For Norman “Bogie” Doyle III, some might say a fateful day back in 1992 changed his life for the worse. But to know him — to really know him well — the day that changed so much may have made

life a challenge for him and his family. But life went on. And eventually, it was for the better.

Doyle was on the soccer pitch playing for Seton Hall Preparatory School the day it all happened 27 years ago. He was in the absolute worst place at perhaps the worst possible millisecond. A soccer ball that had been kicked by an opposing player hit him under his chin. For whatever the reason medically, the way the ball hit him, it caused brain damage.

Sometimes residents want to talk about baseball. Other times, they want to chat about the weather, their kids or suggestions on ways in which Belleville can be an even safer place to live.

Whatever the topic of conversation, they invariably stop members

of the Belleville Police Department’s bicycle unit.

They talk about how great it is to see them rolling down the street and their willingness to stop and talk for a while.

Two or more members of the unit strap on their helmets and head out on

bicycles each day, barring rain, snow or other harsh weather.

The police ride along township streets, going from neighborhood to neighborhood, typically logging about 35 miles on a normal shift.

The Belleville PD’s Bike Unit is enjoying great success since it was restored. Residents and business owners alike have appreciated the officers’ presence on the streets.

the police department’s visibility and accessibility.

Members of the unit can carry out their duties as police officers if they witness a law being broken. The emphasis, however, is to be seen around town and learn any concerns of residents. If a neighbor waves, they wave back. If someone wants to share a story, the officers are eager to hear.

Belleville police Lt. John McAloon said members of the bike unit are pleased to see this ongoing outpouring of appreciation and support.

“It’s been an overwhelming response from our residents,” McAloon said. “They have taken to it better than we could have ever imagined.

We are becoming more and more a part of this

community. We’re getting invited to kids’ birthday parties and we’re even being given something cold to drink at local lemonade stands.”

Mayor Michael Melham praised the members of the bicycle unit for forging bonds with the community.

“This has been a great opportunity for the dedicated members of our police department to personally interact with residents,” Melham said. “Because they are on bikes as opposed to riding around in police cruisers, it’s easier to have face-to-face contact.”

N.A. native, now living in Hawaii, pens first novel

GREG SHEPHERD IS A LONG WAY FROM

North Arlington, a place where he spent many years as a kid. He’s nearly 5,000 miles away to be precise.

He now lives in the nation’s 50th state where he’s a music and drama professor at Kauai Community College in Lihue, Hawaii.

And, for the first time in his career, he’s published a novel with Simon and Schuster, one of the nation’s most noted book publishers.

We’ll get to the novel. But a little bit about his life here, first.

Shepherd was born in Jersey City and moved to North Arlington where he lived until he was 18.

“I attended Queen of Peace grammar and high schools for my pre-college education,” Shepherd says. “I was a state champion miler on the QPHS track team and was

inducted into the QP Athletic Hall of Fame in the late 1990s. I left NA to attend the University of Pennsylvania and never moved back. I have a ton of fond memories of NA, but one that comes immediately to mind is stopping off for ice cream after Little League games at the baseball field that is still in use.

“When I wasn’t playing baseball (almost always on the losing side) I was announcing the games and who the next batter was. I also have great memories of high school track. I got a full scholarship to Penn at least partially as a result of my running, that included an invitation to the solo mile run.”

After getting his undergrad degree from Penn, Shepherd went on to spend a few years living in Japan and whilst there, he studied Zen Buddhism and the Japanese language at Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music. And it was there that he

experienced the catalyst for his first novel.

“While in Japan, I developed an interest in North Korea, for some reason, and my novel, “Sea of Fire,”

is set there,” he says. “I’ve always been fascinated by ‘closed’ countries, such as Albania and Romania under communism, so that was my motivation for setting the book there.”

So just what is “Sea of Fire” about?

Here’s the book’s synopsis as one would find on its hard-cover jacket.

“A lone wolf spy’s frantic race to prevent a nuclear war on the Korean peninsula while saving the love of his life from a North Korean prison.

In ‘Sea of Fire,’ Patrick Featherstone, a former JSOC sniper is pressed back into service to find CIA agent Tyler Kang who has apparently defected to North Korea with sensitive missile technology.

Belleville man’s independent film debuts July 18 in Montclair

for filmmaking and acting. It was “Brokeback Mountain,” the story of a forbidden love between two men, that was his catalyst.

“I’ve always loved movies. I got that side from my mom. My dad was the athletic force in my life while my mom drew out the artistic side of me,” Garilli said. “I remember in 2005 which was my senior year of high school my mom took me to see “Brokeback Mountain” and I didn’t wanna go. I was like, ‘Why am I seeing a movie about two homosexual men?

I’m not gay!’

“When the movie concluded, I thanked my mom because I understood these are two actors portraying characters. The film was so beautifully shot and so well acted that I plugged into my head that I wanted to move audiences the same way “Brokeback Mountain” moved me.

And so Garilli’s new passion was on its way.

His first independent film was called “Fratello.” And now he’s got a new one coming out soon. “‘Fratello’ was my first film, which is available on Amazon,” he said.

LOVES baseball. So much so that he was a noted player during his time as a student at Queen of Peace High School. He never expected he would one day develop a love for acting and filmmaking.

“I grew up here in Belleville. I’m a graduate of Queen Of Peace High School Class of 2005,” he says. “I went to Queen of Peace on the Derek Jeter Scholarship for baseball. Derek’s grandfather was a custodian at the school years ago and Derek was kind enough to offer a scholarship to one student every year for athletics. I was a pretty skilled baseball player. I’ve played up to 1,000 games as a child.

Recreation, travel. You name it. By the time I was 18, I was burnt out and I wanted to find myself as a young adult.

Let’s face it. What are the odds of going to the Major Leagues? You have to catch every break possible.”

It was around that time that after a trip to the movies with his mom that he realized he had a love

“That movie was so challenging to get made. I was a lot younger and not as organized as I was with this film.

However I couldn’t have made this film without “Fratello” because that movie was my film school. I learned so much. I think my audience will see tremendous growth in my storytelling and acting skills with this project.”

The new film, “Hard Laughter,” was somewhat influenced by the tragic life of the late “SNL” comedian Chris Farley.

“Saturday Night Live was a part of my childhood. I was so moved by Chris Farley’s sketches,” he said. “My buddies used to sleep over we would watch Farley’s sketches on VHS and laugh in hysterics. This was before YouTube was around. Farley was one of my favorite performers and he passed away when I was 11 and I couldn’t understand why. My brain wasn’t fully developed. So with that being said, I wanted to portray a story about a comedian and tell a rise and fall story. I wanted to make sure “Hard Laughter” makes you laugh, think and cry and I think we accomplished it.”

Meanwhile, aside from his mom,

Garilli says he has had several other influences on his acting and filmmaking.

“Every film I watch is like a learning lesson for me. For inspiration on “Hard Laughter,” I think Darren Aronofsky’s work was pretty inspiring with “The Wrestler,” “Black Swan” and “Requiem for a Dream.”

I love how his style was so gritty and realistic.

“He made two Hollywood blockbusters as of late which wasn’t him. I’d love to see him go back to basics and tell a real story from the heart again. I’d also love for him to see “Hard Laughter” and cast me in his next project.

“As far as actors go, I think Paul Dano is amazing. He was recently on stage doing “True West,” which was amazing and his directorial debut came out in the fall which was such an artistic achievement called “Wildlife.”

I’d love to collaborate with him.”

The first public screening of “Hard Laughter” takes place at 8 p.m., July 18, at the Claridge Cinema in Montclair.

AS WE APPROACH INDEPENDENCE DAY,

where we often give thanks for all of the freedoms we enjoy as Americans, what better time is there than now to also give thanks to all the women and men who protect us and keep us from harm — our first responders.

We always think back to that fateful day — Sept. 11, 2001 — when as thousands of human beings were rushing out, hundreds were rushing in and upward.

Just think about that for a second, because too often, we forget what happened that day.

There were countless human beings who were rushing into the Twin Towers to help.

And in doing so, they were ultimately rushing to their deaths.

But first responders weren’t just heroic that day nearly 18 years ago. Every single

EDITORIAL day, when they put on the uniform, they risk their lives so that we can all live comfortably.

We see it often in the police blotter. Police officers are punched, spit at, have fecal matter thrown at them and so much more.

Firefighters walk into buildings where the temperatures can reach in excess of 1,000º. Just recently, we saw firefighters putting their lives on the line as they fought a fire in South Kearny that involved chlorine.

EMTs often have to enter dangerous situations to offer medical treatment.

And yet, it’s something most of them would say is just “part of the job descrip-

tion.” Well, that’s some job description — and it’s one we too often take for granted as civilians.

So as we approach the Fourth of July, we take this time and space to give thanks to the police officers, the firefighters, the emergency-medical technicians who on a daily basis give of themselves as women and men for others, often without thinking and always without seeking the praise they all deserve.

To all first responders in Kearny, Harrison, East Newark, North Arlington, Lyndhurst, Nutley, Belleville and Bloomfield, we say thank you for all you do for us.

Thank you for putting your lives on the line on a daily basis so that we might live free and safely.

We do not say it enough, but we are grateful for everything you do. Everything.

just days away, the National Fire Protection Association reminds residents that July is the peak month for grilling fires and August comes in fourth. Annually, U.S. fire departments respond to an average of 10,200 home fires each year involving grills, hibachis or barbeques.

Servpro fire and water damage cleanup specialists urge homeowners to check the readiness of their outdoor cooking equipment — like grills and propane tanks — to ensure summer cooking fires don’t become house fires.

The NFPA reports that 7 out of 10 adults in the U.S. has a grill or a smoker. That statistic really highlights the risk homeowners face of experiencing a home fire caused by grilling and other open-flame cooking. It’s

important to take some basic safety steps to help ensure you’ll spend the summer enjoying friends and family and not dealing with the aftermath of a grill-related house fire, Servpro says.

According to the NFPA, the top causes of grilling fires are failure to clean the grill, leaks in gas-hose lines, breaks in the grill body itself and proximity to flammable objects.

The NFPA, therefore, offers these tips to help residents prepare to use outdoor grills:

Man high on ‘E’ arrested following mobile phone robbery: Lyndhurst PD

An Elmwood Park man who police say was high on ecstasy is behind bars after he allegedly caused a scene and robbed a clerk at a Lyndhurst hotel of her cell phone, Det. Sgt. Vincent Auteri, the public information officer of the Lyndhurst Police Department said last week.

“There’s nothing like a Jersey pizza,” Shepherd says.

“I was in Kearny for several days in April of this year, going to meetings in the City for my book and attending some Broadway musicals.

I ate almost every night at Pizzaland.”

“Sea of Fire” is set for release Aug. 20. It may be purchased from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other book reatailers.

Monmouth County Prosecutor who recently won a case with a national profile, the horrifying murder of Sarah Stern.

They all have a legacy and Norman envisioned one for himself, too, one where he followed in his dad’s footsteps as a lawyer. But it wasn’t to be. “I probably would have gone to law school like dad,” he said, had things been different.

“When it (the ball) hit me in the chin, that was the last thing that I remember,” Doyle said. “It took me a year, a year, before I got out of bed.”

Initially, his mom was with him, always at his side, in hospital.

“My mom, oh my, she stayed with me at the hospital for four, five days straight,” he said. “I thought, ‘Why don’t you go home, mom?’ and she just stayed with me.”

During that time, he couldn’t walk. He couldn’t talk. He had to learn how to do everything that we so often take for granted all over again, through physical and speech therapy. It was not an easy task by any means.

After a year or so of rehab, Norman was ready to go home and ultimately, back to school.

But because of memory loss, and the neurological damage he tragically sustained, he had no other choice but to transfer to Kearny High School.

The rigors of a Catholic, college preparatory school education would have been too much.

But that was OK. He remained a solid “B” student, he says.

And, while some things remained the same, others didn’t. For one, he never stepped foot on a soccer pitch ever again following the accident.

“I could have but didn’t want to,” he said. “The memory of it all.”

Despite what happened at Seton Hall Prep, Doyle has fond memories of his time there.

“There was 2½ to 3 hours of homework a night,” he

His accident also changed more. After it, he says, he missed hanging out with his friends. There were also two girls he knows he was very fond of before the accident, but in the aftermath, he couldn’t remember who they were — though he does remember them now.

Still, his parents truly were the rocks who got him through all of his challenging times.

“My mom and dad, their support was great,” he said. “ … My mom is the greatest mom.”

And after all of this, Doyle found a way to keep going — to enjoy life as much as he can, in as many ways as he can, despite the hurdles placed in his way.

He’s on the custodial staff at Kearny High School now, his alma mater. He works very hard on a full-time, 37½ hours-a-week basis, to keep the school in tip-top physical shape along with his custodial colleagues.

And, several years ago, to find an outlet for social and service interaction, (it must just be in the Doyle blood to be men and women for others) Norman joined the St. Cecilia Council of the Knights of Columbus.

Just a few months ago, selected by his fellow Knights, Doyle was named the Knight of the Year and was honored at a special

dinner at St. Stephen’s Church, where the Catholic fraternal service organization now meets.

When he first became a member, they met at St. Cecilia.

Being chosen Knight of the Year is one of the

highest honors a member may receive. His selection meant that his peers believed no other Knight, in the previous year, did more for the local council, no one had a more influential year than did Doyle. Many of the brother Knights who chose

him for this honor are many years his senior.

One of his fellow Knights sang Doyle’s praises following his selection as the year’s Top Knight.

“He’s such a great guy, a really great guy,” Knight Joseph Reese said of Doyle.

“He’s really done a lot for our council and he’s wellloved and well-respected.”

Indeed he is.

Doyle says getting to interact with brother Knights and to be of service for others makes it all well worth the while.

“The comradery is great,” Doyle said. “The brother Knights are all great guys.”

And if he could offer just a bit of advice to teenagers — or young people in general — who might be going through a bad patch, he says, “Always keep going.

When my father was 19 years old, he lost his mom.

“You never know what could happen. Grab the bull by the horns and run.”

BIKES from 02 grant. Several officers rode around town on bicycles, but the emphasis was more about crime prevention than community outreach. The program eventually was halted and the bicycles were put in storage.

When Police Chief Mark Minichini revived the program about a year ago, the bikes were dusted off, refurbished and redeployed.

A local business owner,

John Resciniti of Motorcycle Mall, noticed that the bicycles were functional but older. So, he purchased eight new ones for the police. The bikes are sleek and sturdy, with the word “Police” emblazoned on the frame and the Belleville Police patch etched on the front.

Minichini said that members of the bicycle unit are not pulled from the patrol units. Rather, the bicycle unit comprises detectives, evidence

personnel and traffic investigators, for example, who put their desk work on hold to pedal around town.

McAloon noted there was some resistance among the ranks at first because there were questions about how and when the police would interact, as well as the perceived community reaction. Once they realized that residents were eager to embrace them, several members began to volunteer for shifts in the bicycle unit.

With the resurrection of the Bike Unit, members have been able to be more visible — and are able to interact with kids much more often than usual.

It has grown from there.

Melham’s goal of making the police department more visible and accessible also extends to the officers in patrol cars. Those officers have “walk and talks,” in which they regularly park the squad car, get out and walk the beat for at least 10% of their shift.

Again, the initiative was met with skepticism, but as Deputy Chief Gerard Corbo said, “Once they saw that people were receptive to them, it made it easier for them to get out of their cars.”

In another effort of being accessible and visible, several officers last month found seats on school buses and rode along with middleand high-school students to

school.

It has all resulted in a wave of goodwill. Minichini noted that residents have been sending pizzas and care packages made up of hand sanitizer and sunblock to the police station to show their gratitude for the work of the bicycle unit and other members of the police department.

“The members of the bicycle unit have built a strong bond with the residents,” the chief said.

“As they ride around town, kids ask them to stop and play soccer or join in their baseball game. There’s now a genuine connection between the police department and the community we serve.

“And that always remains the goal.”

Lyndhurst’s Pezzolla named Observer Female Athlete of Year

FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES, Giulia Pezzolla was born to play soccer.

“I think I was about six,” Pezzolla said. “Or maybe even younger. I’ve been playing soccer my whole life. I absolutely loved it right away. It fit my lifestyle. It was just something I did every day.”

Pezzolla became so proficient at soccer that she was placed on the Lyndhurst High School varsity right away as a freshman.

“I knew I had potential,” Pezzolla said. “But that’s when it hit me.”

And Pezzolla was born to be a midfielder.

“The way I play, it was all about running,” Pezzolla said.

“I would be flying. I just loved running up and down the field. I loved it.”

“I think it helped her a lot in soccer,” said Kim Hykey, the head girls’ soccer coach at Lyndhurst. “In soccer, you have to get up and down the

field and Giulia did that so well. She made it look effortless. She had the God’s given talent to keep on running and that made her so difficult to defend. She also did a great job of defending others.”

Pezzolla did an exceptional job on the soccer field, scoring 58 goals and tallying 55 assists in her career. She had 22 goals and 13 assists as a sophomore and tallied 16 goals and had 10 assists last fall as a senior.

“She really developed her foot skills,” Hykey said. “She was a natural on the ball, but she was able to get in and out of tight spots. She really made it look easy. She would do simple runs and keep the ball on her feet. Not many have that technique naturally, but she did it. And she needed to be quick with the ball.”

Somewhere in the middle of all the running around, Pezzolla was introduced to the sport of track and field.

It’s something she never did before high school, but it was something that she took

to right away. It also helped that Hykey was also the girls’ track coach.

“You could definitely see her going from the soccer field to track,” Hykey said.

“It started a little freshman year,” Pezzolla said. “I did it at first just to stay in shape. I just figured that I would try it, but as it turned out, I kind of liked it. As soon as I started, I was hooked. I still had soccer, but track sort of just took over.”

And it certainly did when Pezzolla was a sophomore and started to dominate every event she entered.

“I guess my sophomore year definitely showed me how I could do,” Pezzolla said. “It was like, ‘Wow, I can do this!’

I liked it and had to keep doing it. I liked the combination of the two.”

“She literally did everything we asked her to do,” Hykey said. “Her pure athleticism made her who she was.

“I like the Mets,” Kairys said. “I like Pete Alonso.”

Good choice, considering the talented Mets rookie is now headed to the All-Star Game next week and the Home Run Derby.

Kairys also wants to become a better baseball player.

“I want to definitely get quicker hands while batting,” said Kairys, who is a catcher/second baseman/ pitcher in the North Arlington Babe Ruth league.

“I think that will help me be a better player. I like playing baseball a lot. It’s my favorite sport. I just like the game itself. It’s the best sport to play.”

So that’s the reason why Kairys attended the annual North Arlington Vikings Baseball Camp, run by North Arlington High School head coach Paul Marcantuono.

“It’s amazing to have something like this in North Arlington,” Kairys said. “I didn’t have to drive for an hour to get better in baseball. I just came here.”

Here was Rip Collins Field, where a handful of avid baseball players convened last week for the camp.

Connor Reylance was another of those avid players who attended the camp.

Connor is also 13 years old and an eighth-grade student at the North Arlington Middle School.

“I like playing baseball a lot,” Reylance said. “It’s my favorite sport.”

Connor is also a Mets fan

who admired recently retired third baseman David Wright.

“I like the big plays in baseball,” Reylance said.

“There’s nothing like the big plays.”

Reylance offered what he learned at the camp.

“I liked how to throw to the right base from the outfield,” Reylance said.

“I’d like to throw the ball harder. I hope to learn something from the camp, so I can improve every time I play, get better a little bit more every game.”

T.J. Roman is a 10-yearold fifth grader from Jefferson School. Roman plays the outfield and shortstop in Little League, but he had a special goal in mind at the camp.

“I want to learn how to pitch,” Roman said. “I want to learn how to throw different pitches.”

Roman is a Yankees fan whose favorite player is Aaron Judge.

“It’s good to have this in North Arlington,” Roman said. “I can just walk down here to the field. It’s a short walk and easy to get here.

I don’t have to drive for three hours to have a little bit of fun.”

Nathan Smith is a 13-year-old eighth grader at the North Arlington Middle School. Nolan is a Mets fan, but his favorite player is Colorado Rockies slugger Nolan Arenado.

“I play third base,” Smith said. “I think he’s a very good third baseman.”

Smith also had a goal in mind in attending the camp.

“I want to become a better hitter,” Smith said. “I

And for her efforts, Pezzolla has been named as The Observer Female Athlete of the Year for the scholastic sports year of 2018-19. Pezzolla became the third Lyndhurst girl to receive the award, joining Cassie Indri (2008-2009) and Camila Alonso, Lyndhurst (2012-2013).

Pezzolla received her award recently from Lisa Feorenzo, the co-owner and advertising director of The Observer.

“I’m intrigued to see what she does running cross country,” Hykey said. “I think she’s a natural distance runner. I can’t wait to see what she can do.”

“Now that I’m running track full-time, I’d like to run cross country,” Pezzolla said. “I’m definitely an 800 and 1,600-meter runner.”

Pezzolla is shocked that she was named as the area’s top female athlete.

“I definitely never thought that I’d accomplish this,” Pezzolla said. “I never thought I’d even like track. I really don’t think I’ve reached my top ability yet.”

But she’s definitely left her mark at Lyndhurst.

“No doubt about it, she will be in our Hall of Fame some day,” Hykey said.

“She was one of the best athletes we have had her in a long while. She’s really special. She should be proud of who she became.

I’m going to miss her a lot.”

So is the rest of Lyndhurst.

In 1994, scientists discovered “leptin,” the hormone that is secreted by fat cells and acts in the brain to suppress appetite following a meal. While it was hoped that this discovery could lead to an effective way to treat obesity, it was soon found that obese individuals already have high levels of leptin in their systems, meaning they are “leptin resistant.” In 2018, research reported that “agouti-related peptide” (AgRP) neurons in the brain’s hypothalamus region are responsible for leptin’s ability to regulate energy balance and blood-sugar control. By deleting those AgRP neurons, it is possible to reverse the excessive hunger that comes with untreated diabetes and reduce high blood sugar. Further research may yield new treatments for obesity and diabetes.

Smith also liked the convenience of the camp.

“It was good to have this here,” Smith said. “It’s going to be the offseason soon, so I want to get better. I want to stay in shape for the upcoming season and have fun at the same time.”

Marcantuono was happy to provide a source of baseball learning for the kids of North Arlington. After all, some of them may become one of his players in the future.

“I think that’s the most important thing,” Marcantuono said. “We want to be able to build relationships with them at such a young age.

I’ve had some of these kids since they were in fourth grade and they keep coming back. Any time you get the chance to work with the younger kids is great.”

Marcantuono said that the teaching is a little different.

The kids of North Arlington were treated once again to the North Arlington Vikings Baseball Camp, held last week at Rip Collins Field.

“We try to teach them techniques that they can use now,” Marcantuono said.

However, the development of the relationship between Marcantuono and the youngsters is the most important factor.

“When they walk in freshman year and see me in the gym, they know who I am,” said Marcantuono, who teaches physical education at the high school.

“They become a little more familiar with me. I’m also

Added Marcantuono, “The kids see me and they already have a relationship with me. It’s always good to

have things like this for the younger kids.”

Marcantuono also said that the camp gives the kids a heads-up as to what high school baseball is all about.

“They know what practices are like,” Marcantuono said.

“They remember when we did a certain drill. They remember things we’ve done.

I know the kids and this makes things easier for me down the road.”

And Marcantuono was having as much fun as the campers.

“Any time I’m out here on the field, coaching baseball and teaching kids who want to learn, it’s a blast,” Marcantuono said. “The kids in North Arlington realize how passionate I am about baseball. I’m always here at the field. It’s where I belong.”

“Jayden had some key hits for us,” Witt said. “He hit the ball very well.”

Gustavo Lima was the third baseman.

“He was only a three-inning player before this year,” Witt said of Lima. “He worked very hard to improve and he also hit the ball very well all season.”

Elijah Castro was the catcher.

“We made him a catcher last year and he responded to it,” Witt said of Castro. “He was a little raw at first, but he developed well. He’s a big kid.

Once we put the equipment on him, he got used to it and became a good catcher.”

team, the top pitcher and shortstop when he was not on the mound.

“He can play anywhere,” Witt said of Watson. “He’s an unbelievable kid with a lot of talent. I think he’s the best player in our Little League.”

Watson is also on the Kearny Little League 12-yearold All-Star team.

Angel Vega was the team’s second baseman. He’s only 10 years old, so he has two more years to play for Rick’s.

“He’s a solid glove,” Witt said of Vega.

Michael Jarquin is the team’s No. 2 pitcher and other shortstop.

“He came in relief a lot,” Witt said of Jarquin. “He’s a solid player.”

Dylan Morales, the younger brother of Jaden, is the team’s centerfielder.

“He can go get the ball,” Witt said. “He also pitched a couple of games for us. We didn’t know he could pitch, but he did a good job.”

Isaac Moya is the team’s left fielder. He’s also only 10 years old, giving Rick’s a solid future.

Jayden Vasquez is the

team’s right fielder. He’s 11 years old, so he also returns.

“He plays steady outfield,” Witt said of Vasquez.

Omar Lopez is a second baseman.

“He’s a work in progress,” Witt said. “He didn’t do a bad job.”

Jordan Bernard is only nine years old, so he has three more years with Rick’s. The same can be said for Anthony Fernandez. Both Bernard and Fernandez are outfielders.

“Jordan really worked hard all season,” Witt said. “Anthony was throwing the ball well by the end of the season.”

Witt was happy with the entire team.

“We have a good group of kids,” Witt said.

Witt thanked his assistant coaches, namely Dan Watson and yes, his brother Joe, who returned to coach Rick’s Auto Body this season.

“They’re there every day,” Witt said of his coaches.

Witt knows that coaching a champion is a lot of fun.

“Any time you win in this league, it’s a blast,” Witt said.

“We take a lot of pride in what we do. You’re the team everyone wants to beat.”

Witt also remembers the old rivalries in the Kearny Little League.

“It was like the days when Rick’s would play Arlington Pizza,” Witt said.

But the key to success?

Practice, practice, practice.

“We had the kids out in March,” Witt said. “It was a little raw outside. We all didn’t want to be there, but we did it. We put an emphasis on base running and that helps tremendously during games.”

Obviously, Tom Witt has to be doing something right. He’s coaching the Kearny Little League World Series champion once again.

John L. Catrambone died at home June 27, 2019.

He was 90.

Born in Harrison, he lived in North Arlington the past 65 years.

Visiting was at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home in Kearny. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

John served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952 and was an engineer at General Electric.

The husband of Grace (nee Giardina), he is survived by his son John Catrambone (Beth) and his daughter Lynne Daleo (Dominic). He was the last of 10 Catrambone siblings and is survived by four grandchildren, two greatgrandchildren and two more on the way.

Following dental school, he served in the U.S. Army as the base dental surgeon in Korea. He left military service as a captain and began practicing dentistry in Kearny where he enjoyed a 50-year career.

He is survived by his wife Lillian (Donisi) Trovato, who together shared a rare 60th wedding anniversary this past October. He had two children, Joseph and Laura and three grandchildren: Joseph Trovato III and Nicole and Christina Trovato. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Joyce (Carbora) Trovato

Joseph S. Trovato, a lifelong resident of Kearny, died peacefully in his home early Saturday evening at

and his son-in-law, James Cozine. He had two younger siblings both of whom reside locally. His sister Catherine Ingenito, and brother John, both mourn his passing.

Joseph was a humble man who dedicated his life to his family, his career in dentistry, the community, but most of all to God. While he never spoke openly about religion, he attended Mass every day. It was his greatest honor to serve as a Eucharistic Minister, and as a lector at St. Anthony’s in East Newark and most recently at St. Cecilia in Kearny. His faith was an example to all who knew him.

Services will take place at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. Viewing is Tuesday, July 2, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Service will be on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at 9 a.m., followed by Mass at St. Cecilia, Kearny.

Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
