No, instead, he was a special human being, a man whose wisdom was remarkable. He was more than just a celebrity. And yet, you would

never know he was someone known to millions across the country and the globe— he was that unassuming, so say the people who knew him best.

Can anything fix Walmart’s security issues?

KEARNY — Kearny meadows supermarket has security issues that are putting added pressures on local gendarmes and at least one local official is riled up about it.

The situation came to a boil at the Sept. 12 meeting of the Kearny governing body.

Second Ward Councilman Richard Konopka raised the specter of public safety in his ward being compromised by police being called out at all hours to deal with criminal activities at the Walmart Supercenter on Harrison Ave. The lawmaker referenced a story in last week’s

issue of The Observer reporting that a complex shoplifting incident at 2:45 a.m. on Sept. 4 brought a police superior and four cops to the store to apprehend five juveniles and one adult.

KEARNY — For what has been billed as the “closing event” of its 150-year anniversary celebration (even though subsequent events are scheduled), Kearny is entrusting that task to an out-of-town contractor.

On Sept. 12, the mayor and Town Council agreed to pay $32,500 to Cliffhanger Productions of Rutherford to run a block party on Sunday, Oct. 1, from 3 to 8 p.m. in and around Veteran’s Memorial Field on Belgrove Drive.

That event, according to the anniversary website, “will showcase the history and diverse cultures of the Town of Kearny” and will include “musical performances, food, beer garden, a Zipline, fireworks [and] presentations from many of Kearny’s civic and cultural organizations.”

The governing body also voted to award a $17,000 contract to Garden State Fireworks of Millington to produce a fireworks display as the climax of the block party, beginning at 7:15 p.m. at the Frank A. Vincent Marina.

Fireworks can be viewed from Belgrove Drive between Bergen Ave. and Afton St. or from the lower Veteran’s Field (Bunny) Hill. People should bring blankets. No chairs are permitted on the field.

Other anniversary events Take note: A recreation of a “Civil War Encampment,” referencing the former presence of the old Soldier’s & Sailor’s Home, that was to happen Sept. 16-17 on Veteran’s Field, has been tentatively rescheduled for Oct. 28-29. Presumably, the website will be updated to provide any updates.

Also scheduled are: a lecture by historian/author Bill

Styple on “Kearny Castle,” the one-time mansion home of Gen. Philip Kearny, for whom the town is named, on Thursday, Oct. 5, (time TBA) at the Kearny Museum; and a W.H.A.T. original production of a contemporary musical based on the life of Gen. Kearny Oct. 19, 20 and 21 at Lincoln School (see the W.H.A.T. website for more details).

An addendum to the firm’s contract with Kearny stipulates that its $32,500 contract fee “shall be paid solely out of the Kearny 150 Trust Account, consisting of donations toward the town’s 150th Anniversary Celebration.”

As of last week, that committee had received a total of nearly $77,000 in donations to handle expenses associated with the year-long celebration, according to town records.

The Cliffhanger contract – which The Observer reviewed last week – contains no fiscal breakdown to explain how the company arrived at its fee.

The headliners will perform on a “clamshell stage” to be furnished by the town.

• To that end, CP “will provide full sound production, backline, lighting, sound tech and assistant for the day,” plus “DJ with full sound system on second stage on Belgrove on the east side of the street where local groups can be invited to perform throughout the day ….” Together with the American Legion and VFW, CP “will provide all power [and] power generators where needed … as a cooperative effort.”

• CP will provide “popular costumed characters who will perform an interactive dance show, inviting children to participate,” along with a “stilt walker, balloon artist, juggler and mime.”

• CP will handle scheduling of all events and providing signage advertising performances on both stages.

• CP “will provide tents, tables and chairs for rent for any vendor and/or community group or organization” participating in the festival, along with “cotton candy, popcorn, dunk-tank, sno-cone machine that can be used as fundraisers for community groups.”

As part of the contract, CP has arranged for the appropriate liability insurance coverage.

Cliffhanger bills itself on its website as a “one-of-akind entertainment resource providing complete concert production and promotion, party and event planning services for private, corporate and municipal affairs.”

The firm has also been retained by Lyndhurst to organize the township’s upcoming Centennial Parade slated for Sept. 30.

It’s also handling the Sept.

16 Half-Way to St. Patrick’s Day festival in Rutherford and the Glen Rock Fall Festival on Sept. 24.

Stuyvesant makeover closer to reality Giangeruso hoping for ‘restaurant row’

By Ron Leir rleir@theobserver.com LYNDHURST — ction began on two fronts last week to advance Lyndhurst’s plans to revitalize part of its dormant business district and to build a new junior high school.

On Sept. 13, the township Board of Commissioners authorized the Lyndhurst Planning Board to “undertake a preliminary investigation” of certain properties on Stuyvesant and Valley Brook Aves.

And, in the process, the planners are being asked “to determine whether those designated properties qualify as a “non-condemnation” area in need of redevelopment.

Parcels along both sides of Stuyvesant to be investigated by the planners were listed as the following: 224, 228, 230, 232, 234, 236-238, 240242 Stuyvesant; 221-223, 225, 223, 219, 213, 227-229, 235, 237-239, 241 and 247 Stuyvesant.

The relevant parcels on Valley Brook are identified as: 320 and 312318 Valley Brook.

Further, the planners are also asked to “make a recommendation of the inclusion of any other property or properties located along Valley Brook Ave. and situated in Blocks 78, 80 and 82, near Grant, Cleveland and Chase Aves.”

Mayor Robert Giangeruso, referring to the targeted Stuyvesant sites, said the township is looking at the area between Tontine and Court Aves. with the intent of “making it look like a restaurant row and bringing in new ratables to help merchants in the area.”

Former Commissioner Brian Haggerty, who was appointed last week as an unpaid “planning and development associate, to provide research and evaluation of redevelopment opportunities within the township,” added that the town will be “having conversations with Stuyvesant Ave. property owners who are very anxious to have opportunities for more parking, better businesses and higher property values that an amended zoning would provide.”

As for Valley Brook, Giangeruso said the township hopes to “get some investors” interested in commercial development in that area, particularly on the site now occupied by Lincoln School, which is slated to be demolished upon

completion of the new junior high on Matera Field.

Improvements to NJ Transit’s train platform would be a linchpin for the township’s redevelopment aspirations.

The township has taken on the $53 million junior high project and plans to apply revenues to be realized from redevelopment projects to pay off the debt on the school project.

As part of its obligation relevant to that project, the Board of Commissioners agreed to contract with C.P. Engineers, the Sparta firm previously retained as consulting engineers, “to provide geotechnical services and a traffic study for the new junior high school in an amount not to exceed $185,000,” thereby bringing the firm’s total payments to date to $328,500.

The contract extension is to include “final geotechnical design, update of the traffic study and code compliance evaluation as well as assistance on the retaining wall and construction erosion control design elements.”

C.P. Engineers’ extended contract is based on its bid proposal submitted Feb. 15.

In other business, the Board of Commissioners: • Adopted an amended ordinance regulating conduct of public meetings calling for the township, “to further the transparency of the governance of the township,” to hire “a professional videographer” to record public meetings of the Board of Commissioners and to make that recording “available for viewing by the public on the township’s official website.”

• Authorized granting a tax refund of $58,020 as a 2017 credit to Seneca Management Corp., operating as the Quality Inn, 10 Polito Ave., based on a state tax court appeal.

• Extended a contract for auto repair services, cars, trucks, light trucks, including police vehicles, for a fourth year to Frank’s Truck Center, of Lyndhurst, at the mechanic’s hourly rate of $74.50 with a 15% discount on parts.

• Agreed to partner with Mahwah, Oradell and Wallington to provide municipal dive teams, through the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, to undertake underwater search and rescue, including underwater evidence recovery.

Will Nutley BOE green-light referendum?

By Ron Leir rleir@theobserver.com NUTLEY — The Nutley Board of Education will consider authorizing a proposed school referendum at its next meeting.

In a Sept. 15 press release, the BOE and Schools Supt.

Julie Glazer said they would conduct a “Town Hall meeting” focused on school facility improvements on Monday,

Sept. 25, at 7:15 p.m. in the auditorium of John H. Walker Middle School, 325 Franklin Ave. It will follow the regularly scheduled meeting of the Nutley BOE at 6:30 p.m. in the Walker School music room.

Drawings of the proposed construction projects will be available for review in the school’s auditorium lobby from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.

At the Town Hall meeting,

BOE staff will provide the public with projected preliminary eligible costs and state debt service aid, review the planned construction and discuss the tax impact. Expected to attend are the school district’s bond attorney, financial advisor, architects, administration and BOE members.

the ballot on Dec. 12, according to the press release.

Plans presented to the public earlier this year called for additions and alterations to four schools at a cost pegged at about $68 million which, with an offset from state aid, would fall a bit to $66.5 million, which would mean about $347 in additional annual taxes for the owner of an average house assessed at $316,427 over the 25-year life of the bonds for the project.

However, to soften the blow, the BOE proposes to split the financing into two bond sales which, it says, would reduce the impact in the first year to a tax hike of about $183.50 on the average house.

Under the conceptual plans outlined in February, the BOE would allocate: • $36.7 million for a 3-story addition to Walker School containing 20 new classrooms for incoming sixth-graders, a new cafeteria and service kitchen, multipurpose room, bathrooms and reconfiguration of administrative offices.

• $15.6 million for expansion at Yantacaw School, including six new classrooms, multipurpose room with kitchen, additional bathrooms, relocation of main office and secured entrance. The improvements would replace the existing classroom trailers.

• $6.95 million for a 3-story addition containing six new classrooms, bathrooms and an elevator at Washington School, in place of existing classroom trailers.

• $8.75 million for additional gym/multipurpose space and renovated media center/TV studio space to allow for four new classrooms and common learning areas at Nutley High School.

If the BOE green-lights putting the question to voters, community committees will be formed this fall for those interested in volunteering on a number of referendum-related topics. People who want to serve are invited to meet with the superintendent in the Walker School library on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. or Thursday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m.

N.A. man enlists donors for storm victims NORTH ARLINGTON — A local tattoo artist channeled his creativity into civic-minded volunteerism focused on extending badly needed aid to hurricane victims in Texas and Florida.

North Arlington resident Steve Egoavil enlisted help from Karen and Robert Garrison, members of the N.A. Volunteer Fire Department, Construction Official Robert Kairys and Councilman Dan Pronti to organize collections of non-perishable foods, medical supplies, infant-care and hygiene products and pet food.

Special thanks, Egoavil said, go to H&M International and CMA-CGM for making available a tractor-trailer truck in which an estimated $40,000 to $45,000 worth of donations were loaded for shipment down south entrusted to driver Robert Garrison.

He credited the local VFW

for making available its expansive parking lot as a staging area for the load-in.

Organizers also made use of Daniel Morris Park on River Road.

Last week, Egoavil reported: “We are splitting the aid we were able to collect between the Houston Food Bank in Texas and Feeding South Florida. Although the Houston food bank could use the items, they now have a steady stream of aid pouring in and gave us their blessing to offer help to the people of Florida. We will send a money donation of $1,000 to the Houston Food Bank.”

Feeding South Florida, whose website describes it as “the sole Feeding America food bank serving Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties,” told Egoavil that, “they have residents from the Florida Keys staying at shelters in their area and are providing food

and aid to them directly as well as everyone in the surrounding communities that need help.”

Egoavil said he was overwhelmed by the generosity of those who stopped by – both from in and out of North Arlington – to give.

“I’m extremely proud of my community who chose to get involved,” Egoavil said.

“Seeing all those people’s faces really made all the hard work more than worth it.

We actually had people from Florida up here who donated items, visiting and seeking refuge with friends and family. Funny how we are connected in more ways than we realize sometimes, but I’m just happy to have been part of this experience.

“This was a good way for us to come together and simply help people in need.

And that’s just what we were able to do.”

KEARNY — fter some three years of planning, studying and getting public feedback, Kearny is taking the first step to actualizing a remake of its Gunnell Oval athletic complex.

On Sept. 12, the town governing body introduced an ordinance authorizing bonding for up to $20,567,000 for the reconstruction of the Oval. It will be up for adoption after a public hearing Sept. 26.

Infrastructure costs alone — raising the site out of a flood zone, installing an environmental cap to cover toxic sub-surface hydrocarbons, a drainage system and pump station — could total $16 million.

• It’s getting $500,000 from the Hudson County Open Space Trust Fund for playground improvements.

If you see something, say something

By Karen Zautyk was leaving a local supermarket recently when I saw something on a Starbucks table by the exit door: a small, zippered pack.

There was no one sitting at the table. There was no one near the table. I was going to keep walking, but I couldn’t.

I turned back, and, pointing to the pack, called to the lone customer at the Starbucks counter: “Is that yours?” She glanced over and said, “No.” But the barista had heard me, too. “It’s mine,” she said. “It’s my lunch.” Then she smiled and added, “Thank you for asking about it.”

We both knew what had been going through my head: Unattended package = possible danger.

There was a time when I would not have asked, when I probably would not have even noticed it. But times have changed.

Awhile back, at another store (which shall remain nameless), I noticed a fairly large, unattended backpack on the floor just inside the entrance. I actually hunted down the manager to alert him, but he offered an explanation. He told me that kids who come in after school are told to leave their packs by the entrance — apparently that’s better to deter potential young shoplifters.

I thought the policy was dumb then and still do, although I haven’t seen any packs for a long time. Perhaps the store smartened up. (In case it didn’t, I am not naming it. It’s part of a chain, and for all I know, the policy may have come from “corporate,” meaning there could be unat-

These two incidents came to mind as I watched the TV coverage of the London Underground terror bombing last week. At this writing, two suspects have been arrested, but few details have been released.

One question I have not yet heard answered — or even ASKED — is why no one reported an unattended bucket in a crowded commuter car during morning rush hour.

Did you see photos of the bucket that held the bomb? It looks pretty flippin’ big. How could it go unnoticed? Unreported?

A friend told me she had heard the bucket was inside a shopping bag. So what? It was still apparently unattended.

(And the bag had to be pretty flippin’ big, too.)

I had expected that Londoners would not have been so oblivious to a potential threat.

I hope New Yorkers are not.

Yes, millions of people

travel on thousands of trains every day. The odds of there being a terrorist bomb in one car are microscopic. But not impossible.

Which is why, “If you see something (no matter how seemingly innocuous), say something” should be imprinted in all our brains.

Do not be shy. Speak up.

Ask a question.

This does not mean you need walk around in a state of panic. Just be alert and aware of things out of the ordinary.

I was not about to frantically call 911 when I saw the pack in the supermarket, but I would have contacted some other store employee if I had not gotten an explanation from the barista.

These days, you never know. Never.

••• Addendum: Writing about London, reminded me of my first visit there. I entered an Underground station to find on the platform a hand-lettered poster board (this was precomputerized signs) noting that that a station down the line was temporarily closed “due to UXB.” I asked someone what that meant and learned that the letters stood for “Unexploded Bomb.” It was also when I first learned that UXBs remained a London problem.

They were not the work of terrorists, as we define them now.

These were bombs dropped by the Nazis during “The Blitz” of World War II. Occasionally, these explosives obviously did not explode but just buried themselves in the ground, only to be discovered decades later, often by construction workers. But the bombs still could detonate. And apparently, can still be found.

According to Wikipedia, in 2008, a 2,000 lb. UXB was uncovered in East London — an area particularly devastated by enemy bombers in WWII — and in 2009, British construction-industry regulators published an official guide for workers “to provide advice on assessing the risk posed” by a UXB.

Remembering America’s history

By Karen Zautyk kzautyk@theobserver.com BELLEVILLE — ast week marked the anniversaries of four events significant in American history — two forever inextricably linked, one — alas — nearly forgotten, and all related to this nation’s quest for freedom. All involve battles against the British.

And, for reasons we shall explain, all these anniversaries also had a special meaning for Belleville.

We’ll start with the “forgotten” fight: the Battle of Second River, the only battle of the American Revolution fought in Essex County.

We wrote a bit about this in July, since every July 4, the Belleville Historical Society holds a remembrance ceremony in the graveyard of the Old Dutch Reformed Church on Main St. Society President Michael Perrone (who this year was named the township’s official historian) shared these details of the battle: “On the morning of Sept. 12, 1777, British forces appeared on the hilltop of what is now Belleville Turnpike and began an artillery barrage of the village of Second River [Belleville’s name back then] on the west bank of the Passaic River. The church bell rang out an alarm and the local militia quickly gathered.

“The British had come to gather livestock and provisions for their troops in New York and to eliminate the local militia forces. The first

day of fighting was a daylong cannon duel between the two sides. The second day (Sept.

14) was both sides being reinforced and shifting battle lines.”

That new battle line, Perrone noted, was in what is now Branch Brook Park near Mill St. between Union and Franklin Aves.

The Americans fielded several hundred men. “They were, however, no match for the British and Hessians (an estimated 2,000 troops) and were forced to retreat under the cover of darkness,” Perrone explained. “The identity of one of the American soldiers killed is known, Pvt. Benjamin Salter. Eight Brit-

ish soldiers were killed. Both Salter and the British would have been buried in unmarked graves on or near the battlefield.”

The next time you are in Branch Brook Park, think about that.

While Second River was a British victory, the next two battles (in the War of 1812)

on the anniversary list saw the Brits more-than-soundly defeated. In fact, one of them, the Battle of Plattsburgh, N.Y., was in Perrone’s words, “the battle that saved America.

There would be no America if the British had won.”

Born in 1782, young Alexander was sent by his parents in New York “to live with

his aunt in Belleville so that he could be educated at the prestigious nearby Newark Academy,” Perrone said. Macomb married his wife, Sarah, at Belleville’s Christ Episcopal Church in 1803, and the couple lived at 125 Main St. Macomb was a member of the first class at West Point and was a protégé of Alexander Hamilton.

On Sept. 11, 1814, Macomb was commanding American Army forces in Plattsburgh when the British, under Gov. Gen. George Prevost, invaded — launching “the largest attack ever on the U.S.” Prevost (who Perrone said was born in Hackensack) had 15,000 men; Macomb had just 1,500. But Plattsburgh was the site of the American forces’

supply depot, and Macomb was not about to surrender an inch of it.

While the U.S. troops were fighting off the enemy on land for two days, the British sent in a fleet of ships — including five large gunboats — from Lake Champlain.

“Thanks to the brilliant Naval Commander Thomas Macdonough, the American Naval force was able to defeat the superior British fleet, and without their naval supply line, the British were forced to retreat,” Perrone explained.

That’s retreat by both land and sea.

When the war ended, both Macomb and Macdonough were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal (which can be equated to today’s Medal of Honor) by President James Madison.

Perrone noted: “Macomb

was later appointed by President John Quincy Adams to be the Commanding General of the U.S. Army, the nation’s highest military office. He died in office at the age of 57.

His funeral procession was led by President John Tyler and former President Adams, and he is buried at the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C.” Not bad for a Jersey boy.

And a P.S. from Perrone: Macomb’s Gold Medal was recently sold by a German auction house for $250,000.

He was 80.

Vincent was born in 1937 (not 1939 as others have reported) as Frank Vincent Gattuso Jr. in North Adams, Mass. He was raised just

across the Hackensack River in Jersey City.

From Vincent’s personal website were tidbits most probably didn’t know.

“Over the years, Frank has received many awards for his various achievements on and off the screen,” the site says. “ In 2002, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Back East Picture Show at the Hoboken Film Festival. That same year he received the Italian-American Entertainer of the Year Award presented by the Italian Tribune. In 2005, he re-

ceived the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Garden State Film Festival. In 2006, Frank received the Honorary Branford Fellow from Branford College, Yale University.

The Observer spoke to a Nutley resident who said she’d known Vincent as neighbor —not as celebrity.

“He would always do what he could to help,” said Maria Morgan, who said she lived in the same condo complex Vincent lived in when he was in Jersey. “I remember several years back when my daughter was just a baby. I had a bunch of grocery bags and a very loud crying little girl with me. What does he do when he sees me with my hands full? He carries the bags for me right into my unit.

“He was that kind of man.

Lisa Feorenzo, one of The Observer's two principal owners, knew Vincent for many years and was able to bring him to New Jersey to take part in several projects with the newspaper.

The most noted was nearly a decade ago when he flew into Jersey — and then came to Kearny — for the newspaper’s “Pizza Wars.”

Vincent’s son, Tony, took time just one day before his dad was laid to rest forever to reflect for The Observer on that life that was his dad’s.

In doing so, he certainly brought light to one of the most infamous lines in Hollywood Wiseguy history — one Vincent probably heard more than he cared to hear from his adoring fans.

ners with our gang at Goodfella’s and other places. We always managed to have adjoining rooms when we were away on a project — and (we’d) sit next to each other at dinners.

“There was no better person to do that with than Frank. Frank will always be in my heart and mind and I know that he will be running the show in heaven. I miss him already

Vincent is survived by his wife, Katherine; daughters Debra and Maria; a son Anthony; grandchildren Tori and TJ; and siblings Nick, Jim and Fran.

A funeral service took place for Vincent on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Caggiano Memorial Home, Montclair. His remains were cremated.

which was then the nation’s third-largest city, after New York and Philadelphia.

McHenry’s commander, Maj. George Armistead, had anticipated their arrival and had engaged nine seamstresses to create a 30-foot by 42-foot American flag to defy the enemy. “He did not want the British to miss it,” said Perrone. “He was telling them, ‘Here we are, right here!’”

However, by the time the battle actually began, the weather had turned nasty and the huge banner had been temporarily replaced by a storm flag.

The battle, when it did begin, lasted into the next day. For 25 hours, the British fleet unleashed its fury, firing 1,800 200-lb. bombs.

“That’s one every 45 seconds for 25 hours,” Perrone noted. And that was along with some 700 rockets.

Perrone also told us, “Major Armistead was the only person in the fort who knew that its powder-storage room, holding a quartermillion pounds of gun powder, was NOT bombproof!”

In an understatement, Perrone added, “This undoubtedly led to an enormous amount of additional stress on top of the battle.” The 34-year-old commander developed a heart condition and died four years later.

On Sept. 14, the British, realizing they were getting nowhere against the Americans despite the ferocity of the bombardment, withdrew. It was also on that morning, at dawn’s early light, that the massive

American flag was re-raised and Key — who had been on a “truce ship” and had witnessed the rockets’ red glare and bombs bursting in air — first set eyes on it. On the back of a letter in his pocket, he started writing his poem, originally titled “Defence (sic) of Fort M’Henry.”

The verses soon were renamed, set to music (ironically, that of a popular British drinking song), words and music were published in various U.S. newspapers and “The StarSpangled Banner” reached the top of the 19th-century version of America’s Hit Parade and evolved into the nation’s unofficial national anthem. Amazingly, it did not become “official” until 1931, after the Veterans of Foreign Wars launched a nationwide petition drive.

Last week, Perrone traveled to Fort McHenry to raise a smaller replica of the 15-star, 15-stripe banner that had flown there and he then brought the replica home to Belleville.

On Thursday, to commemorate the anthem’s creation and the three battles we have written about, the replica was raised over Belleville’s Town Hall by Councilmen Kevin Kennedy and Vincent Cozzarelli.

At the ceremony, the song — including its little-known last verse, containing the words “And this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust’” — was sung by Belleville High School student Jada Williams.

Belleville boys’ soccer off to solid start under new coach Polewka

he Harrison High School girls’ soccer team is off to somewhat of a slow start, winning only one of four matches in the early going.

But at least the Blue Tide has one of the premier players in the state in senior center midfielder Marta Silva.

Silva, who scored 40 goals last year as a junior, is off to a rousing start this year, collecting an astounding 12 goals and seven assists in Harrison’s first four games.

She now has 77 career goals, which means she’s 23 shy of 100 for her career. That’s a prestigious milestone only a handful of girls’ soccer players ever reach.

“She’s the rock of the team,” said third-year head coach Raphael Viana, a standout goalkeeper for some of Harrison’s state champions in the 2000s. “She’s been with the team since she was a freshman.”

But Viana sees the strain of being the premier player getting to Silva just a bit.

“We count on Marta a lot,” Viana said. “Since she creates so much attention, she feels like she has to put everything on her shoulders. She thinks if she’s not doing it herself, it’s not going to work. So we need our other players to step up a little.”

Viana said that the program is hurt tremendously because Harrison doesn’t have a true feeder system in place for younger girls to play soccer.

“We have a few girls who joined the team and never played soccer before,” Viana said. “So on their first day of varsity soccer, they had no experience. The (participation) numbers are so low. We can’t win if we have just three girls who played before. We can’t win without a feeder system. No matter what we do, I’m never going to get where I want the program to be without little girls playing in the town.”

Still, Viana credits the girls on his team for their efforts.

I

t’s a new era in Belleville High School boys’ soccer, as Gary Polewka takes over as the new head coach.

Polewka was an assistant coach a few years ago under former coach Gino DePinto from 2001 through 2002, then took a step away from coaching. He returned three years ago as the junior varsity coach and was elevated to the top spot this year, replacing Carlos Goncalves.

“It was an easy transition for me, because I knew all of the kids,” said Polewka, who is also a teacher at the school.

“Most of the seniors I already coached, so they know me.

I have a good rapport with them and a good relationship with them. It wasn’t an issue at all.”

Polewka knew that the Buccaneers were a better team than their record a year ago.

“I knew they were capable

of doing better than what they showed,” Polewka said.

Because of their performance last year, the Buccaneers were moved down to the Super Essex ConferenceColonial Division, where they stand to be more competitive.

“We should be able to handle the competition in the new division,” Polewka said.

After five games, the new head coach is pleased with his team’s performance, posting a 3-2 record with the losses to strong programs like Harrison in the season opener and Nutley last Friday.

“I’m happy with our play,” Polewka said. “The speed is getting better. We’re not making the same mistakes. I’m happy with the progress.”

The Buccaneers have wins over Orange, Science Park and Shabazz, with the latter two posting shutout wins.

Leading the way in goal is sophomore Fernando Pesantez.

“He’s been facing a lot

of shots,” Polewka said of Pesantez, who had to record 11 saves in the loss to Nutley Friday. “He’s made some phenomenal saves. He singlehandedly helped us win the Science Park game (a 1-0 decision). He started about 60% of the games last year as a freshman, but he was ready this year.”

The team’s sweeper is junior Isaac Cortes who was one of the team’s defenders last year.

The stopper is senior captain Alex Suero.

“We count on him a lot,” Polewka said of Suero. “He’s been stopping the attacks and getting his body on them. He’s a strong kid.”

Another defender is senior captain Daniel Pinedo.

“He’s in the nucleus of the leader position on our team,” Polewka said.

The other defender is junior Angel Ramos.

“They have a lot of heart,” Viana said. “They keep working. They keep busting their tails.”

Freshman Melissa Toth is the team’s goalkeeper.

“She’s doing what you expect from a freshman,” Viana said. “She has some moments.

She can develop into something special. She has the potential to be a four-year starter for us. So far, she’s been great.”

Viana is a coach who utilizes the “four-across” system of defense.

Senior Jen Santos is the leader of that defensive unit.

She has been a starter since she enrolled in Harrison.

Senior Chelsea Pineda is another defender. Pineda didn’t play soccer last year.

She ran cross country instead, but has now returned to soccer.

Junior Miriam Adina is another solid defender. Adina has the distinction of being a tae kwon do champion in her native Morocco.

Junior Jazmine Morgales is the other starting defender.

Viana has a lot of faith in his defensive unit.

“They’re coming together and working hard,” the coach said.

Sophomore Nicole Santos, the younger sister of Jen, mans the midfield along with Silva.

Sophomores Brianna Guinn and Kasey Vasquez are defensive minded midfielders.

Promising freshman Jessica Horvaht is one of the forwards.

“What I like most about her game is that she’s never rattled,” Viana said. “She makes good passes as well. She’s on her game.”

Senior Annabel Castillo is the other forward. She was a starter at striker last year for the Blue Tide.

The schedule gets a little easier now after a tough stretch where the Blue Tide lost to perennial power Dwight-Englewood, North Arlington and Newark East Side at Red Bull Arena. The East Side loss was particularly tough, as the Blue Tide fell, 5-4. They lost 6-4 to North Arlington in another scoring shootout.

“I think this team will get better as the season goes on,” Viana said. “We need about another five or six games together under our belts. By the time October comes, we should at least be putting a competitive team on the field.

The inexperience has hurt us early. But we should be able to compete more as the season moves on.”

“We’re not going to duck anyone,” Polewka said.

“We’re willing to play anyone. The Orange game, we were down, 1-0, at the half and then we picked up the engines and started going.

When Stefanee Pace Kivlehan was named as the new head coach at Kearny in the offseason, Matusz knew that it would be beneficial to her.

“I’ve known Stef for a while,” Matusz said. “When she came in, I had lots of hope for having a good season.”

But there’s no way that neither coach nor player could have ever imagined what Matusz would develop into a year later.

Matusz has downright exploded onto the scene this season as the premier goal scorer in New Jersey.

Incredibly, Matusz has scored 15 goals in the first five games of the 2017 season. She had one game with five goals against Bayonne and three games with three goals each against Union City, North Bergen and Memorial.

No Kearny soccer player — boy or girl — ever enjoyed such a start to a season.

“I definitely didn’t expect

it,” Matusz said. “I’m very surprised, but also very pleased by it.”

Pace Kivelhan, an AllAmerican player at Kearny during her playing days, wasn’t surprised with Matusz’s production.

“She had a great preseason,” Pace Kivelhan said. “She came in fit and strong. She did a lot of work in the offseason and was fitter and faster. It’s been impressive to watch.”

Continued from Page 18 Needless to say, Matusz has been selected as The Observer Athlete of the Week for the past week. Matusz is the first honoree of the 2017-2018 scholastic sports season. The weekly feature will culminate with the presentation of the Observer Male and Female Athletes of the Year sometime in June, 2018.

Matusz said that she worked diligently in the offseason to prepare for the current soccer season.

“I went every Wednesday to Rutgers University in New Brunswick for 12 weeks to do weight training,” Matusz said.

“It helped to build strength in my legs. I felt a positive effect on me right away.”

Matusz said that she plans on continuing the workout regimen for the years to come.

She also noticed that the velocity on her shot has increased thanks to the weight training.

“I think it’s a lot harder now,” Matusz said. “I have better distance with my shot.

I think I can really make the shot from further out now.”

“One of her best goals this season was a free kick from way outside the box,” Pace said. “She has a very powerful shot. I think she has a lot more confidence. She had a little bit of freshman hesitation last year. She doesn’t have it now. She was ready to take over. She feels more comfortable now. She’s really just letting loose now. It’s really impressive.”

Matusz had one aspect to her game that has never waned. She was always faster

than anyone else on the field.

Her speed has also improved since last year.

“I think I can move with the ball much quicker,” Matusz said. “I think I’m just all around faster. So it’s a combination of speed and strength that has helped me.”

Pace Kivelhan said that Matusz is a vocal leader, even though she’s only a sophomore.

“Skyler plays a huge part in our success,” Pace Kivelhan said. “She’s already a leader on the field.”

Not only does Matusz have 15 goals already, but she’s also collected five assists, which means she’s getting her teammates involved as well.

Off the field, Matusz is just a fun loving teenager.

“I love being outgoing,” Matusz said. “I take things very seriously when I’m playing, but I want to make sure that everyone has a smile on their face and that they’re having fun with the game.”

“She’s a lot of fun,” Pace Kivelhan said. “She always has a smile on her face and doing something to make people laugh. She’s quite a character.”

Even though she’s only a sophomore, Matusz already has her sights on the next step.

“I always wanted to play college soccer,” Matusz said.

“Hopefully on the (NCAA) D-I (Division I) level. I have heard from a few schools, but we’ll wait and see.”

“I have no doubt that she’ll go and play D-I soccer somewhere,” Pace Kivelhan said.

The coach should know, having played her college soccer at Rutgers.

With 15 goals in five games, Matusz has already leaped past her total of a year ago.

She also has another total in sight — namely Amber Crispin’s school record for goals in a season with 33. Crispin is the former Observer Female Athlete of the Year recipient who is now playing soccer at

Iona College.

“I think I have a good chance now,” Matusz said. “I know Amber has the record, but I didn’t know the amount.

It’s not too early to think about it. It makes me happy to

know that I’m almost halfway to Amber’s record.”

Asked to assess the local tax impact of paying back principal and interest over the life of a 20-year bond, Mayor Alberto Santos estimated — based on total principal payments projected at $1 million plus $200,000 in interest — the bond could translate to $120 more annually for the average homeowner.

Still, he said, the town has managed to reduce its annual debt service payments over the last three years “by 50%” to the current figure of $3.1 million so, if that trend continues, the bite from the Oval bond may be cushioned somewhat.

“This is the right moment to take on this project,” Santos asserted. “The interest rates are as low as they can get and the Oval makeover certainly rises to the top of our list of priorities since it’s the centerpiece of our municipal recreation facilities.”

Assuming the state Board of Local Finance approves the transaction, the Oval project should be “ready to go to bid” by sometime next month, according to Michael Neglia, the town’s consulting engineer.

And then, Santos said, the town should be in a position to award a contract this coming winter.

The governing body also set in motion another bond ordinance — this one for $6,448,600 — for improvements to the

Dukes St. pumping station to relieve flooding issues affecting residents on the east side of town.

A hearing is slated for Sept. 26.

A “final design” for this project is still about “five to six months” away, Neglia said. And soil borings at the project site need to be done, too, he added, and if all goes well, “we could bid it out sometime next year.”

Another infrastructure job that is pending — resurfacing of Peden Terrace, a hilly, one-block street that runs between Passaic Ave. and Belgrove Drive — is awaiting a decision whether to accept a state Department of Transportation recommendation to use a certain type of “skid-resistant coating” for which DOT is willing to pay $50,000, Neglia said.

Neglia said DOT “has used this coating in the past, but I’m not sure we want to do it. My recommendation may be not to do it. … There are alternatives but I want to make sure they’re acceptable to DOT so they’ll pay for it.”

Aside from the coating to which DOT is partial, the state agency, said Neglia, also has voiced a preference for “stretching it up the hill to the top [of Belgrove]” rather than concentrating it “on the bottom portion” of the roadway to prevent downhill drivers from skidding onto Passaic Ave., a major through-route.

Whatever the town opts to do, Neglia said, it should advise residents of the block who were asked for input before the town agreed to undertake the paving job.

Edward F. Taylor & Janet C. Taylor Edward F. Taylor, D.D.S. (nee Nowicki), passed away July 2017 at the age of 83. He was born in Jersey City to Edward and Joan (nee Liskewicz) Nowicki. His mother remarried Francis A. Taylor and had his name changed to Edward Francis Taylor in 1941. Ed “Eddie” grew up and went to North Arlington High School. He was a talented baseball player, pitching for his high school and college baseball teams.

After high school, Edward served in the Navy as a physician’s assistant and from there decided to pursue a career in dentistry. He received his B.A. degree at Rutgers University and then his D.D.S. degree at Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry in 1963. That same year, “Doc” as he had been affectionately known, opened his dental practice on Ridge Road in North Arlington and practiced there for 29 years. In 1992, he moved his practice to a new medical arts facility on Belleville Turnpike, North Arlington, and practiced there until his retirement.

Doc loved his nearly 50 years of dentistry.

Throughout his professional career, Dr. Edward Taylor held fellowships in the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, and Academy of General Dentistry.

He was actively involved with the New Jersey Dental School Alumni Association for over 30 years, serving as president for two years. He was a faculty member of Fairleigh Dickinson University Dental School, New Jersey Dental School and

Rutgers, UMDNJ. Ed was a member of many organizations including North Arlington Board of Health, Children’s Dental Health Month, Rotary International, and Knights of Columbus.

Janet C. Taylor, Ed’s wife, died January 2017 at the age of 85.

Janet Clara was born in Washington, N.J., to Herbert H. and Lena (nee Vorbach) DeVries. Her mother remarried Charles Smith who adopted Janet.

She grew up in North Arlington and was a high school cheerleader. After graduation, she worked at Monarch Federal Savings and Loan in Kearny and was promoted to the office of secretary. Janet met Doc at his dental practice and shortly after they fell in love. She became Ed’s office manager and efficiently ran the office until their retirement.

Ed and Janet were married in 1978. They had a house built in Warren, where they lived for over 20 years. They enjoyed hosting lobster parties and went on many trips and cruises by themselves and with close friends. In 2012, they sold the dental pactice and retired to The Villages in Florida. Ed and Janet loved and cherished each other, their families,

and friends. They will be greatly missed.

Per their wishes, The Edward F. Taylor, DDS, and Janet C. Taylor scholarship will be established at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine.

Frederick Di Pasquale Frederick Di Pasquale, 103, died Sept. 11.

In any event, Dowie said, “It’s never just a simply shoplifting arrest.” It may start out with that, he said, but often leads to assaults and other types of criminal activity potentially harmful to cops and civilians, not to mention taking more time away from regular police duties.

Santos wondered if the town could require the store owners to employ off-duty officers.

Given the situation, Konopka said if he were chief, “I’d be down here [at the council chambers] every month asking for more cops.

Maybe we should set up a [police] trailer down there, like when the Belleville police had one at K-mart.”

It appears, the mayor said, that company officials “don’t have local issues at heart. It’s very
