Keegan saga continues with no end in sight

“Lies and more lies from NJSEA! At their April 11 meeting, they said they had taken active measures to address the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emissions from the state-owned Keegan Landfill by advising haulers not to dump drywall and by repairing a seam in the leachate collection system,” Santos wrote. “They also said they would install monitoring stations and share information with the town.

Not believing them, the town council and I had installed (at taxpayer expense) a second air-monitoring station at John Hay Avenue/ First Avenue and cameras around the landfill to monitor activity.

“Yesterday, I shared video of a huge white plume of pulverized demolition debris dust. And beginning at 8 p.m. last night (Wednesday, April 17), we got H2S reads at the John Hay/First Avenue monitoring station in excess of 15 ppb. The reads continued to rise through the evening and peaked at 50 ppb this morning (Thursday, April 18) at about 8 a.m.

“For those not familiar with the area, John Hay Avenue is a one-block residential neighborhood.

Barroso is Kearny Firefighter of the Year

was surprised he was chosen the 2019 Kearny Firefighter of the Year.

“I didn’t expect it at all,” he says. “I always look at the wall where pictures of the firefighters of the year hang and thought that it would be impossible to ever be up on that wall with other legendary firefighters.”

He says he thought it would be difficult since he’s no longer a line firefighter after he took over as the department’s Chief Fire Inspector several years ago.

But for anyone who knows Barroso, his selection is not only not a surprise, it’s more a question of why did it take so long?

Let us tell you a little about him before he comments.

Each year, Barroso coordinates the KFD’s annual toy drive for under-privileged teens and children. Last year, he coordinated a program that offers free carbonmonoxide detectors to any Kearny family who needs one.

And for many years, Barroso and his wife, Jodi, spend time at Camp Fatima in Maywood, a completely free summer experience for special-needs kids. Barroso estimates he’s raised more than $50,000 over the years for the camp — which is completely volunteer-run.

Every penny raised goes to camp itself for the betterment of the campers.

“It’s a very special place to me,” Barroso says.

So if it wasn’t evident from the get-go, it should be now, that Barroso is a most selfless human being, a true Man for Others. But just why is he so dedicated to doing things for others, all the while doing so without much recognition?

Well, Barroso says life wasn’t always easy.

He was born in Fort Hood, Texas, in 1982, his dad in the United States Army. He grew up in Harrison, though, the son of divorced parents, and was raised by a loving single mother, the oldest of three kids. He has a sister and a

brother.

“We didn’t always have much money to go out and buy fancy clothes and sneakers, but I can say my mother always made sure we had the best Christmas every year,” he says. “My mother is a very special woman.

She always gave us love. She would work a bunch of jobs to put food on the table and to keep us in a nice apartment.

Without my mom, I wouldn’t be where I am at today.”

Indeed, special she is.

But two others also had a great influence on his life.

In sixth- through eighthgrades, at the old Washington Middle School, he was in a program called “Rainbows,” which was for at-risk kids — from broken homes, singleparent households and the like.

“It was a way to speak to kids (for them) to see how life is, and to see the brighter parts of life,” he says. “That was when I met Patti Gerris, who was my guidance counselor in middle school. Little did I know that she would not only be my guidance counselor, but she’d be like a second mother to me.”

Following middle school, Barroso went on to Harrison High School, where he met

Nick Landy, who directed the school’s peer-leadership program and whom he views as a second father.

“They taught us how to become adults,” Barroso says. “We did trust falls and those kinds of exercises. I thank God for having that in my life. It helped me see the brighter parts of life. The best part was that Nick Landy was there and Patti Gerris — and they introduced me to Camp Fatima, the only one-on-one, free camp for special-needs

children.”

Though he’s scaled it back a little since he now has two little kids of his own, Barroso has been involved with the camp since 1997.

“It was a huge part of my life. Me and my wife have the logo tattooed on our bodies,” Barroso says. “My wife attended (as a volunteer) for 10 years … I actually lived next door to my future wife and my mother-in-law was very excited we got together.

her mother says to me, ‘I’ve been waiting for this for a long time.’”

It was worth the wait.

“Camp Fatima was the reason we got together and I actually proposed to her there,” he says.

Before he proposed, however, Barroso’s dream was to be a cop. His dad was a Hudson County cop before that department was disbanded — and then he

Playground named in memory of fallen firefighter East Newark’s Ronald V. Patterson Sr. died in East Newark blaze in 1980

gave his life in the line of duty in an East Newark fire 39 years ago. Now, he will be forever remembered for his heroic act — as a newly refurbished park was named in his memory here.

East Newark Mayor Joseph R. Smith and the Borough Council dedicated the newly refurbished Searing Avenue Playground in Patterson’s honor in a ceremony Saturday, April 13.

The ceremony opened with a prayer by the Rev. John Carlos DeSouza, the “Star Spangled Banner” was sung and retired Fire Chief Larry Handlin

HAPPENING IN EAST NEWARK recited the Fireman’s Prayer.

Patterson died at a Feb. 2, 1980, fire.

Patterson’s son Ronald V. Patterson Jr. took time to reflect on his dad in an email to The Observer.

“My father was born in Newark on June 17, 1943, and died at the young age of 37 in the line of duty as a volunteer firefighter for Borough of East Newark,” Patterson Jr., who was 7 when his dad died, said.

“The fire was on corner of John Street and Central Avenue on a cold, freezing night.”

He was the husband of late wife Bonnie Patterson and father of Ronald V. Patterson Jr. He had been a co-owner of Eagan’s Deli on the corner of Sherman Avenue and Second Street.

He also worked as security guard and was a lifelong Sherman Avenue resident.

The plaque bearing the picture of Firefighter Patterson was unveiled by Karen Kelly, representing the Patterson Family, Smith and current Fire Chief Kenneth Graham.

“The children who will enjoy this newly refurbished playground will long honor the memory of Firefighter Patterson,” Smith said. “The memory of Firefighter Patterson will live on in our hearts forever.”

KPD: We caught carjackers very quickly

are behind bars thanks to the quick work of the Kearny Police Department and its Detective Bureau, Capt.

Timothy Wagner, the department’s public-information officer announced April 16.

Wagner says a 52-year-old Kearny man told police he was carjacked on Friday, April 12, at about 6:40 a.m.

The victim reported he had left his Nissan Altima running with the doors locked while he went into a bakery on Kearny Avenue near Bergen Avenue. Upon exiting the bakery with his purchase, the victim reported he saw a man near the driver’s side door of his car.

As the victim approached his car, a second man punched him in the eye, knocking him to the ground. While the victim was stunned, one of the assailants stole his car key from his pocket. Both suspects then fled the scene in the victim’s car.

The victim sustained a minor facial injury and broken glasses in the assault.

Det. Michal Gontarczuk headed up the investigation for the Kearny PD. Police said they identified the two alleged carjackers after interviews of witnesses and sources — and a following review of several surveillance videos in the vicinity of the crime.

An arrest warrant was issued the same day as the offense charging Keandre Johnson, 20, of Irvington, with first-degree carjacking and second-degree conspiracy.

Johnson’s accomplice, identified as a 17-year-old Newark boy, was charged with the same offenses on a juvenile-delinquency complaint.

Unfortunately, later the same day as the offense, the victim’s car was involved in a crash on the New Jersey Turnpike. The car’s occupants fled prior to police arrival. The circumstances of this crash are being investigated by the New Jersey State Police, who have jurisdiction on the Turnpike.

Meanwhile, Kearny detectives say they developed information that the defendants might return to Kearny on April 15. That day. Dets. Gontarczuk, John Fabula, Dan Esteves and Sgt. Michael Gonzalez set up surveillance on Bergen Avenue — and at approximately 9:35 p.m., both defendants were located and arrested without incident.

Johnson, who was also wanted on an Essex County warrant issued for a prior assault charge, was remanded to the Hudson County Jail, pending his court appearance. The juvenile was remanded to

THE LAST CENSUS IN 2010 REVEALS THERE

are approximately 41,000 residents living in Kearny. With an expansion in luxury apartments in town, it’s safe to say that number has increased — perhaps even significantly.

We’ll know for sure in 2020.

However, a petition to Gov. Phil Murphy, asking him to shut down the Keegan Landfill, which has been circulating on paper — and online — has signatures from only about 10% of the total population in Kearny.

And, when one figures that non-Kearny residents have signed the petition, it’s likely that fewer than 10%of Kearny’s population have signed it.

While it might not seem like a big deal to sign, it really is.

Hundreds of residents have attended meetings of the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority, the government agency in charge of the landfill.

Despite this — and despite many speaking directly to the NJSEA — the authority

EDITORIAL has refused, even with accurate data that indicates a potential health risk, to close it down.

They continue to put on a dog-and-pony show, saying they’ll take steps necessary to curb the emission of hydrogen sulfide.

They do this despite knowing that kids who use nearby Harvey Field have gotten sick, sometimes vomiting profusely, after games or practices.

They do this knowing Harvey Field will have to be evacuated when test results reach approximately 15 parts per billion. Keep in mind there has been a reading as high as 248 ppb! Imagine having kids playing on a field adjacent to a dump with such an obscene reading?

H2S is a very dangerous gas. At high levels of exposure, it could lead to eye, nose and/ or throat irritation, respiratory issues and a lot more. Prolonged exposure could lead to irreversible ailments — up to and including cardiac arrest.

And this authority refuses to close the

landfill. And the governor, who recently appeared on News 12 NJ, says his people have told him closing the landfill isn’t the best “scientific” way to go.

Are you kidding us, Gov. Murphy?

Perhaps the 4,000 signatures — from 4,000 potential voters — isn’t enough to scare this guy. After all, he isn’t up for re-election for another two years. Maybe he needs a wakeup call that the people he’s ignoring are human beings who live and breathe — and who if he keeps this charade up, mightn’t even be around for the next election.

So folks, let’s send a message to Murphy.

Let’s get that 4,000 total much higher. It needs to be much higher. You can do your part. You must do your part.

Chinese Memorial Day celebrated in Belleville

BELLEVILLE — In the small cemetery of the former Dutch Reformed Church at Main and Rutgers streets — just across the Passaic River from the Kearny/North Arlington border — there stands a stunning monument to a forgotten community: Belleville’s Chinatown.

In 2016, we covered the dedication of that monument — built of brick and concrete and topped by a small pagoda — and bearing this inscription: IN SACRED MEMORY OF THOSE PIONEERING SOULS OF BELLEVILLE’S CHINESE COMMUNITY, 1870-1887.

On this May 13, we were back at the cemetery, this time to mark Chinese Memorial Day and the placement of an additional tribute: small stone tablet set in the ground and reading, “To commemorate the 150th anniversary of your historic work.”

Above those words is an inscription in Chinese, which translates as, “We will not forget you. We remember your souls with thanks.”

What was that historic work? The construction of America’s first Transcontinental Railroad, the completion of which in 1869 would not have been possible without the backbreaking labor of more than 12,000 Chinese immigrants.

As Michael Perrone, president of the Belleville Historical Society, noted, “Prior to the completion of the railway, it took six months to travel from the East Coast to the West Coast. Once

Perrone also told us about a near-impossible task those Chinese undertook as the project neared its end: “On April 28, 1869, 4,000 Chinese laid more than 10 miles of track in less than 12 hours! It was a world record.”

The Chinese, most of whom had come here specifically to work on western spur of the railroad project, were skilled laborers, Perrone emphasized. Even though they were used primarily as manual labor, they were skilled workers. Many had technological skills and experience with explosives and construction.

“Remember, it was the Chinese who had built the Great Wall,” Perrone said.

The western spur was also the more perilous portion of the Transcontinental, Perrone noted. It wasn’t a matter of just laying track on primarily flat land. “They had to build bridges, dig tunnels, blast mountains.”

That meant accidental explosions, tunnel collapses, avalanches. Between 1,000 and 1,500 Chinese were reportedly killed during their RR work in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

And when the eastern spur and the western spur finally met at Promontory Summit in Utah, there was a huge celebration — including the placement of a symbolic final golden spike. And not one Chinese was invited to attend. (The new Belleville monument, though, includes a gold spike to make up for the disrespect.)

WMS seventh-graders journey to Beantown WASHINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL

Explorers in the seventhgrade were on the road last week, this time with a trip to New England to tour Boston. The kids made stops at Beacon Hill, the Old North Church, the Paul Revere House, the Bunker Hill Monument and many other noted locations throughout Beantown.

Eighth-graders recently visited Washington, D.C. WMS Principal Michael Landy started the club several years — and it afford the students an opportunity to visits culturally important locations in the region.

Eighth-graders go to D.C. every year, seventh-graders go to Boston and sixthgraders will soon visit the World Trade Center, the Freedom Tower and the Sept.

Whenever the kids come back, they always seem to have a greater grasp for history and the impact it has had on their lives. And, as the eighth-graders did when they returned from the Capital, several seventh-graders took time to reflect on their time in Boston.

“I had a great experience at Boston,” Hana Guachineski, a seventh-grader, said. “One site that I loved seeing is Copp’s Hill Cemetery. Some other sites that we visited were Bunker Hill Monument, Old North Church and Paul Revere’s House. I learned many new things while I was at Boston. I learned how colonists lived their lives and how patriots fought for our

country. Overall, I had an extraordinary time at Boston.

I made many new memories and learned so much.”

Guachineski’s classmate Anthony Campoverde had a similar experience.

“Once we got to Boston, all the homes looked amazing.

The streets would have some people doing tricks or playing an instrument,” he said. “It showed all the places Paul Revere had to go to warn the Colonists. It helped show the tourists what weapons they used to fight, how they had to live and what places were around.

“Boston is filled with historical memories and objects. It would be a peaceful place to live in. The most fun but exhausting time at Boston was the Bunker Hill Memorial. I thought it was fun and the view at top was incredible. In all, Boston was a great place and a nice place to go if you want to know more about our past.”

Pedro Maura also enjoyed taking in the sights of Beantown.

“When we went to Boston, we went to the Bunker Hill Memorial and we walked to the top which was 294 steps,” he said. “We also learned that a lot of people died fighting for us — and also that we got to see were the Boston Massacre was and also how Boston came to be.”

Tysaige Ortega said: “When I was at Boston, I thought the best part was when we went up the 294-step staircase at Bunker Hill.”

And last, but not least, Danica Carr said she had a blast in Boston.

“When I was in Boston, I had a wonderful time,” she said. “It was my first time going to Boston so it was nice to see what it’s like. The first thing that we did when we got to Boston was climb the Bunker Hill Monument that

had 294 stairs. That was a pretty fun experience to do.

“We visited many cemeteries, monuments and historical events. We also had many scavenger hunts on who could find the narrowest house or Tomas

Belleville man gets 10 behind bars in vehicular homicide A 27-YEAR-OLD BELLEVILLE MAN will spend the next 10 years of his life behind bars after he pleaded guilty to a single count of vehicular manslaughter and one count of causing serious bodily injury, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II announced last week.

Anthony Casale, 27, of Belleville was sentenced to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison for striking and killing Megan E. Villanella, 34, of

Verona and critically injuring her brother in a crash a little more than 2 years ago.

According to Stephens, at approximately 7:45 a.m., March 3, 2017, Villanella, who had a 2-year-old daughter and was 7 months pregnant, was standing at a bus stop in Verona.

The brother and sister were waiting for a bus to take them from Verona to New York City, where both worked.

Casale, Stephens said, jumped the curb and hit the

two, killing Villanella and seriously injuring her brother.

On Jan. 25 of this year, Casale entered a guilty plea to the aforementioned charges, Assistant Prosecutor Brian Pollock, who handled the case, said.

On Friday, April 12, Judge Michael L. Ravin, of the Superior Court, sentenced Casale to 10 years, consistent with the plea agreement.

The victim’s husband, brother, father and mother gave

impassioned victim impact statements at the sentencing.

“The statements from the family make it clear that this was a tremendous loss not only to them but to everyone who knew Megan. She was a remarkable woman who was taken far too soon. No amount of prison time can compensate for their loss, but we hope the resolution of the criminal case will give them some solace,’’ Pollock said.

New procedures for firearms applications in Nutley have been put into place, the NPD said last week in a statement to the press.

The Nutley PD is now a participating agency in the new FARS (Firearms Application & Registration System) online firearms application process.

Applicants may now apply for firearms ID cards and a permit to purchase a handgun online.

Online applications are now being accepted.

Traditional paper applications will also be accepted through April 30.

Step 2 The Nutley PD ORI is: NJ0071600. You will not be able to complete the FARS online application without the proper ORI number.

“I remember my team,” said Mendez, the former Kearny High School great athlete who is now the head baseball coach at Harrison High. “I remember playing for Johnson Communications. I still have my uniform from Tee ball.”

Now 34 years old, Mendez remembers those who helped him along the way.

“I owe a big thank you to the coaches who taught me about sports and about life,” Mendez said. “If not for them, then I would have never existed.”

One of those coaches was Kearny’s resident baseball guru Doug Gogal, who has spent the last 50 years of his life coaching baseball in Kearny, either on the Little League level for years and now currently as Dave Smart’s assistant with the varsity.

Ariana Ruela is another former Kearny High standout athlete, an All-State soccer player who now is the head women’s soccer coach at nearby Rutgers-Newark.

“I loved being a part of Kearny High School soccer,” Ruela said. “I used to eat, bathe and sleep soccer. Some of my fondest memories are of being a part of Kearny High School soccer.”

Mendez, who also played soccer and basketball during his athletic career at Kearny, carved his niche as a great baseball player. As a pitcher, Mendez helped the Kearny Kardinals win the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group IV title in 2003 and a berth in the overall state championship game. He then ended up having a sensational career at Montclair State, where he ended up winning 19 games over his career and pitching to a 4.18 earned run average.

was faced with the toughest decision of his young life last week. However, it was a decision that most college sports enthusiasts could only dream about.

Luzzi-Liggins, the Belleville native and St. Peter’s Prep senior, had narrowed down his college choices to two, namely Clemson and Alabama, which only happened to be the two schools that faced each other in the college football national championship game in January.

Luzzi-Liggins was indeed a football player at the downtown Jersey City private school, but his choice was strictly as one of the top sprinters in track and field in the state.

His track prowess enabled Luzzi-Liggins, who finished second in the 200-meter dash at the NJSIAA’s indoor Meet of Champions in February, to secure a track scholarship with either of the top two college football teams in the land. Not bad at all.

But making the choice was hard.

In fact, his family believed for a brief instant that Luzzi-Liggins was headed to Alabama.

“For a minute there, I thought we were headed

further south,” said Niki Luzzi, Richie Luzzi-Liggins’ mother, who raised Richie and little brother Neko as a single mom.

“Alabama was going hard for him.”

In the end, family tradition won out.

In 1968, Luzzi-Liggins’ grandfather, Rich Luzzi, who was a high school All-American in football at Belleville High, scored a touchdown on the longest play in Clemson’s storied football history. Rich Luzzi returned a missed field goal 108 yards for a score.

It remains the longest scoring play ever at Clemson.

It was that history that played a huge part in what transpired last week, when Luzzi-Liggins signed a national letter of intent to compete in track and field at Clemson University in South Carolina.

“It was a major factor in my decision,” LuzziLiggins said after signing his letter, along with Prep track teammates Liam Christman (Holy Cross) and Gus Nations IV (Xavier). “My grandfather passed away in 2003. I was named after him. I wanted to put my family in the best possible position, the place

Mendez said that it was rewarding to share the night with some of his former teammates and fellow Hall of Fame inductees.

“We all played sports together back then,” Mendez said. “We were true friends together both on and off the field. We all clicked so well. I think we all recognized what it took to be successful.”

“The amazing thing was the standing ovation,” Gogal said. “I was so shocked and humbled by that. I didn’t know what to do. Luckily my wife was recording it, so I can see it, because it was an out of body experience for me. All the people were standing, not

just for me, but for everyone.

I was there to share it with guys I coached with like my boss Jim (Sickinger), Frankie (Bifulco) and Dave (Smart, the current Kearny High baseball coach).”

A few days after the induction, Gogal attended the Opening Day ceremonies at the Kearny Little League facility, going back to the place where Gogal carved his teeth as a coach and remained for over 30 years.

“It was nice to go back and hear from people, saying that I made a positive impression on them,” Gogal said.

Ruela was one of the youngest inductees at age 28, but she’s already made her mark as a collegiate coach.

“I was shocked when I heard I was getting in,” Ruela said. “I didn’t expect it at all. I had some good years in Kearny and had some great teammates. It was nice to be included. I just want to continue to grow upward. It was very rewarding. Being in the room with all these greats really hit home and made me realize I’m doing the right thing coaching and being so heavily involved in the game.

I have so many games that are still vivid in my mind. I do revisit those games every so often. We had an impressive four-year run. All I wanted to do was play soccer. There was a lot of work and dedication involved.”

Much like there was with the other inductees on a great night for all.

“I wanted to play football and baseball,” Luzzi-Liggins said. “It’s crazy how all this happened. I never thought of track. I was always thinking about football.”

But Luzzi-Liggins was convinced to go out for track – and the rest was history, becoming one of the finest sprinters in the country.

And with that came the attention from the big schools like the two best football programs in the land.

“I really was stressing about it for the last three weeks,” Luzzi-Liggins said.

Carolina to visit Clemson.

“It was my last official visit,” Luzzi-Liggins said.

But it wasn’t the only time he visited the school.

“We had been to Clemson so many times,” Niki Luzzi said. “But this time, Clemson was going above and beyond for him.”

However, the official visit almost never happened.

“The plane was cancelled three times,” Niki Luzzi said.

Monday, Luzzi-Liggins visited Clemson as an official recruit. Later that night, as the mother and son boarded the plane back home to New Jersey, Luzzi-Liggins gave his mother the good news.

“When we got to the airport, we talked about a few things,” Luzzi-Liggins said. “I told my Mom that I was going to Clemson.”

Nicosia said that she just loves being a catcher.

“I always feel comfortable behind the plate,” Nicosia said. “I feel like it’s my home. I know that I do my part to protect it like it is my home. I like being involved with every single play. It makes the game even more interesting. It

is my home.”

“I think more people are impressed with the way she carries herself behind the plate, more than they are with her as a hitter,” Cantarella said.

“She’s social with the opposition. She talks to umpires.

She’s very friendly with everyone. Her defense really stands out.”

Nicosia likes the relationship she enjoys with her head coach.

“It’s definitely been a lot of fun,” Nicosia said. “I’m having a great opportunity to enjoy my senior year. It’s so exciting.”

Nicosia said that it meant a lot to her to secure the 100th hit of her career, a milestone that very few players can achieve during their high school days.

Nicosia got the 100th hit April 6 against West Orange.

“Coach Cantarella kept reminding me that I was close,” Nicosia said. “Everyone had posters made for me. It was such a thrill.”

It was also a big moment when Nicosia decided to attend Springfield College in Massachusetts beginning in the fall.

“It just felt like home,” Nicosia said. “I took a visit and said that I could see myself playing here for the next four years. It was a nice connection for me.

I liked the fact that I was going someplace fresh and new.”

Just like home, where Nicosia has always belonged.

“Pinhole” glasses have been the topic of much discussion lately. These glasses have opaque plastic lenses that are studded with grids of tiny holes.

Some say they improve eyesight by bringing nearby and faraway objects into better focus. Purportedly, looking through the pinholes exercises the “ciliary muscles,” which control the shape of the eye lens. The claim is that the eyes regain their proper focusing ability, leading to permanent sight improvements. More than a century ago, American ophthalmologist William Bates was the first to suggest that exercising the eye muscles can have a lasting effect. The debate goes on as we continue to study the value of

glasses that work much in the same way that squinting does.

Pinhole glasses are mainly used by eye care specialists as a diagnostic tool. Many eye doctors use an occluder, an instrument that covers one of your eyes while reading the eye chart. On one end, the occluder is solid but on the other end, the occluder has many tiny pinholes.

Eduarda “Chana” Pireta de Uribe died peacefully at home in Kearny on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 surrounded by her family.

She was 92.

She was born in Lima, Peru, on Aug. 23, 1926 and was the last surviving member of the Pireta Sarco family. She immigrated to the United States in 1982 where she dedicated herself to caring for her family and ensuring she instilled strong family values.

Despite their sacrifice, despite their courage, despite their contribution to one of America’s landmark achievements, they were relegated to second-class (if that) status. Having finished their task, they were left on the West Coast to eke out a living under a cloud of racial and cultural discrimination.

But some found hope.

Here, in Belleville.

Perrone explained that two businesses — the Passaic Steam Laundry, the largest commercial laundry in the country, owned by James Hervey and located near where the Arlington Diner is now, and a smaller laundry on the Belleville side of the Passaic River and operated by retired Civil War Major William Blewett — were eager to employ the laid-off workers.

In September 1870, 68 Chinese men and boys recruited from California and ranging in age from 13 to 32, arrived in Belleville, which was to become the home to the first Chinese immigrant community in the eastern U.S. (Manhattan’s more famous Chinatown came later.)

The Chinese established families and settled throughout the town.

Some even worshipped at the Dutch Reformed Church and are buried in the basement — alas, in unmarked graves. (But they are remembered at the annual Chinese Memorial Day ceremony.)

In Perrone’s words, “For almost 20 years, Belleville was a relatively peaceful oasis for the Chinese

who were shunned and severely discriminated against throughout most of the country.”

Eventually, they moved on to Newark, which had its own Chinatown from the 1890s until the 1960s — and at one time, it was bigger than Manhattan’s.

“Now,” said Perrone, “there’s not one building left.”

But there are memories. And continuing respect for those who have gone before us. It was this cherished Chinese tradition of honoring one’s ancestors that was most evident at the recent Belleville ceremony.

Margaret Lam, founder and chairwoman of the United Chinese American Association of New Jersey (which funded the new memorial), was among the speakers, and she commented that a primary reason for her group “is to remember and honor our ancestors — and everybody else’s ancestors.”

She even noted that all in attendance were invited to wear nametags. “Why? Because I want them (the deceased being honored that day) to know who you are so you can get their blessings.”

“We all came here from somewhere else,” she said. “But the world is one world.”

Then all those in attendance, including the Chinese consul general, were each given a flower. They approached the new memorial singly or in twos or threes, bowed three times and placed the blossoms on the stone. It was a thing of beauty to begin with. It became a marvelous symbol of faith and eternal remembrance.

Residents suffer as a result of noxious odors from the landfill’s trash, affecting our health & quality of life.

This is a public health & environmental emergency!

It’s close to residences, schools and rec fields!”

Editor’s Note: Residents are invited to a peaceful protest at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, April 27.

Participants will gather first at the town DPW yard on Bergen Avenue, where there is parking, and then march to the entrance of the landfill, also on Bergen Avenue.

The protest will take place on town land — and will not seek to interrupt traffic. Also, don’t forget to sign the petition demanding the closure of the landfill.
