BRANWELL’S DREAM COMES

I

F YOU’VE LIVED IN Kearny — or know someone who does — over the 20 years or so, chances are you are a patient of, or (again) know someone whose foot doctor is John Branwell.

The long-time podiatrist on Seeley Avenue who once

practiced inside Wel-Fit Shoes has long been regarded highly by everyone who knows him.

But Branwell had a secret of sorts that he rarely shared with anyone — he was a fanatical “Wheel of Fortune,” fan and wanted to be a contestant on the show.

“I started watching the show in 1984, 1985, when

I was living with my grandparents in Mississippi,” Branwell says. He was enrolled at Memphis State at the time, and rather than spend exorbitant cash on living on campus, he lived with grandma and grandpa.

“And when we’d watch, I would solve puzzles with just one letter,” Branwell says. “It would drive my grandparents

nuts. They’d throw me out of the room because I was so good at it.”

Years would pass.

Decades, in fact.

Branwell says he never gave serious thought to trying to get on the show.

But then, in March, he was at home in Hawthorne (even though his greatest connections are in Kearny, he was referred to as “John from Hawthorne” in his promotional commercials) and decided he had waited enough.

“I went to wheeloffortune. com, clicked on apply and my daughter helped me to make a short video,” he says. “To get on the show you have to send them a video to explain why you want to be on the show. So we did that, sent it and waited.”

Branwell was one of only a million people who apply to get onto the show annually, he would later find out, so

the odds were instantly stacked against him. Or so one might think. But if you know John and his incredibly outgoing personality — heck, he still makes house calls — you might have thought otherwise from the get-go.

A few months pass, and in June, Branwell gets an email — he’ll be trying out at the Kimpton Ink48 Hotel in Manhattan.

When he arrived, Branwell says he was one of maybe 60 to 75 Wheel wannabes.

They spent two hours solving puzzles as one would on the show (electronically) — and then he took a written test, also a series of puzzles to solve.

When all was said and done, the organizers told him he’d be in a contestant pool for the next 18 months — and that if he were to be chosen to be a contestant,

KEARNY TO CAROLINA: ONE

easily one the most popular guys to ever put on the KFD uniform. He’s been doing what he does for a long time — and one could never accuse Ozzy of not loving what he does for

a living.

Truthfully, it’s not really a job for him — it’s more his way of life.

But what many forget is that on top of being a long-

time member of the KFD, he’s also a proud member of NJ Task Force 1 (NJTF1) a unit of women and men who, when a disaster hits, are called upon, without much notice, to pack up their lives — and head out to any number of places across the country.

Such was the case when forecasters saw that Hurricane Florence was going to slam the coast of North Carolina in early September.

Osborn says he got notice NJTF1 would be deployed several days before the cane hit the east coast. He would head from Kearny down to Wall, where the task force is headquartered. There, he gathered what is known as a 24-hour bag (with a uniform, socks and other necessities that would last a day.) Also, a 72-hour bag.

And while in Wall, preparations were made for a caravan of 30+ vehicles to make the journey 500+ miles south along the I-95 corridor.

“When we got the notice, we had four hours to get from wherever we were to Wall,” Osborn says.

NJTF1 is one of 28 across the country that gets activated during natural disasters, collapses or other disasters that require FEMA assistance.

Members are there on a voluntary basis, though they do not lose pay when they are activated.

Osborn, himself, was assigned to drive vehicle with a trailer on it from Wall to N.C. It had rescue boats in tow.

“Since it was a water event, the boats were needed,” Osborn says. “We had to stop for gas, and think of it — it’s not easy to stop with a caravan

as long as ours was. But other than that, we took the trip straight through from Wall to (North) Carolina. Think of it like a fire. We get the call — and we go until we get there.

Straight through. There are no breaks. There are no bathroom stops.”

Aside from firefighters, there are other first responders who are part of the task force, including doctors who are there to evaluate the members, engineers who ensure buildings are structurally sound, paramedics, rescue dogs and others.

Speaking of the rescue dogs, Osborn says there are four who are part of the task force. But one had recently been injured, so thanks to the nice folks on the other side of the Hudson River, the New York City Police Department “loaned” a K-9 and its handler for the journey.

“It was an unbelievable dog,” Osborn says. “Everybody loves the dogs.”

One of the first stops was in a town called Kinston, North Carolina. The staging area was an airport that had been shut down prior to the storm. At first, the members were preparing for a Category 4 hurricane, but it was ultimately downgraded to a Category 1 storm by the time it hit. But please don’t let that notion fool you.

A Category 1 storm is still absolutely massive.

While at this airport — and with it being a major water event — Osborn says he and his colleagues had a lot of unwanted visitors, none of which were humans.

“There were also fire ants and chiggers. Get bit by those and it’s bad. The chigger bites are the worst.”

At the airport, meanwhile, there were no toilets.

But it was there that North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper paid the task force a visit.

“He was great,” Osborn, who took a selfie with the Republican leader, says. “After he left, I don’t remember if it was 20 minutes or later, in comes about 15 Port-o-Johns. It was a relief.”

Literally and figuratively.

Once the storm hit, the members were broken up into units, much like firefighter units here are broken up into districts. They were responsible for checking on structures to ensure they were safe. They were charged with searching for and rescuing people who needed help.

Some wore dry suits to keep protected from the pollutants that often get into the quickly rising water.

Most of the work was done in daylight; it was simply too dangerous to be out at night, when seeing potentially live, downed wires was near impossible.

Somehow, however, the most difficult rescue was that of a woman who had a fractured tib-fib. Given the ferocity of Florence, this was in and of itself a minor miracle.

Osborn also recalled a woman who had waded in deep water to go to the store for her housebound husband.

When rescuers found her, “she wanted to go back home to be with her husband,” Osborn says. “But we were there to rescue people — not to put them into danger. We couldn’t bring her home. But when we got to her husband, he refused to leave the house. He wouldn’t leave.

Osborn spent a total of 14

days in the Tar Heel State.

Most days, the members at MREs — or, meals ready to eat. One day, however, they stumbled upon a Golden Corral, a popular buffet restaurant in the South.

“It was great,” Osborn says. “The people there were thanking us for the work we did. And the restaurant was

able to feed all of us. They had plenty of food. The MREs weren’t bad. In fact, sometimes they were good. But that was a great time.”

Imagine that? Finding an open restaurant was a highlight. That’s how bad the conditions were.

But in all, what could have been a harrowing experience

was, instead, a two-week journey that Osborn calls “incredible.”

“I’m so glad I was there — it was a great overall experience,” he says.

And if that doesn’t demonstrate Ozzy’s dedication to the work he performs on a regular basis, we’re not sure what would.

very year in August, we receive a press release from local police departments reminding parents, when the new school year begins, to be aware that it is not proper for them to double park, etc., near schools, as they drop off their children.

And, with the news release comes a reminder that summonses will be issued to those who violate these laws.

But, given how busy police are, it is understandable that enforcing these laws is near impossible as the school year moves along.

Now, here we are, nearing the end of the second full month of school — and somehow, people still cause absurd traffic jams around schools because they’re double parked and not following the regulations for letting kids off at school properly.

Just the other day, one of our staffers was in the area of two schools during times when kids were being dropped off.

First, cars were, as predicted, double parked. But it was what was seen afterward that was, perhaps, most troubling.

EDITORIAL No fewer than four adults were driving in the opposite direction while they were texting on their phones.

And, to boot, several of the double-parkers also had adults in the driver’s seats texting away, without a care in the world.

Perhaps the most frustrating was seeing two people blatantly disregarding a pulledover school bus’ flashing-red lights and extended sign.

Not only did the cars not slow to a stop — they went right through rapidly, paying no mind to the bus at all.

Fortunately, none of the kids exiting the bus appeared to be crossing the street for any reason — but what if they were? What if a child were to have crept out to cross with these reckless drivers doing their own thing without a single regard to the safety of the children?

Folks, this is simply unacceptable.

So, knowing the police can’t always be there to ensure traffic laws are followed — we

ask a simple question: What are you doing on the road that could possibly be more important than the safety of children? It doesn’t matter where you live — whether it’s Kearny, Harrison, East Newark, North Arlington, Lyndhurst, Belleville, Nutley or Bloomfield ... or anywhere else for that matter.

Drivers must be better aware of their surroundings, especially at school time.

Every single person on the road at these times must do a better job of self-policing.

We witnessed several instances that could have easily turned into tragedies.

Fortunately, that didn’t happen.

But it could have.

When you’re out on the road, please pay greater attention — especially when children are around.

Because the last thing we need is the loss of a child because someone was too concerned with a Facebook post or a text message.

Think about it next time you’re on the road and kids are around.

Before it’s too late.

KPD: Bay State fugitive was living here

19-year-old man was incarcerated in the Hudson County Jail last week facing extradition to Massachusetts on armedrobbery and weaponspossession charges after the Kearny Police Department tracked him to a Maple Street home, police reported.

According to authorities, KPD Officer Jonathan Dowie developed information last week that the suspect, Jose Burgos, was a fugitive living in Kearny under an assumed identity. Burgos, using his false ID, had been arrested here earlier this year in connection with a marijuana offense and a car-burglaries case, but at the time the KPD had been unaware of the outof-state warrants issued in his real name, police said.

Collaborating with the New Bedford, Massachusetts, Police Department, Dowie confirmed that Burgos was wanted by that state and, on Oct. 16, Dowie, Officer Michal Gontarczuk, Sgt. Mike Gonzalez and Dets.

Cesar Negron, Michael Andrews, Daniel Esteves and John Fabula located the suspect in a home on the 200 block of Maple Street, where he had been living.

Police said Burgos claimed to be a 17-yearold named “Justin,” but the officers were able to properly identify him using information supplied by Massachusetts authorities.

Burgos was charged in Kearny as a fugitive from justice and with hindering apprehension (multiple counts due to prior false-name incidents)

and was transferred to the county jail to await extradition proceedings.

Andrews and Negron and Officers Dowie and David Bush conducted a property check of the parking deck at 206 Bergen Ave. due to past narcotics use there.

At the top of the deck, police said, they found four 15-year-old Kearny residents huddled up and passing around a marijuana cigar.

When the cops intervened, the teens ran down the stairway and onto Bergen Avenue, where they were taken into custody. The reputed ganja quartet was charged with possession of pot, being under the influence of same and resisting arrest. They were released to guardians.

Oct. 12 At 1:50 p.m., Officer Anthony Nunez responded to Harrison Avenue at the Rt. 280 entrance ramp on a report of a crash between a VW Jetta and a large commercial truck.

The officer interviewed Jetta operator Malikah Best, 29, of Newark, who reportedly admitted that, after the crash, she sprayed the truck driver with pepper spray and then followed him back to his vehicle and sprayed the inside of its cab.

Police said Best explained that this was because the trucker had cussed, was intimidating and called her by a racial slur.

Newark resident, reported that he called his boss after the accident and was told to take a picture of the Jetta’s license plate. When he tried to do as instructed, Best allegedly became angry at him and used the pepper spray. A passenger in the truck echoed the statements of its driver.

Best was arrested and charged on summonses with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose. ***

Officer Nicole Williams performed a property check of the parking deck at 206 Bergen Ave., at 10:13 p.m. and, on the top of the deck, found an idling Toyota Corolla occupied by five people and allegedly, the smell of burnt marijuana.

Police said a search of the car produced pot, a bong, and empty cigar packaging.

Williams, now assisted by Officers Dowie, Bush, Chris Medina and Harold Azurdia, arrested Kaysha Burgos, 18, of Bloomfield, and four Belleville males -- Thierry Etienne, 19; Michael Almonte-Paredes, 18; Amin Espinosa, 19, and a 17-yearold — charging each with possession of pot and paraphernalia and being under the influence of the drug.

Kids and cops walk to school together

BELLEVILLE – Last week, Belleville residents observed a mini-armada of bluecoats striding along local sidewalks, each with youngsters in tow.

Don’t be alarmed – it didn’t signal a public safety threat of any kind and the kids were absolutely in good hands.

They were participating in a two-day program called

“Walk-to-School with a Police Officer.”

It was the brainchild of Police Chief Mark Minichini, who, after his appointment in July 2016, pledged to promote relations between the department and the community at-large as a gesture of good will and to enlist the support of the public.

On Thursday, Oct. 18 and Friday, Oct. 19, a group of

local officers walked with elementary school students from a predetermined location to their respective schools.

Parents and guardians were invited to join in.

This project, he added, was a natural follow-up to a pedestrian-safety presentation to school children in early October by a representative of EZ-Ride, a nonprofit/state partnership.

This was the third community-related event the Belleville Police Department has sponsored this year, including “Coffee with a Cop” and a Community Outreach gathering at the Little League field which, he said, drew an estimated 400 residents.

Other benefits that the student/officer walk can produce, the chief said, are “the hope is that kids will start walking to school again – it’s a way for them to get some exercise – and, by walking with their fellow students, to build positive relationships with their peers.”

As a youngster, Minichini said hoofing it to school was “something I enjoyed and looked forward to doing.”

He’s anticipating it can become a positive habit among more school kids.

BOE member Thomas Grolimond was energized about the prospects “for students to get to know police officers. Some kids are afraid of them but they should realize that if they’re afraid of something, they can run to a police officer to get help — especially with all the stuff happening these days.”

And, Grolimond said, it makes perfect sense to be focusing in particular on the primary grade age level. “They’re young so it’s good to get to them early in life,” he said, when they’re still receptive to the idea of making friends with a man or woman in uniform.

The chief said about 20 Belleville PD officers were assigned to the special event.

It took some doing, he said, to organize their schedules so they could handle the assignment as part of their regular duties — without incurring overtime costs.

Based on the walk’s success, Pignataro said, “we’re looking to do more,” if the logistics can be arranged.

Plaque honoring WWI firefighters replaced

FMBA, veterans groups team up as 100th anniversary of war’s end nears

OWN FIREFIGHTERS have partnered with local veterans’ groups on a timely tribute to eight brave sons of Harrison who fought in what was then called “The Great War.” Before going off to combat duty, these same eight men were exposing themselves to risk by serving as volunteer firefighters in Harrison.

Some years after they returned from overseas — all were lucky enough to have survived the ordeal of World War I — the names of the eight were engraved on a bronze plaque mounted inside

the then-Harrison Fire Headquarters on Cleveland Avenue.

“We believe it was put up in 1936 or 1937,” said Bob Gerris, commander of American Legion Post 282, “and the plaque was dedicated to those members of Harrison Fire Department’s Hook & Ladder Co. No. 1 who served in World War I.” Since then, time has taken its toll on the bronze and much of the inscription has been worn away or made illegible, Gerris said.

That new plaque, measuring 18-inches-by26-inches, is inscribed with the same dedication tribute and the names of the eight veterans: William Morrissey, Daniel Lynch, Edward McGilly, Peter Higgins (Sr.), William Treanor, William Donnelly, Peter Goodman and Hugh Cromie.

Details of the men’s military service records were unavailable, except it is known that Higgins — who happens to have been Gerris’ grandfather — won a Silver Star in connection with his Army tenure.

Upon their return stateside, five of the eight — Cromie, Goodman, Donnelly, Treanor and McGilly — went on to become paid firefighters as the town made the post-war transition from a volunteer department to full-time professionals while Higgins was appointed a police officer.

What happened to the other two wasn’t readily known.

It will be unveiled at the town’s annual Veteran’s Day ceremonies, slated for Sunday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m., at Veteran’s Plaza on the Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard side of the plaza.

“We’re looking for descendants and relatives of the eight men to attend the event,” Gerris said.

As of last week, only a handful had been located and indicated they’d be present for roll call.

Among them are: Linda Silkie, a granddaughter of Hugh Cromie and a Harrison resident; Edna McGilly, daughter of Edward McGilly and a resident of Secaucus; and Helen Robinson, daughter of Peter Higgins and a Morristown resident.

The new plaque – which Burns Bros. designed and executed over three months – will be mounted at Harrison Fire Headquarters on the Sussex Street side of the building, according to Gerris.

“It’s simplistic but it makes a statement,” said Ted Glancey, quartermaster of VFW Post 340. “It’s a reminder to the residents of the town of Harrison of the sacrifice and service these men gave to their nation.”

Cost of the plaque was split between the Harrison Veterans Association and the FMBA. A similar plaque paying tribute to the military service undertaken by six members of Harrison Fire Department’s Engine Co. 1 is displayed in the lobby of Harrison Town Hall.

National service is a tradition that continues to be honored by members of the HFD. As noted by FMBA President Eric Hausmann, “a third of our current membership are veterans,” mostly from the extended war on global terrorism.

“Ever since the game at Red Bull Arena (on Sept.

15, won by Kearny, 3-1), we knew we were going to play them again,” said Sowe, the All-State striker. “We just knew that we were somehow going to play them again.

I hate losing and hated losing that game. I think we gave them a little too much respect that day.”

The win in September marked the seventh straight time that Kearny had won the showdown between the neighboring rivals dating back to 2013, when the two schools met in the finals of the Hudson County Tournament.

“Once the seeds came out and we knew we were going to play them in the semifinals, we were

ready,” Sowe said. “I said to my teammates, ‘We have to win this game.’”

Sowe did everything he could to bring the Blue Tide home from Caven Point Cochrane Stadium in Jersey City victorious.

Sowe scored three goals, leading the Blue Tide to the shocking 4-3 upset win over the defending champions. In fact, Kearny had captured four of the previous five Hudson County titles, but not this year.

Sowe wouldn’t see to it.

“We’ve never had a single player who had a game like that,” Harrison head coach Mike Rusek said of Sowe’s performance. “We’ve had some great players over the years, but none that did what Omar did in those conditions. And the rest of the team just feeds off a player like that.”

That especially included not reaching a milestone like scoring 100 goals for her career.

“I never expected to reach this,” Smith said after scoring two goals last Thursday in a 4-0 win over Wood-Ridge, giving her 100 goals for her career. “I think last year, I

set myself up for the 100, but I didn’t think it would happen. I know not a lot of people have done it, so my hard work has paid off. I’m real proud of myself.”

Smith became the first soccer player from North Arlington, boy or girl, to reach the coveted 100-goal plateau.

Two years ago, Zoe Steck of Nutley scored her 100th goal before heading on to play at UConn. But it’s definitely rarified air that Smith joined last week.

She scored 16 as a sophomore before hurting the knee.

“She was on pace for a very good season,” Farinola said.

“Then she tore her ACL.” Smith worked diligently in rehabilitating the knee to be able to return to 100 percent health-wise for her junior season.

“I didn’t know if I’d get back,” Smith said. “I worked hard in physical therapy and I think that made me stronger.”

Smith didn’t know how she would react after hurting the knee.

“At first, I thought it would make me more hesitant,” Smith said. “But it actually helped, because I started using my left leg more because I couldn’t use my right. I became good with both feet.”

“It doesn’t bother me at all,” Smith said. “I really think it’s made me a better player actually.”

Smith said that she kept a mental countdown of how close she was to the milestone.

“I was actually getting pretty excited that I was so close,” Smith said. “It actually came quicker than I expected.

But after I had the hat trick against Hasbrouck Heights (last Monday), I knew I was close.”

Smith reached the milestone by scoring twice in the first half last week against WoodRidge.

“She’s scored in every single game this year,” Farinola said. “I’m really impressed with that. It shows her consistency. And every goal she’s scored has been a meaningful goal. She expects to be a factor in every game.”

Farinola loves what Smith does when she’s not scoring goal after goal.

“She’s become a great teammate and a great leader,” Farinola said. “She’s even a good player when she doesn’t have the ball. She’s a confident kid, very outgoing. She has that quiet confidence you

like in a player. She’s a leader and one of our captains. She’s just as quick to pass the ball as she is to shoot. She also does all the stuff that people don’t see, so she’s a lead-byexample type.”

Farinola paused to reflect on the enormity of the accomplishment.

“It’s really impressive,” Farinola said. “I never had a kid come close to it before. It shows the effort it takes. It’s impressive to see what she’s done to come back.”

Smith said that she still has four games remaining to pursue her own record of 36 goals in a season. She now has 29.

Smith has a few college offers to mull over after the season. Schools like Georgian Court, Caldwell, Bloomfield, Kean and St. Peter’s are in the running for her services. She would like to study psychology in college and perhaps become a child psychologist after she earns her degree.

Smith said that she realized how important of a milestone the 100th goal was when she started to receive congratulations from all over the soccer world.

“I realized that not a lot of people can get where I am,” Smith said. “I realize how big of an accomplishment it is.

It’s a pretty wild feeling.”

“It’s been incredible to coach her, it really has,” Farinola said. “She always showed potential, then she had the injury, then she had to come back. She’s scored in every game. It’s all been incredible. She comes from a great family. She’s someone we’re all going to look at and marvel at what she’s been able to do.”

“He just rifled it in,” Rusek said. “It was like a line drive in baseball that just kept getting higher and higher. Our confidence just soared when Omar scored that goal.”

The confidence then had to be sky high when Maicol Diaz scored in the 35th minute, pushing the lead to 2-0. As anyone knows, the most important goal to get in soccer is the second goal, because it changes all momentum and strategy. In a top-flight competitive game like a county semifinal between two serious rivals, the 2-0 lead was gigantic.

Rusek said that there wasn’t a motivational rah-rah speech before this game.

“We all thought we could play better,” Rusek said. “The other game was a month ago.

A lot has changed in that time.

We’ve come a long way as the season has progressed. I also hope that we’ve become a better team. We weren’t as good then as we are now. We wanted to show everyone we were better, so this was a great chance to go out and prove it.”

Sowe knew that scoring early made all the difference in the

world.

“We knew that they were never down by two goals before, so we felt if we hit them hard and hit them early, they wouldn’t be expecting that,” Sowe said. “Once we got the first goal, we had to keep going to get the second one. We didn’t change the game plan. We just went out, played good soccer and had some fun. We had to stay together and stay more confident and we would get the result.”

Kardinals fine striker Ryan Silva did his best to keep the Kardinals (12-3-1) in the match.

He scored via a penalty kick right before the half ended, slicing the lead to 2-1. In the end, Silva had three goals for the Kards.

But the Blue Tide scored the third goal, the second of Sowe’s tallies, to push the lead back up to 3-1.

The two teams traded goals, before Sowe put the finishing touches on the game and the Kards, winning 4-3. The victory has enabled Harrison to advance to the HCT title game for the first time since winning the crown in 2013. The Blue Tide will face Union City in the finals Thursday night at Caven Point Cochrane Field on the campus of the Ed “Faa” Ford Memorial Athletic Complex in Jersey City at 7 p.m.

Harrison senior Omar Sowe has been on a mission of late, evidenced by his three-goal performance in the Hudson County Tournament semifinals against rival Kearny last week.

Sowe and the Blue Tide face Union City for the county crown Thursday night.

One thing’s for sure: Harrison will be ready.

“We knew the game against Kearny was very important,

but this game is now for a championship,” Sowe said.

“Every loss, I take with me every day. When we lost to them last year (3-2 also at Caven Point), I blamed myself. I said, ‘Next year, we have to come out and face them straight up.

It was a very big win, because I feel like we never get the recognition against a team like Kearny. We never get the recognition we deserve. We beat one of the best teams in the state.”

Sowe now has 20 goals and 18 assists on the season. He’s a bit behind last year’s pace – and he knows it.

“He’s still responsible for a majority of our goals, either with goals or assists,” Rusek said. “He’s the main offensive weapon. Whenever we have a big game, Omar seems to rise to the occasion. I just hope he continues what he’s doing.”

“We always hoped we would be a better team as the season progressed,” Rusek said. “We didn’t use it for motivation. It means a lot to this team to be recognized. We just thought we could play better than we did the first time. But it means a lot for us to be in the county finals. We’re one of the smallest schools in the county, yet we’re there. It’s a nice accomplishment.”

On to the county finals against another state-ranked opponent. It should be a barnburner.

“We’re so much happier in October than we were in September,” Rusek said. “We went through a lot of ups and downs.

But this gives us a real good feeling moving forward.”

While Russo plays a big role offensively, he admits that he’s a much better defensive player. Russo has collected 79 tackles in eight games with one interception, two fumble recoveries and four sacks.

“He’s definitely a defensive player on the next level,” said DiGregorio, who was a running backs coach at Princeton University before coming back to coach his alma mater Nutley in two stints (2004 through 2011 and 2017 until now). “I can see him as a weak side linebacker or an outside linebacker. He’s definitely a smaller school guy, a (NCAA Division) I-AA kind of guy). It all depends on how it shakes out.”

Russo plans on running track during the

outdoor spring season.

He’s a sprinter, competing in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, as well as taking on hurdles for the first time last spring.

“I liked it a lot,” Russo said. “It was nice.”

Russo cannot comprehend that his football career at Nutley is drawing to a close. The Maroon Raiders face Caldwell this weekend and will get a consolation game from the NJSIAA in two weeks.

“It’s crazy how fast time has flown by,” Russo said. “One minute, I

was a freshman and the next thing I know I’m a senior. It’s crazy to have it all come to an end.”

Maybe Russo has one more interception return in his bag of tricks.

“That would be really nice,” Russo said. “I just wish I could have done more. Playing for Nutley has meant so much to me.”

Russo doesn’t have to worry about doing much more. Despite the losing record, Vinnie Russo will always go down as one of the most versatile performers in Nutley football history.

Has Belleville struck a deal for Valley redevelopment?

BELLEVILLE –A deal the township struck in December 2016 with prospective redevelopers of a Valley site at Terry and Cortlandt streets for 158 new apartments that was once withdrawn is now back on the table, following an Oct. 9 vote at a meeting of the the Belleville Township Council.

Asked to clarlify the situation, Mayor Michael Melham said that after the redeveloper designated by the prior township administration – 91 Terry Street Urban Renewal LLC – failed to make a contractual payment to the township, the council properly voted Feb. 27 to kill the redevelopment agreement with the firm.

But it turned out – based on a review of the applicable documents by township attorney Steven J. Martino – that an improper notice of default was issued by the prior township counsel, prompting the redeveloper to sue Belleville.

So, to remedy the reported defective notice and to protect the township’s legal position, Belleville has taken back its original action to rescind the redevelopment agreement with the expectation that a revised default notice will be issued, Melham said.

That new notice, Melham said, will give 91 Terry Street Urban Renewal LLC 60 days to make the required payment – the first installment on a previously negotiated PILOT (payment in lieu of taxes) agreement – or face removal as the designated redeveloper for the project.

Melham said the door remains open for the firm to “make the payment” and then, presumably, proceed with its plans to build the new housing units – which were bitterly opposed by a group of residents who maintained that the project would displace several commercial operations and would burden the township with increased residential density.

Asked if he supported the 4-story project, Melham said that while “I have my hesitation over the proposed [design] layout, I am bound by the [redevelopment] agreement,” assuming the proper payment is received by the township.

If people are unhappy over the outcome, “don’t hang it on the Melham administration,” the mayor said.

Melham was unable to say how much money was due the township from the PILOT agreement.

Assuming that the revised default notice has already gone out or is about to be issued, Melham said the township should learn whether the project is a go or not by midDecember.

In either case, Melham said, he’s staying neutral on the situation. Any implication that his administration is going out of its way to “revive” the project is “categorically false,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, in other business conducted at the Oct. 9 meeting, the Township Council voted to: • Pay $60,000 as the township’s share of a negotiated settlement of a suit by former township court administrator Cheryl Jeannette against the township, Kevin Esposito (in his former capacity as township manager), current court administrator Yara Acosta and deputy court administrator Roberta Almeida.

• Apply to the state Department of Environmental Protection’s Green Acres program for an additional $1 million to turf Belleville High School’s Municipal Stadium athletic field and provide a new track. The township has already received $1 million for the project, which could cost $4 millionplus.

Both women were charged with shoplifting and sent to the county jail. Police said Mitchell was additionally charged with theft (credit cards) and was wanted on five Newark warrants ($6,500 total bail), an Elizabeth warrant ($250) and a Clark warrant ($500).

85% of the current year’s premium. Any premium costs in excess of this amount shall be borne by the participating teacher.

The [teachers’ union] shall designate the dental plan.”

Additional costs for family and dependent coverage “shall be paid for by the teacher electing this option.”

Generally speaking, the district will provide a $5 prescription co-pay plan for eligible employees at “no more than 85% of the current year’s premium.”

In other business conducted at the Oct. 15 meeting, the school board: • Hired Kearny attorney Cecilia M. E. Lindenfelser — who sits on the Kearny Board of Education — as board counsel at $150 per hour, as needed.

• Accepted Corbett’s recommendation to hire Harold Kenner as a music teacher to replace a teacher who resigned and to hire Margaret Jackson as an art teacher in place of another teacher who was dismissed.

Sabrina was raised by the-late Mary E. Walker.

Sabrina died unexpectedly on Oct. 13, 2018, at University Hospital, Newark.

She was 45.

Moving to New Jersey in 1976, Sabrina was educated in the Passaic school system until her junior year. She had several trades, and worked for several agencies. She also worked briefly at Kean College.

Her last place of employment was All Events Creation.

Sabrina was a people person — no matter who you were or what nationality you were, she treated everyone the same.

Sabrina had a big heart, with a bright smile to match. She loved unconditionally. Family was her pride and joy.

Sabrina loved all her nieces and nephews, but she had a special bond with her niecy Shay, Tee and her Jazzy. The memories can go on and on, because Shake touched so many lives. Sabrina was a kind, caring, fun and loving
