FEDEX project in N.A. nears fruition

By Ron Leir rleir@theobserver.com NORTH ARLINGTON — It looks like all the pieces are rapidly coming together for the FedEx Freight distribution center project in North Arlington.

Last week, The Observer got a tour of the sprawling 44-acre project site

on Porete Ave. in the borough’s redevelopment area, just off the Belleville Turnpike (Rt. 7).

The visit was arranged by Robert Ceberio, the borough’s redevelopment consultant, and his business development director (and former North Arlington Mayor) Len Kaiser, who provided an escort.

Slated to open next month, much of

the 139,000 square foot FedEx distribution facility with 167 bay doors — occupying the old Bethlehem Steel property — looks to be close to completion, including a 23,000 squarefoot truck maintenance/repair center, 10,000 square-foot office building and surface parking for up to 215 workers and visitors.

North and west of the site, the de-

veloper is installing a storm management system with runoff basins and has elevated part of the land to raise it out of a flood plain.

By Ron Leir rleir@theobserver.com KEARNY — It won’t be the U.S. cavalry rushing to the rescue like in the Old West, but definitely expect to see uniformed personnel from the other side of the Passaic River.

That will likely be the response to Kearny residents’ complaints about loud music blaring from a location on Verona Ave. in Newark’s North Ward.

And even worse, that hard-driving club-type music — which, residents say, has persisted through the summer and now, into the fall season — is played into the wee hours, depriving adults and kids of slumber.

It makes it tough for folks who work the next day or for youngsters going to school.

About 50 long-suffering residents voiced their common concerns Oct. 2 at a Town Hall meeting convened by Mayor Alberto Santos to try and come up with a solution.

A representative from the Hudson Regional Health Commission — which is empowered to monitor noise regulations — said the agency is hampered in this case because it has no jurisdiction in Essex County.

Moreover, as noted last week by HRHC Executive Director Carrie Nawrocki in a phone interview, “the state noise code only allows certain categories of property to be enforced,” and, because the property at 9 Verona Ave. has reportedly been taken over by the city of Newark in a tax foreclosure action, it is classified as “abandoned” and, therefore, exempt from noise enforcement.

Additionally, Nawrocki said, on the basis of police investigation, the noise “seems to be originating from mobile speakers” set up at the Verona Ave. site, and that’s not enforceable, either.

Still, Nawrocki said, the HRHC plans to “set up a modified noise investigation” by sending an investigator during “off-hours” to measure noise levels at Kearny locations.

Those readings, she said, will be furnished to the appropriate law enforcement agencies to reinforce any public

nuisance complaints they may bring against the offenders.

“It’s really a police matter,” Nawrocki said.

For the record, state regulations limit enforceable noise levels to no more than 50 decibels between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. and 65 decibels from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., according to HRHC Deputy Director Angelina Dequina.

Council President Carol Jean Doyle credited Santos with “setting up a plan going forward” by putting key Newark officials on record about the situation and getting a list of their emails so they can be alerted to any future incidents.

In a Sept. 26 letter to Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and City Council members Anibal Ramos and Luis Quintana, Santos wrote, “As far as we can tell, the noise comes from an open area of a vacant industrial property [at] 9 Verona

Ave., where cars assemble and play music on speakers late into the early morning hours on most nights.

“The most recent noise complaints I received were on Saturday, Sept. 23, informing me that the noise continued non-stop through 2 a.m. Sunday, Sept.

24.”

Santos said the Kearny Health Department and the HRHC “are trying to work with their counterparts in Newark and Essex County to address our concerns.”

Kearny Police Chief John Dowie told The Observer the KPD, on a late Saturday night near the end of August, “sent a couple of cars over” to the Newark site where officers “found vehicles at the extreme east end of Verona Ave. off Rt. 21.”

NEWS IN BRIEF New lights for the park?

WEST HUDSON — Before Hudson County undertakes a facelift to a portion of West Hudson Park, straddling Harrison and Kearny, it’s seeking further enlightenment on a particular aspect of the project.

Lights, that is.

A public notice issued by the county Department of Parks and Community Services, Division of Parks, advises that a “stakeholders meeting” has been slated for Wednesday, Oct. 11, “to discuss athletic field improvements” at the park.

Those improvements “include a new turf field, bathroom facility, workout stations and sports lighting.”

And, to the point, “The focus of the meeting will be the impact of sports lighting on the surrounding community.”

Hudson County Freeholder Albert Cifelli, chairman of the contracts review committee, who lives in Kearny and practices law in Harrison, said he’s familiar with the situation.

Cifelli said there’s a concern that the placement of lights to

illuminate playing areas may interfere with some Kearny residents along the west side of Dukes St., going up the hill, along with others on the east side whose back yards abut the field.

“We’ll see what the engineers say,” the freeholder said.

The recreational grass space targeted for the turfing project takes up an area Cifelli estimated at about 450-feet-by-600-feet, mostly within Harrison’s borders, used by youths and adults for softball, baseball, soccer and cricket.

Although the freeholders have yet to solicit bids for the proposed improvements — which, Cifelli said, could run in the range of $4 million — the hope is that can be done and a contract or contracts awarded before the winter sets in, he added.

Exactly how the county plans to finance the job also has yet to be determined.

Michael Ascolese, chief of the county parks division, could not be reached for comment.

convened at 6:30 p.m. at the LCC, 6 Davis Ave., Kearny.

Kearny Superfund site to be remediated by feds

KEARNY — Despite President Trump’s pledge earlier this year to substantially cut this year’s $1 billion budget for Superfund sites, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says it’s still committed to moving forward to clean up one such site in Kearny.

In an Oct. 3 press release, the EPA said it has finalized a $24 million plan to remediate contaminated soil and sediment at the 30-acre former Diamond Head Oil Refinery in the Kearny meadows.

Between 1946 and 1979,

the plant reprocessed waste oil and, during its operation, stored, discharged and leaked PCBs, dioxin, volatile organic compounds and other toxins into adjacent properties, including a wetland area known as “Oil Lake,” just to its south.

In the ‘70s, the state Department of Environmental Protection removed more than 10 million gallons of oil and oil waste and more than 230,000 cubic yards of oily sludge from site. The plant was dismantled in the ‘80s.

In 2002, the EPA added the site to its Superfund list.

A new cleanup plan, revised since the original 2009 plan, calls for an initial phase of excavation and disposal of 49,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil near the “Oil Lake” and refilling that area with clean soil at a projected cost of $14 million.

As part of a second phase dealing with other compromised areas, EPA plans to “excavate and remove 2 feet of contaminated soil and then cover the remaining contamination at the site with two feet of clean fill. Wetland areas would also be excavated to a depth of two feet to accommodate the soil cover.

By Karen Zautyk kzautyk@theobserver.com KEARNY — Have you ever met a bearded dragon? We encountered one for the very first time Saturday morning on Belgrove Drive and instantly fell in love. We would get one of our own, except we would want it to be a free-range dragon, at least indoors, and we don’t think

the cats could adjust.

This dragon’s name was Odi, and he was among the critters who gathered with their human caretakers (don’t say “owners”) for the annual Blessing of the Animals in honor of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and the environment.

The ceremony took place on the front lawn at the

Archdiocesan Youth Retreat Center (formerly Boystown) and was conducted by the Rev. Msgr. John J. Gilchrist, with the assistance of Sister Doris DeLotto.

The service began with a reading from the Book of Genesis about God’s creating the animals — and the birds and fish, et al — and continued with a series of beautiful prayers.

And this, which nearly broke our heart: “On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can’t

We have attended this particular program several times and are always struck by how the animals -- the majority being canines, some barkingly rambunctious -- tend to go quiet

when they are gathered in a semi-circle in front of the St. Francis statue for the actual blessing. (Although, one or two are a bit surprised when they get sprinkled with holy water. The bearded dragon didn’t seem to mind, though.)

And then it was over.

And all the animals, some cradled in their humans’

arms, headed homeward.

To, we are certain, happy homes. For those humans, those stewards, who cared enough to bring their pets to the blessing must truly love them.

My personal prayer is that every animal might find such love, or at least be protected from cruelty and hate.

$68M school question up for vote

By Ron Leir rleir@theobserver.com NUTLEY — As township residents plunge into what will be the last two weeks of Christmas shopping, the Nutley Board of Education hopes local public schools will be on their gift list.

On Dec. 12, local property owners will be asked to interrupt their holiday reverie to go to the polls (not the North Pole) and vote on a crucial public question.

Should the Nutley Board of Education be authorized to spend $68 million for the following:

“(To) provide for the construction of additions, renovations, alterations and improvements at John H. Walker Middle School, Nutley High School, Washington Elementary School and Yantacaw Elementary School, including acquisition and installation of furnishings, fixtures, equipment and site work.”

The Nutley BOE voted unanimously on Sept. 25 to submit the question for consideration by township residents at a special election slated for the second Tuesday in December.

A simple majority of those voting will decide one way or the other.

Local school officials, led by BOE President Daniel Carnicella and Schools Superintendent Julie Glazer, have strongly promoted the proposed blueprint aimed at bolstering the physical plant and reconfiguring space at four of the district’s seven schools.

A profile of the district posted on its website notes that, “Many of these schools were constructed by the beginning of the 20th century and they have been refurbished by referendums in 2002, 2004 and 2006, totaling [by coincidence] $68 million.”

Actually, the total cost of improvements as proposed by

the public question is projected at $70.4 million but, because the district, according to the BOE’s professionals, is providing $2.4 million from capital reserve to complete some of the work, the “total cost to bond” comes out to $68 million.

Here is a summary of what the proposed $68 million bonding project will accomplish, school by school: • John H. Walker Middle School (currently serving grades 7 and 8), $36.7 million to provide 20 new classrooms (to help absorb incoming sixth-graders), cafeteria and service kitchen, bathrooms, secure entrance and reconfigure of office wing and built-in fixtures and loose furniture.

• Yantacaw School (serving K to grade 6), $14.5 million to provide six new classrooms and remove existing trailer classrooms, a multi-purpose room, bathrooms, relocate main office and secure entrance and built-in fixtures.

• Washington School (serving K to grade 6), $9.6 million

to provide 3-story addition of six classrooms and eliminate trailers, a multi-purpose room, bathrooms, elevator and built-in fixtures and loose furniture.

• Nutley High School (serving grades 9 to 12), $9.58 million to provide additional physical education/multi-purpose space, renovate media center/TV studio space to create four additional classrooms and common learning areas, a new media center to include TV studio and builtin fixtures.

Each cost projection includes “fees for architect, engineer, survey, construction manager, permits and 10% set aside for contingencies,” according to the BOE. KHS field house dedicated in Cali’s memory In life, John F. Cali Jr. was known for his quiet generosity. As the Kearny High School Athletic Hall of Fame Association wrote, he was “in every sense a true philanthropist to the Kearny community and its youth.”

But he never demanded recognition. He did it all for the betterment of the people — and the kids — of Kearny, not for his own ego, not for getting his photo in the newspaper, not so that the entire world knew what he did.

So in its own way, it seems fitting that now that he’s gone from this world, the Hall of Fame Association named the Kearny High School south

Cali was instrumental in preparing the high school

stadium when the original turf field was installed. He and his brother-in-law Andy Fiore gave their time and talent in helping to remove soil from the old field, the grading of the surface and laying drainage stone.

They used their own equipment.

Their employees were part of the process.

And it all goes so far beyond this, the association says.

The Kearny High School Sept. 11 memorial, on the King St. side of the field, is there because of Cali. It was he who worked to erect the monument for KHS.

Cali was a huge supporter of the Kearny Football Booster Club. He supported Little League baseball, rec softball, soccer wrestling and football.

Festivals were fun, as was KFD open house S

By Kevin Canessa o much has happened over the last few weeks locally that I thought I would recap a few of the local events that had a great impact. We’ll start with two anniversaries that were marked a few weekends ago — Lyndhurst’s 100th and Kearny’s 150th.

In both towns, there was a committee that planned the anniversary celebrations that happened in Lyndhurst Sept.

30 and Kearny Oct. 1. Both committees put on tremendous shows. I was fortunate to have covered both — and each was incredible.

Congratulations to both Lyndhurst and Kearny on

their anniversaries. Well done.

A weekend before, it was Harrison Fest. Councilman Anselmo Millan, Monica Miguens, John Pinho worked countless hours to put on an amazing weekend — and their hard work showed.

We are very fortunate to have had three spectacular events within a few miles of each other in the past few weekends — and I certainly hope you enjoyed them as much as I did.

Odds & ends • Kearny’s Chief Fire Inspector Juan Barroso Jr. hosted the Kearny Fire Department’s annual open house

this past weekend. Tons of families with kids showed up, despite what seemed like it could be stormy weather (it never opened up, thankfully.)

Many were able to use a KPD hose, and some took part in a smoke simulator. There was also an extrication drill and a sprinkler demonstration.

Many of the rigs were available for the kids to “tour” and sit in — including Marine 3, the department’s fireboat.

It was another extremely successful event for Barroso and for many of the other KFD personnel who were on hand to help, from cadets who are in the fire academy, to firefighters, to Deputy Chief Frank Viscuso, to Capt.

Joe Mastandrea to many others.

When the KFD puts on a show — they do it in grand style. Nicely done, Juan and co.

• Mother Mary Tortoreti, who since 2002 was the matriarch of The Observer, and who died Dec. 21 last year, would have turned 75 on Sept. 28. So many times, I think of Mary — and miss her. She was one of the most unique human beings I’ve ever known. It was very difficult to not be able to pick up the phone to call her on her birthday.

So many times, it seems like she sends us signs, whether it’s in a song (for

me, it’s “Cherry Cherry” by Neil Diamond) or something that happens in the office.

Miss you, Mare. It hasn’t been the same without you.

We miss you more than words can say.

• I love the fall. It’s always been my favorite season of the year. But this fall has been beyond strange. October, so far, has seemed more like August — while August, for the most part, seemed more like October. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had enough of the temperatures being in the 80s. I’m ready for a cool-down.

Tiny Calvary United unpacks huge mission “With God All Things Are Possible,” and Calvary United Methodist Church of Kearny, with a membership of only 10 parishioners, though small in number, is a vibrant missional church in the community.

For over 40 years, it has an annual week-long vacation bible school, which is free to all children in the Kearny and neighboring towns. It also hosts an annual church picnic in September open to the entire community.

The church also gave birth, over 15 years ago, to the “Back Pack” and “Outside of Church Sunday School” ministries.

LaRie Malley and her sister Patricia Worley (now deceased) – longtime mem-

bers of Calvary – teamed up with Pastor Benjamin Moore, who they described as a “Pastor of the Streets.”

He told them of the needs in the Crescent Lanes on Union Ave. in Irvington.

So it was decided to bring Sunday School to the children twice a month in the area with singing, Bible stories, arts and crafts, prizes for memory verses with lunch included. After this spark was lit, a need to help in other ways prompted them.

The “Back Pack” ministry started with 20 bags filled with school supplies. This year, those 20 bags have multiplied to over 130 bags, with donations from Berea Baptist Church of Kearny

And, the chief said, “the sounds project right across the [Passaic] River with

no barriers.” Washington Ave. residents seem to be getting much of the brunt of it. But folks on surrounding blocks are also hearing it.

Unfortunately, Dowie said, “we don’t have enforcement powers” in Newark and the NPD have their hands full.

“In all honesty,” the chief said, “we’ve gotten a better response from the Essex County Sheriff. They’ve had complaints about this group in the past.” They get chased but when officers

leave, they return, he said.

“If you don’t keep pressure on them, they’re going to keep coming back.”

Doyle, a S. Midland Ave. resident, said the music “woke me up at 11:30 last Friday (Sept. 29) night. It was a nightmare.”

“I don’t get why [Newark PD] can’t ticket them for noise nuisance, disrupting the public,” the Kearny lawmaker wondered. “Nobody wants to be bothered 24/7 by a party you weren’t invited to.”

other that will permit other Porete Ave. businesses to enter and leave via the Pike.

That will be accomplished by construction — now underway — of a new signaled intersection facing NewRent trailor sales, rentals and repairs at 520 Belleville Turnpike.

Truck traffic currently going in and out of the borough’s industrial area relies on a tricky access point via Porete, just below Schuyler Ave., on a hill that makes for poor visibility and tough maneuvering in and out of often-heavy Pike traffic.

Under the new setup, Langan Engineering, representing the developer, and engineers for the state Department of Transportation, are reviewing two scenarios for traffic traveling eastbound on the Pike looking to turn into the site, Kaiser said.

One possibility, he said, would allow for left turns into the site via a jughandle extending across the Pike into part of the trailer business property; another calls for turns via a dedicated left-turn lane keyed to a timed traffic signal.

“Either way,” Kaiser said, “it will be a safe passage.”

Westbound traffic on the Pike will turn right to access the site, he said.

Outbound traffic exiting onto the Pike will be able to turn right or left, Kaiser said.

The cost of the intersection improvements – projected at $3 million – will be borne by the developer, Porete Development LLC and principal Moishe Mana, who is leasing the project site to FedEx. Once the new intersection

configuration is in place, according to Ceberio, use of the old Porete access road would be limited to “emergency purposes.”

Turns out, Ceberio said, the borough has never made that roadway a “dedicated street,” largely because it follows the right-of-way for a Jersey City water line that snakes through the meadows area, including part of what is now the FedEx property.

And now that the site is being redeveloped — with additional roadways and intersection improvements threatening to impinge on that line — Ceberio said engineers from the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority – which controls the city’s potable water flow from Morris County reservoirs – insisted on protections for the nowvulnerable water line.

To that end, Ceberio said, part of the new intersection improvements includes a relocation and reinforcement of the line, plus construction of bridge decking, supported by 20- to 25-feet-deep wooden pilings, to rise over the water line to cushion the pipes from pounding of truck traffic and to prevent any possible breaks in the line.

All of this disruption will likely compel PSE&G to move at least five of their utility poles now aligned with the Pike, Ceberio said.

At full build-out, the project is expected to generate about 150 jobs with more to come later.

The FedEx project should be followed by more redevelopment activities in the Porete Ave. area, Ceberio said.

Clayton Block, a masonry manufacturer and a fixture on Porete, and Home Dynamix, a floor covering distributor and relative newcomer to the area, will stay in place, he said.

KPD: Suspect bolts but gets nailed

By Karen Zautyk Observer Correspondent KEARNY – t 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1, Officer David Bush was on patrol at Chestnut St. and Oakwood Ave. when he saw a young man — later identified as Marvin Hanson, 18, of Newark -- apparently trying to enter a parked, locked car.

When Bush exited his radio car, police said Hanson took off, running south on Chestnut, and then jumping on a skateboard. A foot pursuit ensued, despite the officer’s orders to halt.

Said pursuit continued along Chestnut to Quincy Ave., west on Quincy to Kearny Ave., and south on Kearny past Grove St., Liberty St. and Halstead St., where Bush closed the distance and transferred Hanson from the skateboard to the ground. Although Officers Jason Rodrigues and Sean Podolski and KPD Chief John Dowie had arrived on the scene, the suspect reportedly continued to refuse to comply with orders, but was finally subdued, placed in a patrol car and taken to headquarters.

(In case you are wondering why Bush ran after Hanson instead of chasing him in his radio car, the reason is that would have given the suspect a chance to escape into the backyards and disappear. Bush needed eyes on him the entire distance.)

Hanson was charged with criminal attempted burglary, resisting arrest and obstructing the administration of law.

Position change leads to scoring explosion

Lyndhurst girls have nothing to be ashamed of with loss in Bergen tourney Kim Hykey is such a competitive person that she simply does not like to lose. That’s going back to her playing days at Lyndhurst High School and her career at Seton Hall University. Losing was not a word that Hykey liked to digest.

“I always want to win,” said Hykey, now the long-time girls’ soccer coach at her high school alma mater. “I never think we’re going to lose.”

Hykey was even taking the high road Sunday, when her Golden Bears were traveling north to Ramapo and face the No. 8 team in the state. Lyndhurst might have been a gigantic underdog, but Hykey was not putting on the face of a loser.

“We were going there to win the game,” Hykey said.

Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. The powerful Green Raiders scored twice in the second half to come away with a 2-0 victory over the upstart Golden Bears.

“We held them scoreless until 13 minutes were left,” Hykey said. “(Goalkeeper Isabella) Izzy (Castagnetti) made two saves that were awesome

saves that kept us in it.

She made an amazing diving save that pushed the ball off the crossbar and another outstanding kick save. They really didn’t have many chances. We played a nice game of soccer. I’m really not overly disappointed.”

Nor is Hykey upset with the way her team has been playing. The loss to Ramapo dropped the Golden Bears’ record to 10-2 overall with the two losses coming at the hands of state-ranked teams Morris Catholic and Ramapo.

“If you would have told me in June that we’d have this record at this point, I definitely would have been surprised,” Hykey said. “But during the summer, I saw the talent that we had, especially with the freshmen coming in.”

One of the most promising freshmen has been midfielder Kaydee Yallo, who has scored eight goals and added five assists.

“Everyone knew she was good,” Hykey said of Yallo. “She has been playing club soccer with PDA (the prestigious see VIEW page

F

or the first two years of his high school soccer career, Omar Sowe was a standout as a defender, the last line of the Harrison High School defense before the goalkeeper. Sowe was establishing himself as a center back, a lockdown defensive wizard.

But in his mind, Sowe always thought he had a chance to be an offensive performer.

“I feel my position is more of an attacking player,” Sowe said. “I like to score goals. It’s natural for me.”

After the Blue Tide lost to Newark East Side in Red Bull Arena early in the season, veteran head coach Mike Rusek decided that he had to make a change.

“John (Rusek, Mike’s brother and long-time assistant) and I went back and forth with it,” Rusek said. “John and I have always been offensive coaches. My father (assistant coach Mickey) always said that defense wins championships, but we want to score goals. So we decided to give it a try and move Omar to midfield.”

No one could have ever dreamed what the move would mean, because Sowe has been totally unconscious as a scoring machine for the Blue Tide.

Over the last four games, all victories, Sowe has scored 10 goals and added six assists.

He registered the three-goal hat trick twice in that span against Lyndhurst and Bergen Charter. He has scored at least two goals in seven games

and now has a total of 19 goals and 15 assists for the 10-1 Blue Tide.

“I never could have imagined how it turned out,” Rusek said. “He’s having a great season.”

“I’m excited about it,” Sowe said. “This is great. I love it. For me, I always think of myself as an attacking player.

It’s a better position for me.

I have some great players around me and it’s great playing with them. We all play together and know what each other is trying to do.”

Rusek knew that Sowe had goal scoring potential.

“He scored 13 goals as a freshman,” Rusek said. “We put him where we had a necessity. He wasn’t happy playing defense, but we needed see SOWE next page

him on offense and we’re happy. The kids we put back there have also adapted. We’ve only given up one goal in the last five games.”

Rusek likes the way Sowe plays as a midfielder.

“We’ve had good offensive players in the past who were good with the ball, that were smooth and slick,” Rusek said.

“But Omar is so different. He’s so powerful. You see other defenders backing off him. Omar has also had kids hanging on him and he’s still dribbling the ball through. He can shoot with either foot. Both are effective shots. He’s a midfielder at heart who likes to distribute the ball. He’ll take five or 10 shots, but he’d like to dish off for an assist as well.”

Rusek believes Sowe has a chance to be one of the alltime greats – and that includes his older brother Modou, the former All-American at Harrison who was the New Jersey Player of the Year when he

was a senior in 2013. Modou Sowe is currently playing for Rowan University.

“Modou had a great junior and senior year for us,” Rusek said. “We’re hoping we can say the same thing with Omar.

Right now, he’s the main engine for us. He’s the one who gets us going and the rest are following real nicely.”

Omar Sowe said that he has always looked up to his older brother.

“He’s my inspiration,” Sowe said. “He’s everything I’ve ever wanted to be in a soccer player. He’s my role model. I hope to be like him some day.”

Sowe likes the way he’s playing right now for the Blue Tide, who own a 10-1 record and will begin play in the Hudson County Tournament Thursday against a team to be determined, more than likely North Bergen at Harrison High.

“I’m playing with a lot of confidence,” Sowe said.

“We’re having a great season so far. This is awesome, the

quality about Sowe.

“He wants to win,” Rusek said. “He’s one of those players who will do whatever we need to do to win. And he’s going to find a way to do it.

Right now, he’s been involved in two-thirds of all of our goals. He’s been carrying the team offensively. So he’s the one who will get us where we want to go.”

Sowe would love to play college soccer when he graduates from Harrison.

“I would love to play in college,” Sowe said. “It would be amazing to be part of that.”

Sowe has someone who admires his play, namely his little brother, Mustapha, who is a freshman with the Blue Tide.

“I know he looks up to me,” Sowe said of his little brother.

She had a hat trick in her first varsity game, so that helped her confidence a lot.”

Yallo has fit in nicely with returning veterans Giulia Pezzolla and Mia Luna.

“I think the others are feeding off Kaydee and that also helps confidence,” Hykey said.

“I think Kaydee has brought Giulia’s level up and she’s playing better. Giulia’s trying things she wouldn’t have tried last year. I don’t know if she did it consciously or it just happened, but Giulia is also now a better player.”

Pezzolla, now a junior, is off to another fine season, collecting eight goals and 11 assists.

The third top scorer is senior forward Luna, who has six goals and eight assists.

“Mia is a free spirit who doesn’t let anything bother her,” Hykey said. “Mia is just being Mia.” Hykey had an idea that the three young ladies would play well together.

“In the summer league, they really started to jell together,” Hykey said. “They hadn’t played together before, but I’m excited to watch the three of them together now. If you stop one, you still have the other two to contend with. Hopefully, that continues.”

Castagnetti, the junior who has already committed to the College of Holy Cross when she graduates from Lyndhurst in June 2019, has been sensational in goal.

“When we played Morris Catholic, we didn’t stick to our style of play and that hurt us,” Hykey said. “We did stick to it against Ramapo and that’s the first big step in my mind. I do think this game will help us.”

Overall, at 10-2 and in control of the league, Hykey can’t ask for more.

“Yes, I’m definitely pleased with the way we’ve been playing and what we’ve been able to do,” Hykey said. “At 10-2, it’s a great record, for sure.”

Kearny has Silva in golden year thus far for Kardinals

R

yan Silva was a little hesitant about a position change.

After all, the Kearny High School soccer standout was entrenched as a midfielder for the Kardinals, a playmaker first and not much of a goal scorer.

But the Kardinals had a glut of midfielders to begin this season and head coach Bill Galka looked at Silva as a possibility to move to the forward line.

“He had been moving back and forth,” Galka said.

“Where we needed him this

season was up front and he seemed to be excellent up there. He’s a technical player and he’s much stronger than he was last year. He holds the ball well. It was an experiment at first.”

Silva decided to do what was best for the Kardinals.

“I had to do my job,” Silva said. “I know it’s not my natural position, but we play as a team. Passing and moving the ball is what I like to do. I’m not generally a goal scorer. I still had to play my hardest, no matter what position I was playing.

I still play hard and play as a team. The move was not for me, but it was more for the

team.”

Galka had an idea that Silva would be able to handle the transition.

“I know that he plays soccer all year round,” Galka said. “I know he went to Portugal over the summer and played every day over there. He was fast when he came back and stepped right in and was effective right away. His technique was always good. I didn’t know if he could score goals.”

Galka knows now.

Silva, now a junior, had three-goal hat tricks in recent wins against Hudson Catholic and Union City, both in the span of six days.

Galka is very impressed with his new striker’s production.

“He’s been able to finish off some good plays,” Galka said.

“We’re certainly happy with that. I think the team now realizes that he can score goals and they are letting him create plays on his own. He has scored goals with both feet. Inside the box, he’s a presence. He has good size and he’s stronger and more physical than most players.”

Galka believes that Silva’s production has enabled him

to utilize other key components, like the team’s leading scorer, Jose Escandon, who has tallied 12 goals and added 10 assists this season.

“We’ve been able to move some people around,” Galka said. “Depending on the game and the score, we put other people in different position. We have a lot of guys who are midfielders/ forwards. We’re trying to take advantage of what we have. That’s what we’re doing with Ryan. He knows what he’s doing. He’s a smart player. He’s good with the ball and he’s quick enough to get to the ball. He’s very

versatile. He can play different positions, but right now, we’re comfortable with him up top.”

Silva is somewhat shocked at his goal production.

“I’m a little surprised, because last year, I had only two all year,” Silva said. “I’m surprised I could score a lot of goals. I just have to keep it going. The season is far from over. But now, I definitely have the mindset that I can score. I have to pressure more and keep making moves toward the goal. I’m always looking for the ball and thinking about scoring.”

“It was an experiment,” Galka said. “He said, ‘I’ll give it a go,’ and it’s worked out very well. I’m pleasantly surprised. I always knew he was a good player. I thought he would be a strong player for us in the midfield. You just never know.”

“I’m a little surprised, but not that much,” Silva said.

“I knew that I could handle it. Sometimes, I have a bad game, but we all lift each other up. I’m happy with the results right now.”

AVASCULAR NECROSIS

Avascular necrosis, also called osteonecrosis, is the death of bone tissue due to an interruption of the supply of blood to the bone.

Healthy people have very little chance of developing this deteriorating condition. Most of the people at risk are younger than 60 but older than 20. About 20 percent of the time, avascular necrosis occurs when the femur (the thighbone) has been broken. For reasons not yet completely understood, the long-term use of corticosteroids for inflammation has been known to result in the condition. Other health conditions such as HIV, sickle cell disease, or pancreatitis can cause this type of necrosis. In addition, drinking too much alcohol can lead to avascular necrosis.

“Approximately 440 cubic yards of contaminated soil containing PCBs, dioxins and other contaminants, and 800 cubic yards of contaminated sediment would be removed under this plan and transported to facilities licensed to receive the waste. The cost of this stage of the cleanup is estimated at $10 million.

“Contaminated groundwater will be addressed by EPA in a future cleanup proposal.”

The EPA did not say when the first two phases of its cleanup project for the site would begin or whether the $24 million has been earmarked for the work.

Don’t fall for this utility scam

NUTLEY — There was a PSE&G phone call scam circulating throughout local businesses last week, Nutley police report — and if it is happening here, it is likely to happen elsewhere in The Observer’s circulation area.

Police say a caller claims to be from the utility and (this is particularly worrisome) may actually have your PSE&G account number. The caller warns that your service will be shut off, sometimes within 30 minutes, unless you make an immediate payment via Money Gram. However, authorities note that PSE&G does not request Money Gram payments.

If you receive such a call, hang up and contact PSE&G directly to check on your account. Be sure to call the number on your PSE&G bill, not the one that showed up on your phone when you received the warning.

3 babies die in 40 hours

Following the deaths of three infants — in Belleville, East Orange and Newark — over a 40-hour period Sept.

23-26, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is asking parents to take precautions to avoid such tragedies.

“We are awaiting final autopsy results in each case to determine the cause and manner of death, but given what we know right now, we are urging parents to take simple steps to protect their children,” Acting Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino said last week.

• Make sure the baby is sleeping on his or her back and sleeping alone.

• Keep blankets, stuffed animals and other items away from the sleeping area.

• Make sure the baby is on a firm surface.

• Bring the baby into your bedroom, but not into your bed.

• Parents should avoid sleeping with very young children and make sure they have cribs or bassinets.

“Babies who sleep in the bed with the parents are at increased risk for SIDS — Sudden Infant Death Syndrome … suffocation or strangulation.

Parents or siblings may accidentally roll over on the baby,” Laurino said.

The prosecutor emphasized that the three incidents do not appear to be criminal and that the infants apparently were not the victims of trauma.

The Belleville death appears to be a medical incident, he said.

“We further want to remind parents that there are resources in the community to obtain cribs and bassinets which are designed for young infants,” he said.

NUTLEY — Police Director Alphonse Petracco and Chief Thomas Strumolo are again warning residents to lock their car doors. In the past month, Strumolo reports, there has been a spike in unlawful entry into and thefts from unlocked vehicles, with the latest incidents occurring in the early morning hours (Monday into Tuesday) on Rutgers Place, Wharton Ave., Kingsland St., North Road and River Road.

At 5:45 p.m., police reported, Officer Malinda Esposito was driving west on the Belleville Pike near the N.J. Turnpike overpass when her patrol car, and the rest of the rush-hour traffic, were passed by a 2016 Honda speeding along the right shoulder. Police said it then cut across the road into oncoming traffic, where Esposito managed to bring it to a stop and persuade driver Linda Smith, 52, of Secaucus, to turn off the engine and hand over the keys. Asked where she was coming from, Smith reportedly replied, “The bar.”

With back-up Officer Jose Canela, FSTs were conducted and Smith was arrested for alleged DWI. Put in the

patrol car, police said, Smith attempted to kick out the windows and, en route to HQ , began banging her head and face against the front/ back seat partition.

At headquarters, police said, it took several officers to remove her from the car, and, once out, she spit on Esposito. Smith was taken to the cell block, but when her handcuffs were removed, she allegedly tried to bite Officers Tim Castle and Jose Perez.

Smith was charged with: DWI; refusing an Alcotest; having an open container of alcohol (a bottle of Budweiser) in a motor vehicle; careless driving; improper passing; unsafe lane change; failure to wear a seat belt -- and “throwing bodily fluids at a law enforcement officer.”

She was 80.

Born in Kentucky, she lived many years in Kearny before moving to Newton in 1977.

Arrangements were by the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny.

Visiting and a Mass of Christian Burial took place Wednesday, Oct. 5, at The Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church, Andover. Cremation was private.

Sally held a master’s degree in library science and retired as librarian of the former Upsala College. She volunteered for many years for Meals on Wheels and was active with Friend to Friend, a group of compassionate citizens who give their time visiting and assisting people who are often alone and usually housebound. She had also volunteered at the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, where she ultimately received amazing care during her last days.

Sally is survived by her devoted husband Jim Capobianco; her loving children Jim (and Holly), John (and Corenne), Nancy (and Tony Colon) and Guy (and Melissa). The sister of Bygee Guttierez and George Blakey, she is also survived by her cherished grandchildren Andrew, Skyler, Linnea and Colin.

During her career, Bessie had been a loan department manager for First Fidelity Bank. She loved bowling, her trips to A.C. and taking her grandchildren on shopping sprees. She adored her children and grandchildren and her door was always open to their friends. She enjoyed collecting angels and even named her beloved dog, Angel.

The wife of the late Dan Sofman, she is survived by her children Stephen Sofman (Liz), Mark Sofman and Krissy Angelo (Jerry). The sister of Mary Ann Chippendale, she is also survived by her grandchildren Justin, Jason, Kaylee, Cassie and Nicholas.

HCCC sets lecture series lineup Hudson County Community College (HCCC) has announced the lineup for its 2017-2018 Lecture Series.

The featured lecturers include animatronics engineering expert and former host of Discovery’s “MythBusters,” Grant Imahara; ABC News Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent and co-anchor of “This Week,” Martha Raddatz; and actor and activist BD Wong.

The lectures take place at the college’s Culinary Conference Center, 161 Newkirk St., Jersey City — just two blocks from the Journal Square Transportation Center. All are open to the general public and there is no charge for admission.

Roland was born and raised in Scarborough, Maine, the youngest of nine children and the son of a lobster fisherman and homemaker. He moved to Harrison after he completed several enlistments in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1971.

He worked as a security guard for Bear Sterns Financial Corp, Whippany, retiring in 1997. Prior to that, he worked with security for Worthington Pump, Harrison, and prior to that, he worked as a maintenance man for Westinghouse, Newark.

Roland served his country in the United States Marine Corps as a gunnery sergeant (GYSGT). He served three tours during the Vietnam War and prior to that, two tours during the Korean War. He was a Bronze Star Recipient as well as many other service commendations.

During his multiple enlistments, he often found himself engaged in many combat missions. He served his country proudly and honorably.

An avid philatelist, he was a Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion and Marine Corps League.

The first lecture on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 11 a.m., features Imahara, who was also a modelmaker and animatronics engineer at George Lucas’s Industrial Light and Magic. While there, he worked in special effects on eleven feature films — “Star Wars,” Episodes 1 to 3, “Artificial Intelligence: AI” and “The Lost World: Jurassic Park.”

Raddatz will appear in the second segment of the series Thursday, March 8, at 6 p.m.

Raddatz served as ABC News’ Chief White House Corre-

spondent during the second term of President George W. Bush’s administration and received Peabody and Emmy awards for her coverage of presidential campaigns and the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The final lecture, slated for Thursday, April 5, at 6 p.m., features BD Wong, the award-winning actor who has appeared on “Law & Order: SVU,” “Oz,” “Mr. Robot,” “Gotham, “Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic World.”

Wong also appeared in the Broadway production of “M. Butterfly,” for which he earned a Tony Award, Theatre World Award, Clarence Derwent Award and Drama Desk Award.

Predeceased by his wife Cecilia (nee Hull) (2000), Roland is survived by his loving sons Roland P. and wife MaryAnne Collins and Steven G.; and his cherished grandchildren Kristin R. and Roland N. Collins.

He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. All nine of his siblings predeceased him.

His life passion was basketball, whether playing at St. Michael’s or Montclair State University. Dennis eventually entered coaching as an assistant at Montclair State, and then accepted the head coaching position at Snyder High School, Jersey City.

He was named Coach of the Year in 1967 and lead Snyder High School to the South Hudson title.

Years later, Dennis moved on to coaching the girls basketball team, including his daughter Kelly-Anne, at Our Lady of Czestochowa. He became an assistant coach of the girl’s basketball team at Ferris High School for over 20 years.

Dennis loved basketball and inspired generations of children to test their abilities and achieve their very best efforts.

Dennis E. Woods Sr. was one of the greatest basketball minds of his generation.

Predeceased by his wife Lorraine (nee Raibick) (2011), Dennis is survived by his children Dennis E. Woods Jr. and Kelly-Anne Nigro (Joseph); his cherished grandchildren Isabella, Ian and Valentina Woods and Gianna, Sophia and Joey Nigro. He is also survived by his siblings Maureen (Alan) Bracchi and Brian (Caroline) Woods.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 115 S. Third St., Harrison, N.J. 07029, to the attention of the Rev. Paul Molewski, in loving memory of Dennis E Woods Sr.

The funeral will be conducted from the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave., Harrison, on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 9:15 a.m. A funeral Mass will follow at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, Harrison, at 10 a.m. Friends may call on Tuesday, Oct. 10, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday after 8:45 a.m. His entombment will take place at Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum, North Arlington.

He attended St. Michael’s High School in Union City, and later graduated from Montclair State University. Dennis married Lorraine Woods in 1967 and eventually moved to Harrison. He worked concurrently as a deputy warden for the Hudson County Department of Corrections and as a social worker for the Jersey City Public Schools. Dennis was a parishioner and usher at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, Harrison.
