By Ron Leir rleir@theobserver.com LYNDHURST – It appeared that a pair of Essex County residents stopped by police had a lot of laundry in their vehicle but not the kind you put in the washer.

There was a distinctive odor coming from the laundry bags but it didn’t really lend itself to being cleaned.

Here’s an account of the incident from the Lyndhurst Police Department: On Sunday, Oct. 22, at about 10:20 a.m., Officer Joseph White conducted a motor vehicle stop on Park Ave. near the Rt. 3 overpass.

PARCC results inching up in Kearny

and Careers) exam this past spring, the results are — while not overwhelming impressive — somewhat heartening for local educators.

Flora Encarnacao, district director of curriculum & instruction for the

Kearny Board of Education, said, “the trends are upward” in English language arts/literacy and mathematics.

This is also true, she said, in the area of biology competency.

Encarnacao said the district has

seen increases in the number of students “meeting or exceeding expectations” in the subject areas tested.

Youth squad is on fire

KEARNY — Leonor Nasert is a very lucky mom.

A year-and-a-half ago, her daughter, a sixth-grader at the time, Alexis (Lexi) approached her to let her know she was dissatisfied with a lot that was happening in school.

“She had this vision,” Nasert said.

“She said the kids were self-centered, were too much into brand-name clothes.

She asked me, ‘How can we help them?’”

Two months later, a solution was born.

The Firesquad Youth Group.

The squad is faith-based, but is not church-based. Jesus is the central message of what they do. But it doesn’t matter if the kids — from sixth- to ninthgrade now — are Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim or even non-believers.

All kids in that age group are welcome.

Nasert says she contacted a pastor she knew, who is based in West Orange, to get tips on how to start a successful youth group. In June 2016, it all came to fruition when, at Nasert’s home, there were 28 kids at the first gathering.

The group now meets the first and third Thursdays each month at 7:30 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington, 663 Kearny Ave., Kearny.

Nasert was able to secure the meeting space because when Firesquad first began, they’d help stock First Presbyterian’s food pantry once a month (they still do.)

Someone at the church said it was only fitting that the church gave Firesquad the meeting space for all they’d done with the food pantry.

“It was simply amazing,” Nasert said.

“He said, ‘You do our pantry, now you use our space.’”

Each meeting kicks off with mingling and music, one of the most important part of any youth group. This allows the kids to get to know each other if they don’t already — or to strengthen already-budding friendships.

Afterward, there’s a “lesson” or discussion Nasert leads.

Among the topics of late: drug abuse, suicide, love, tolerance.

In fact, recently, Netflix’s controversial series “13 Reasons Why” was a huge topic for discussion.

“We wanted to give the kids a way to identify if someone is suicidal, following along the storyline of the show,” Nasert said. “It was very important that we did this.”

Each meeting follows this format.

Sometimes, Nasert will show a 7- to 10-minute video to augment the discussion. There is never a fee or charge to go to the meetings. Everything that happens there is confidential (unless, of course, a child’s life or the life of someone else is in imminent danger.)

Everyone is welcome.

“And they all wind up calling me ‘mom,’” Nasert said.

It’s not just the meeting, though.

The kids often go out, usually on Saturdays, to perform service projects.

The idea is to empower the kids — and to teach them to be leaders among their peers. They use the social-media hashtag #OneKindActAtATime.

One recent project involved supplying hotdogs, blankets and candy to Newark’s homeless.

The service projects have been so successful that Nasert isn’t always able to accommodate all the kids at the same time. Instead, they use a system that divides up the service projects equitably so all the kids have a chance to go.

“Again, this all happens on Saturdays,”

Nasert said. “The kids want to get up early on the weekends when other kids are sleeping in. They want to go out to help others. And the homeless people love the kids. When they go, it’s important for the kids to do all the work. Yes, there are adults there, but they stand back and the kids do the work. It’s incredible to see the results.”

Another highly successful service project happens monthly. The Firesquad goes to the Apostles House, Newark, and throws a birthday party for all the kids living there who have birthdays that month. They bring balloons. They paint faces. They eat. And each kid gets a present, thanks to donations from Walmart and BJ’s.

Nasert says she’s grateful to all who have helped her get Firesquad off the ground. Like Paul Rogers. And the Pioneer’s Club of Kearny.

Nasert also says the youth group takes up all her time — she says she’s fortunate to be able to do this, with her husband being the major breadwinner in the family. Still, she could use some help.

“More adult and young-adult volunteers I need,” she said. “I could definitely use more volunteers.”

Scoutmaster celebrates his 80th birthday On Oct. 15, Troop 147 Nutley Scoutmaster Al Welenofsky celebrated his 80th birthday on the summit of 4,180-foot Slide Mountain — the highest peak in the Catskill Mountains of New York — with his Scout troop.

Welenofsky has climbed Slide Mountain 16 times, plus the other 34 Catskill peaks over 3,500 feet in every month of the year. The Scouts celebrated their Scoutmaster’s birthday with a small cupcake with candle which was

carried to the summit in a protective container up the three-mile rocky trail on an overcast day.

The climb included 19 Scouts and six troop leaders, and took 2½ hours to get to the summit. The Scouts ranged in age from 11 to 16.

The Scoutmaster first joined Troop 147 on his 12th birthday — in October 1949 — and became the Scoutmaster in 1965. The Troop is sponsored by the Franklin Reformed Church of Nutley.

Nutley Hall of Fame honorees announced The Nutley Hall of Fame Committee has announced that eight new members will be inducted in 2017 — seven living and one deceased. The initial induction was in 2003 and new inductions take place in odd-numbered years.

This year’s honorees are: Henry Bunner The one 2017 posthumous inductee is Bunner, who lived in Nutley in the 1800s among a number of artists and writers. Bunner was best known

as the editor-in-chief of thethen popular “Puck” magazine, which he undertook in 1871. But, far more than that, he was a talented writer, illustrator and cartoonist. Bunner used his satirical pen to target greed and corruption in both political parties, as well as other then-current public issues. Along with the owners of “Puck,” he founded the New York Independent Party to foster non-partisan solutions to the nation’s problems.

Leonardo Capalbo A 1996 graduate of Nutley High School, Capalbo, has achieved one of the more difficult accomplishments in the entertainment world, namely, leading-tenor roles in grand operas. Phil Cuzzi A resident of Nutley for a number of years, Cuzzi has reached the pinnacle of sports officials. After paying his dues in the minor leagues and some early ups and downs in the Majors, he has worked steadily as a Major League Baseball umpire since 2000.

This is one of the more highpressure positions in all of sports, where critical calls have to be made before huge, partisan crowds. While not relevant to his selection, his work on raising funds to fight Lou Gehrig’s Disease through the Robert Luongo ALS Fund, which he initiated in 2003, is worth noting.

Rena DeAngelo A 1984 graduate of Nutley High School, DeAngelo has found an interesting niche in the world of filmdom in which to excel, namely, as a set decorator. She was a shared 2016 nominee for an Academy Award for her work on the movie “Bridge of Spies.” In 2008, she shared a Primetime Emmy for her work on an episode of the well-known television drama “Mad Men.” She has been nominated for several other awards from organizations such as BAFTA, the Art Directors Guild, the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the Online Film and Television Association and the San Francisco Film Critics’ Choice.

David Difrancesco Difrancesco is a photo scientist, inventor, cinematographer and photographer. His contributions to the technical aspects of film making are truly outstanding. Most notable was his position as director of the Pixar Photoscience Team at Pixar Animation Studios. He has earned two scientific and engineering technical Academy Awards and has 16 patents. He is a 1967 graduate of Nutley High School.

Tom Evans Evans is a lifelong resident of Nutley and a 1973 graduate of Nutley High School. A certified public accountant

(CPA), he began his 38-year career at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the world’s largest accounting firm, in 1977. With positions of increased responsibilities, he became a partner. Eventually he became the chief learning officer, responsible for the corporate education of some 39,000 U.S. employees. He initiated many innovative programs beyond the ordinary that made PwC’s programs the learning standard of the industry. In 2011, his responsibilities expanded internationally, when he was named development leader for PwC west cluster firms across North and South America.

His merit was recognized by “Corporate Learning Officer” magazine, which featured him on its cover, with an accompanying article, as its “2014 Corporate Learning Officer of the Year.”

David Gilbert A resident of Nutley since 1986, Gilbert has had a long and illustrious musical career.

The holder of a master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music, he is a virtuoso flutist and served as the principal member of that instrument with the United States Marine Corp Band. His fame in the musical world was garnered mainly as a conductor. While he conducted many ensembles, most notably he won the 1970 Dmitri Mitropoulos International Conducting Competition, was assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic and was principal conductor of the American Ballet Theatre. From 1980 to 1982, he served as principal guest conductor of the Beijing Central Philharmonic and was instrumental in its rebuilding as the first American musician to hold a position of prominence in China.

Adam LaReau LaReau is a 1999 graduate of Nutley High School, where, among his athletic achievements, he held four power-lifting records for his age group. He was appointed to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, where he continued to excel at sports.

Rains lead to KFD rescues

By Ron Leir rleir@theobserver.com KEARNY — Two water rescues were successfully performed by Kearny Fire Department crews this past weekend during the torrential rainfall the region experienced.

The first occurred, fire officials said, at 4:10 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 29, at Belgrove Drive and Passaic Ave. where a vehicle was found stuck in three feet of water with two occupants – a mother and her son – trapped inside with the water rising.

Nine firefighters responded in a John boat and extricated the pair, managing to get them into the boat and, ultimately, to safety, fire officials said.

Fire Chief Steven Dyl said, “water was coming into the car” as the firefighters made their way to the vehicle and, upon opening the vehicle’s door, the woman and her son were able to climb into the boat.

Asked why no barricades

had been set up to warn motorists not to use the lowlying Passaic Ave., Dyl said that because of the hard-hitting rainstorm, “our resources were stretched thin” and first-responders were doing their best to keep track of emergency situations as they arose.

According to reports that aired on two New York TV stations, the woman – whose husband is an out-of-town firefighter – had returned with her son from a school open house, exited Rt. 280 and was winding through East Newark down to Passaic Ave. when her car was engulfed by water from the swollen riverbank.

In the second incident, fire crews made their way to Turvan Road off the Belleville Turnpike, at 10:37 p.m.

Sunday, to access a man and a woman stranded in a stalled vehicle surrounded by about two feet of water.

An estimated 17 firefighters maneuvered a John boat and a roof ladder to reach the couple, get them into the vessel and steer them to high

ground and safety, officials said.

Additionally, at 12:12 a.m. that same day, the KFD was alerted via North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue to a report of a person in the Passaic River near the Pike. Dyl said water-borne firefighters from Kearny, Newark and Bayonne – part of a fireboat task force – navigated the river for about an hour before giving up the search.

Dyl said the report was apparently unfounded.

Game for something new in Kearny Rec

the upcoming fall and spring seasons — lacrosse and volleyball.

Now that he has finally landed someone to instruct/ coach girls in the sport, town Recreation Director Ralph

Cattafi said he’s ready to start recruiting participants for the department’s first-ever lacrosse program.

said he’ll ask his new staffer to handle both assignments.

His plan is to launch lacrosse in spring 2018 for grades 5 through 8 at Veteran’s Memorial Field along Belgrove Drive.

White lines were put down over a portion of the playing surface as a footprint for lacrosse back in March 2016 when the town made over the site with artificial turf and improved some of the playing spaces.

Cattafi has said he hopes to sign up, initially, 20 to 25 youngsters for the sport, which, he noted, is growing in popularity among the younger set.

He said he plans to start by offering instruction only and, after the youngsters gain enough confidence and skill in the game, expand to some level of competition.

He’s in the process of ordering equipment like lacrosse sticks, balls, helmets, gloves, shoulder and elbow pads and net.

Turns out Cattafi – who’d been searching all around New Jersey – didn’t have to go very far to turn up his new staffer. She’s right here in Kearny.

Laura Janousek, the new instructor/coach, has been a physical education teacher at Lincoln Middle School since September 2014.

She’s a graduate of Kean

University, where she was a “dual student-athlete,” as a member of the field hockey team and the women’s lacrosse team.

The latter experience, she noted, led to an opportunity to demonstrate her ability to impart knowledge of the sport to novices.

“During my senior year at Kean,” Janousek explained, “I was asked by the athletic director of Nottingham High School, in Hamilton Township, to be the first head coach of the girls’ lacrosse program for that school district.”

She went on to coach the junior varsity team at Nottingham for one year – which, she said, was the first year of the program – and the varsity team for two years.

Janousek also coached the girls’ lacrosse team for one year at Community Middle School in West Windsor.

At Lincoln Middle School in Kearny, she has been teaching swimming.

“Lacrosse has always been a passion of mine since I attended Kean University,” Janousek said. “I am looking forward to sharing that passion with the girls in Kearny.”

Then there’s volleyball.

Cattafi said he’s aiming to start that program sometime around Thanksgiving, also with boys and girls in grades 6-8.

“I’ve got four people interested in helping run the program in one of our elementary schools that has adequate space and I’m still ordering equipment,” he said.

NEWS IN BRIEF Grant will allow for 8 new firefighters HARRISON — She neither lives nor works in Harrison, yet Nancy Renzulli was recently accorded a hero’s welcome by the town’s elected officials.

That’s because the Berkeley Heights resident managed to persuade the federal government to part with $1.2 million for Harrison to hire eight new firefighters.

The grant covers a three-year period, after which the town will assume the full cost of salaries and benefits for those firefighters.

By resolution passed Oct. 3, the mayor and Town Council congratulated Renzulli for having “spent over 200 hours of her own time researching and drafting the [HFD’s] SAFER grant application” and for having “used the contacts that she has fostered in order to facilitate positive results.”

That night, the HFD feted Renzulli and her family by hosting a dinner in her honor at fire headquarters.

Harrison Fire Director Harold Stahl said Renzulli has a warm spot in her heart for

those serving in the public safety field. Renzulli’s son is a firefighter in Summit and she herself was a longtime school crossing guard in her former residence of Chatham.

“She seeks out fire departments that need help and offered her services as a volunteer grant writer so the town could apply for a SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Firefighter & Emergency Response) grant,” Stahl said.

Harrison was notified of having secured the grant earlier this year.

Stahl said the HFD has asked Civil Service to issue a certified list of candidates from which appointments can be made.

No pets for sale anymore in Kearny KEARNY — Another community in The Observer’s coverage area has prohibited retail sales of dogs and cats.

Following on the heels of the Township of Nutley, Kearny’s governing body voted Oct. 10 to adopt an ordinance stating, “No pet store shall sell, deliver, offer for sale, barter, auction, give away, or otherwise transfer or

dispose of cats or dogs.”

However, the ordinance does allow for such stores to partner with “animal care facilities, animal rescue organizations or reputable hobby breeders to offer space for such entities to showcase adoptable dogs and cats.”

The existing pet store in town can continue to operate so long as it continues “in compliance with all federal, state and local laws.”

Violators will be subject to fines of up to $500. The new law is to be enforced by employees of both the local health department and police department.

The legislation is designed to eliminate the stocking of pet stores with abused animals bred in puppy and kitten “mills” insufficiently regulated by federal, state and county laws and to reduce pet overpopulation as evidenced by the fact that more than 16,000 cats and dogs are euthanized annually in New

Jersey.

Councilwoman Susan McCurrie, who heads the council’s ordinance committee, said a pattern of mistreatment of animals by these mills has been well-documented.

“Those animals are likely to be born and raised in inhumane conditions,” she said.

McCurrie, who has fond childhood memories of “growing up with a dog and a cat,” said Kearny’s ordinance was patterned after a similar one adopted by Nutley earlier this year.

Someone across the Passaic dropped ball There’s no excuse why Gonzalez lay in a morgue for more than a week

By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com KEARNY — aving had the honor of sitting down with Kearny police Capts. Scott Macfie and Tim Wagner a little more than a week ago to discuss the circumstances surrounding the horrifying death of 14-year-old Angel Gonzalez, I thought this might be a good opportunity to share a few observations outside the facts and figures of the boy’s untimely passing.

There were a few things that were truly shocking — and perhaps even beyond human reasoning.

First, the notion that Gonzalez was found dead a day before he was even reported missing, by his parents, to the Kearny Police Department.

The actual report wasn’t shocking. The idea that KPD shared the details of Angel’s disappearance with all police departments in the state of New Jersey is, however. But the report itself isn’t the shocking part. It’s that despite the report being sent around the state the day after Angel was found, no one — not a single soul — at the Newark Police Department was able to put 1 and 1 together to discover Angel’s identity … for more than a week.

I don’t know how the NPD operates.

I’m not sure knowing would make a difference anyway. But here’s the bottom line in my mind.

When Angel was found, lifeless, outside Penn Station on Oct. 8, he was declared dead not too long after at a hospital. No one in the NPD thought, the day after, when the bulletin was sent across the state (by email), that the boy who was found a day earlier without identification could have been Angel.

Reportedly, when these kinds of alerts go out, they’re shown at roll call to cops on duty. At no point did anyone consider checking to see if the boy, found dead a day earlier, was the same clearly identified, via photo and description, boy who was in a morgue as a John Doe. It is obvious that often, the NPD has a lot of major crimes to deal with.

We get their press releases on a daily basis here at The Observer, and quite

frankly, no police department should have to deal with the volume of calls and crimes they do. I’ve given up on keeping a count of the homicides, some of which are in broad daylight.

But having a large workload is not an excuse here.

Numerous members of the KPD — some on their own (unpaid) time — spent hours crawling the streets of Kearny and Newark, with the hopes of finding Angel alive. We were told by the KPD that some of the Kearny guys actually met up with Newark officers and rode around there in NPD radio cars, searching high and dry for Angel.

While all of this was happening — and while there was hope Angel could still be found alive — he was in a morgue, unidentified, waiting to be claimed by his parents.

The KPD worked diligently to find Angel Gonzalez. They were often frustrated by the investigation and the inability to find him based on the reality that some of his so-called “friends” weren’t forthcoming. Perhaps they were scared. Perhaps they were just teenagers being teenagers. But this disgrace could have been avoided if someone across the Passaic River — just one person — didn’t drop the ball.

We can only hope something like this never happens again.

Making matters more maddening We were also told, by an extremely reliable source with knowledge of the

case, but who asked not to be identified, that prior to Angel being found lifeless, four other unidentified males had been with him, likely smoking synthetic marijuana. Or, as it’s commonly called, K-2.

The four other people — and Angel — were seen on a video provided to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, collapsing to the ground, one-by-one.

The other four, also one-by-one, got up from their drug-induced stupors.

All of them ultimately ran away. One even checked Angel’s pulse as he lay motionless outside a hotel near Newark Penn Station.

Yet not one called 911. Aside from the pulse-checker, not one did anything to determine whether Angel was OK. Instead, they all ran away, like the cowards that they are.

What’s maddening about all of this is that we’ll never know whether they could have helped him. Had one of them called police, could he have survived? What’s even worse — if any or all of the four are identified, chances are very strong they won’t be charged with any crime, because in this state, and far too many states in the country, there are no Good Samaritan laws that would require a human being to seek help for another human being in desperate need.

I hope it’s not just me, but I can’t comprehend this properly.

I was taught, at a very young age, that when you see someone in dis-

tress, you do something, you say something … you don’t just stand there uselessly … and you certainly don’t just run away. Don’t we so often hear, including on the very pages of this newspaper, that if you see something suspicious, like an unattended bag, you say something? Shouldn’t that very same credo apply to a human being?

Something’s got to change here.

That these four will never be held accountable for not helping their friend is disgusting. But they’ll have to live with themselves forever, knowing they didn’t help their dying friend.

And we can only hope these four are just the exception to the norm.

Because if they’re not the exception, our world is truly a mess.

Then again, it already is, isn’t it?

Rest in peace, young Angel.

Rest in peace.

Odds & ends • If you ever have to drive past the intersection of Forest St. and Seeley Ave., you really should do so with extreme — and I mean extreme — caution. That may very well be the most bizarre, and most dangerous, intersection in Kearny. Not sure what I mean?

Pass by one of these days. Do it slowly — and make sure you’re buckled up.

If it doesn’t jive after the first visit, it may never jive.

• Great job, as usual, by Kearny UEZ Director John Peneda, putting together the most recent PAWRade this past weekend (Saturday, Oct. 28.) That’s one event that truly has become a Kearny staple — and that often draws many people from out of the area.

While speaking to the two occupants, White detected a strong smell of raw marijuana coming from inside the car, police said.

Police said the male passenger — later identified as Alexander Hernandez, 26, of Belleville — was

removed from the vehicle to the sidewalk where he was confronted with the officer’s suspicions.

A pat-down of the passenger produced several cellular phones, more than $2,000 in cash and one Oxycodone pill, police said.

Police said the driver, Janetty Cordero, 24, also of Belleville, was also removed from the vehicle and reportedly admitted to having marijuana in a container in her

purse.

But that discovery turned out to be a mere pittance, compared to what came next as a further search of the vehicle’s interior turned up “four large laundry bags full of marijuana in numerous plastic sealed bags,” according to police.

LPD Det. Capt. John Valente elaborated: “The seized evidence was transported to the BCPO (Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office) Monday

morning (Oct. 23) where its official weight was determined to be 70 pounds” — the biggest such haul in recent memory.

Given the volume of the illegal grass, Valente quipped that investigators surmised that the stuff “wasn’t for personal use,” but declined to elaborate.

the cannabis has been known to sell for between $1,000 to $1,200 a pound.

So the entire load conceivably could have been “marketed” for “in excess of $70,000,” he said.

Both suspects were placed under arrest and booked at headquarters.

Hernandez and Cordero were each charged with possession of CDS (marijuana) with intent to distribute, along with possession with intent to distribute in a school zone.

Hernandez was additionally charged with possession of a prescription legend drug (Oxycodone) without a prescription and Cordero was also charged with possession of a prescription legend drug (Oxycontin) without a prescription.

Hernandez was transported to the Bergen County Jail where he was scheduled for a bail hearing Monday while Cordero was released on her own recognizance, pending a hearing.

Belleville boys’ soccer team captures SEC Colonial title

Laverde: Kearny’s new running sensation When Maria Laverde was growing up in Queens, N.Y., she always fancied herself as being a soccer player.

After all, it made a lot of sense, considering Laverde’s parents are from Colombia, which is almost like the soccer capital of South America.

Laverde was born in Colombia and came to the United States when she was just seven years old.

But last year, Laverde’s parents decided to move across the Hudson River to New Jersey, settling in Kearny.

“At first, I didn’t want to come,” Laverde said. “My family told me that it was going to be better for me, but I didn’t believe them.”

However, Laverde realized that she was moving to a town that has the distinct nickname of “Soccertown, USA,” thanks to its rich soccer history and being the hometown of soccer legends like John Harkes, Tony Meola and Tab Ramos.

“When I played soccer, I just ran all the time,” said Laverde, who was a forward in her soccer playing days. “I just ran with the ball or ran without it. I always liked running. I never knew how good I was.”

So when Laverde

enrolled at Kearny High School, soccer became a thing of the past.

“I wanted to try something new,” Laverde said.

“I was living in a new town, going to a new school. It was time for something new.”

Laverde then went to try out for the Kearny cross country team.

“She came out in the summer,” Kearny head coach Al Perez said. “She had mentioned that she had played some soccer before and after all, this is ‘Soccertown, USA,’ but after about three days, I knew she would be with the varsity. It was pretty evident right away that she had some ability and talent. She didn’t have a lot of experience.”

Perez knew that with a virtual newcomer, he had to treat Laverde with kid gloves.

“I had to be careful with her,” Perez said. “We had to let her come along gradually and develop.

She had to learn how to work out, how to practice properly. We didn’t want her to do too much too soon.”

But after a brief stint, Perez knew that Laverde’s progress was rapidly developing.

When Daniel Pinedo joined the boys’ soccer team at Belleville High School a little more than three years ago, the Buccaneers were struggling.

“We won two games when I was a freshman,” said Pinedo, now a senior. “We won six games, then five. I’ve seen a lot since I’ve been here.”

But before the 2017 season began, Pinedo saw some promise in the Buccaneers.

“I knew that this was going to be an exciting year,” Pinedo said. “It’s my senior year for one, but we all put in a lot of work in the offseason. We played a lot together. I saw the talent and saw what we were capable of. I knew that we were going to have a 100% turnaround.”

Pinedo now looks like a genius, because the Bucs have indeed done a complete 360-degree spin from a year ago. The Bucs currently own a 13-5-1 overall record, but more importantly, their 1-0 win over Newark Central last Saturday enabled the Bucs to clinch the Super Essex Conference-Colonial Division championship.

Freshman Kevin Riera scored the game’s lone goal with just two minutes left in regulation to seal the victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Fernando Pesantez collected 13 saves for the shutout in net.

“It feels great to be able to give this team what it needs,” Pesantez said. “We all leave it on the field and play like a family. Our hard work is now showing. I think a lot of people looked at us as underdogs, but we’re very confident. We’re excited to win this (the SEC Colonial title), but we have to keep our heads focused and give it our all. I think we really all expected a

Belleville head coach Gary Powelka also thought that his team would be vastly improved over a year ago.

“Our main goal was to get to perhaps nine or 10 wins,” Powelka said. “I think the key has been working with the younger kids and teaching them discipline. I’m absolutely pleased with what the kids have done this year. I’m sure they all wanted this badly.”

Powelka has watched the development of his younger players like Riera, the striker, who now has nine goals on the season.

“I knew the kid had it in

him,” Powelka said of Riera.

“It’s been a pleasure to watch him.”

Riera began the season on the freshman team, but he quickly moved up the ladder to become a key member of the varsity, after scoring five goals in two games with the freshman squad.

“I think everyone doubted me, but I knew I could do it,” Riera said. “It feels good to get a chance to play with the older guys right away. I know that if I make a mistake, I have to keep my head up and keep working. The older guys have See BELLEVILLE, next page

Halfway through Saturday’s race, Laverde found herself in front of the entire pack.

But not knowing the strategy of running the race, Laverde struggled a little on the hills and had to watch Senatus go past her.

“She went far past me,” Laverde said. “I tried to catch her, but couldn’t.”

Perez entered Laverde in an invitational cross country race at Darlington Park in Mahwah to start the season. She finished among the top five in the race. Laverde then raced in the highly competitive Passaic County Coaches Invitational at the Garret Mountain Reserve in Woodland Park on Oct. 1. Laverde finished 10th in the Varsity A race in 20:49.

“As the season went on, she just kept getting better and better,” Perez said. “She practices well and races well.

Laverde won the South Hudson championship last week at Bayonne County Park as a prelude to last Saturday’s

DiTonto was a starter for the Golden Bears since his freshman year. His goal production gradually increased in time and he became a consistent scorer and ball distributor for the Golden Bears, one of the best offensive players in the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference.

When DiTonto began his senior campaign in September, he was 23 goals shy of DeJesus’ career record.

“I knew what I needed,” DiTonto said.

As the season began to wind down, DiTonto’s chances of reaching the records became more difficult.

“I knew that the season was coming to an end,” DiTonto said. “I was going to try my best. My teammates were setting me up with some beautiful opportunities.”

But a lot of the record pursuit had to come from DiTonto himself.

“He knew that he was coming close to the record, but he said to me, ‘Let’s forget about all that and concentrate on winning games,’” Jelcic said.

DiTonto was also battling injuries to his ankles, his knee and his hip.

“He was pretty beat up,” Jelcic said. “But we gave him a few days off to recuperate, what we called maintenance days, and he came back refreshed. Frankly, he’s been going nuts.”

DiTonto has been on a goal-scoring tear over the last three weeks, scoring 19 goals in the Golden Bears’ last six games.

He scored one goal against the league’s top team, Harrison, then had three goals against New Milford and three against Secaucus in a wild contest that ended with Lyndhurst winning, 8-6.

The explosion gave DiTonto a seasonal total of 32, which tied DeJesus’ single season mark. In the process, DiTonto went past DeJesus to become the school’s all-time leading goal scorer in boys’ soccer with 68 career goals.

For his efforts, DiTonto has been selected as The Observer Athlete of the Week for the past week. DiTonto also was honored in September of 2016 as the Athlete of the Week.

Jelcic said that DiTonto has been borderline unconscious with his ability to score recently.

“He’s been taking shots that have been going in from everywhere,” Jelcic said.

“He’s been going nuts. He’s been really excited. I think he knows that the end of the road is near and he’s been loving every minute of it. He places the ball wherever he wants it. He’s been drilling shots left and right. And it’s all about perfection with him. If he scores three, he thinks he should have had six.

Added Jelcic, “No matter where he is, backwards, forwards, bicycle kicks, he’s been on a tear. He’s put the team on his back. It almost feels like he thinks he has to score every time he touches the ball. He has two, three people on him and he’s still fighting to score.

It’s been crazy.”

credit to his teammates.

“I have such good chemistry with my teammates,” DiTonto said. “I could have never come close to these records if not for them. I think this has all hit me all at once. I am a little surprised by it all. I didn’t realize what has happened.”

DiTonto said that he worked diligently with his teammates during the summer months to get ready for this season.

“We would get together with a group and go to the field just to play,” DiTonto said. “We went down to the field whenever we could. I think that helped play a role in this, especially with my teammates.”

DiTonto reluctantly admitted a sense of pride in achieving the records.

“I am proud, but the team helped me a lot,” DiTonto said.

While DiTonto has become one of the top goal scorers in Bergen County, he has yet to make a decision about his future. A few schools have shown interest, but amazingly, no true scholarship offers have been made.

“I am still looking around,”

DiTonto said. “I talked to some coaches, but nothing too serious. I definitely want to play in college. We’ll see what happens.”

“He doesn’t even want to talk about college,” Jelcic said.

“He wants to wait until it’s all over.”

The Golden Bears were scheduled to face Fort Lee in the opening round of the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group II playoffs Tuesday.

“He’s been extremely joyful to coach,” Jelcic said. “And it’s been great to watch him do

what he’s done.”

And now, some other young up-and-coming soccer player will look at the name of Vincent DiTonto on the walls of Lyndhurst High and want to erase DiTonto’s records.

“If you would have asked me four years ago if someone would come close to that record, I wouldn’t have believed it,” Jelcic said. “But Vincent has been the main centerpiece of this program. It’s been exciting to watch 22 other kids get so much better as players because of him.”

1 man saved from river, another still missing NEWARK – Two men went into the Passaic River this past Saturday, Oct. 21, but only one came out, and police continue to search for the missing man, authorities said.

Newark Police Capt.

Derek Glenn said, “Shortly before 2 p.m. [Oct. 21], a bystander flagged down Newark police officers and reported seeing two men entering the Passaic River.”

A published report said the incident happened

near Van Buren St. and Raymond Boulevard, where witnesses spotted two males jump into the river….”

A report from the Harrison Police Department placed the location as south of the Bridge St. Bridge.

Kearny Fire Chief Steven Dyl said the incident triggered a response by a regional fire boat rescue team comprised of boats from Newark, Kearny and Bayonne.

The Harrison Police

Department relayed a report from Newark indicating that two men were involved in some type of argument, resulting in one of the men jumping into the river.

As the other man reportedly tried to retrieve the jumper, he fell into the water, according to the report received by the HPD. The jumper was reportedly picked up by the Newark fire boat but the other man never resurfaced, the HPD said.

The baby was 20.5 inches and weighed in at 8 pounds. John Wolf Jr., chairman of the Columbus Baby committee, presented the baby’s mom a $100 Target gift certificate.

Addicts using pets to get narcotics

By Karen Zautyk kzautyk@theobserver.com The New Jersey Prescription Monitoring Program (NJPMP) is a centralized database for prescribers and pharmacists in New Jersey and partner states to track prescription sales of narcotic painkillers and other drugs that can lead to deadly heroin addiction. State law requires prescribers to review a patient’s prescription history prior to dispensing certain highly addictive controlled dangerous substances, including opioids.

Veterinarians, however, are exempt from this requirement.

Authorities say that drug abusers are now using their pets — and this gap in the law — to obtain prescriptions to feed their own habits. There are even reports of people deliberately injuring their pets in an effort to get the meds.

Last week, N.J. Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino and the Division of Consumer Affairs announced stricter guidelines for veterinary prescriptions to help prevent this from happening. The

initiative comes in response to reports that a growing number of addicts nationwide are abusing medications meant for their pets, including opioids like tramadol and oxycodone, which are commonly prescribed to humans and animals alike.

The new guidelines, created by the professional boards that oversee veterinarians and pharmacists, recommend including owner information as well as pet names on prescriptions to better track the sales on the NJPMP. The AG’s office noted that, while vets typically don’t dispense the types of pain meds — such as fentanyl and OxyContin — most often blamed for starting a generation of heroin users down the path to addiction, they do prescribe for animals other drugs commonly abused by humans. Among these are Xanax and Valium, tranquilizers used to treat separation anxiety and thunderstorm phobias in dogs; hydrocodone, to relieve pain and suppress coughs in pets, and tramadol, a powerful painkiller often prescribed for animals with

arthritis or other debilitating ailments.

“There appears to be a rising trend in people using their pets, sometimes even deliberately injuring their pets, to obtain these restricted pain medications for themselves,” said Sharon Joyce, acting director of Consumer Affairs. “The new standards make it easier to track CDS prescribed for animals to better identify behaviors that indicate someone is seeking the drugs for any purpose other than the treatment of a pet’s existing medical condition.

By creating stricter standards for the way pet prescriptions

are written, filled, and entered into the NJPMP, the database will become a more valuable tool for veterinarians and other prescribers to identify signs of possible medical diversion by pet owners, Porrino’s office said.

This month, the Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners sent letters to its 2,725 members, recommending that they record the following information on each prescription provided to owners to treat their animals: • The name of the animal, (its species), and the owner’s last name.

• The animal’s date of birth.

• The owner’s name.

• The owner’s address.

The Board of Pharmacy previously sent letters to its 16,884 members recommending that they place the same information on prescription labels and record it in the NJPMP. By including owner information on pet prescriptions, physicians doing look-ups on the NJPMP can see what kind of medications patients have been obtaining in their pet’s name as well as their own.

The letters also encourage veterinarians and pharmacists to access the NJPMP to report individuals they suspect may be seeking CDS for misuse, abuse or diversion.

The NJPMP now contains more than 77 million prescriptions written or filled in New Jersey. Each record contains the names and addresses of the patient, doctor and pharmacy; drug dispensing date; type and quantity of medication, and method of payment.

Overall, just 40% of the Kearny students district-wide who took the PARCC in the spring met or exceeded expectations in English Language Arts (ELA) while only 26% met or exceeded expectations in Math.

Fifty percent of fifth-graders met or exceeded expectations in ELA; in all other grades tested, the range was 22% (grade 11) to 49% (grade 3).

In Math, the results were much worse: Except for Lincoln Middle Schoolers, of whom 79% met or exceeded expectations in algebra, the best record was logged by third-graders, of whom 49% met or exceeded expectations, with the higher grades logging between 33% (grade 6) and as low as 8% (high school geometry).

Nonetheless, Encarnacao remains optimistic.

“I do believe we will continue to see an upward trend in our PARCC scores and that the increase will occur in all areas. • Knowing Science, a new K-grade 5 “handson, learning-by-doing” through experiments program founded by William Banko. “We’re currently piloting the program in grade 6 with two teachers,” Encarnacao said. “We’re the first district in Hudson County to be doing this.

Many schools in Bergen County have already introduced it and we’re excited about where we’re taking instruction.”

• Curriculum Coaches. Encarnacao said the district expanded the program this year, both by increasing from two to six coaches and from coverage in pre-K to grade 8 to include the high school. The coaches, former classroom teachers, are assigned to specific schools and subject areas.

Currently, she said, two are working with pre-K staff, two are with grades 3-5 staff and two are with grades 6-8 as well as grades 9-12 English and Math.

Scouts tour KPD headquarters KEARNY — Cub and Boy Scouts from Unit 305 joined with the Brownies, Juniors and Cadettes of Girl Scout Troop 12503 to tour the headquarters of the Kearny Police Department on Friday, Oct. 6.

Officers John Grimm and Steve Montanino, and Sgt. Adriano J. Marques, of the KPD’s Community Policing Unit, led the Scouts through the dispatch and records

rooms to show where calls are received, units deployed and evidence stored.

The Scouts viewed jail cells and toured the garage that houses the fleet of patrol cars, bicycles, motorcycle, and boat that help officers protect Kearny residents and keep the town safe.

This outing enabled Scouts to look at the computers inside patrol vehicles. They also learned that, in addi-

tion to helping people in our community, they also rescue lost pets and help reunite them with their owners.

The officers took questions from the Scouts and

encouraged them to do well in school and remain active in Scouting to prepare them for a potential future in law enforcement. At the close of the tour, Grimm promoted

each Scout to Junior Officer of the Kearny Police Department.

Belleville’s Veterans Day parade is Nov. 5 BELLEVILLE — Lt. Col. Jeffrey E. Ivey, garrison commander at the Picatinny Arsenal, will be the featured speaker at the Belleville Veterans Day Parade on Sunday, Nov. 5, parade organizer Bill Steimel announced.

Steimel said several military vehicles will participate, along with six bands from Belleville High, Kearny High, Central High, Malcolm X. Shabazz High and Barringer High, both of Newark, and Essex County Emerald Society; The Royal Regiment pipes and drum tribute band; and two floats, with one dedicated to Korean War veterans.
