priests of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark credibly accused of improper sexual activity against minors from at least 1940 on includes 12 men who once served at either a parish or entity in The Observer’s readership area.

The archdiocese — and Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, the archbishop of Newark — as well as the other dioceses of New Jersey — released the names on Wednesday, Feb. 13, via a news release and a new website at healing.rcan.org.

Tobin offered a contrite tone in releasing the names, many of whom had already been released by Bishop Accountability, an organization unaffiliated with any diocese that keeps track of priests accused.

When your carbon monoxide detector goes off, pay attention to it

Listen and act fast when your carbon monoxide detector sounds its alarm. Most of the time, it’s not malfunctioning — instead, it’s trying to save your life. This was a lesson recently learned by an emergency medicine resident (doctor-in-training) rotating at the state’s poison control center.

RECENTLY, THE OBSERVER RAN A STORY about free CO detectors being distributed to those in need in Kearny. And now, the state is warning residents to pay attention to those detectors because they rarely malfunction.

During teaching rounds, the resident said her carbon monoxide detector had been going off, provoking further discussion of the dangers of CO exposure and the importance of detectors. The information she learned that morning would potentially save the lives of multiple families in her apartment building:

FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS, THERE

was just about one thing — going to church notwithstanding — that locals could count on each and every Sunday … and that was hearing the voice of X.Ray Burns (that’s not a typo — he spelled it X.Ray — and we’re told he was a stickler for people spelling it the right way) on the radio alongside his longtime friend Glen Jones.

Sunday afternoon radio will never be the same again — nor will this world — because Burns, whose real name was Kenneth Green and who lived his entire life in Kearny, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019, at Villa Marie Claire in Saddle River following a bout with cancer.

He was just 57.

If you’re surprised to only now be learning he had cancer — don’t be. Burns kept his diagnosis close to the heart and didn’t share it with

many. In fact, around the time he died, Jones was on the air — doing his show solo — announcing that X.Ray was in the fight for his life with cancer for the very first time.

Though he had missed a few shows, few actually knew why.

And, of course, little did Jones know that just a few minutes after he announced X.Ray’s cancer diagnosis,

he’d be announcing his friend since 1980 had just died.

“Five minutes before the first mic break — I told you he wasn’t listening — X.Ray Burns, Ken Green, passed away,” Jones said live on the air, clearly fighting back tears of sadness over the loss of his friend.

“This is not a joke. I know it’s like a professional wrestling show this program sometimes in that when Burns is filling in for me or viceversa, we say things like, ‘Glen Jones is dead,’ and stuff. But this is very real.”

It was almost as if it all happened according to plan. Burns always said he wanted to go whilst on the air.

And while he wasn’t literally on the air, he was, in spirit, that day — as the masses learned of his diagnosis.

He held on long enough that his time of death coincided with the noon to 3 p.m. timeslot the show had for the longest time.

A little about X.Ray

He was born in Kearny and was a lifelong resident. He was a real estate appraiser for Paradise Appraisals in West Caldwell for the last 20 years.

Prior to that, he worked for Ebert Appraisal Company in Cedar Grove for 10 years.

He was also one of a rare breed — a Republican who lived in Kearny and Hudson County.

Under the moniker “X.Ray Burns,” he joined the WFMU, 91.1 FM air staff in 1986 as cohost with Glen Jones. He also did the program solo when Glen was on assignment.

Together, Jones and Green broadcast from locations along the Jersey Shore, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, New York’s Museum of Television and Radio and in Jersey City (the studios proper), where they hosted an annual “Kill the Holidays Party,” with revelers posing with Green, who would dress up as “Santa Clown,” rich with makeup inspired by his favorite band, “The Insane Clown Posse.”

Fans and friends alike took to social media last week to offer tributes to their late friend once word of his death began to spread.

“At a loss. I wish I could thank Ken Green now for the countless, countless Sundays I spent in his ace company over these 23 years of listening. All love, too, to our Jonesy — may he always be the last man standing,” listener Gordon wrote.

Said listener Stuart:

“Sundays on FMU has been my lifeline to my previous NY/NJ life. So I log in today to listen, see the GoFundMe campaign, and then hear that X.Ray has passed. If only we had known the real situation for the last few weeks, he could have known that the campaign had earned its goal while he was still around. Godspeed you crazy bastard.”

Others posted tributes to Ken’s obituary tribute wall on Thiele Reid’s website.

Herb Gimbel, a retired deacon at St. Stephen’s Church, Kearny, wrote: “Ken was a husband, a brother, a son, an uncle, a friend and a neighbor. He will be remembered so fondly by all of us. His smile will be unforgettable, his laughter will be unforgettable and Ken will be unforgettable.”

Christine Henneken wrote: “My deepest condolences to Sharon and Agnes, family and friends. I will forever remember Ken as the guy who looked out for the underdog.

He had a heart of gold and a soul to match. When he found me on Facebook several years ago, he was quick to offer kind words when remembering the girl he knew in KHS. Classy, always classy. Nobody ever described me in that way. It touched me deeply. I shall remember those words always.

RIP Ken. Until we meet again.”

Yours truly knew him more as Ken Green from his frequent visits to the former Sunset Deli on Kearny Avenue, where I worked, part-time, from 1997 to 1999.

We’d always talk politics and though we rarely agreed on,

well, anything, we always parted ways with laughter and a handshake knowing there were absolutely no hard feelings.

After I moved to Florida in 2012, we reconnected via social media after nearly a decade of having no contact at all. It was as though not a day had passed in-between. And though I only got to see him one time following my 2016 return to Kearny — we bumped into each other at Foodtown, North Arlington, of all places — that short 10-minute encounter still

remains one of the highlights of my last three years.

There was a wake for X.Ray last week at the Thiele Reid Funeral Home, Kearny. His funeral was private — because if it hadn’t been for family only, there likely would have been too many people there from all over the tri-state area — and not enough room to seat them all at the Thiele Reid Funeral Home. He truly had legions of fans who will always remember him.

Ken/X.Ray is survived by his wife, Sharon (nee

Romansky) Green; his mother, Agnes (nee Smith) Green Shaffery and her husband, Raymond; one sister, Deborah Green and one brother, Richard Green. He was the brother-in-law of Brian and Tina Romansky and uncle of Cameron Green and Sabrina and Eric Romansky. He also leaves his mother-inlaw Lorraine (nee Stern) Romansky and her husband, Wayne. W.H.A.T. putting on Belleville author’s play

WHEN ALLYSSA HYNES IS NOT writing for work, she finds herself writing for fun.

“It feels really cool to see my creations come to life in the theater,” says the Belleville resident who as far as she remembers always had an interest in writing.

Hynes grew up in South Jersey, graduated Egg Harbor Township High School and went to Montclair State University for theater studies and psychology. However, she recalls that it was in first-grade when she started writing

plays for enjoyment and got involved in the theater scene ever since.

“I was pretty young when I moved toward wanting to write then just doing something for fun,” she says. “Egg Harbor Township High School also gave me a nice opportunity to write for the theater.

That’s when I started doing things more seriously.”

After attending Northwestern University for grad school, Hynes came back to New Jersey to put into practice her skills, creativity and artistic ability in the community.

Her latest work, “Unlucky Clovers,” is a story of clues

and hints in which the spectator must apply the five senses to follow up with the chain of events. In this script, Old Man Clover’s lucky charm has been stolen on his birthday and he thinks it’s someone in the family. The grumpy old man threatens to reveal family secrets as retaliation, but there is someone in the room who doesn’t want these secrets revealed.

This is when the party takes a murderous turn.

“There are a lot of hidden themes and messages — everyone is not exactly what they seem,” Hynes says. “There is also a good portion of the show

where the actors interact with the guests about who they think the killer is. It is very exciting.”

For Hynes, this is a very hands-on project since she is also directing it and she says it’s is a pleasure to work with people who share the same passion.

“It is a great feeling to see this exceptional cast bring the characters to life. The theater group is also very supportive, they love theater and are also very involved so it’s been great to be a part of that,” she says.

Besides being a ghost writer for a cozy mystery series, Hynes is also the designer for an escape room in South Jersey that her father runs.

The place is called Room for Escape at the Hamilton Mall.

“The business has been a little crazy,” she says. “We moved locations so now we are in a mall. We used to have just hour rooms but when we moved to the mall, we actually added 15-minute rooms that are shorter games for the people who just want to come in while they are shopping.”

According to Hynes, you don’t have to be an expert in clues and puzzles in order to beat the game, it just requires concentration and a good game master (the person who gives you the hints) “The experience is a lot of fun,” she says. “We do have some cool themes, so you have a good time while you are trying to figure out what is going on.”

Hynes is also a big fan of Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets: “He created his own world and it’s magical,” she says. “I am obviously not doing the same thing at all — but he is amazing. On my free, time I am involved in community theater in different aspects, but for fun, I also like going to trivia night.”

“Unlucky Clovers” is hosted by the West Hudson Arts and Theater Company (W.H.A.T) and takes place at the American Legion Post 99, Kearny, 314 Belgrove Drive, Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2.

KPD: Theft wasn’t the ‘sole’ charge

ON FEB. 9 AT 10:45 P.M.,

Kearny Police Officers Anthony Oliveira, Josh Lopez and Sergio Nobre responded to a basement apartment on the 300 block of Chestnut Street on a report of a burglary.

The tenant told them she had just returned home to find her door unlocked and a box of jewelry, eight or nine pairs of sneakers, purses, watches, makeup and cash missing from the residence. Police said the victim also stated that, over the last several months, she had discovered other items missing, but she did not report these.

The officers noted signs of forced entry, and Det. Neil Nelson came to the home to take up the investigation.

Parked in the driveway, police said, he saw a Honda Civic with sneaker boxes on the back seat and the victim confirmed these were from her stolen footwear.

Police said the Civic belonged to the landlord’s son, John C. Ramirez, 23, of Kearny. Subsequent to an interview with the detective, he was charged with burglary, conspiracy and theft and was sent to the Hudson County Jail.

Feb. 6

At 6:20 p.m., Officers Jason Rodrigues, Andre Fernandes and Sean Podolski responded to a report of a dispute at a truck-repair business on

the Belleville Pike. There, police said, a 24-year-old Robbinsville man stated he had an argument with the shop owner about the time required to repair his trailer and that during the dispute the owner, Robel Perez, 46, of Belleville, struck him — twice — with a truck.

After officers reviewed video of the incident, Perez was arrested and charged on a summons with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon (the truck) and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Police said the victim refused medical aid from EMS.

Feb. 7

A Toms River man — John Devlin, 68 — was driving on Forest Street near Laurel Avenue at 3:05 p.m. when, police said, he drove his Hyundai into the back of another vehicle that was stopped in traffic. Luckily, neither driver was hurt.

Unluckily, the other vehicle was a KPD SUV, operated by Officer Vanessa Sevillano.

Police said Officer Peter Jahera arrived to investigate “and realized something was amiss when Devlin handed him a debit card and insisted it was a driver’s license.”

Devlin was then run through a battery of field-sobriety tests, which he reportedly did not pass and thus was charged with DWI and careless driving and was later released to a relative. (Can you use a debit card to pay a fine?)

were called to the 7-11 on the Belleville Pike on a report of a man harassing customers in the store. Williams arrived first and was told that the man had just pulled onto Schuyler Avenue in a Mini Cooper, which Rodrigues then saw and stopped at Seeley Avenue and Devon Street.

Driver Kevin Jones, 35, of Hillside, reportedly stated that he was homeless and had simply been asking customers for a cigarette. Police said Jones was found to be wanted

by Woodbridge ($2,500 bail) and Irvington ($750 bail) for traffic violations and that a search incident to arrest revealed a glass pipe inside his long underwear, resulting in a summons for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jones was later turned over to Woodbridge police to answer for their warrant.

Pena-Lastra was charged on summonses with possession of Ecstasy, pot and paraphernalia, and seven traffic violations.

Other aspects of the case remain under investigation.

Feb. 11

Officers Dave Bush and Jonathan Dowie responded to the North Arlington PD at 10:30 p.m. to take custody of Madelene Mauleon, 38, of Kearny, who had been arrested by the NAPD on Kearny warrants of $5,000 and $1,000. These charged cyber-harassment, stemming “from incidents over many prior months” in which Mauleon was alleged to have made harassing electronic statements to and/or about a 17-year-old Kearny boy. Police said the parents of the teen (who was apparently a friend of the accused’s daughter) reported the incidents.

Gontarczuk saw a doubleparked Ford Explorer causing a traffic bottleneck near the Midland Avenue charter school — and then observed a young child enter the SUV as he was directing the driver to move it.

After learning that the owner’s license was suspended and her registration was expired, police said, the detective pulled the vehicle over in a safer area and, upon approaching, realized that driver Gabriela Pena-Lastra, 32, of Kearny, was smoking marijuana — with the child present.

For the benefit of the child, Gontarczuk arranged for a relative to pick the youngster up before placing PenaLastra under arrest. A search of the SUV allegedly yielded one bag of crushed Ecstasy, one prescription bottle of marijuana and eight partially burnt marijuana

Gov. Murphy: Close Keegan now and forever THE NUMBERS ARE STAGGERING.

Kearny Mayor Alberto Santos, in a video posted to social media recently, visited the Keegan Landfill off Bergen Avenue and announced some readings of hydrogen sulfide taken from the dump on a single day.

An acceptable reading is 30 parts per billion (ppb).

The actual readings varied from 82 ppb to a whopping 248 ppb. These numbers are obscene.

The hydrogen sulfide not only emits a horrendous odor — you’ve probably all grown to just love that egg smell — but it also affects the health of residents. Santos noted in the video that it’s possible those with respiratory issues, including asthma, could be negatively affected by these unconscionable readings.

In fact, we know of several people whose breathing issues have been notably bad of late — and now we can’t help but wonder whether it’s the Keegan Landfill that is causing this adverse effect.

With readings as high at 248 ppb — more than 8 times the maximum accept-

EDITORIAL able — it is becoming more and more clear that the Town of Kearny, and surrounding towns, may very well have more than just an odor problem.

This could very well be a health crisis.

And what has the State of New Jersey done to exacerbate the issue?

Absolutely nothing!

Years ago, the state promised a new recreational facility on what is now the Keegan Landfill. Given what’s going on there now, it’s hard to fathom a rec facility there. (That’s a discussion for another day.) And it also begs the question — how many other sites that are unsound environmentally have been built on across the state?

We’d love to know the answer.

But the idea here is that once again, the state continues to dump on Kearny, both figuratively and literally, and lied when it said it would close the dump and replace it with something positive for the community.

We’re tired of this.

We’ve seen enough.

And we take this time to affirm the remarks of the mayor when he demanded the state close Keegan until a time when it can be certain it knows why the hydrogen sulfide readings are as bad as they are — and until it can come up with a solution to fix the readings and eliminate the odors that have caused such a great quality-of-life issue … and perhaps health issues … for residents.

We’ll also take it one step further — Gov. Phil Murphy, close the Keegan Landfill once and for all.

Reverse the lies created by previous administrations.

For once, do the right thing for the people of Kearny and rid us of this decades-old nuisance.

Enough with the rhetoric.

Enough with the lack of concern from the NJDEP. The people here deserve so much better. We’ve been dumped on for far too long.

It must end, once and for all. Now. We’ll be watching. We’ll be waiting.

No other solution will suffice.

Amoroso inspires great success for the coming year

Realty’s Michael Amoroso may just be one of the most well educated broker associates in all of New Jersey. And it’s not that he’s showing off at all. He’s a very humble man in reality. Yet for most of 2018, he took a series of courses that will allow him to impact the community and use that education to train other realtors — and to continue to inspire those who work for him.

To say he did a lot the past year would be an understatement.

He decided, early on in 2018, that he wanted to put a greater emphasis on educational goals. So for starters, he obtained his New Jersey Realtors’ Instructors License. He qualified for the license because he successfully met the NJ Real Estate Commission’s state requirements.

WITH ALL DUE RESPECT TO THOSE WHO love wolves — if I encounter one in the wilderness (I’d likely be out west — there aren’t any here in Jersey) — I am probably freezing and heading in the opposite direction.

Fast.

And yet on Friday, Feb. 15, there she was, all 100 pounds of him, sitting at attention on the stage at Lincoln Middle School’s auditorium. Jessica McMasters, a long-time science teacher at the school, was petting Tecomah as if she were the family canine she’d known forever.

Elaine McCarthy, also a science teacher at the school, then took her turn petting him.

Teacher after teacher did the same before the assembly kicked off. And Tecomah didn’t attack anyone. Not half. Instead, she would take her turn licking the faces of those who showed her love. This timber wolf may have been the most well-behaved canine you’ll ever see.

Because of her urging and quick action, the CO leak was quickly rectified and no one was harmed.

Carbon monoxide poisoning is an immediate and deadly danger no matter the season. Don’t be the poison center’s next statistic.

“Prevention and early detection are crucial in preventing poisoning injury and death from carbon monoxide,” said Dr. Diane Calello, executive and medical director at the NJ Poison Control Center at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School’s Department of Emergency Medicine.

“Heating systems, fireplaces and any other gas, oil or coalburning appliances should be serviced by a professional every year to ensure all are working and venting properly to prevent CO exposure.”

Carbon monoxide is known as the “silent killer” because it’s a gas that gives no warning — you can’t see it, smell it or taste it. Exposure to CO can produce headaches, sleepiness, fatigue, confusion and irritability at low levels.

At higher levels, it can result in nausea, vomiting, an irregular heartbeat, impaired vision and coordination and death.

During cold and flu season, symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can easily mirror symptoms of such illnesses. CO poisoning is serious and should be handled forthwith as a medical emergency.

“You want to catch a leak before it turns into a serious problem,” Calello said. “Don’t gamble with your family’s health and well-being. CO detectors are a must.”

Battery-operated carbon monoxide detectors should be put on every level of a home or apartment — and near every sleeping area.

Always check the batteries of CO and fire detectors when changing clocks twice a year for daylight saving time.

“When the alarm on your carbon monoxide detector sounds, take it seriously. Get outside immediately and call for help,” Calello said.

Meanwhile, Calello offers key CO safety tips that will save lives: • If you don’t have carbon monoxide detectors, install them right away. If your detectors are old and/or not

Have chimneys inspected periodically to prevent blockage.

• Never use a stove to heat your home.

• Only use generators outside. Keep them more than 20 feet from both you and your neighbor’s home, doors and windows.

• Do not bring generators, pressure washers, grills, camp stoves or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal-burning devices inside your home, basement, garage, carport, camper, boat cabin or tent — or even outside near an open window or door.

• Do not cook with charcoal indoors — ever.

• Do not idle a car in a closed garage. Once you pull in, immediately turn off the engine. Be extra careful with “remote start” engines which may be on without your knowledge.

If you suspect a carbon monoxide exposure, take immediate action: • If someone is unconscious or unresponsive, get the person out of the house and

call 9-1-1 immediately.

• Exit the house/building immediately. Do not waste time opening windows. This will delay your escape and cause you to breathe in even more dangerous fumes.

• Contact your local fire department/energy provider.

• Call the NJ Poison Control Center at 800-222-1222 for immediate medical-treatment advice. Do not waste time looking for information on the Internet about carbon monoxide poisoning.

Kearny PD creating ‘Community Video Partnership’ Unless you have been living somewhere completely off the grid, you know that these days security cameras are ubiquitous. They seem to be inside and outside just about every business and, increasingly, on private residences.

Rather than thinking of them as an invasion of privacy (there’s no expectation of privacy in a public place), consider how important they have become in protecting you.

Watch the news and you’ll hear about some crime being solved, some car or suspect being tracked and/or found because an image was caught on camera. Missing persons have also been located and brought safely home.

For some time now, when a crime is committed, law enforcement agencies have scoured the area around the scene to see if there are any cameras on nearby buildings.

Then they contact the homeowner or business for permission to view their videos.

Now, the Kearny Police Department is seeking pro-active cooperation with the citizenry in this invaluable aspect of public protection.

Under the just launched KPD Community Video Partnership, “residents and business owners whose video cameras view a public area in town (e.g. sidewalks, streets,

parking lots) can register their cameras with the department.”

Note: It’s a strictly confidential partnership that “will allow a detective to contact you quickly if your cameras may have captured evidence of a crime.”

The police emphasize that “signing up for this registry does not give the KPD automatic access to your surveillance cameras. The KPD is only interested in cameras that point at areas in public view. The registry is only for use by the Kearny Police Detective Bureau to be able to quickly identify evidence of a crime and will not be available to the public.”

Capt. Timothy Wagner added that registering will not “give us direct or remote access” to the cameras. This will be “strictly a confidential database” kept at the KPD and providing the camera locations and contact information for their owners.

PARDON TONY CARRATURA, JR. if he doesn’t have his finger on the pulse of the history of the Kearny High School wrestling program.

The resident historian, namely Carratura’s father, Tony, Sr., passed away almost three years ago, taking his wealth of knowledge – especially the history of the program – with him.

But the younger Carratura knows one thing for sure. It has been a very long time since Kearny enjoyed a day in the NJSIAA District tournament than the one the Kardinals had at the District 11 get-together in Morristown last weekend.

Carratura’s Kardinals finished second to Mendham

in the team standings. That alone is a feat worth noting.

The Kardinals almost captured the team title, falling to heavily favored state power Mendham by just two-and-ahalf points, 192.5 to 190.

But Carratura’s team captured three gold medals.

Sophomore Jacob Baeza, junior Kyle Ostanski and junior Matthew Mauricio all won their respective weight classes. It was the first time in recent memory that the Kardinals crowned three district champions.

But the Kardinals also had four wrestlers finish second and three more place third, which meant that an incredible total of 10 wrestlers are moving on to the Region 3 tournament at West Orange High School this weekend.

Can you fathom that idea?

Kearny will have a full practice of region wrestlers in practice this week. They won’t have to farm themselves out to other programs just to get a competitive workout. It can happen in their own backyard.

“When it was over, all the coaches were all asking, ‘When was the last time we sent 10 to the Regions?’”

Carratura asked. “We really didn’t know. It might not have ever happened. That’s a testament to the program, to everyone involved, the parents, the volunteer coaches.

We all came together and this is the result. It’s proof that we’re moving in the right direction. We have a great group of kids who are finally

basketball season didn’t exactly start as planned for the Maroon Raiders of Nutley High School.

There were the five straight losses to begin the season. That steamrolled into 10 losses in the first 12 games.

Could the Maroon Raiders actually be 2-10? With the talented roster they possessed? Something was way wrong there.

“You start to doubt what you’re doing,” veteran head coach Bob Harbison said. “It was hard to recognize the problem. It was just so frustrating.”

It was a team that was packed with seniors. There was good leadership from players like Marty Higgins and Jordan Swann. There was solid interior play from solid athletes like Eli Acosta and Jason Nazaruk.

The pieces were all there.

Still, Nutley had a 2-10 record. And teams with records like that tend to fold up shop and play out the string.

“To the kids’ credit, they didn’t pack it in,” Harbison said. “They just started to realize that they might be able to do some things.

Two things happened. The schedule got lighter and the kids played harder.”

turned on a switch and the Maroon Raiders started to play like they were supposed to be playing.

Higgins, the baseball standout who has already signed on to play baseball at St. John’s University in the fall, scored the 1,000th point of his career early in the season. That took some of the pressure off Higgins and allowed him to enjoy the sport with his father, Marty, Sr., the all-time leading scorer in boys’ basketball at the school, as an assistant coach.

“Marty started knocking down shots,” Harbison said. “We’re a different team when he’s making his shots.”

Higgins has enjoyed 15 straight games of scoring in double figures. Included in that run is a four-game stretch where he scored 25 against Shabazz, 26 against Glen Ridge, 27 against West Orange and 25 in the Essex County Tournament quarterfinals against powerhouse Irvington.

Higgins is now averaging 18.8 points per game on the season and has tallied 1,259 points. He’s not going to challenge Dad for the all-time scoring lead, but getting past 1,300 isn’t too shabby for a baseball

Let’s start with district champ Baeza, who took home the gold medal in the 120-pound weight class. Baeza won via a thrilling 3-2 decision over Chris Tringali of Mendham.

“He trailed early, 2-0, but then got an escape point and took the kid down with five seconds left to win it,” Carratura said of Baeza. “He had the crowd on their feet. I’m so happy for the kid. He works hard.”

Baeza improved to 25-2 on the season and incredibly has 52 wins for his career and counting. He is well on his way to becoming a 100-win wrestler barring an injury or other setback.

Ostanski overcame a head butt and gash over his eye to defeat Kurtis Boyd of Morris Catholic by a 7-3 decision in the 138-pound title bout.

ran out,” Carratura said of Ostanski, who had a 10-13 record last year as a sophomore, but has improved to 21-6 this year as a junior. “He had a great tournament.”

The third District 11 champ is 195-pound junior Matthew Mauricio, who earned his district gold medal by defeating Matthew Bremmer of Hackettstown in the title bout by a 3-1 decision. Mauricio is another vastly improved Kearny wrestler, having gone from 8-11 last year to a 15-5 District 11 champ this season.

“It’s his first full varsity season,” Carratura said of Mauricio, whose twin brother, Andrew, was the runner-up at 220 pounds, also moving on to the Region 3 tourney. “It was great to see them all put in the hard work and Matthew winning the District (11) title is proof that hard work pays off.

Ramandan almost came away with the championship, but dropped a heartbreaking 9-8 decision to Alejandro Castro of Hackettstown. It’s only the second year of varsity wrestling for Ramandan, who was 16-15 last year, but has a 16-6 record this season.

season, yet somehow made it back to wrestle in the District 11 tourney. Witt lost in the quarterfinals, ending his bid for a miraculous run.

“He just wants to win,” Carratura said. “He had it in his head that he was going to win.

We are all awed by Travis and what he’s been able to do. He gave it his all. I’m very proud of him. The opposing coaches all said that they had nothing but respect for him. To see him out there again was truly a special thing.”

So needless to say, this was a special weekend for Kearny wrestling. There was only one downside. The architect of the whole thing, the resident historian, the coach and mentor to all, wasn’t there to enjoy the moment with everyone else.

“That’s the only bad thing,” Carratura, Jr. said about missing his father. “All of the kids here came from my Dad’s hard work. I think there was a little bit of my Dad in every one of these kids. We’re all a family. I kind of had a feeling that it was going to be a special weekend. I had a good feeling about these guys. It was a great weekend.”

“We did have some games early on that we should have won,” Harbison said. “Other kids started to accept their roles and just played harder.

But they just played harder.

I know that sounds stupid, but that’s what it was. It was tough to handle. We just got better defensively and started putting the ball in the basket.”

But it’s not hard to handle any longer. The Maroon Raid-

ers are perhaps Essex County’s hottest team, having won eight of their last 10 games to get to a more respectable 10-12.

There’s only one problem with that record. The Maroon Raiders failed to qualify for the upcoming NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group III playoffs like they always do.

If the Maroon Raiders were in the state playoffs, they might have done some damage.

But now, they have games this week against Bloomfield, Morris Hills and Livingston, all on the road. There’s a postponed game against Irvington that could be made up, but that has not been determined as of yet.

So the Maroon Raiders are resigned to playing out the string. It was a season that could have been that just started a little too late.

“I can’t say that this season has not been enjoyable,” Harbison said. “We made a nice little run there. The kids all picked their heads up and started to play better. It is frustrating, because it would have been interesting to see what we could have done in the states.”

Charles Dickens wrote it perfectly in “A Tale of Two Cities.” It could be used for the Nutley boys’ basketball team as a tale of two seasons.

Senior forward Eli Acosta has been one of the biggest reasons why the Nutley boys’ basketball team went from being a dismal 2-10 to a more respectable 10-12 this season with four games to go.

Another key to the Maroon Raiders’ solid play of late is senior forward Acosta, who has played like a man possessed in the second half of the season. Already committed to play football at Rowan University, Acosta started to establish himself as a dominating force when February kicked in.

Acosta had 20 points against Shabazz and tossed in a career-best 30 points against West Orange. During a six-game span, Acosta averaged 17.8 points and 10

Swann has only reached double figures in scoring once over the last six games, but that’s fine with Harbison.

“We’re a much better team when he’s doing a better job distributing the ball rather than scoring,” Harbison said.

“Swann has become more of a distributor than a scorer.

Since his scoring has gone down, we’re playing better.”

Swann is still averaging 10.3 points per game, but Harbison likes the true point guard play from Swann as opposed to the scorer.

IT WAS ALMOST PREDESTINED. Eventually, the day would come where Dylan Weaver would be wrestling for his father Scot at Queen of Peace High School, a place where the elder Weaver went out of his way and raised the money to build a wrestling room in the tiny school.

As far back as young Dylan could remember, he was going to be a wrestler for his legendary father, who coached at places like Lyndhurst, St. Mary’s of Rutherford, Brearley Regional in Kenilworth and then Queen of Peace (twice).

Scot Weaver carved out a fantastic reputation as one of the finest high school wrestling coaches in New Jersey – heck,

even the nation.

Kids would travel far and wide to have the opportunity to be tutored by Weaver, so why wouldn’t his son benefit from his father’s immense knowledge?

“It was always part of the plan,” Dylan Weaver said. “I always wanted to wrestle for my Dad. I was really looking forward to that.”

“When I coached at St. Mary’s and Dylan was old enough to sit up, he was used to everything,” Scot Weaver said. “When he was old enough to walk, he’d go right over and sit on the bench. He was running around our house with head gear and wrestling shoes on as an infant.”

And when Dylan became old enough to wrestle, like perhaps three or four years old, he was learning from the best that New Jersey had to offer in former state champions Damian Logan and Erik Norgaard, who both won state crowns during their schoolboy days at St. Joseph Regional in Montvale. Logan, who was recently named the athletic director at the school, won three state titles, while Norgaard won once.

“Both had a hand in Dylan’s development,” Scot Weaver said. “It all transcended into us being together at Queen of Peace. My long-term goal was to develop my sons at Queen of Peace.”

But it wasn’t meant to be.

Queen of Peace shut its doors to the high school forever in 2017, ending all opportunity for a father and son tandem there.

“When Queen of Peace closed, it was horrible,” Scot Weaver said. “I was resigned to the fact that it just wasn’t going to happen. I just assumed that I would be a parent, that I would sit back and watch him wrestle. I was ready to let go of the dream.

As long as we were together, I could handle being a parent.”

“I felt like it wasn’t going to happen,” Dylan Weaver said.

“I didn’t think he was going to coach anywhere. I was a little disappointed. I was hoping that he would get a job somewhere.”

S P O R T S & R E C R E AT I O N tle and Scot was a dutiful father, attending the matches and minding his place. Dylan did well at BC, winning 25 matches. He was well on his way to a fine career at the top wrestling program in New Jersey.

However, things changed and opportunities arose.

Joe Collins, the former head coach of the Lyndhurst/ North Arlington wrestling cooperative, decided to resign his duties as a head coach to concentrate on his family. The last-minute coaching opening was just perfect for the elder Weaver, who still resides just a few steps from the front doors of Lyndhurst High.

So Weaver contacted Lyndhurst athletic director Jeff Radigan to inquire about the opening. It was a no-brainer for Radigan to hire Weaver.

“It felt like I had come full circle,” said the elder Weaver, whose first coaching job came at Lyndhurst in the late 1980s.

“Jeff and I had a long relationship. It was the perfect package.”

And with that, Scot Weaver was going to get the chance to coach his son – albeit after the NJSIAA’s 30-day mandatory

waiting period for varsity student/athletes who transfer.

“When I was out for those four weeks, I took it as a time to get better,” said Dylan Weaver.

“It was the best thing for me, because I was going to be with my Dad.” “Finally, it was happening,” Scot Weaver said. “It took a while, but I was finally the coach and not the dad. I was withdrawing myself from it all.”

It almost never happened at all. When Dylan Weaver was 12 years old, he had to undergo open heart surgery, leaving his wrestling career in jeopardy at such an early age.

“Thank God, the surgery was successful,” the elder Weaver said. “There was a time when we were worried whether he would be okay.”

“I was really too young to realize just how dangerous it was,” Dylan Weaver said. “But it was a scary moment for my parents. I think that made me mentally tougher, physically tougher and stronger. I figured if I could get through that, then I could get through anything.”

The sophomore 138-pounder started his season a little late, but was the winner at the

“I felt having the time off helped me,” Dylan Weaver said. “It really boosted my confidence and I just kept going from there.”

“When he hit my hand and went out to the mat, it was surreal,” Scot Weaver said.

“It took a while for it to register, but then the coach in me kicked in. He dominated that tournament. It was really emotional for both of us. It was finally there.”

The younger Weaver has been a standout all season for the Golden Bears, winning 24 of his 25 matches, including three via pins Saturday at the NJSIAA District 10 tournament at Randolph High School.

Weaver won via pin in 54 seconds over Brandon DeOliveira of Cliffside Park in the semifinals, then disposed of Hanover Park’s highly rated Dominick DiFrancescantonio in 2:29 to claim the 138-pound championship.

And for his efforts, Weaver has been selected as The Observer Athlete of the Week for the past week.

“He works with Dylan all the time,” Scot Weaver said of Lospinoso. “He’s on board with everything I’m thinking and Dylan reacts well to what Nick says. Dylan is incredibly fast. He’s very technical. He puts opponents in a bad place.

He also takes the time to study other wrestlers and evaluate them. He’s then trying different things in the practice room.

He’s an excellent on-top wrestler. He’s a pinner from on top.”

The younger Weaver likes the way he’s wrestling these days.

“I think I’m peaking at the right time,” Dylan Weaver said. “I know I have a chance to accomplish my goals.”

And one of those goals would be standing on the podium as a medalist in Atlantic City at the state championships in a few weeks.

“That would be the best thing,” Weaver said. “I think I can get on that podium. I feel like I can do big things.”

And overcoming the obstacle of open heart surgery?

“It made me stronger,” Weaver said. “I’m a stronger person now. I can get through anything.”

For now, Weaver will head to the Region 3 tournament

Richard J. Wiedemann, 89, of Kearny died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Monday, Feb. 11, 2019.

Richard was born in Rutherford and also lived in Harrison and Carteret before moving to Kearny 47 years ago.

Richard’s love was spending time with family, telling jokes and enjoying a Schaefer beer.

Richard was the beloved husband for 70 years to Margaret Ann Wiedemann; devoted father of Eleanor Valle, Richard Wiedemann Jr., Gerald Wiedemann, Ann Pickraum, Linda Fabbricatore and the late Warren Paul Wiedemann; he is also survived by 21 loving grandchildren; 44 cherished great-grandchildren; 18 adoring great-great grandchildren; he is also survived by three sisters and was predeceased by nine brothers.

Visiting was at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Stephen›s Church, Kearny.

Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Helen was an active member of Holy Cross Church in Harrison, where she spent many years. She was a volunteer for the Red Cross and a member of the Harrison Senior Center, with whom she enjoyed traveling and trips to Atlantic City.

Surviving are a son, Michael Puchalik and wife, Laura, of Clarks Summit; two grandchildren, Jason and Avalon; and a great-grandchild, Lylan.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and Tony Yancilla; and a sister, Sophie.

Jean L. (Krout) Haberle, 95, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, formerly of Nutley and Landisville, Pennsylvania, died Feb. 7, 2019, at Hospice and Community Care, Mt. Joy, with her family by her side, following a brief illness.

She was the wife of the late John G. “Jack” Haberle Jr. Jean was born in Newark and was raised in Nutley, a daughter of the late Franklin

W. and Ada C. (Geiple) Krout.

She graduated from Nutley High School and Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg, Virginia, with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition in 1944. Prior to her marriage in 1949, Jean was employed by Hoffmann-La Roche in Nutley and later served on the Board of Visiting Nurse Association of Lancaster. Jean was a former member of Grace Episcopal Church, Nutley, and Zion Lutheran Church, Landisville.

Jean enjoyed traveling the world, life-long learning, theatre and music (especially at Lancaster’s Fulton Theatre), gardening and golf, community volunteering and, most of all, her family and friends.

Jean leaves behind her loving sons, Kenter B. Haberle of New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, and his friend Carol Moore, and Craig E. Haberle and his wife, Kristin Hill Haberle of Lancaster. Jean was predeceased by her sister Ruth K. Briggs.

In keeping with Jean’s wishes, private funeral services and burial in Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Glen Rock, Pennsylvania, will take place at the convenience of her family.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lancaster County Conservancy, Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, Homestead Village or Hospice & Community Care of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

“The list is the result of an extensive review of the archdiocese’s records by an archdiocesan review team and outside legal counsel to identify allegations of sexual abuse of minors by clergy in the archdiocese dating back to 1940. The disclosure of this list of names is not an endpoint in our process — it is a beginning.

“We express genuine sorrow and regret to the victims who put their trust in a member of the church only to have that trust so profoundly betrayed. We must protect our children, first, foremost and always.”

The 12 former clergy who have a connection to The Observer’s readership area include the following. (Please note the specific allegations were not released by the archdiocese, nor were the locations and dates the credible allegations happened. It is not known whether any of the alleged abuse happened here. Also please note — these men served elsewhere, but for the purposes of this story, we’re only including their former local assignments.

1. JOHN X. BERGEUR, who was ordained in 1945, served at St. Anthony’s Parish, East Newark. There was one credible allegation levied against him. He is dead.

2. ROBERT CHABAK, who was ordained in 1972, served at Holy Family Parish, Nutley, and St. Valentine Parish, Bloomfield. There were multiple victims who credibly accused Chabak, who is still alive and who was permanently removed priestly ministry.

3. JOHN J. DONOHUE, ordained in 1973, served as a chaplain at Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville, and St. Valentine Parish, Bloomfield. There were multiple credible victims in his case — and he was permanently removed from priestly ministry.

4. THOMAS F. DUFFY, ordained in 1933, served at Queen of Peace Church, North Arlington. There was one credible allegation levied against him. He is dead.

5. WILLIAM GIBLIN, ordained in 1959, also served at Queen of Peace, NA. Giblin, dead, had one credible allegation levied against him.

6. ROBERT GIBNEY, ordained in 1954, served at St. Cecilia Church, Kearny.

One credible allegation was levied against him. He is dead.

7. ALAN GUGLIELMO, ordained in 1968, served at St. Valentine Church, Bloomfield, Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville, and Sacred Heart Church, Lyndhurst. He was permanently removed from ministry following one credible allegation.

One credible allegation was levied against Mousley, who has since been permanently removed from active ministry.

10. MICHAEL O’BRIEN, ordained in 1977, served at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Kearny, and Mt. Carmel Church, Lyndhurst. O’Brien, who is now dead, had one credible allegation levied against him.

11. EDWARD STANLEY, ordained in 1931, served at Sacred Heart Church, Bloomfield, and also served as the Archdiocesan Director of CYO. One credible allegation was levied against Stanley who is now dead.

12. GERALD SUDOL, ordained in 1980, served at Holy Family Church, Nutley. He had multiple credible allegations levied against him. Sudol has been permanently removed from priestly ministry.

Meanwhile, the list also includes the name of former Newark Archbishop THEODORE E. MCCARRICK, who also served as the cardinalarchbishop of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. McCarrick, who was stripped last year of his faculties as a cardinal, and who was defrocked by Pope Francis just last week, was a frequent visitor to parishes in the area during his tenure here.

As a defrocked former priest, McCarrick is no longer able to celebrate Mass and/or sacraments — and has also been stripped of any and all titles he was once called, including “Father,” “Bishop,” “Archbishop” and, of course, “Cardinal.” He is now referred to as simply Theodore McCarrick, or Mr. McCarrick.

The archdiocese says this list is not final.

Those whose allegations have not yet been adjudicated are not listed yet, but will be if allegations are deemed credible.
