Boy found dead in Newark day before report

Yet it still took more than a week after the boy’s death for Newark PD to positively identify Angel Gonzalez, who was a freshman at Kearny High School, according to reports.

In a press release issued Oct. 18, the NPD said Gonzalez was found shortly after 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 8, following a report of a “sick or

injured person near the rear of 1048 Raymond Boulevard.” The NPD said when officers arrived, EMS and NJ Transit police were already on scene, administering first aid.

The address 1048 Raymond Boulevard is listed as the Hilton Newark Penn Station.

KEARNY – It looks like Kearny’s top law enforcement official will be making an exit this year, but his employers certainly aren’t pushing him out the door.

Police Chief John P. Dowie, who has logged close to four decades of police service – nearly half of that time as chief – will have reached age 65 this year – which means he’s got to go.

Here’s why: N.J.S.A. Title 43:16A-5 says any member of the PFRS (Police & Firemen’s Retirement System) “who attains age 65 years shall be retired on a service retirement allowance … on the first day of the next calendar month ….”

Dowie, whose birthday falls around mid-November, therefore faces mandatory retirement Dec. 1, if the statute is to be literally interpreted.

When asked about the town’s transition plans for the police department’s leadership, however, municipal officials are mostly without a clue.

Third Ward Councilwoman Carol Jean Doyle, who serves as council president, said she’s unaware of anything set in motion around the impending vacancy.

Likewise, Fourth Ward Councilman Michael Landy, who heads the council’s Police Committee, said the subject of the chief’s status hasn’t come before the committee.

Robert Smith, the town’s business administrator, said: “I can confirm that New Jersey statute requires the retirement of the chief of police – and actually, all police officers [in the state pension system] – at age 65.”

Moreover, Smith added, “I have no reason to believe there will be any deviation from that statute.”

So when will Dowie be retiring and what will happen after that? Smith said he had no further information on the subject.

Mayor Alberto Santos said: “As far as I know, Chief Dowie has not yet applied for retirement nor announced a retirement date.”

Upon retirement, the mayor said, “the chief would be owed terminal leave payments. Since no retirement has been announced yet, that calculation has not been determined.”

‘The council and I have not yet determined how to proceed.’

— Mayor Alberto Santos Dowie, when asked about his exit strategy, said: “I’m in negotiations.” He said he couldn’t elaborate since it’s a personnel issue and, therefore, confidential.

Dowie did say, however, that since he became chief in 1998, he’s never had an employment contract with the town — but not for lack of trying. He said he made his case, initially, with Joseph D’Arco, the former town business administrator until 2010, and, after that, with D’Arco’s successor, Michael Martello, to no avail.

Santos was asked if the town plans to provide the chief additional compensation before his departure.

His reply: “With the last settlement of the Superior Officers contract, the differential in pay between chief and deputy chief narrowed significantly (the deputy chief is part of the Superior Officers contract; the chief is not). There have been discussions about addressing that through additional compensation to the chief but no final determination has been made on the amount. The differential issue arises irrespective of a retirement.”

Asked what the town has in the works for finding a replacement for the chief, Santos said: “The [Town] Council and I have not yet determined how to proceed regarding appointment of a new chief.”

The town has a single deputy police chief – George King – who, theoretically, could be the heir apparent to the chief’s job unless police captains are also deemed eligible to apply to state Civil Service to take an appointment exam, assuming the town asks for one.

Two years later, he got a job with the KPD. He was promoted up through the ranks, becoming chief in 1998.

According to data on file with the state Division of Pensions & Benefits, Department of the Treasury, as of June 30, Dowie’s pay is $200,808 a year and he would be eligible for an annual retirement pension of at least 50% of that amount.

Meanwhile, the Town of Harrison has asked Civil Service to schedule a promotional test for police chief, given that Chief Derek Kearns, 54, will be completing 30 years of police service this year and has publicly stated his intention to leave after achieving that milestone.

He has been chief for the last 12 years.

The HPD has no deputy chiefs or captains, but four of the HPD’s five police lieutenants have applied to take that test. The Observer has learned they are: Lts. Dean McGee, Ed Markowski, Derek McAlinden and David Strumolo.

Civil Service is expected to schedule the exam for some time in December.

August crash keeps Belleville Post Office closed BELLEVILLE – What’s up with the Belleville Post Office?

It’s been shuttered since the end of August, after a car smashed into the main entrance of the building on Washington Ave. near the Essex St. intersection.

That same day, a representative of the township construction official posted a “notice of unsafe structure” on the front of the building.

Plywood doors, secured by a padlock, cover the main access point to the building.

U.S. Postal Service spokesman George Flood told The Observer the facility is expected to re-open by sometime next month after repairs are completed.

In the interim, postal patrons are being referred to either of two area postal facilities — one in Nutley at 372 N. Franklin Ave. and another in Newark’s North Ward at 243 Broadway — for full services.

The Belleville postal annex at 525 Main St. continues to process postal box mail. The two window clerks assigned to the main post office have been temporarily shifted to the annex to sort box mail, Flood said.

Those who need stamps are advised to buy them through the USPS online service, Flood said. Or, they can get them at CVS or Walgreens, he said.

Meanwhile, the notice of unsafe structure (a copy was secured by The Observer from the township) advises of an “unsafe condition” prompted by “building damage from automobile collision.”

As a consequence, postal employee and customers must

“vacate the building — no individual is to occupy this building until the structure is rendered safe and sound.

“A design professional or structural engineer shall inspect the building and submit a signed & sealed inspection report. Submit permit applications and signed/sealed plans by a design professional for repairs. Obtain prior approvals, permits and required inspections for repairs. Obtain certificate of approval for occupancy prior to occupying building.”

The notice warns that, “Failure to correct the unsafe condition or refusal to comply with this order will result in this matter being forwarded to legal counsel for prosecution and assessment of penalties of up to $2,000 per week per violation.”

The notice is directed to Belleville Postal Realty LLC, c/o 780 Middle Country Rd., St. James, N.Y. According to Flood, that company is the owner of the building at 413-419 Washington which the USPS leases for its Belleville postal offices.

Flood said that under terms of the lease, the property owner is responsible for maintenance of the 6,115-square foot building.

“We have submitted construction plans to the township,” Flood said, to fix “structural damage.”

Flood said he was “optimistic that the [facility] will reopen in November before the holiday mailing season begins.”

According to a township police report, the mishap resulting in the building’s temporary

shutdown occurred Aug. 29 at 3:37 p.m. in the aftermath of a two-car crash.

One of the drivers, a 76-year-old man from Belleville, told police he was traveling north on Washington Ave. when a second car, which, police said, was operated by a

76-year-old township woman, “abruptly came out from a side street and struck his vehicle.”

The man told police the impact of the crash caused the northbound driver to run off the road westbound, jump the curb and strike the entrance of the post office, damaging the

KPD: You gotta have friends — but …

By Karen Zautyk kzautyk@theobserver.com KEARNY — At 2 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15, Officers Chris Manolis and Michael Gontarczuk were on patrol in South Kearny when they came upon a two-car accident at Rts. 1/9 and Jacobus Ave., where a 2014 Dodge had apparently rear-ended a 2017 Hyundai.

Police said the Dodge

driver — Erick Quiros, 20, of Bloomfield — appeared intoxicated, had slurred speech and lost his balance during field sobriety tests.

Also, they said, in the car cup holder was a plastic Minute Maid bottle containing, not juice, but some sort of boozy beverage.

After Quiros was arrested, a source told The Observer, “his two obnoxious passengers were offered medical aid and/or a ride from

the scene, which they very impolitely declined.” They were sent on their way, and Quiros was taken to KPD headquarters for an Alcotest and booking on charges of DWI, DWI with an open container of alcohol in the vehicle and careless driving.

He was then given the opportunity to call some responsible party to come and pick him up. Police said the “responsible party” he called turned out to be one

Police politely ran a warrant check, and Hester apparently had two — $500, MV offense, out of Haledon, and $212, contempt of court, Clifton. Those jurisdictions were notified he was in custody.

••• Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following: Oct. 13 Officer Jordenson Jean, on the 500 block of Kearny Ave. at 2 p.m., recognized Georganna Britting, 21, of Newark, confirmed that she had a $500 (full) harassmentcharge warrant from Kearny and arrested her on same.

Oct. 14 At 4:10 a.m., police said, Sgt. Jack Corbett and Officer Jason Rodrigues spotted a male and female sleeping in a Jeep in a secluded area of the Modell’s Passaic Ave. parking lot, recognized the man as former Kearny resident John Crawford, 36, now of Franklin, and arrested him on a $1,000 (full) DWI warrant from Pequannock. That township’s PD was notified.

••• Officer Derek Hemphill responded at 3:20 p.m. to Tappan St. and Davis Ave., where a 2004 Toyota had apparently hit a parked 2007 BMW. Standing outside the Toyota, and holding onto it for support, police

Oct. 18 At 1:40 p.m., Officers Alan Stickno and Kyle Plaugic received a report of a roadrage incident at the intersection of Rts. 1/9 and Hackensack Ave. in South Kearny.

There, they found a 52-yearold Harrison man, who reported an encounter with a rager who had left the scene in a 2015 Nissan.

Det. Daniel Esteves, on off-duty detail, spotted and stopped the car on the 300 block of Central Ave. When Stickno and Plaugic went there to get the Nissan driver’s side of the story, police said they found he had a suspended license.

Adrian Johnson, 29, of Pleasantville, was charged with DWS and failing to surrender a suspended license.

It is not known if he became enraged about that.

••• At 2 p.m., HQ received a call about a man chasing and possibly assaulting a woman near Schuyler Ave. and the Belleville Pike. Responding units interviewed a witness, who said both had headed west on the Pike and that the woman had been pushed to the ground. Officer Richard Carbone then found a 25-year-old Newark female who fit the victim’s description and had lacerations on her hand, consistent with a fall. Police said she was uncooperative, but the witness had also provided a description of the assailant.

Officer Jean spotted the suspect at the Pike and Grand Place, Capt. Tim Wagner and Officer Sean Wilson arrived as back-up, but the man — Jonathan Ramos, 27, of Newark — reportedly was also uncooperative. After a warrant check, he was arrested on two — both from Jersey City for contempt: $2,500 and $2,000 (both full).

Police said that despite the woman’s reluctance to cooperate, Ramos was also charged with simple assault — based on her injuries and witness corroboration.

With Lt. John Taylor as back-up, Jean began a field inquiry, which included asking the man — identified as Moses Williams, 52, of Newark — if he could provide the pass code to the computer. Police said the suspect, pointing up Belgrove, responded that he had just “found” the items.

By Karen Zautyk kzautyk@theobserver.com KEARNY – There are a couple of lessons to be learned from the following report: one, about the potential effectiveness of home security systems; two, about the apparent ineffectiveness of our legal system.

The story: At about 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 16, a Kearny woman was at work when she decided to check the security cameras in her home — cameras she could remotely monitor from her place of employment. What she saw inside her residence on the 500 block of Belgrove Drive was an intruder.

The woman called Kearny police, who immediately dispatched Capt.

John Gouveia, Sgt. Joseph Vulcano and Officers John Donovan, Malinda Esposito and Sean Kelly to the house, where they first checked the exterior and reportedly found an open window.

Police were also able to contact a relative of the resident, and he gave them access to the interior. During a room-by-room search, police

Gouveia, who had viewed the security footage, arrived and identified Williams as the intruder caught on the tape. A search incident to arrest reportedly revealed that, in addition to the laptop and the camera, he had a pocketful of gold jewelry: necklaces, bracelets and earrings.

Williams was taken to headquarters and booked on charges of burglary and theft.

Moses J. Williams said, evidence of a possible theft was found in a second-floor bedroom, where dresser drawers had been rummaged through.

The woman then relayed the earlier security-camera footage to the relative’s cell phone, and police were able to clearly see the suspect: a black male wearing a dark hat, a dark hooded sweatshirt and khaki pants.

A BOLO was issued, and a short time later, police said Officer Jordenson Jean saw a man fitting the description standing at a bus stop at Belgrove and Bergen Ave., with a gray laptop computer next

According to the KPD, this was Williams’ 30th arrest since 1983. Described as a “career burglar,” he reportedly has 16 felony convictions.

In May 2015, authorities said, he was sentenced to four years in prison in connection with a Hillside burglary -- his 29th arrest.

Earlier this year, he was paroled.

Gabert marks 25th anniversary as HCCC president

By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com It’s almost impossible to believe — Dr. Glen Gabert, president of Hudson County Community College, is in the midst of his 25th year as the school’s leader. Those 25 years get him the distinction as the longest-serving president in the college’s history and in the state of New Jersey.

HCCC Board of Trustees Chairman William J. Netchert, was quick to praise Gabert — a Kearny resident, by the way — for his quarter-century of service.

“Glen Gabert transformed Hudson County Community College from a deeply distressed entity to an institution of first choice for local residents seeking a higher education,” Netchert said. “Our board is proud of what we have achieved in working with Gabert — for the people of Hudson County and most especially, our students — it has been life-changing.”

When Gabert was installed in 1992, he was the fifth president or acting president to serve HCCC in just three years. The college experienced interventions by the New Jersey Secretary of Higher Education and Middle States.

The board of trustees had been asked to resign. There were discussions about dividing HCCC between two nearby county colleges — or closing it altogether. There was little confidence for HCCC within the institution and the community, and that manifested itself with a total enrollment of just over 3,000 students.

Under Gabert’s leadership, HCCC became an awardwinning institution that is student- and communitycentered, and focused on fostering understanding and attaining success.

A massive transformation With nearly 13,000 students, HCCC is now the largest of the four higher-education institutions in Hudson County.

In 1992, HCCC owned one facility — a classroom/office building with about 11,000 square-feet of space. During Gabert’s presidency, HCCC has raised more than $300 million for capital projects,

most of which helped contribute to the development of the Journal Square area.

HCCC now has two fully accredited campuses: Journal Square (Jersey City) Campus, with 13 HCCC-owned buildings and the 117,000-sq. ft., seven-story, stand-alone North Hudson Campus (Union City) building.

(A third campus is scheduled to open in Secaucus in 2018; and a new eight-story tower with student center and gym on the Journal Square campus will open in 2020.)

Bulwer-Lytton, a little late on ...

By Karen Zautyk S REGULAR READERS OF this column know, every year I rejoice in bringing you the winners of the annual Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest, sponsored by the English Department at San Jose (Calif.) State University.

The inspiration was Victorian author Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, who coined some literary gems, including “the pen is mightier than the sword.” Alas, today, thanks in part to the contest -- and to Snoopy -- he is best remembered for the opening line of his book “Paul Clifford”: “It was a dark and stormy night . . .”

The competition, running since 1982, “challenges entrants to compose the opening sentence to the worst of all possible novels.”

all 50 states. They require passing vehicles to move over one lane or slow down when approaching an incident where tow operators, police, firefighters and EMS techs are working.

According to recent polling by the National Safety Commission, more than 70% of Americans have not heard of the move over laws.

The Spirit Ride kicked off its nationwide tour June 1 in Haverhill, Mass., and made its way to Bergen County (Rutherford) last week. More than 5,000 tow trucks are participating in the ride that winds its way throughout the nation over the next eight months.

The procession of tow trucks and emergency vehicles relay a ceremonial casket, “Spirit,” to more than 250 cities and towns, from Boston and New York, to San Francisco and Seattle.

“Spirit,” an eight-foot long symbolic and empty casket, is painted with numerous scenarios of first responders at the scene of highway incidents, symbolizing those who’ve lost their lives in roadside accidents.

One of the men who lost his life as a tow operator was Mark A. Angelo, who for nearly a decade was an employee of Nick’s Towing, of Rutherford.

Nicholas Testa, the owner of Nick’s Towing, was responsible for bringing the Spirit Ride to Bergen County — and he did so to honor Angelo, who died six years ago.

“We remember and honor our fallen brother, Mark Angelo,” Testa wrote in a touching tribute. “He was tragically killed

in the early morning hours on Friday, Oct. 14, 2011. Mark was struck by a tractor trailer after loading a disabled vehicle on a ramp during a rain storm. Mark was a loyal employee of nearly 10 years.

“He loved helping others and was one of the kindest people you could ever meet. I can’t think of anything worse as an owner than losing one of your men and in this case, it is a man who holds a special place in my heart. There will never be another Mark.”

At the Bergen County event, first responders from various police departments were also on hand. Special songs dedicated to tow operators and first responders were sung. All who spoke did so with a singular message — if you’re driving on a highway, and you see a tow truck or first-responder vehicle — slow it down, move over, and pay attention to what you’re doing so no more lives are lost.

“Too many lives have been lost,” Testa said. “It is our hope that the message here is clear — motorists have to do their part to ensure no more lives are lost because people do not move over and do not slow it down.”

The Spirit Ride was founded

by American Towman Magazine and B/A Products and is a project of American Towman Spirit, Inc., a nonprofit corporation, born to promote highway safety.

Gonzalez was ultimately transported to University Hospital, Newark, where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival, according to the Newark PD. The Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, Newark, is performing an autopsy to determine the precise cause of Gonzalez’s death, though the NPD said there “is no evidence suggesting Gonzalez’s death is a homicide.”

The Newark PD were able to confirm Gonzalez’s identity by fingerprints on Oct. 17, nine days after he died.

The question remains, however, why it took a week-plus for Gonzalez to be identified. While his body was in a morgue for more than a week, detectives and officers from the Kearny Police Department continued to search for Gonzalez.

This included Capt. Scott Macfie, Det. Mark McCaffery and Sgt. Michael Gonzalez, who worked many hours, sometimes unpaid and on their own time, leading the search for the Kearny PD. According to Macfie, after the boy was reported missing, the KPD issued what’s called a TRAK Alert.

TRAK Alerts are sent, by email, to every police department in New Jersey — and are used to help identify missing persons, in addition to crimes of various natures. In this case, a clear, black-and-white photo of Gonzalez was prominently featured in the upper-right corner of the alert, which when printed, fits on 8.5 x 11 paper.

The alert included his age, 14; his gender; his height, 5-feet, 5-inches; his weight, 140 pounds; his eye color, brown; his hair color, black; his skin complexion, light brown; his race, Hispanic; his birthday, Nov. 22, 2002; and the last date anyone had contact with him, Oct. 8, 2017.

The description of his disappearance couldn’t have been more clear than it was — and indicated precisely where it was believed he was heading.

“Angel was reported missing by his mother on Oct. 9, 2017. He was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, with grey sweatpants and black Nike sneakers. Angel is believed to be in Newark (N.J.) or New York City (N.Y.C.) Any agency with information regarding Angel, contact the Kearny Police Department.”

So, while the alert clearly stated Angel may have been in Newark, it appears no one from Newark put one and one together. No one realized the boy police found Oct. 8 was, in fact,

Gonzalez.

According to a law enforcement officer with knowledge of the case, who asked not to be identified, Gonzalez’s TRAK Alert — and photo — were likely shown to many Newark cops, over several days, at roll call.

Additionally, Gonzalez’s disappearance was also entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database — a nationwide database. That entry, according to police, triggers a statewide teletype broadcast over the New Jersey Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (NJLETS).

Meanwhile, video that reportedly shows Gonzalez’s last moments alive had been been provided to the Kearny Police Department, which later turned it over to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

As of presstime, the precise cause of Gonzalez’s death has not yet been determined. Reports say, however, that Gonzalez likely ingested some sort of drug that took his life.

It may take up to 4 more weeks before toxicology reports become available.

While the case was quite challenging for all involved on the Kearny side, Chief John P. Dowie took time to explain the exhaustive work that many of his officers performed as part of the investigation.

“Angel was reported missing to us at 9:54 a.m. on 10/9 and by 10:10 a.m., he was entered into NCIC as a missing person,” Dowie wrote in an email to The Observer. “In other words, not only Newark, but the entire country was alerted that he was missing.

“From that point on, KPD launched an intensive search for Angel via friends, family, schools, allied lawenforcement agencies, hospitals, jails and morgues and anything else we could think of, up to and including my detectives pairing up with Newark police officers in cars and on foot in an effort to locate him.

“In point of fact, Capt. Macfie spent his time off last weekend consulting with members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s staff and enlisting their aid in our investigation. Numerous hours, both on duty and off, both compensated and uncompensated, were spent in furtherance of this investigation — and we dealt with people both cooperative and uncooperative in the matter, but never once got deterred or gave it (anything) but top priority. Bottom line is that Angel went unidentified in the morgue while we devoted every resource and hour we could to locating him.”

After Gonzalez was found, grief counselors were made available in Kearny schools — including at Kearny High School and Lincoln Middle School (where the young boy attended part of last academic year.)

The Lyndhurst High School girls’ cross country team created history in 2016 when the Golden Bears captured the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference-Colonial Division championship.

It was the first league championship for a Lyndhurst girls’ cross country team since 1987.

Since the Golden Bears won the league title once, there was a predominant feeling going into the 2017 campaign.

“Winning last year had a really big impact on us,” said senior Megan Rudden. “I think we all thought that if we won it last year, then why can’t we do it again? Coach P (head coach Michael Picardo) always tells us that the only thing that matters is what’s coming next.”

“Since we’re mostly all seniors, we wanted to make the most of this chance,” said fellow senior Kelly Weckstein. “We wanted to keep the level of success going.”

So last week, the Golden Bears took to the tough course at the Garret Mountain Reserve in Woodland Park and tried

to defend the conference crown they captured last season.

Sure enough, the Golden Bears held off a challenge from Garfield and Pompton Lakes to secure the second straight NJIC Colonial title.

“We wanted to keep it alive and keep it going,” Picardo said. “We wanted to keep everyone in the program and hope they develop into something special. That’s what happened.”

Picardo said that he believes his team realized something about a winning tradition.

“I do think they have some concept of tradition,” Picardo said. “They understand what was started last year and they all wanted to continue that. We knew that we had a very good team this year.”

Weckstein led the way for the Golden Bears, finishing fourth overall in 21:34.

“She’s the hardest working kid we’ve ever had,” Picardo said. “She’s an ‘everydayer.’ I use that term a lot and she’s the See VIEW, Page 15

By Jim Hague ogsmar@aol.com HARRISON – The clock was rapidly winding down in the Hudson County Boys’ Soccer Tournament championship game between Kearny and St. Peter’s Prep. After St. Peter’s scored a goal with just six minutes remaining to tie the score at 2-2, the match appeared to be headed toward extra sessions.

“I thought we were going to overtime,” said Kearny junior forward Ryan Silva. “It sure looked that way.”

But then miraculously, the Kardinals had one last chance, thanks to the alert play of Silva.

“I saw Juan (Rendon) get open,” Silva said. “He touched it forward to me and I was

right there. I knew I had to finish it.”

That’s exactly what Silva did. He buried the ball into the back of the net with just 35 seconds remaining, giving the Kardinals the thrilling 3-2 victory and the Hudson County title.

It marked the fifth time in the nine-year history of the county tourney that the Kardinals emerged victorious.

Silva has enjoyed a breakthrough season this year for the Kardinals, scoring 14 goals after tallying just two last year. But none were bigger than the game-winner Saturday at Harrison High.

“This is the happiest one, yeah,” Silva said. “I was in the right place at the right time.”

player who initiated the winning play at around the 40yard line, collecting the ball, then sending it forward to Rendon, who in turn touched it across the box to the streaking Silva, who scored for the fifth time in the last week.

The victory enabled the Kardinals to remain unbeaten at 14-0-2. The Kardinals were ranked No. 3 in New Jersey in last week’s NJ.com poll.

The win was the second straight come-from-behind victory for the Kards, who trailed St. Peter’s (13-4-1), 1-0 at halftime.

In the 44th minute, Kearny’s sensational do-everything Jose Escandon unleashed a bending rocket from about 35 yards out that Prep net minder Ulises Rodriguez never had a chance of stopping.

“I’ve had a lot of free kicks this year,” said Escandon, who now has 16 goals and 14 assists this season. “It’s one of my strengths. I had to be there to do something good for us. It was my best decision to strike that ball. I think it was the most important goal, because it helped us bring back our intensity and

helped us through the whole second half.”

“That was as good of a goal that you will see in high school soccer,” Galka said.

“That gave everyone a lift.

The Kardinals then took a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute, when Marcos Hidalgo scored off a scramble in front of the goal. For the longest time, it looked like Hidalgo’s goal would prove to be the gamewinner.

But then Jacob Brozon scored off a header for the Marauders, giving the match the look of extra time.

“We didn’t want that,” Galka said. “We were coming off an overtime game against Dickinson on Wednesday and another overtime game (a tie against St. Peter’s Prep) before that, so our legs were a little tired. We didn’t want it to go that way.”

Silva made sure that it didn’t happen.

Needless to say, the altercation between the two teams played heavily on the minds of the Kardinals, especially since they were the ones playing for their ninth straight Hudson County championship. Since the inception of the tourney, no other team in the county

has won the title other than Kearny.

“It was a little scary,” said senior midfielder Bre Costa.

“There was a bit of scariness in my gut.”

So for the first half hour, the Kardinals didn’t play with their usual fluidity and air of confidence. There was no score.

game to another Hudson County team. No one wanted that streak to end Saturday with another title on the line.

But talented sophomore striker Skyler Matusz put an end to all of the nervous angst and woes.

In the 31st minute, Matusz took a pass from Caitlin Mead and fired home a shot that found the back of the net.

“The defender hit my back heel and I thought I was going to lose the ball,” Matusz said.

“But once I got to it, I got the last touch.”

Five minutes after halftime, Matusz did it again, this time off a feed from Costa.

And for good measure, with five minutes left in regulation, Matusz added her third goal of the game, with Kelsey Santana collecting the assist.

The three-goal hat trick pushed Matusz’s amazing goal total to 37 for the season, just one shy of the school record set by Barbara Paiva in 2014.

More importantly, Matusz’s eruption enabled the county championship to remain in its rightful place, as the Kardinals (14-4) defeated the Bruins (105), 4-0, for the program’s ninth consecutive county crown.

While it might have been old hat for some of the players, like Costa, who won for the fourth straight year, it was all new for first-year head coach Stefanee Pace Kivlehan, who didn’t get the chance to play in a county tournament when she was an All-American player at Kearny High.

“When the season started, we had one goal in mind,” Kivlehan said. “We wanted to continue the winning tradition. If we just worried about that one goal, everything else would fall into place.”

“This was my first-ever county tournament,” said Kivlehan, who took over for Vin Almeida this season when Almeida was promoted to the athletic director position. “It’s definitely nice. It’s also a relief that it’s over. Now we can prepare for the state tournament and our next goal. They all really did a phenomenal job.”

“It’s pretty amazing,” Costa said. “To win this four years in a row is just amazing.”

Now, the Kardinals will prepare for the next obstacle, namely the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group IV state tournament. The ninth Hudson County Tournament trophy will find a nice spot with the eight others the Kards have collected since the tourney’s inception.

“I can’t wait to make it 10,” Matusz said. “That will be our goal next year.”

Catholic Cemeteries mark Month of Remembrance Each year, Catholic Cemeteries, a ministry of the Archdiocese of Newark, marks November as a month of Remembrance, with events to commemorate All Saints Day (Nov. 1), All Souls Day (Nov. 2) and Cemetery Sunday (Nov. 6). Observances include Masses, an inspirational concert, a symposium on coping with grief and a unique opportunity for the bereaved to personally express themselves in tribute to departed loved ones.

Masses of Remembrance at Catholic Cemeteries An integral aspect of the ministry of Catholic Cemeteries is to provide for the spiritual needs of its families. As part of this commitment, Remembrance Masses are celebrated on Memorial Day and throughout the year, typically the first Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday each month at its cemeteries.

During November’s Masses of Remembrance, special prayers and intentions will be shared to mark the observance of All Saints and All Souls days. Mass will be celebrated at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia (Nov. 3), Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover (Nov. 7), Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington (Nov. 8), Maryrest Cemetery in Mahwah (Nov. 8) and Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City (Nov. 9).

Bereavement presentation and concert in honor of the dead Each year, Catholic Cemeteries sponsors a concert in honor of the faithful departed on Cemetery Sunday (Nov. 5) at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. This year, the concert will feature the musical works of Dvorák, Mozart, Duruflé, Elgar, Barber and Flummerfelt.

The Cathedral Choir, organist Ian Tomesch and conductor John J. Miller, director of music ministries for the Archdiocese of Newark, present the concert beginning at 4 p.m.

This performance is intended to be a source of comfort and hope for those mourning the loss of a loved one. The church gathers not only to pray for the repose of their souls, but to console one another by strengthening hope and faith in the resurrection.

Upon arrival, guests may enroll names of de-

parted loved ones into a special Book of Remembrance. A free-will offering will be taken and advance tickets are not required.

Prior to the concert is a short symposium to the bereaved by the Office of Family Life of the Archdiocese of Newark. This year’s pre-concert lecture, “Using Music to Cope with Grief,” starts at 3:20 p.m., in the Cathedral Chapel of Our Lady of Grace of the Cathedral Basilica.

Ruth was born and raised in Jersey City. She moved to Kearny in 1974 before moving to North Arlington 25 years ago.

Mrs. Michaels was a bookkeeper for Santoro Lumber Company, Newark, for 20 years before retiring in 2000.

She was a member of the North Arlington Seniors

ty College in suburban Kansas City, Kan. Active in several professional and community organizations, Gabert is a past vice chairman and present member of the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Proud of his students Gabert, in an exclusive interview with The Observer, said he’s extremely proud that when students finish their time at HCCC, they leave with a clear conscience and without bills that would take years to pay down and pay off.

They know we always find a way — if a student wants to come here, money will never be a reason why not to do so.”

“This is where it all began,” Lucas said Friday morning, Oct. 20, hours before he was to be feted at a banquet at his college alma mater, where he starred as a quarterback from 1992 through 1995 before heading off to an eight-year career in the National Football League. “This is where I got my luck. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Although Lucas is busy these days as an analyst for the Big 10 Network, for Rutgers University football broadcasts and is a popular host on Jets Nation on SNY, he always finds a way to spend time with the students at his alma mater.

After all, Lucas and wife Cecy have raised their three daughters in Harrison. Two of those daughters are currently enrolled in the school.

“For me, I’m just home,” Lucas said. “This is my place, my town. My parents grew up here. I grew up here. My wife grew up here. My coaches are from here. It’s home.”

Lucas was greeted warmly by the students in attendance Friday. He was then headed to Rutgers for the Hall of Fame dinner, then was set to be introduced at halftime of the Rutgers-Purdue football game at High Point Solutions Stadium.

It was going to take some work for the 45-year-old Lucas to make it from all the way up in the press box down to the field in time for the presentation at halftime, but he guaranteed he would get there — even if he had to leave a few minutes early.

Lucas completed 56.6% of his passes for 5,896 yards and 43 touchdowns in his Rutgers career. He threw 16 touchdown passes in both his junior and senior seasons with the Scarlet Knights.

Lucas was not selected in the 1996 NFL Draft, but was signed as a free agent by the New England Patriots (coached by Bill Parcells) and went with the Patriots to the Super Bowl that season.

When Parcells decided to take the head coaching position with the New York Jets in 1997, the Hall of Fame coach brought Lucas along with him.

Lucas spent four seasons with the Jets and became the team’s starting quarterback when Vinny Testaverde went down with a season-ending Achilles tendon injury in the season opener in 1999.

Since he retired from pro football, Lucas first resided in southern New Jersey, then decided with his wife to return home to raise their family.

And since he’s been back, Lucas has made sure that the kids from Harrison were always high on his list.

“It’s important to me that the kids are here,” Lucas said.

“I sat where they sat. I have a responsibility to them. I always want to be around. It hurts me that I couldn’t be there more for the football team this year.

But I work seven days a week during the football season.

I would love to be here on a permanent basis. I want the kids to see me, see that I care.”

The student/athletes all appreciate Lucas’ contributions to the community. w“It gives us someone to look up to,” said senior two-sport sensation Dustin Huseinovic. “He’s someone who came up through the same system as us. It gives us hope.”

“Even in this small town, we have a chance to make it,” said Ray Chico. “He’s a symbol of someone who made it and he’s from our town.”

Mateo DeSosa is the current quarterback for the Blue Tide.

“I definitely look up to him,” DeSosa said. “He’s like us.

He’s proven that anything is possible.”

DeSosa said that he has seen some of Lucas’ highlight films from high school and college on YouTube.

“He was amazing,” DeSosa said. “It’s amazing to watch.”

Harrison High School Principal Matthew Weber realizes the importance of Lucas to his school and the community.

“It’s huge,” Weber said. “He’s the embodiment of all the hard work that we talk about. He’s always at our events. He had huge success, but managed to come home. It’s an honor to know him and work with

him on a regular basis. He’s a humble, ordinary guy. We’re all very proud of him.”

And to think that a kid from Harrison could actually be a member of the Rutgers Hall of Fame?

“It’s crazy,” said Weber, who was planning to go to the banquet and the football game.

“Because he’s always around, it’s almost uncanny to think he’s a Rutgers Hall of Famer.

Yes, he’s important, but he’s also our friend. I think that’s what makes it extra special for all of us. He’s not just a guy from Harrison. He’s one of us.

His daughters go here. We’re just happy to share this with Ray on his special day.”

Lucas was a little flabbergasted when asked about the induction into the Rutgers Hall of Fame.

“I mean, we started college football,” said Lucas, mentioning that Rutgers played Princeton in the first-ever college football game in 1869, a game Rutgers won, 6-4. “I don’t think that part has hit me yet. When they first told me I was getting in, I just thought it would be great for my girls when they have kids, then they can say that their grandfather did something special forever.

I am Rutgers. I’m a Jersey boy all the way through. I just wish that other Jersey boys decided to stay home like I did.”

Lucas already knows what his career would be if not for television and radio broadcasting.

“There would be nothing more rewarding to me than to be right here coaching these kids,” said Lucas, who was a volunteer assistant coach with the girls’ basketball team a few years ago. “I would be coaching here and nowhere else.”

Lucas provided a message to the youngsters in attendance.

“Dream the impossible dream,” Lucas said. “I wanted to put my town on the map.

I want you all to never forget where you came from.”
