Fabula-led investigation leads to KPD takedown of massive cargotheft network

A

1½-YEAR INVESTIGATION, COMMENCED by the Kearny Police Department’s Detective Bureau under lead Det. John Fabula, has led to the arrest of numerous area men reportedly responsible for a major, $4 million-plus cargo-theft network, the KPD and Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office announced jointly on Friday, Dec. 14.

On Nov. 30, 2018, the KPD arrested seven men — an eighth was arrested Dec. 6 — in connection with the network following a lengthy investigation into thefts from multiple Kearny trucking yards, Kearny Police Chief George King said.

According to King: The investigation was initiated by the Kearny Police Department and the New Jersey State Police 18-months ago. In that timeframe, there had been approximately 15 thefts of tractor-trailer containers from Kearny trucking yards.

The stolen merchandise included food, cosmetics, chemicals, tires, linen, clothing and liquor with an approximate total retail value of more than $4 million. The stolen merchandise was housed in warehouses in Linden, North Bergen and Clifton subsequent to the thefts.

HE KEARNY POLICE Department’s Community Policing Unit has always been known for its beneficial work with the youngsters in town. But since he took over as Police Chief a little more than a year ago, George King says he directed the unit to expand its focus beyond kids.

And as a result, COP has been delivering a seminar of sorts to senior citizens — first at St. Stephen’s Seniors gathering — and then, last week, on Thursday, Dec. 13, to the senior citizens of the Henrietta Benstead Center on Columbia Avenue — on how to avoid becoming the victims of scam artists, who often prey on the elderly.

“It is very important for us to connect with our senior groups and our senior citizen community,” the chief said.

“One of the things I mandated with Sgt. Marques and the community-policing unit was to get back out and do programs like this. Today, we’re going to talk about safety and scams and how you can make yourself safe from these things and it’s really educational.

“These scams happen for everybody. I got several phone calls, one this morning, that I won a free cruise. And they just wanted my credit card number to secure my cruise.

Well, if it’s free, then why am I giving you my credit card?

So these things happen to everyone … the people who run these scams are very, very accomplished.

“I was always told if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is … so follow your instincts — if it doesn’t seem right, it’s probably not. … And don’t hesitate to reach out to us — that’s what we’re here for. I hear from people and, after the fact, they say to me, ‘we didn’t want to bother you.’ You are not a bother. People contacting us — it’s never a bother, that’s what we’re here for.”

Sevillano kicked off the actual presentation by reminding seniors that scams happen everywhere — including Kearny. She said the most noted scam for senior citizens involves Medicare.

Since Medicare is a guarantee for those 65 and older, there’s rarely a need for insurance companies — or fraudsters — to make contact with seniors to ask for money.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please — do not share your

Medicare information,” Sevillano said. “Never. These people are very knowledgeable when they contact you.

Whether it’s by phone or a knock on the door or through mail, they know exactly what to say, and unfortunately, some of us may fall for it and that’s the problem here.”

She also said prescription drugs and telemarketing are often the topic of scam artist phone calls.

“I get 10 phone calls a day and I am not exaggerating,” Sevillano said. “I don’t pick up the phone anymore. If I don’t know the phone number, I don’t pick it up. Just this morning, I got a call from Slovenia. I have no idea and it’s the weirdest number. I had another one from Idaho — I don’t know these numbers.”

Among the methods used in these kinds of scams, Sevillano noted: • Scammers will call and say there’s a big amount of money to be split if you’ll make a goodfaith payment first. This does not happen, she says, in reality — if you’ve won a contest, or money, you’d never have to pay to play.

• The fake accident ploy — your grandson is in the hospital and needs money — and all you have to do to help is wire it by Western Union or MoneyGram or buy a Green Dot Money Pak. Never allow this to happen, she says. Call relatives to confirm whether they’re in hospital. Chances are they aren’t.

• The charity scam — this often happens after natural disasters, she says, as was the case following Super Storm Sandy. If you’re called to donate to a charity, chances are it’s a scam. Never give your personal information to the caller — especially credit card numbers.

Marques also said he, himself, gets emails all the time from “companies” telling him he owes them money.

won’t be addressed by name, and that’s a sure sign you’re about to be scammed if you proceed.

“If I owe something, they’re going to contact me through the mail,” Marques said. “The IRS will never contact you through the phone (or online) to pay anything. They’ll contact you through the mail — they want documentation.

Eagle Scout’s project leads to war museum

[and/or] “an organization other than the Boy Scouts of America, and it cannot be performed for an individual or a business or be commercial in nature.”

Recently, a 16-year-old Scout from Wood-Ridge completed his Eagle Scout project here in Kearny, and it not only benefits this community but honors a community of American heroes that dates back to 1775: The U.S. Marine Corps.

In what had been a small, neglected room on the upper floor of the Marine Corps League West Hudson Detachment’s headquarters on Belgrove Drive, there is now a brand-new, and fascinating, museum dedicated to the Corps’ legendary history. And it’s there because of that teenager, Kristian Tegge, son of the West Hudson League’s Commandant, Adam Tegge.

Kristian, a sophomore at Bergen County Academies in Hackensack and a member of Troop 17 in Hasbrouck Heights, began his BSA career as a Cub Scout in the first-grade and he has been committed to the Scout oath (“On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law …”) ever since.

With a couple of more merit badges — and the completion of the museum — he is well on his way to receiving the coveted Eagle Scout rank.

The League’s HQ, formerly a private home, was leased to it in 1976. The upper floor had not been used regularly for some time when Kristian launched his project. First task: Get rid of the ancient carpet that covered the floor. With the pro-bono help of Keystone Mountain

Lakes Regional Council of Carpenters and Floor Layers, Local 251 (phew!), the original underlying wooden floor was stripped and patched and stained and sealed and now gleams in the sunlight.

But it’s what is on the walls and in the display cases that makes this such a special place. And most, if not all, the artifacts were found in the building’s attic, where they had languished, forgotten, for decades. It’s not that the Marines didn›t care; they likely didn’t even know what was hidden up there.

But Kristian, with the help of his father and other Boy Scouts, searched the place and uncovered a treasure trove: helmets, ammo cases, daggers and swords, uniforms, medals, chevrons, photos, flags, Leatherneck magazines, newspaper clippings, posters from World Wars I and II, etc., etc. Some things required restoration, and that was part of the project, too. And now formerly hidden history has a deserved spotlight.

In all, Kristian put in a total of 124 hours work on the task.

“Sometimes, there were 10 guys here; sometimes, it was just me and my father,” he said.

An Eagle Scout project also requires some financial skill.

Kristian had estimated an initial budget of $2,100 to complete the museum. The final cost: $728.

“A lot of the money came from Kearny businesses,” he said, along with the League’s Ladies Auxiliary.

intriguing museum artifact, at least to me, is a map. What it depicts is the island of Iwo Jima, scene of some of the fiercest fighting of the war in the Pacific. On that 8 squaremile isle, some 110,000 U.S. Marines, soldiers, sailors

and airmen — supported by more than 500 ships — defeated the Japanese forces. (And planted that U.S. flag atop Mt. Suribachi.)

The battle of Iwo Jima took place in February and March 1945.

The map is stamped “SECRET.” And it is dated November 1944.

Where did THAT come from? And how did it end up in Kearny? And does the Smithsonian have anything so rare? (Don’t tell them about it.)

Kristian launched his project in September, and the official ribboncutting took place this past Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

Two highlights of the exhibits: One area is devoted to the story of the Rev. Vincent R. Capodanno, a Maryknoll priest who served as a military chaplain during the Vietnam War and whose dedication to both God and his countrymen is legendary among Marines.

Father Capodanno died Sept. 4, 1967, during a battle in the Que Son Valley.

Despite being wounded himself, he refused medical aid and was still administering Last Rites to American troops when he was killed by enemy fire. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

The museum display features a framed portrait, letters from the priest’s family and various press clippings telling his story.

These did not come from the League’s attic. The origin is a complete mystery.

As Adam Tegge noted, “One day, there were several bags full of [Capodanno] pictures and clippings and memorabilia just sitting on our front porch. We don’t know who put them there.”

File that under Marine miracle? Maybe someday the donor will make him/ herself known?

Kearny council ponders parking permits

But first you need to find a parking spot.

Too many Kearny residents have found themselves in that sad

predicament, no matter what part of town they live in.

“It’s already established parking is a town-wide problem,” town business administrator Robert Smith said.

In recognition of the competition for curbside spaces, Kearny is actively exploring the possibility of creating a resident parking permit program and, to that

end, has solicited proposals for a parking permit consultant.

That outside expert would be asked to recommend the best way to implement such a program “if it’s determined by the mayor and Town Council to be the best way to handle the problem,” Smith said.

Even when buying a new home from a builder, it pays to work with a real estate broker in order to protect your interests. To begin with, buyers should be sure that any earnest-money deposit they make be put into an interest-bearing escrow account held by a third party, which may be a licensed broker.

This is especially important when construction has yet to be completed.

Even when construction is completed, unpaid subcontractors may still be able to file legal claims called “mechanic’s liens” against the property, which must be settled before a clear title can be established. Thus, buyers should require that the builder supply proof (lien waivers) in the sales contract that

all the subcontractors have been paid.

There is a common misconception among buyers that the process of buying new construction is pretty straightforward: walk into the builder’s office, pick a lot and design, and sign on the dotted line. What many potential buyers don’t consider is that the friendly salesperson at a new-home site is representing the builder, not the buyer. Clara’s new D&I chief is Nutley resident A Nutley woman has been named Director of Diversity & Inclusion at Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville.

Desyra A. HighsmithHolcomb assumed the newlycreated position Nov. 26.

As the Director of Diversity and Inclusion, Desyra will implement and manage specific initiatives under the guidance of the Chief Diversity Officer that will include project development for patient experience, population health, local supplier inclusion, operational alignment and excellence, as aligned with the system-wide goals for health equity within the populations served by RWJBH as well as the healthcare system’s workforce.

Highsmith-Holcomb comes to CMMC from William Paterson University, Wayne, where she held various roles including Associate Director of Human Resources, Director of Talent Management and more recently, Chief Diversity Officer.

There, she developed and executed initiatives to advance the university’s culture, improve employee engagement and to recruit and retain a diverse faculty, staff and administration.

She delivered opportunities for the university community to increase awareness of issues related to discrimination, equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion. She also established partnerships and outreach strategies to foster inclusion and engagement and helped to drive strategies and operationalize business objectives in the areas of

recruitment, hiring, training and development, employee relations and engagement, institutional culture and reward and recognition.

During her tenure at Legrand & Middle Atlantic Products in Fairfield from 20052014, Highsmith-Holcomb held the role of Human Resources Manager, Manager of Human Resources-Center of Excellence and Training and Development Manager. In these roles, she developed and led a host of employee and leadership programs that ranged from organizational and professional development programs to employee engagement and HR branding.

From 2000 to 2005, she was also a corporate trainer at Middlesex and Raritan Valley colleges.

Highsmith-Holcomb earned an undergraduate degree in psychology and sociology from Rutgers University-New Brunswick and a graduate degree in strategic corporate communication from William Paterson University and a certificate in human-resources management from Farleigh Dickinson University. She has also earned certificates as a Franklin Covey trainer and she is also certified in Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator Personality Assessment.

program to address areas identified by the town.”

Nor, Smith said, will the consultant be asked to include “planning for construction of parking infrastructure” like deck parking — an expensive proposition.

Proposals were to include a cost estimate for the service but that information wasn’t readily available last week when requested.

Just how pervasive a problem is on-street parking in Kearny?

“A majority of our residents are coping with trying to find spots, particularly at night, having always to search for parking when they’re coming home from work,” Fourth Ward Councilwoman Susan McCurrie said.

McCurrie said parking is “very difficult in my ward,” largely as a consequence of the ward “having a lot of row-houses and many multifamilies.”

In the First and Second wards, curbside spaces are tough to find “because many residents there don’t have garages or driveways,” McCurrie said.

“Over the years the problem has mushroomed,” McCurrie said, because “it seems like everyone in a family over the age of 18 has a car,” so street parking tends to be more and more a predicament.

“Most residents would say there’s not enough curbside parking,” McCurrie said, “so we need to do something.”

And the notion of issuing resident parking permits “has come up” in discussions among elected officials as a possible remedy, she said.

If the town does hire a consultant, then, McCurrie said, it would make sense “to try and figure out a plan globally, or in neighborhoods; how it would be run – whether by creating a local parking authority or whether it would be managed straight out of one of the town offices.”

The town would need to know cost projections for both administration – handling permit applications, issuing permits, etc. – and for enforcement, “which would require more staff,” McCurrie said.

“There are different options out there,” McCurrie said. “So that’s why we’re looking to get a consultant to advise us what system would work best for us. We’d want to know about things like timing (permit hours), how many permits will be issued, guest permits, staffing – there’s a lot to go through and figure out so we want to know how we do it if we do it and make sure we have the details down correctly. Also, is there an area in town that doesn’t need the program and if so, will there be any impact from neighboring permit zones?”

Consideration of parking garages as part of the consultant’s study will be out of bounds, McCurrie said, because, typically, a deck is “a multi-million-dollar project” — something beyond the town’s fiscal scope.

An independent parking authority, on the other hand, has the authority to bond.

Kearny’s Escobar named to Allstate All-America team When Matthew Escobar transferred from Hudson Catholic High School in Jersey City back to his home district school Kearny High School in August of 2017, he had no idea what the future held.

Little did Escobar know that in the span of just 15 months, he would be a major part of an undefeated state championship soccer team and a little while later, Escobar would be selected as an All-American.

“I’m actually speechless,” Escobar said recently, after he learned he was selected to the Allstate All-America soccer team, along with the top 125 juniors in the country. “I’m shocked and surprised. I have no words for it. I don’t know how it happened, but I’m filled with joy.”

Escobar has no idea how he was nominated for the award. Nor does Bill Galka, his coach

at Kearny High. All both know that Galka received an e-mail from the Allstate insurance people who painstakingly search the nation for the top underclass players.

They were impressed with Escobar’s resume and selected him for the honor.

The players selected will be invited to participate in the Allstate AllAmerica Cup in Orlando, Florida during the Major League Soccer All-Star week next summer. Four legendary United States national soccer stars will serve as coaches in the All-America Cup game. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU. Needless to say, this is a very big deal.

“I’m happy for the kid,” Galka said. “It’s a tremendous honor for him.

I’m glad he’s getting the recognition he deserves.

At first glance, the North Arlington High School girls’ basketball team might not inflict fear in opponents this season. After all, the Lady Vikings will start five players who are all similar in size.

Asking third-year head coach Karissa DePena which player plays what position, and the coach honestly just says, “Guard.”

DePena is not wrong in uttering such a phrase, because the Lady Vikings resemble a bunch of guards.

“We’re going to be small and aggressive,” said DePena, who led the Vikings to an 1114 record last season. “We’re going to use our speed to go up against our opponents.”

And the lack of size?

“I frankly don’t see it as a problem,” DePena said. “If we play the right defense, we will do just fine. We’re going to use our physicality. That’s going to be our main weapon.

We’re going to do different things against teams that have height.”

Leading the returning players is 5-foot-3 senior guard – of course, they all are – Samantha DiPopolo.

DiPopolo averaged close to nine points per game last year as the team’s main floor general.

“She’s the leader on the floor,” DiPena said. “She’s going to be my voice on the floor and my playmaker. We’re putting a lot of responsibility on her shoulders this year. She’s a great perimeter shooter and

a good penetrator. She can take it to the basket strong.

She knows how to get out of traffic and make a play. She’s also very fast.”

Senior Jennifer Garcia is the team’s 5-foot-4 shooting guard.

“She’s a very good 3-point shooter,” DePena said. “She’s another leader that I will depend upon. She knows how to use her height to her advantage and she knows how to get open on the floor.”

Garcia averaged 10 points per game last season.

Senior Emily Cordova is also 5-foot-4, but for all intents and purposes here, she’ll be a forward.

“She’s the leader of the

defense,” DePena said. “She’s very aggressive. She’s not afraid to use her height battling taller players. She is also able to get rebounds.”

Senior Gabriela Marques is a 5-foot-5 swing player.

“She plays like our big man,” DePena said. “She’s super aggressive. She’s extremely fast. She has the ability to lock down the other player for the whole game. She’s a real go-getter.”

Senior Katherine Garcia is a 5-foot-5 guard and the sister of Jennifer.

“She has a great basketball IQ,” DePena said. “She sees

Escobar found a place in the Kardinals’ lineup right away after arriving from Hudson Catholic last year as a sophomore. He played a crucial role in the Kardinals posting an 18-0-5 record in 2017, culminating in the Kardinals capturing the overall NJSIAA Group IV state championship in November that year.

Escobar was a starter at center midfield this past season for the Kards, collecting two goals and 14 assists as the team’s main ball distributor.

“He’s definitely one of our key guys in the midfield,” Galka said. “He’s a dangerous player, creating plays.

He can switch the ball well and get it to other players.

Galka has no idea how Escobar was nominated for the award or how he received consideration. No one contacted him prior to the e-mail that said Escobar was a recipient. Both coach and player first wondered if it was legit.

“I first thought someone was joking with me,” Escobar said. “I didn’t believe it.”

In fact, when Escobar was summoned to speak with Galka, the player immediately thought the worst.

“To be honest, I thought I got in trouble,” Escobar said.

“I didn’t know what to expect. But when Coach Galka handed me the letter and I saw Allstate All-American, I was really shocked. I was so happy. I really had no idea.”

Escobar was so skeptical about the whole idea that he first didn’t tell anyone.

“I only told my three closest friends after the school had a little pep rally for me,” Escobar said. “And our AD (athletic director Vin Almeida) announced it to everyone. Whoever knows me knows that I knew noth-

ing about what was happening.”

Escobar is excited about the chance to take the trip to Florida and play with the nation’s best. He’s one of only three New Jersey players selected to the All-America squad, joining Brendan McSorley of state champion Delbarton and Aidan Murphy of Seton Hall Prep.

Escobar plays in the offseason for the famed Ironbound 18-and-under club team and recently participated in the Elite Development Program talent showcase in Hammonton.

Still, this All-America honor caught Escobar totally off guard.

“To be honest, I don’t know how it all happened,” Escobar said. “But it’s definitely going to be a big help for me.”

Of course, Escobar has aspirations to play soccer in college, preferably on the NCAA Division I level.

Earning All-America status certainly helps those chances tremendously.

“I won’t stop until I’m

successful,” Escobar said.

“I’ll be going to a few tournaments with Ironbound and I’ll go to a few more showcases. I’m comfortable with the way I’ve been playing. I’m sure someone will give me a chance. I’m up for any challenge that comes my way.”

Part of that challenge will now mean playing with an All-American tag.

“I don’t mind that responsibility,” Escobar said. “I’m pretty good with it. All I know is that it’s amazing.”

Galka knows that he will lean on his All-America player next fall.

“We’re losing a lot of senior players, so we’re counting on Matt to be a leader for us next year,” Galka said. “We need him to take more of a leadership role. He’s certainly one of our main guys to take that leadership role. We need him to be more of an attacking player and need him to score a little more. But he’s a good, exciting player.”

And he’s one that will have an exciting name attached to him from now on, that being an All-American.

When the normally round front part of the eye known as the “cornea” thins out and bulges, this abnormality prevents the light entering the eye from focusing properly on the retina, resulting in visual distortion. In its earliest stages (usually late teens or early 20s), the noninflammatory vision disorder known as “keratoconus” causes mild blurring, distorted vision, and increased light sensitivity.

As keratoconus progresses over a period of one to two decades, the cornea may bulge to a greater degree, and vision may become more distorted. While the Early College Program enters its second year and continues to grow, a new program was established to provide students with an opportunity to begin a career immediately after high school.

North Arlington Public Schools, in partnership with BCC, developed the Early Career Program, which offers 12th-grade students the opportunity to concurrently earn certificates in advanced manufacturing, while also meeting the requirements to obtain a New Jersey high school diploma.

Students who complete the Early Career Program can earn credentials such as Certified Logistics Associate (CLA), Certified Logistics Technician (CLT) and Certified Production Technician (CPT), which have been accredited by the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC).

Students will be provided internship opportunities in the second half of the school year, which can lead to immediate career opportunities upon graduating from high school.

Said Superintendent of Schools Stephen Yurchak: “In recent years, the phrase, ‘College- and Career-Readiness,’ has been echoed throughout the state, but oftentimes, college seems to be the primary focus for schools and families.

Our goal is to make sure that every student who enters our school district will graduate with a post-secondary pathway to success. We are all very proud of this group of students and know that they will be very successful after high school.”

Steven Bello, a senior at North Arlington High School, who is enrolled in the Early Career Program said: “I’m happy that this program was put into place because it’s going to give me a chance to establish a career right after high school.

All women age 65 and older are advised to undergo a “dualenergy X-ray absorptiometry” (DXA) scan, which measures bone-mineral density and shows whether osteoporosis is present. If so, medications, dietary changes, supplements, and weight-bearing exercise can help strengthen bones. However, effective treatment will obviously be delayed if women age 65 and older neglect to be screened for the bone-thinning disease. This appears to be a problem in that recent analysis of the medical records of more than 50,000 women reveals that nearly half of those age 65 and older had not had a DXA scan.

Younger women are advised to get screened if they have risk factors for osteoporosis (such as a history

of previous fractures).

He was a daily communicant at St. Stephen’s Church, Kearny.

John was the husband of Margaret (nee Mason) Berko and formerly married to Nancy Carole. The father of John T. Berko (Debbie), Annmarie Tesarck (Fred), Michele-Lee Shapiro (Steven), Michael J. Berko, Mary M. Berko and James F. Berko, he was the brother of James P. Berko (Linda) and is also survived by his grandchildren Jonathon, Makayla, Bethany, Rachel, Joshua, Starr and Parker and his mother-in-law Helen (nee Fitzgerald) Mason.

Future firefighters?

On Saturday Nov. 3, the Harrison Fire Department FMBA Local 22, with Steve Fostek of the Junior Firefighter Day Committee, hosted its third annual Junior Firefighter Day. There was a smoke house for the kids to climb through, face painting, a bounce house, a hose station and fire gear to try on. There were even prizes that were donated that were raffled off. The Firefighters are already planning next year’s event, tentatively scheduled for Oct. 26, 2019.

Once the clerk was down, it was then that Shahzad saw, on a surveillance-video monitor, that the coworker was down, but he didn’t know the masked men had guns at that point. So Shahzad ran to the front of the store to check on his employee — and met a man with a shotgun charging toward him. At that moment, Shahzad said: “I sort of froze, looking at him, that he’s approaching me.”

As he got closer, the gunman then pointed the shotgun at his chest, and Shahzad says he grabbed the barrel of the gun and flipped it toward the gunman’s throat.

Shahzad says at this point, he thought he was about to be killed.

The gunman took his wallet and all of his credit cards and ID. He then made Shahzad walk to the cash register. Only to find it empty. The gunmen then ran toward Belgrove Drive, with about $1,000 in cash, with one shouting, “let’s go, let’s go,” Shahzad said.

At this point, the coworker got up from the floor and Shahzad realized he had a gash on his head from being pistol whipped. One of the men called 911 — and the Kearny Police Department responded immediately along with an ambulance.

Shahzad was transported to St. Michael’s Medical Center, Newark, where he was treated and released for the gash on his head caused by the pistol-

During the 18-month investigation, law-enforcement officers recovered various amounts of the stolen merchandise including 36 pallets of Hershey Syrup with an approximate wholesale value of $120,000; a shipment of clothing with an approximate wholesale value of $300,000; and a shipment of waffle sandwiches with an approximate wholesale value of $40,000.

King credited members of the KPD and the HCPO’s Special Investigations Unit with the arrests.

“These arrests are the culmination of an intensive investigation spanning multiple law-enforcement agencies. I am extremely proud of the work done by members of the Kearny Police Department Detective Bureau and their collaboration with county, state and federal agencies to bring this to a successful conclusion,” the chief said.

King also credited members of the New Jersey State Police, the United States Postal Inspection Service, Homeland Security Investigations and the Real Time Crime Center with their assistance in the investigation.

But before he left the hospital, Shahzad says he got an alert from his bank that the gunmen had attempted to purchase sneakers at nike.com, but Citibank alerted him to the charges, canceled the transaction and then the credit card itself.

“I think they are local and live in Kearny,” he said, noting how quickly they got somewhere to make the unauthorized footwear purchase.

Shahzad says the Conoco station, just across Belgrove Drive on Passaic Avenue, had a similar gunpoint robbery a few weeks earlier where the gunmen also fled northeast onto Belgrove Drive toward the Kearny General Apartments. He speculated the pair of gunmen could be the same in both robberies.

“I hope they catch these thugs,” Shahzad said.

Meanwhile, two police sources say Shahzad has not fully cooperated with the KPD’s investigation. He was scheduled to be interviewed by a detective Friday afternoon, Dec. 14, but both sources say Shahzad did not show up at KPD Headquarters on Laurel Avenue.

In fact, police only found out about the suspected sneaker buy after viewing The Observer’s live interview with Shahzad that Friday afternoon, according to a police source.

Shahzad, in a text message to The Observer at around 5 p.m., Dec. 14, says a KPD detective and he were going to meet that day at 10 p.m., but it is not immediately clear whether that happened.
