scorer for the Bears, which was gladly accepted.

In the summer months, the idea of being paid to watch professional baseball games more than intrigued me. It brought me back to the summers of 1977 and 1978, when I worked as the official scorer and public address announcer for the Jersey Indians, a minor league affiliated team that played in Roosevelt Stadium, another location that was razed in order to build housing development.

So in the summer of 2000, I started doing official scoring for the Newark Bears, a team that featured Ozzie Canseco, the brother of the more famous Jose, and Bayonne native Joe Borowski, who at that point was hanging on to his pro baseball career before being rejuvenated with the Florida Marlins, Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians, earning the distinction of being one of a handful of relief pitchers to lead both major leagues in saves.

Rusek has enjoyed a close personal relationship with Sowe since the days that Sowe’s older brother Modou was an All-State defender for the Blue Tide.

“Omar was a ball boy for us,” Rusek said. “Mike Dolaghan (the Harrison Recreation director) used to get Omar from school and bring him to our games. So we’ve been together for a long time.”

Rusek was not shocked by his star player becoming a pro.

“Talent-wise, I’m not surprised,” Rusek said. “I thought he had the talent to be a professional. Because of the history we’ve had, I just

the chance through hard work and dedication.”

Sowe said that he was certain that his brother would have received the chance to be a pro player.

“Modou’s not done yet,” Sowe said. “He’s still playing. He’s still young enough (23).”

And there’s a third Sowe, younger brother Mustapha, who will be a junior on the Blue Tide this season.

“Watch out for him,” Sowe said. “He’s going to be very good.”

But for now, the first pro soccer player in soccer friendly Harrison in almost a half century will enjoy his moment.

“I’m still soaking it all in,” Sowe said. “It’s a good start for me. I didn’t do it for the money. I’m doing it for the chance. It’s a dream come true. There are no other words to describe it.

I don’t even know how to describe the feeling I’m having.”

When Sowe plays his first game in Red Bull Arena as a pro, he’ll know. For sure, he will know.

Sowe gives a lot of credit to his upbringing.

“When you come from Harrison, it’s all about soccer,” Sowe said. “I love being from Harrison. When you’re around good people all the time, it makes things like this easy. The community around me was a big part of who I am today.

I owe so much to Harrison.

It’s a great hometown. When I make it, I feel like we all made it. I’ve learned so much from the great people of Harrison. From my standpoint, all of Harrison has made it. The town is really special.”

Sowe was amazed to learn that he was the first pro player from Harrison in almost five decades.

“That was one of the things that made me more excited,” Sowe said. “It just goes to show how many great players who came from my hometown and never got the chance. I got

Mascara is not the only entity that can cause eyelashes to clump and stick together. “Blepharitis,” caused by inflammation around the base of the eyelashes, also causes redness and stickiness of the eyelid, along with clumping of scaly skin around the base of the eyelashes. The underlying causes of chronic adult blepharitis are not well understood. Treatments for severe blepharitis include “electrochemical lid margin debridement” (which clears any mites, bacteria, and their biofilm from the eyelids); “intense pulse light therapy” (to open clogged eyelid glands); or antibiotics. Treatment objectives are to relieve

symptoms, but cannot cure the condition.

The best way to avoid blepharitis or keep it from returning is to clean your eyelids daily to prevent the buildup of bacteria and mites. played in an independent baseball league called the Atlantic League, the brain trust of an amazing man named Joe Klein, a long-time baseball lifer who determined that there was a market for pro baseball outside of the affiliated clubs.

It was an idea that obviously worked, because the league has lived on after Klein passed away in 2017.

The Newark Bears got better in 2001 and featured both Canseco brothers and former New York Met All-Star Lance Johnson, former Yankees World Series hero Jim Leyritz, former Texas Rangers slugger Pete Incavaglia, former Yankee top prospect Hansley “Bam Bam” Meulens and former Chicago Cubs ace right-hander Jaime Navarro.

That team drew more than 250,000 fans to Newark and lost in the Atlantic League semifinals.

Former owner Marc Berson filed for bankruptcy protection. Frank Boulton, the successful owner of the Long Island Ducks in the league, purchased the Bears for $1 million and actually ran the team with a profit in 2009 with Hall of Famer Tim Raines as a manager.

“The Rock” was an absolute joy to work with. There were so many days spent in his office, just telling stories of his legendary career. I would go into his office to secure the lineup and spent an hour or so just talking baseball with him and his assistants, namely former AllStar Mike Torrez and former MLB catcher Ron Karkovice.

Raines spent three years in Newark. Some of the other names that played for the Bears included World Series hero Scott Speizio, slugger Daryle Ward, former Met Carl Everett and beleaguered Met relief pitcher Armando Benitez, still one of the most hated players to ever play for the Mets.

Before the 2009 season, the Bears had a glorious Opening Day, albeit in the pouring rain. Former Newark Mayor Cory Booker, currently New Jersey’s U.S. Senator running for President, was on hand, as were former Secretary of State Colin Powell and recording superstar Patti LaBelle sang the National Anthem.

That season, the star of a TV sitcom came to throw out a first pitch one summer night and spent the rest of the game sitting in the press box. That star was Bryan Cranston, the Academy Award nominee. He was a joy to spend time with.

In 2010, the Bears had fallen on extremely tough times. The product on the field was dismal, posting a 53-86 record. A year later, the Bears moved to the Can-Am League, a lower classification that also housed the New Jersey Jackals.

By then, prior owner Tom Cetnar partnered with local chiropractor Dr. Doug Spiel and his girlfriend, former New Orleans dancer Danielle Dronet.

That association brought an end to pro baseball in Newark. It was clearly a bumbling circus of ownership.

Dronet once said to me that the Can-Am League was looking for a “rooster.” I tried to inform the woman that it was called a “roster,” a list of the Bears’ players. She insisted it was a rooster. So I went looking for Foghorn Leghorn.

It was only the first of many blunders Dronet would make as team owner. She also told me that she didn’t want any hints of team losses on the website because “losses were negative.” That ended my association with the team.

Dronet posted on the Bears’ website that Justin Bieber was going to perform a concert at the stadium in October of 2012. There’s only one problem with having an outdoor concert in October. It’s called temperature. Bieber never agreed to any concert there, causing Dronet to have even more egg on her face.

The Bears would operate to minimal crowds in 2012 and 2013. By the end of the 2013 season, the Bears were done.

From that point, the stadium fell under disrepair. It was owned by Essex County, but no one put the time for its upkeep. Rutgers-Newark and NJIT continued to play home games there through the 2018 season, but the stadium was condemned soon after and then slated for demolition this year.

And the demolition crews finally got around to performing their work last week.

It’s a shame that such a beautiful ballpark should meet its demise in just 20 years. No one in their right mind could have ever imagined that such a thing could happen. I had to sit there and watch the crane destroy right field to believe it myself.

When the new development goes up on the site that was once Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium within the next few years, most people might even forget that there was a ballpark there. Like the famed Frank Sinatra tune, “There Used to be a Ballpark.” It will be a wonder whether there will even be any mention of the once-breathtaking ballpark.

It’s a shame that things didn’t work out better for the Newark Bears and that great edifice.

He was moving to Boston in 10 days for the position he waited so long for, to be a doctor in the intensive care trauma unit.

Someone who saved many lives and didn’t receive the opportunity to have someone save his.”

A Google search revealed Sirovich performed his emergency-medicine residency at Kendall Regional

Medical Center, Miami. He listed his passions as “music and traveling.”

“Music is life,” he said in his bio. “Everything else is background noise.”

Just days ago, Sirovich took to his Facebook page to announce he was at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, preparing to depart for Spain.

“When life throws you rain and wind, you find a sunny place and to dance together with some amazing people,” he wrote.

And, just a few days before that, the man whose clear mission was to save lives, lamented over the senseless killings a few weeks ago in Texas and Ohio.

“There are no words to describe how it makes me feel waking up this morning, to find out that there have been two mass shootings in less than 24 hours, with 30 people dead and multiple wounded with horrific injuries,” he wrote. “Sometimes we do not realize how precious but fragile our lives are ...

The same report indicated Sirovich slipped while attempting to take a photo overlooking a beach, according to Kelly’s mother, Mary Ann Kelly.

Sirovich was “the most beautiful soul you’ve ever

met,” Mrs. Kelly told the Staten Island Advance. “He wanted to save people. It’s all he wanted to do.”

Sirovich’s funeral arrangements were not immediately known at presstime.

For no apparent reason, Lyndhurst man chokes his ex, LPD says

By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com A 33-year-old Lyndhurst man has been arrested in a reported domestic-violence case, Det. Sgt. Vincent Auteri, the Lyndhurst Police Department’s public-information officer said over the weekend.

According to Auteri, on Friday morning, Aug. 16, the Hackensack Police Department contacted the Lyndhurst PD to report that Hackensack University Medical Center had contacted them to report that they had a patient, a 31-year-old Fair Lawn woman, respond their emergency room with injuries consistent with domestic abuse.

The victim had been driven to the HUMC emergency room by a man who had admitted that he had assaulted the victim, according to Auteri.

Based on visible injuries to the victim, and from statements from both the victim and suspect, the HUMC staff contacted the Hackensack PD to report their suspicions of domestic abuse.

Hatem Ghandour, 33, of Lyndhurst, who had remained at the hospital, was arrested by members of the Hackensack PD shortly thereafter.

Auteri says the Hackensack PD charged Ghandour with two counts of aggravated assault: second-degree aggravated assault and third-degree aggravated assault — domestic violence victim of choking. Additional charges are pending.

The victim told police she had not had any type of dispute with Ghandour and said she was un-

Ghandour expectedly attacked and choked

by Ghandour in his Lyndhurst apartment. The victim is believed to have briefly lost consciousness, Auteri says.

When she came to, she complained of pain and discomfort in her chest and neck, which prompted Ghandour to drive her to hospital in Hackensack.

The victim was Ghandour’s exgirlfriend; however, both admitted to periodically spending time together of late. They had been involved in dating relationship for four years.

Ghandour provided no reason for his sudden attack, according to Auteri.

Ghandour was remanded to the Bergen County Jail on the two aggravated assault charges.

The victim was admitted to the hospital but was to have been released Saturday morning, Aug. 17.
