f there’s such a thing as a weather god, it really did a great job this past weekend.

That’s because the temperatures and atmosphere couldn’t have been better as the Township of Lyndhurst marked its 100th anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 30, and as the Town of Kearny marked its 150th anniversary on Sunday, Oct. 1.

Both towns’ anniversary celebrations had incredible turnouts — thousands ventured to both.

If you happened to be in the vicinity of Laurel (a/k/a Snake) Hill Park in Secaucus a couple of weeks ago, you might have caught sight of a pack of pirates harvesting fish from the Hackensack River. Fear not. You were not caught in a time warp.

On Saturday, Sept. 23, the Hackensack Riverkeeper, Capt. Bill Sheehan, sponsored his second annual Pirates of the Hackensack RiverFest — a catch-and-release fishing derby to celebrate the continuing comeback of the formerly poisonously polluted waterway. Participants — kids and adults — were encouraged to dress like pirates. Not just for fun, but as a tribute to local history.

There was a time — a long, long time ago — when pirates reportedly made their home in what is now called the Meadowlands. When we first heard the story, we had visions of tall-masted galleons flying the Jolly Roger, but these images have been dispelled. Our local pirates more likely sailed around in rowboats, canoes and skiffs.

Back in the day, the 1700s, the meadows were covered with a thick forest of cedar trees: Excellent for pirate hiding places; not so hospitable to galleons.

Besides, our “buccaneers” weren’t sailing very far anyway. They were river pirates who raided ships in Newark Bay, New York Harbor and along the Hudson River.

According to author Robert Sullivan’s book “The Meadowlands” (Scribner, 1998), the pirates “would plunder boats in New York Harbor, race to the spit of land that separates the harbor and Newark Bay (and today is Bayonne),” abandon one boat, run over a hill, jump into another and escape into the cedar swamps.

To this day, there is talk of pirate treasure being buried somewhere in the meadows, but personally I wouldn’t go looking. What these pirates most likely plundered were food and whale oil and whiskey and animal pelts. You might

call them scavengers.

Scott Anderson, of the Lyndhurst Historical Society, calls them “people of opportunity.”

In his 1927 book “The Gangs of New York” — upon which the 2002 movie was (very loosely) based — author Herbert Asbury writes of late 19th century river pirates selling their plunder to the junkmen. Gold bars and pieces of eight do not go to junkmen. But who knows? Maybe the 1700s pirates had richer pickings.

And there are tales of even the later pirates sometimes grabbing strongboxes and other valuables.

The heyday of the local pirates, though, was the 18th century. Sullivan (who has a marvelous sense of humor) writes that those “pirates are the first instance of organized crime in the Meadowlands.” And apparently they thrived — or at least became enough of a nuisance that reportedly, sometime in the 1790s, authorities set fire to the cedar forest to drive the pirates out once and for all.

Sullivan writes: “It is said that this fire burned the meadows from Point-NoPoint [a spit of land under where the Pulaski Skyway is now] all the way north to Little Ferry. … It burned for three days and destroyed everything …”

Some historians dispute the story — but something destroyed the cedar forest.

Evidence of its existence remains — in a multitude of cedar stumps through-

out the Meadowlands. You can see them, for instance, at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst and behind the Mill Creek Mall in Secaucus.

Jim Wright, who was a communications officer for the former N.J. Meadowlands Commission, wrote of the fire in his 2012 book “The Nature of the Meadowlands,” but in conversation he also blamed the cedar-forest decimation on “a bad case of the shingles.” Early settlers found the wood to be perfect construction material for roofing.

The cedar trees were also used to construct roadways, including the original Belleville Pike and the aptly named Paterson Plank Road.

But it’s not just the forest’s demise that’s debatable. Historians disagree on the factuality of the Meadowlands pirates, too. Apparently, some are true believers; some say it’s simply legend.

Even Sullivan, who devotes a whole chapter to them, emphasizes that “today … the [Meadowland] pirate stories are considered to be apocryphal.”

River pirates did raid N.Y. Harbor ships, but whether any made their homes in the Meadows apparently has been neither proven nor suitably documented.

So far.

Your correspondent prefers to believe.

Legends are romantic.

And maybe there is treasure out there in the swamps, but don’t go hunting for it. Too dangerous. (Although, you just might find Jimmy Hoffa.)

Collection drive afoot to aid Puerto Rico

BELLEVILLE — Local volunteers are organizing a collection drive to help victims of the catastrophic storms that have left much of Puerto Rico without water, food and power.

“In a goodwill effort to help and support the families of Puerto Rico, whose lives have been affected due to the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria, we have joined forces to organize a benefit in Belleville,” says a flier circulating within the township.

Spearheading the campaign are Carlos Marzan, who runs an accounting/tax prep business on Joralemon Ave.; former Belleville resident Freddy Calvache; Tom Grolimond, a member of the Belleville school board; Councilman Kevin Kennedy; and Billy Coutts, who printed the fliers.

Members of the public are invited to bring emergency and construction supplies — while will be shipped to the stricken island — to the

Belleville American Legion Post 105, 621 Washington Ave., on Oct. 20, between 4 and 10 p.m.

A 20-foot container with chassis furnished by Trademark Waste Solutions of Nutley will be placed on site and donations will be loaded inside.

Refreshments and entertainment will be provided.

The supplies will be driven to Newark Airport and flown to the island for distribution.

Marzan told The Observer he plans to fly to the island where, with the help of a distributor tracking the shipment, “I’ll make sure it gets to the people who need it.”

It would be premature to send out anything now, Marzan said last Thursday, because the island infrastructure isn’t yet fully capable of transporting supplies throughout the island, particularly the more remote areas.

Poplaski is Optimists’ Cop of the Year

For Kearny Police Officer Richard Poplaski Jr., who’s been on the force for around two years, that’s an understatement — and one of the reason he was chosen to be

thereafter and joined Montanino, Det. Sgt. Mike Gonzalez, Dets. Mike Andrews, John Fabula and Dan Esteves.

“With smoke billowing from the home and windows blowing out, the officers, concerned for possible trapped residents, attempted entry with Officer Poplaski forcing the front door open,” Police Chief John Dowie told The Observer. “It should be noted that upon the initial arrival of Officer Montanino, he had observed a 22-yearold male resident assisting a 19-year-old female resident off of a porch roof with a ladder.

“As the officers were addressing the evacuation situation, the fire department arrived and assumed responsibility for firefighting and rescue duties and the officers pulled back.”

This served as yet another reminder to Dowie, the Kearny chief of police for the last 19 years, just how much of a gem he has in the young police officer.

“I’ve known Rick for a long time and before he went to the academy, I asked him, like I do all my recruits, to think about what you’re getting into,” Dowie said. “Are you going to be able to deal with the gruesomeness of the job? Can you deal with fatal accident scenes? Shootings?

You have to be composed to do what you have to do.

And you’re not going to be just the first responder — you’re going to be the only responder.

“When you get there first, it will take your best John Wayne for a while.”

But it didn’t take Dowie long to know — the junior Poplaski had all of what it takes to be a good cop. A great cop, actually.

“Ricky is my son’s age,” Dowie said, referring to Kearny Police Officer Jonathan Dowie. “His grandfather was a great detective. His dad is on the job. He comes from a long succession of Kearny police officers. He was an EMT in West Milford.

He’s a volunteer firefighter.

He’s been there, done that.

He’s an Eagle Scout.

“He really knows what he’s doing. He’s the whole package.”

Just nine days after completing his field training — nine days — he had his first life-saving experience. That was April 2016.

A few months later, when a man was found down at Kearny Ave. and Boyd St., he saved the man with CPR. That very same day, a halfhour later, Poplaski saved a 5-day-old choking baby.

You read that right — a 5-day-old, alive today, because of Poplaski — 30 minutes after he saved someone else.

Is the picture getting clearer?

Dowie says that of the 28,000 or so jobs the KPD responded to in 2016, about 36 were deemed noteworthy for consideration by the Valor Committee. Of those 36, 14 were rejected and 22 remained. Four awards were given to Poplaski.

LaFiamma celebrates 12 years in Harrison

By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com HARRISON — It’s hard to believe that on Nov. 5, it will have been a dozen years since LaFiamma opened its doors, replacing what had then been a legendary eatery in Cifelli’s.

But it’s true.

LaFiamma, legendary now in its own right, under the direction of owner Angelo Freire, is preparing to celebrate its 12th anniversary.

And in those 12 years, it’s gone from being a nice New York-style Italian restaurant with New Jersey prices to a place that still lives by that moniker, but that is also a place you may just find a star or two enjoying a meal.

“We’ve had a lot of celebrities in the restaurant over the last few years,” Freire said. “We’ve had Gov. (Chris) Christie, Jon Bon Jovi, (U.S.) Sen. (Robert) Menendez, Sen. Nick Sacco and Bill Bellamy the comedian among others.”

Freire says Sacco told him he’d heard LaFiamma was “the best restaurant around,” Bon Jovi has come in with his wife and the outgoing governor has come in “often.”

“They really do love it here,” Freire said. “They know that when they come here, they’re going to get excellent food at great prices, and they can say they have a place of their own to visit when they come to Harrison.”

When Freire first took over for Cifelli’s (Cifelli’s was always packed to the gills, especially on Friday nights)

it wasn’t easy. But slowly, things started to pick up.

So to what does Freire attribute that?

“Well, we knew Harrison was growing,” he said.

“Whether it was the Red Bulls coming to Harrison, or the Prudential Center, people would come here, before or after events, and they knew they had a quiet, classy place.

Our regular clientele grew, and then through word of mouth, people told others this was a place that had a great type of food at very affordable prices.

“People knew they didn’t have to go to the city to have food you’d get in the city.”

The success of LaFiamma is also attributable, Freire says, to the consistency of the food and the way it is prepared and served.

“Over the years, everything we serve is fresh, whether it’s the pasta, the vegetables … so people have come to know they can count on us,” Freire said. “They knew the sauces are very good. And it’s been our goal, from the beginning to have 100% satisfaction for our clientele.”

We can attest to this.

Back when LaFiamma first opened, we reviewed the restaurant and loved it from the beginning.

Nearly 12 years later, that consistency Freire speaks of is evident.

Whether it’s the pasta fagioli, the salads, the pasta, the meats — you name it — the food has always had a tremendous taste and everything is just as we recall it from those early years.

What’s more, even though

LaFiamma has a huge menu, Freire still believes this — if it’s not on the menu and they have the ingredients, they’ll make it for you.

For yours truly, that involves a salad on the restau-

rant’s original menu called mozzarella in calera. It’s mozzarella cheese wrapped in prosciutto, with a light char-grilled flavor, served with salad greens and a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. It

was magnificent back then — and still is today.

Longo no longer on Belleville council

He says he’s a casualty of sniping and snooping by people out to nail him.

Be that as it may, his colleagues on the Belleville Township Council voted unanimously to remove him

from office by vacating his seat, as proposed by Councilman-at-large Kevin Kennedy.

For the past few months, Longo has participated in council sessions remotely through a special phone connection – a procedure the governing body sanctioned by ordinance this past spring.

For the past couple of weeks, rumors had swirled around the Municipal Build-

ing that Longo – who was elected to a 3-year term as an at-large council member in the 2014 municipal election – would be resigning.

On Sept.

19, the Township Clerk’s office received a letter dated Sept. 5 Longo from Longo informing the Clerk, Kelly Cavanaugh, “As you are aware my employer has reassigned me to South Florida. I have decided to accept the position permanently. Therefore unfortunately I must tender my resignation effect[ive] on Oct. 31, 2017.

“It has been my great honor to serve the residents of Belleville and I wish my colleagues on the council continued success as you govern our beloved Belleville.”

Then, as the Sept. 26 meeting of the Township Council was proceeding, Cavanaugh announced the receipt of a new communication – addressed to township attorney Tom Murphy, township manager Mauro Tucci and herself – from Longo requesting to, “Please amend my resignation effective Sept. 25, 2017.”

But, even while Murphy was trying to explain the law as it relates to Longo’s situation, an impatient Councilman Kennedy pressed for a vote on his resolution to vacate Longo’s seat and it passed.

“It was time,” Kennedy told The Observer last week when asked the reason for his action. “[Longo’s] permanently in Florida.

“The attorney [Murphy] says he’s allowed to stay [on the council] eight weeks and

then he can be removed. But [the situation] is just drawing too much attention so, in a way, the people criticizing [Longo] were right.”

Murphy told The Observer last week it’s his understanding that the council can appoint someone on an interim basis to fill Longo’s unexpired term within 30 days of the time his seat is vacated – whatever date that’s determined to be.

Longo’s term runs through June 30, 2018. Theoretically, he could run for re-election in the May 2018 municipal contest.

Or, failing council action on an interim appointment, a special election could be scheduled – within certain time parameters – not readily known to Murphy.

Kennedy was asked if council members had considered a possible interim replacement for Longo. “It hasn’t been discussed,” he said.

Longo, reached via his cell phone last week, told The Observer that he was working as an outside salesman for Staples when, in April, he was offered the job of national sales representative” for the company, dealing with the commercial printing industry.

That position, he said, was “based in Florida.”

He said he started the new job on a probationary basis and, at the same time, “I put my house [in Belleville] up for sale,” while renting lodgings in Florida in the Boca Raton area. And he alerted Mayor Ray Kimble he wouldn’t be seeking re-election.

NEWS IN BRIEF KFD getting new thermal-imaging cameras KEARNY – The Kearny Fire Department is getting new equipment with some help from Uncle Sam. The town governing body voted Sept. 26 to accept a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters grant of $72,000 for thermal imaging cameras.

The aid is conditioned on the town putting up a “match’ of $6,545 in local funds.

Fire Chief Steven Dyl said he hopes to acquire nine cameras.

The equipment will replace old cameras more than 10 years old that are now “obsolete,” the chief said.

Dyl said the hand-held cameras are equipped with infrared capability that is sensitive to “contrast between hot and cold and can show you where the heat is going.”

So firefighters who may be hindered by smoke conditions or otherwise preventing from tracing the fire’s path have the advantage of a visual aid in locating the fire and/or an unconscious victim, Dyl said.

Thermal cameras are now “used routinely” by most fire departments, he said.

Dyl said his department was exploring the best method for securing the cameras, whether through conventional bidding, state contract or cooperative purchasing.

In other business conducted at the meeting, the governing body: • For technical reasons, reintroduced three ordinances — one amending the Passaic Ave. Redevelopment Plan to allow for an immediate care medical facility as a principal permitted use, one authorizing bonding $21.65 million reconstruction of the Gunnell Oval recreation complex and one bonding $6,788,000 for improvements to the Duke St. pump station.

Responding to an email from The Observer, Mayor Alberto Santos said the Passaic Ave. ordinance “requires Planning Board review” prior to council action and that review was expected Oct. 4.

Council action was, therefore, “premature.”

Santos said the two bond ordinances were reintroduced “because both

projects are eligible for N.J. Environmental Infrastructure loans which means no down payment is needed on either bond. The original ordinances incorrectly included down payments.”

• Agreed to waive fees for local businesses for the Kearny 150-Year Celebration on Oct. 1. “This is a town event in honor of our anniversary,” the mayor said in an email. “We want to encourage the town’s businesses and nonprofits to participate in the event.”

• Went on record opposing Senate Bills S1045 and S1046 proposing amendments to the Open Public Records Act (OPRA) and to the Open Public Meetings Act (OPMA) designed to ensure greater public access to information maintained by government.

S1045 would, among other things, require municipal government to give notice of and provide minutes of meetings of sub-committees and make available any attachments, such as vendor contracts and labor agreements, to resolutions passed by the governing body. (Kearny Town Council has several sub-committees.)

S1046 would also compel municipal government to provide “records pertaining to the factual basis for the final administrative determination of a disciplinary action, including a disciplinary action that is the result of an internal affairs investigation by a public safety agency ….” (The KPD is in the deposition stage for an administrative hearing for two cops.)

In an email, Santos said: “Our resolution supports increased transparency but not imposing additional unfunded burdens on municipal clerks.”

PBS series recalled turbulent era for U.S. G

reat thanks go to Ken Burns and Lynn Novick for their 10part, 18-hour PBS series on “The Vietnam War,” whose concluding episode aired last week.

In what could easily have turned into a polemic on a controversial, undeclared war, they presented an historical framework beginning with the French colonization effort and ending with the ignominious U.S. withdrawal, spaced over a half-century of turmoil in the country.

Against that backdrop, the producers artfully weaved battle scenes, peace talks and interviews with government and military officials, along with veterans and civilians – from both sides – who related their very personal experiences dealing with the war.

Also interspersed with the talking heads were excerpts from classified U.S. documents and tapes of presidential conversations that shed light on what motivated our political leaders to push for body-count ratios and seemingly senseless military offensives resulting in the slaughter of too many American lives.

The series also depicted North Vietnamese political leaders willing to sacrifice thousands of their soldiers to push out American and South Vietnamese forces.

We were reminded how America propped up a corrupt South Vietnamese regime, how U.S. generals

(eerily reminiscent of Civil War Gen. George McClellan) continued to prod Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon for more and more troops in the face of stern resistance by the North Vietnamese, how Nixon sought to derail peace talks until after his election – thereby causing more needless deaths.

After we got our troops out, the military dumped boatloads of weaponry into the country and told the beleaguered South Vietnamese to defend themselves. You know where those ended up.

In a final irony, the Russians and Chinese – who had aligned themselves with the V.C. during the war – turned on their former ally.

There was more about the

widespread anti-war demonstrations in the U.S., Jane Fonda’s infamous visit to Hanoi, the killings at Kent State, the uproar at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, the conviction of U.S. Army Lt. James Calley Jr. for the My Lai massacre of ’68, the impact of Agent Orange and the mistreatment of returning U.S. veterans.

Interviews with some U.S. vets – including one POW – revealed the horrific internal struggles they faced, both “in country” and, later, stateside, as they grappled with conflicting emotions of pride in country, anger and guilt.

It’s a lot to absorb – particularly for millennials who had no direct connection to the terrible events – but even for

those who lived through the craziness.

The series had a lot of resonance for me: I was in Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., at the time the war was raging and, luckily for me, I drew a high draft number – I remember, it was No. 345 – plus I have flat feet – which disqualified me from serving.

Had the Army ended up taking me – assuming they could’ve found a uniform for someone my size (about 5 feet) – I have no doubt they’d have deployed me as a tunnel rat in ‘Nam to search for the Viet Cong.

During my time at Lafayette, I was a reporter on the school paper whose editor was head of the local Students for a Democratic

Society (SDS) chapter, an ultra-liberal group, which was planning an anti-war rally on campus.

I tried reasoning with him that he couldn’t be objective as a journalist on the one hand while advocating for a political cause on the other.

He conceded my point and then told me to cover the rally for the paper. I did and I recall that the marchers got pelted with water balloons by some of the more rambunctious campus conservatives. I remained neutral.

Our senior class graduation (June 1970) came on the heels of the U.S. invasion of Cambodia – the opening of a second front, in effect, in the Vietnam Conflict – and many of us seniors (me included) wore white armbands as a protest gesture. Like so many other actions on other campuses nationwide – including the unrest at Columbia University in New York – it was a futile effort.

As a sometimes stage actor in community theater, I had an opportunity to appear in a Jersey City-based production of “Midsummer Night’s Dream” in 1982 with a fellow actor named Bob Perrilloux, a Vietnam vet who had lost both legs in combat. He used prosthetics to get around. He never complained. After his surgery, he wheeled around to other recovering vets to keep up their spirits.

Now there was a true hero.

And me? I was worried about forgetting my lines. Me of the flat feet that kept me out of war. And alive.

A Message from the Harrison Water Department: The Harrison Water Dept. will flush hydrants throughout Harrison beginning the week of October 2nd 2017. Crews will work Monday through Friday between 9p.m and 1a.m. to minimize customer inconvenience. The flushing program is expected to last for about 5 weeks. Ending November 3, 2017.

Flushing removes harmless minerals that collect in the water mains. The project is part of the Town routine maintenance program to assure high water quality. Flushing hydrants help to maintain the integrity of the distribution system by keeping the water lines clean. It is also necessary for fire protection because flushing ensures that the hydrants are working properly.

During the flushing process, customers may experience low water pressure or discolored water. While the water is safe to drink, customers may prefer to wait until it runs clear before drinking or washing clothes or dishes.

A humbled Poplaski said he was just doing his job — but he’s proud to have received these awards because, he says, people only see the down side to police work.

“People don’t see this side of police work often,” Poplaski said. “They see the negative stuff — the negative side to this work.

So I am very proud of this award.”

Poplaski indeed should be proud. Because as he, himself, said, he’s touched lives in an incredible age range — from a 5-day-old to an elderly man in need of CPR. “Whether it’s from an infant who hadn’t even seen the world yet to a man who’d lived a long life, that’s what makes this even more special,” Poplaski said.

KEARNY – female shoplifting suspect fleeing Walmart last week was abandoned in the parking lot by her male companion, who drove off without her — but not before trying to run down a Kearny cop, police reported.

However, considering her reputed conduct, you might have left her behind, too.

At 1 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24, KPD Officer Victor Girdwood responded to the store’s security alert and observed the woman running through the lot, heading for a 2002 gold Saturn, police said.

But before she could enter the car, Girdwood stopped her, at which point the male driver allegedly revved the engine, put the auto in gear and drove toward the officer, who was about 15 feet away.

The cop jumped clear, and the Saturn fled onto Harrison Ave. “and has not been seen since,” police said. But Girdwood had gotten the plate number.

Left behind was Lisa Askins, 54, of Newark, who allegedly had attempted to steal $200 worth of Walmart merchandise, pushing a security guard as she fled.

Police said Askins refused to comply with Girdwood’s directions to return to the store, pushed him and had to be wrestled to the ground. She allegedly continued to struggle and could not be cuffed until OC spray was deployed.

was called to assess the effects of the OC on the suspect — and to treat abrasions Girdwood had suffered during the struggle. Police said Askins had also tried to bite him.

Askins was arrested on charges of robbery and aggravated assault on a police officer. While she was carted off to KPD headquarters, cops remained on the scene to gather video evidence of what had transpired in the store and the lot.

Video footage also aided detectives, who were able to ID the car and locate it in Newark and who “are in the process of drawing up complaints against the driver,” authorities reported.

NA’s Smith on a goal-scoring tear It was almost a year ago to the date, Oct. 15, 2016 to be precise, that Savannah Smith’s life changed dramatically.

The then-North Arlington High School sophomore was having a sensational soccer season, scoring 16 goals in the Vikings’ first 10 games, when disaster struck.

“I heard a pop noise and I knew my knee didn’t feel right,” Smith said. “I went to shoot the ball and another girl came over to the play. I swung my leg and missed the ball and that was it.”

The result was a torn anterior cruciate ligament in Smith’s right knee. The injury required surgery and ended Smith’s sophomore season in a heartbeat.

Smith’s season-ending injury also ended any hope of the Vikings competing for state or league honors.

“When she went down, we only had two losses,” said North Arlington girls’ soccer coach Dan Farinola. “After that, we only won two more games.”

Smith was playing a solid center midfield for the Vikings, scoring at will and distributing the ball to others.

But it was time to concentrate on only one thing — getting better

and getting back out there.

“I was really determined to get back,” Smith said. “Missing those games really made me upset. I really wanted to get back to show people what I could do. I was really scared that I might not be able to play again.”

Smith was fortunate to have a mother who works in the medical industry at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair. Through her mother, Smith was introduced to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Michael Benke, who determined that Smith’s injury wasn’t as severe as most ACL tears that require taking a ligament from another part of the body and placing it in the patient’s injured knee.

Benke determined that Smith’s ligament could be repaired, but it was a radical surgery that has not been in regular use yet throughout the country.

Smith worked diligently with her rehabilitation.

She also went to the New York Giants/Hackensack University Medical Center training facility in Maywood to work with physical trainer Gio Grassi, who does a lot of the strength work with the Giants. see VIEW page

Maroon Raiders earn first victory in second tenure for coach DiGregorio

T

he high school football season wasn’t exactly going well for the Maroon Raiders of Nutley High School.

The Maroon Raiders lost heartbreaking games to West Essex (27-22) and Pascack Valley (35-31), as well as a hard 49-21 setback against neighboring Bloomfield. In any case, the second tenure of head coach Steve DiGregorio didn’t exactly start as planned.

“It was not part of the plan,” DiGregorio said. “We had the game against West Essex and blew it with four seconds left.

The Pascack Valley game, we had a chance to put the game away with six minutes left and didn’t do it. We played some good football at times, but we didn’t have anything to show for it. We just didn’t win.”

So as the Maroon Raiders were preparing to face undefeated Irvington, the No. 8-ranked team in New Jersey, DiGregorio tried to get his troubled team to bounce back.

“We had to trust and believe,” DiGregorio said. “We had a great week of practice getting ready. It’s a credit to the kids. We did not feel sorry for ourselves and we weren’t down. As disappointing as the loss to Pascack Valley was, we had to make steps forward.

We had to make sure that we didn’t make mistakes.

Added DiGregorio, “Here’s what I told them. I said that we had to identify the five plays that could have made us 2-1 instead of 0-3. And we had to correct the mistakes

that we made. I knew that we could get things done. I know coaches always say things, but I don’t say something unless I truly believe it.”

The Maroon Raiders all came together in order to face Irvington.

“The offensive line dramatically improved,” DiGregorio said. “We had five different kids who scored touchdowns.

We had three touchdown passes.”

And almost incredibly, the Maroon Raiders scored 34 straight points en route to a 34-12 victory over Irvington that gave DiGregorio his first win as Nutley head coach after five years.

“Right now, we’re 1-0,” DiGregorio said. “That’s the way we’re looking at it. The other two losses were heartbreaking, but they’re over. Now see NUTLEY next page

we’re moving forward.”

There were several heroes for the Maroon Raiders. Let’s start with junior quarterback Josh O’Neill, who completed 12-of-24 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns and scored another TD on a run.

“Josh has done well since the opening game,” DiGregorio said. “He’s been throwing the ball nicely. He’s very poised back there and he’s been giving his receivers a chance to catch the ball. He’s

done really well. He’s just a terrific athlete, both running and throwing.”

Another key performer is senior running back Nick Mainiero, who carried the ball 30 times for 122 yards and scored a touchdown.

“He runs so hard every carry,” DiGregorio said. “He’s so tough. He’s been playing well.”

Vinnie Russo had two catches for 86 yards and a touchdown. He also made 11 tackles on defense and had one of his team’s three inter-

ceptions.

Eli Acosta had three catches and a touchdown. Jon Luberto had three receptions and an interception on defense.

“Jon missed the Pascack Valley game with an injury,” DiGregorio said. “He made two big-time catches in this game and made about five tackles. He was a strong safety, but we moved him to weak side linebacker and it worked well. We were looking to retool out team a little.

Jon helped us on both sides of the ball.”

GASTROPARESIS

Gastroparesis is a condition in which the vagus nerve stops functioning correctly and, as a result, the stomach is not able to empty itself in the proper way. Much of the time, exactly how the vagus nerve becomes damaged is an unknown factor. Sometimes harm comes from uncontrolled diabetes, a particularly tricky situation because diabetics with gastroparesis have a hard time regulating blood sugar. Conditions such as Parkinson’s or multiple sclerosis can cause gastroparesis, as can gastric surgery during which an injury can occur to the vagus nerve, resulting in long-term problems.

together. Any role that Coach Hinchcliffe has to offer me, I’m going to do it, because he knows what’s best for the team. I was open to the changes. Over the first two games, I had more of a receiver role, but I wasn’t getting the ball as much. But these changes worked out well.”

Sure looked that way.

Huseinovic carried the ball 12 times for 197 yards and scored three touchdowns. He also had 10 tackles and collected two sacks in the Blue Tide’s huge 28-14 victory.

“I just knew we weren’t coming out of that game with another loss,” Huseinovic said.

For his efforts, Huseinovic has been selected as The Observer Athlete of the Week for the past week.

Talk about irony. Almost four years ago to the date, Adam Huseinovic had 196 yards and two TDs to earn Observer Athlete of the Week honors. Dustin Hu-

seinovic collected one yard more than his older brother in earning Athlete of the Week accolades as well.

Hinchcliffe knew that he could rely upon Huseinovic.

“He’s a very good athlete,” Hinchcliffe said. “He’s a typical small school athlete. He plays both ways in football and plays other sports. He has to be an Ironman for us.

He has to stay on the field all the time. He has to play through the little nicks and bumps he may get. He hasn’t come off the field all season.

He’s never shied away from responsibilities. We keep piling things on his plate and he understands his role.”

Huseinovic said that he loves playing both football and baseball, but he believes he is a better performer on the gridiron.

“I’m better in football so I like football better,” Huseinovic said. “We want to get back to the state playoffs again. That’s our biggest goal. Now we definitely have a shot. We plan on having a

great season. This is just the start.”

The Blue Tide faces Secaucus this weekend.

“We want to get back to 2-2,” Huseinovic said. “It’s like a fresh start for us. If we can get back to 2-2, we’ll go from there.”

Hinchcliffe says that he has a good relationship with Huseinovic.

“We needed something to feel good about after the first two losses,” Hinchcliffe said. “If we were successful against Elmwood Park, we could build off that. I counted on Dustin to get things done. He has this special tenacity about him, almost like he’s in Beast mode (eluding to Oakland Raiders’ running back Marshawn Lynch’s nickname). He can do it all.

He doesn’t ask questions. He doesn’t complain. He doesn’t ask why he has to do certain things. He’s everything you could want in a football player.”

His sister and nephew are also there and they, too, are safe, he said.

“I know a lot of my friends on the island have lost everything,” Marzan added.

Calvache, a Belleville High alum and athlete who helped sponsor the first local Ecuadorian flag-raising three years ago to commemorate that country’s independence anniversary, and a similar ceremony last year honoring Puerto Rico, also has a personal stake in the collection drive.

“My aunt and uncle who live there lost their home in Aguadilla,” he said, “but they are safe, staying for now in a church.”

was 18 when Hurricane Hugo hit the island in 1989 and “I thought the end of the world had come. We had winds of 90 miles an hour.”

But this year, first there was Irma in early September — a Category 5 hurricane with winds exceeding 156 miles an hour — that blew by just north of the island, knocking out power for an estimated 1 million residents.

And then, on Sept. 20, Maria struck, a Category 4 storm sweeping through the mainland at wind speeds upwards of 130 mph, causing widespread devastation, uprooting trees and houses, taking down power lines and sources of potable water and ruining crops. (It, too, at one point, had been a Category 5 before reaching Puerto Rico.)

“The damage is beyond what anybody can imagine,” he said.

And it’s very personal for Marzan.

“It’s so great to be here with you, the people of Lyndhurst,” Pascrell said. “I consider myself very lucky to represent the people of Lyndhurst in Washington, D.C. Happy anniversary, Lyndhurst!”

Pascrell presented Mayor Robert Giangeruso with a Congressional Proclamation honoring the township’s 150th anniversary.

Giangeruso, dressed in a blue suit for the occasion, matching the township’s unofficial color, thanked Pascrell for his presence and for always “being a true friend to Lyndhurst. Thank you for being here — and thank you all for being here. Let’s get this parade started.”

And, after a few minutes, that’s what happened — as the grand parade made its way from and back to Township Hall, with Annie Oakley, played by The Observer’s own Lisa Feorenzo, leading the way.

Behind her were reps from the Lyndhurst Police and Fire departments, scores of classic cars, representatives of various township organizations and businesses, the Lyndhurst High School marching band and various other groups and dignitaries, including state Sen. Paul Sarlo and Bergen County Clerk John S. Hogan among others.

After the parade, it was off to Town Hall Park for a festival that included vendors selling all kinds of foods — many from Lyndhurst — games and face painting for kids, a classic car show, competitive games including tug-of-war and numerous live performances on the park’s grand stage.

It all lasted a total of 12 hours. And to say the 100th Anniversary committee pulled off a true extravaganza would be an understatement. And it left loads of residents and visitors to Lyndhurst thrilled beyond belief.

That included Mark L. Chertoff, who lived in Lyndhurst for many years before moving his family to Pennsylvania in 2011.

“When I heard this was happening in town, I made sure we marked it on our calendars,” Chertoff said. “I have a lot of special memories of growing up here — and I wanted to be able to bring my

kids here to a place that has such special significance.”

Chertoff says he really enjoyed the parade — and the food.

“It was great to see so many familiar faces in the parade,” he said. “And with all the different kinds of food they had, I can say I don’t have an empty stomach, that’s for sure.”

Chertoff was hardly the only one who left stuffed.

Leanne Nisbet has lived in Lyndhurst since 1982. She and her family came to Lyndhurst from Brooklyn at a time when her father wanted to offer her — and the rest of the family — a better life. And while she says she’s not involved in any civic activities, she wanted to come out to support what the anniversary committee “worked hard to put together.”

“They did a great job putting this day together — and lucky for us, the weather cooperated,” Nisbet said. “It looked like it was going to rain with some dark clouds just around the time the parade kicked off. But aside from like a few drops of a rain, it all seemed like it went off without a single glitch. This was a great day not just for the people of our township, but for everyone who came here from different places.”

Another of those visitors from out of town was John Buckfield, in Jersey from his new place of residence, just outside Atlanta.

“Yeah, I came in to visit my best friend who lives here,” Buckfield said. “At first, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to come — but I am glad we did. It was nice, for a day, not to have to travel anywhere and to have a good time. We all did.”

Just a few hours after things wound down in Lyndhurst — and a calendar day later — it was much of the same in Kearny, where scores of people came to Belgrove Drive, between Bergen Ave. and Afton St., for a similar celebration for Kearny 150th anniversary.

Mayor Alberto Santos said, at first, he was a bit worried about what the crowd size would be — but once things kicked off at around 3 p.m., his worries turned to joy — the place was packed. He was very grateful to the 150th anniversary committee for putting together a spectacular afternoon that featured numerous local bands, a Zipline (which we’re told both Second Ward Councilman Peter Santana and Third Ward Councilwoman

Carol Jean Doyle “experienced” in the early part of the day), face painting, a rockclimbing wall, a tea-cup ride, food of all kinds (including from three local eateries), cultural performances, tables with presentations for countless town organizations, a grandfinale fireworks show over the Passaic River and much more.

“The weather (was) beautiful, the turnout is amazing, and the activities, the food, the entertainment — everything is working out really well,” Santos told The Observer as he took a short break from spending time with his family. “Everybody who participated in organizing this, all the groups that are participating … it truly makes this a Kearny event. It reinforces who we

are as a community, and I am very pleased that people came out, together, to support each other.”

Santana echoed Santos’s sentiments.

“Such a great turnout this is,” Santana, the Second Ward representative, said. “It’s been so nice to see people having a good time and enjoying all we had to offer. A really great day.”

And a really great day was what many had to say about the conclusion to the year-long celebration of the town’s sesquicentennial, including Gladys Santana, of Kearny, who is not related to the councilman.

“I wish we could have things like this all the time,” she said.

“This was great for my kids to do things with their friends —

and I was happy to know they were doing it in a safe environment.”

And safe, it was, indeed.

We were told there was a single minor injury a young boy suffered while playing football on Vets Field — but it was otherwise a flawless day, one for the memory books.

“Kearny will always be my home, even though I moved away,” said Francis O’Brien, who spent the first 32 years of his life in Kearny and who now calls Edgewater home. “I saw so many people I haven’t seen in a long time, so it was really a great homecoming for me. It really seems like everyone is having a great time.”

And if anyone wasn’t having a good time, we were hard pressed to find ‘em.
