Kearny Square Mall sale price way over expectations at $45.5 million

ost people go to a mall to shop.

And shop like mad, one particular buyer did, indeed. This patron bought the entire mall and suddenly, the price of real

estate on Kearny’s west side is beginning to zoom upward.

Specifically, it’s the 139,000-square-foot Kearny Square mall, anchored by BJ’s, with a number of smaller retailers as additional tenants, that has sold for $45.5 million — well above its current-

assessed value of about $8.4 million and market value of more than $29 million.

The property transaction was logged June 12 by the Hudson County Register’s Office, but the information didn’t become available to Kearny

A NEW KIND OF ADDICTION:

OR AS LONG AS we’ve been discussing addictions — and the stigmas that go along with them — there’s one kind of addiction we’ve not yet broached … and it’s one of the newest kinds of addictions … to electronics and social media.

ADDICTION CRISIS For yours truly, from perhaps 2009 to sometime in 2017, my addiction was Facebook. The first thing I’d do — after having the first cuppa, of course — would be to go online to Facebook to see

what I missed from 11 p.m. the night prior to 5 a.m., the time I woke up.

When I would take a photo — whether it was of my nieces or nephews, or anything else — I would have to post it to Facebook for the world to see.

But then it started to hit me — my “addiction” to social media was overtaking my life. I would constantly ask people if they saw what I

posted. Others would ask me the same. But it got worse.

I was losing friends over discussions over politics or other news of the day. I had to stop. And aside from my workrelated social media, I’ve made a conscientious effort to stay away from Facebook — and Twitter — and most other social media.

An 8-year “addiction” was over. And frankly, being 95% devoid of personal social media has been relieving. It had its purpose, and still does.

But it consumed me. Way too much.

There are countless people out there who are addicted to social media, gaming, electronic pornography and so much more. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to speak with several local folks who find themselves addicted to electronics. Their “addictions” range from playing games in 12-hour clips at a time, to posting nearly everything they do to social media and more. They’ve agreed to share their stories with us.

‘Everything I do, I tend to share it on Facebook.’

Here is the story of a local man, who lives in Kearny, but who asked we not use his proper name. Meet Jack, a 46-year-old married father of three sons and two daughters.

He and his wife and five kids live in a modest one-family home in the northeastern end of town.

Jack says he first started using Facebook in 2008, when the social-media site began its expansion from being mostly for college- and high schoolaged users to a place for adults, too. At first, he would post a photo or two from family outings.

Then, as the network grew, he grew with it. He would post his location as often as he’d go to different places. It’s grown, he says, to the point that he practically posts everything he does — from work-related happenings, to videos he takes on a Jersey Shore boardwalk, to just about anything one could think of.

“I really liked it (Facebook) from the get-go,” Jack said.

“But it grew and grew and grew, and now, whether it’s a visit to South Jersey to

Jack says his persistent use of the social-media site has led to family quarrels, arguments with people he once considered friends, to people reporting his moves to online administrators — and it’s led to his taking involuntary time away from Facebook.

“In 2016, during the presidential campaign, I lost so many friends,” Jack said. “I got baited into discussions I should not have been a part of.

I couldn’t control what I said about other people’s opinions. Several times, because of my comments, my account got suspended for 48- or 72-hour clips at a time. When I had no access to my account, I was lost. I hated not being able to post things. It was like the most important part of my life was taken away from me.”

Jack says he’s piped it down a little — but from sunrise to sunset, he’s practically “attached to his mobile phone,” checking what others are saying on Facebook and now, Twitter, “multiple times an hour.”

“I can’t function without it,” he said. “I know the damage it has caused. But I still do it. Is it out of hand?

Yes. But I can’t stop doing what I do.”

Jack is hardly alone.

Next, let’s meet Anne.

‘My words may hurt, but I still use them’

Anne says she’s gotten herself into trouble over the years, posting replies to people’s comments on discussion groups, people’s Facebook walls and the like.

“My boss saw some comments I made about a co-worker,” she admitted.

“I was given one warning, and was told ‘either stop, or get your resume ready for a new job — because that’s the next step.’”

To get around this, Anne says she made her comments and posts invisible to her boss.

Though she and her boss remain “friends” on Facebook, she says he isn’t aware that she still does what she does. She understood the gravity of what the boss told her about being openly critical of her co-workers, but she wasn’t ready to give it all up to save her job. Instead she took the easy route — making her remarks highly secretive.

“Do I worry he will see them somehow, via a third party? Sometimes,” Anne said. “But I have the right to my opinion — and trust me, no one is going to take away my rights just so I can have a good job. My words may hurt, but I still use them.”

Anne says she hopes to be able to curtail her online activity, but she’s concerned it might ultimately cost her in the long run.

An expert’s view

In a video posted to the university’s website, yale. edu, Potenza says those with addictions to Internet-based things are also 10% more likely to have addictions to substances such as alcohol.

Social-media addiction is also likely to interfere with work, relationships and more.

He also says there’s limited data on the “efficacy of medication” for treating such addictions. But there are still ways electronic addicts can help themselves.

“One should be mindful of the ways one uses the Internet,” he said in the video. “If one thinks they

– even though your case may not come to trial until after Sept. 4.

In a July 24 directive to all county and municipal prosecutors and liaisons to same, N.J. Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal advised, “I ask that all municipal prosecutors in New Jersey seek an adjournment until Sept. 4, 2018, or later, of any matter involving a marijuana-related offense pending in municipal court.

“This adjournment will give my office sufficient time to develop appropriate guidance for prosecutors….”

Grewal made clear in his letter that he was acting in response to an effort by Jersey City to implement a marijuana decriminalization policy – without the imprimatur of a change in state law to allow that to happen.

The state’s top lawman characterized the city’s action as “an improper exercise of a municipal prosecutor’s authority” and ordered it voided.

In the meantime, Grewal said he was forming a task force of “criminal justice stakeholders – including the Hudson County Prosecutor and the Chief Municipal Prosecutor of Jersey City – to study the issue and advise me on possible solutions.

“By the end of August, I intend to issue a statewide directive concerning the scope and appropriate use of prosecutorial discretion in marijuana-related offenses in municipal court.”

At the same time, state lawmakers are exploring avenues for legalizing adult use of marijuana. One such proposal advanced by Sen. Nick Scutari (D-Union) is making its way through the state Senate.

So far, nine states and the District of Columbia have passed such laws.

In the meantime, Kearny Police Chief George King said, “Our enforcement is going to continue as the law dictates unless we get something contravening that from the county prosecutor or the AG.” As per the AG’s directive, the municipal prosecutor

will be asking the municipal court judge to defer hearing cases involving simple pot possession until at least Sept. 4 or until further clarification comes from the AG. “Remember, this has nothing to do with cases involving possession and/ or distribution of marijuana exceeding 50 grams which are referred to the county for prosecution,” King said.

Commenting on Jersey City’s bid to legalize pot, Peter Servidio, who serves as municipal prosecutor for Nutley and Bloomfield, said: “It’s important to have uniformity in the law.” By promoting his city’s action, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop “is forgetting about separation of powers – you can’t have one branch of government supercede another without creating a disparity in enforcement.”

How many simple pot cases are currently pending in Kearny Municipal Court couldn’t be readily learned but King said that during the past six months, the KPD has averaged 21 marijuanarelated arrests per month.

Michael Cifelli, who splits his time as municipal prosecutor between two West Hudson communities, guesstimated that the Harrison municipal court has “maybe a half-dozen to a dozen” marijuana-related cases pending while in East Newark, “maybe two or three.”

Unless drug-related cases are uncontested by defendants, there is a time delay built in to the process before a judge can hear them, King said, because the suspected marijuana (or cocaine, heroin, etc.) confiscated by police must be sent to a state lab for testing.

Typically, the chief said, it can take “three to four weeks” for the lab to return the evidence prior to a court date. “For blood and urine samples or DNA, it takes longer,” he said.

In Nutley, it takes “five weeks on the average” to get back lab results, Servidio estimated, but in bigger

Asked his opinion, Kearny’s Chief King sounded skeptical, saying, “A lot of simple possession cases can lead to bigger things.” He mentioned one case where the KPD made a motor vehicle stop and found a small amount of marijuana in the car. “We used that arrest as a reason to hold the car and after getting a search warrant, in the trunk we found cocaine and a weapon that was later tied to a murder,” he recalled.

Then, he said, there’s the matter of police canines trained to sniff out drugs.

“Well, if we can’t arrest people for marijuana, do you retrain the dogs?” Plus, there’s the state-wide mandate for testing local cops for traces of marijuana in their system, King said. How is that to be handled, he wondered.

Overall, King said, “with the opioid crisis we’re dealing with, [legalizing marijuana] just seems counter-intuitive.”

Have you ever left a kid in a hot car?

By Kevin Canessa s someone who spent four full years in the oppressive heat of South Florida, it should come as no surprise that yours truly is a bit tired of the heat of the last few weeks. In fact, Sept. 22, the first day of autumn, can’t get here quick enough for me.

But it was the heat of the last few weeks — and an email we got in this office last week — about a survey regarding parents who leave their kids in parked cars that really got to me.

The survey’s results are extremely alarming, so much so that I’d like the share them with you.

The survey, taken by Kars4Kids. org — you know the jingle and probably can’t get it out of your head now … sorry — revealed: • Only 16% of parents surveyed — 2,500 participated — say they are concerned they could ever “forget” their kid in a hot car.

• A whopping 78% who were asked think negatively of a parent who, even by accident, leaves a kid in a car. This, of course, means 22% don’t think poorly of such parents.

• Nearly 11.5% think it’s OK to leave a child in a car for a few minutes.

• Perhaps the most stunning part of the survey — 69.9% of those surveyed said they would never, ever, even remotely, forget they’ve left a child in a car. (Sadly, it’s happened before, parents have been imprisoned and children have died from such errors.)

• Only 15% say they’ve taken precautions to ensure they don’t leave their kids in a car.

• Just 4.7% admitted to forgetting a

to them. Yet it does continue to happen — every year when the temps are warm. Perhaps the time has come for more parents to think twice about leaving their kids in a warm vehicle.

A few things really stick out here.

That 11.5% of those surveyed believe it’s acceptable to leave a child in a car for a few minutes is mind-numbing. Think of last week. Try to recall even one day where you got into a car after it sat in the heat for hours on end. Do you remember how hot it was? Now, think of a child being left in a car with that kind of heat — even for 5 or 10 minutes.

Could you even begin to imagine what such heat would do to a child? I recall sitting in a car for about 20 seconds last week before it was turned on — and before the A/C started up — and I was sweating profusely … and yet there are some out there who think it’s OK to keep a child in a car for a few minutes?

Maybe we live in different worlds.

The bottom line is it appears many people out there think it can’t happen

Please use care dropping off, picking up kids at school To the Editor: Over the past few years, the Kearny Police Department has received complaints regarding illegal parking and dropping off or picking up passengers without pulling to the curb.

Please keep in mind the safety of school children is paramount.

The KPD asks that all parents and guardians obey traffic laws in and around the vicinity of all schools and throughout the Town of Kearny. We have also observed, in the past, many “jaywalking” violations by parents and/or guardians with children in tow.

There will be officers assigned

Violators will be summonsed.

The following traffic violations, in particular, but not limited to, will be strictly enforced by officers on foot, bicycle and radio car: double parking, parked in prohibited areas, blocking crosswalks, blocking school bus stops dropping off, picking up children in the middle of the street

and speeding.

We also ask parents and or guardians to reinforce with their children the use of intersections controlled with a crossing guard.

We believe that by obeying the traffic laws and teaching children about the traffic laws, we will enjoy a safe school year.

At Athenian Fresh Grill, it’s legacy, fine ingredients and a great dining experience

asso Apostolopoulos was destined to own his own eatery.

As a kid — and throughout his formative years, all the way through college — he spent hours upon hours in his father’s diner in Livingston. He also spent two decades as a food distributor. So you might say food is in his blood.

Fast forward to today.

Apostolopoulos wanted a place of his own, and when the Athenian Grill — now known as the Athenian Fresh Grill — in North Arlington went on the market, he seized the moment by purchasing the business with his brother.

What was once a nice, casual place for Greek food has turned into the area’s first Mediterranean fastcasual restaurant — and Apostolopoulos hopes it’s the first of many of its kind.

“I spent years with my dad — even through college — nights, weekends, at the diner,” Apostolopoulos said.

“Dad suggested I get out to get hands-on experience at franchises, to see how they operate. And I’d come back telling him, ‘They have their own cleaning schedule, they have special drains, they have managers who are onsite all the time.’ So I got a wealth of experience doing this.”

And the vision now?

Perfect the North Arlington location — and eventually, create a franchise following a model similar to what one might see at Chipotle.

Apostolopoulos is clearly well on his way.

New bridge likely to open in 2022

Right now, the main thrust of the job seems to be the new roadway accesses taking shape — the ones that will lead to and from the new span once they are properly aligned.

We asked the state Department of Transportation (DOT) — which is in charge of the $480 million federallyfunded Wittpenn Bridge replacement project — for an update on how things were going.

In particular, we asked DOT spokesman Daniel Triana if the materials spotted on the barge were, in fact, the new decking, how long they’d been there and how much rent was being paid the barge owner.

His reply: “Yes, three sections and two end beams of the lift span are on the barge. They arrived in July 2017. We do not have a cost estimate on the barge, as it is a contractor expense.”

In a July 30 email, Triana provided an update on the project, explaining why the two ends of the new bridge still remain unconnected — a year after the decking materials were floated to the site.

Elements of what the DOT refers to as “Contract 3” — the “lift span towers, lift span counterweight, elevator and all mechanical and electrical systems” — are currently under construction, Triana said.

“Although there were delays due to a harsh winter and some constructability material issues that the contractor is currently addressing, this is not expected to delay the overall project,” he said.

“The final installation of the towers and lift span on the bridge are ongoing and expected to be installed and completed this fall,” he said, while the remaining work listed under Contract 3 figures to be done by “late 2018.”

Already completed, Triana said, is Contract 1, “which consisted of the construction of the river pier and fender system … completed in December 2014,” and Contract 2, “which consisted of constructing sections of the bridge approximately 200 feet north of the existing alignment … completed in January 2016.”

Contract 3A — “much of the utility work, pump station and water basin, and the reconstruction of a portion of Fish House Road” — is “on schedule” and figures to be done by this fall,” Triana said.

And, finally, Contract 4 — the “final roadway approaches, improvements to the Fish House Road interchange, new ramps to Newark Avenue and St. Paul’s Avenue and the demolition of the existing bridge” is also “on schedule, with sections contingent on the completion of Contract 3.”

Work on Contract 4 is slated for completion by fall 2022, he said.

Current ongoing activity, he said, includes demolition of the old Fish House Road bridge over Route 7 and relocation of gas and water mains and PSE&G and Verizon conduits in Kearny and Jersey City.

“Steel work on the new ramp deck from Routes 1&9 to Route 7 west is expected to begin soon, as well as construction of piles and piers on the west abutment of the bridge in Kearny,” Triana said.

Sometime this month, he said, motorists should anticipate westbound traffic to be shifted south onto a new temporary road to allow for the continuation of utility and roadway improvements.

And a Fish House Road pump station should be finished this fall — but ongoing improvements to Fish House Road will likely continue through fall 2022, he said.

Elderly man struck, injured by car in Lyndhurst: LPD An 86-year-old man was struck by a car on Riverside Avenue Wednesday, Aug. 8, Det. Vincent Auteri, of the Lyndhurst Police Department said.

Auteri offered the following description of what led to the incident: At approximately 7:30 a.m. that morning, an 86-year-old Lyndhurst resident was at-

tempting to cross Riverside westbound at the intersection of Kingsland Avenue.

The driver of the vehicle, a 72-year-old Nutley man, was attempting to make a left turn onto the northbound lane on Riverside from Kingsland when he struck the victim.

Several witnesses reported seeing the victim in a crosswalk.

The victim sustained severe head trauma and was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, Hackensack. As of that evening, the victim was in the intensive-care unit.

The driver, who was not injured, reported sun glare as contributing to the mishap. No summonses or charges are expected.

A real estate services firm, Cushman & Wakefield, announced the property’s change of hands earlier this summer and identified the buyer as Benthall Kennedy, a Sun Life Investment Management Co., although the deed recording the sale listed the new owner as MEPT Passaic Ave. LLC of Bethesda, Maryland.

What’s the connection?

As explained by the firm’s website, MEPT (MultiEmployer Property Trust) and affiliates are “core, open-

end private equity real estate funds [with] $9.5 billion in gross assets” and Benthall Kennedy, headquartered in Seattle, “serves as the real estate investment advisor and investor relations provider to the Fund.”

MEPT, founded in 1982, controls “a diversified portfolio of institutionalquality real estate assets” of more than 100 investments covering 25 “major U.S. metropolitan markets.”

Among its more recent acquisitions is Kedron Village II, a 157,185 square foot retail center in Peachtree City, Georgia, 30 miles southwest of Atlanta, which was purchased for $30.9 million. In 2011, MEPT acquired Kedron Village I, a

93,356 square foot, groceryanchored retail center.

MEPT’s portfolio also includes investments in office buildings, warehouses, flex/research and development facilities and apartments, its website says.

Representatives of Cushman & Wakefield, the Chicago-based real estate services firm that brokered the Kearny Square transaction, have said that many “regional and national institutional and private buyers” participated in bidding for the property.

The fact that the mall has retail tenants offering wares and services not typically available through online purchase and Passaic Avenue has attracted the

development of hundreds of new residential apartments whose future occupants are seen as likely mall patrons, strengthened the attractiveness of the site for a buyer, C&W representatives said.

The recent disclosure of the Kearny Square property transaction has prompted Peneda to take another look at his calculations for the land and improvements at the 10.27-acre site, particularly in light of the former property owner — DVL Holdings LLC — having filed a tax appeal now pending in State Tax Court.

Kearny collected $897,496 in taxes for the property in 2017; however, based on a lower tax rate struck for this year, the town projects it will pocket $885,423 for 2018.

But now, based on the recent sale, Peneda said he was contemplating “looking at possibly doing an added assessment [in October] or a counter-appeal.”

The BJ’s mall case is among 15 or so other commercial appeals awaiting action by the State Tax Court — unless the owners and town can work out settlements.

Heading the list is Kearny vs. PSE&G, whose 32 lots the town has currently assessed at roughly $28.9 million, with a market value of about $76.7 million. The town, which contends the state has been holding back the full amount of energy tax receipts it is owed, has engaged expert appraisers to review each property to come up with new estimates. Currently, the town gets about $18.4 million annually in energy tax revenues.

Other businesses challenging their assessments include Kuehne Chemical, Walmart and Straus Communications, which owns a radio transmission facility in the meadows on the north side of the Belleville Pike that sends signals for WMCA and WNYC. The signals travel up and down the entirety of the east coast, especially at nighttime.

The oval-shaped property is listed on town tax records as 36.49 acres, mostly underwater, with an assessment of $540,300 (market value of $1.9 million) and generating yearly taxes of $57,839.

Lyndhurst’s McCarthy keeps father’s recruiting tradition alive For more than 20 years, the McCarthy Report, put out by North Arlington resident Dennis McCarthy, was the premier scouting service for high school football in the state of New Jersey.

The McCarthy Report was touting high school football players for colleges long before the advent of the Internet, long before scouting services popped up online all over the place.

If a college recruiter wanted to know the details about any top-flight high school player in the state, then they got their hands on the McCarthy Report. It was thorough, complete with heights, weights, 40-yard dash times, weight lifting prowess – even providing a little report about the player’s individual skill level. It was a must-see

for college coaches.

But in May of 2017, Dennis McCarthy passed away, leaving a huge void in high school football in New Jersey. McCarthy was one of the most respected men involved in high school and college football. His service, his knowledge of the game, was downright legendary.

Over the years, Dennis’ son, David, assisted his father in a huge way in putting out the McCarthy Report. The two would pour over tons of videotape and DVDs to determine the best college prospects in the state.

“I always loved the recruiting side of football,” said the 50-yearold McCarthy, who has decided to continue compiling the McCarthy

It’s been a little more than three months since Stephen Andrews took over the football head coaching reins at his alma mater Kearny High School and the energetic 34-year-old Andrews is definitely getting more and more comfortable with every passing day.

“At this time, we’ve spent so much time together with my strength and conditioning program that we’re familiar with each other,” said Andrews, who was a standout football and track star at Kearny before moving on to The College of New Jersey.

“I’ve taken total ownership of the program. It’s my team now. And the kids have so totally bought into that idea.

They’re bringing a positive work ethic and attitude every day.”

Andrews, who becomes Kearny’s seventh head coach since the school was forced to discontinue football as a varsity sport in 2003, tries to do what has been virtually impossible since that dreadful disaster 15 years ago – namely try to turn the Kardinals into winners.

Kearny remains one of the very few New Jersey high schools to have never participated in the NJSIAA state playoffs. The Kardinals have not enjoyed a winning season since 1999. The highest win

total during that stretch of time has been four wins twice – 2005 under Rich Howell and 2014 under Nick Edwards.

But Andrews, who replaces John Kryzanowski after three seasons, believes he’s the right man to bring the Kardinals out of the doldrums.

“They all wanted something to believe in,” said Andrews, who takes over after the Kardinals suffered through two straight 1-9 campaigns. “I’ve been trying to drill winning into their minds. If they put the hard work in, they can be successful.”

In fact, Andrews reached into the old football archives and found a quote from the legendary coach from Notre Dame folk lore.

Leahy’s quote was “People who want to win stand a very good chance of doing just that.” Andrews has placed that quote from Leahy in the Kardinals’ locker room and into the deep corners of their brains. It’s hard to believe that a young rookie head coach could use a quote from someone who has been deceased since 1973 and who last served as a head coach 20 years prior to that, but Andrews is a big Notre Dame fan and believes in Leahy’s philosophy.

“It’s a great quote,” Andrews said. “Playing football is not something that you do just to have something to do.

Andrews said that he has been getting a positive vibe from his team.

“These kids believe that success comes from hard work,” Andrews said. “I’ve been trying to instill that into them.”

Andrews said that he worked as a personal trainer with athletes from successful state championship programs such as Don Bosco Prep and Bergen Catholic.

“Those kids put in the work and it lead to success on the field,” Andrews said. “I have been teaching that hard work leads to success.”

Before the Kardinals hit the practice field for the first time last week – on the beautifully renovated Kearny High facility, complete with a perfect FieldTurf surface – Andrews had his team working hard in the weight room and doing diligence with running and training.

“When I started with this team, we had only one

kid who could squat 225 (pounds),” Andrews said.

“Now we have five. The main thing with training kids is that they want to see their improvement. That helps their confidence level. If they see the results of their hard work in the weight room, then that will also help them on the field. I wanted to max out their physical potential. I think I’ve done that.”

The Kardinals will utilize a spread offense and the success of that offense will fall on the shoulders of talented senior Travis Witt (5-11, 180), who has been the starter for the last two seasons and saw a lot of action as a freshman in 2015.

“He’s a natural leader,” Andrews said of Witt, who is also a standout wrestler and baseball player. “He just has that natural ability to lead.

The other kids seem to just fall into line behind him. He’s been pushing himself really hard.”

Andrews said that Witt has been putting in the time in physical training with Andrews.

Witt is not the lone quarterback in the Kardinals’ camp.

Junior Chris Leimberg (6-2, 195) has all the tools to be a good signal caller.

“He has a lot of ability,” Andrews said of Leimberg.

“He is a physical specimen.”

The main running back is junior Kyle Ostanski (5-8, 180), who saw significant playing time last season.

“I think he’s a lot like Christian McCaffrey,” Andrews said of Ostanski, comparing him to the multitalented Carolina Panthers’ running back, who is equally deft in catching passes as he is running with the ball.

“He’s a tough hardnosed running back with good technical ability. He’s put in a lot of work to get better.”

Junior Phil Biet (5-11, 195) is another Kardinal running back.

The Kards have a lot of people at the wide receiver position, led by senior Cristovao Miranda (6-1, 175), who has spent a lot of time working with the track and field team.

“He’s our smartest player,” Andrews said of Miranda.

“He’s Ivy League material.

He’s also very fast.”

Omar Martinez (5-10, 220), Kyle Solinski (5-10, 175) and Scott Miceli (5-11, 215) are in the mix of pass catchers, along with promising freshman Haven Ortiz (5-11, 180).

The offensive line features junior twin brothers Andrew Mauricio (5-10, 230) and Matthew Mauricio (5-10, 210). Andrew is a tackle, while Matthew is the starting center. Both enjoyed excellent wrestling seasons last winter.

Senior Brandon Castillo (511, 230) is a three-year starter at guard. Junior Brandon Loo (5-10, 210) has also benefitted tremendously from the offseason weight training and conditioning. Sophomores Gabe Santos (5-10, 210) and Devin Narvaez (6-1, 210) will get time at tackle. The linebacker corps features the team’s best athletes with Miceli and Witt at

outside linebacker and Omar Martinez and Biet at inside linebacker. Andrew Mauricio gets into the mix at inside backer.

Miceli and Witt have the ability to drop back and act as defensive backs if needed.

“Travis could technically be a middle linebacker, but he’s very good at linebacker,” Andrews said. “They are both like the perfect hybrids (linebacker/defensive back).”

Ostanski and Solinski are the cornerbacks with Esteban Martinez serving as the safety.

The Kardinals open their season on Thursday, Aug. 30 against Millburn at home at 7 p.m. The new coach gets to make his debut at home on the shiny new turf.

“I’m excited because the kids have worked so hard,” Andrews said. “I know how much time they’ve put into it and buying into the system. I want success for them, because I know how much they want it. I’m getting to see what the hard work can do for Kearny football. I’m beyond excited.”

After the last few years, the Kardinals needed the shot in the arm that a young, vibrant, energetic Andrews can provide.

There was never a hesitation about ending the McCarthy Report with Dennis’ passing.

“Last year was bittersweet without him,” David McCarthy said. “But I definitely wanted to keep it going. I love doing this.”

So McCarthy keeps watching videos and DVDs to all hours of the night, with the help of his childhood friend and fellow Lyndhurst resident Michael Voza, as well as former Hackensack High gridiron greats Joe Dawkins and Cedric Brown.

“They all have a good eye for talent,” McCarthy said.

“We watch a lot of tape together and went to a lot of games together. I’d say I went to about 35 games last year, but we do a lot online.”

Still, there’s a sense of sadness that the elder McCarthy is gone.

“I miss talking about good prospects with my Dad,” David McCarthy said. “The banter I had with him, even when we disagreed on a player. I miss that more than anything.”

McCarthy does get assistance as well from his brother, Ryan.

“It’s definitely gotten easier over the years,” McCarthy said, thanks to the advent of the video service Hudl, which puts full games on the web. “The Internet saves us a lot of time.”

So as the start of the high school football season rapidly approaches in two weeks, McCarthy was asked to judge the talent level in New Jersey for the Class of 2019.

“I think it’s a tremendous class with a lot of talent,”

“Well, size is a big thing,” McCarthy said. “But the first thing I look at is explosiveness and speed. I think that’s what separates the top players from the rest. I pride myself on being able to pick up on that aspect.”

All in all, McCarthy likes the talent level in New Jersey. It’s probably the main reason why the McCarthy Report is still going strong after all these years.

“I still spend many nights in front of my computer, going over tapes,” McCarthy said. “Especially when I need to get the Report out.

I spend a lot of time on the phone with coaches, texting a lot, communicating. Without a doubt, I pride myself on finding the sleeper kids.

Everyone can spot the big name kids from the big powerhouse schools. I like finding the ones that no one knows about.”

With that, McCarthy went back to the grind, with another coach to call and more information to compile.

Somewhere, the old man is very proud.

Blue Tide begins new era with alum Hicks at helm

Danny Hicks literally grew up across the street from the new Harrison High School in the Harrison Gardens housing project.

And as a youngster, Hicks had one dream – to become the head football coach at Harrison. He attended the school and played football there, hoping to get the chance someday to be a coach at his alma mater.

Now, at the tender age of 26, Hicks is getting that opportunity. He’s the new head coach of the Blue Tide, bringing an air of energy and excitement never before seen.

“The kids have fully bought into our message,” Hicks said.

“It’s great that I came from here. They understand that about me. I clicked with them.

It wasn’t too long ago that I was one of them.”

Hicks doesn’t think there will be an issue by playing fast and furious football.

“I think they’ve had so much of it now that they all love getting the hand signals and going,” Hicks said. “It’s not difficult.”

“He’s really stepped it up and gotten on board with what we’re doing,” Hicks said of DeSosa. “We needed him to be a certain presence with this team. We named him a captain in the spring and put him in a position to lead the team, to learn and grow with the new offense.”

The Blue Tide will go from a triple option team last year to a spread set this year.

“He’s really been a breath of fresh air to our team,” Hicks said of DeSosa. “We give him a lot of leeway to make decisions on the fly. He’s not afraid to make plays and he’s mature enough to handle everything. He’s a very coachable kid and he’s much more comfortable with this scheme.”

The top running back is senior Landor Vallejo (5-8, 205).

“Landor is one of the strongest kids we have,” Hicks said.

“He’s a hard runner. He’s a very seasoned back.”

The Tide will use junior Javian Olsen (5-8, 160) in the backfield as well.

“Our running backs are like thunder and lightning,” Hicks said. “They give us a burst of energy.”

Juniors Erik Feliz (6-1, 180), Anthony Zamora (5-8, 170) and Daniel Rueda (6-0, 175), along with sophomores Chris Mendez (5-7, 160) and Sergio Flores (5-5, 150) round out the receiving corps.

“We want to be able to have fresh legs on the field at all times,” Hicks said. “So we’re going to be shuttling kids in and out. We really don’t have a set of ones (starters). The others are just as good.”

The offensive line features returning senior Paul Mobus (6-0, 190) at tackle.

“Mobus is the hardest working kid in the program,” Hicks said.

Senior Jonathan Salazar (6-0, 210) is another tackle.

Senior Elvin Pina (6-0, 230) is at one guard, with his little brother freshman Edward Pina (5-9, 240) at center. Junior Omar Veliz (5-8, 220) is the other guard.

The Blue Tide will line up with a 4-4 defensive front.

Mobus and senior Christian Montilla (6-0, 230) are the starting defensive ends, with big junior J.J. Ramos (6-4, 300) and junior Luiz Santos (6-0, 240) at defensive tackles.

The linebacker corps features sophomore Anthony Mascellino (5-10, 180), who started last year, along with Vallejo, Chico and Oeckel. Chico was a defensive back last year, while Oeckel was a defensive end.

The defensive backs are Rueda and Zamora with Feliz at safety.

Kitchen fire in Lyndhurst quickly knocked down A kitchen fire on the 700 block of Kingsland Avenue that resulted from unattended cooking was quickly extinguished by the Lyndhurst Fire Department last week, Det. Vincent Auteri, of the Lyndhurst Police Department said.

The fire reportedly broke out at around 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 8. When police

officers arrived on the scene, they reported seeing thick black coming from a secondfloor window.

It took only a few minutes, following their arrival, for the LFD to extinguish the fire.

The Rutherford and North Arlington fire departments assisted on the scene.

No injuries were reported.

Students at new med school get white coats Sixty students in the first class at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine launched their medical careers with a White Coat ceremony at the school, which was created to address a looming physician shortage and to transform medical education to meet new challenges in health care delivery.

“We welcome this exceptional class of students to the physician community by giving them a white coat, an enduring symbol of compassion and honor,’’ said Robert C. Garrett, co-CEO of Hackensack Meridian Health.

Garrett said that more than 2,100 students applied for the 60 open med school slots. The class includes two practicing RNs, five graduate students, as well as a future physician with a Ph.D. in pharmacology.

Half the students are from New Jersey and nearly half are women.

The innovative curriculum offers a three-

year program so students may start their residencies a year early or stay on and obtain a graduate degree.

Only a dozen or so medical schools offer a three-year program, which lowers the cost of tuition.

The curriculum is based on an approach that focuses equally on maintaining health and curing illness.

“We have created a rigorous academic curriculum that combines traditional science with a focus on the new frontiers in medicine — prevention, population health, genetics and team-based care delivered in the community setting,’’ said Mary Meehan, interim president of Seton Hall University.

Along with the opening of the School of Medicine, Seton Hall University has relocated its College of Nursing and School of Health and Medical Sciences to create an interprofessional Health Sciences (IHS) campus in Nutley and Clifton, Meehan said.

“As we have come to recognize the importance of social factors on health outcomes, we better understand that health and wellness occurs in the community, not in the hospital,’’ said Bonita Stanton, founding dean of the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University. “We are teaching our students the power and importance of community in improving the arc of a population’s health.’’

Additionally, the Hackensack Meridian Health Board of Trustees has established a $100 million endowment for scholarships to the school, fulfilling a high priority to ensure top students can afford a medical education, Garrett said.

Students will train in several of Hackensack Meridian Health’s 16 hospitals, including four of that are listed among the top 10 facilities in New Jersey, including the No. 1-ranked

Research shows physicians often practice where they train, which would help the state ease a shortage of an estimated 3,000 doctors by 2020.

The innovative curriculum will help future physicians navigate major changes in health care that are underway in the U.S., including the transition to value-based care in which physicians and hospitals are paid to keep people well.

It’s a major shift from fee-for-service medicine in which providers are paid for each treatment and procedure.

David William Gillespie David William Gillespie, 76, of Kearny died Aug. 5, 2018.

Born to the late William and Letitia (Miller) Gillespie, David was a lifelong Kearny resident. He proudly served his country as a sergeant in the Air Force from 1963-1967, stationed in Germany as a medic. After his service, David was a mail carrier in Kearny for many years.

He was loved by all of the residents along his route, receiving many job offers after his retirement. He accepted one at Charlie’s Nursery in North Arlington, where he could exercise his passion for gardening. David was a member of the Meadowlands Area Killifish Association (MAKA), and was an avid New York Giants fan, and a World War II history enthusiast.

He especially loved caring for his many tropical fish, and tending to his garden, where he grew the best tomatoes around.

David was the dear brother of Suzanne Gillespie and thelate Donna Jeanette; cousin to Malcolm and Sherrie Miller, Heather Bunge and Debbie Orrigo, and a good friend to the Morrison family, Mike DeGenova and John and Cindy Myslenski.

He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.

“What I’ve seen is people are tired of the old-fashioned experience where there’s waitress service.

People are on tight schedules — they want to get in, get their meals and then get home.”

And that was evident during our visit. While some dined-in, many took their lunch orders to go — and it took no more than five minutes give or take from entry, to ordering, to walking out with freshly prepped meals.

“Fast-casual dining is the fastestgrowing style of restaurants,” Apostolopoulos noted. “When you keep in mind we use the best ingredients — we hope to be very competitive and grow.”

But Apostolopoulos can’t do all of this alone.

His brother, Soto, is his partner — and he says he’s vital to the operation. He oversees the day-today operation and gets right into the hard work of the restaurant, donning an apron as all other employees do.

“My brother, Soto, loved the idea,” Apostolopoulos said. “He was on board right away. He’s a great organizer and a clean freak … consistently neat.”

Emma was retired from Food Associates in Kearny where she had been an ad assistant. She was a long-time member of the Arlington Players Club.

The Kearny Rotary recently donated non-perishable items to the non-profit organization NJ FOOD & CLOTHING RESCUE. The outreach program assist those in crisis due to natural disasters, veterans, homelessness and more.
