VETERANS HONORED 100th anniversary of end of ‘The Great War’ marked in ceremonies here and around the globe

T 11 A.M. ON NOV. 11, 1918 — THE 11TH HOUR of the 11th day of the 11th month — the guns on the Western Front of The Great War finally fell silent.

Exactly at 11 a.m.

Between 5 a.m. (or 5:45 or 6), when the Armistice ending the war was signed, and 11 a.m., when it officially went into effect, the slaughter that defined the four-year conflict continued.

We tried to find a definitive number of last-day casualties, but, as it appears with almost everything involving that war, not much is conclusive. (Which explains the Armistice-signing times above.) But we can tell you this: The last American soldier to be slain was Sgt. Henry Gunther, 23, of Baltimore, who was killed by Ger-

KHS custodian charged with stalking student Reports: He also befriended girl on Facebook, followed her on Kearny Ave. A Kearny High School custodian has been arrested and charged with stalking a 16-year-old high school girl over the course of two academic years, the Kearny Police Department has announced.

The custodian, 43-yearold Toby Targett, of North Arlington, was charged on Nov. 2 with stalking, a fourth-

degree crime.

According to the KPD: The criminal complaint, filed by Det. Marc McCaffrey, indicated that the substance of the charge was that Targett allegedly knowingly engaged in a course of conduct directed at the girl which caused her to fear for her safety, specifically by sitting at her lunch table on

numerous occasions, being in her first-period class on numerous occasions, approaching her in the hallway in-between classes and requesting her as a friend on Facebook along with driving by and beeping at her while she was on Kearny Avenue for lunch.

The KPD says during the first week of October, KHS School Resource Officer Jack Grimm received a report from the school’s administrators that alleged Targett’s conduct toward the girl “over the last few months.”

Targett was issued a summons and was released on his own recognizance, pending his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Jersey City. It is not immediately known when Targett will make his first appearance.

GOP sweeps in NA, Eckel turns aside 11th-hour write-in challenge in Kearny Races in Harrison and East Newark were uncontested

EPUBLICANS IN North Arlington cruised to victory on Election Day, Nov. 6, sweeping the race for mayor and for the Borough Council. In Kearny, a last-minute write-in campaign for a council seat in the town’s Third Ward proved futile. It was statusquo in Harrison. And across the Passaic in Belleville and Bloomfield, races were rather quiet.

North Arlington In the race for mayor here, Daniel Pronti, a sitting GOP councilman and 11th-hour replacement for Joseph Bianchi, the mayor and candidate for the same office who died suddenly last month, handily beat three opponents — Mark Yampaglia, the Democratic nominee; Al Granell, a Democrat who ran as an independent; and Lillian Saldanha, also an independent candidate.

Pronti unofficially got 2,646 votes; Yampaglia garnered 2,015 votes; Saldanha won 313 votes; and Granell finished with 127.

At a rally following the tally of votes, Pronti addressed an energetic crowd of volunteers and supporters at the local GOP’s headquarters. His speech was broadcast on Facebook Live.

The mayor-elect took time to remember his predecessor

and to thank all who made it possible for him to win an election with just a few days to campaign.

“We ran a campaign to pay a tribute to a man (the-late Mayor Joseph Bianchi) we all ran with in the past who left us,” Pronti said. “Joe suffered from cancer for a while, and Joe met his untimely death. It’s a shame — and we’re all sad. We took it upon ourselves to make it our mission to push his legacy forward. And that’s what we’re going to plan on doing, from today. That’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to push everything forward.

“Everybody heard about the renaissance. We have the North Arlington renaissance going forward now — and we’re going to keep pushing it. “ … the tribute you guys are paying me right now — it means so much to me I swear to God.” Pronti pledged to continue to do as much as he can for the residents as mayor as he has as a councilman. He also said he was tired of seeing elected representatives being elected representatives when they were at meetings and before a crowd, only to disappear and be unavailable in between meetings.

“They were a councilman at the meeting and then at the next meeting, they picked up where they left off,” he said.

“And I always said if I had the opportunity to do that, I would council the entire

Kearny swears in 4 new in blue

By Ron Leir Special to The Observer The latest batch of Kearny bluecoats have already been making a difference for the better in the community.

Officer Anthony Nunez, one of four new recruits who recently finished the in-house field-training program the KPD offers, was credited with coming to the aid of a choking baby. On the first day he was assigned to street patrol, Nunez applied the Heimlich maneuver and saved the infant’s life, according to Police Chief George King.

Nunez and three of his peers were sworn in at Town Hall ceremonies Nov. 7 as Mayor Alberto Santos administered the oath of office to each as family members looked on.

The four — including the sixth woman to join the ranks of the KPD — bring the department to full strength,

each: Nunez is a 2011 graduate of Kearny High School where he was a varsity wrestler. He majored in criminal justice while attending New Jersey City University and, before joining the KPD, he worked as a pharmacy technician at Midland Pharmacy in Kearny. During his academy training, he participated in the Ironman competition.

Hudson County workers will make at least $15/Hr.

By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise signed an executive order recently that will make $15 an hour the minimum wage for all Hudson County government non-union employees.

The EO will immediately provide raises to more than 100 county employees, primarily seasonal parks staff, corrections and sheriff’s officers-in-training and some clerical workers. Since most of the county’s 3,000 personnel are either unionized or non-unionized professional staff, the move will not have a huge cost impact for the county — but the county executive believes it sends

Before joining the KPD, Funk worked for the N.J. Department of Corrections at East Jersey State Prison in Rahway.

He, too, has made an early favorable impression during his introductory field work in Kearny, King said.

“After a tragic incident, while off-duty, Officer Funk went back to the residents [involved in the incident] to see if they were OK,” the chief recounted. And by doing that, King said, “you – and the Kearny Police Department – made a friend for life.”

King also referenced a Facebook entry in which someone posted kudos to the officer for the role Funk played in responding to a disabled motorized scooter on the Pulaski Skyway, not only handling the assignment in a professional manner but also staying with the driver until he was taken care of.

These are examples of how police officers can build good will between the KPD and the members of the community, King said.

County Executive DeGise for taking action to raise the wage to $15/ hour for non-union Hudson County employees,” Murphy said. “As I work with the legislature to make a $15/hour minimum wage the law throughout New Jersey, it is heartening to know we have strong leaders like DeGise who are taking swift and decisive action on behalf of their employees.”

DeGise sees his executive order as a first step toward moving county government forward on what has been described as the “Fight for $15” nationally and here in New Jersey.

He is open to legislative changes from the freeholder board that would perhaps expand the $15 minimum as requirement for contractors doing

business with the county.

“We will look at the impact on taxpayers with the freeholders, and see if this is something we can do in the future,” DeGise said. “But the important thing was for Hudson County to step up now and show we support the ‘Fight for $15,’ not just with words — but also with actions.”

Progressive policy advocates cheered the DeGise’s decision.

“Today’s executive order by Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise means more momentum in the fight to ensure everyone in New Jersey can earn a living wage,” said Analilia Mejia, executive director of New Jersey Working Families

It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is just a week away. Wasn’t it just 90 degrees and humid outside?

Of course, with the holiday always comes the reminder of how much we often take for granted. What might seem so simple — a dinner with family, with all the usual fare, from turkey to potatoes to stringbean casserole to stuffing etc.

— isn’t so easy for countless families right in our own backyard.

For many, the thought of being able to purchase a turkey and the fixings is an ill-affordable luxury.

Just think about that for a moment.

For many families, it’s not possible to put something as simple as a turkey on the dinner table. Could you even begin to imagine what it must be like to wake up on Thanksgiving morning, knowing that a family meal isn’t possible?

There could be any number of reasons why or how this is possible — from unemployment, to having to decide whether to pay rent or buy food, having to decide whether medication is more important than celebrating the holiday.

We could go on ad infinitim here.

EDITORIAL It could even be someone you know going through such a scenario. Perhaps it is you.

Yet we live in a community where people take care of each other.

In Kearny, on Thanksgiving Day, under the guidance of Pastor the Rev. Joseph Mancini, St. Stephen’s Church will offer a full Thanksgiving meal, at noon, to anyone who needs one — no questions asked, no jacket required. Scores of parishioners at the parish will spend parts of Nov. 21 and Nov. 22 preparing the meals.

In Harrison, the Knights of Columbus Council No. 402 and the Harrison-East Newark Elks, under the guidance of Larry Bennett, a member of both organizations, will bring turkeys and and all that comes with it to the elderly and shut-ins of Harrison and East Newark.

In both cases, the volunteers do so not because they must, but because it’s the right thing to do. They do so on their own time, using their own talents and treasure, so that those who are less fortunate can

experience the happiness that should come at Thanksgiving.

So with a just over a week to go before we pause to give thanks for all that we’ve got, maybe this could be a time to pitch in. This would be the best time to donate to a local food pantry since once Thanksgiving is over, those shelves are often way too empty.

In fact, St. Stephen’s could still use donations of 16- to 20-pound turkeys, pumpkin or apple pies, whole potatoes for mashing, turkey roasting pans (disposable aluminum) and roasting bags, whipped cream, take-home containers and ShopRite or BJ’s gift cards.

Donations may be brought to the rectory, on Washington Avenue off Kearny Avenue, by Nov. 19.

This would be an incredibly good chance to be “Women and Men for Others,” as the Rev. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., the great Jesuit, called all of us to be.

After reviewing footage from neighborhood surveillance cameras, Williams developed a suspect, whose description she broadcast to other officers.

Minutes after receiving the description, police reported, Officers Harold Azurdia and Ryan Stickno located that suspect — Ryan Bannon-McNeill, 23, of Kearny — walking on Chestnut just south of Bergen Avenue He was arrested, charged with criminal mischief and sent to the Hudson County Jail.

No injuries were reported and the cans were extinguished by Kearny firefighters and police. *** Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following: Nov. 1 At 8:06 p.m., Officers Stickno and Kevin Carvalho were called to Walmart, where store security had detained two Newark residents — Johnny Torres, 47, and Margarita Cruz, 41 — for allegedly concealing $319.62 worth of tools and other merchandise in bookbags. Incident to arrest, police said, Torres was also found to be in possession of a hypodermic needle, crack pipe, screwdrivers and pliers (commonly used to open packages), while Cruz had a crack pipe and a glass vial of crack cocaine.

Both defendants were charged with shoplifting, conspiracy and possession of drug paraphernalia. Torres was additionally charged with possession of the needle and burglary tools; Cruz, with possession of crack. The pair were lodged in the county jail.

Nov. 2 At 10:01 a.m., Dets. Michael Andrews and Cesar Negron were driving on Passaic Avenue when they observed Angela Perez, 28, of Harrison, riding a bicycle through the Modell’s parking lot. Their attention was drawn to her, police said, because she appeared “disheveled” and was wearing a sneaker on one foot and a sandal on the other.

At Bergen Avenue, they said, she dismounted and nearly fell to the ground before beginning to limp up the hill.

The detectives approached to inquire if she needed medical attention, but in response, she began rifling through her purse, according to Perez, to find her identification. Said rifling reportedly brought into view a jar of crack cocaine.

Police said she was also

found to have a crack pipe, a hypodermic syringe loaded with heroin and an empty wax fold stamped “Holy Ghost Grim Reaper.”

Perez reportedly declined medical aid but was charged on a summons with possession of the drugs, drug paraphernalia and the hypodermic.

Nov. 4 At 11:45 a.m., Officer Christos Manolis responded to a report of a fight at Wawa, where witnesses said an argument had erupted between two women over whose car was next in line for the free tire air pump and then turned physical before one of the parties fled.

According to a witness, police reported, driver Elisangel Abrantes-Darcy, 41, of Harrison, struck her adversary’s car several times with a ball-peen hammer until the occupant of the other vehicle showered Abrantes-Darcy with pepper spray and drove away.

The alleged pepper-sprayer apparently was not the owner of the car she had been driving. Police said that owner — a South Orange female — was identified and contacted, but refused to cooperate in the investigation.

Abrantes-Darcy was released on a summons charging unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Nov. 6 At 1:28 p.m., near the corner of Kearny and Johnston avenues, detectives from the KPD, Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and U.S. Department of Homeland Security converged on a Chevrolet pickup truck that had been under surveillance for the suspected trafficking of illegal narcotics.

Further investigation, including assistance from the Essex County Sheriff’s K9 Unit, led to the discovery of more than a kilogram of cocaine concealed in a backpack in the truck, police said.

Officers charged Luis FeijooFernandez, 32, of Clifton, and Jose Ramirez, 34, of Lindenhurst, Long Island, New York, with possession with intent to distribute cocaine (first degree), possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school and 500 feet of a public park, possession of drug paraphernalia and conspiracy.

Could an unused reservoir become a new Belleville park?

By Ron Leir Special to The Observer A storage reservoir site in Belleville owned and operated by the City of Newark is being eyed for possible acquisition by the township, Mayor Michael Melham said.

The facility, which sits on a 12-acre rustic tract off Joralemon Street at Belleville’s highest point at 61 feet above sea level, was built by Newark in the mid1800s as a gravity reservoir to service the surrounding area which was then still part of the Brick City.

Ultimately, underground pipes and pumps were installed to provide for transmission of water from the Wanaque and Pequannock reservoirs in northern New Jersey to Belleville and other area communities.

During the late 1980s, after new federal rules restricted open-air reservoirs, Newark drained it, installed new pipes and transferred the water into two underground storage tanks, one with a 200,000-gallon capacity and another designed to hold up to 50,000 gallons.

Along the way, Melham said, “we’ve had handshake agreements, from former Newark Mayors Sharpe James [1999-2006] to [current U.S. Sen.] Cory Booker [2006-2013]” but no formal contracts.

Melham said Newark has had the property appraised but “we don’t have that number yet.”

Now, the mayor said, he wants to acquire the fencedin land to use as a passive recreation site. “We could host public events like concert series there,” much as Lyndhurst has done with its Town Hall Park, he said.

“They’ve delivered a quality facility for the residents there.”

“We could have a gazebo,

bandstand, outdoor bleachers,” Melham said. “Only a very small portion of the property is buildable.”

To that end, the township governing body voted Nov. 5 to award a non-bid professional services contract to Remington & Vernick Engineers, based in Secaucus, “to investigate and design reservoir project for the following: passive park, walking trails, [band] shell with seating, housing and related issues for a fee not to exceed $20,000.”

During public comments, resident Vincent Frantantoni said that while he liked the idea of a park – (he recalled trying to negotiate a lease for that purpose with Newark when he was a township commissioner) –

he “never realized that language was part of the resolution. I’m not denying the contribution. I’m just saying I wasn’t aware of the language.”

That didn’t stop the governing body from approving the contract award, however.

Nutley residents narrowly reject school referendum … so now what?

By Ron Leir Special to The Observer NUTLEY – It was oh so close, but still no sale.

A second try by the Nutley Board of Education to persuade residents to invest in a plan to relieve overcrowding failed for the second straight year. And all three BOE incumbents up for re-election lost their seats.

This time around, the BOE split its proposition into two

questions, one that would authorize spending $56.82 million for classroom-related improvements at Nutley High School, John H. Walker Middle School, Washington and Yantacaw Elementary Schools; the second, proposing to fund $10.15 million for additional work at the high school and two elementary schools.

The BOE had projected a tax impact on a home with an “average” assessment of

$318,300 of $331 per year from Question No. 1 and $63 from Question 2.

An affirmative vote on Question No. 1 was required in order to vote “yes” on Question No. 2.

In any case, Question No. 1 was defeated by a vote of 4,552 to 4,384 – a difference of just 1.88%. Question No. 2 lost by a margin of 4,646 to 4,166.

— who were asked to approve a single question pitching a $70.4 million price-tag — the end result was the same.

In a statement posted on the district website, Superintendent of Schools Julie Glazer said the public appeal represented “our best long-term solution to the overcrowding in our schools. We believed that this referendum would not only alleviate our instructional space issues and remove trailers throughout the district but also provide a tremendous benefit to our students, our educational programs and the community as a whole …

“Moving forward, I will ask for your continued engagement and participation as we strive to resolve critical needs for space, security upgrades and programming …”

Asked what consequences to expect from the referendum’s defeat, district spokeswoman Karen Greco said: “We will need more trailers at several elementary schools for September.” Before the vote, the BOE had projected that if the referendum failed, existing trailers at Yantacaw and Washington would remain, a second story would be added to the Washington trailer and Spring Garden School would get a double-decker trailer, all by September 2019, and that a redistricting plan for elementary school students would be implemented.

The BOE had planned to incorporate all sixth-graders at the middle school as part

of the improvements contemplated under the referendum.

To help promote this year’s referendum, a group of more than 30 local residents formed a grassroots committee, “Say YES to Nutley,” and sought to persuade voters about the merits of the district’s plan.

Its officers were Melissa Blum, chair; Marla Hunter, treasurer; and Janice Fraser, communications manager.

The committee released a statement saying the public questions failed “because there were many people that were unaware of this referendum and there was a lot of misinformation circulating on social media. We also believe there was a lot of negative association with the last referendum, even through none of the current board [of education] members had representation on the board during that time period.”

For the future, the committee said it would continue to stay active. “We are hopeful that the new board members can deliver on their promise of a comprehensive referendum plan that costs less than the one most recently proposed while solving the issues of overcrowding.”

In the school board race, Kenneth J. Reilly, with 4,495 votes; Erica Zarro, 3,970; and Theresa Teri Quirk, 3,745, defeated sitting BOE members Deborah J. Russo, Salvatore Balsamo and Ryan Kline.

Russo polled 3,690, Balsamo got 3,463 and Kline collected 3,094.

There were 63 write-ins.

the treatment of Newark’s potable water were likely compromised, causing intrusion of lead in some service lines.

Specifically, the report cites elevated levels of halo acetic acids – containing potentially toxic chemicals – at eight locations in Newark where water sampling was last done.

The Natural Resources Defense Council has sued the city, alleging Newark has violated state and federal water-safety rules, but Newark Mayor Ras Baraka asserts

Smith said Suez, which signed on to run the town’s water system in July 2016, provides its own anti-corrosion treatment of the water as it comes from Wanaque — before any toxins can leach into local service lines — and the company also checks for alkalinity levels.

— Robert Smith Kearny Business Administrator the NRDC has exaggerated its case, adding that the city plans to replace old lead service lines. However, according to published reports, that could take years and millions of dollars to achieve.

As an interim step, Newark is distributing free tap water filters to its residents, is aiding homeowners with replacement – where needed – of lead service lines and inviting residents to get their children tested for lead levels in their blood as a precaution.

Kearny, Belleville, Nutley and Bloomfield are supplied with drinking water by Newark, from the Wanaque and Pequannock reservoirs in Passaic and Morris counties, respectively.

In Kearny, town Business Administrator Robert Smith addressed the issue at the Nov. 7 Town Council meeting, noting Kearny has had “historically low levels of risk” to its drinking water and, based on that, gets its water tested every three years.

During its last round of testing in June, among the samples taken from 30 “randomly selected” locations around town, all but one was logged in at “below 15 parts per billion” for lead, the safety threshold, he said. He didn’t identify the location that

assurances, Smith said, they can avail themselves of “private testing” of their tap water. Mayor Alberto Santos reminded residents they are responsible for water connections “from the curb line to their house.”

In Belleville – where residents of the township’s Silver Lake section get water from Newark – Mayor Michael Melham said last week that after having spoken to Baraka and having “put our engineers in touch” with Newark’s counterparts, he’s convinced residents are safe – so long as their homes aren’t equipped with lead pipes – which many older buildings may still have.

Based on information from Newark engineers, Melham said there should be “absolutely no short-term health effects” from consuming the water.

Elaborating, Melham referenced a fact sheet posted by Newark that reads: “To have any long-term health risks, a person would have to drink 64 ounces of water every day at the [Maximum Contaminant Level] for 70 years to have a one-in-a-million chance of having the possible adverse health effects related to [halo acetic acids].”

Blue Tide falls in NJSIAA sectional soccer title game

Two Observer Athletes of Week from Belleville with same passion In February of 2006, Bobby Cozzarelli shocked the local sports scene, when the Belleville High School junior wrestler won the Essex County championship as a No. 5 seed. That title earned him the distinction of being The Observer Athlete of the Week.

Cozzarelli went on to Quinnipiac University and earned his doctorate in physical therapy.

He is now employed

by Hackensack University Medical Center and works out of the HUMC/ Giants facility in Maywood.

Twelve years later, Eric Rivera, another Belleville High product, made similar headlines by scoring 11 touchdowns in his first four games of the 2018 football season.

Rivera’s explosion onto the local scene earned him the right of being The Observer Athlete of the Week last month.

When Rivera was interviewed for his AOW feature, he expressed interest in possibly becoming a physical therapist someday.

That interest ignited an idea. What would it be like to have two Observer AOWs together to discuss their interests for a possible career?

Sure enough, the

30-year-old Cozzarelli returned to Belleville High recently to meet Rivera to discuss his career in physical therapy.

“I knew I wanted to help people,” Cozzarelli said. “I thought that working in physical therapy would make me happy and satisfy me. When I was in high school, I was a wrestler 24 hours a day, seven days a week all year. It was all I knew. When I graduated, I knew I wanted to do something in sports. So I realized that I wanted to be the best student of physical therapy that I could be. I used the same motivation I had when I was an athlete. I had the same drive.”

It was hard for Cozzarelli to fathom that his athletic days were over.

By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com When Harrison High School defeated Madison by a convincing 5-2 score last Monday in the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group II semifinals, it almost made you believe that the Blue Tide was destined to collect another state championship trophy a few days later.

But it wasn’t meant to be, as the Blue Tide took a heartbreaking 1-0 loss at the hands of Hackettstown in the sectional championship game Thursday, dropping a game that the Blue Tide controlled the action and the midfield, but not the scoreboard.

“We dominated the game, but we didn’t put the ball in the net,” said a disappointed Harrison head coach Mike

Rusek. “We took 21 shots and they took only three, but one of theirs went in. We just weren’t connecting for some reason. We weren’t finishing the play. As coaches, (assistant coach and brother) John and I tried several different things and unfortunately they didn’t work. If you lose a game like this in September, you chalk it up as an experience.

When you lose one in November, you go home. It’s over.”

What makes the loss so frustrating is how truly dominant the Blue Tide appeared just three days prior.

“You’re certainly not used to it,” Rusek said. “It was very uncomfortable to talk to the team after the game. We didn’t talk about the game so much.

We talked about the season as a whole. We didn’t talk too much about the game. We all

felt the same disappointment after the game.”

The loss ended the Blue Tide’s season at 19-5 and ended the local soccer season, as Kearny lost to Morris Knolls in the North Jersey Section 1, Group IV semifinals last Monday.

“The season was going the way we wanted it,” Rusek said. “We took our lumps a little in September and October to get ready for November.

And we were playing well. We lost to a good Union City team (in the Hudson County Tournament championship game last week) and came back to play well in the sectional. We were excited to win the sectional Thursday on our home field.”

But that didn’t take place.

Through it all, Cozzarelli remembered his athletic roots.

“I remember Coach (Joe) Nisivoccia telling me that I had to be perfect every day,” Cozzarelli said. “Then I remembered getting that same advice in learning to be a physical therapist.”

Cozzarelli said that when he was accepted into Quinnipiac’s prestigious physical therapy program, there were 120 students.

“But I graduated with only 62,” Cozzarelli said. “A lot of people realize that it’s just not for them.”

“I think I became foolish with my time off,” Rivera said. “I was childish and didn’t realize how important my grades are. I think the time off made me realize that I needed to mature to become a better student and a better football player.”

Rivera said that he was motivated to study physical therapy because of the rehabilitation process he had to endure after his knee surgery.

“I saw the atmosphere involved and that’s why I wanted to become a physical therapist,” Rivera said.

“When I was a sophomore, I just wanted to be the cool kid and play sports. I didn’t realize I had to do well in school.”

Rivera has since remedied his ways and is on a better path, thus the meeting with a proven Belleville High product working in the field that he desires. Rivera will have to take a different route, like perhaps a junior college, before heading off to a four-year or five-year program like the one Cozzarelli mastered.

“I think I’m on the right track now,” Rivera told Cozzarelli.

Cozzarelli told Rivera the importance of maintaining good grades.

“No school is going to just let you in,” Cozzarelli said.

“Your grades need to get you in. You have to have blinders on. You have to set goals every day. You have to stick with it.”

Rivera told Cozzarelli that his grades have dramatically improved over the last year.

“I’m getting all B’s now,” Rivera said. “I’m seeing the results of my hard work.”

Cozzarelli told Rivera about

what he does now, working with a wide variety of patients.

“Where I am now, I treat everybody,” said Cozzarelli, who spends a good portion of his week during aquatic therapy at the HUMC/Giants pool, as well as inside the facility’s training center. “I work with orthopedic patients, stroke victims, geriatrics, pediatrics,” Cozzarelli said. “I see some people who were unable to walk then manage to walk just 10 feet. And that means so much to me. I’m doing what I wanted to do. Every day, I enjoy what I do. It’s very rewarding. I’m helping people get back to do what they normally do.”

One of the patients Cozzarelli helped was the sportswriter who wrote the Athlete of the Week story 12 years ago and the same one who wrote the one about Rivera last month.

When I was prescribed water therapy by my doctors from Kessler Rehabilitation Institute in West Orange (Dr. Cristin McKenna, who by the way is a Kearny native) as part of my recovery from a severe bout with amyotrophic bilateral neuropathy and spinal stenosis five years ago this week, my first physical therapist was none other than Bobby Cozzarelli.

Bobby recognized me from the minute I stepped into the pool and remembered the AOW story.

Rivera mentioning physical therapy in his interview for being AOW made me think about paying it forward, the same way Kessler and Dr. McKenna helped me, the same way Cozzarelli helped me in

We wanted to win the sectional final in the last home game our seniors would play together. To take a loss is disappointing for everyone. For two years in a row, that hasn’t worked out.”

The Blue Tide finished with 19 wins, yet finished second in the Hudson County Tournament to Union City, second in the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference-Liberty Division to Dwight-Englewood and now second in the NJSIAA North 2, Group II to Hackettstown.

“We’re the best second place team in New Jersey,” Rusek said. “Every time there was a trophy to play for, we lost it. That’s going to stick with me. We just couldn’t win the big game.”

There was another disappointment to the end of the Blue Tide’s season. It

Sowe, who scored two goals in the semifinal victory over Madison, ended the season with 35 goals, one year after he tallied a school record 37 goals.

Sowe ended his tenure with 83 goals and 73 assists for his career, setting new school records in both totals.

“He played in three sectional finals,” Rusek said.

Rusek credited Hackettstown for keeping Sowe off the score sheet Thursday.

“They shut down Omar and unfortunately we didn’t have an answer,” Rusek said. “My job now as a coach is to target his future and help him out to get to the next level as much as I can.

He’s a good kid and has been a great captain. He believes in what we do. He did everything he could to help this team. I’m very lucky to have coached Omar.”

Rusek also mentioned senior starters Maicol Diaz, a defender, and Louis Palomino, a midfielder.

“The one good thing about

this year is that we had a lot of juniors and sophomores playing,” Rusek said. “We return a good team, so we hope to build off this year.”

One of those returnees should be junior midfielder Jairo Araujo, who scored 10 goals in the last five games of the season, including a four-goal explosion in the first round of the state tournament against Fort Lee. Araujo ended the season with 15 goals and 15 assists.

“He had become productive for us down the stretch,” Rusek said of Araujo.

Allan DeMelo also returns next year. The junior had 12 goals and seven assists.

So another soccer season ends in Harrison, but this one ends without a championship. Even in a town where winning is everything, sometimes that last win becomes so very elusive.

Lyndhurst’s Cimicata helps to lead Golden Bears to state sectional title game

By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com It was almost destined that Paul Cimicata would eventually play football for Lyndhurst High School.

After all, Cimicata’s father, Paul, Sr. was a standout player during his days at Lyndhurst in the 1970s and later played at Ramapo College, when the Bergen County institution offered football.

Cimicata’s uncles also played football for Lyndhurst during that same time frame.

“Football runs in my family,” Cimicata said. “It’s in my blood. Football is my passion.”

The dedication for the sport began when Paul was just a little boy, going from playing flag football to the actual tackle variety – with shoulder pads and helmets.

“When I put on the pads, I

knew I wanted to hit somebody,” Cimicata said. “I wasn’t that good or anything, but when I hit the pads, I knew that it was definitely for me. I don’t remember muxh except one moment.”

In the fledgling stages of Cimicata’s football playing career, he drove his shoulder pads into the shoulder of an unsuspecting teammate and knocked the poor soul for a loop.

“It was awesome,” Cimicata said. “I just remember the sound.”

High School. Paul Cimicata was a starter at defensive end for most of the prior three seasons for the Golden Bears and more than held his own.

Protecting the family legacy will do that for a player.

“He has long arms and good size,” Tuero said of Cimicata.

“He has the ability to get to the edge. He gets a good rush on the quarterback. When he was a sophomore, I gave him a shot and he handled it right away and he’s been there ever since. I gave him the opportunity and he showed me that he could do it.”

But when the 2018 season began, Cimicata didn’t want to be just one dimensional.

“I figured I could try blocking,” Cimicata said. “Being a defensive player, I figured I knew what I was doing to get past the offensive linemen who were trying to block me.

So I just figured that I could do that a little in reverse.”

So Tuero decided to give Cimicata a shot at being a tight end.

“He was a staple of our defense at defensive end, but I thought he could help us

on offense,” Tuero said. “He always knew he could do it and he wanted to be good at it. So one day, he just started blocking. He just turned it on.

He was just dominating guys up front.”

And Cimicata was also catching a pass here and there.

“He caught the game-winning touchdown in our win over Hawthorne and he had another receiving touchdown in our win against Elmwood Park,” Tuero said. “In the game against Hawthorne, he got hurt, came out, went back in and scored.”

Cimicata caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from Brian Podolski in the 35-32 win over Hawthorne to start the season Aug. 30. He then hauled in a 38-yarder from Podolski in the Golden Bears’ 42-6 win over Elmwood Park Oct. 12.

But throughout, Cimicata has been a devastating blocker on the offensive line and a steady force on the defensive line, as the Golden Bears keep putting up win after win.

NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group II semifinals against Verona, Cimicata had perhaps his finest two-way performance of the season.

He collected seven tackles, including two for losses on defense, while he spearheaded the blocking for sensational junior running back Piotr Partyla, who had perhaps the greatest single-game performance in Lyndhurst football history.

With Cimicata leading the way, Partyla carried the ball 39 times for an astounding 320 yards and scored five touchdowns on offense, while he collected the interception on the final play of the game to preserve the Golden Bears’ thrilling 37-34 victory.

The win was Lyndhurst’s sixth straight victory, improving the team’s record to 9-1 and catapulting the Golden Bears into the NJSIAA North 2, Group II championship game Friday night against long-time heated rival and feared nemesis Rutherford at Tryon Field in Rutherford at 7 p.m.

It marks the first time that Lyndhurst has reached a state sectional title game since winning the North 1, Group II championship in 1983.

For his efforts, Cimicata has been selected as The Observer Athlete of the Week for the past week, the second straight Lyndhurst player to receive the honor and the third this season, joining the aforementioned Partyla (Oct. 3) and teammate Jeff Grasso last week.

Sure, after the eye-popping performance by Partyla, one would think he would automatically receive the honor again. But Partyla’s lofty statistics do not take place without the stellar blocking

“My mom always tells me that if I want to do something, I have to be passionate about it,” Rivera said. “You have to love it.”

So Rivera has been steered in the right direction, hopefully by a fellow Buccaneer and a broken down sportswriter who was fortunate enough to write about both of them in a simple weekly feature that has graced this newspaper for the last 16 years.

“It’s great to finally meet someone who was like me,

Cimicata’s outstanding contribution shines on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

“He helps Piotr tremendously,” Tuero said. “He opens things up for Piotr. I always thought he had the potential to be a good blocker. But he’s stepped it up more than I could have imagined. Defensively, I’ve had opposing coaches say that Paul is unblockable. He’s so long and has long arms.

He’s able to keep offensive linemen off his body and he’s able to get to the quarterback. He gets behind the line of scrimmage and makes plays, big plays, big tackles for losses.”

Tuero said that Cimicata has collected five sacks and forced 17 pressures.

Cimicata is also an excellent student, amassing a 4.2 grade point average. Schools like Monmouth are interested in securing his services, but Cimicata is patient enough to wait out the process a little longer and see what materializes. He would like to study business in college.

The state championship fever has everyone in Lyndhurst in a frenzy. Not only are the Golden Bears playing for its first state sectional football title in 35 years, but it’s against the dreaded neighborly rival, who the Golden Bears haven’t come close to toppling since 2011.

“It’s great for the town, great for the people,” Tuero said.

“The town is buzzing. Everyone has been waiting for this for so long. I feel like it was meant to be, for us to be 9-1 and facing Rutherford. It’s what the kids wanted. No one could have predicted this. No one believed in us. It’s up to the kids now to finish this incredible movie script.” another Athlete of the Week,” Rivera said. “I think it puts me on the right track and gives me some sort of direction. He gave me all the right advice.”

“It’s nice to see another Athlete of the Week from Belleville,” Cozzarelli said. “Any piece of advice I can give to help, I’m glad to do. He has a lot to figure out. He knows that he’ll never get a chance to do it all again.”

Cozzarelli then took a brief tour around his former high school, saw some former teachers, took a trip down Memory Lane. Belleville has certainly changed over the last 12 years, but apparently, its athletes have not. Once a Buccaneer, always a Buccaneer.

Cimicata also plays basketball and he’s been joking with Lyndhurst head boys’ basketball coach Tom McGuire about the start of basketball practice later this month.

“I told Coach that we’re going to have to delay basketball for a while if we win,” Cimicata said. “He was fine with it, as long as we keep it going.”

McGuire understands,

because he was on the last Queen of Peace team to win the Non-Public Group 2 state championship in 2004.

“It’s really an honor to get this opportunity,” Cimicata said. “We’ve been working together for so long and now we get a chance to change the program forever. No one could ever imagined that we could do this. We’ve had a 35-year

drought and now we get a chance to end that. When we found out it was Rutherford that was just tremendous, because we get a chance to gain a little revenge on them.”

The two teams met in the first round of the same sectional a year ago, with Rutherford earning a 30-6 victory.

Cimicata wants to change all of that this weekend.

Leon Romanowski Mr. Leon Romanowski, 79, a former Harrison resident, died Friday, Nov. 9 in Brick.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Our Lady Czestochowa Church in Harrison at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Relatives and friends may visit in the Condon Funeral Home, 684 Kearny Ave., Kearny (condonfuneralhome. com) on Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 4-8 p.m.

Mr. Romanowski had been an assembler for Unette Corp in Parsippany until retiring 14 years ago. Born in Poland, he came to the U.S. in 1959 and resided in Harrison for many years.

He is survived by his daughter, Ursula Romanowski and his his sister Zuzanne Gronet.

He also leaves behind two nieces, Ann Camaiore and Barbara Gronet.

Irene is survived by her former husband Richard Floyd.

The mother of Sandra Graham (Kyle), Thomas Floyd (thelate Tina) and Michael Floyd (Tara), she was the sister of thelate James and Herbert Adams and Marion Digh. Also surviving are her grandchildren Ashlyn, Andrew and Katherine.

Michael Patrick Brundage Michael Patrick Brundage, 65, a longtime resident of Somerset, died Nov. 4, 2018, at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in New Brunswick.

Born in New York City, Michael was raised in Iselin and Kearny before moving to Somerset.

He was predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Diane Cytacki, and by his parents Howard and Anna (Bolton) Brundage. He is survived by his brother

Thomas (Eileen) of Cary, North Carolina; sisters Kathleen (Robert) Balascio of Madison, and Anne (Joseph) Kelly of Brick, and his many nieces and nephews.

Michael attended St. Cecilia High School in Kearny where he played soccer and joined the basketball 1,000 Point Club. After graduating from Rutgers University in Newark, he had a long career in the insurance industry, working for Kemper and AIG. Michael enjoyed spending time with family and friends and caring for family cats and dog. He will be truly missed by all.

Frank was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Enola, the Knights of Columbus and the VFW. Surviving are his beloved wife, Som; his children, Thomas Joseph Vaccaro and his wife Debra, Antoinette Vaccaro Thompson and her husband, Geoff, Francis Anthony Vaccaro and his wife Melissa, and Amoretta Marie Eby and her husband, Rob; 11 grandchildren and a great-

granddaughter.

A viewing will take place Thursday, Nov. 15, from 11 a.m. to noon at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church 225 Salt Road, Enola Pa. 17025. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon.

Burial with full military honors will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

As he went door to door, passing out fliers, Handlin hammered away at a single issue — the most recent PILOT (payment in lieu of taxes) that a majority of the governing body endorsed for a developer to build rental apartments at the old Marshall Clark Bat Factory at 60 Passaic Ave.

The complaint says the Special Victims Unit of the HCPO was notified, on July 30, 2018, that there was a criminal-sexual contact case involving a 17-year-old girl and McDonnell, also a retired Kearny policeman.

The victim, according to an affidavit for probable cause, reveals the victim knew McDonnell, the coach of the boys’ team, because she plays on the girls’ team. The girl alleged that sometime in November 2017, McDonnell “kissed her on the neck.” Then, on June 23, 2018, “she entered a closet inside the school gym to get a basketball and McDonnell followed her into the closet and smacked her on the buttocks.”

The victim, according to the affidavit, says McDonnell reportedly had also “made inappropriate comments toward her and other girls” as well.

The victim, who is not being named (names of juvenile victims and victims of sexually-based crimes are never reported by this newspaper) also says McDonnell reportedly gave her his business card

It was Handlin’s contention this 30-year tax exemption — combined with prior PILOTs awarded — is a drain on the town by depriving the local school system of needed revenues – particularly if the new residential developments generate more school-age children.

Handlin’s ad-hoc candidacy followed the formation of a citizens group that pledged to keep its focus on future PILOT considerations — like two now under consideration by the mayor and council.

Additionally, it likely prompted the governing body to draft and adopt an ordinance authorizing annual payments to the Kearny Board of Education of 5% of current and future PILOTs, beginning

by Judicial Officer Melissa Murray ordering him to appear in the Superior Court of New Jersey for an initial appearance at the Hudson County Courthouse, 595 Newark Ave., Jersey City, on Oct. 25, at 1 p.m.

It is not immediately clear what the results of that appearance were.

A source tells The Observer McDonnell was suspended as boys’ basketball coach immediately after the complaints were initially filed against him. He subsequently resigned and has since been replaced as coach — the basketball season kicks off next month.

This was to be “The War to End All Wars.” And we all know how that turned out.

However, the blooddrenched futility should never be allowed to diminish the heroism and sacrifices of our WWI veterans. which is why, each Nov. 11, the U.S. honors their memory — and the heroism and sacrifices of all U.S. veterans.

On Sunday morning, Nov. 11, 2018, members of the local American Legion, West Hudson Marine Corps League and Veterans of Foreign Wars — along with Kearny Fire and Police members, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, political leaders and patriotic citizens — gathered at Veterans Park on Kearny Ave. for the annual Veterans Day memorial service.

This year, in addition to the traditional cannon and rifle salutes and the honor guards and the placement of a wreath, there was a reading aloud of 60 names — those of the 60 Kearny men who were killed in World War I. The principal ceremony speaker was Mayor Alberto

Santos, and we are going to quote extensively from his remarks, because they echoed our own feelings about the now-century-old legacy: “After the end of the war on this day 100 years ago,” Santos said.
