Retired at-large cop charged with Sandy fraud: Ocean County prosecutor

at-large, likely in Florida, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer recently announced.

of John F. Bishop, 54, who retired from the HPD more than a decade ago, was issued by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office after it is believed he bilked over $75,000 each from six Sandy victims.

An investigation began after each of the homeowners Bishop allegedly bilked filed police reports accusing Bishop of taking the money for repairs and failing to finish them.

The OCPO, meanwhile, also arrested Paul Rueda, 46, a former Kearny resident, on similar charges, according to the OCPO. It is believed Bishop and Rueda had some sort of business relationship, reports say.

The OCPO says Bishop, who is believed to be living in Florida, reportedly took payments from six victims, from 2012 (immediately

after Sandy) through 2015 for repair work — and he never completed the work.

A source tells The Observer that Bishop, who has not yet been located by authorities, is believed to be working at an Orlando-based amusement park as a security guard.

His last-known address was in Celebration, Florida. Celebration is approximately 22 miles southwest of Orlando.

Another former Harrison police officer, who asked not to be named, says he isn’t one bit surprised by the news Bishop is wanted for allegedly bilking Sandy victims.

“I knew him when he was a cop and he was a creep then,” the retired officer said. “None of this is shocking to hear. The Bishop I remember had always had a hard time doing the right thing, so all of this — it makes sense.”

A Linked-In page says Bishop operated a construction company called John Paul Builders.

Bishop also lists himself as a building inspector with National Building Inspectors from August 2009 to the present.

Leadership council will allow East Newark students’ voices to be heard They’re the new young guns in town and they’re ready to fight for what they believe in so just watch your step.

Fifteen East Newark seventh- and eighth-graders — 13 girls and two boys — have taken on the heavy mantle of simultaneously defending and challenging their peers.

As the newly-appointed members of the East Newark Public School’s Leadership Council, they’ll be busy setting the agenda for what’s to come as the balance of the school year unfolds.

They won’t be doing it alone, of course. They’ll be closely advised by School Superintendent/Principal Richard Corbett in setting and attaining goals.

“I see [the council] as an alternative to student governments, which don’t always have great influence,” Corbett said.

In this case, he said, “I want to attract students truly interested in becoming leaders and I have no doubt that’s the case with the kids on our council. They are bright, hard-working, compassionate and they want to do good things.”

The council, Corbett said, is on a mission to nail three objectives: working toward designation as a National Blue Ribbon School, measured through academic achievement; designation as a National School of Character and improving the school’s “climate and culture.”

Ultimately, all three are intertwined through elements in common.

Council members are subdivided into committees working on action plans related to each of the three goals and the committees are meeting at least three times a week after school —

Eighth-grader Iyana Nazario, 13, wants to “make sure people feel safe” at school and that students are “not afraid to speak up” about things that may be bothering them.

If they’re being bullied, Iyana said, “they should tell a grown-up and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Technology should be enlisted as a tool to help students deal with sensitive issues, suggested seventhgrader Nicole Moscoso, 12. “Maybe we can get an app where kids can talk anonymously and honestly about things,” she said.

In committee sessions, Nicole said, council members have also discussed “changing the way we do [school-wide P.A.] announcements — maybe we can boost students’ feelings with inspiring quotes. And we can talk about current events and the weather.”

There’s also been talk about blending kindergarten kids into more school-wide activities such as arranging for them to fabricate holiday stockings, noted seventhgrader Cemila Saenz, 12.

Not to mention getting the school to sponsor field trips, some involving education and others, fun, council secretary Victoria Gomes, a 14-year-old eighth-grader, said.

All council members proudly wear special T-shirts which bear this intriguing message: “Prove Them Wrong.” What’s that about?

Don’t let scams fool you this holiday season

hen Adly Baseluos sent a $400 check from his non-profit organization to a young local girl who attends George Mason University, of Fairfax, Virginia, it never quite hit him that the money wouldn’t get to the university. But that’s what happened. The check, made payable to George Mason University, was somehow intercepted in the mail — and cashed, despite being made out to a public university.

The case has been investigated by both the Kearny and North Arlington police departments, according to Baseluos, and a hearing is scheduled in North Arlington Municipal Court at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 13.

Just how the check was intercepted — and how a bank actually cashed it — is unclear for now. (We’ll cover the court proceedings.) But with all this in mind, we thought this would be a good time to remind residents about other varied and assorted scams people face, especially during the holiday season.

The Nutley Police Department’s Public Information Officer is Det. Sgt. Anthony Montanari.

This time of year, he sends out warnings to Nutley residents. But his warnings, via Chief Thomas Strumolo, are appropriate for residents everywhere. These are appropriate for those who shop online for Christmas and Hanukkah presents.

Among the suggestions and warnings: • If there’s a chance you’ll be away when a package is to be delivered, be sure to request signature upon delivery.

• Request deliveries be made when someone will be home and available to receive packages and bring them inside.

• Request a neighbor accept delivery if you won’t be home.

• Multi-unit dwellings

should designate someone to accept packages on behalf of neighbors.

• Install a homesurveillance system. They’re much cheaper than they once were — and are a great tool to help police identify possible suspects.

• Track your package so you’ll know when it’s expected to be delivered.

• Let the delivery company know where to leave the package — preferably in a location out of view from passers-by.

• Have your packages sent to a retailer that accepts deliveries from UPS and FedEx. Or, have them sent to the Post Office for pickup.

• Never leave packages unattended on stoops or porches for a long period of time.

If you shop locally or at malls, never leave packages in your car. Follow these steps to ensure you’re not a theft victim: • Never leave your car unattended whilst it’s running. It only takes a few second for a thief to steal a running car or to swipe items left in a car.

• Always lock all doors and close all windows.

• Never “hide” keys inside a vehicle.

• Removal all valuables from vehicles, including mobile phones, GPS units, tablets, etc.

• Keep all holiday packages/purchases in the car’s trunk — never leave them inside the car and within view.

• Always try to park in well-lit areas and/or near visible surveillance cameras.

• Be sure to activate (if you have one) your car’s alarm — and keep vehicle-locator subscriptions active.

• Always keep your vehicle’s registration and proof of insurance on you — never leave either in the glove compartment.

• If it appears your car has been broken into, before opening doors, trunk, etc., and before leaving the scene, call police first to file a theft report.

Progress being made with HIV & AIDS, but it won’t be enough until both are fully eradicated

FEW DAYS AGO, DEC. 1 to be precise, it was World AIDS Day. The first celebration of its kind took place in 1998 and has happened every Dec. 1 since.

The global agency that came up with the concept did so with the hope of educating the world about this hideous, deadly disease that has affected millions of people — and their friends and families — for 40 some-odd years.

There are some staggering statistics about AIDS — and HIV — you should know: • More than 1.1 million people have HIV in the United States. Of that group, 1 in 7 are unaware they’re infected.

• Three years ago, 38,500 Americans were infected with HIV. • Since 2010, fortunately, the infection rate among Americans has dropped by 8%.

• HIV diagnoses are not evenly distributed across states and regions. People in southern states accounted for more than half of new HIV diagnoses in 2016, while making up 38% of the nation’s population.

• The black and Latino

population continues to be the most affected by the disease.

African Americans represent 12% of the U.S. population, but accounted for 44% (17,528) of new HIV diagnoses in 2016.

African Americans have the highest rate of HIV diagnoses compared to other races and ethnicities.

Latinos represent about 18% of the U.S. population, but accounted for 25% (9,766) of new HIV diagnoses in 2016.

While many of these statistics seem staggering, they’re substantially better than they were just a decade ago in this country. And, considering that in Africa alone there are nearly 26 million people living with HIV, America’s numbers

are by far and large better.

Yet we still live in a world where this disease continues to kill. There just isn’t enough discussion, anymore, about these diseases. And the truth of the matter is, though it’s not eradicated yet, universal precautions — in scenarios surrounding the ways the disease is spread —could eliminate the disease fully.

Bottom line: Not enough people take HIV and AIDS seriously, and if they did, there’d be no need for a cure.

Still, considering that having HIV is no longer a death sentence as it was in the 1980s and 1990s, it leaves room for hope.

But we cannot be satisfied — as individuals or as a nation — until the disease is eradicated fully. And when that day comes — let’s hope it’s sooner than later — there will be cause for celebration, as Dec. 1 will become just another, ordinary day.

And instead of reminders of how awful HIV & AIDS truly are, we can then look back at how awful HIV & AIDS once WERE … and will never again be, forever more.

Torch from Mexico will stop in Kearny

S

ome three decades ago, Gabriel Lucero’s grandfather ran a textile warehouse in Kearny on Bergen Avenue and it provided a workplace opportunity for many fellow Mexican-Americans then living in New York City.

Ultimately, the burden of traveling back and forth across the Hudson River became too onerous and those employees began moving permanently to new homes in West Hudson, Lucero said.

Today, there is a community of several hundred Mexican-Americans who have put down roots by some estimates.

In September 2016, coinciding with the celebration of Mexican Independence Day, the Grupo Civico Poblano De Hudson was formed to represent the interests of Mexican immigrants to the U.S. Ivan Rios, an East Newark resident whose mother, Doris Amigon is president of the group, said its goal is “to make the point that MexicanAmericans have the same rights as everyone else.”

Its slogan is “to be messengers for the dignity of our community divided by the border,” he said.

Rios, who was born in the Ironbound section of Newark, said his mother came from Puebla, Mexico, “looking for a new life. It was hard everywhere in Mexico because of the corruption and danger from gangs.”

Other officers in the group are treasurer Jackie Domingues, of Kearny; and secretary Lucia Flores, also of Kearny.

The West Hudson Mexican

community has deep Catholic roots and has established a presence at St. Cecilia Church in Kearny where members attend Mass.

It is that longstanding attachment to the Catholic tradition in the homeland that has prompted the group’s members to align themselves with a religious commemorative event that has been going on for the past 20 years.

This holiday season will mark the second time that the West Hudson group itself will be participating in that event – as part of a pilgrimage carrying a ceremonial torch as a way of paying tribute to Our Lady of Guadalupe, “the mother saint of Mexico.”

On Sept. 9, pilgrims began their journey, carrying the symbolic torch, from the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City, crossing several states in Mexico, arriving Oct. 23 in New Laredo Tamaulipas, then crossing the border into Laredo, Texas.

With each stop-over, a new set of pilgrims takes up the torch, continuing north.

The itinerary schedule calls for the torch to arrive in Newark on Dec. 11, then make its way across the Clay Street Bridge into Harrison to Town Hall that same day, proceed to St. Anthony’s Church in East Newark, then to the bridge separating Kearny, Harrison and East Newark on Kearny Avenue at 7 p.m. and then, to St. Cecilia’s Church, 120 Kearny Ave., for a 7:30 p.m.

Mass and vigil through 2 a.m.

As explained by a statement issued by the group, “This is an event that seeks to promote friendship, unity and solidarity among Mexican and American community groups all along its path, and provide

a symbolic bridge for families separated by the U.S.-Mexico border.”

Following the Kearny stop-over, the procession is to continue Dec. 12 with a 6 a.m. crossing of the George Washington Bridge into New York, to Central Park, and then, for a final stop, at the United Nations.

Members of the MexicanAmerican communities from the region are encouraged to attend these events.

KPD: Serial-burglary suspect nabbed

On Nov. 16, Kearny detectives set up surveillance in Harrison on a Kia Spectra they had previously identified as a getaway car in recent Kearny apartment burglaries.

During this surveillance, police said, they followed the vehicle into Newark, where they observed its driver, James Sanchez, 48, of Harrison, ap-

parently purchase heroin on the street. He then drove to his job on Schuyler Avenue.

Upon reaching his workplace, the detectives confronted Sanchez and reportedly recovered seven wax folds of heroin stamped “Junkie Love.”

Sanchez was arrested and brought to KPD headquarters where, after further investigation, he was also charged in connection with the burglar-

Sanchez was also charged with criminal mischief, possession of burglar tools and possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia.

He was transferred to the Hudson County Jail. *** Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following: Nov. 19 At 5:47 p.m., Officers Alan Stickno, Anthony Nunez and Ryan Brady and Capt. Dave Feldhan responded to Archibald Terrace on a report of an aggravated assault. There, they found a 38-year-old male resident of the block with a swollen hand.

The victim reported that, while walking his dog, he pulled on its leash to prevent it from going up to a neighbor.

Another neighbor, John Matos, 51, allegedly took umbrage at this perceived canine mistreatment and rained a barrage of insults and expletives on the victim while following him back to his mother’s house.

When the victim took shelter in that house and threatened to call the cops, he said Matos backed off. However, a few minutes later, when the victim — believing the coast was clear — emerged from the residence, Matos allegedly ran at him, swinging a golf club.

The victim said he blocked a strike that was destined for his head and took the brunt of it with his hand.

Matos was arrested, charged with aggravated assault, weapons offenses and making terroristic threats, and was sent to the county jail. Police said the victim refused medical aid at the scene. *** At 10:14 p.m., Officers Derek Hemphill, Nicole Williams and Andre Fernandes were called to Walmart, where store security had detained three women: Camille HarleyBrown, 23, of East Orange; Anneesh Robinson, 39, and Josephine Robinson, 23, both of Newark.

Security said the trio had concealed some merchandise inside handbags and, on other goods, had affixed price tags for less-expensive items. The ladies reportedly rang up a bill for $103.33 on merchandise (clothing, plus three boxes of Milk Duds) worth $417.68. All

three (the women, not the Milk Duds) were charged with shoplifting and conspiracy.

Incident to arrest, the officers reportedly found that Josephine Robinson was in possession of Visa cards belonging to three other people and Social Security cards belonging to an additional two people.

She was further charged with three counts of credit-card theft and two counts of theft of property lost, mislaid or delivered by mistake.

Thanks to New Jersey›s bail reform law, all three suspects were released on summonses.

Nov. 23 At 11:08 p.m., Officer Ryan Stickno and Sgt. Mike Gonzalez responded to Walmart, where this time security had detained a man reported to be a serial store-property-vandal (and maybe a social-media-star wannabe?)

Security reported that the man, Moustafa Toure, 21, of East Orange, had entered Walmart on at least three occasions since August and then either he or a friend video-recorded him knocking over displays and/or destroying merchandise worth a total of more than $500.

Police said the officers reviewed one of the videos, posted to a social-media site, which showed Toure enter the store, select a watermelon from a display and smash it on the floor.

(Hilarious, right?)

Toure was arrested and booked at the county jail on charges of criminal mischief and shoplifting.

Paszkiewicz shares Girls’ Institute experiences The Woman’s Club of Arlington (WCA) met recently, and in addition to the club’s annual New Member Rally and meeting, Kearny High School senior Rebekah Paszkiewicz, who was awarded a place at the Girls’ Career

Institute this summer, spoke.

The club has a long history of sponsoring outstanding high school female juniors for attendance at Girls’ Career Institute (GCI), formerly called Girls Citizenship Institute. It is an annual

program at Douglass College which was founded by the clubwomen of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs (NJSFWC).

Paszkiewicz shared some of her experiences from Douglass, including career

workshops she attended — that opened her eyes to new career possibilities — the friends she made from throughout New Jersey as well as the fun she had experiencing dorm life.

The club’s program also

included decorating bibs for residents of Alaris on Belgrove Drive. Members provided donations for a birthday basket for these residents and brought candy for the Scouts of Unit 305’s trunk or treat.

LPD arrests parolee with illegal gun

The Lyndhurst Police Department got an illicit gun off its streets on Nov. 30.

Det. Vincent Auteri, the department’s publicinformation officer, says that day, Officer Joseph White was on patrol on Wall Street when he saw a Nissan Maxima coming toward him in the opposite

direction. The car was reportedly in violation of a motor-vehicle statute.

Auteri says the driver pulled into a parking lot of a Polito Avenue business, seemingly trying to avoid being pulled over, where White found it parked, haphazardly, among other vehicles.

When White found the driver, Vincent ChanGuillen, 28, of Elizabeth, he told White he was looking

for something to drink at the Polito Avenue office building.

As this was happening, Auteri says dispatch told White that Chan-Guillen was driving on a suspended license and was wanted by the Elizabeth Police Department on traffic offenses. White also learned Chan-Guillen was on “active parole.”

Meanwhile, the license plate on the Maxima came back “not on file,” and the vehicle-identification number came back to the car’s former owner.

Police say Chan-Guillen reportedly bought the car from the woman, but never titled or registered it in his own name.

Though he initially refused to allow White to search his car, ChanGuillen ultimately relented before police needed to get a search warrant — and during a search of the trunk, White found a large bundle of $100 bills and a

loaded .45-caliber handgun.

Chan-Guillen was charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and a charge of being a “certain person not to have weapons.” He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail without bail, according to Auteri.

The LPD credited the State Department of Parole, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and the LPD’s Sgt. John Castiglia, Det. Rich Holicki and Officers Chris Cuneo, Matt Giunta and Mark Rivera for assisting in the investigation.

Harrison’s Huseinovic enjoys great freshman year at Pace When Dustin Huseinovic decided to take a football scholarship to play for Pace University, the former Harrison High School didn’t know what the future held.

Huseinovic had a brilliant career at Harrison, competing in both football and baseball, earning All-North Jersey Interscholastic Conference honors in both sports.

His talents enabled Huseinovic to earn Observer Male Athlete of the Year honors, becoming the second straight Blue Tide athlete to receive the year-end award.

But playing college football was going to be a big step for a kid coming from a small high school.

And there were no guarantees about getting on the field.

“I knew that I had to work hard in training camp,” Huseinovic said.

“I knew that if I worked hard, I could get some playing time. The coach-

es didn’t promise me anything. I had to work.”

Huseinovic was a standout at any position he played for the Blue Tide. He lined up at running back, slot receiver and wide receiver on offense, while playing linebacker, cornerback and safety on defense, displaying his incredible versatility.

But in college, there had to be more of a stable situation, concentrating on one position. The coaches at Pace believed Huseinovic’s future was as a defensive back, so there he played.

“I knew I would have to play defensive back and I was happy with that,” Huseinovic said. “I just like playing football, so I was happy just being on the team. I knew that playing in college was going to be harder.”

By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com It’s the fourth year of Tom McGuire’s tenure as head boys’ basketball coach at Lyndhurst High School and his eighth overall as a head coach, including his stint at his alma mater Queen of Peace.

And for all intents and purposes, this should be McGuire’s best year as a head coach, considering the amount of talent on the

Golden Bears’ roster.

“I think we’ve turned the corner,” said McGuire, who guided his team to a 13-12 record last season and a trip to the Bergen County Jamboree. “I think we’ve changed the culture in the entire program.”

McGuire mentioned that the Lyndhurst junior varsity program also had a better than .500 season last year and the freshman team won 20 games.

“The kids are doing a great

job of turning the program around,” McGuire said. “We would really like to host a state tournament game this year. I don’t think it’s out of the question.”

The Golden Bears will also play in the upcoming Fort Lee Christmas Tournament against much bigger teams.

“We want to challenge ourselves,” McGuire said. “We are going to prepare for our league schedule, which will

Senior Brian Podolski is back for another basketball campaign after a brilliant football season, leading the Golden Bears to nine wins on the gridiron.

Podolski is a 6-foot-2 doeverything for the Golden Bears without a true position.

“He’s a point forward,” McGuire said of Podolski’s stature as a hybrid. “He handles the ball well. He does everything we need. He really has an indispensible role with our team. He is doing a great job of leading the team. He’s doing the exact same thing as he did in football. He knows where everyone is supposed to be on the floor. He’s like having a coach on the court.”

Podolski averaged seven points, five rebounds and

four assists per game last year. Those numbers are likely to go up this year.

John Rodriguez is a 6-foot2 forward who electrified everyone last season when he went for a school-record 51 points in a win over Harrison.

“When you score 51 in a game, it means you can score,” McGuire said. “Any way you write it, it’s a big number. I think John is taking more of a leadership role with this team. He has the ability to take games over.”

Rodriguez averaged 14 points per game last season as a sophomore.

“I think it can go up to like 19 or 20 a game this year,” McGuire said. “He’s very talented. Not everyone we play has his talent. He can go a long way this year. We just have to get John his shots.”

McGuire said that Rodriguez has always been better than a 50 percent shooter from the floor.

Senior Benny Franchino is also coming off a solid football season. The standout

receiver and placekicker is a fine basketball player.

Franchino is a 5-foot-9 guard.

“He does a little bit of everything,” McGuire said of Franchino. “He takes it upon himself to guard the other team’s best player. He’s our best defender and may be the best defender in our league.

He’s a three-year starter who will play a big role.”

Paul Cimicata is another member of that state sectional finalist football team.

The 6-foot-2 Cimicata, an Observer Athlete of the Week honoree last month, dealt with a shoulder injury last basketball season.

“He’s a big body who is a tenacious rebounder,” McGuire said. “He plays bigger than his size. We need him to give us good minutes.”

Another former Athlete of the Week is baseball standout Frankie Venezia, who has rejoined the basketball team after two years away.

“He’s been a pleasant surprise,” McGuire said of the 6-foot-2 senior Venezia,

McGuire said. “He’s a passoriented point guard. But he can shoot the ball.”

Sophomore Adam Venezia, Frankie’s younger brother, is also a key member of the Golden Bears’ rotation. The 6-foot-1 Adam Venezia plays several roles for the Golden Bears off the bench.

“He’s an energetic player,” McGuire said. “He was so good during tryouts that we had to have him on the varsity. And he’s going to me a main rotation guy. His shot is improving. He’s just an athletic kid.”

Joe Nichols is a 6-foot-1 junior forward who has shown incredible improvement.

“He’s going to get a chance to play varsity this year,” McGuire said of Nichols. “He has a very good jump shot.

He’s also a good rebounder with a nose for the ball.”

The Golden Bears open up the season Dec. 14 against Ridgefield.

“I think it can be argued that this is my best team,” McGuire said. “It’s an older team with a little bit of experience. The team got better with Frankie coming back and Billy transferring.

I think that makes us all that much better.”

He’s one of the best shooters I’ve ever coached. He gets his shot off so quickly. He’s going to be a big factor for us.”

Das averaged 10 points per game last year.

“It could get up to 15 this year,” McGuire said.

Senior Billy McMann is a 5-foot-11 guard who has transferred to Lyndhurst from Christ the King in Newark. He has to sit out the necessary 30 days required by the NJSIAA’s transfer rule, but once McMann becomes eligible, he will play a major role in the Golden Bears’ rotation.

Huseinovic learned one thing almost instantly.

“The speed of the game was intense,” Huseinovic said. “It was all so much faster than high school. I just had to get used to the speed of it all.”

Huseinovic quickly established himself as a strong

interception.

In one late season win over Southern Connecticut State, Huseinovic had 11 tackles, an almost ungodly total for a safety. His performance that week earned him the Northeast 10 Defensive Player of the Week.

Huseinovic helped the Setters post a 7-3 record, the program’s best record since moving up to the NCAA Division II ranks a decade ago.

And Huseinovic’s performance was certainly not overlooked by the opposition

Not bad for a kid from Harrison.

“I’m really happy with the results,” Huseinovic said.

“I’m glad that I put the work in. I wouldn’t say I’m surprised, because I worked so hard.”

Huseinovic was asked what the main qualities he possessed to succeed on the college level.

“I would have to say my aggressiveness and my football IQ,” Huseinovic said. “I think they’re the main things that helped me.”

Huseinovic said that he was pleased to earn all-league and all-rookie honors.

“I’m just way thankful,”

Huseinovic said. “It’s a great honor to get acknowledged.

It means a lot to me. I’m very thankful to be in the company of other players who made the all-league team.”

Now that the season is over, Huseinovic can start to plan for the next three seasons. He also knows in his heart that he has a bright future – and two more years of playing with his fellow Hudson County brother in Fernandez.

“Harrison is one of my best friends on the team,” Huseinovic said. “We’re the Hudson County connection.”

Huseinovic has a permanent role with the Setters.

The uncertainty that he experienced back in July and August is long gone.

“I think getting the taste of success definitely helps me,” Huseinovic said. “I can now become an even better player if I work on the things that I can improve upon.”

Huseinovic has already begun preparations for the future.

“I’m doing more film watching,” Huseinovic said.

“I can increase studying other teams. I also definitely want to get bigger and stronger in the offseason. We went 7-3 and lost a couple of games late. Next year, I think we have a shot to win the conference. That would be great.”

Needless to say, the kid from Harrison, the reigning Observer Male Athlete of the Year is doing pretty well for himself, thank you very much.

“It was definitely a great season,” Huseinovic said. “I definitely had a lot of fun.”

Chances are that the coaching staff at Pace University had a lot of fun watching Dustin Huseinovic develop into an all-league defensive back. And the people in Harrison are truly enjoying their native son becoming a star.

Nutley boys’ basketball team looks to be improved

There’s a lot of optimism in the gym at Nutley High School these days, stemming from the Maroon Raider boys’ basketball team.

And rightly so.

Considering that the Maroon Raiders won 12 games last year and welcomes back most of that team this season.

It means that the Maroon Raiders are talented and experienced, traits that encourage veteran head coach Bob Harbison.

“They’re not only working harder and getting better, but they’re more mature,” Harbison said. “They’re a much more attentive group. They’re all better players. We have some decent players coming off the bench and that makes us a better team. The kids are working hard and we’re

averaged close to 16 points per game last year.

“A shooter is a shooter,” Harbison said of Higgins. “I do think it’s on the other kids to make sure Marty gets his points. We’re going to jump n his back and let him carry us through. He’s going to have a fine season.”

And barring injury, Higgins should reach the 1,000-point plateau sometime this season, joining his father in that illustrious club. The elder Higgins played basketball at the University of Maine in the early 1990s.

Tears are a complex synthesis of water, mucins, oil, electrolytes, and bacteria-fighting substances that moisturize and oxygenate the cornea and clear away debris. and distribute the ball. I think our success will be on whether he makes the other players better. He could be all around the most skilled player I’ve ever had. If he understands that he has to make the others better, then we will be fine.

We need Jordan to run the team more than he needs to score points.”

Senior Eli Acosta is the team’s starting power forward. The 6-foot-5 Acosta is one of the best athletes in the school, playing football and holding the school’s high jump record.

“He’s very good around the rim,” Harbison said. “He is also a good mid-range jump shooter. He’s an athletic kid and maybe the most athletic kid we’ve ever had. We need Eli to rebound and defend.”

Aidan Ozdemir is a 6-foot-3 junior forward.

“He’s a hard worker who plays tough inside,” Harbison said. “He’s a strong rebounder. We’re hoping to get more out of that position this year.”

Senior Jason Nazaruk is a 5-foot-9 guard.

“Jason is a tough kid who is very quick,” Harbison said.

“He can shoot it. He has a knack for scoring.”

Chris Kruse is a 6-foot-1 junior guard.

“Chris is an athletic kid,”

Harbison said of Kruse, who also plays soccer. “He has great hands and runs the floor well. He could be our best onthe-ball defender.”

Quincy Gilliard is a 6-foot-2 senior forward.

“Quincy can really shoot it,” Harbison said. “He can pop out and knock down shots.

He can shoot the three (point shot). He’s strong with the ball and can give us quality minutes.”

Mickey O’Brien is a 5-foot-9 senior guard who also serves as the backup to Swann at point guard.

“He’s a tough kid who goes after the ball,” Harbison said.

“He distributes the ball well.”

Tyler Dick is a 6-foot-1 junior forward.

“Tyler is very athletic,” Harbison said. “He will find time on the court in spots. He will help us.”

Louis Greiss is a 5-foot-7 junior guard.

“He’s become a pretty good player,” Harbison said. “He’s perhaps the quickest kid on the floor.”

Nick Schroeder is a 5-foot-11 freshman guard who will stick with the Nutley varsity.

“We had to keep him up with us, because he can really shoot it,” Harbison said. “I like what he does. He’s going to be a really good player for

us.”

The Maroon Raiders open their season Dec. 14 when they play host to Newark Tech.

They will also play in the Kearny Christmas Tournament once again this season.

Needless to say, it should be an excellent season for the Maroon Raiders.

“I’m pretty excited about it,” Harbison said. “I just like the whole thing, the way they play hard, the atmosphere around the team, the way they work. I just like it.”

The optimism is oozing maroon.

Festival led by Minnesota man with Kearny roots

By Ron Leir Special to The Observer For the past eight years, Kearny’s annual Christmas holiday festival, culminating in the tree lighting, has been hosted by the Man from Minnesota.

Joseph Ferriero, a homegrown Kearny product, now lives in the North Star State where he serves as principal of St. Mary’s Catholic School in Morris, Minnesota, population 5,297.

It’s from that rural outpost that Ferriero, 38, conducts the business of remotely planning the hourlong concert portion of the festival, except for the day of the event when he returns to Kearny to check on last-minute details and to emcee the show.

Second only to the town’s Independence Day celebration in attendance, the wintertime event has grown in popularity in recent years, expanding

from an appearance by Santa and tree lighting to a full-fledged musical extravaganza plus civic groups and vendors in Town Hall Park.

This year marked the first time the town has gotten calls from outsiders asking if they can come and perform, said Linda D’Isa, special events coordinator for the Kearny Urban Enterprise Zone program, which sponsors the fest with help from local businesses.

“The town brought in some big companies to do stuff and it became quite costly, so they shopped around for something a little more affordable.”

Even so, this year’s fest was budgeted at $22,000, according to UEZ coordinator John Peneda.

Some of that, he said, is underwritten by private donations covering the cost of the tents and activities in Town Hall Park.

Ferriero expanded his role with the fest by offering help with lighting and then, when the person designated to host the concert production couldn’t make it, “I slid right in,” he said.

Planning for the big event starts in earnest in the fall, said Ferriero, who credits his “super organized” boss, D’Isa, for helping facilitate his job. “Having contacts with all the groups performing makes it easier for me to reach out to people,’’ he explained.

“The show becomes a living, breathing situation from that point on,” he said. “There’s a big team of people involved, including the town’s DPW and police, and they meet in person pretty frequently to talk about logistics. For me, it’s a lot of emails and phone calls keeping connected

with everyone.”

His responsibilities focus on writing a host narrative – which includes a pitch for “patronizing local mom and pop stores” – plus arranging the order and timing of the “talent” – dance groups, school groups, etc. – together with key production aspects like lighting, sound, stage managing, getting someone to arrange performers get to the right spots on time – all fitting within the 60 minutes allotted for the concert and tree lighting.

And since this will be the first and only time the outdoor “stage” is being set up, the performers are going on cold – not just because of the wintry weather. “There really is not a rehearsal,” he said. “We expect the performers to come ready – they can rehearse before, on their own.”

On the day of the event, Ferriero is on site, shepherding on his production team a few hours before showtime.

“I’m running around with my clipboard making sure we’re ready for the start of the marathon,” he said.

As the clock wound down to zero hour last week, Ferriero confessed to being “a little terrified” because “this one is bigger than we’ve ever had before.”

He was 80.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Mulligan Funeral Home, Harrison.

His ashes will be entombed at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

John was a Cold War veteran who served in the United States Army for three years.

He was honorably discharged in 1965 and was very proud of his service to our country.

John was predeceased by his long-time companion Helen Mianecki, of Harrison; his parents Joseph and Mae Bouquet; a sister Florence; and his brother Joseph. He is survived by Helen’s daughters Regina Goham and Marcella Doonan; and grandchildren Lisa White, Linda Eosso, Stephen Goham, Debbie Doonan, Patty Forsberg and Barbara Caprara. John also leaves behind a multitude of loved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grand-nephews and great-grandchildren.

John was a kind, caring man. He was a history buff who loved to read, and he loved all things electronic and innovative. John loved Christmas, as well as spending time with family, and most especially, all of his family’s children. He had a good sense of humor and was a very generous man. He will be dearly missed.

Louis served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a recipient of several medals of honor including the Purple Heart. He was the owner-operator of Able Doors Overhead Door Company and also worked at the Cookie Factory.

He was a bartender at the Harrison/East Newark Elks for many years as a second job.

He is survived by his wife Michelle; his children Joshua Clark, Kelly Mooney and Christopher Clark; his grandson Michael Clark; and his siblings Melissa Timmons, John Clark, Richard Clark and Katherine Doffont.

He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his sister Veronica Maiorana (September 2018) and his son, Timothy Clark (May 2018).

22 New program will help elderlies, disabled who live alone in Nutley THE OBSERVER | WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2018

The Township of Nutley had created a program that will check on the well-being and safety of the senior citizen and disabled population who live alone. Commissioner Alphonse Petracco made the announcement last week.

Petracco says that since maintaining independence can be increasingly difficult as people age, Operation Reassurance will enable the elderly and infirmed to maintain independence through a daily check-in call.

Seniors and those with disabilities who live alone and would like to

apply for the program may call 973-284-4930 and leave their name, address and phone number for an application, which will be dropped off.

“Operation Reassurance will help to save lives,” Petracco said.

“There are many senior residents who have lived in Nutley for many years and would prefer to stay in their own homes as they age. This program helps to make that possible.”

The program is free to all Nutley senior citizens and those who are disabled.

Once an application

is submitted, they’ll call 973-284-4930 between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. every day to say they’re OK or in need of assistance.

“If the police department does not hear from the applicant during the designated times, we will call you,” Petracco said.

“If there is no answer at that home, a police officer will go to the applicant’s house to make sure everything is OK.” Volunteers are available to help those who need assistance completing applications.

Continued from Page 1 advanced to stronger drugs and subsequently overdosed, so she is opposed to the state’s current move to legalize the recreational use and sale of marijuana.

But Councilman Steven Rovell responded that even if Belleville were to adopt a law forbidding those types of enterprises in the township, it would be a futile gesture.

“If the state does something [to clear the way for legal use and sale of the substance], our ordinance gets cast aside,” Rovell said.

For that reason, Rovell said, “trying to supercede the state is something we can’t do [because] it’s all going to be thrown out.”

A tentative note of dissent came from Councilwoman Marie Strumolo Burke who suggested that, nonetheless, “we should take a stand” on the issue, meaning to oppose the state’s plan.

However, she got no takers.

Later, Frantantoni said she has gotten information from the legislative office of State Sen. Ronald Rice, whose district includes Belleville, that even if the state adopts the proposed marijuana law, there is nothing stopping municipalities from taking steps to stop businesses from springing up there.

Rice, a former law enforcement officer, has made known his opposition to the bill now under consideration by state lawmakers.

The Observer tried asking the Office of the New Jersey Attorney General if the point made by Rovell had any substance to it but was told by office spokesman Leland Moore that the AG would “not comment.”

So, as a next step, The Observer called The New Jersey State League of Municipalities, whose staff counsel Frank Marshall said that the current legislative draft does contain a provision permitting municipalities to “opt out” of the opportunity of hosting a cannabis-related business for a five-year period.

Based on her research, Frantantoni said she’s discovered that, so far, 21 municipalities in the Garden State have passed laws against tolerating locally operating cannabis-related enterprises.

Among those closest to The Observer territory are Garfield, East Rutherford, Clifton, Carlstadt, Mahwah, Wayne, Lodi and Palisades Park. The Township of Lyndhurst has introduced an amendment to its zoning ordinance that would ban the operation of marijuanarelated enterprises that would have to be approved by the Bergen County Planning Board.

As of last week, the League has not taken a position on the proposed legislation which appears, for now, to be focused on communities with populations of 120,000 or more or those with a certain percentage of marijuanarelated arrests as primary “impact zones” for the proposed new businesses.

That draft also calls for the state to get a 12% retail tax and municipalities to receive a 2% excise tax from such businesses.

The State Legislature could act by mid-December to take a floor vote on the final version of the bill which would then go to the governor – who favors legalizing marijuana for adult recreational use and sale – for his signature.
