We found out about this pair from one’s dad.

Ray Lopez, a detective with the Kearny Police Department, came to the office a few weeks ago to let us know about his daughter and her friend. We knew we had a story right away — and a big one, at that.

But we never could have envisioned just how talented

these two 16-year-olds are.

Enter Giuliana Evangelista and Alyssa Lopez. Both just began their penultimate year at KHS. Evangelista says the motivation for writing the book spans back to the pair’s freshman year — in, of all classes, geometry.

“That year, we found geometry was very easy to do,” Evangelista said.

“It came easy to us, so we finished early a lot.”

And best of all — the two teens hope for one other thing.

“We do want to make money,

too,” Lopez said.

And by the looks of things — they should be doing a lot of that over the next few months and years.

in-class work ahead of time, Evangelista and Lopez would get together and they came up with the concept of writing a work of fiction. (We’re not going to give away many details about the book because we hope you’ll purchase one to ensure the two entrepreneurs are successful.)

“When we began, we didn’t think of it ever being published,” Evangelista said.

Instead, there was a plan to post the book online — to do it all for fun. But somewhere around writing the book’s 13th chapter — it was the most challenging one for them to write — they decided to go ahead to try to get the book printed. “‘Let’s just do this,’” Evangelista recalled the two friends saying to each other.

And that’s exactly what they did. As of Sept. 1, the book, called “Hidden Dimensions: What Will Be the Cost of Survival?” is now available at amazon.com and at some Barnes & Noble bookstores.

On Sept. 15, Evangelista and Lopez will be at the Kearny

Public Library from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a book signing. You’ll be able to purchase the book there if you haven’t done so already.

In-between writing, Evangelista is a past winner of the Optimists’ annual oratorical contest, writes for the KHS newspaper, is a member of the school’s book club, the library council and the Christian-based Alpha & Omega club. Lopez is a member of all of those same clubs except for the Alpha & Omega.

Lopez says one of the biggest challenges in co-authoring a book was character development.

“There are six major characters — and each has its own personality,” Lopez said. “We had to agree on traits, on the specifics of the personalities. But we got there.”

In addition to the trilogy, Lopez says the pair hopes to also write a spin-off from the original series. She says the pair worked on everything from conceptualization to finding someone to read and review the book.

KPD: Oh, the treasures all around us

n Aug. 30 at 3:15 a.m., KPD Officers John Fearon, Jose Castillo and Matthew Knighton responded to the area of Tappan Street and Davis Avenue on a citizen’s

report of a man attempting to enter parked cars. Police said Fearon located an individual fitting the suspect’s description and developed probable cause to arrest him.

Lamar Cox, 37, of Elizabeth, was sent to the Hudson County Jail on a warrant charging burglary (to one car), theft and

criminal-attempted burglary (to a second car).

At 9:58 p.m., Officer Matthew Lopez responded to a report of a dispute in the roadway at the intersection of Chestnut Street and Quincy Avenue, where he found a group of men and women shoving each other. While exiting his car, police said, Lopez saw Michael Alves, 33, of Kearny, punch two women in the face and summarily arrested him.

The other parties told Lopez that they all knew each other and were having an argument that escalated. [Over what, we don’t know.]

Alves was sent to the county jail on two counts of simple assault.

Aug. 29

Officers Nicholas Funk and Christos Manolis responded to the Wawa lot on a 9:40 a.m. citizen’s report of possible drug activity inside a black Honda with New York plates. Apparently, no drugs were found, but police said passenger Ramon F. Moya, 30, of Newark, still ended up in jail when he was found to have three warrants: Linden ($1,000 for hindering apprehension); Lyndhurst ($300 for shoplifting) and Kearny ($600 for drug possession).

Moya was additionally charged with another hindering-apprehension count — for allegedly giving Funk and Manolis a false name when initially questioned — and for failure to wear a seatbelt.

••• At 8:54 p.m., Sgt. Tom Pontrella and Officers Castillo, Knighton and Anthony Oliveira responded to a multi-family home on Devon Street on a report of a dispute where one party was

armed with a knife. Upon arrival, the officers were told the landlord and an adult male tenant had had a heated argument and shoving match outside the house, after which both parties returned to their apartments.

Police said they contacted the 36-year-old tenant, who further reported that after he returned to his apartment, his landlord, Rafael Cortez, 52, of the Bronx, kicked in his door while holding a folding knife and threatening him and then punched a hole in the apartment wall.

Cortez was arrested and charged on a summons with criminal mischief, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon and making terroristic threats.

Aug. 30

At 8:13 p.m., Dets. Cesar Negron and Michael Andrews and Officers Jonathan Dowie and David Bush pulled over a vehicle at Belgrove Drive and Halstead Street for passing other cars on the right and at high speed. Police said driver Taree Howell, 28, of East Orange, admitted that his license was revoked and, when he was asked to step from the vehicle, officers observed an opened brick of heroin in the passenger compartment. Reportedly protruding from this package were several wax folds stamped “YouTube.”

Since both Howell and passenger, Kwasi Mack, 22, of Newark, denied ownership of the heroin, both were arrested for possession. Police said Howell was also found to possess $504 cash while Mack was carrying three oxycodone pills and $163 cash.

At KPD HQ, during an additional pre-incarceration search, police said a Ziploc bag containing eight wax folds of heroin, stamped “The Best,” were found secreted in the lining of Howell’s waistband. Police said he also was found to have three Newark warrants totaling $2,050.

Both men were charged with possession of heroin, drug possession with intent to distribute, intent to distribute in a school zone and near a public park and possession of drug paraphernalia. Howell was additionally charged with driving while revoked, unlicensed driving, careless driving, improper passing and failure to signal. The two were held in the county jail.

New industry eyed for Main Street in Belleville

By Ron Leir Special to The Observer BELLEVILLE – A longtime industrial property in Belleville’s Valley section is being targeted for possible taking by the township.

On Aug. 14, the township governing body voted to authorize the Belleville Planning Board to conduct a preliminary investigation to determine whether 705-757 Main St. — known as the Belleville Industrial Center — is a “condemnation area in need of redevelopment.”

The property — known historically as 681 Main St. — is bounded by Main Street to the east, a railroad right-ofway to the south and a private drive/ road to the north.

Now the Planning Board is being called on to produce a map reflecting the boundaries of the proposed redevelopment area, conduct public hearings into whether the property satisfies the statutory criteria for redevelopment areas and to present its findings to the mayor and Township Council.

No timetable was fixed for when the Planning Board should report back to the governing body.

Neither Mayor Michael Melham nor township manager Mauro Tucci were available to explain why the township

would want to get control of a property that is known to have a history of environmental issues — particularly when the township could get stuck with a potentially costly cleanup bill.

Township tax records show that the property, just south of the Nutley border and parallel to Rt. 21, comprises 15.24 acres and generated nearly $485,000 in real estate taxes in 2017.

Among the current tenants that occupy space at the Belleville Industrial Center are a fabric warehouse, trucking terminal, several cabinet shops, autobody repair, liquor store and café.

Many years prior, the location served as a tannery where skins and hides of animals were chemically treated to produce leather and that treatment process involved toxic substances like mercury, according to local businessman and civic activist Jeff Mattingly.

“That facility is extremely polluted,” Mattingly said, not only from the tanning process but also from “being located next to an industrial highway for many years.”

An LSRP (Licensed Site Remediation Professional) — Engineering & Land Planning Associates of High Bridge — has been assigned to monitor cleanup efforts at the site, according to the N.J. Department of Environmental

Protection.

Mattingly and others suspect the governing body may be looking to convert the property from its current industrial use to supporting residential development — which they view as an alarming prospect.

Getting the property cleaned up is one thing, Mattingly said, but “to potentially remove productive industrial programs” in favor of more housing in an already cramped township would be misguided, he added.

Aside from piling onto already overtaxed municipal services, Mattingly said, developing new homes would expose those residents to safety concerns since the targeted property lies just to the north of “an incredibly sensitive infrastructure — the Williams Transco natural gas pipeline.”

Whether the newly-elected township mayor and his administration will actually be pursuing a residential makeover of the site remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, the governing body is busying itself with other matters: • It took preliminary steps to create an “Office of the Township Attorney” under which there shall be no overlapping of duties between the positions of assistant township

attorney (whose yearly pay will rise from $65,000 this year to $67,626 in 2020) and municipal prosecutor (whose salary will go from $35,000 to $36,414 by 2020). Up to now, one person did both jobs (at a rate of pay that would have reached $68,903 by 2020). During the prior administration, outside legal fees totaled in excess of $400,000 and the current administration reportedly feels it can save money by delegating some legal work to the assistant attorney.

• It authorized a legal settlement with former Municipal Court Administrator Cheryl Jeannette (cq), who was suspended by the township in April 2013. Neither the township nor the state Division of the Courts would discuss the case at the time. The township has not released terms of the settlement.

• It introduced an ordinance directing that municipal parking spaces be reserved on the north side of the Public Safety annex for the township attorney, construction code official, court administrator, tax collector and health director.

• It permitted the county to install a “pedestrian-activated, rectangular and rapid-flashing beacon and all associated striping and signage … in front of The Chandelier [catering hall] at 340 Franklin Ave.”

ELEVISION WEATHER forecasters have a great job, don’t they?

What other profession can you think of where one is paid — often handsomely — and it barely matters whether they get it right or, for that matter sometimes, even close?

It’s hard to even think of such a profession. But in the world of meteorology, especially on TV and radio, these guys and gals get it wrong so often that it’s not even funny.

Take Labor Day weekend for example.

The forecasts made on TV and radio were laughable looking back. The prediction was that conditions would be miserable.

As we know, now, they weren’t.

But the problem isn’t that they often get it wrong — it’s that there is no accountability.

EDITORIAL a business owner, whether it’s a restaurant, a store, whatever — and the final unofficial weekend of summer calls for a horrible forecast.

But then, the weather is actually fairly good.

How inherently unfair is it for business owners — who often rely on good weather — when something like this occurs?

We were told of countless businesses that suffered over the Labor Day weekend because people stayed away.

For some of these businesses, Labor Day weekend crowds determine whether they make or or break it for the season — or even the entire year.

Still, they suffered nonetheless.

The forecast was garbage.

The results were, too.

And everyone loses.

We are fortunate that locally, we’ve got the Harrison Weather Center, run for many years

by Tony Mondaro.

Truth be told, we only trust his forecasts. He not only gets them right — it seems he’s the only one who seems to know how to get them right, time after time.

Meteorologists play a vital role in today’s world. They are often responsible for keeping us safe during epic rain or snowstorms.

But far too many times, they get it wrong. And there’s zero accountablitity. That’s a huge shame.

Businesses suffer.

People suffer.

It just isn’t right.

We highly recommend getting forecasts only from Mondaro.

He is the only person — within many miles — who truly gets it right. Almost always.

Editorial on school buses was unreasonable, driver says To the Editor: Having been a school bus driver for the Kearny school district for the past few years, I agree with the editor that the governor has done the right thing, requiring the three-point seatbelts on all school buses.

However, requiring school buses to have all seatbelts fastened before the engine could start is not exactly a wise idea, nor is it

LETTER TO THE EDITOR practical. For example, should the engine malfunction and shut off in traffic or worse, on a railroad crossing, if the driver were unable to restart the engine due to an unfastened seatbelt, the results could be disastrous.

Furthermore, I find it hard to believe that students are standing and congregating in the aisle and/ or bullying others. There are aides on the buses who watch the students to prevent such behaviors and ensure their safety.

I recommend the editor do some research on both sides of an issue before writing an article.

Fiction and all the genres falling under it are obvious choices because they step away from and alter reality. Nonfiction works since the subject of the book isn’t always about the reality that is currently going on around you.

Sometimes people don’t have anything to do, leaving them wandering around aimlessly. That’s called boredom, which has been a thorn in humankind’s side for as long as we can remember.

Reading is a way of quenching your desire to do something — it being healthy and beneficial is just an added bonus. It can help increase your vocabulary and reading speed, while also keeping you from doing dangerous things in fits of boredom.

There are many different choices meaning there is a little bit of something for everyone who decides to take up reading as a hobby.

No one knows everything, no matter how much it seems like they do. There is always more to learn, even after your education is long over. By reading, you can satisfy your yearning for knowledge, one without any testing or work required.

The more you read the larger

your vocabulary becomes, so it is an enjoyable way of expanding your word bank.

Another way it affects learning is that reading improves your memory by retaining the characters, setting, and plot to understand the book and continue reading. The memories you create forge and strengthen brain pathways, allowing you to have better memory recall.

Everything in life is connected to logic, whether lack thereof or something else.

Yet, logic isn’t the only thing that affects your daily life, emotions do too. Emotions aren’t the easiest to control, but reading can help spark emotions when you choose, which helps you get rid of those feelings healthily.

Which would you rather do? Scream at a scene from a book you’re reading or yelling at someone you care about because your anger got the best of you? The latter, correct?

Reading is an amazing hobby that can help you, whether you realize it or not.

Sure, it can be daunting, but it is worth it. If you want to read, maybe you just need to find out why.

After figuring that out, reading can be a lot easier for you to do. So, what are you waiting for?

Belleville girls’ soccer: Gaining momentum The Belleville High School girls’ soccer team posted a 13-5 record a year ago, which was the best record the program ever produced.

Veteran coach Beth Ann Garrett, the Lyndhurst native and soccer standout who once coached at Felician College, watched her fledgling program defeat Bloomfield in the Essex County Tournament and knock off Colonia in the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group III playoffs last season.

“It definitely was developing at the forefront of what we’re striving for,” Garrett said of last year’s success. “But we’re building a program here.

It’s not just a season. We want to use what we did last year as a building block. We worked hard and we were successful, but that’s just the start.

We had a strong nucleus of juniors and sophomores who got a lot of playing time last year.”

Garrett was also pleased to see a lot of her players participate with the BeElite travel program that went to the national tournament in Colorado over the summer.

“They’re a very coachable group of girls,” Garrett said. “They’re very receptive to listening and learning. They understand what I’m trying to do. We’re passing the ball, getting everyone involved. That’s the plan for the season as we try to win games. We want to have everyone contribute. If we do, then I think we can hang with some of the best teams in Essex County.”

The Buccaneers went undefeated in the Super Essex Conference-Colonial Division last year, so they have moved up to the Liberty Division this season.

Before the 2018 high school football season kicked off last week, local rivals Harrison and Lyndhurst were hopeful to have successful seasons, as long as the two teams received solid leadership from their respective quarterbacks.

Senior Brian Podolski was poised to lead the Golden Bears of Lyndhurst while junior Mateo DeSosa was returning as the starting signal caller for the Blue Tide of Harrison.

But neither program could have ever imagined what transpired in the first week of the season.

As it turned out, DeSosa and Podolski were the two top productive quarterbacks in the entire state.

DeSosa rushed for 221 yards on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns while completing 20-of-30 passes for 177 yards and two more touchdowns in the Blue Tide’s 30-28 victory over Bogota.

At the same time, Podolski completed 15-of-21 passes for 305 yards and five touchdowns in the Golden Bears’ thrilling 35-32 win over Hawthorne.

The two locals ranked No. 1 (DeSosa) and No. 2 (Podolski) in total offense in the entire state of New Jersey for the first week of the season.

the NJIC-Liberty Division and the two will face each other Oct. 5 in Lyndhurst.

Podolski was looking forward to the season opener, considering that it was against Hawthorne, a team that defeated the Golden Bears a year ago.

“Hawthorne is usually one of the biggest games of the season, so we knew we needed to win if we wanted to have a chance to make the playoffs,” Podolski said. “Coming into the game, I knew that our plan was to run the ball, but they packed the box against us, so I knew I could be throwing the entire game.”

on the same type of running and passing threat that former starter Mike O’Donnell was during the 2016 season, when O’Donnell, the 2016-2017 Observer Male Athlete of the Year, was leading the Blue Tide to the Central Jersey Group II state playoffs.

“Since my Pop Warner days, Mikey was always someone I looked up to,” DeSosa said. “He was always the big guy, making the big play. He was always so good with his running and passing. I hoped to be as good as him someday.”

“We knew we had to bounce back from such a tough year last year,” DeSosa said. “We wanted to have a good year and it starts from the first game. It was good to bounce back after having such a bad year last year.”

DeSosa knew that he had to take on a leadership role with the Blue Tide after the graduation of Dustin Huseinovic, the 2017-2018 Observer Male Athlete of the Year.

“After Dustin left, I knew I had to step it up,” DeSosa said.

“Dustin definitely showed me what it was like to be a leader and take control of the team.”

Neither local performer could believe their offensive explosions in Week One. “I knew that I had five touchdown passes, but I didn’t know my yardage,” Podolski said.

“It definitely gives me a lot of confidence going forward. I have a lot of good receivers that are hard to cover.”

Podolski has been aided by the addition of former Lyndhurst standout signal caller Danny Kesack, who has joined the coaching staff after graduating from Wesley College. But even Kesack, the disciple of former Giants great Phil Simms, never had a passing day in his high school career like the one Podolski enjoyed.

“Hopefully, a game like this helps to put Lyndhurst on the map,” said Podolski, who led the Golden Bears to a 31-6 victory over Secaucus last weekend to improve to 2-0 on the young season. “We’ve been doubted by a lot of people. I hope this goes to prove people we can play.”

Both quarterbacks, who met for a photo shoot last week, agreed that it was so incredible that the top two quarterback performances in the state came from rivals separated by only six miles.

“I think it’s really wild,” Podolski said. “We have a lot

Podolski hopes that the big game leads to some attention from college recruiters.

“I would love to play on the next level,” Podolski said. “I hope I get a lot more recognition from this.”

DeSosa is only a junior, so he has some time to get noticed.

“I think it’s all so amazing,” DeSosa said before his team fell to New Milford, 37-6, last Friday to fall to 1-1 on the young season. “I had a lot on my shoulders to start the season.

Senior Lindsey Riera is the top returning player on the forward line. Riera had 16 goals last year and contributed two assists in the win over Caldwell.

“She’s an exciting player who can put the ball in the back of the net,” Garrett said.

Senior Krystal Rasczyk also returns. She had eight goals and 15 assists last year and started the new season off with a goal.

“She’s one of the top assist leaders in the league,” Garrett said. “She keeps the ball moving.”

Senior Marianna de la Cruz and freshman Sophia Bojorquez are also solid contributors on the forward line.

“We definitely have a tough schedule,” Garrett said. “But I believe we’ll be competitive.”

Kearny remembers fallen star Velazquez with pre-game ceremony

A three-foot high poster of Adrian Velazquez now permanently adorns the wall outside the locker room at Harvey Field in Kearny and Kearny head boys’ soccer coach Bill Galka was trying to find the words necessary to talk of his standout player, who tragically was killed in a car accident last March.

“Adrian was loved by so many,” Galka said as emotion forced his voice to crack. “He had great personality, but there was a little devilish part of his personality. I miss his rosy cheeks.”

But Velazquez, who was only 19 at the time of his passing, will forever be remembered as a standout Kearny soccer player.

And Galka thought it would be a good way to honor Velazquez, placing the poster of Velazquez outside the locker rooms where the teams dress before playing home games.

The Kardinals opened their regular season Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Union City.

“We want this to be a place to remember Adrian, where he played so many times,” Galka said. “We are dedicating the season to him.”

So the Kardinals have AV-17 (Velazquez’s uniform number) on their uniform sleeves.

The “eye socket,” the bony cup surrounding the eye, contains the eye, the muscles that move it, tear glands, cranial nerves, blood vessels, ligaments, and other nerves. Not only can a strong blow to the eye fracture any (or all) of the seven bones that compose the eye socket, but an estimated 28 percent of people with eye socket fractures also have injuries that affect vision. Parents and coaches of children and teenagers, therefore, should stress the importance of wearing protective eyewear.

Without it, young athletes and active children are susceptible to eye-socket fractures and related eyelid swelling/drooping, bleeding in the white of the eye, double vision, blurred vision,

“A day like this makes me very proud,” Javier Velazquez said. “He was such a young man, but he was loved so much. He lived his whole life in Kearny and loved living

here. It means so much to us as a family to have this here. It also shows how much he was loved by everyone here. I wish we all weren’t here for a day like this. I’m not happy for the reason, but this shows how much he meant to everyone.”

And Velazquez will forever be remembered by everyone who visits Harvey Field in the future.

Since the early ‘90s, detained immigrants have been incarcerated at the Hudson County Jail in South Kearny. Now, however, following outcries from activists and leaders, the county wants out of its deal with Immigration and Customs Enforcement by the year 2020.

The announcement of this significant about-face in county policy comes after weeks of meetings by DeGise and his staff, members of the freeholder board, advocates for detainees and local, state and federal officials who could assist the county in making a successful transition.

“Just a month ago, I did not see a path that would allow us to move forward on a path to exit,” DeGise said.

“I’m pleased that after what I have heard from state and federal leaders, I believe we have a consensus on how Hudson County can exit the contract in a responsible manner.”

Throughout August and into September, the DeGise met with individual freeholders and advocates for detainees to look at what kinds of additional services might be provided

to detainees while in the facility.

Freeholders also reportedly met individually in-person and by phone with advocates, sharing their concerns and seeking common ground for a plan that would address the issues raised by board members when they voted to renew the contract with ICE in July.

Freeholder Board Chairman Anthony Vainieri, who attended all of the discussions with county staff and the advocates, welcomed the “Path to Exit” plan.

executive, my fellow freeholders, state and federal leaders and local advocates for detainees have worked constructively to make this exit plan possible, and I am proud of the work that has been done to arrive at this point,” Vainieri said. “I will urge my colleagues to support this plan because it represents a humane, reasonable approach.”

One of the most prominent elected officials critical of the county’s contract with ICE, Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla, welcomed DeGise’s announcement.

“With this action, the county executive and the freeholders have begun the work of dealing with this issue in keeping with our values while dealing with the difficult realities of governing at the local level, and I applaud that,” Bhalla said.

A copy of the resolution will be placed on the board’s meeting agenda and is now available tomorrow for public review. Other elements of the plan requiring a vote will go before the board as needed.

What is known as “Nana’s Lake House,” provided a picturesque summer getaway for Rosemary and her family dating back to her youth.

Victim thinks he won lottery, sends $750 in gift cards to claim $2M NUTLEY — A township resident was thought he’d won a $2 million jackpot via Twitter was in for a rude awakening after he learned he not only didn’t win anything, but he was also scammed out of $750 in Amazon gift cards, the Nutley Police Department said last week.

Dispatch directed units to take a report regarding a fraud where a victim said he was recently scammed out of $750 in Amazon gift cards. The suspect, called “Mr. Luke Bryan,” via Twitter, told the victim he’d won a contest for $2 million and to receive the money, he would have to provide $750 in Amazon gift cards to a third party called “Peter Brandan.”

The victim purchased the cards as directed, scratched off the barcodes and sent pictures of the numbers via text to “Mr. Brandan.” Officers assisted the victim in setting up an Amazon account and tried to redeem the gift cards unsuccessfully.

Amazon was contacted and said the cards were applied to an account but had not yet been used. The victim was advised to email the escalation department and explain the situation and there was a chance the funds would be transferred to the victim’s account.

The email was sent and the victim was advised to follow up with Amazon via email and/or phone. Additionally, it was suggested that the victim monitor their financial accounts for any suspicious activity.

Meanwhile, the NPD also released the following reports of recent incidents: Passed out & drunk in a crashed car A motor vehicle investigation on Vincent Place led to an arrest of a drunken driver, the Nutley Police Department said.

Patrol officers were flagged down by a passerby who believed there was a crash on Vincent Place opposite the Township well. Officers responded and found a black vehicle had struck a parked vehicle on the east side of the street, opposite the well. A white woman was passed out in the driver’s seat with the engine running, and the car still in drive.

Because of her condition, it was necessary for units to break the passenger-side window of the car to get her out. The emergency squad was notified and arrived to transport her to hospital. The driver, Monzerrate Marrano, 29, of Nutley, was eventually placed under arrest and transported to HQ without incident. She was charged

with possession of CDS, issue tickets alleging drunken driving along with several other infractions. Marrano was released on her own recognizance with a mandatory court date.

Florida woman nabbed on outstanding warrant A motor vehicle stop was initiated by officers on Kingsland Avenue that resulted in the arrest of driver Jennifer Sheets, 30, of Maryester, Florida, on an outstanding warrant out of Passaic. Sheets was transported to headquarters without incident, the Passaic Police Department was advised of her arrest and they responded to take her into their custody. She was also issued two traffic summonses for unclear plates and being an unlicensed driver — which were mailed by the Court.

A victim told police he recently signed up to be a “secret shopper” and gave a name, phone number and address. No other personal information was given. He received a package containing instructions to cash a $998 money order and then to buy iTunes gift cards at Walmart and send pictures of the PIN numbers. The victim did not cash the money order or buy the gift cards and determined this was a fraud attempt.

Fraudsters tell caller they’ll ‘shoot your son’ Officers responded to a report of a suspicious phone call. Upon arrival, they met with a victim who was visibly shaken and upset. They said they’d received a call on a cell phone where the caller claimed they had their son and they were going to shoot him unless they were paid $3,000.

The victim said the callers were arguing with them and they had heard a girl screaming in the background and thought it was their daughter. The victim returned home and found both children were safely at home. The victim was advised that this was a scam and that callers will often look to get people worked up and try to get money from them.

The two numbers they received calls from were from Puerto Rico and Falls Church, Virginia. Police reached a Spanish-speaking man at one number and no one at the other. The victim was advised to contact police if they needed any further assistance, and were advised the incident would be documented.
