Kearny crime rate continues to drop

T

he Kearny Police Department has released its Uniform Crime Report Index for 2017, and the stats show a 29.3% decrease in total serious offenses as compared

with the previous year.

In 2016, the total tally in the eight major crime categories covered was 1,078.

Last year, the number dropped to 762.

According to a statement posted

on the town’s website, “The decrease continues a downward trend in reported crimes in recent years. Of note, the 2017 number is less than half of what was reported a decade ago in 2007.”

Real-world experience for special-needs kids

H

udson County Executive Thomas DeGise understands why it was important for the county to get involved with a new program for specialneeds high-school seniors.

It was 36 years ago that his daughter was born with autism.

Back then, there weren’t as many programs out there for the special-needs community. But now, thanks to a partnership between the county and Hudson Community Enterprises — an organization designed to give the special-needs community a “chance to succeed” — Project Search opens doors to the community even more than it ever has before.

It’s a program that holds a special place in the county executive’s heart.

“People in the specialneeds community need a way to come to grips with their situations and go on to become productive and active citizens,” DeGise said. “With this program, through Hudson Community Enterprises, they will go on to do very important work in a variety of different ways.”

Some background.

According to program documents, Project Search is a “one-year, businessled, unpaid internship for students with disabilities in their last year of high school. The program takes

place entirely at a host business site. It provides students who want to work a chance to explore careers and develop transferable job skills.

“The combination of instruction and immersion in the workplace prepares young adults with disabilities to make successful transitions from school to productive-adult life.”

To achieve success, students “rotate” through three internships, usually three months at each site.

They’re trained. And they do a lot more than simple, menial tasks.

For example, just last week, DeGise says he visited a work site — the county courts — where he met with a group of current program participants who were barcoding important court documents. He says not only was the work not menial, as a technical novice himself — there’s no Smartphone at his fingertips as he uses a classic flip phone — “I’m not so sure I could do this work,” he said.

“All of the participants were so eager to explain to me what they were doing, how they were doing it, why they were doing it,” DeGise said. “What they were doing was very high-tech for the courts. It was really cool to see them in action. They are all so hard-working and reliable — and they appreciate the opportunity

DeGise, himself a 25-year educator, recalled how years ago, there was a print shop at Dickinson High School in Jersey City.

“The tasks there were menial,” he said. “It was very low-skill work and required little education. They’d take the tiny letters to place them on plates. While there are no more jobs like that, it didn’t require much. The expectations with Project Search are much higher.”

DeGise says he was unaware of other counties with similar programs; however, he said he’d be willing to share if any other governments in Jersey — or elsewhere — were interesting in implementing the same.

“I am very proud we are

leading the way,” the county executive said. “I can’t say it enough how very impressed I was by the kids in the program now. They were so eager to show off what they were doing.”

The program — open to special-needs high school seniors throughout Hudson — sets criteria for potential candidates. Students must: • Be 18 to 21.

• Be in their last year of high school.

• Meet all academic requirements for graduation.

• Possess basic communication skills, whether verbal or supported by technology.

• Be aware of appropriate social, grooming and hygiene skills.

• Be able to pass a drug screening and background check.

• Be able to access public transport independently (travel training will be provided.)

ProjectEngin and the archdiocese began collaborating on the STEM Fair Program in 2016.

Over the last few months, ProjectEngin led workshops that brought educators from 31 schools together.

Additionally, representatives from ProjectEngin followed up with these educators by paying onsite visits and providing support whenever questions arose via Skype and Slack.

During the workshops, educators worked collaboratively with colleagues in other schools to reimagine what has been a traditional approach to science projects. The educators explored using the Engineering Design Process to guide students as they designed solutions to real-world challenges using Science, Technology and Math.

Through the workshops, educators explored innovative ways technology, empathy and scientific knowledge could be used to better the world.

They then brought this knowledge back to their schools where students, used the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals as the basis for their projects. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development are a set of goals to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity that were established by the U.N. in 2015 as part of a new, sustainable-development agenda.

Each goal has specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years.

Said Barbara Dolan, assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and assessment for the Archdiocese of Newark: “The willingness of the participating schools to embrace the process has been very impressive. As I visit the school-level STEM fairs and listen to students explain their projects, I am aware of the many learning outcomes

represented in those projects.

“In addition to science, technology, engineering and math, the projects reflect global awareness, collaboration, critical thinking, community service, communication, research skills and perseverance. Students speak about how rewarding it is to plan and build something that is designed to improve life for others. They are enthusiastic and feel empowered to make a difference.”

Ann Kaiser, CEO of ProjectEngin, echoed Dolan’s words.

“The core mission of our work at ProjectEngin is to help young people connect what they learn now to the future that they can create,” she said. “The STEM Expo program is based on empathy, engagement and empowerment. Students focus on engineering solutions to global challenges one place, one project at a time.

“The program provides students with the skills needed to tackle a large issue and to work creatively and collaboratively. They are asked to go beyond the classroom walls in terms of understanding the enduser and to think out of the box in order to develop a solution. The enthusiasm, optimism, engagement and overall ownership that we saw at various school STEM fairs provided proof that this has truly been an impactful learning experience for all of these young people.”

STEM has inspired the students at St. Michael School in Union, among others.

“Given today’s everchanging world, those concepts are invaluable to any student’s advancement as they progress not only through their middle school years, but high school and hopefully beyond. Plus, the students absolutely love not only the activities but also the choice and independence they have in implementing those activities. It’s changed the way I’ll teach forever.” said Dr. Patrick Aiello, a St. Michael’s teacher and STEM coordinator.

Plant a ( free!) tree The Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Parks and Forestry is making 90,000 free tree seedlings available to residents through the New Jersey Tree Recovery Campaign, an ongoing effort of the State Forest Service, the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation and other partners.

Registered municipalities — including Belleville and Bloomfield — will receive up to 2,000 seedlings each for distribution to residents through early May. Hudson County will also be receiving seedlings.

Residents are eligible to receive bundles of five free seedlings at any distribution site. Proof of residency in the community where seedlings are distributed is NOT required.

Some tips to remember: • Plant seedlings promptly to ensure they take root and thrive.

• Be mindful of the planting site’s surroundings by avoiding overhead utility lines and proximity to structures in case of storms and consider the size of the tree when fully grown.

• Moisten roots before planting.

• Dig a hole two to three times larger than the roots when spread apart. Do not plant roots too deep or shallow.

• Place wood-chip mulch around the base of the seedling.

• Water the seedling regularly but do not over-water, as this can cause roots to rot.

The N.J. Forest Service Nursery in Jackson grows 500,000 trees annually, helping to protect, preserve and promote native species such as the eastern red cedar, sycamore, and northern red oak. By Karen Zautyk What do Louis Armstrong, Conway Twitty, Mr. Peanut and Elsie the Cow have in common?

To you, nothing. But to yours truly, they are each a part of some of my fondest childhood memories, and those are linked to summer vacations in wonderful Atlantic City — back in the day.

The shore resort has seen its ups and downs in recent decades, and now it’s pinning at least one of its hopes on literal ups and down — a ginormous, $14 million Ferris wheel (called simply The Wheel) on the Steel Pier. According to a page 1 story in The Star-Ledger — headlined “With Steel Pier wheel, revival coming around” — the structure, “227 feet from its base and 300 feet above sea level, offers views of the city, the coast and the Atlantic Ocean.”

Family attractions like this, along with rejuvenation of the city’s remaining casinos, are providing new optimism — although the Atlantic City Press last week cited a report that, in 2017, A.C. recorded the lowest number of visitors in 30 years.

No one knows what the future will hold — but this column is about the past, long before the first casinos arrived, and before the city started its pre-gambling decline in the late ‘60s.

When I was a child, A.C. was THE place to vacation in summer, and my family did so every year. Asbury Park, Belmar, etc., were for daytrips.

In A.C., you stayed at least a week.

And the place we always stayed was the Seaside Hotel, at Pennsylvania Avenue and the Boardwalk, just around the corner from the Steel Pier (which was a lot bigger than it is now.)

On my first visit to the pier, I met the “real” Elsie the Cow, which — if

I remember correctly — the Borden Co. had housed in an indoor “barnyard.” I cannot recall if Elmer was there, no matter. The 5-year-old me was thrilled to meet a “celebrity.”

And then we went across the Boardwalk to the Planters store, where the “real” Mr. Peanut — complete with top hat, cane, white gloves and monocle — shook my hand.

Days (except for time on the beach) and nights were spent on the Boardwalk. Most mornings began with my father and me riding rental bikes for miles to the north or south.

(My mother had never learned to ride a bicycle.) At night, we would walk, visiting the numerous piers, going on the carnival rides, and just enjoying the beauty of the place.

As I grew older, we›d bring one of my cousins to A.C. with us. This was at a time when kids were safe on their own, and we two pre-adolescents could explore the wonderland together. One afternoon, my cousin Janet and I went to the Steel Pier and wandered into what I guess you›d call a ballroom. Large dance floor and a band up on stage. We walked right up to the footlights, and I found myself staring into the eyes, and trumpet, of Louis Armstrong.

Just more A.C. magic.

If you check out ‘50s/’60s photos of the Boardwalk, you’ll notice that no one is walking around in a bathing suit. Swimwear was prohibited there; it was to be worn on the beach only. In fact, at the Seaside, you couldn›t even walk through the lobby in a bathing suit. There was a locker room for guests, with a special exit that led to a walkway under the Boardwalk to the beach.

I recall, too, that at night (after 6 p.m.?), women were not allowed to wear shorts in the lobby, and men

had to wear jacket and tie. Really.

These were formalities to which no one objected. Can you imagine such rules today?

As for Conway Twitty: When I was a pre-teen, he was a BIG star.

Not as big as Elvis, but a celebrity all the same. And even more famous than Elsie the Cow. During one of our vacations, Twitty was that week’s star act at the Steel Pier.

My cousin (this time it was Tricia) and I decided to stake out the stage door — although it was behind a locked gate and about 50 yards away down the pier.

We perched on the Boardwalk railing, clutching our autograph books, and waited.

More A.C. wonder.

Within minutes, it seemed, there the singer was, accompanied by what we guessed was his manager. We approached politely and asked for an autograph, to which Conway Twitty — THE Conway Twitty — replied in his Southern drawl: “Sure. But c’mon and walk with me awhile.”

(What?!?)

The manager unlocked the gate, and Tricia and I, on either side of the star, strolled with him all the way to the stage door. And I have no recollection whatsoever of the conversation. We got our autographs, he disappeared inside the pier and we remained stunned.

I can still hear his voice. “C’mon and walk with me …”

Oh, Atlantic City. What a magical place you were.

(Note: For those of you who never heard of Conway Twitty, if you Google his picture, please specify the YOUNG Conway Twitty. You will see the heartthrob. Alas, like Atlantic City, age took its toll.)

Howard awarded Army ROTC scholarship Kaleigh Rose Howard, a senior at Kearny High School, has been awarded a three-year Army ROTC Scholarship.

Howard, the daughter of James and Linda Howard, is one of 2,000 students nationwide to win the scholarship, which identifies members on a competitive basis of high academic achievement, leadership and service.

Approximately 14,000 high school students apply for an Army ROTC scholarship each year. Of those, 1,000 are selected to receive 4-year scholarships and 1,000 are selected to receive 3-year scholarships.

Since its inception, Army ROTC has provided leadership and military training at schools and universities across the country and has commissioned more than a half million Officers. Nutley man arrested on drug-selling charges in Rochelle Park: reports A 44-year-old Nutley man has been arrested and charged with selling drugs out of a Rochelle Park hair salon, according to reports.

Anthony Bianchi, 44, was reportedly seen making a sale of what is believed to have been prescription pain pills, reports said.

He was arrested Friday, March 30, after police said they found Endocet, Percocet and Oxycodone, all illicit and highly

addictive opioids — in addition to $10,000 in cash — at his hair-cutting station.

Bianchi, who was released on his own recognizance, is the son of North Arlington’s Republican Mayor Joseph Bianchi.

County files suit vs. big pharma Hudson County Executive Thomas DeGise announced last week that the County of Hudson has filed suit in state superior court against the makers and distributors of synthetic opioids like Oxycontin and Subsys.

In an electronic filing to the court last week, legal counsel for the county allege the defendants, much like tobacco companies once did, attempted to downplay the addictive nature of their products causing massive harm to the public health, welfare and safety and that licensed distributors of opioids failed in their legal duty to effectively track where the drugs were ending up.

“Hudson County taxpayers bear the cost every day for the explosive rise in addiction since the creation and

promotion of these synthetic opioids in the 1990s. They have paid the spiraling bill for what we have spent and will continue to spend in corrections, rehabilitation and treatment services; and our families have borne the terrible burden of losing loved ones to these addictive drugs foisted on them by unscrupulous profiteers,” DeGise said. “Just because they wear suits and ties doesn’t make them any less a bunch of pushers — these guys just make a lot more than the corner dealer.”

These organizations shaped the tone of continuing medical education — the chief way doctors and other care providers stay current on what is considered “best practice” in patient care, the county alleges.

The evidence that synthetic opioids created in the 1990s were less addictive than their predecessors goes back to a

single, questionable study that gained unfortunate prominence thanks to drug companies’ promotion of it, the county alleges.

Distributors of the drugs, such as major pharmacy chains, must be licensed. As a condition of licensure, they are supposed to carefully track prescriptions and report suspect activity. The suit alleges they did not, looking the other way in the name of profit.

Hudson County is one of a growing number of places across the nation suing opioid manufacturers and distributers

in state and federal courts.

The goal of these filings are twofold: to seek monetary damages, but also to seek through legal action to halt the continued promotion of these drugs and demand appropriately responsible levels of distribution tracking be maintained as part of any settlement or final judgment, the county says.

Two private law firms, Eisbrouch Marsh, of Hackensack, and Sanders Phillips Grossman, of Garden City, N.Y., are handling the litigation for Hudson County.

— Hudson County Exec. Tom DeGise of Chosen Freeholders voted to authorize the suit. The board also assisted in the selection of the firms involved in the suit.

The litigation is expected to continue for years. However, settlements can occur at any time. However, there is also the possibility that Hudson’s suit could eventually be consolidated into a larger settlement action initiated in federal court, where similar litigation is before a federal district court in Cleveland.

But the federal government has no jurisdiction in this kind of state action — so inclusion in such a consolidation would be Hudson County’s prerogative.

The suit alleges: • From the time morphine was first isolated for medicinal use, physicians have understood that opioids are risky medications that leave patients prone to addiction and overdose. That is why heroin was made illegal in 1924, and it is why the first synthetic opioids (Percocet and Vicodin) were prescribed only for shortterm pain.

But after Purdue created and patented oxycodone in the 1990s, it marketed the drug as safe, non-addictive and appropriate for chronic pain — even though it had no legitimate scientific evidence to support these claims. And as other opioid manufacturers likewise invented proprietary opioid formulations, they also marketed their drugs as safe, non-addictive and appropriate for chronic pain.

• The opioid manufacturers ran a decades-long misinformation campaign to convince doctors and patients everywhere that prescription opioids were a miracle cure

for chronic pain, and should be prescribed widely.

To win over skeptics of the drug makers’ claims, manufacturers hired wellregarded doctors, who styled themselves as painmanagement experts, to advocate for use of opioids.

They also sponsored “pain advocacy” groups, which acted as fronts for the drug companies’ message.

Doctors accepted the misinformation presented to them over the years. Believing the opioids were safe and effective for chronic pain, doctors prescribed the opioid manufacturers’ products in larger numbers, resulting in billions of dollars in profits for Purdue and its top executives.

Meanwhile, opioid manufacturers knew their claims lacked scientific basis.

As more doctors prescribed prescription opioids, and the manufacturers continued to conceal and hide the truth about their drugs, the rates of opioid addiction and overdose skyrocketed.

Rather than seeing a national crisis, pharmaceutical distributors saw an opportunity for massive profits. They sent prescription opioids to any and every prescriber or pharmacy that placed orders, even though they are required to stop shipment on suspicious orders and report them to law enforcement.

Stopping suspicious shipments would mean losing out on millions in illicit profits, and so the opioid distributors did nothing. They stood aside and allowed select prescribers and pharmacies to divert massive amounts of prescription opioids into the black market.

Kearny hoops awards dinner brings former Net O’Koren to speak For all intents and purposes, it was not a season to remember for the Kearny High School boys’ basketball team. The final record was lopsided in the wrong direction. There were struggles to get the best players on the floor for a host of reasons. It was virtually a nightmare of a year.

But that doesn’t mean that the players on the team didn’t try hard, that they didn’t care about their general welfare as basketball players. No, this bunch of Kardinals tried their very best to be successful. Sometimes, that doesn’t translate in the win column.

In the eyes of head coach Bob McDonnell, the Kardinals deserved to have a chance to celebrate their efforts.

That’s what happened recently when the 60 or so members of the entire program _ freshman, junior varsity and varsity _ gathered for the annual awards banquet at the American Legion on Belgrove Drive.

“My personal feeling is to have a banquet outside of the school,” McDonnell said. “We give out various awards. Besides getting varsity letters, it’s a way to recognize their individual efforts. We didn’t have a good year, but the kids learned a lot and they grew up a lot. We lost 10 games by eight points or

less, so that shows the effort.”

The players’ parents were also in attendance for the banquet.

“This gives the parents a chance to appreciate their efforts of their kids,” McDonnell said.

The featured guest speaker was former New Jersey Net standout Mike O’Koren.

The Jersey City native, who played high school basketball at Hudson Catholic in the 1970s, went to the University of North Carolina and earned AllAmerica status under legendary head coach Dean Smith. O’Koren was a first round selection of the Nets in 1980 and spent 10 years in the NBA with the club. O’Koren eventually became an assistant coach with the Nets and the Washington Wizards for 10 years, before becoming an assistant coach at Rutgers University under former colleague and friend Eddie Jordan.

Getting someone of O’Koren’s status to come speak to the kids of the Kearny basketball program was no small feat.

It started because O’Koren’s childhood friend Ron Steinmetz was McDonnell’s CYO basketball coach in Jersey City.

By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com The Belleville High School baseball team dropped two games on Saturday to Verona and Montclair Kimberley Academy, putting their early season record at 0-3, but the biggest losses probably happened to the Buccaneers in the offseason.

The program lost two talented players to transfers.

Josh Rodriguez, the supertalented infielder/pitcher, took his talents to St. Joseph of Montvale. Evan Torres, the promising catcher, moved to Kearny.

Both would have been juniors this season and both would have played key roles for veteran coach Joe Sorce’s team.

“We hated to see them leave,” Sorce said. “Josh led the team in home runs and RBI last year. Evan caught the

bulk of the games.”

But Sorce didn’t want to dwell on the losses of those two players, nor the other Buccaneers currently on the sidelines, nursing injuries.

Sorce can only control what he can control. He can’t focus on the players that aren’t there, just the ones who remain.

“We’re going to be alright,” Sorce said. “We have six kids back from last year and we’re looking for those kids to improve. I wouldn’t say we need them to carry the load, but we are going to rely on those kids and need others to fill in and step up. We need everyone to play more than one position to give us some versatility.”

Sorce said that his team gained “valuable experience” in six preseason scrimmages, four of which were played on artificial turf. Considering the late winter weather conditions, it was nothing short of

a miracle that the Bucs were able to play six scrimmages.

“We have a young team,” Sorce said. “We’re still a work in progress.”

One thing that Sorce has to be happy with is a plethora of possible pitchers. As many as nine different Buccaneers can take the mound this season.

That kind of pitching depth is not easily found.

Senior Danny Pinedo, the soccer standout, is one of the team’s top hurlers.

“He throws a lot of strikes,” Sorce said of Pinedo. “He has two or three different pitches and changes speeds well.”

Senior Justin Klus is another right-handed hurler and starter.

“He has added some velocity,” Sorce said.

Junior Sebastian Alverio is another righty.

The Bucs dropped a 5-3 decision to Verona and an 8-0 setback to MKA as part of Saturday’s day/night road doubleheader. They dropped a 9-4 decision to West Orange in their season opener last Wednesday.

“It’s a good league,” Sorce said. “West Orange has a nice team. West Essex will definitely be good. It should be a good, solid schedule for us.”

Sorce knows that his team will have to get better as the season moves on.

“That’s definitely the goal,” Sorce said. “Especially with a younger team. We just want to get better every day. Overall, I think we played a solid first game. We have to learn from our mistakes. The experience is valuable. In the long run, we’ll be okay. We have a great bunch of kids. They’re all hard working. The kids all have good relationships amongst themselves. There’s nice chemistry on the team.”

It’s just hard to overcome the losses that a coach can never anticipate, like the ones that come with unexpected transfers.

But the Buccaneers will survive. They always do.

“I reached out and spoke to Mike about coming to speak,” McDonnell said. “Mike was great about it and had no problem. I tried to get him in the past, but things didn’t work out.

This time, they did.”

O’Koren, who now resides in Westwood in Bergen County, was glad to be able to come to speak to the youngsters.

“I’ve known Bobby for about 100 years,” O’Koren laughed.

“We practically grew up together.”

O’Koren said that he had a simple message for the Kearny players.

“I told them that they had to focus on going to school and getting a good education,” O’Koren said. “I told them that they had to work hard in school and then work hard at their game. I said that the fundamentals of basketball will never let you down.”

O’Koren focused on his incredible basketball background, coming from a humble background in the Jersey City housing projects to getting a chance to play for one of the greatest coaches in the history of college basketball in Dean Smith.

“I touched on playing for Coach Smith and what that was like,” O’Koren said.

O’Koren’s play at Carolina opened the door for another former great Tar Heel named Michael Jordan. In fact, O’Koren said that he actually scored two points more in his North Carolina career than Jordan did _ but O’Koren spent four years at Carolina, where Jordan left early for the NBA Draft.

Still, that story gave the kids in attendance a perspective of just how great of a basketball career O’Koren enjoyed.

“At first, I never heard of him,” said senior Mike Fitzpatrick, who earned the Academic Achievement Award at the banquet. “But then when I knew he

was coming, I looked him up and seeing his background was crazy. To think he was coming to speak to us. He played in the NBA and has all the basketball background in the world. I was very impressed to hear him speak and to get to meet him.

He has a lot of knowledge. It was very humbling that a guy like him would come to speak to us.”

“I didn’t know who he was,” said Nicolas Souza, who earned the Coaches’ Award. “But when he was talking, I couldn’t stop listening. He said some great things and I was absolutely impressed. He stressed fundamentals and when he talked about that, I said, ‘Wow, it’s true. This guy is really good.’”

O’Koren said that he spent countless hours playing in the St. Joseph’s School courtyard in Jersey City, a place that had metal backboards and metal nets.

“I spent hours upon hours there,” O’Koren said. “I wish I had a nickel for every hour I spent there.”

O’Koren said that he had a great time with the kids and their parents.

“I hadn’t seen Bobby (McDonnell) in such a long time, so it was good to see him,” O’Koren said. “I felt really comfortable with the kids. They were great. Their parents were there. It was a great night.”

O’Koren had one final message to the youngsters.

“I said that the camaraderie I had with my teammates was so important,” O’Koren said. “The memories are priceless. That’s very important. I’ve come to the fact that I’m getting older.

I think I had a good career. If someone recognizes me for what I did, then that’s great. I

enjoyed the game.”

“For him to share his knowledge with us was incredible,” Fitzpatrick said. “I learned a lot from him.”

Fitzpatrick said that he was honored to get an award, even after the Kardinals struggled so much this season.

“I learned a lot this year,” said Fitzpatrick, who is headed to Rutgers-Newark or the New Jersey Institute of Technology in the fall to study business. “It was more of a rebuilding year for us. We grew a lot as a team and got closer. That meant a lot to me. It showed that all my hard work on the floor and in the classroom didn’t get unnoticed.”

Souza was also happy to receive an award at the banquet.

“It makes me work even harder,” Souza said. “It shows me that I’m doing the right thing on the court. It makes me believe in myself more and more. I know I’m doing my job and I’m going to help the team get more wins in the future.”

“I have to give credit to Mike,” McDonnell said. “He stuck around and talked to the kids and their parents. The kids all researched him and recognized who he is.”

The individual award winners were Francisco Penaherrera (Freshman Award), Ryan Guttadauria (Junior Varsity Award), Oscar Szymzcak (Varsity Most Improved), Chris Serrano (Hustle Award), Esteban Martinez (Defensive Award), Souza (Coaches’ Award), Fitzpatrick (Academic Achievement Award) and team manager Angel Rodriguez (Charlie Dolan Award for dedication and work within the community).

In fact, Rodriguez played with the varsity on Senior Night against Irvington and scored the first two points of the game.

All in all, it was a great night for the Kardinals. It was a night to celebrate after a season where there wasn’t much celebration.

NA’s McKenna fires no-hitter against Bogota, has four-hit game vs. Weehawken

By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com At the end of the 2017 high school baseball season, North Arlington shocked a lot of people by being a sub-.500 team that not only qualified for the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group I playoffs with an 8-15 record, but as a No. 14 seed, the Vikings won twice in the playoffs, knocking off Dunellen and Bloomfield Tech before finally falling to eventual sectional champion Glen Ridge in the sectional semifinals.

Part of the reason for the Vikings’ late-season success was the play of then-sophomore Eric McKenna, who pitched a gem against Dunellen, striking out 13 in the victory.

of the new season because the Vikings didn’t get many chances to get outside due to the lousy winter weather the area was experiencing in the early spring. There’s only so much a baseball player can do when there’s snow constantly falling and accumulating.

“I felt like I was throwing the ball pretty good, but that was in the gym, so it was hard to tell,” McKenna said.

So when the season began last Wednesday, after all the stops and starts and postponements due to the wicked weather, McKenna was on the mound for the Vikings, facing Bogota.

Needless to say, the conditions were not ideal for baseball.

“I couldn’t feel my pitches because it was so cold,” McKenna said. “I just didn’t feel it.”

But North Arlington head baseball coach Paul Marcantuono had faith in his ace junior right-hander.

“I feel like he’s one of the

best pitchers in our league (the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference-Meadowlands Division) hands down,” Marcantuono said. “He has All-(Bergen) County stuff. I think he can be one of the top pitchers in northern New Jersey and in all of Group I.” However, before the season started, Marcantuono noticed a little glitch in McKenna’s delivery.

“There were some mechanical things we had to work on,” Marcantuono said. “He had to keep his eye on the target.

For some reason, right as he was getting ready to throw, he would look over at third base and take his eye off the target.”

McKenna has no idea how that habit started.

“I didn’t realize I was doing it,” McKenna said. “I never looked at the catcher. I always looked away. I don’t know why. I didn’t know until the coaches told me. My teamContinued on the next page

mates are helping me to keep looking at the target. It’s definitely helped with my command.”

Marcantuono said that McKenna also had to position his body better when he was on the mound.

“He needed to stay back more instead of leaning forward,” Marcantuono said. “I think that helps his velocity.

Eric is a creature of habit. We had to explain a few things to him that would make him better. But once he starts to do it, he gets it. He’s had success the other way growing up. We just wanted to make him better.”

So with the alterations in his pitching motion, McKenna took the mound against Bogota, ready to begin the most important season of his talented high school career.

You see, McKenna is one of the most diverse and most talented athletes in northern New Jersey. As a student/athlete at a small Group I school, McKenna was asked to participate in more than varsity sport. Most athletes go the conventional route of playing football in the fall, basketball in the winter and baseball in the spring.

But McKenna is a standout soccer player in the fall, one of the best two-way performers in the NJIC. Last season, McKenna led the Vikings with 14 goals and added four assists.

In the winter, McKenna is a sensational two-handed bowler, helping to lead the Vikings to the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1A, Group I championship.

And come spring _ if the spring ever really comes _ McKenna plays baseball.

“I definitely think it’s different than most,” McKenna said. “I played basketball as a freshman, but then switched to bowling and we’ve done well. I wouldn’t say it’s tough.

It keeps me active and busy.”

McKenna manages to juggle the three sports, even when the seasons sometimes overlap.

“I went to team camp with

soccer and still managed to do my things with bowling and baseball,” McKenna said. “I just got used to doing all of it.”

“He’s a confident young man,” Marcantuono said. “He’s also super competitive. He competes with himself. I think bowling helps him with that, because he’s always chasing his high score. He wants to be better all the time. I think one sport relates to the other. He’s an All-League soccer player, an All-County bowler and I think that all carries over to baseball.”

After making the changes in McKenna’s motion, Marcantuono noticed the difference.

“He just needed to focus on picking up the target,” Marcantuono said. “He’s staying back more. I think he’s throwing harder. His breaking stuff is better. He’s staying on top of the ball. I think his arm angle changes a little bit from the windup to the stretch (position) and I think that has been effective. He throws a hard slider and a good change-up.”

In the Vikings’ first game, McKenna went out and merely threw a no-hitter, striking out seven and walking none in a 10-0 win that was shortened to five innings due to the 10run rule.

Regardless of the innings, it’s still a no-hitter, the first of McKenna’s varsity career.

“It didn’t feel like it because the game was shortened and it didn’t feel like a no-hitter,” McKenna said. “But it’s still a great accomplishment. I’m proud of it. I definitely didn’t expect that in my first game.”

In the Vikings’ third game of the season against Weehawken, a 12-2 North Arlington victory, McKenna had four hits, including a triple, drove in three runs and scored twice. He also made a brilliant play in the field from his shortstop position.

“The ball rolled to the wall (in Weehawken),” Marcantuono said. “Eric got the relay from short left field and threw a cannon shot to home to get the runner at the plate. It must

have been about 250 feet on a line, a perfect throw. It was one of the best plays I’ve ever seen anyone make in my 12 years of coaching.”

For the week, McKenna had six hits and four RBI. Needless to say, for his efforts, McKenna has been selected as The Observer Athlete of the Week for the past week. McKenna is the first honoree of the spring scholastic sports season.

Marcantuono was asked if McKenna was a better hitter or a better pitcher.

“I think he’s very good at both,” Marcantuono said. “He makes plays in the infield that are just incredible and makes throws basically because of his arm strength. I don’t want to sell him short as a shortstop, because he’s as good as anyone there. But when he’s on the mound, we feel like we can compete with anyone.”

McKenna is pleased with his incredible start, especially at the plate, batting .545 after the first week of play (the Vikings are 2-1).

“I had a pretty rough year last year hitting, so I’m glad I got off to a good start,” McKenna said. “I think this is only going to make me better in the future. It’s a big step for me.”

Especially since McKenna is always his own toughest critic.

“I do tend to be hard on myself,” McKenna said. “I just have a strong passion for baseball and always want to do well. I don’t want to focus on hitting too much, because it might take away from my pitching.”

“I think he has fiery competitiveness,” Marcantuono said. “It’s super competitiveness. He’s a perfectionist and is hard on himself. But I think his potential is through the roof. He’s only going to be better.”

Although he’s only a junior, Marcantuono believes that the time is right for McKenna to start thinking about playing college baseball. Although he’s excellent in soccer and bowling, the future is in baseball _ and McKenna wants it to be that way.

“We believe he can play at the next level,” Marcantunono said. “He’s only 16 (years old).

We think he’s hopefully going to grow a couple more inches.

He loves baseball and loves competing in baseball. I think the team is very confident behind him when he’s on the mound. There’s a little more pep in their step. We can go after teams with him on the mound. He gives me a lot more confidence in our team.”

So what does McKenna do now for an encore? A no-hitter in his first start and four hits in the third game?

“I’m surely not expecting the same results,” McKenna said. “But it’s a good basis for the rest of the year. I think last year I was able to make a name for myself. Now I want to get a little more exposure.”

A no-hitter in his first start _ and Athlete of the Week from his local newspaper _ are not bad ways to get noticed.

“Hopefully, those things will help,” McKenna said.

Of course, they will.

WCA focused on health issues

Members of the Woman’s Club of Arlington wore red to their meeting at the Girl Scout House in Kearny on Feb. 13, to show their support for women’s heart health in conjunction with the American Heart Association’s annual Go Red for Women campaign. Awareness and education of heart-healthy practices is especially important to the club as three of its members underwent surgery last year due to complications from heart disease.

Members also learned about the opioid epidemic and its impact in Kearny and surrounding towns from a presentation by Kim Luciano, founder of Education Awareness on Drug Dependency (EADD)/Kearny CARES (Center for Addiction Recovery Education & Success).

An important part of Luciano’s mission is to make people aware of and provide education about the epidemic. Members were encouraged to keep track of their

own prescription medicine and to ensure that it is not accessible to others, particularly children and grandchildren.

Education also takes the form of training in the use of the opioid antidote — Narcan. When a user overdoses on heroin, it can be a life-threatening emergency.

According to Google, “symptoms may include shallow breathing, confusion, lessened alertness and loss of consciousness.”

In the event of an emergency, the use of Narcan, administered through the nose, can provide a temporary block of receptors in the brain from the opioid, according to Kearny Emergency Medical Services (KEMS) Chief Harry McNeill. This treatment provides a window of hope of approximately 15 minutes. In extreme cases, two doses of Narcan are required.

Although Narcan can provide emergency relief, it is not the long-term solution.

Jack Elsmore, a former Kearny resident, has been an advocate for drug treatment for several years with numerous organizations, including serving on the board for the methadone clinic in Kearny, community coalitions and CARES in Rockaway.

Elsmore has been working with Luciano to form Kearny CARES and to provide further counseling, treatment and education for the broader Kearny community.

Luciano estimates EADD/ Kearny CARES has assisted at least 10 Kearny residents in getting treatment and staying sober and clean. Hon. John A. McLaughlin; was NJ Superior Court Judge The Hon. John A. McLaughlin, 83, of Kearny, died peacefully on April 7, at St. Michael’s Medical Center, Newark.

A funeral Mass celebrating John’s life takes place at St. Stephen’s Church in Kearny on Thursday, April 12, at 11 a.m.

Visitation is Tuesday, April 10, from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, April 11, from 4-8 p.m. at the Condon Funeral Home, 684 Kearny Ave., Kearny. (condonfuneralhome.com) John was born Oct. 31, 1934, in Newark to Margaret (Ford) McLaughlin and John McLaughlin. He was a lifelong resident of Kearny, a town he fondly called “Camelot.” He was a graduate of St. Stephen’s Elementary School, St. Cecilia High School and Seton Hall University where he earned his BA and JD. Judge McLaughlin’s life was marked with service — to his family, church and the public.

As a young man, he served as the National President of the Catholic Youth Organization and the NJ General Assembly.

He taught at St. Cecelia High School while attending Seton Hall Law School. He then worked in law in private practice, as First Assistant Prosecutor of Hudson County and as a Superior Court Judge of New Jersey.

A former Woodcliff Lake rabbi has been charged with sexually assaulting a boy in 1999, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

Menachem A. Weiss, 46, of Los Angeles, was indicted by a Bergen County grand jury on March 22 on two counts of aggravated sexual assault. Weiss is a married teacher, but the prosecutor’s office did not say where he teaches.

Woodcliff Lake police received information in December 2016 that a boy was sexually assaulted by Weiss between January and June 1999 when he lived in the borough, authorities said.

Weiss was arrested by the Port Authority police and was being held in the Bergen County jail. — Chris Sheldon

The most common crime recorded in Kearny, in both ‘16 and ‘17, was larceny — but even that declined, from 603 to 503. There was also a 59.2% decrease in robberies: from 49 in ‘16 to 20 last year.

The No. 2 spot in offense frequency went to simple assault (hands, fists, feet, etc.) but that, too, showed a dramatic drop — of 64.1%.

The total for 2016 was 220 incidents; for 2017, it was 79.

Other assaults (e.g., aggravated) totaled 29, compared with 34 in 2016.

Burglaries — including attempted — also remained fairly static: 61 in ‘16, and 55 in ‘17.

As for motor-vehicle

thefts, they dropped from 109 to 74 — down by 32.1%.

In 2017, Kearny recorded one attempted rape, and tragically, one homicide, its first in four years. (On April 10, 2017, Luisa Cristina Reyna-Tello, 46, was stabbed to death in her Chestnut Street apartment. Arrested and charged with the murder was Jose Castro-Lavado, 36, reportedly the father of her three children.)

“With a total population of 40,684 as of the 2010 census, there is one officer for every 380 residents in Kearny,” the website states.

That is reassuring, but note also that, according to the post, the KPD responded to more than 30,000 calls during the course of 2017.

Not all generic meds are made the same ... and it’s additives that make difference

f you take any kind of medication — for whatever the reason — chances are you’ve had a conversation with your doctor about taking generic drugs. In the course of your conversation, chances are you’ve been told the generics you’ve been prescribed are exactly the same as brand name equivalent meds that are available at pharmacies — usually for significantly more money (if you’re insured, the co-pay is higher, and if you pay out-of-pocket, forget about the astronomical costs.)

Yet the thing is, we learned recently, from a man whose family owns Arlington Pharmacy, Kearny, this couldn’t be further from the truth in some cases. But the reason why this is the case may come as a bit of a surprise.

Enter Hetal Patel.

Patel’s family has owned the Kearny Avenue pharmacy since 1980. Say you’re taking a medication that is 10 mg.

That 10 mg. of medication is so small in size that pharmaceutical companies must use additives to make the pills you’re taking large enough to be properly swallowed. And to make the pills swallowable, it’s the additives that are put into the medication that may, at times, cause severe allergies to the generic medication.

Were you aware of these additives? We certainly weren’t But before we go further into that, there’s another reason why there could be allergies to certain generics.

According to Patel, every single medication made in the United States must have a unique shape and it must have a unique color. In other words, if you were to make a side-by-side comparison of any two generic medications — including the very same generic that might be made by different pharma companies — no two will look the same, by shape or by color.

“And those colors contain additives that could possess something a patient might be allergic to,” Patel said. “This is a F.D.A. requirement. It’s very

strict.”

To help identify each drug created, pills are uniquely shaped, colored — and you may even notice there’s a series of numbers and letters imprinted on each pill. This is done to allow for immediate identification of medication’s name.

But it’s the additives that patients really need to worry about most when it comes to generic medications. And Patel offered an example of how one additive has affected one of his customers, who has a severe allergy to gluten.

“This patient’s high gluten allergy makes it necessary for us to keep a separate tray for dispensing medications for her,” Patel said. “The tray is cleaned every time we dispense for her and (the patient’s) name is kept on the tray so that it’s not used for anyone else. Even the slightest amount of gluten, which is used as an additive medications, could cause her a severe reaction.

“So we must do this for her — and we do so happily.”

So let’s say you do, indeed, learn that you’re allergic to a certain medication because of its additives? Patel says pharma companies have alternatives in play, designed to ensure you don’t go bankrupt. But it’s a bit of a process.

First, a doctor must write a letter to certify that a patient has a specific allergy to a medication.

“Then the doctor will send the letter to the pharmaceutical company,” Patel said.

Depending on the company in question, there are discounts or coupons — or other savings’ programs — available for the patient.

“In some cases, the companies will send coupons or other discounts to the patients so they can purchase brand names at an affordable price,” Patel said. “So if a person has an allergy, all is not lost with the allergy. It’s not a dead-end as one might expect.

There is hope.”

This should be particularly comforting to patients whose co-pays are high, who have a high-deductible insurance plan or, for anyone who pays fully out-of-pocket for their medications.

“The pharmaceutical industry is very sensitive to this,” Patel said. “While there is a need to verify the allergies, where patients react badly to a medication, it’s not all lost.”

Most manufacturers have a toll-free number patients may call to see what programs are available for patients with verified allergies.

Now don’t panic if you do, indeed, take generics and aren’t allergic to them. Patel says he estimates a “very high percentage” of the population won’t have such allergies and shouldn’t worry about taking generics.
