Drop box at KPD HQ is for prescription meds only Story in last week’s Observer inaccurately quoted chief about what could be left in it

A STORY IN LAST WEEK’S

edition of The Observer about a new prescriptionmedication drop box at police headquarters improperly attributed a quote to Kearny Police Chief George King. And it’s important for all residents to know this.

Two weeks ago, the new box was placed in the main lobby at KPD Headquarters, 237 Laurel Ave. In the story, King is quoted — improperly — as saying residents may bring “everything from marijuana to heroin.”

King never said this — and the quoted statement is untrue.

“Project Medicine Drop is a natural addition to our commitment to help improve the public safety and quality of life in the Town of Kearny. It will encourage our residents to be fully aware of the potential for abuse presented by otherwise beneficial medications,” the chief said in a written statement.

Residents may visit the KPD at any time — 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year — to dispose of their unused, expired or excess meds.

Project Medicine Drop is a component of the New Jersey Attorney General’s effort to stop the diversion and abuse of prescription drugs, including highly addictive opiate painkillers.

Through this initiative, the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs installs

secure “prescription drug boxes” at State Police barracks, sheriffs’ offices and municipal police departments throughout the state — including at two military installations and at several college campuses — allowing citizens to safely dispose of their unused, excess or expired prescription medications.

Members of the public are invited to visit the Project Medicine Drop site and drop off any unused prescription medications anonymously. But again, a reminder — this does not include illegal drugs of any kind.

By giving New Jerseyans a safe and secure method to dispose of unneeded medications, Project Medicine Drop helps prevent the abuse of these drugs. This initiative also protects New Jersey’s environment by keeping these drugs out of landfills and out of the water supply.

Donated equipment saving lives in Portugal, Philippines

is a photo of firefighters desperately trying to free the victim of a terrible auto crash in the Philippines.

You will note that one is wearing turn-out gear marked “KFD.” Are Kearny firefighters now responding to calls halfway around the world?

Well, in a symbolic sense, yes.

The turn-out gear was part of a donated-equipment shipment the Kearny Fire Department sent last year to the 13-member Hinigarian Fire Station in the Philippine Province of Negros Occidental.

At the same time, the KFD also donated gear to the 100-member Volunteer Fire Department of Montemoro-Velho in central Portugal.

The other photo shows Dan Neves, KFD Fire Prevention Specialist (3rd from left), on a recent visit to that recipient company.

As we noted in our original Observer story on the donations last spring, four Kearny residents had acted as the chief liaisons between the KFD and aforementioned departments — determining needs, coordinating the donations and helping to arrange for transport. Lynn and Peter

Greb were the contacts for the Philippines; Milu Alves and Maria Helena Neno, for Portugal.

In 2017, KFD had obtained all-new turn-out gear for its members — clothing and equipment that meet new codes and regulations set by the National Fire Protection Association. The retired gear, though, was still more than serviceable.

It would have been a waste, and a shame, to just discard it. Hence the search for, and delivery to, the foreign companies that were more than happy to get it.

Along with the turn-out clothing and boots and helmets, a total of 38 SCBAs (self-contained breathing apparatus) were donated.

While U.S. firefighters can count on state-of-theart emergency gear, there are still places in the world where, as KFD Chief Steve Dyl commented, “Some people might be going into fires with just the shirts on their backs.”

Now, thanks to Kearny generosity and compassion, that will not be the case at the Hinigarian Fire Station or at Montemor-o-Velho, both of which have limited resources and rely primarily on volunteer firefighters.

The Filipino company, one Kearny official had explained, covers “a very densely populated area,”

and the one in Portugal had been faced in 2017 “with the most devastating forest fires in that country’s

history. Thousands of acres burned and there were deaths of both civilians and firefighters.”

Instead of watching TV or reading a magazine to unwind, she’s found an escape in verses and journals.

“Poetry is a secret language between yourself

Lopes’s father suffers from dementia. While there are many ways to care for someone with this illness,

Lopes believes love and compassion have the greatest impact on her father’s health. Although caring for her father is her priority, she still tries, or rather, forces herself to make time to write.

“It’s hard, but I have to stay disciplined, make sure I stay on track with my goals,” she says.

Paula Lopes

Kearny when she was 14 and graduated from Kearny High School in 1990. She describes Kearny High School as a great experience with wonderful educators: “I spent one year in high school in Yonkers — it was kind of overwhelming, and then started as a sophomore in Kearny,” Lopes says. “It was different. Everyone knew each other and was very welcoming.”

Lopes started writing poetry at 11. Her first major influence was renowned author and poet Shel Silverstein. One of her favorite works was “The Giving Tree.” She was fascinated by Silverstein’s poetry and illustrations, as well as his style, which was silly and light-hearted while still having the capacity to deliver a powerful message.

“I remember being given my first Shel Silverstein book by one of my elementary teachers and I just absorbed it,” Lopes says. “My mom bought me my first

journal around the same age so I was fooling around with poetry and fighting my own signature style.

This is when I fell in love with poems. It was the best way to express myself.”

Just a few weeks ago, Lopes was cleaning her basement and found a folder with old poems from her early years as a poet.

She has since incorporated two of these poems into her newest book, “Dark Musings Poetry Anthology,” a collection of her best work that toys with nostalgia and memorabilia as well as fun memories and peaceful times she has had with family.

She has published seven books of poetry and short stories under the pen names “PSG Lopes” and “Moonlit Goddess.”

Coming from an artistic family, Lopes is a selfpublished author and does everything herself including the formatting of her books and marketing of her work. Despite all the barriers Lopes has faced, she has continued to pursue her dreams. One of her goals is to establish an independent publishing company so she can expand her writing lines while building a portfolio. Eventually, she wants to help and encour-

age young writers who are interested in starting out publishing their work independently.

Lopes’s advice for young writers is to determine what type of writers they want to become, to know what genre or style they’re into.

“You have to pick what you are comfortable with and practice in order to improve your craft,” she says.

Since she did not go to school specifically for writing, everything she knows is self-taught. She also suggests that new writers should attend author events and book signings.

A crime is committed. There’s a crowd of people who witness the crime. Some may even use their cell phones to record the event.

And then, when police arrive, looking for information from the people who were there, suddenly, everyone falls silent.

It’s an everyday reality that often makes it difficult for detectives to adequately clear their cases.

“I didn’t see nothin’,” is usually the line uttered in some shape or form. Because for some reason, when it comes to cooperating with the police, witnesses tend not to want to get involved.

Unfortunately for investigators, in the real world, this sort of scenario is one faced way too often.

Such could have been the case Feb. 6, when the CVS at Bergen and Schuyler avenues, Kearny, when Mark Alverson, 30, of Newark, is alleged to have robbed the store.

Reports said he pointed to his waistband as if he had a gun on him. He’d demanded the money in the register he had approached. When he was done helping himself to money that didn’t belong to him, he reportedly hopped in a cab and fled to Newark.

Said a Kearny police spokesman: “The detective work that led to this suspect’s arrest in under 40 minutes was bolstered by the cooperation of citizen witnesses who were able to give detailed descriptions to the police. The PD thanks them for their assistance.”

The police were fortunate witnesses came forward to give them the details they needed to nab this guy.

It was all a reminder that doing the right thing, though it may be, at times, at a cost, is always the only thing to do.

Thanks to brave witnesses willing to speak up — and excellent detective work — one less criminal is on our streets.

Well done, KPD and all involved. There couldn’t have been a much better outcome.

KPD: Hell hath no fury like a crabby …

ON FEB. 1 AT 8:20 P.M.,

Kearny Police Officer Sean Podolski responded to Shop-Rite on a call of a shoplifter fighting with store employees. The officer was directed to the parking lot, where staffers were holding down a 17-yearold Newark female. When the officer got the girl to her feet and instructed her to remove her backpack, police said, she chose instead to punch him — landing several arm shots and one on his chin.

The young lady was reintroduced to the ground and handcuffed. Placing her into a police car, however, proved difficult, as she kicked and dented its door and banged her head on the doorframe, the KPD reported.

As an encore, she allegedly tried to kick out a rear window and then spit in the face of Sgt. Jack Corbett, who had opened the door to stop her from kicking.

Shop-Rite staff reported that the incident had started when the girl slapped a store employee who tried to stop her from leaving with $33.89 worth of unpaid-for goods in the backpack.

Juvenile delinquency complaints were filed — charging robbery, aggravated assault (two counts), throwing bodily fluids at a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct — and the girl was remanded to a

juvenile detention center.

And what was she allegedly trying to steal?

Snow crabs.

••• Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following: JAN. 31 At 11:10 p.m., several officers responded to a report of multiple males burglarizing a closed business at the dead end of Arlington Avenue.

Police said Officer John Fearon found Alex Pinto, 18, of Harrison, and a 15-year-old East Newark boy crouched and hiding on the property and acting as lookouts.

The civilian who had called the cops apprehended a third suspect, Steven CastroNieves, 18, of Harrison, and brought him to the officer.

According to police, the trio had been trying to steal a car.

Pinto and Castro-Nieves were charged with burglary and conspiracy and were released on summonses.

The 15-year-old was ordered by a county juvenile intake officer to be released to “home detention” under a guardian’s supervision.

(Spoiler alert: He’s not going to stay home.)

POLICE BEAT Iwanicki, 30, of Kearny, seated in a parked car and hitting the bong. Iwanicki was charged on a summons with possession of pot and paraphernalia.

••• At 9:25 p.m., Officers Andre Fernandes and Harold Azurdia responded to Walmart on a shoplifting complaint. Security reported having watched on surveillance cameras as Norlan Blandon, 32, of Harrison, used the selfcheckout — properly scanning $81.79 of assorted merchandise, but allegedly failing to scan goods valued at $812.12. Blandon was charged on a summons with shoplifting and released.

FEB. 3 Officers Nicole Williams and Chris Medina were patrolling at Bergen and Davis avenues at 1:09 a.m. when they reported a weaving Honda drive past them without its lights on. The officers tried to pull the car over, and it initially stopped on Tappan Street, but then reportedly reversed and came straight back at the police car.

Authorities said the officers also reversed to avoid a collision, the Honda then resumed driving forward and the cops pursued it around the block as it made several traffic infractions.

The car eventually came back to Tappan Street and stopped. Police said the officers approached to find driver Laida Pastorizo, 69, of Kearny, reaching to the left side to try to unbuckle her seatbelt (the driver’s buckle is

The driver was arrested and charged on summonses with eluding, DWI, DWI in a school zone and eight other traffic offenses. She was later released to a sober adult.

Police said her husband, Edison Pastorizo, 67, was charged on a summons with obstructing, for refusing to exit the passenger seat when ordered out of the car.

KPD: Robbery suspect nabbed in 37 minutes

THIRTY-SEVEN MINUTES, FROM THE crime in Kearny to the arrest in Newark.

Thirty-seven minutes.

That, thanks to good detective work and the help of witnesses, was all the time it took on Wednesday, Feb. 6, for the Kearny police to apprehend the suspect in a robbery of the CVS store at Schuyler and Bergen avenues.

It must be some kind of record.

The short but dramatic saga began at 4:03 p.m., Feb. 6, when KPD Officer Sean Wilson and Dets.

John Fabula and Mike Gontarczuk responded to the store on a report that a man had approached a cashier and passed her a note demanding all the money in the register and warning that he had a gun.

at which time a knife fell out of his jacket pocket.

The suspect was identified as Marc Alverson, 30, of Newark. He was charged on a warrant with first-degree robbery.

Additional charges in Newark are reportedly pending stemming from his actions during the arrest.

Police said Alverson was also wanted on warrants issued by Essex County (no bail, probation violation for drugs); Belleville ($1,000, possession of heroin) and Jersey City ($100, possession of heroin).

After the arrest, detectives applied for and executed a search warrant at a residence in Newark, recovering evidence and proceeds of the robbery, police said.

The KPD noted: “The detective work that led to this suspect’s arrest in under 40 minutes was bolstered by the cooperation of citizen witnesses who were able to give detailed descriptions to the police. The PD thanks them for their assistance.”

in East Newark and gave chase, but the driver eluded him across the Bridge Street Bridge. At that point, the KPD terminated the pursuit.

Around 4 p.m., detectives developed information that the Jeep was in a specific neighborhood in Newark.

Dets. John Fabula and Mike Gontarczuk located it parked on South 12th Street, but it was driven off again while they were awaiting backup.

Fabula and Gontarczuk, joined by Dets. Cesar Negron and Mike Andrews, pursued the stolen vehicle again as it led them on a chase up

the Garden State Parkway, exited in Bloomfield and eventually came to a stop in a private driveway.

Apprehended were two 15-year-old Newark boys and one 15-year-old from East Newark. (That’s right, the same boy from the Jan. 31 report who was supposed to be on home detention). All three were charged with receiving stolen property, and the driver was additionally charged with eluding. Police said one was also found to have a $750 traffic warrant for unlicensed driving from a prior incident.

All three were remanded to a juvenile detention center.

Mattia Committee seeks nominations for annual scholarship The Virginius D. Mattia Memorial Committee has begun its 2019 selection process.

The annual award is given to individuals or organizations who demonstrate the volunteer spirit of Dr. Mattia, former president of Hoffmann LaRoche, who died an untimely death in 1971, through dedicated community service.

Nomination forms are available at the library, the Parks and Recreation Building and Town Hall, but a letter with pertinent information on a nominee is acceptable.

Anyone previously nominated is eligible, but updated nominations are helpful.

Nutley Scouts finish 2nd in derby

A GROUP OF NUTLEY SCOUTS have a lot to celebrate these days.

That’s because the “Beav-Haw” team from Nutley Scout Troop No. 147, sponsored by the Franklin Reformed Church, placed second in the Prospectors Division of the Lenape Trail District’s Annual Klondike Derby recently at South Mountain Reservation in West Orange.

Lenape Trail is one of three Scout districts in North

Jersey.

The derby is modeled after the 1898 Alaskan/Yukon Gold Rush in which an estimated 100,000 people traveled to the Klondike region to search or pan for gold. Only around 4,000 ultimately struck it rich.

The day of the derby —temperatures were in the mid-30s —offered little challenge for the 29 teams from 17 troops in 14 Essex County towns that participated. There was no snow this year, but the Klondike sleds maneuvered around patches of ground ice.

It’s a repeat state sectional title for NA’s bowling team

By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com ALTHOUGH THE NORTH ARLINGTON High School boys’ bowling team had captured the NJSIAA state sectional championship twice in the prior three years, there is always a sense of doubt that comes with a new year.

“Every year is different,” said North Arlington veteran bowling coach Dan Farinola.

“Things can change in the blink of an eye.”

How much can things change when it comes to New

Jersey high school bowling?

Well, before this year’s state sectional tournament, there was a format change, where the competing teams all bowled in one day and total pin count was used to determine an overall champion.

For the Vikings, there was a sectional change. After years of competing in North 1A at Bowler City in Hackensack, the Vikings were shifted this year to North 1B held at Lodi Lanes.

It meant different teams and different obstacles.

“We knew we had a different challenge ahead of us,” Farinola said.

The Vikings also headed into the state sectionals on a bit of a down note. Unlike last year, when the Vikings steamrolled their conference opponents, winning an ungodly 111 straight matches, the Vikings lost in the NJIC race this year, falling to rival Lyndhurst by a single game.

Lewis was released by the San Diego Chargers after training camp ended last September, the North Arlington native was convinced that his career as a professional football player, albeit a short one, was over.

The former St. Joseph of Montvale and University of Albany fullback was signed as a free agent by the Chargers last year and invited to training camp.

Manzo-Lewis thought he handled himself fairly well with the Chargers, but really didn’t get a legitimate chance to show what he could do as a pass catcher and blocking fullback.

“I knew I had to prove myself, but I didn’t get too much of an opportunity to do so,” Manzo-Lewis said.

“I got right down to the final cuts, but they let me go.”

After Manzo-Lewis was released, he was told by a handful of teams to stay by the telephone for a future call.

“I had about four teams tell me to stay in shape,” Manzo-Lewis said. “The (Arizona) Cardinals, the (Atlanta) Falcons, the (Tampa Bay) Bucs (Buccaneers) all told me that they were interested in me.

shape and they’ll give me a call. I said to myself, ‘Let’s see what happens.’”

So Manzo-Lewis returned to North Arlington and continued to train and condition the way a professional football player would train during the season.

But when it got to midOctober, reality started to creep into Manzo-Lewis’ head.

“I had to get a job,” Manzo-Lewis said bluntly.

So Manzo-Lewis took a job as an administration analyst for a technology company in Ramsey. He certainly didn’t give up on training, just in case the phone rang and a team was looking for a solid fullback and special teams player.

“I would go to the gym (at Montclair State) every day at 5 a.m., then go to work after,” Manzo-Lewis said.

By mid-November, Manzo-Lewis knew that no NFL team was going to sign any eligible free agents so late in the season.

But right around that same time frame, ManzoLewis heard about the new professional football league that was preparing to kickoff in February of 2019, a spanking new organization that was the brain trust of Charlie Ebersol, the son of

“We were laser focused,” Farinola said. “Once we knew that we were going to lose the league, everything was focused toward the states.”

So right before the state sectional championships, the Vikings closed out the regular season in impressive fashion, setting a new school record for pins against Wood-Ridge in the final match of the regular season.

“That showed me that they were focused,” Farinola said.

“They were 100 percent ready.

I felt like we had a good shot. I felt like we could stack up with everyone. I didn’t want them to be overconfident. I just wanted them to be prepared.”

The Vikings came out of the blocks Saturday like gangbusters.

They rolled an 849 total in the first game, the highest score in all of North Jersey Group I. Seniors Eric McKenna (249)

and Liam Henkel (188) were on fire from the start, giving the Vikings a 55-pin lead that they would not relinquish.

“The lanes were slick and were freshly oiled,” Farinola said. “But we made some adjustments and got through it. The second game, all we wanted to do was hit our marks.”

The Vikings all started to click in Game 2, rolling a total of 940, almost 100 pins more than they had in Game 1. McKenna had a 216. Henkel had a 202. Junior Trent Petito had a 182. Freshman Peyton Esposito had a 173 and junior Rahul Patel had a 167.

It meant that the Vikings had a 200-pin lead going into the third and final game, so no one was going to deny them.

For good measure, McKenna rolled a 220, Henkel had his best game of the day, posting a 234 and Patel had a 176. The Vikings rolled an 897 for a combined total of 2,686 pins. Leonia was second with 2,401, which meant that the Vikings won by an unconscionable total of 285

pins.

And North Arlington had its third state sectional title in the last four years. The Vikings never won a state sectional crown before four years ago.

Now, they have three.

Needless to say, it’s a display of dominance on the lanes.

“It’s pretty impressive,” Farinola said. “We can sit back and look at it now and I never thought we would be able to achieve anything like it. We preach consistency. We have a big advantage over most by having a bowling alley in town, so we should be able to take advantage of that.”

McKenna and Henkel qualified for Friday’s individual Tournament of Champions at Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick. McKenna just missed being the state sectional medalist, finishing second by just one pin to Johan Gamo of Clifton.

Henkel finished 12th overall.

The Vikings as a team moved on to Wednesday’s overall team championships, also at Carolier Lanes.

Farinola believes that the

team’s competitive nature carries them.

“I think because they all compete with each other,” Farinola said. “We treat bowling as a competitive sport. The goal was always to have a team that could compete.”

Farinola said that he wanted to instill that kind of mentality in his student/athletes after watching the Lyndhurst program flourish.

“I watched Lyndhurst with former coach Mike Rizzo (now a middle school principal in Lyndhurst) and admired the way they competed,” Farinola said. “I wanted to do the same in North Arlington. We do a real good job of taking everything seriously. Even our JV (junior varsity) matches are competitive.”

Another reason for the Vikings’ success is the amount of talent. In some years, the standout bowler would be asked to carry the rest of the team. It’s not so much the case any longer.

“I think the depth in our lineup is huge,” Farinola said. “Es-

pecially in tournament play.

Everyone has to chip in. Everyone has to do their job. Eric is having a great year, sure, but we need consistency from No. 2 through No. 5.”

McKenna has been a driving force, but Henkel is no slouch with a 195 average. Patel has a 160 average.

So the Vikings move on with modest goals in sight. Of course, they would love to be the No. 1 Group I program in New Jersey.

“When we’re clicking, we’re up there with anyone,” Farinola said. “That’s the mindset we need moving forward.”

So if the Vikings fall a little short of their goal, there’s nothing to be ashamed of.

“I’m really proud of these kids,” Farinola said. “These kids lost the entire league by two pins and came back to win it. I’m really proud of this group. For us to win back-toback is impressive.”

And what about three state sectional titles in four years?

“Really impressive,” Farinola said.

The new league, called the Alliance of American Football (AAF), was designed to be a spring feeder league for the NFL, much like the G League is for the NBA. The new league would enable spring football to have a rebirth in America and would serve as a true feeder system, with players that were not under contract with NFL teams to get a chance to play and maybe get noticed by the NFL teams.

The AAF was formed with the assistance of the NFL, just at a much lower price tag. The players would all receive the same exact contracts (three year, $250,000), so there would be no need for salary caps and free agency and unbalanced pay scales.

“I liked the fact that he was the coach,” Manzo-Lewis said.

There were no guarantees involved. Manzo-Lewis had to earn a spot on the Express’s final 53-man roster.

That process all began with a month-long training camp in San Antonio with all eight teams together in unison.

“That was pretty cool,” Manzo-Lewis said. “Everywhere you went in San Antonio, there were people wearing Alliance stuff.”

Manzo-Lewis was excited to be part of the new league, especially since he had never even visited San Antonio before.

“I picked up a new playbook and only had a month or so to get ready,” Manzo-Lewis said.

The unlikely hero: NA’s Lynch reaches 1,000 point milestone

When Matt Lynch was an eighth grade student in the North Arlington school district, he would step into the gymnasium at the high school and see the impressive banner with all the 1,000-point scorers in the school’s history and dream.

“Every day I saw that banner,” Lynch said. “And every single day, ever since I stepped into the school, I saw the banner and said to myself, ‘I’m going to give it my shot.’ I was determined to get up there.”

Of course, Lynch heard all the grumblings that he didn’t exactly look like a basketball

player and didn’t fit the mold of the 1,000-point history makers.

He wasn’t lean and lanky. He wasn’t fleet afoot. Lynch resembled someone who you would find in the library reading a book or in the audio/visual lab watching a film about some historical figure.

Lynch stands about 6-foot-1 and isn’t someone who looks like he was carved out of a block of granite or molded into a sculpture from clay.

“You look at him and he doesn’t look like a great player,” said North Arlington

head basketball coach Marcello D’Andrea.

Lynch has never let the chatter and noise get to him.

“I ignore it all,” Lynch said.

“I never pay attention to what other people say. To be successful in basketball, you need to be more than athletic. I always think that the smarter player, the more intelligent player will win out over the other player.”

And there isn’t a person alive who is going to question Lynch’s intelligence quotient, also known in layman’s terms as an IQ. Or to break it down

And recently, in unfortunately an overtime loss to Cliffside Park, Lynch became the latest member of the 1,000-point club.

Lynch needed 15 points to etch his name onto the prestigious banner. He got 17.

And for his efforts, Lynch has been selected as The Observer Athlete of the Week for the last week.

His buddy and former backcourt mate Nick DeGrace joined the 1,000-point club last year, becoming the first Viking player to reach the prestigious mark since 2012 when former Observer Male Athlete of the Year Tyler Krychkowski put his name on the hanging banner.

D’Andrea was asked to describe Lynch’s game.

“It’s funny,” D’Andrea said. “If you look for one quality, it’s not there. But the results are. He boxes out and gets rebounds against guys bigger. He dives on the floor for loose balls. He’s doing all the little things to make himself successful.

I think he knows that and puts himself in a position to succeed. He’s not going to jump over you. He’s not as athletic as everyone else.

But he gets his points. For Matt to grind it out and get 1,000 points speaks leaps and bounds about what kind of a kid he is. He did more with less than a lot of others.

Added D’Andrea, “He’s been the catalyst this year.

Matt’s toughest critic has always been himself. He’s

been hard on himself. But he comes every day with intensity. He doesn’t have the 40-point games, just 16 or 17. That’s him, pretty consistent.”

D’Andrea also likes Lynch’s approach.

“Anytime you get a kid like him, you appreciate it,” D’Andrea said. “He’s always, ‘Yes, Coach,’ or ‘No, Coach.’

Just so respectful. I appreciate that.”

Lynch likes the fact that he’s appreciated.

“I want to be known as the guy who played hard, down to the last possession,” Lynch said. “I’m always focused on trying to get the win. I don’t care about points. I played this game (Saturday) like it was any other game. I wasn’t worried about getting 1,000 this game.

I just wanted the win and I was focused on that.”

The win wasn’t there, the milestone was.

Now, Lynch can finish out his high school days with perhaps another win or two – and a couple of places on the all-time scoring list.

Manzo-Lewis liked the caveat that was attached to each AAF contract.

“I can sign an NFL contract at any time,” ManzoLewis said. “I’m getting a chance to play now at the highest level with everyone watching.”

With the NFL season over, the AAF is literally the only football game in town. Well, at least in Memphis it is.

And yes, Anthony ManzoLewis is the first-ever professional football player to ever hail from North Arlington.

“I like the way that sounds,” Manzo-Lewis said.

It’s a distinction that will never go away.

The Centro Romeu Cascaes hosted its annual meeting on Sunday, Feb. 10, at its new community center location at 14 Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard North, Harrison.

President Delfim Sarabando announced he was going to remain on as President to provide a smooth transition, although he had originally planned to pass on the presidency to another capable member. Sarabando is a founding member. Kearny FD sends 3 new recruits to the academy THREE NEW FIREFIGHTERS ARE GOING on the Kearny Fire Department payroll, starting Feb. 19.

The appointments of Robert Digravina, Patrick Dos Santos Rodrigues and Brian McCurrie were approved by the municipal governing body at the Feb. 5 meeting.

Each will receive the starting pay of $33,000 a year.

All are replacements for retirees, according to Fire Chief Steven Dyl. Assuming they make it through their mandated training, the rookies will bring the department’s total strength up to 101 – one short of the maximum number of personnel permitted under the department’s Table of Organization, according to Dyl. If McCurrie’s name sounds familiar, there’s every reason it should.

McCurrie, a longtime Kearny resident whose dad Michael McCurrie is a KFD member, was hired last year as a Kearny police officer but opted to sign himself out of the police training academy in favor of accepting a position with the Fire Department, according to fire officials.

McCurrie had previously taken state Civil Service tests for the KFD and KPD and was currently listed as the third highest ranking for a firefighter appointment and he is qualified to take the job, Dyl said.

And McCurrie already has a working knowledge of the department since he has served as a “dispatcher” with the KFD since August 2013 – when the department began phasing in civilians in place of uniformed firefighters to handle emergency and fire response calls.

At some point, McCurrie applied for – and got – a job as an officer with the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office but left that post after a month, Dyl said.

In November 2018, McCurrie was switched from a full-time dispatcher to part-timer.

A Kearny High School alum, McCurrie has taken classes in civil engineering at Potomac State College of West Virginia University and at Bergen County College.

Robert Digravina, whose brother John is a Kearny firefighter, is a KHS graduate who has previously worked as a painter with J & M Decorators, a family-owned business in Kearny. He placed first on the Civil Service certification list.

Patrick Dos Santos Rodrigues was born in Venezuela and has lived in Kearny since 2003. A graduate of East Side High School in Newark, Dos Santos Rodrigues is a certified

KFD NEWS EMT and previously served with the Township of Union Emergency Medical Unit.

Dyl said the recruits are scheduled to start their state-mandated firefighter training program at the Morris County Fire Academy on March 4.

Digravina will also have to undergo training as an EMT – a requirement that McCurrie and Dos Santos Rodrigues already have completed, according to Dyl. “By June, we should have them on line duty,” he said.

In other business conducted at last week’s meeting, the mayor and Town Council also: • Welcomed Gerald Ficeto as the newest member of the governing body. Ficeto, who submitted a letter of resignation from the Kearny Recreation Commission, takes the Fourth Ward council seat vacated

by Michael Landy, who resigned in December. Ficeto will serve one year. There will be an election in November for someone to fill what will then be the two years remaining in Landy’s unexpired term.

• Agreed to consider – but not commit to – entering into a cooperative purchasing agreement with The Interlocal Purchasing System (TIPS), based in Texas, for “equity leasing of vehicles needed for various town departments.”

Town Business Administrator Bob Smith said the town would “be concerned with the life cycle cost of a vehicle” in its evaluation of the company’s pitch. Smith said the town would be looking to strengthen its motor pool for the Health, Construction and Public Works departments. “The number of vehicles is still up in the air,” he said. “We’re still operating with 1995 and 2004 models in some cases,” Smith said, and repair costs are mounting.

• Authorized filing an appeal of a recent Hudson County Superior Court ruling that concurs with the N.J. Sports & Exposition Authority’s position on a condemnation/ valuation case involving the Keegan landfill.

The court endorsed NJSEA’s claim that the fair market value for the 100-acre landfill formerly owned by Kearny is about $1.8 million — far lower than Kearny’s estimate.

The case will now go to the state Appeals Court for a determination.

The flames burned partially through the basement ceiling, into the first floor and then into concealed spaces in walls, spreading up into the cockloft (attic), Osborn said. The fire then traveled horizontally into a thirdfloor north apartment, he said.

Rapid movement of the fire prompted a second alarm to be sounded at 9:26 p.m., along with a call for mutual aid, resulting in the arrival of rigs from Harrison and Jersey City. A third alarm followed at 9:56 p.m., bringing additional apparatus from North Arlington and Belleville.

Osborn said firefighters

cut holes in the roof as fire “was busting out of the walls” in an effort to relieve the pressure and heat, building up in the building but as the footing became more precarious and the roof became “spongy,” a command decision was made to go to a “defensive” position.

At that point, Osborn said, “we called everyone out of the building” and five hose lines streamed water on the building from the front and rear of the property.

The fire caused “extensive damage throughout the structure,” Fire Chief Steven Dyl said.

A neighboring residential building at 158 Midland Ave. sustained some water damage as its occupants were evacuated, but they were later allowed back in, Dyl said.

Only a “well-coordinated attack” on the fire and “good command decisions”

by Deputy Chief Joseph Mastandrea and Osborn managed to keep the fire from spreading to adjacent structures, Dyl said.

“The cause is undetermined,” the chief said, “without ruling out the possibility of an electrical fire.”

As of last week, an investigation by the KFD inspector was proceeding, according to the chief.

At the fire’s peak, there were four engines and one ladder truck from Kearny, four rigs from Jersey City and Harrison, two from North Arlington and one from Belleville for a total of 12 on scene, staffed by about 60 fire personnel.

Bayonne Fire Department provided stand-by coverage at Kearny firehouses during the fire.

One KFD engine remained at the scene overnight as a safeguard against flames erupting but, by morning, the fire was pretty well consumed, Dyl said.

No pets were believed to be in the building at the time of the fire, the chief said.

Dyl said a social worker at the Kearny Health Department and a Red Cross representative provided emergency help to the family members, all of whom reportedly have found at least temporary shelter.

Some, however, “are going to need long-term assistance,” Dyl said.

Several eyewitnesses who were at the scene discussed the fire with The Observer.

“When I first got nearby, it was a lot of smoke coming from the basement,” said Pedro Ruiz, of Kearny.

“Then, real fast, you could see flames coming out the windows. It was intense.”

Another witness echoed Ruiz’s sentiments.

“Those firefighters had their hands full,” Mary Cantor, also of Kearny, said. “One thing is for sure though. It wasn’t as cold that night as it could have been for a February night.

I can’t imagine how much more difficult it would have been for those guys out there if it was frigid out. No matter what though, they all did a great job.”

OBITUARIES MARY CATHERINE DUNN

Mary Catherine Dunn, a North Arlington resident since 1963, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019.

She was 95.

Born in New York City on Aug. 17, 1923, she was raised in Jersey City where she attended St. Michael’s Grammar School and Ferris High School.

Mary worked for New York Bell/Verizon in New York City for 34 years before retiring in 1981.

Earlier, she worked for RCA in Harrison.

She was a member of the North Arlington Happy Seniors, the North Arlington Elks Lodge No. 1992 and the Deborah Hospital Foundation.

Mary loved her family, animals and children, and was one of the kindest people you could ever meet.

The Queen of Peace Knights of Columbus welcome all to its February Lecture Series on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m., at the Columbian Club Hall (194 River Road, North Arlington) to see and hear Christine Flaherty’s presentation and talk about LifeNet and the 20/20 Project. LifeNet visits schools and churches throughout the Archdiocese of Newark, spreading the message about the concepts of abstinence and chastity. WLADYSLAW LAPINSKI

Wladyslaw Lapinski of Harrison died at St. Michael’s Medical Center, Newark, on Friday, Feb. 8, 2019, after a short illness.

He was 84.

Funeral services were under the direction of Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave. Harrison. A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Czestochowa

Church, Harrison. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Born in Gorski, Poland, he moved to the United States in 1979 and lived in Harrison ever since. He worked as a machinist for many years in Hackensack.

He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, Harrison.

Predeceased by his wife Teresa in 2015, he is survived by his loving daughter Bogumilla Groszewska; his dear brothers and sisters Tadeusz Lapinski, Jan Lapinski and Janina Konopka; and by many nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, Harrison, in care of the funeral home, in loving memory of Wladyslaw.

Peter was the owner of Arlington Monumental Works in Kearny.

He graduated from Kearny High School and Norwich University, in Northfield, Vermont, with a degree in aviation. He entered the U.S. Army and became a fixed wing and helicopter pilot. He served as President of the Chamber of Commerce, President of the Optimist Club, and was on the Board of Directors for the Salvation Army.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington, serving as treasurer and deacon. He also belonged to the CopestoneOphir Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Elaine (Henkel) Malnati, and three children, Mark and his wife

Karen, Mitchell and Lauren Henning. Peter was blessed with six grandsons, Douglas and Matthew Malnati, Mitchell and Max Malnati and John (Jack) and Grant Henning; and two greatgrandchildren.

He has two sisters, Mrs. Robert Whinham and Dorothy Woodnorth and her husband George.

He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Raymond Perreault, Mrs. Harold Boisvert; and brother-in-law Ronald Henkel, all of Vermont.

He had many nieces and nephews in New Jersey and Vermont.

With respect to Peter’s wishes, his body was donated to the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Anatomical Association.

There will be no memorial service.
