VICTORY IN IRELAND St. Columcille United Gaelic Pipe Band is first from U.S. to win All-Ireland Championship

Members of the Kearny-based St. Columcille United Gaelic Pipe Band celebrated winning the AllIreland Pipe Band Championship recently. They were the first non-Irish or U.K. band to ever win the prestigious competition.

HEY’RE NOT THE BEATLES. They’re not The Rolling Stones.

They’re not Queen.

But they are the first North American band to win the AllIreland Pipe Band Championships.

That’s right, Kearny’s very own St. Columcille United Gaelic Pipe Band became the first band from outside Ireland or the U.K. to ever win the contest that takes place annually in Ireland.

The All-Ireland Championships, alternating every year between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, are organized by a committee with five personnel each from the Irish Pipe Band Association and the Northern Ireland Branch of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association.

How one person’s needless fear led to an unnecessary death

IM ALFIERI WILL never forget the date June 27, 2018.

Because it was that day her daughter, Allison Elizabeth Gaynor, took her last breath at the tender age of 24. Allison was, as many who knew her would tell you, a gentle soul.

Ally Gaynor, 24, died of an overdose in late June. She didn’t need to die, though, because her friends could have helped her — but didn’t — for fear they’d be arrested or prosecuted.

She had a great affection for her cats and was known to treat them as though they were humans — as if they were children of her own.

And despite all the beautiful things Ally possessed in this life, there was something else — something that can grab a hold of anyone, a hold of the best of us.

She also had an affinity for opiates. And it was those hideous drugs that wound up taking her life that late-June day, just a little over a month ago.

To understand all of this, let’s go back to the day she left this world — and a few days before.

Alfieri says her daughter, who had struggled with the demons of addiction for a while in her short time on earth, had been clean for quite some time. But like every mother, Alfieri says she knew something was wrong with Ally — and worried she would relapse if she hadn’t already.

If only her instincts had been wrong.

Alfieri says that fateful day, Ally and two of her friends copped heroin. They took it.

That same day, the trio stopped at a fast-food joint on Passaic Avenue in Harrison, just past the Bridge Street Bridge. At some point, Ally disappeared and went into

the ladies’ room. Five minutes went by. Then 10. Then 20. Then 30.

At this point, someone in the triumvirate, apparently, realized too much time had gone by. He called 9-1-1. The other person they were with took off and left, scared. By the time EMTs got to Ally, 30+ minutes had gone by. The first responders were able to get a faint heartbeat — but the truth is, it was too late.

Ally died on scene of a heroin overdose.

Her friend, a man, waited too long to call 9-1-1, apparently because he was too afraid something would happen to him when police arrived.

According to Alfieri, had he called 9-1-1 even so much as 10 or so minutes earlier, we wouldn’t be telling Ally’s story, because she would still be alive.

What’s worse? Alfieri says this same man is someone who Ally saved just weeks earlier by administering Narcan after he had overdosed.

Ally knew — but this guy didn’t — that when you’re with someone who overdoses, and do what you can to help, in most cases, you cannot be arrested, charged or prosecuted. So instead of sharing a story of triumph — how Ally’s friend saved her in return, we instead share

the story of how people must know there is a Good Samaritan law on Jersey’s books. If someone you are with overdoses, and you’ve taken drugs, too — you won’t be arrested for helping.

Instead, you’ll simply be doing what one person was too scared to do — help.

George King is the Chief of the Kearny Police Department. He explained the law and how the Kearny Police Department — and other departments statewide — handle it. And it’s very simple.

If you, or someone you’re with, is overdosing — and someone calls for help — no one will be prosecuted or arrested so long as distribution of the

OPIOID CRISIS drug is not involved.

“If someone is overdosing, call the police,” King stressed. “The spirit of the law is not to prosecute anyone overdosing or anyone seeking help for someone overdosing. You will not be charged. The attorney general’s guidelines are clear.

“What we want to do is make sure the person who overdoses gets help. In fact, sometimes we’ll even offer referrals for help.

“This is happening way too much and people need to know helping is more important than anything else.”

Now this doesn’t mean you’ll be able, if you possess, let’s say heroin, to leave with your drugs if someone ODs. Police will confiscate any and all contraband. And, if it appears someone is a distributor, said person won’t be immune to arrest and/or prosecution.

But the bottom line is — if Ally’s friends had called for help sooner, not only might she still be alive — those who were with her would not have been arrested.

For King — and police everywhere — it’s still about making the call.

“We can’t guarantee a life will be saved if people do make the call, but making the call is better than not making it,” King said.

Not sure more truer words have been spoken.

The 51-foot long love letter

Fortunately, he didn’t have to go overseas, but instead served out on the West Coast of America — mostly in the State of Washington, but elsewhere, too, Isabel says.

But none of this is why this story exists today for you to read. Instead, it’s about something Isabel did for Manny whilst he was thousands of miles away, across the continent.

You see, she missed Manny when he was gone. She was deeply in love with him. Isabel Forlenza has so many fond memories of her late husband, Emanuel “Manny” Florenza Sr. The pair met when they were in the fifthgrade at the 14th Street School in Newark. A lot of time passed and they never dated. But when both were around 14, they reconnected, fell in love, and were destined to get married.

The West Hudson Arts and Theatre Co., under the direction of Jerry Ficeto, has a lot planned for the upcoming year.

I wanted to be sure to share that information with you since many of our readers are fans of W.H.A.T. Open auditions for the first show of the 2018/2019 season, Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple,” take place Aug. 14 & Aug. 16 at 7 p.m., at the W.H.A.T. Theater, 65 Oakwood Ave., Kearny.

The famed play features six male roles and two female roles, revolving around the mismatched roommates, the neat and uptight Felix Unger and the slovenly, easy going Oscar Madison.

The play is set in the 1960s in an apartment on Riverside Drive in New York City.

The classic comedy opens as a group of the guys assemble for cards in the apartment of divorced Madison.

And if the mess is any indication, it’s no wonder that his wife left him. Late to arrive is Felix Unger, who has just been separated from his wife.

Fastidious, depressed, and none too tense, Felix seems suicidal, but as the action unfolds, Oscar becomes the one with murder on his mind when the clean freak and the slob ultimately decide to room together with hilarious results as “The Odd Couple is born.”

It was the winner of the 1965 Tony Award, Best Author of a Play Nominee and 1965 Tony Award, Best Play.

And, of course, it became one of the best-

known comdies of the ‘70s, with Tony Randall as Unger and Jack Klugman as Madison, the wacky sports reporter and die-hard Mets’ fan.

Here are the available roles: MADISON A recently divorced sportswriter living in New York. Hosts a weekly poker game at his apartment, which he opens up to his friend Felix who is going through his own divorce.

Witty and sarcastic as well as a laid back slob.

UNGER A hypochondriac newswriter going through a divorce. Moves in with Oscar which proceeds to drive the both of them even further up the wall.

Fastidious and precise, prone to emotional outbursts and bouts of crying.

MURRAY One of Oscar and Felix’s poker buddies. A cop who can seem a bit slow in mind and body at times, but turns out to possess a good heart and plenty of wisdom.

VINNIE One of Oscar and Felix’s poker buddies. A mild mannered family man, can seem to be under

his wife’s thumb for much of the show.

SPEED One of Oscar and Felix’s poker buddies.

A gruff, cigar chomping man, tends to make jabs at the other poker players, particularly Vinnie and Murray.

ROY One of Oscar and Felix’s poker buddies. Oscar’s accountant. Sarcastic, but not to the degree of either Oscar or Speed.

Tends not to appreciate change.

CECILY & GWENDOLYN Oscar and Felix’s upstairs neighbors. Pleasant and bubbly and very English, they get invited to the apartment on a double date by Oscar, much to Felix’s dismay.

Odds and ends A special presentation takes place next week at a chapel at 135 Highland Ave. It begins Aug. 7 at at 7 p.m., and takes place every Tuesday.

Continued from Page 4 did write to her. She was elated. She knew where her love was … and now it was her turn to write.

A friend of Isabel’s knew she was preparing to write to Manny — she was working for General Electric at the time — so she said, “Why don’t you use the teletype machine to write the letter?”

Isabel agreed.

And she wrote.

And wrote.

And wrote.

And wrote some more.

Finally, three or four weeks later, she was done.

While a teletype machine, today, is a foreign concept, you have to remember, it printed what was typed on a continuous loop of paper.

(Think of an old roll of paper for a fax machine.) It was nowhere near like today’s notion of a printer, where small

pieces of paper are fed, and each page is separated.

When the letter was done — it was 51-feet long. Think about that for a moment.

It was 51-feet in length. Go outside — and look about five houses away. That’s the approximate length of this love letter.

Eventually, Isabel found a way to mail this monstrosity. She couldn’t recall how it was packaged, but it did ultimately get to Washington State where Manny was serving. When he got it out of its packaging, he began to read it. No one knows how long it really took for him to do that — but his commanding officer at the time — a sergeant — saw the long letter.

“Soldier, wait here,” Isabel recalled the sergeant telling Manny. “I need to take a picture of this, if you wouldn’t mind.”

Manny agreed.

And, not too long thereafter, someone sent the photo to the now-defunct, but at the

time, New Jersey’s biggest newspaper, The Newark Evening News. And it made its way to the front page.

Isabel had no idea the photo was even taken — so it was a huge surprise to learn the entire state would get to see it.

“Everyone was telling me to pick up the newspaper because Manny was on the front page,” Isabel said. “It was the thrill of a lifetime.”

Manny has since died — but his widow still lives in North Arlington, just as she and Manny did as a married

couple for 40+ years. And while she misses Manny terribly, it was easy for her to share stories about her late husband.

“After the war, when he got back, it was hard to find a job,” she recalled. “His brother owned a grocery store, so at times he would bag groceries. He was also self-employed. He was great with electrical things. He could hook up appliances and so much more. He could do home improvement. He put in dishwashers. He even built people brand-new kitchens.”

Isabel says Manny was also everyone’s go-to guy for help.

“He had more friends than you could imagine,” she said.

It was all part of the Nutley Police Department’s fifth annual Junior Police Academy for fifth- through eighth-graders last week at the Spring Garden School.

Now, you might be wondering if these kids were in the program for weeks with that type of discipline and knowledge of the commands.

Try two days.

While that transformation is certainly fast — we visited the academy on its second of five days — Padilla says by the end of the week, the kids’ attitude toward one another and how they interact is completely different from the start of the week-long program.

“When they come here the first day, they don’t look out for each other,” Padilla said. “They’re not aware of other people, just themselves. But by Friday, they’re always looking to the person to their left and right and they’re always checking out and looking out for each other. It’s what we teach.”

Most local departments require an application — including grades and disciplinary records — from all of its junior cadets.

Not Nutley.

This academy is designed to help kids grow and, as Padilla describes, that should not exclude those who have been in some trouble.

“Some of those kids are the ones we want,” Padilla said. “Some of those kids are the ones that we maybe need to actually encourage to be a part of something so they do turn the corner and do the right thing. We want to make this available to everybody.”

The “recruits,” as they call the kids, and officers, are not the only ones at the academy throughout the week. There are also high school students who serve as squad leaders for the younger kids.

Jerry Gibbons, an incoming freshman criminal justice major at Montclair

State University, takes pride in the difference he is making for these kids, even if it does mean sacrificing a week from his summer vacation.

“Knowing that I’m helping is the biggest thing,” Gibbons said. “And also knowing that I’m making a difference for these kids.

Whether it’s teaching them actual policing things or just how to care for one another.”

Team-building and communication exercises are big at the academy and are designed to encourage the kids to have a desire to be involved in something bigger than themselves. That’s a lesson that has not snuck past recruit Kyle Algieri, as she detailed just how impactful those activities have been on her and her fellow recruits.

“It’s been pretty helpful.

Some people are good with working with other people and some people like working alone. But this makes them better at working with other people,” Algieri said.

There’s a lot more that happens during the week, too. Guest speakers were scheduled to visit, a pizza party was only a few days away and a trip to Funplex was waiting for them on Thursday. But when asked about the possibility of returning next year, that’s what got young Otto Fabianich the most excited.

“I was a little bit disappointed when the National Guard was not going to come because that’s what I want to be when I grow up.

So maybe next year, they might come and I could see them,” Fabianich said.

While it’s not often you hear a kid in elementary school speak passionately about their future, that excitement about the program and what it has provided these recruits was met all across the board.

The recruits’ were to have graduated the academy at Spring Garden on Friday, July 20.

Literacy group seeks volunteers Literacy NJ West Hudson is recruiting volunteer tutors to help adult learners improve their literacy skills. Woman’s drill stolen from her car A New Street woman told police she parked her car on her driveway the night before and upon returning to it the following day on June 24 at 9 a.m., she observed the door open a Dewalt drill and battery missing from inside. The value of the missing items is $100.

He’s nabbed after stealing from car

A victim called 911 June 24 at 8 p.m., to report a man inside his vehicle. The victim followed the man to stores in Bloomfield and was able to describe suspect to police.

Bloomfield police detained the suspect until Belleville Officers arrived. Arrested was Jermaine Jernigan, 45, of East Orange, who was charged with burglary into a motor vehicle.

The suspect also had an open warrant and was remanded to the Essex County Jail.

He took her iPhone in broad daylight

A victim told police she was walking her dog June 25 on Hornblower Avenue at around 4 p.m., when a man approached her and snatched her iPhone from her hand and fled north on Hornblower Avenue. The victim was not harmed during the theft. The suspect was described as a thin black man, approximately 6-feet tall, wearing a black shirt and black pants. An investigation remains open.

That’s Walgreens’ stuff, not yours

Detectives received information on individuals selling merchandise and selling them to numerous bodegas out of town. While conducting surveillance, detectives observed two subjects enter a Walgreens on Washington Avenue at 8 p.m., June 27, car-

rying nothing. The subjects later exited Walgreens and one suspect removed items from his waistline and placed them in the other suspect’s backpack. Detectives stopped both suspects who were found to be in possession of $77 worth of merchandise stolen from Walgreens. Both subjects were taken into custody on scene. Justin Morgan, 38, of Brick and Olivia Wares, 24, of Belleville, were both charged with shoplifting. They were released on their own recognizance.

He didn’t belong in that car A Union Avenue resident told police on June 17 that as she as she arrived home at around 3 a.m., she observed an unknown man in her father’s vehicle. The man reportedly saw her and fled on foot from area. The victim

was able to ID the suspect to officers. The suspect was found attempting to hide under an vehicle.

Marco Costa, 26, of Harrison, was taken into custody and charged with burglary, resisting arrest, possession of burglary tools, possession of a hypodermic needle, theft of lost property and credit card theft.

Not so wise to ‘hide’ behind a pole

Officers on patrol around 4 a.m., June 19, on Honiss Street, said they observed a man carrying two brown boxes whilst walking down street. When the suspect noticed the police, they say he attempted to hide behind a pole. Eventually, officers stopped the suspect and determined the packages had been stolen from a local busi-

ness. The suspect, Brandon Caldwell, 31, of Newark, was taken into custody. The boxes contained electronics worth approximately $280 and were returned to owner. Caldwell was charged with theft by unlawful taking — and was later released on his own recognizance.

No leaf blower for you …

Calvin Battle, 59, of Newark, was arrested June 19 shortly after noon on Washington Avenue and charged with burglary and theft. Police say a victim told them he observed Battle enter a shed and take a leaf blower and attempt to leave. The victim was able to detain Battle until police arrived. The leaf blower, fortunately, was returned to its owner. Battle was remanded to the Essex County Jail.

KPD: Talk about unwelcome visitors

KEARNY– On July 19 at 1:09 a.m., KPD Officers Christopher Montes and Giovanni Rodriguez responded to the area of Devon and Tappan Sts. on a report of a man wearing dark clothes and a hoodedsweatshirt going into parked vehicles. While checking the neighborhood, Rodriguez saw a man matching the description enter a private home on Duke St. According to police, Montes and Rodriguez made contact with a resident at that address “who reported that she usually leaves her outer door unlocked, and as she talked to the officers from the doorway, they could sense something was wrong.”

They entered the house

and reportedly found Ramon Martinez, 45, homeless, “hiding behind the door with an assortment of items recently stolen from nearby vehicles.”

Luckily, police said, the woman had not been threatened or harmed. The items reportedly in the suspect’s possession? Two flashlights, one glove, a set of headphones, two watches, 12 CDs, a portable speaker, a cigarette lighter, a cell-phone charger and eight lottery tickets.

Martinez found a home in the Hudson County Jail on a warrant charging burglary, theft, possession of drug paraphernalia (glass pipe) and possession of burglar’s tools.

He reportedly also was wanted by the Essex County Superior

Court (no-bail warrant).

Police said computer database checks revealed Barela’s real identity and that he had numerous warrants for his arrest: three from Kearny (each carrying $100 bail for local ordinance violations); one from Bloomfield ($250 full bail for disorderly conduct), and one from Harrison ($200 full for an ordinance violation).

He was sent to the county jail with new complaints charging hindering apprehension and drinking alcohol in public.

July 18 At 1:46 a.m., Officer Nicole Williams was flagged down by a man who had parked his car in the area of Johnston and Kearny Avenues. The passenger door was open, and the driver complained that a man to whom he had given a ride from Harrison now would not get out.

To this, police said, the passenger -- Christopher Zapata, 20, of Belleville -- finally exited the vehicle, swinging his arms and yelling a tirade of sexually-based profanities at his “chauffeur’’ and the officer.

When neighborhood residents began waking up and rubber-neckers slowed traffic to take in the scene, Zapata was asked to quiet himself. Police said this only led to more screams of profanities, so the officer told Zapata he was under arrest -- but he allegedly then tried to walk away. He did not get far.

Apprehended by Williams, he was found to possess six bags of marijuana, police said.

Zapata was sent to the county jail on a warrant charging possession of pot and paraphernalia, possession with intent to distribute CDS, intent to distribute within 500 feet of a public park and 1,000 feet of

a school, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.

July 20 Officers Mariana Figueiredo and Jordenson Jean responded to New Lawn Ave. on a 10:28 a.m. report of a one-car accident. Upon arrival, they were told by Officer Joseph Martin that he had northbound Kearny Ave. closed for construction “when he saw a car coming straight for him that appeared that it was not going to stop.”

Martin sounded the siren in his police car, at which time the approaching driver made a sharp turn onto New Lawn, striking a storm drain at the curb, blowing out two tires and damaging his fender and wheel rim. In plain view in the vehicle, police said, were hypodermic syringes and two spoons with white residue and burn marks on them.

Police said the driver, John Enright, 45, of Kearny, failed a battery of field sobriety tests, was placed under arrest and sent to the county jail on a warrant charging possession of the syringes and drug paraphernalia. He was also charged on traffic summonses with careless driving, DWI, and DWI in a school zone.

••• Det. Michael Andrews was patrolling the LA Fitness lot at 5:22 p.m. when he observed Marcin Smilgin, 41, of Hillside, wearing a construction helmet “and hunched over in the driver’s seat of an idling car, apparently unconscious.”

Kearny’s George: A grid star is born Jovan George is still just a 13-year-old eighth grader-to-be at Kearny’s Lincoln School.

But the young Kearny resident has his future already mapped out to detail.

“I want football to be my life,” said the ambitious teenager, who stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 265 pounds as a fledgling teenager. “I want to go to the National Football League.”

George used to play for the Kearny Generals youth football program before he simply got too big and too good, looking for better competition with the Bergen County All-Stars.

His mother, Candace Illingworth, knew that Jovan was simply getting bigger and better than the rest of the kids his age.

“He was taller than everyone else, too,” Illingworth said.

“I actually liked being bigger than everyone else,” George said. “I

liked playing the skilled positions, but I knew where my future was going to be. Ever since I put the pads on and the helmet, I felt that football was my sport.”

George’s uncle, Kearny Parks and Recreation Director Ralph Cattafi, also knew that George was a special kind of player. So Cattafi took his nephew to a series of tryout camps and showcases to display the rare talent that George possesses.

Last April, Cattafi took George to a two-day tryout at Edison High School at a showcase run by an organization called USA Football.

“There were 500 kids from grades six through 11 there,” Cattafi said.

“They put the kids through two days of workout with no equipment.”

By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com Abbey Granelli is nine years old and headed into the fourth grade at Kearny’s Roosevelt School. Abbey – and she will be the first to tell you that it’s Abbey with an “EY” at the end – loves playing basketball. Abbey will tell you that as well.

“I love playing basketball,” young Abbey said. “I play basketball almost every single day.”

Young Abbey should love playing hoops. After all, Abbey’s grandfather is part of basketball royalty.

Abbey’s grandfather Mike Granelli was one of the most successful and storied women’s basketball coaches in NCAA history. When he retired in 2004, Granelli, a former long-time resident of

Kearny, compiled a historic 32-year career at St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, becoming one of only three coaches in NCAA Division 1 women’s college basketball history to ever win 600 games at one school.

The other two are in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, namely Jody Conradt of Texas and the late Pat Summitt of Tennessee.

Granelli won at least 17 games in 23 of 24 seasons and took his team to the NCAA Tournament nine times, a record for any coach in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

For 17 years (1972 through 1989), Granelli handled double duties at St. Peter’s, also serving as the men’s soccer coach and has recorded more victories than any

other soccer coach in the school’s history, winning 163 times.

Granelli is a member of the St. Peter’s, the MAAC and the Hudson County Athletic Halls of Fame.

Young Abbey knows that her grandfather was a famous basketball coach, but wants to be able to carve her own niche in her young basketball life.

That’s why Abbey attended the Kearny Girls’ Basketball Camp recently, held at Kearny High School, under the tutelage of Kearny High head girls’ basketball coach Jody Hill, a legend in her own right after a brilliant playing career at Harrison High and Pace University, becoming a member of the Hudson County Athletic

Pulcine, who also loves playing softball, but was overjoyed to be part of this camp, was quick to point out one specific drill she learned during the course of the four-day camp.

“I learned how to dribble two basketballs at the same time,” Pulcine said, then displayed that prowess almost immediately. “I love it. I had an amazing time here. It was amazingly fun and makes me want to play more.”

2017-2018 Observer Female Athlete of the Year Meagan McClelland, who has begun her college soccer career at Rutgers University, playing for Kearny native Mike O’Neill.

That’s why it was refreshing to see so many youngsters attending the camp.

Maybe some might become future players for Hill at Kearny High.

“That’s what makes this so enjoyable, seeing all the little ones,” Hill said. “That’s what it’s all about. We had a nice group of girls ages eight-to-10 and that’s the perfect age. They all want to learn about the game. They are like sponges. They soak it all in. They want to learn everything, even the basketball vocabulary. They all get excited when they learn something new. They’re learning and having fun at the same time. Every kid tries to get something out of camp.”

And it’s a time of year that Hill really likes.

“I can never get bored being with the kids,” Hill said. “I always look forward to camp. It’s one of the most enjoyable things of the summer. It actually makes my summer, seeing the same kids coming back. I feel like I’m making an impact on them. I see them have the same focus and they keep getting better and better. It keeps me going.”

Hill has enough already on her plate, being the mom of 7-year-old Ethan and 4-yearold twins Macey and Owen.

“Since I now have little kids, it makes being around little kids a lot of fun,” Hill said.

Let’s see if the coach says the same thing come bed time.

In the meantime, Abbey Granelli knows that if she needs a pointer, that she has someone to go ask now – her grandfather.

“I will ask him things,” Abbey Granelli said.

card of someone who aspired for football greatness from Kearny, none other than the late Alex Webster, who was a superstar with the New York Giants in the franchise’s glory days of the late 1950s and early 1960s, playing in a total of six NFL championship games, winning three.

Webster was eventually honored with his permanent place in the Giants’ Ring of Honor in MetLife Stadium and was feted in December, 2011. Unfortunately, Webster died just four months later in Florida.

But George was impressed to know that another football great came from Kearny.

“I thought that it was so cool that there was another person from Kearny in the Hall of Fame,” George said. “When I got to the Hall of Fame, I went to look for him and I was glad I found him.”

George said that he liked being on the All-American team with other players from around the country. Only three players from New Jersey were selected.

“I thought it was pretty cool to meet other people from the United States,” George said.

“I got to know them. Knowing other people can benefit my life and perhaps tell me something that I never knew

“I was honored to get a chance to play for my country,” George said. “I was very proud. I knew that it would take a lot of hard work and dedication to achieve something like this.”

In fact, George mentioned hard work and dedication a total of eight times in a recent 20-minute interview. Yes, he’s a teenager who has his head on straight and knows what he wants.

“I knew I had a chance to make this team,” George said.

“I knew how talented I was. I was not intimidated. I have a lot of confidence in myself.”

What did it mean for George to be among the football legends in Canton?

“It was very impressive,” George said. “We had someone there who was telling us stories about the NFL legends.

It made me feel like I can be there. I have to work harder and have the dedication to get to that level. It’s my dream.”

George already goes to regular training sessions at FASST in Lyndhurst working with special coaches Ryan Marshall and Paul Johnson. On Monday, the FASST staff works with George on his lower body weight. Wednesdays are set for upper body and lifting weights. Fridays are relegated to speed and agility training.

And after going to Canton, George feels like he’s a better football player. He’s a defensive tackle first and foremost.

“I feel like people are going to expect big things from me,” George said. “I know I have to get better each and every day.”

His mom is impressed.

“He’s very driven and very determined,” Illingworth said.

“If he has his goals, then I’ll support him.”

But George is still only in eighth grade. He has a bright future, no doubt. But talking a good game and playing one are two totally different things. Jovan George seems to realize that as well.

“I like different players, like Kyrie (Irving, the New Jersey native who plays for the Boston Celtics) and LeBron,” Duarte said.

“I learned about dribbling the right way and shooting,” Duarte said. “There are different ways to dribble if someone is guarding you or not. It was a lot of fun being here. It’s my favorite sport. It was my first time here, so it was fun.”

Kolton Gryckiewicz – spelled exactly as it is pronounced – is an 8-year-old third grader from Garfield School.

“I learned a lot of skills, like dribbling and shooting,” Gryckiewicz said. “I learned to put the ball behind my back. All the stuff I learned, I can take down to the courts and take on some people.”

Gryckiewicz is a fan of the

Golden State Warriors and Stephen Curry – who else? – as well as the Philadelphia 76ers and Ben Simmons.

Ryan Drennan is a 10-yearold who also comes from basketball royalty.

His late grandfather, Bill “Red” Drennan, was the head coach at places like Marist of Bayonne and Dickinson in Jersey City, while his father, Sean, is the current head coach at Dickinson and the former head coach at Kean College.

“Sometimes, I feel like I have to play basketball because of them,” Ryan Drennan said. “But I really like the game. I like watching the games and I like watching my Dad’s team play.”

So what did the coach’s kid learn?

“I learned that it’s important for everyone to touch the ball,” Ryan Drennan said.

“I always want to play like him and be like him,” William Souza said of his older brother. “He’s a good player who plays hard. That’s what I want to do. I want to play hard and improve. I think I’m getting better at defense and rebounding.”

And what would William be

doing if he wasn’t going to the camp?

“I’d probably still be sleeping,” William Souza said.

“This was good because I got a chance to play.”

Elijah Rivera is 14 years old and will be a freshman at Kearny High next month.

“This helped me a lot,” Rivera said. “I needed more athleticism and I learned moves to be able to score. I also have better control of the ball now.

I want to keep playing basketball. This taught me how to learn the players here and their offense and defense.”

“I think the whole week went very smoothly,” McDonnell said. “I think the kids enjoyed themselves.”

What’s in a (street) name?

F

ollowing World War II, the Bergen County Planning Board and the Mayor and Council of North Arlington approved the naming of a street in a new property development in honor of the first borough man to have been killed in that war.

The little thoroughfare — just four short blocks running from Schuyler Avenue to First Street — soon received its official street sign, proudly proclaiming it as Eckhardt Terrace.

And so it remained for 70 years.

Problem: It was misspelled.

The hero being honored was George Frederick Eckardt — not Eckhardt.

deferment since he ran the family dairy farm (a dairy business being considered crucial to the war effort), but he elected to serve. By 1944, he was in England with Company B, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division.

There, on May 29, 1944, he celebrated his 30th birthday. Just a week later, he was killed, being among the first infantrymen to land on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Nichols told us that, when his family received his personal effects, they included a wallet that “had been soaked wet and still contained some sand” from that Normandy shore.

Eckardt, initially buried in a U.S. military cemetery in France, was, at war’s end, eligible for re-interment at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, but his father, George A. Eckardt, wanted him brought home to the place where the family had a cherished personal history.

The Eckardt dairy farm — located just east of Schuyler Avenue — had been a North Arlington landmark for decades.

(Some readers might even recall the horses that were still there in the 1970s.) George A. founded the Schuyler Fire House in 1916 and

was its first chief; his son Walter became chief in 1970, and in 1995, the building was formally dedicated to George F. Of his war-hero son, Nichols noted, her grandfather said, “He was born here. He went to school here. He worked the farm here.

He belongs here.”

So, in 1946, Eckardt’s coffin was flown into what was then Idlewild Airport and, with a U.S. Marine escort, transported to North Arlington. A military and firefighters’ procession accompanied him to the cemetery, but, at the family’s request, the graveside service was private.

George F. Eckardt lies peacefully in a grave at another Arlington Cemetery — the one just over the North Arlington border on Schuyler Avenue in Kearny, two miles south of the farm where he had grown up. (And his name — spelled correctly — is inscribed on the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Va.) Now, as for that “Eckhardt” street sign: “It was always wrong, ever since the street opened in 1948,” Nichols said. “Over the years, my Uncle Walter went to Town (Borough) Hall many times trying to change it,

but kept meeting with opposition.”

Nichols herself searched municipal records trying to find the original documentation, but to no avail.

Then, in March of this year, the new, correct sign magically appeared.

“I was told the change had been approved at the end of 2017,” Nichols said.

Better 70 years late than never.

Still, the family would have liked some evidence of the original tribute. And it appeared.

Let us say, also magically. Just a couple of weeks ago.

On July 15, two of Nichols’ cousins — Walter’s daughters Diane Piscal and Susan Leier of North Arlington — were going through some family papers. In a lockbox, they found a 1951 letter from thenBorough Clerk Robert B. Galloway.

It refers to the naming of “Eckardt Terrace” and reads, in part: “Back in 1948 when the developer of the property made application … to cut the street through from First Street to Schuyler Avenue, the Mayor and Council asked him to name the street in memory of your son George who was the first North Arlington boy to lose his life in World War II. “The map showing the street so names [sic] was approved by the Bergen County Planning Board on March 2, 1948.

“The request by the Mayor and Council was made at a conference meeting of the Council.”

So there.

By the way, one of the happiest things about the street-sign correction is that it can be seen and appreciated

by Nichols’ mother, Clara Eckardt Mayer — George F. Eckardt’s youngest sibling and only sister — who is 97 years old. And, of course, lives in North Arlington.

How much time Egan will be spending in Lyndhurst and the terms of an expected state loan to make up the deficit and its repayment by the district are questions yet to be answered, Grieco said. Whether Egan will be continuing to monitor the Belleville school district at the same time as Lyndhurst is another unknown, he said.

With the balance of summer winding down and the fall term rapidly approaching, it’s essential, Grieco said, that he and district business administrator Scott Bisig huddle with Egan to review the district’s fiscal readiness so that decisions can be made about funding any additional staff hirings, student extracurricular activities and the day-to-day business of the district.

This spring, as an economic move, the school board eliminated five supervisory positions and employees in those positions exercised their seniority rights to “bump” others in lower job titles, prompting the board not to hire five new teachers.

One potential consequence of those moves, Grieco said, is that he may have to involve himself more in the process of evaluating lower-level employees.

With a myriad of unsettled issues he now faces, Grieco – a 1994 Bloomfield High School alum whose last job was superintendent of schools in Elmwood Park – applied for the Lyndhurst job in the wake of the departure of his predecessor Shauna DeMarco because, “I felt it was time for me to have a new challenge. And I always knew Lyndhurst was a great community.”

A 14-year educational administrator, Grieco did two stints in Elmwood Park.

From September 2003 and April 2007, he was the district’s director of special services and assistant principal. Then – after working at New Providence High School as athletic director/assistant principal – he returned in February 2010 to Elmwood Park, serving as high school A.P./ A.D., then assistant superintendent

“So, I left with two years remaining in my contract,” he said.

Grieco has a bachelor’s degree in special education from Monmouth University (where he played four years on the football team), an master’s degree in educational administration from Kean University and is pursuing a doctorate in education from Liberty University.

During his middle school principalship, in 2013, he crossed paths with Egan who had been assigned as fiscal monitor of the Elmwood Park district to address an imbalance in the district’s finances – later discovered to be $2.1 million.

Advanced the money by the state, the district is in the process of repaying the loan and actually ended this past year with a surplus, according to Grieco. Egan left Elmwood Park in 2015 for his then-new assignment in Belleville.

The Elmwood Park district is nearing completion of a $9 million referendum project on its school buildings. Also during his Elmwood Park tenure, Grieco secured a $100,000 grant to install 150 security cameras, sound alarms and bulletproof film on all first-floor windows and exterior doors and distribute 2-way radios.

“I feel that the district was left in good shape,” he said.

Singleton posted the $50 bail and was later released on a summons charging him with driving an unregistered vehicle. The Chrysler, meanwhile, was impounded and it will remain that way until Singleton can prove he re-registered the car.

Arrested on warrant Robert P. Ramsey, 32, of Harrison, was arrested on a warrant July 9 at around 7:40 a.m. on South Fifth Street, police say. Police went to Ramsey’s home to serve the warrant and when they arrived, Ramsey’s mother granted them access to her son, according to a report.

Ramsey was remanded to the Hudson County Jail, according to police.

obituaries@theobserver.com Sally P. O’Hare Sally P. O’Hare, (nee Connolly), 84, died Saturday, July 28, 2018, at her home in Kearny.

The funeral will be from the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, on Tuesday, July 31, at 9 a.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Cecilia Church, Kearny, at 10 a.m.

Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Mrs. O’Hare was born in Mhow, India. She then lived in Ballymoney , Ireland, before moving to Belfast, Ireland. She immigrated to this country in 1957 and settled in Kearny.

She was a computer operator for Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Newark for 26 years before retiring in 1994.

Sally’s life centered around her church, faith, family and friends. However, she was also a long-time, die-hard, suffering Mets fan. Even on the last day of the season with the Mets well out of contention by 20 games or more, she would be cheering as if they were in first place. She loved her trips to Atlantic City and her visits to her financial adviser (otherwise known as a lottery ticket dealer) to make her investments.

Sally is survived by her husband, Paul A. O’Hare; four children, Mary White and her husband, Charlie; Paul O’Hare and his wife, Marie; John O’Hare and his wife, Maureen and Michael O’Hare and his wife, Sandra; her niece, Joan McLaughlin and her husband, Kevin. She is also survived by her sisters, Angela McCarthy, Margaret Brennan and Eileen Davie. She was the grandmother of Kevin and his wife, Molly, Brian, Michael and Maureen White; Sean, Robert, Patrick, Juliet, CharPrayer to St. Jude

He was a graduate of Seton Hall University and Seton Hall Law School. He was an attorney with Aegis Insurance Service, East Rutherford, in the claims department for 20 years.

He was the husband of Leanne Plunkett. The father of Terence and Brian (Kelly) Hogan and Christine (B.J.) Kobilarcik, he was also the brother of John (Patricia) Hogan and grandfather of Jake, Lexi and Zoe. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Philip Falzarano Philip Falzarano died peacefully on July 24, 2018.

He shared 58 years of love and adventure with all who were fortunate to know him.

Phil was born in 1959 to the late Philip and Martha Falzarano of Nutley. He graduated from Rutgers University with an undergraduate degree in chemistry and went on to earn a doctorate of chiropractic from Sherman College.

Phil was passionate about his work and many of his patients became lifelong friends.

He ran a successful practice, Ridge Chiropractic in North Arlington, for 30 years.

When he wasn’t working, Phil enjoyed traveling. He loved finding new places and seeing the world. At one point, he lived in Italy with a host family and while there, discovered cooking, which become his passion. He also loved outdoor activities, especially hiking and skiing.

Recently, he and his partner of 31 years, Ken Cunningham, dreamed of retiring to Spain.

They had traveled there and

found it to be welcoming and beautiful.

Phil leaves a lifetime of amazing memories to Ken; brothers Pat (Carol) and David (Eva); and many dear friends, patients and extended family.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Marie, and a brother, Joseph.

throughout Ireland, but the rules were changed in the ‘80s to allow overseas bands to compete.

The contest features many of the top pipe bands in the world, including this year’s Grade 1 All-Ireland Champions, and 11-time World Pipe Band Champions, the Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band.

This year’s event featured 60 bands from Canada, Ireland, Northern Ireland and the United States and took place in New Ross, County Wexford, which is the ancestral home of the Kennedy family.

But all that competition from various countries did not stop St. Columcille.

The band that they defeated to win the title, St. Mary’s Pipe Band Derrytrasna, had just finished tearing up the competition throughout the United Kingdom. When it came to going up against these other bands, St. Columcille’s Pipe Major Emeritus Joe McGonigal said the band had confidence — but never had the expectation of winning it all.

on the prize list. The other major members of the band thought we could get on that list, but we didn’t know if we would win or not. We’re still on Cloud 9 to be honest,” McGonigal said.

For McGonigal, piping has always been a part of life. His grandfather, Sean, led the band from its very beginnings back in 1949. Always a dream of his to bring the band overseas, Sean never got the opportunity due to a fatal heart attack suffered while leading a junior band, which featured Joe and his brother, during the 1965 Kearny Memorial Day parade.

From that point forward, McGonigal made it his

mission to bring St. Columcille outside the country and make some noise in competitions.

“We finally did it in the late 1990s when we went to Scotland and finished fifth,” McGonigal said. “For me, my brother, my family and the generations of McGonigals — for us to get that is still ... I almost have to pinch myself and here it is two-and-a-half weeks later. It’s almost like winning the Super Bowl or the World Cup, something tremendous that could never be taken away. Here I am one of the oldest guys in the band and to win that thing is a dream come true.”

The band has no shortage of confidence when it comes

to sustaining the success and repertoire they have built over the years. The member ages range from 13 to close to 70 —with a few other young members learning the skill as well. While McGonigal does not expect the band to compete in the All-Ireland Championships next year because of the trip’s cost, he hopes St. Columcille makes its triumphant return in 2020.

“The future does look good because we have a lot of students coming up in our ranks,” McGonigal said.

“We have a 7-year-old girl learning the tenor drum. We also have kids who are 10, 11, 12 years old, teenagers and college kids just looking to learn. Our future looks
