BIANCHI DIES AT 77 Long-time owner of Pal Joey’s served as N.A. mayor from 2014 to 2018

ORTH ARLINGTON MAYOR JOSEPH BIANCHI, who spent the last four years as leader of the small southern Bergen County borough and who was to face re-election in just a few short weeks, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, following a brave battle with Sept. 11, 2001-related cancer.

He was 77.

A statement issued by Borough Administrator Stephen LoIacono brought greater light to Bianchi’s service at Ground Zero following the terror attacks of 17 years ago. While some knew he spent time there, most didn’t.

“He stayed at the site not because he had to, but because it was the right thing to do,” LoIacono wrote of the long-time North Arlington volunteer firefighter. “We thought he had conquered the illness — that is why the news of his passing was more difficult to hear.”

While it did appear he conquered the illness, Bianchi was, at times, appearing to slow down some at local events. At times, he would need assistance getting to podiums to speak. But that never stopped him from doing what he loved — and that was being of service to the community he was born in, raised in and where he lived every single one of his 77 years on this earth.

PASCRELL TAKES WALKING

I

t’s not often that when you take a stroll along Kearny Avenue you bump into a member of the United States Congress. Yet such was the case Friday, Oct. 12, when U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. took a walking tour of the Kearny Public Library and several businesses from 11 a.m. to noon.

Pascrell’s New Jersey Press Officer Stephen Tighe, a local himself, invited The Observer to take the tour with the congressman. To say it was an intriguing hour would be an understatement. We had a chance to watch Pascrell in action — and one would hardly realize that he’ll turn 82 on Jan. 25.

The former Mayor of Paterson (1990-1997), who has represented the 9th Congressional District since 2013, counts parts of Kearny, North Arlington and Lyndhurst, on top of 30+ other municipalities, in his territory. He became a local representative after redistricting in

The first stop on the walking tour was Domingo’s Bakery. Pascrell spent time speaking with the owner, Domingo Martin, and the owner’s dad, also Domingo Martin. His first order of business was — as he did

with other business owners — to explain federal programs designed to help small-business owners.

“Take a look at this,” Pascrell said.

“There are a lot of programs to help businesses like yours. Here’s my business card (he reached inside his suit jacket pocket to find the cards). If you have any questions or concerns, call my office and we’ll help you.”

On a wall at the bakery/café was a sign that read “Pascrell for Congress.” He was clearly in comfortable territory. But Pascrell still took time to walk up to patrons at the establishment, sometimes saying, “Hi, I am Congressman Bill Pascrell,” but other times, he was much more laid back, introducing himself simply as “Bill.”

“He does that all the time,” Tighe said.

Clearly, he’s in his element when he is among people.

He listened intently as the two Domingos shared how they got into business.

Then, prior to departing, Pascrell ordered three pastries to go.

“I’m paying for these — full price — so don’t give me any breaks,” Pascrell said.

And with that, a clerk rang him up — at full price — just as anyone else would be charged.

As we walked to the next business, Pascrell asked how things were going in Kearny. We reminded

At lunch, it was hard to believe that this was someone who is in line to the U.S. presidency — albeit a long, distant line — because he was so down to earth.

him there’s a lot of ongoing redevelopment, at which time he noted how impressed he was by that. He also asked how Mayor Alberto Santos was doing (Santos was invited to take the tour with the Congressman, Tighe said, but he declined because he already had a prior commitment.)

Often a staunch supporter of public safety, the ranking member of the Ways and Means Committee asked how things were going at the Kearny Fire Department and the Kearny Police Department. We suggested he contact Chiefs Steven Dyl (KFD) and George King (KPD) to hear for himself.

“I’ll do that,” the Congressman said.

Be prepared for a call, chiefs. A member of Congress wants to know how things are going in your departments.

“Kevin, do you live here?” he asked at lunch. “Yes,” I told him. “Since 1985. I left for a while but I came back.”

Pascrell reminded us that his work has led to federal grants to many local fire departments — including right here in Kearny.

Following a brief stop at a hair salon, the next stop was at a pizzeria for a brief bite to eat. The place was packed with scores of students from Kearny High School who

Construction worker injured A local construction site mishap seriously injured a worker Friday, Oct. 12.

The Harrison Police Department said it responded to 700 Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard South, at 11:30 a.m., where new residential buildings are going up on the former Hartz Mountain property on a report of an industrial accident.

Police said the worker reportedly fell four stories to the main floor of the building under construction where he was impaled on a piece of rebar protruding from the concrete,

with the rebar having pierced his hip from front to back.

Members of the HPD and Harrison Fire Department cut the rebar from the round to free the 23-year-old worker, police said.

The victim was taken to University Hospital, Newark, where he underwent surgery.

His condition was not readily available at press time. It is expected that agents of the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration will investigate the mishap, police said.

were on lunch break. Most of the kids seemed to recognize someone important had just walked in — but they mostly went about their business of eating and staring intently at their phones.

One girl, a junior, asked who Pascrell was.

“No way!” she shouted after she learned her

Congressional rep was in the same place for lunch as she was. “Can I ask him for a selfie?”

She decided against the selfie, instead taking it all in as it happened, rather than via a photo, as Pascrell again explained federal small-business programs to the owner.

“Pretty common — pretty common,” Pascrell replied. “When people leave Jersey they always wind up coming back. I can see why you wanted to come back to Kearny. This is a great thriving and diverse community.”

Just before one final stop, Pascrell noted that he hit traffic on his way to West Hudson.

“There was a lot of traffic on the Turnpike,” he said.

“We may go back through Harrison.”

Guess he found traffic on the way back to his office, too.

Upon becoming mayor, he initiated the North Arlington Renaissance program, where he sought to make the community a stronger and more vibrant place to live, work and play. He worked hard to make North Arlington a clean and safe municipality.

Aware that redevelopment along Ridge Road would help business owners like himself develop a stronger clientele

so their shops would be more viable, when he took over as mayor, 16 storefronts were vacant on Ridge Road. There is only one now.

When FedEx was looking for a site, he put the “open for business” sign on Borough Hall and moved heaven and earth to get their approvals in just four months. He offered no tax breaks or concessions to them. He thought the fact that the Borough of North Arlington had no new large ratable since 1995 was unfair to homeowners whose taxes rising.

But not even a year ago, the FedEx facility opened amid great fanfare, and it was partly his diligence that led to the shipping giant setting up

Under his leadership, both Time and Money magazines named North Arlington as one of the greater communities to live and raise a family in the entire country. In an interview with The Observer earlier this year, Bianchi said: “We already knew North Arlington was a great place to live. Now the entire country knows — and I couldn’t be more proud of our community here.”

Perhaps even more stunning — especially given the tax rates in nearby communities — North Arlington saw a 0% tax increase over the last two years, something else, about

which, Bianchi was proud to boast.

“Find me another community that can boast this,” he said several months ago.

Despite having several opponents in the 2018 general election, it is evident just how much Bianchi meant to this community, regardless of what political party to which one belonged. Mark Yampaglia, Bianchi’s Democrat opponent, and former Councilman Albert Granell, also a Democrat running as an independent candidate, took time to reflect on that life that was Bianchi’s.

Both served with him on the Borough Council.

Yampaglia, in honoring Bianchi, says he’s unsure of how the rest of the 2018 campaign for the North Arlington mayoralty, will proceed.

“The passing of Mayor Joseph Bianchi is a tragic

and devastating loss for our community and pulls at the very fabric of North Arlington,” Yampaglia said. Mayor Bianchi’s decades of public service as a volunteer firefighter, member and chairman of the North Arlington Planning Board as well as his elected service as a councilman and mayor are to be admired and praised. I have had the distinct pleasure and honor to serve with Mayor Bianchi during most of my time as a borough councilman and I always found the mayor to be bipartisan, independent and dedicated to the cause of honest an open government.

“I am temporarily suspending my campaign so that Mayor Bianchi’s passing is appropriately acknowledged … my deepest sympathies condolences are sincerely offered to his wife, children and extended family. I will reevaluate my efforts moving forward once this time of mourning has been completed.”

Granell echoed Yampaglia’s sentiments.

“It’s in times like this where one has to take a second and take a step back.

In this unstable political climate of back and forth, one looks for words to express the moment. Joe Bianchi was a North Arlington resident, a staple of the community — a family man, business owner, volunteer, councilman and

“I’ve known Joe Bianchi for many years. We served together as councilmen on the governing body for several years. While we didn’t always agree on the way to resolve the issues that North Arlington was facing. I always knew Joe loved North Arlington. There were so many things we did together for North Arlington on the governing body serving together — and for that I will always be grateful to Joe. “It’s a moment of sadness and we should all rally and support Catherine and Joe’s family at this time — as well as the community that has lost one of its leaders. Sharon and I share our thoughts and prayers to the entire Bianchi family.”

Bianchi and his wife, Cathy, operated Pal Joey’s, on Ridge Road, since 1966.

The mayor had also been a member of UNICO and Rotary.

grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

t seems like it happens multiple times a week in multiple municipalities in The Observer’s coverage area.

A police blotter comes out — and inevitably, there’s at least one report, sometimes multiple reports, where someone left their car doors unlocked, leading to a criminal breaking into said car, only to make off with cash, change, call phones, tablets, iPads, GPS units, car seats, strollers, credit cards, keys, etc.

And then follows another warning about how important it is for residents to lock their car doors when arriving home.

We can’t even begin to recall how many times Nutley Police Chief Thomas Strumolo and Public Safety Commissioner Al Petracco have issued such warnings through the NPD’s Public Information

doors at night, there’s a good chance someone outside your household knows this — and it going to burgle your vehicle.

Folks, these warnings come way too often. But they also come because far too many people simply don’t lock their cars — and continue to leave valuable electronics out for anyone to see overnight.

Would you seriously leave ten, $100 bills on your center console overnight?

Probably not.

Yet countless still leave their $1,000 iPhones or iPads in the same locations, only to find them missing a few hours later.

Please, folks, listen to the advice the NPD offers. Because the truth is, if you don’t, it won’t be long until you’re a victim.

Then comes the weeks like just a couple ago where there was a rash of car burglaries in Nutley — and with them, the usual warnings from Strumolo, Petracco and Montanari.

And while we absolutely and wholeheartedly commend them for issuing the warnings, which are beneficial not just for Nutley residents, but for all of The Observer’s readership, we can’t help but wonder: Are any locals paying attention to the warnings? Does anyone take the important advice offered and put it into action?

These irritating, petit crimes (like burglary to auto) are beyond avoidable. All it would take is listening to the if you do not lock your car

It’s a real disappointment how the court system handled Gina Neri’s case. It’s bad enough schools are not funded with enough money and dedicated teachers actually have to protest for better wages. Then you have people like Neri taking advantage of the school system and stealing money!

From seeing her yearly wages

($60,000 a year) she’s not struggling like most teachers are. And the sick part about this whole ordeal is the money she robbed went to personal benefit. I’m sure many Observer readers are wondering what kind of personal stuff Neri bought with $318.000.

That’s a lot of money just for personal stuff. I don’t want to take personal jabs at Neri, but she is a real

disgrace to our community. Stealing money from the Board Of Education is no different than stealing from the kids who attend these schools.

That’s about as low as one could go. She might have lucked out not having to do time in prison, but in our strong community, she will always be known as a disgrace.

obituaries@theobserver.com Vincenzina Marinaro Vincenzina Marinaro (nee D’Argenio) died quietly, surrounded by her loving family, on Oct. 8, 2018 at home.

She was 87.

Born in Lioni, Italy, she moved to Kearny in 1959.

Visiting was at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, Kearny. Mass was celebrated at St. Stephen’s Church, Kearny. Entombment was in Holy Cross Mausoleum, North Arlington.

Wife of the-late Tony Marinaro, she is survived by her children Carmine Marinaro, Phyllis Walters (Allan), Cora Hoch (Mitchell) and Tony Marinaro (Colleen). Sister of Emma Tarantino, Maria Oliviero and Gennaro D’Argenio, she is also survived by her grandchildren Zachary, Micayla, Dylan, Gianna, Allan and Victoria.

He was currently the Mayor of North Arlington.

Joe and his wife Cathy owned and ran Pal Joey’s Hair Salon on Ridge Road, North Arlington.

Joe was the beloved husband of Cathy (nee Furia) and dear father of Gina Choinski (Steve), Joseph Bianchi (Tina) and Anthony Bianchi (Kim). Brother of Robert Bianchi and the-late Frank Bianchi, he is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Edward T. McDonnell Edward T. McDonnell, 87, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2018, at Crestwood Manor, Whiting.

Ed began his career as a Jersey City firefighter in 1959 with Engine 17. He later transferred to headquarters before retiring in 1988. He returned to work as a Hudson County Court Officer in Jersey City for several years.

He was a member of Jersey

City Firefighters Association, Local 1066, IAFF and Whiting American Legion, Post No. 0502.

Edward is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rita (nee Nowicki) McDonnell ; his children, Colleen WieczorekMcDonnell (Frank), Ann Marie O’Leary (Chris), Rita Moumine, Thomas McDonnell (the late Linda), Edward McDonnell Jr. (Carol), Robert McDonnell, (Denise) and Kevin McDonnell (Alisa).

He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son, Kenneth McDonnell and two sisters, Joan Stewart and Rita Dowd/Lattucca.

She was born in Orange, and lived in Kearny for many years before moving to Rockaway Township 19 years ago.

Mrs. Yuille is survived by her children, Michael Yuille (Cathi) , Donna Yuille and Denise Cieslik (Alan) and one sister, Carmella Tyburski. She was the beloved grandmother of Justin, Dylan and Emma Rose Cieslik and Oscar Dominguez (Allison) and John and Deanna Yuille and great-grandmother of Kyle, Jake, Ryan and Sarah Dominguez along with a fifth great-grandchild due in January. She also leaves behind her sister-in-law Irene Yuille and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John Yuille and her parents, Michael Triano and Rose Polito.

Mary loved her family so much, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Slot machines and playing bingo gave her much joy as did game night with her

children and grandchildren.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

She danced beautifully this past August when she turned 102.

Mrs. LaHoff was a retired supervisor from RCA in Harrison. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed her trips to Atlantic City. She was married for 56 years to the-late Seymour (Steven-Jack) LaHoff.

He said the township manager advised him to put a hold on plans to hire marching bands until further notice.

Many local veterans rallied to support their comrade at the public meeting.

Asked about Steimel’s concerns last week, Mayor Michael Melham called the mix up “the craziest manufactured crisis I’ve seen,” adding that, “the thought of canceling the parade was never in play.”

While Melham acknowledged that “the township – in consultation with veterans organizations – is taking a more active role” in planning the annual event,” he asserted that his administration is “doubling down efforts” to support local veterans, with a more streamlined parade and a separate 5K run with proceeds dedicated to a scholarship for the child of a local veteran.

This year’s parade – slated for Sunday, Nov. 11 – will be shorter in length, Melham said, because “we found that a longer parade route was not conducive to the event” with spectator attendance dropping. He said the township is “making a strong pitch” to local clubs, organizations and the Board of Education to turn out for the event “to honor all who serve our military.”

And, Melham said, this year’s parade should be less costly to put on because the participating bands – which account for the biggest expense – have agreed to a price cut.

“All they’ve asked is for a contribution to cover their bus transportation, which we think is fair,” he said.

A staging and line-up for the parade will get underway at noon at the corner of Holmes Street and Union Avenue and marchers will step off at 1 p.m. sharp from Clearman Field at School No. 8, heading north on Union to Veterans’ Memorial Park at Union and Little

Street near Fewsmith Church.

Belleville High School students who participate will be eligible for $10 in “Belleville BUCKS (Being Upstanding Cooperative Kindhearted Students),” to be “cashed in” for age-appropriate rewards such as special activities, privileges and the like.

The township encourages all residents, clubs, organizations, civic groups and sports teams to participate. For more information, call 973-450-3345.

Meanwhile, the township will also offer a first-ever “Belleville Veterans Day Weekend 5K Run/Walk” on Saturday, Nov. 10, “dedicated to the men and women of Belleville who served in the U.S. military.”

Proceeds will go to a scholarship fund for a graduating Belleville senior who is the child of a Belleville veteran and for participating Belleville veterans’ organizations.

This will be a “disposable chip-timed event.”

There is a race fee plus a signup fee. The price increases after Nov. 9.

Entrants must pre-register, either by signing up online at runsignup.com/Race/NJ/ Belleville/BellevilleVeteransDay5K in advance, or in person on the day of the race, between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m., at Veterans Memorial Park, where the race will start at 9 a.m.

The route proceeds south on Union, turning right on Joralemon Street, then right on Franklin Avenue, right on Chestnut Street, right on Passaic Avenue and onto Division Avenue, left onto Nolton Street, right on Greylock Parkway and right on Union to the finish line at Veterans’ Memorial Park.

Among those who’ve already registered to run are Melham and Councilman Vincent Cozzarelli. Of 15 entries logged thus far, 10 are from Belleville, two from Nutley, one from Newark and two from Fair Lawn.

Harrison girls’ soccer: Trying to keep it loose in losing season The official record may read just 1-12, but the Harrison High School girls’ soccer team is still trying its collective best to keep their heads up and maintain a sense of pride and dignity.

“The season has been very difficult, but we’re still trying to have fun,” said Harrison first-year head girls’ soccer coach Kaitlyn Lima. “We’re keeping a positive attitude and having fun. We just keep coming back and we’re having fun.”

Lima, a former standout player first at Kearny High, then later New Jersey City University and St. Peter’s University, said that the upbeat approach begins with ideas both on and off the field.

“We start off by having fun games for warmups,” Lima said. “There’s a lot of team bonding with things that don’t even include soccer. We have pasta parties. We recently did an egg toss that was a lot of fun.”

But after defeating Ridgefield, 3-1, on Sept. 29, there hasn’t been a heck of a lot to cheer for.

“It’s been difficult, enduring some tough losses,” said Lima, whose team lost to Newark East Side at Red Bull Arena back on Sept. 15. “It’s been a learning experience for both me and the girls. But we all have to learn from it. One of our main goals was to improve. I think we’ve done that. We also wanted to build the program and I think we’ve done that.

We’ve worked hard since Day One. We have some freshmen who are going to develop.”

Lima said that she has seen some positive signs of late.

“We have more ball control now,” Lima said.

“We’re turning with the ball and moving forward.

And for the eighth time since the inception of the tourney in 2008, long-standing rivals Harrison and Kearny will meet.

And for the second straight year, the two teams will meet in the semifinal round and that match – for some ungodly reason – will be played at the Ed “Faa” Ford Memorial Complex on Cochrane Field in

Jersey City Thursday night at 7 p.m.

Regardless of the location, it’s a showdown that all soccer fans clamor for.

The two teams met in the Harrison Soccer Showdown at Red Bull Arena Sept. 15, with the Kardinals coming away with a 3-1 victory.

“It’s always exciting to play Harrison,” Kearny head coach Bill Galka said. “I know the kids are looking forward to it. It’s always great to play against our rival. The difference now is that it’s in a tournament situation.”

Vareja scored twice Saturday in the lopsided win over Bayonne. His production has been a shocker and has helped Galka to survive without a player like Escondon.

“It’s all about these kids finding their roles,” Galka said.

“We’ve been tinkering with our lineup all season.”I think this gave us time for the players to understand their roles.

I think the whole team has to function better. Things are on a positive right now. I’m happy with the way the kids have been playing.”

Rusek is also happy with the way that adapted to difficult places like Denver and Seattle and still came away with victories.

“We’re real happy to be where we are right now,” Rusek said. “Compared to where we were a month ago, it’s a nice change. I guess it takes a while to find the right mix. I’d like to have everything all set up by the time of the state tournament.”

Rusek is glad to have other players contributing, like Jairo Lima and Allan Melo, who have seven goals each.

“We can’t just be the Omar Sowe show,” Rusek said. “He’s fabulous, for sure, but he can’t

be the only one scoring. Jairo is a newcomer to us who has scored almost all of his goals in October. Melo was on the JV team last year, but he’s stepped up.”

So has Sowe’s little brother, sophomore Mustapha, who has six goals.

“We lost two games in a week and since then, we haven’t lost,” said Rusek, alluding to the Kearny and DwightEnglewood losses. When we played Kearny a month ago, we didn’t know what we were doing. We’ve come a long way since then. We’re hungry now for a good result against Kearny. But I feel better about the way we’re playing.”

Both coaches expressed dismay about the game being played in Jersey City.

“In my opinion, the game being played there loses 1,000 people who would have come if it was played in Kearny,” Rusek said.

“It takes a little bit of the excitement away,” Galka said. “If it were local, more people would come out.

Playing the game at Caven certainly dampens the excitement of it.”

But it’s still Kearny vs.

Harrison once again with a berth in the county final on the line. What’s to say this one is a barn burner?

Lyndhurst’s Castagnetti nothing but rock solid in net for Golden Bears

By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com The truth be told, the career of the finest girls’ goalkeeper in Lyndhurst High School history began innocently – as she believes – as a demotion for being a poor soccer player.

“When I was little, they always put the worst player in goal,” said Lyndhurst senior Isabella Castagnetti. “I was put all over the field, but I couldn’t run. I couldn’t do anything. So they put me in goal. I didn’t know

that I was the worst one. I just said, ‘Whatever you need, Coach.’ I was willing to do it.”

Castagnetti said that she tried her hands in a lot of sports growing up.

“When I was little, I tried a lot of things,” Castagnetti said.

“I played basketball and T-ball.

I played soccer and fell in love with the sport. It became my passion. I just love the aspect of team sports, playing on a team and being with a team. But I knew soccer was my passion.”

Now, almost 10 years later,

Castagnetti is as good as it gets in net. The Golden Bear senior has no peers in northern New Jersey.

“I don’t know where I would be if I wasn’t in goal,” Castagnetti said. “When I first started out, I didn’t like it too much, because all the action was all the way on the other side of the field and I was just standing there. Once I started playing, I started liking it. I understood the selflessness of being a goalie and the team value in it. I then had the commitment

“She has great feet,” Hykey said. “I’m at ease when we play the ball back to her at any point. She’s like a sweeper back there. She’s so technical with the ball. I know what she’s going to do. She’s just a pleasure to coach and watch.”

Castagnetti is not just a student of soccer. She’s also a great student in the classroom as well. She’s currently on pace to become the Lyndhurst Class of 2019 valedictorian with an astounding 4.37 grade point average.

“I’ve put a lot of hard work in my school work,” said Castagnetti, who has already declared her intentions to play soccer at The College of the Holy Cross next fall. “I have to keep up my school work and I want to keep it up.”

Castagnetti decided upon Holy Cross when she was just a sophomore.

“I knew I wanted to go either Ivy League or Patriot League (where Holy Cross resides),” Castagnetti said.

“When I went on my unofficial visit there, I told my dad that I could see myself playing there one day. It’s a good athletic school and a good academic school. It was definitely a sigh of relief to make the decision.

Even though I was committed, I had to keep on top of my studies. I still had to train hard.”

Castagnetti is unsure, but she believes that she will major in biochemistry in college with medical school a strong possibility.

“I think my degree will give me options,” she said.

Castagnetti said that the shutout streak was nice as it was happening, but the pressure to keep it going began to mount.

“I wanted to keep it going,” Castagnetti said. “When you have a streak like that, people tend to look at the goalie first.

I really didn’t take notice of it until it was like five or six straight. Then it became a thing with the defense. I kept saying, ‘We can do this.’ It was broken after 10 straight. As we kept getting shutouts, the defense really came together.

We’re always on the same page and we push to work harder.”

The Golden Bears’ defensive corps includes center backs Maggie Fadera and Gia Estrella, along with defenders Rachel Bocage, Alex Tortorella and Julia McCann.

Bocage has been a teammate of Castagnetti since they were eight years old.

“I attribute the success of that streak to the defense,” Castagnetti said. “It’s not just me.”

“She’s a rare specimen,” Hykey said. “She’s been like a coach back there. She says the right things and does things the right way. She takes pride in our defense. She wants a shutout every game. It’s what we strive for. We’re all on the same page. It’s been pretty cool to watch. There’s no one that’s going to be like this kid.

We’re going to talk about her for a very long time. She’s just a special kid. She’s definitely come into her own and it’s been wild watching her grow and mature.”

The Golden Bears have yet another Castagnetti on the roster – freshman midfielder Francesca, Isabella’s younger sister.

“It’s been really awesome having Francesca with us this year,” Castagnetti said. “I never had the opportunity to play with her before. Seeing her every day has been tremendous. We have that chemistry

together. I’m glad she came out for the team. I’m excited for her, especially since she’s my little sister. I want her to have fun. We used to have little fights growing up, but now since we’re on the same team, we’ve become really close and having her on the team has made us even closer.”

There’s one thing that’s left for Castagnetti to conquer.

“Rachel (Bocage) and I talked just recently and we knew that this is our last year to win a state tournament,” Castagnetti said. “If we ever had a chance, this is the team

to do it. It’s our end goal. It’s bound to happen.”

Needless to say, this season has been a blast for the kid who was once stuck in goal because she thought she wasn’t good enough. Well, she’s more than good enough now.

“It has been so much fun,” Castagnetti said. “The team chemistry has been tremendous this year. I really want to go out with a bang. I’m also excited for the next step of my life. I’m going to continue to work hard every single day.”

That’s the true legacy of Isabella Castagnetti.

Anne was a professional ballroom dancer and she and her husband won the 1949 Harvest Moon Ball, Viennese Waltz Dance Championship.

She had 54 shows at the Roxy Theatre and appeared with Theresa Brewer and Ed Sullivan. She even danced once with Fred Astaire.

Michael J. Sopko Michael J. Sopko, 80 of Lyndhurst died Oct. 10, 2018.

A Funeral Service was celebrated at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, Kearny. Interment was in Hillside Cemetery, Lyndhurst.

Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Michael lived in Kearny before moving to Lyndhurst. He worked as a builder for Sopko Brothers in Kearny for many years.

Michael was the former husband to Concetta Sopko, and was predeceased by his dear companion Joan Rainey. He was the loving father of Michelle Marino, Lizette Sopko, Christine Christopher and Jeannine Sopko; dear grandfather of six; and great-grandfather of two. He is also survived by his brothers Paul and John Sopko.

Former wife of Donald Sullivan, she is survived by her children Scott, Keith and Melissa Sullivan, her sisters Mayra Clifford, Dania Tetla and Suzanne Geidratis along with her grandchildren Shawn and Mason.

Wife of the late Robert Ryan, she was the mother of Barbara Davitt, Robert Ryan, Eleanor Few, Patrick Ryan and Michael Ryan.

She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her granddaughter Jessica.

She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was 97.

Edward was born Sept.

1, 1921, in Harrison to Catherine O’Brien and Edward Maher. He was the oldest of seven siblings — John, Matt, Billy, Tommy, Margaret and Catherine.

He served in the Army Air Force during World War II and later became a Harrison cop for many years.

Ed married Marie Briese in 1947 and they had three children — Edward

(deceased) Joan and Robert.

They divorced many years later and he married his current wife Blanche in 1990 and became a stepfather to Denyce, Connie and Al. They lived in many different states through the years — California, Ohio, Georgia, and his last residence was in Idaho.

Blanche and Ed were together until the very end.

Ed had a son-in-law Dominick who is married to his daughter Joan and they had two children Jason (deceased) and Allison.

Jason gave Ed his first greatgrandchild, Amanda, and his last great-grandchild, Olivia.

Allison gave him the only great-grandson in the middle — Justin. Ed had two daughters-in- law, Lois who was married to his oldest son Edward and Debbie who is married to his youngest son Robert, who have two children Andrew and Elyse.

Ed also had many nieces and nephews that he loved very much. Ed was a one of kind guy and will be missed by all forever.
