By Ron Leir Observer Correspondent EAST NEWARK – hen youngsters showed up for the first day of East Newark summer school earlier this month, they might have been expected to register moping faces.

After all, it was a lovely summer day, with the mercury in the 80s, and the pleasant outdoors beckoning for playtime.

And here they were, stuck indoors, compelled to labor over stubborn English grammar or math problems they had yet to master.

But lo and behold, in the twinkling of an eye, there was excitement and glee when Superintendent/Principal Patrick Martin produced 10 spanking new iPads for classroom use.

Seems that the equipment had been donated by a volunteer teacher aide, Isabella Drzala.

Drzala, who just completed her sophomore year at the Pingry School in Basking Ridge, has been volunteering in East Newark since July 2016, both in summer school and in an after-school remedial program offered during the regular school year.

The 16-year-old has no special educational certifications but her academic credentials speak for themselves: Last year, she was an all-A student and this year, she tacked on As in AP Calculus and Basic Statistics.

So why has she been commuting, via Uber, back and forth between the borough and her Morris County residence to lend a hand?

“I knew that she taught in East Newark where many of the students face challenges in English and math,” Isabella said.

Thus far, during her still formative school tenure, Isabella has found that, “all my teachers have given me a love for learning,” and, as a consequence, “I wanted to challenge myself by extending that love for learning to the East Newark students by teaching them to understand math and English.”

And, feeling that she has derived much benefit from Pingry’s heavy stress on the application of technology in the classroom, Isabella concluded that it made even more sense that she could help foster students’ desire to expand their knowledge through the gift of electronics as a learning tool.

Thus was born the tech project and, to put it in action, Isabella initiated a GoFundMe campaign, in which she enlisted her friends, family friends and her dad’s business associates to make modest contributions.

It took her five days to raise a total of $3,515, which, minus a certain percentage for administrative fees, she took to the Apple Store and, with the application of a store discount for educational use, she acquired the 10 iPads.

When the East Newark youngsters feasted their eyes on the new products, “it was an amazing experience,” said Isabella. “Their faces visibly lit up.”

Martin said the iPads would be a welcome supplement to a limited supply the school currently has had in stock for the past five years.

They are rotated through grades K through 8, two classes at a time, at the teacher’s discretion, he said.

“Sometimes we use them for small groups of students, either for advanced instruction or for students to work on problem areas.”

The school also makes use of laptops, which were also secured five years ago, and it installed a computer lab a decade ago, Martin said.

“We’re now at the point where we’re going to start replacing our older models,” he said.

Around the horn, now on deck

Well, not quite.

A

The newfangled orthotropic deck for the new Rt. 7 Wittpenn Bridge has made a circuitous journey to get to the site in South Kearny.

The deck — first of its kind to be deployed in the Garden State — with a thin steel plate and a series of ribs and floor beams and similar to decks on U.S. battleships – was built

by Vigor LLC at its facilities in Clackamas, Ore., and Vancouver, Wash.

The finished product was shipped out by boat from Washington State on June 6 in five sections with a total weight of nearly 4.9 million pounds.

It entered the first lock of the Panama Canal from the Pacific Ocean on June 28 and proceeded on a projected 16hour trip through the Canal’s six locks before reaching the Caribbean.

From there, it traveled north up the Atlantic Coast of the U.S. The final leg of the journey was up the Hackensack River and the steel deck arrived at the project site near the

Kearny/Jersey City border last week.

The deck will be lifted into place this fall once the tower portion of the new bridge is completed.

The new Rt. 7 bridge, a similar vertical-lift span but bigger in scope that is designed to take more traffic — the existing 1930 bridge has an annual average daily traffic of nearly 50,000 vehicles — is rising just north of the existing bridge.

The estimated $480 million project — which includes new approach ramps, a reconfigured approach to Fish House Road and connections to Rts. 1 & 9 — is due to be completed by 2020.

The existing span is to be demolished after its replacement is up.

In place of the old bridge’s two 10-foot-wide lanes in each direction with no median or shoulder, the new bridge will have wider lanes, shoulders and a median barrier, pedestrian and bicycle accommodation.

It will also double the vertical clearance over the Hackensack River, from 35 to 70 feet.

More about the new deck: It has a thin steel plate and a series of ribs and floor beams.

Actually, the manufacturing

process was developed in Germany in the 1930s and is similar to that used in U.S. battleship decks as well as some types of corrugated cardboard, according to NJDOT.

The five sections of the deck will be assembled at the project site.

2 Kearny cops facing discipline: chief

wo veteran Kearny cops are in for trouble ahead.

Police Chief John Dowie has filed disciplinary charges against them and, if found guilty, they could face as a worst-case scenario dismissal

from the force.

Neither the chief nor Robert Smith, the municipal business administrator, would disclose their identities.

At this point, Smith said, “it’s considered a personnel matter,” so unless and until there is a resolution of the matter, no names will be revealed.

On Tuesday, July 11, the

mayor and Town Council authorized the hiring of Robert A. Verry, a retired South Bound Brook police chief, as hearing officer at the rate of $120 per hour with a $12,000 cap.

Dowie said no date has yet been set for the hearing.

The chief said both cops have been notified as to the charges through their attorneys, which they selected

through a legal protection plan provided through their PBA membership. (The Kearny PBA is not directly paying for their legal fees.)

“We’re now in the discovery phase,” Dowie said.

If and when a formal hearing takes place, a representative of the Fairfield law firm Castano Quigley, the town’s general counsel, will present the case against the two cops and Verry will preside.

Asked what the officers are alleged to have done, Dowie would say only that the case involves “a lot of evidence missing [from the KPD property room],” including drugs.

“My I.A. [Internal Affairs] people have lived with this since last August [2016],” the chief said.

Dowie said that once the department had built what he felt was a solid case against the two officers, he referred the matter to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office for what he hoped would result in a referral to a county grand jury for criminal prosecution.

Instead, he said, the prosecutor’s office returned the file to Kearny.

(The Observer reached out to that office for comment but, as of press time, none was forthcoming.)

So now, Dowie said, he’s using the only other mechanism available to him to take some kind of corrective action, i.e., the disciplinary charges.

He listed the charges as the following: Conduct unbecoming, neglect of duty, failure to perform duty, misuse of public property, standard of conduct violation and general police responsibilities violation.

If found guilty of the charges, Dowie said the officers could face a wide range of penalties, including termination.

Each of the cops has more than 20 years of service with the KPD, Dowie said.

When the initial investigation began, Dowie said, the officers were suspended with pay. That was changed to suspension without pay,

after the charges were drafted, “about a month ago.”

Asked why the town was going to an outside party to hear the case rather than handle the matter internally, B.A. Smith said he felt it was important to have someone with no local connections “to provide due process.”

In his previous experience as B.A. of Washington Township in Gloucester County, Smith said he followed a similar policy.

Smith said he recommended the governing body hire Verry “after I spoke to the town’s labor counsel,” and two possible candidates surfaced, of whom Verry was picked because he’s “a retired police chief and very knowledgeable in this area.”

A LinkedIn account lists Verry’s current enterprise as “educational consultant – police/employee misconduct,” based at Centenary University where he is assistant professor of criminal justice, paralegal studies and political & governmental.

He’s also listed as having served as president of the NJ Internal Affairs Association since 2004.

Verry served as chief of the South Bound Brook PD until his retirement in March 2008.

Two years later, according to nj.com, Verry sued his former employers over unused sick time, claiming they were holding back part of his money as retaliation for him reporting the thenmayor to the county prosecutor for allegedly awarding a no-bid municipal contract to her brother’s firm. He ended up with a cash settlement.

ttention Lyndhurst residents and former residents: Get ready to

party!

The township is celebrating – albeit a bit belatedly – a big milestone … it’s 100th birthday.

And Mayor Robert Giangeruso and a hastily assembled Centennial Committee want you to join in the celebration.

The municipality’s incorporation date is actually May 13, 1917, according to Scott Ackerson, president of the Lyndhurst Historical Society, but township officials had their hands full preparing for the May municipal election so little time, if any, could be devoted to full-fledged planning for the historical event.

Now, however, it’s full steam ahead, Giangeruso asserted, and the Centennial Committee is pressing to put all the pieces together to mark the occasion.

Here’s what has been decided by the committee: The anniversary will be marked during a two-day period, beginning Saturday, Sept. 30, and concluding the next day, Sunday, Oct. 1.

Things will start off with a bang, featuring a parade probably stepping off at around noon on Sept. 30 from Ridge Road and Lake Ave., with staging of marchers along Fifth and Sixth Aves.

Paraders will proceed south on Ridge, turn west on Valley Brook Ave., then north on Stuyvesant Ave. and end at

Court Ave. Further details on what the parade will look like, in terms of possible bands and floats, are still being fleshed out by the committee.

From Court, marchers and spectators will be directed to festivities at Town Hall Park where they’ll be greeted by vendors with multi-ethnic foods, a beer garden, live music from the ‘40s through ‘70s and more.

The day’s events will likely run through the evening, until maybe 9 p.m.

If it rains on Saturday, the parade will take place the next day, Oct. 1, with the same scenario to follow.

If the weather is clear, however, then Sunday will be devoted to a “Fun Day” or “Community Day,” again in Town Hall Park, complete with historically-themed events saluting the township’s past, music by local talent and others, more food trucks, music and booths featuring local civic, fraternal, religious and recreation organizations.

There will also be various types of centennial memorabilia to purchase, including shirts, hats and beer mugs, all inscribed with a uniform Lyndhurst Centennial logo.

Revenue from the sale of souvenirs will help offset the cost of putting on the twoday event. A 50/50 raffle may also be in the works. Private contributions from area industries and citizens will also be solicited. Centennial lawn signs may be designed and marketed. And some “startup” costs will be funded through the municipal budget.

Cats & gosling peacefully coexist

O

n June 6, Len Twist of Kearny’s TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) program for feral felines, found a small gosling trapped in a wire fence at one of the

cat colonies in the meadows.

The bird’s foot was injured, obviously from efforts to free itself. Twist rescued the gosling, patched it up and placed it in one of the

cat shelters where it could recuperate.

Contrary to popular belief, there was no animosity between the species. In fact, the gosling — which Twist

named “Trooper” — was welcomed as a colony member, even eating out of the same bowls as the cats.

One day, though, Trooper was gone, and Twist feared the bird had succumbed to its injuries. But a couple of days later, it was back, “limping down the railroad tracks like Chester from ‘Gunsmoke,’” Twist said.

And it had its entire family in tow. Despite the limp, Trooper appears to be in fine shape.

In a month, Twist noted, it has “grown from the size of a pigeon to that of a small Butterball turkey.”

Probably from all that

nutritious cat food, for the ferals still welcome Trooper and the other geese at the feeding stations.

There reportedly is an argument promoted by some researchers that TNR programs threaten birds because ferals and birds are natural enemies, the former feeding on the latter.

What is happening in Kearny indicates otherwise.

As Twist says, “Why would a cat want to eat a bird when it’s got 9 Lives and Fancy Feast? It’d be like you having a filet mignon in front of you, but you decide to dash out for a White Castle.”

After car crashes, pole catches fire BELLEVILLE —

F

irefighters faced an unusually dangerous incident Thursday, July 13, as a utility pole caught fire, downed several power lines and caused disruptions along Joralemon St., the Belleville Fire Department reported.

The Belleville Fire Department gave the following

wooden pole quickly erupted into flames. Additional help was requested, and a full response of two additional engine companies and a battalion chief were sent to assist.

Firefighters set up precautionary hose lines to protect a pharmacy and a luncheonette. A gas station and lumber company were also shut down and evacuated, also.

No civilians or firefighters were injured as a result of the fire.

The pharmacy and luncheonette remained closed while utility company representatives evaluated the damage from the fire.

Power was restored to the grid, allowing nearby businesses to remain open.

However, extensive damage

was done to telephone, power and cable lines. Area residents and businesses were left without telephone service, Internet access and cable TV. Contractors will be working to restore services to those customers affected.

There is no estimation as to when full service would be restored (as of press time.)

The fire was apparently

caused by a car crashing into a cable at the pole, according to PSE&G spokeswoman Brooke Houston. “ … in Belleville, a car hit a cable that runs from the ground to the transformer at the top of the pole. This damage caused the cable to arc, which ignited the pole,” Houston said.

10% OFF description of the fire: Several 9-1-1 calls were received that day (July 13) at around 12:30 p.m., reporting smoke coming from a utility pole in front of 530 Joralemon St. Two alert, off-duty firefighters noticed the fire and alerted headquarters to dispatch a company to check conditions.

Truck 1 responded and arrived within two minutes. On scene, firefighters observed high-voltage power wires smoldering inside a conduit attached to the utility pole.

They cordoned off the area, and as conditions worsened, had to evacuate nearby businesses and shut down the roadway.

Firefighters also stretched additional hoses to protect the structures and a gas station.

On ‘Amistad,’ the World Series, more

By Kevin Canessa Every so often, you sit down, whether it’s at home at the dining room table, or on the couch — or maybe it’s on the bus or at the office — and you read a column that yours truly wrote. For some, it’s easy to relate to what we write because, perhaps, you’ve known me for a long time.

For others, maybe it’s not so easy, and you have to wonder who this guy is that writes about St. Anthony’s, life in Kearny or a plethora of other topics every three weeks or so.

So this week, for a change, the column will be a Top 5 list of sorts — five things about me that may be of interest … or may be a complete and utter schnooze fest. So, here it goes.

5. I WAS BORN in Christ Hospital, Jersey City, let’s just say a long time ago — in fact, exactly six weeks after Gerald R. Ford became president of the United States following the resignation of Richard Milhous Nixon. The day I was born, apparently, my biological father was at Shea Stadium watching … the Yankees play. This may give you an idea what the year was (Ron Leir, this trivia is for you!)

4. BACK IN 1997, the movie “Amistad” was being filmed in Newport, R.I., whilst I was a

senior at Salve Regina University. One of my classmates and friends was in charge of hiring security to “watch over” the set when filming was stopped.

All we had to do (he hired me, at $22 an hour in 1997) was ensure no one destroyed the makeshift courthouse that had been built on a hill in downtown Newport. It was winter, so we sat in our cars.

Once an hour, a walk-around with a flashlight to ensure no one was peeing on the set, either. Because yes, that happened a lot, since Newport has more bars per square mile than any other municipality on this continent — or, at least that was that case 20 years ago.

3. BACK IN 1986, when the Boston Red Sox went up in the World Series 3 to 2 after a win in Game 5, my mother was offered tickets to both Game 6 and 7 back at Shea Stadium. In Game 6, with the Red Sox up 5-3 in the bottom of the 10th inning, with 2 out and nobody on base, I started to get up out of my seat, gathered the blanket that had kept me warm most of the night — and tried to head for the ramp to the Shea runway to street level. We were sitting in leftfield in the upper deck.

“Sit down now!” my mother screamed at me. “This isn’t over.”

Oh, and the best thing — the folks who gave her tickets for the following night (which turned into two nights later because of rain) asked for the tickets back.

She refused.

2. WHEN I LIVED in Port St. Lucie, Fla., I worked, for a time, at a daily newspaper down there, as a contractor.

In the time I was there, I got to interview celebrities who were coming to a local theater for shows — it’s called the Sunrise Theater — and they often got big name acts.

Among the celebs I interviewed, the most enjoyable was Neil Sedaka. But the two most intriguing ones involved Richard Simmons and Bill Cosby.

But it’s not because of who they are. It’s because after interviewing Simmons, he dropped off the planet not too long after — and shortly after interviewing Cosby, well, unless you were without TV or Internet, you know what happened to him.

1. WHEN I WAS 19, I was an intern at nearby local, daily publication. In the summer of 1994, I was assigned to cover the City of Bayonne. While I was beginning to learn to be a better writer, I had no experience, really, covering bigticket happenings. That year, there was a mayoral runoff

election in the city between Neil DeSena (who died in 2015) and Lenoard P. Kiczek (who wound up serving just one term.)

My editor at the time, Joseph J. Casey Jr., God rest his soul, sent me on Election Day to the Kiczek campaign’s headquarters — to cover the man who was to lose the election. Well, as luck would have it, Casey sent me to the wrong campaign, because Kiczek won the election, a four-year term as the city’s CEO. I was by myself. I shook, literally. I had no clue how to handle this. In the past, all I’d have to do was collect the results and report them back to Peter Weiss, God rest his soul, by telephone.

When I got back to the office, it turned out I had 30 minutes to write a 19-inch story. That’s about 1,000 words.

“What do I do?” I asked Casey.

“Write about the damn victory and tell the readers what they said!”

Somehow, I did. And for the first time in my career, I was “above the fold” in three editions of the newspaper.

To this very day, that story I wrote in 1994, shaped me into the writer I am in 2017 —23 years later.

KPD: Understaffed and under pressure

lsewhere in this week’s Observer is an article by my colleague Ron Leir reporting the hiring of 12 new Kearny police recruits — which will bring the department up to 107 officers when the rookies complete their

academy training in December.

Leir also cites KPD Chief John Dowie, who noted that if calls for service continue at the current rate, the 2017 endof-year total will be significantly higher than 2016’s.

Each week, your correspondent sits down with the chief to obtain information for the blotter — and

we’ll get to those reports later — but last week’s meeting also produced some disquieting statistics concerning the current workload.

“As of Friday (July 14),” Dowie noted, the KPD had handled “1,500 more jobs” than had been recorded by July 14, 2016. “So far this year,” he said, “the total stands at 17,100, which puts us on track for 32,000-33,000 for 2017.”

According to Dowie, the state had recommended a total of just 92 officers for the KPD, “but the mayor and Council saw fit” to increase it. The chief himself recommends a minimum of 110.

Ten years ago, he said, the KPD was at a high of 122 officers and the annual workload was 23,000-24,000 jobs.

Today, the number of arrests and calls for service are “skyrocketing.”

On the night of Saturday, July 8, in less than a two-hour period, KPD officers made five arrests — which necessitated the calling in of off-duty cops because everyone else was busy with bookings and required paperwork for each incident.

On that same night, Dowie said, the 6 p.m. - 6 a.m. shift answered 75 documented calls for service (e.g., medical, domestic, traffic complaints, MV accidents, etc.)

The July 8 arrest tsunami began at 9 p.m., when Walmart security advised that two individuals suspected of past thefts of bicycles from an outdoor display were back. Officer David Bush responded and spotted one of the men in front of the store with a backpack from which protruded a pair of bolt cutters, police said. (The bikes are bolted to the display.)

Jason Rodrigues, Jonathan Dowie and Sgt. Chris Levchak detained, searched and arrested the suspect on charges of shoplifting, possession of a prescription drug (four cyclobenzaprine pills), possession of drug paraphernalia and of burglary tools.

At headquarters, police said, the man gave his name as Dashon Ragland, but a fingerprint check showed him to be Sean Gary, 48, of Newark, who was then also charged with hindering apprehension — and on an Essex County Sheriff’s no-bail burglary warrant.

Also taken into custody near Walmart was Gary’s alleged co-conspirator, Donald Coleman, 52, of Newark, who had attempted to flee the area, police said.

Coleman was charged with shoplifting, CDS possession (one Xanax pill) and on two shoplifting warrants: Bloomfield, $315; Elizabeth, $150.

••• At 9:30 p.m., responding to a report of a male-female fight at Kearny and Johnston Aves., Officers Richard Pawlowski and Chris Manolis sorted out the disturbance but also recognized William Kearney, 22, of Kearny, and arrested him on a $150 town traffic warrant.

Now the matter goes to the township mayor and council for their consideration and, if the governing body gives its consent, it will likely lead to the pitching of a redevelopment plan by a prospective developer.

Carjacking, birthday ‘celebrant’: HPD A

resident of one of Harrison’s new developments was the victim of a carjacking on Tuesday, July 11, according to the HPD. Police said the incident occurred at about 11 a.m. after the victim, a 24-year-old man from the Harrison Station complex near the PATH station, parked his grey Mitsubishi Galant near his residence.

The victim told officers he was approached from behind by two men, one of whom grabbed his cell phone from his hands and pulled his arms behind his back, while the bandit’s accomplice took his car keys from his front pocket.

Then, police said, the victim felt what he believed to be a gun being held against his back and was forced back to his car where one of the suspects began to search the vehicle.

While that suspect was so occupied, police said the victim punched the suspect who was holding him and

ran toward the entrance to 330 Cifelli Drive while being pursued by one of the bandits, which was captured on a nearby video camera.

Police said the victim managed to elude his pursuer and called for help.

Police said the victim appears to have been “targeted by known assailants.”

One suspect was described as a stocky Latino, about 5-feet-8, with short black hair and a full beard, wearing a light blue T-shirt and ripped jeans.

The other suspect was listed as a bald white man.

Both suspects fled west on Cifelli Drive in the victim’s Mitsubishi, police said.

The incident remains under investigation, police said.

In an unrelated incident during the Independence Day holiday, police said they responded, at 2:21 a.m., to the 400 block of Harrison Ave., on a report of someone described as an older white man wearing

Police said the responding officer found no one matching that description but, after proceeding east along Harrison Ave. to Manor Ave., the officer observed three Kearny police cars pulled over near the intersection.

There, police said, KPD Officers Rich Poplaski, Michael Gontarczuk and David Bush had stopped Harrison resident Darren P. Donnelly – who had just turned 58 that day – on the sidewalk.

Donnelly matched the description called in previously to the HPD dispatcher, police said.

Police said the responding HPD officer noticed a large knife protruding from the rear of Donnelly’s shorts. The offic-

er immediately disarmed him and placed him under arrest.

A search incident to arrest resulted in the discovery of a silver Sauer & Suhl handgun, loaded with one .25-caliber round, in Donnelly’s right shorts pocket, along with the gun’s magazine which contained an additional six, .25-caliber rounds, police said.

Also found on the arrestee, according to police, were the following: a black-and-silver Mini-Tac knife concealed in a sheath around Donnelly’s neck under his shirt; a black-andsilver Urban Dart triangular blade knife hidden in a sheath clipped inside the waistband of his shorts; a red Snap-On pocket knife clipped to his left shorts pocket, along with a silver Gerber money clip with

a concealed razor blade in his left shorts pocket; and a onepiece knife concealed in his brown leather belt.

Police said they also found these items: a white Medtainer jar containing a green leafy vegetation believed to be marijuana; a purple jar labeled “Pot of Gold” with suspected marijuana; and a clear green plastic bag with three blue cylinder-shaped unmarked pills believed to be Roxicodone, all recovered from the suspect’s rear shorts pocket.

Donnelly was taken to HPD HQ for booking and transported to the Hudson County Jail in South Kearny to await court action on charges of possession of weapons and possession of CDS. – Ron Leir

Kearny Superintendent of Schools Patricia Blood has talked about the possibility of bringing back some or all of the 14 non-tenured teachers whose appointments were not renewed at the end of the school year if sufficient supplemental state school aid were received in a timely manner.

Whether that will happen could not be learned as of press time.

Here are the special school aid numbers for Hudson County districts: • Kearny will end up with $33.1 million in state aid for the 2017-2018 school year, up by $2.19 million from last school year, or a 7.08% increase.

• Harrison will net $25.4 million, up by $41,405 from last school year or a 0.16% increase.

• East Newark will pocket

$3.5 million, up by $152,406 from last school year or a 4.45% increase.

Here are the results for local Bergen County districts: • North Arlington will get $2.18 million, up by $373,262 from last school year or a 20.5% increase.

• Lyndhurst will receive $2.09 million, up by $45,000 from last school year or a 2.19% increase.

And here are the local Essex County school figures: • Belleville will see $26.9 million, up by $1.01 million from last school or a 3.91% increase.

Santa, JWCA: Toys in July KEARNY – Much to the surprise and delight of those driving past Kearny’s Girl Scout House on Saturday, July 8, Santa’s summer vacation plans this year included a stop in Kearny. Taking a break from the North Pole, Santa joined the Junior Woman’s Club of Arlington to help kick off the annual Christmas in July Toy Drive.

Mele Kalikimaka was the theme of the day as children and their families were invited to participate in several “cool weather with a tropical twist” themed arts and crafts stations, to toss water balloons and to enjoy a Popsicle or two.

In the midst of all the fun, a steady stream of local residents and businesses dropped off donations of more than 150 new toys and books that the JWCA will distribute to local children in December.

The club’s goal is to provide each child with an item from

their wish list, something they can wear, something their parent or guardian has identified as a need — and at least one age appropriate book.

The JWCA Toy Drive runs through July 31 with several donation boxes placed in local businesses. Donations of new unwrapped toys, games or books for ages 2 to 16 can be dropped off at Kearny Bank (614 Kearny Ave.), Arlington Realty (130 Midland Ave.) and World Martial Arts Academy of Kearny (844 Kearny Ave.) during their regular business hours.

North Arlington Junior Little League wins District 5 title The last time North Arlington Little League captured a District 5 banner was 1960.

“That’s pretty far back,” said Joe Witt, the manager of the North Arlington Little League Junior All-Star team, filled with standout players ages 13 and 14.

Witt has been the manager of the North Arlington All-Stars over the last couple of years.

Witt, a veteran of coaching Little League teams in his hometown of Kearny and in neighboring North Arlington, did a fine job of keeping the team together after they lost in the District 5 title game.

“The nucleus has been together for a long time,” Witt said. “That’s the way it works. We got lucky, too. This group here has a good time together as well. We just put it together and let the kids play. It’s like a family.”

But Witt knows that there is a key to success in postseason play.

“We practice every day,” Witt said. “It’s the only way to get better. We make it fun for them, but they know that there’s going to be a lot of learning baseball.

We set the environment

that they know what to expect.”

So going into last week’s District 5 All-Star tournament, Witt knew his team had a chance to win the district banner despite the fact that North Arlington had not claimed the title in more than 50 years.

“We knew that we had a chance to win because we finished second last year,” Witt said. “We had a good combination of kids from last year and others.”

The North Arlington All-Stars won 16 straight games in the regular season and then rolled through the District 5 tournament, bringing home the first championship in more than five decades.

The North Arlington All-Stars then continued on in the Section 2 tourney, defeating Bayonne and Fort Lee in consecutive games to advance to one game of the state championship round.

“Everyone has contributed in one way or another,” Witt said. “We have a good group of kids. There’s never any infighting. They all love baseball and they all love see VIEW page

atalie Osorio is a 12-year-old Kearny resident who attends Lincoln School.

Young Natalie also loves the game of basketball.

She already has aspirations of the future.

“I want to play here,” Osorio said in the Kearny High School gymnasium last week.

“I know it’s what I want to do.”

So to become a better player, Osorio decided to attend the Kearny High School Girls’ Basketball Camp.

“I learned how to handle the ball the right way,” Osorio

said. “It really encourages me to play basketball more.”

There’s another reason.

Osorio likes the idea that there were only girls at the camp organized by Kearny High head girls’ basketball coach Jody Hill.

“It makes it easier for me,” Osorio said. “I came to this camp because there were no boys.”

“It helps your confidence,” said 14-year-old Catherine Raftery, the great niece of the legendary player, coach and announcer Bill Raftery. “I’ve been getting better.”

Hill was impressed with the number of younger kids she had in the camp. Of the 91 or so young women who attended the week-long instruc-

tional camp, 40 were 10 years old and younger. And 30 or so signed up on the first day of camp without prior registration.

“It’s the first year that we had that,” Hill said of the of the younger turnout. “I feel like we’re making a transition.

The word has spread about the camp and the players have really started young. And the talent level is there. That really impressed me so much. I can’t imagine what they will be like when they’re eighth graders.”

Hill said that the camp’s instructional staff did a ton of teaching during the week.

Leading the way is Joey Witt, the coach’s son. The right-hander allowed just two hits and one run in the District 5 tournament and struck out 22.

“He throws pretty hard,” Witt said of his son. “He also has a good curveball.”

Right-hander Michael Roman, who will be a sophomore at North Arlington High, is more of a control pitcher.

“He throws strikes,” Witt said. “He’s very economical.”

Righty Pete Ziakos is a big kid who throws hard. Enrique Dagger used to attend Queen of Peace, which has now closed. All four of the North Arlington pitchers are 14 years old.

The catcher is Tony Alho, who is also an excellent soccer and basketball player.

“Tony’s our No. 3 hitter,” Witt said of Alho. “He can flat out hit. He’s a big, strong kid.”

First base is handled by A.J. Bradley, who is the team’s clean-up hitter and a 13-year-old player.

“He has good power,” Witt said of the eighth grader Bradley.

Second base is split between Donovan Ortiz and Tyler McGeehan.

“Donovan is a very slick fielder,” Witt said. “Tyler is our all-purpose player. He can play second base, shortstop, the outfield or pitcher.

He’s just an athlete.”

Witt and Roman share the shortstop duties when the other is pitching.

The third baseman is Jared Velazquez, a 14-year-old freshman at North Arlington High.

“He’s a first baseman by trade who moved across to play third for us,” Witt said.

“He’s done very well.”

The left fielder is Ziakos, who Witt called “one of the best outfielders around.”

The centerfield duties are shared between a pair of 13-year-olds in Ryan Cherichella and Oscar Torres.

“They show the promise of the program,” Witt said.

Right field is shared by Dagger, Andrew Almeida, who will attend St. Peter’s Prep and Jimmy Pezzuta.

Witt is joined by assistant coaches Lou Velazquez and Tony Alho Sr. Witt was asked if he ever gets tired coaching youth baseball.

“I talked to my wife and told her that I always want to be a part of coaching,” Witt said. “I can’t sit in the stands and watch. It’s been fun. Coaching has given me a lot of thrills, especially now that Joey is doing so well.”

Joe Witt learned from a master. His father was a respected Little League coach for ages.

“I never had a better coach in my life,” Witt said of his father.

People are beginning to say the same thing about the son as well.

New NA coach D’Andrea leads youngsters through camp

arcello D’Andrea knew that this year’s North Arlington basketball camp was going to be a little different than others.

Mainly because D’Andrea is now in charge, going from assistant coach to the new head coach with the Viking varsity.

“Honestly, there’s going to

be transition when there’s a new coach, going from one to the other,” said D’Andrea, who replaces Rich Corsetto. “But I’m a pretty straight forward guy. I’ve been here for three years and I think the kids can identify with me and I can identify with the kids. I’ve been around long enough that they know me.”

Council finalizes Oval plans

By Ron Leir Observer Correspondent KEARNY — After months of haggling over fencing, configuration of playing areas, lighting and other variables, members of the Kearny governing body are on the same page.

Last Tuesday, they came to an agreement on the final design plan for the remake of the Gunnell Oval recreational complex.

It’s not the one that Michael Neglia, the town’s consulting engineer, prefers but he’ll live with the majority’s choice of the socalled Plan B. (Neglia said he was partial to what he characterized as the “symmetry” of the Plan A field layout.)

Especially since the mayor and Town Council voted to pay Neglia Engineering $296,977 for what Mayor Alberto Santos explained was “for both the continued modifications Neglia has made to date, as well as completion of design specs in accordance with the council’s approval Tuesday night, in order for the town to go out to bid on this project by October.”

Neglia has projected a price tag of $25 million for the whole shebang: raising the site out of a flood zone, installing a drainage system including pump station – which Neglia predicted, would be “the largest in the Kearny system” – to divert excess storm water into the nearby Kearny Marsh, turfing much of the playing surfaces, putting in a new walking path and parking areas, lighting, security cameras, centralized bathrooms, concession stand and other improvements.

Two key distinctions of Plan B are that the large-size soccer field will be somewhat smaller than the one pitched for the Plan A design – it will be 115 yards-long (versus 120 yards in Plan A) – and there will be no portable/temporary fencing to segregate overlapping baseball/soccer fields.

Instead, a Plan B feature is that each field

will be self-contained with permanent fencing circumscribing it.

A violation of Neglia’s symmetry principle occurs in Plan B with a couple of the Pony League’s right field dimensions having to be shrunk, one measuring only 225 feet to the foul pole and another, just 185 feet, but, as Second Ward Councilman Rich Konopka noted, that oddity could end up favoring lefty batters, of whom his son is one, he noted.

Neglia acknowledged that, given Plan B’s baseball fields’ configuration, “there are going to be foul balls hit in the walking path and parking lots, but I don’t think it’s going to a significant impact.”

In response to a petition signed by residents of E. Midland Ave., which borders one section of the Oval, Plan B calls for lighting focused only on the “interior” of the complex; therefore, leaving unlit two smaller-size soccer fields, a girls softball field and two minor league baseball fields.

The mayor had been a proponent of Plan A with the larger-size soccer field but, in the end, allowed himself to be persuaded it would be a good compromise – if the town acted soon to “light the back of Harvey Field” to provide backup playing space for “more than 1,000 participants” in private soccer leagues that get town permits from the Rec Department to play in Kearny.

By Neglia’s estimate, that project could run in the area of $600,000. The engineer reminded the mayor that, “there’s also baseball fields back there” and the lights “would go a long way to help the overflow.”

One group of recreational enthusiasts who figure to be frustrated by plans for the Oval makeover are folks who kayak in the Kearny Marsh. Neglia said fencing will be installed at certain points to block access to paths through the Oval leading to the marsh which, Santos said, is under the jurisdiction of the N.J. Sports & Exposition Authority.

“To see the joy in the kids’ eyes,” said D’Andrea, who was coaching in the North Arlington Recreation department for a decade before joining forces with Corsetto and the high school varsity three years ago.

“That’s what it’s all about. We want to build on that. I love seeing the younger kids get excited.

Added D’Andrea, “What we try to do is get the kids involved at a younger age.

That’s what we tried to do with the Rec department. We wanted to develop a level of trust through the Rec. It makes my job a lot easier. I think it shows that we’re going in the right direction.”

D’Andrea said that he was fortunate to surround himself with good assistants like George Rotondo and Rotondo’s son Anthony as well as Bobby Crudele.

“They are good basketball people,” D’Andrea said. “From a teaching aspect, there are none better.”

D’Andrea also credits the North Arlington parents for their support through the transition.

“The parents are taking a proactive approach when it comes to basketball and their kids,” D’Andrea said. “It’s a complete community involvement.”

There was a whole bunch of learning going on inside the high school gym.

Sean Manzo is a 12-year-

old aspiring point guard who will enter seventh grade at the North Arlington Middle School. He had perhaps the best approach of anyone in attendance.

“I know now I have to see everything better in the open court,” Manzo said without hesitation. “I’m a point guard and I have to learn that. It helped me a lot.”

Manzo said that he enjoyed himself throughout the week.

“It was a lot of fun,” Manzo said. “I especially liked the competitions at the end of camp. Overall, it helped me become a better player.”

Justin Bunnell is a 10-yearold who learned about one particular important aspect of the game.

“I learned how to play manto-man defense,” Bunnell said.

“I learned how to get low and shuffle my feet.”

Bunnell, who will be in fifth grade at Roosevelt School in the fall, also enjoyed himself.

“I think it really helped me to become a better basketball player,” Bunnell said. “It helped me a lot.”

Ian Crudele is the 11-yearold son of coach Bobby. Ian is headed to sixth grade at the Middle School.

“I learned how to play zone defense,” Ian Crudele said.

“I learned I had to keep my hands up and shuffle my feet.

I feel like I’m ready to play this season.”

Archdiocesan schools support special kids F

or decades, Catholic schools have worked with parents of specialneeds children to provide learning support. However, some parents of children with learning disabilities have expressed sadness that a Catholic education was not available to their sons and daughters. This was due, in part, to the lack of support services necessary to sufficiently accommodate children with special needs.

To address this concern to provide an equal education opportunity to more students with special needs, Archdiocese of Newark officials and the office of the superintendent of schools, have created a task force consisting of school administrators, teachers and learning consultants, to design a universal, school-wide plan to support students with special needs, including those with Down’s Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorders such as Asperger’s Syndrome.

After several years of research, the task force released the archdiocesan special education initiative. And thanks to a grant of $50,000 from Jersey City-based Goya Foods, the archdiocese launched the program this past school year, and implemented the support services in all Catholic schools throughout Bergen, Essex,

“I’m more confident now going up against bigger players,” Shane Crudele said. “I can shoot it.”

Liam Stanley is also eight years old.

“I learned how to be aggressive,” Stanley said. “It’s important to be aggressive, especially when I get mad.

That’s when I get more aggressive.”

Sure enough.

Jaivon Aquino is a 13-yearold player in the Middle School with a lot of promise.

“I learned how to play better offense,” Aquino said. “I learned that if you pass the ball more, you can get more

Eileen O’Neill, the archdiocesan coordinator of special education, is responsible for overseeing the initiative throughout the four counties, and is building relationships with parents, teachers and administrators. One of her most vital tasks is to train staff how to use the Response to Intervention (RTI) system.

O’Neill explains, “RTI is a systematic method to identify struggling students early in order to identify the student’s needs and provide interventions immediately. I am so happy at the response I have received and how the schools are using this approach.”

O’Neill also confirmed that Archdiocesan schools continue to expand their ability to use the RTI system effectively through teacher training and program development. This helps provide comprehensive services to all students.

If it is determined a student has special needs after implementing RTI, a special education teacher from the school will meet with the Child Study Team and the parents of the special needs child.

Together, they will develop a detailed individualized service plan (ISP) to help the child learn and grow at a pace that is appropriate to his or her needs. The evolution of the ISP is critical to the academic success of the

The promising talk is sweet music to D’Andrea’s ears.

“That’s why we do it,” D’Andrea said. “We want the kids to learn and to have fun.

We’re laying down building blocks now. If the kids are buying into the system, then we’re doing our job. If the little kids can take one or two things from camp and use it down the line, then we’ve done our job. I like basketball and I like teaching basketball.

I think the kids like basketball as well. Our numbers (in the camp) are improving every year. We just want to keep it going in the right direction.”

Although each ISP is customized specifically for each child, many of them include resource room learning.

Each day, a special education teacher will spend one class period — 35-45 minutes —working with the student in a one-to-one environment.

This allows the teacher and student to focus on areas of success and areas where more support is needed.

Overall, the special education initiative has been positively received by school administrators, principals, teachers and staff.

“The addition of the position of Coordinator of K-12 Special Education has been an asset to the Archdiocese of Newark,” said Margaret Dames, secretary for education and superintendent of schools. “But most importantly, it is how the position has affected teachers, helping them to understand what they can do for our

special children, and it has assisted our students to practice the Catholic faith and simultaneously learn to succeed socially and academically.”

The special education initiative is still in its early stages, and although it has had great success, the archdiocese is aware of the challenges that still need to be addressed, and will continue to provide additional resources in order to deliver the best possible learning experience for students with special needs.

A brief look at how Lyndhurst came to be ...

Maybe we could rename some of those streets.”

Also, he added, the anniversary celebration could be the appropriate time for Lyndhurst to consider adopting a “a new coat of arms” for the township.

Committee member Amelia Jarvis said the group needed to come up with an appropriate design/logo for a banner promoting the centennial that could be draped across Ridge and Valley Brook to make locals aware of the upcoming events.

Ackerson displayed a banner and T-shirt that the historical society had devised for the Lyndhurst Little Red Schoolhouse, the Riverside Ave. structure that dates from 1893 as potential models for the township’s creations.

He reminded the commit-

tee that the township had buried a time capsule at the schoolhouse site 25 years ago and that possibly a new one could be placed there to be unearthed at some future date but no one seemed eager to pursue that idea.

Scardino said he is creating a Facebook page to help promote the celebration and invited his colleagues to submit ideas.

Committee members are: Mayor Robert Giangeruso, Commissioner Tom DiMaggio, Pat Senese, Evelyn Pezzolla, Scott Ackerson, Robert Goetz, Amelia Jarvis, Anny Scardino, Louis Stellato Jr., Donald Spagnuolo, Kevin Cuneo and Anthony J. Scardino.

Its next scheduled meeting is Wednesday, July 26, at 4:30 p.m., in the commissioners’ caucus room at the Municipal Building.
