MASSIVE PORTION OF A TREE fell onto 875 Devon St., Kearny, Friday morning, July 7. When it fell, it brought wires down with it that led to a small basement fire at 873 Devon St. Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Viscuso said his crew managed to quickly extinguish the fire — and stop it from spreading to upper floors. ‘The guys did a tremendous job,’ he said, noting there were no injuries. It’s not clear how or why the branches fell.

I

n the cemetery of the Belleville Dutch Reformed Church, at Main and Rutgers Sts., stands an impressive monument bearing on bronze plaques the names of 68 Revolutionary War veterans buried in the churchyard.

On July 4, as is done every year at the township’s Independence Day celebration, each of the names is read aloud, in a roll call honoring their military service. We have attended the event several times and have always been deeply moved — by the roll call, the singing of the National Anthem, the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, the raising of the 13-star American flag and the prayers for our nation (this year led by the Rev. Ivan Sciberras, pastor of St. Peter’s Church, Belleville).

But perhaps most moving of all is the obvious respect displayed by the scores of people, from children to senior citizens, who fill the tiny cemetery, their presence a tribute not only to those whose names are read but to all who have served our country, and to the country itself. For July 4 marks both a Declaration of Independence and the preservation of that freedom over the centuries.

The day is also, by the way, this township’s birthday.

On July 4, 1797, what had been been called, unofficially, the village of Second River officially became Belleville. Happy 220th!

We never knew that until last week. But then, every time we visit the historic

churchyard, we learn something new. At this year’s ceremony, our attention was caught by a small tombstone located just to the south of the large Revolution veterans’ monument. Next to it stands a statue of an American eagle, and in front is a cannonball.

Brown, and two brothers also fought at Connecticut Farms, and they brought his body home to Belleville.

Thing is, the tombstone does not mark Brown’s actual grave. As with many of the centuries’ old burials, records have been lost. As have original headstones. It is not known exactly where in the cemetery he lies. But the inscription is accurate.

We don’t know if the Brits ever got any cattle, though, because their commander decided to head up to Bergen County instead.

According to www. revolutionarywarnewjersey. com, British casualties at the Battle of Second River included eight men killed, 19 wounded, 10 missing, and five taken prisoner. Only

two Americans died. Alas, we know the name of just one, Pvt. Benjamin Salter of the Morris County Militia, killed in action in Belleville in the second day of fighting.

Noted Perrone, “The American position on that day was located along what is now Mill St. between Union and Franklin Aves.”

Like Pvt. Hornblower,

Salter “would have been buried there in an unmarked grave on or alongside the battlefield.”

History, dear readers, is all around us. And sometimes literally under our feet.

Think about that once in a while.

War graves. In Brown’s case, this was especially crucial, for as Perrone explained, at some point during the war, “Brown’s stone was smashed by British loyalists.”

Obviously, not everyone in our area believed in Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

From Perrone, we also learned about Pvt. Joseph Hornblower, the first soldier from Belleville to die in the Revolution. Perrone noted that only recently had the date of death, April 4, 1777, been confirmed. Aged 21, he was killed in action at the Battle of Quibbletown (a section of Piscataway).

Perrone wrote: “Joseph was born in 1756 in the Hornblower home adjacent to the old Dutch Reformed Church … He was the eldest son of Josiah and Elizabeth Hornblower. His father, Josiah, assembled the first steam engine in America, served as Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly during the war and after the war served in the Continental Congress and worked on the passage of

the U.S. Constitution.”

Unlike Hermanus Brown, Joseph Hornblower never made it home to Belleville.

Perrone said he “was most likely buried in an unmarked grave on or near the battlefield, as was the practice at the time.”

The most dramatic part of the Belleville ceremony is the 21-gun salute — the gun being a cannon, fired 21 times. We often wonder what those area residents who are unaware of the tradition think is happening.

Are there 911 calls asking if Belleville is at war?

In 1777, it was. On Sept.

12-14 of that year, the town was the scene of the Battle of Second River. An estimated 600 British troops, intent on stealing cattle for food, marched down what is now the Belleville Pike, set up cannons on the eastern side of the Passaic River and bombarded the Belleville shoreline, including the Dutch Reformed Church.

The American militiamen managed to hold them off for a while but eventually withdrew westward,

A pathway to possible citizenship

hosting a citizenship clinic run by We Are One New Jersey – Hudson County Center, a nonprofit that provides social and legal services to working families.

Through a translator, Rodrigues, 64, said he’s been living in the U.S. with his wife and two now-grown children (they are citizens) – for 27 years since coming from his native Portugal where he worked as a police officer.

He has been postponing applying for citizenship until now.

A Portuguese couple, Maria and Jose Luis, have spent the past 34 years in the U.S. and they, too, said they figured they could get by without going through the process but when they read in the newspaper about the clinic, they re-assessed their situation, a translator related.

And three members of the Rodriguez family, originally from Ecuador, came, also in search of citizenship. A woman who preferred not to give her full name said, through a translator, that she had brought her parents and a brother for that purpose. She said that her parents have lived in the U.S. for 18 years and her brother, 19 years, and that she was born here.

“It’s very important,” the woman said, “with all the immigration problems. They need it now.”

With all of the uncertainty now attached to U.S. immigration policy, a lot of

foreign-born folks are now taking action to protect themselves.

Kearny Councilman Peter Santana, who came to the Portuguese center to volunteer, said that people “were lining up as early as 7 a.m.” to take advantage of the 9:30 a.m. clinic.

“By 10:30,” Santana said, “there were members of 33 families being processed.”

Clinic organizers – like volunteer Maria do Carmo Pereira – a veteran campaigner who has led naturalization drives since the 1980s – expected a heavy response since, according to the councilman, “more than two dozen people had called the Portuguese Association in advance but also there were additional calls made to We Are One New Jersey.”

And the clinic, operating on the second floor of the PCA building, was more than ready to receive them.

Once an applicant signed in, he or she was directed through a series of “stations” – at one table, staffers asked applicants for certain types of background information; at another, they outlined eligibility criteria for an application fee waiver or hardship petition; a third offered a final legal review of an application; and a fourth arranged for scanning and packaging an application.

Clara Maass: ER upgrade in the works

By Ron Leir ronleir423@gmail.com BELLEVILLE – lara Maass Medical Center / RWJ Barnabas Health has been greenlighted to undertake additions and alterations to its emergency room by the Belleville Zoning Board of Adjustment.

This project comes on the heels of another infrastructure improvement with April’s opening of an 87,000-square foot building housing a new main entrance and lobby, patient registration area, retail pharmacy and new 32-bed ICU with private rooms.

How the new construction will factor into Belleville’s efforts to assess – and tax – parts of the hospital property remains to be seen. Litigation on the tax issue is ongoing.

At the July 6 zoning hearing, the hospital, represented by local attorney Robert Gaccione, presented its application for site plan review and bulk variances in support of physical changes to the ER. Its chief witness, Dominic Segalla, hospital COO/CFO, told the zoning commissioners that the proposed modifications to the ER will help the hospital improve its delivery service to the ER’s pediatrics and “behaviorial (mental) health” patients.

Of the approximately 80,000 persons seen annually at the ER, about 20,000 are pediatrics cases and about 10,000 are behavioral health patients, Segalla said.

Currently, Segalla said, those two categories of clients “are commingled in one area”

and the hospital would prefer to separate one from the other.

Additional beds to be installed in that section of the ER dealing with mental patients will be used for “observation” of those patients rather than for “admission,” he said.

The project will increase the number of ER pediatrics beds, from five to 13 plus 10 new “treatment/observation” beds, and will raise the number of ER behavioral health beds, from three to nine, of which the six new beds will be in a “controlled environment.” The hospital is also creating a 23-bed “observation unit” in the neighboring recently completed Medical Office building.

When those patients come into the ER, they are searched for any items that could end up being harmful to themselves and/or others, Segalla said.

Part of the zoning board’s discussion on the application covered provision for temporary parkers outside the ER. Mario Ianelli, the project’s site manager, told the board that the hospital wanted to “reverse the flow of traffic to have the ‘drop-off’ on the passenger side,” so as not to conflict with ambulances en route to or from the ER. Of the daily average of 200 to 225 ER visitors, an average of 30 to 35 arrive via EMS, according to Segalla.

To accommodate drivers dropping off infirm patients at the ER, the hospital offered assurances that it would reserve four curbside paral-

lel parking spaces for that purpose.

Additionally, space would be earmarked in the ambulance garage to accommodate a police vehicle transporting a prisoner for treatment.

Because the project is still out to bid, the hospital has not disclosed the estimated construction cost, according to project architect Kristin Blake.

If all goes as planned, the

hospital hopes to complete the work on the ER by the first quarter of 2019, Blake said.

No state certificate of need is required for the project, she said.

Actor: ‘I beat the streets, you can, too’

She was a heavy drinker.

Following his mom’s death, DeOrio found himself on his own with nowhere or anyone to turn to. He had a single bag of belongings that he carried with him everywhere. But he had nowhere to live, despite his father’s wealth, shelter and success.

Imagine that for a second — the son of a well-to-do hotel owner living on the streets.

He often had no idea where he’d sleep. Or how he’d eat.

But there was something he did have — Paterson — that kept him going.

He knew the city was known for being the home of Larry Doby, the second black man to play in Major League Baseball (and the first in the American League — just

“It was extraordinary,” DeOrio said. “It was these Paterson guys — and not just Doby and Costello – who made me realize I could get out of this mess.”

And that’s precisely what he did.

Recall earlier we mentioned DeOrio now has a permanent display in the Paterson Museum? That’s because he truly is an adopted son of the city that is too often known for its negatives. DeOrio boasts an amateur boxing record of 21-5. He sparred with some of boxing’s greats, including Hector Camacho and Roberto Duran.

He’s acted, including TV roles on “Law & Order” and “Blue Bloods.” He’s had a leading role in the movie “The Right to Live.”

He’s written two books — one called “Jaded: A True Story” and the other called “Jaded 2: The Silent Injustice.” Both books revolve around his hometown, and are based on experiences of his own and a female friend.

And if all goes well, he is expected to be cast in a movie — he and his partners are awaiting nearly $50 million in funding from a Chinese bank — that should “go bigtime.”

Think our laws are strict? Well ...

By Kevin Canessa Sometimes, we Americans take for granted the laws established in this country.

Shockingly, one of our closest allies, the United Kingdom, has laws that make us look easy.

Here’s what I mean.

Last week, over the July 4 long weekend, I searched Netflix for something new to watch. Usually, I look for British TV shows. I happened upon one called “Can’t Pay? We’ll Take it Away.”

It’s a reality series that follows what they call “High Court Enforcement Officers.” In the U.K., the High Court is the highest civil court in the land.

But let’s take a step back for a moment.

There are also County Courts that handle similar cases, including the eviction of tenants who fall behind on their rents or mortgages.

So now take this scenario.

A resident falls behind on the rent. The landlord goes, first, to county court to have the tenant evicted. If the County Court approves the eviction, the tenant gets 30 days to get their things in or-

der to either make payments or get out.

But a landlord who has superior finances decides that 30-day period is too long.

He goes to the High Court because he’s got the means to afford to do so (to pay for a solicitor and the court costs.) The High Court issues a writ of eviction — and that’s where the courtenforcement officers come in.

Without notice, the courteviction officers show up to the place where a resident is to be evicted — and even though the County Court says the tenant has 30 days to get out, because the landlord has gone to the High Court, the eviction occurs … get this … on the spot.

The tenant has, despite having been told they’ve got 30 days to prepare, two hours to get out.

Two hours.

That’s 120 minutes to remove all their worldly possessions.

Then to move on to God knows where thereafter.

When I first saw this show, my initial thought was, “Wow, this is good.” When people don’t pay rent — it really does get them out.

But shortly thereafter, “What the?” was the only thought I could envision.

Some of these people are under the false pretense that they’ve got about a month to prepare to move. And then, out of nowhere, because a landlord has the means to do so, they’re given a mere two hours to get out?

It’s another example of the survival of the richest.

In a lot of the cases shown on the show, it’s often single mums with children — women who struggle to put food on the table — who are the victims here. Sure, they do, indeed, owe rent in arrears. But could you even imagine if a single mum you knew was thrown out on the streets — with no notice at all — and nowhere to go?

It happens in the U.K. at an alarming rate. Fortunately, the High Court Enforcement Officers are extremely kind and caring — and do what they can to find temporary shelter for the evictees.

There are councils formed to do just that.

But imagine this.

Oftentimes, the temporary housing is 40 miles away.

So picture a single Kearny mum getting evicted, with

two children, only to be told she can get temporary lodging … in Sparta.

What then?

What happens to this single mum who has no transport, two kids — and now, no way to get to work?

Let’s be real. Though the law in the U.K. is much more stringent than our laws, this happens to people in our own communities, too. And what happens when it occurs at no fault to the single mum? Or single dad.

Maybe the bleeding heart in me should clot a little.

But bad things happen to people — and it’s not always because people are fiscally irresponsible.

Imagine facing what people face in the U.K.?

If you have a chance, check out the show on Netflix.

It’s brutal what happens to most (not all.) Of course, there are some who just decide they’d rather spend rent on expensive electronic items. Sympathy or empathy?

Not from me in those cases.

But for the ones who truly feel the pain of it all because of circumstances out of their

control?

There just has to be a better way.

There has to be.

And in the U.K., the courts need to communicate with each other — desperately better than they do. Giving two hours to empty an apartment (flat) or home is just not enough time.

Odds & ends • I really enjoyed reading Ron Leir’s column last week titled, “The world’s a mess, but there’s baseball.”

And while I rarely disagree with Ron on, well, anything, I must simply ask: “Oh yeah, what about for Mets’ fans?”

• The Nutley PD had its Junior Police Academy a few weeks ago and the Kearny PD will soon host its own. Not sure there’s any program better for kids out there than what the NPD and KPD do.

Only wish these things existed when we were kids.

KPD: This driver was on a roll KEARNY – t 4 a.m. on July 4, Kearny police responded to an accident on Devon St., between Oakwood and Quincy Aves., where a 2000 Honda wagon had reportedly rammed a parked car, rolled over — fully, completely, 360 degrees — and then drove away.

Police said they were alerted by the owner of the struck vehicle, who witnessed the crash (and the automotive acrobatics), saw the Honda driver actually exit the vehicle, then jump back in and head south on Devon. The witness also managed to get the plate number.

Units scoured the area, and Officer Jonathan Dowie found the “heavily damaged” Honda in a parking lot on the 300 block of Kearny Ave. There, police said, he also found the driver, Kevin Linares, 20, of Kearny, who, according to a source, made the following “spontaneous utterance”: “I f--ked up.”

Back-up Officers David Bush and Michael Gontarczuk also arrived on the scene — as did Kearny EMS, since Linares was bleeding from the face.

Allegedly he also was staggering and smelled of alcohol, so after being treated medically, field sobriety tests were conducted.

Found in the car, police said, were three bags of suspected marijuana and a large number of empty bags “commonly associated with the packaging” of a CDS. The Honda was impounded and Linares arrested and taken to headquarters, where he was given an Alcotest and charged with: DWI, careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to report an accident, consumption of alcohol by an underage person, and possession of pot and drug paraphernalia.

Police said he also was wanted on a $500 drug-related Kearny warrant.

June 29 At 12:30 a.m., Officer Bush was at N. Midland Ave. and Alpine Place when a speeding, swerving, westbound

2003 Hyundai nearly hit his patrol car, police said. Since the Hyundai didn’t stop, Bush followed, bringing it to a halt at Passaic and W. Bennett Aves.

The driver, a 46-year-old Newark woman, was given summonses for careless driving and a tail-light violation, but it was her passenger who ended up in bigger trouble.

Police said Bush and back-up Officer Gontarczuk recognized Axel Rodriguez, 44, of Kearny, and observed on the floorboard near his feet a cut straw and a cap for a hypodermic syringe.

In a search incident to arrest for possession of CDS paraphernalia, he was allegedly found to have a wax fold of suspected heroin, stamped “The Message,” and was additionally charged with drug possession.

After processing at HQ , he was sent to the Hudson County Jail.

June 30 At 3:30 a.m., police said, Officer Dowie ran a plate check on an eastbound 1991 Honda that was swerving along the Belleville Pike, found that the owner had a suspended license and, with Bush and Gontarczuk as back-up, brought the car to a stop at Beech St. Police said driver Angel Alvarado, 30, of Kearny, could not produce a license and, when he exited the car, a bag of suspected cocaine was in plain view on the driver’s seat. When front-seat passenger Vanessa Fajardo, 26, of Belleville, alighted, a bag of suspected coke reportedly was also found where she had been sitting. Both driver and passenger were arrested.

Arriving at HQ , yet another bag of the drug reportedly fell out of Fajardo’s skirt in the KPD garage. Once inside, she asked to use the ladies’ room and, while entering the female cell area, was allegedly seen “frantically attempting to swallow something.” Confronted, police said, she spat four more bags of coke onto the cellblock floor.

Both Alvarado and Fajardo were charged with possession of coke and drug paraphernalia.

He also received summonses for careless driving, driving while suspended and operating a MV while in possession of a CDS. Fajardo was additionally

charged with intent to distribute, intent within 1,000 feet of a school, criminal attempted destruction of evidence, and on a $1,000 disorderly-person warrant out of Newark. Newark PD was notified.

population but School 7 has our largest space. And School 10 is across the street from the old SoHo hospital which is being converted to residential apartments so we may have to do something to accommodate any added students from that development.”

Current elementary school enrollment figures provided by the superintendent show the Middle School topping all others at 989; School 8 has 438, followed by School 7 with 395; then School 4 with 348, School 5 with 339, School 3 with 313, School 10 with 165 and School 9 with 129.

At the same time, the team will also have to take into account enrollment projections, Tomko said. The district’s demographer has advised it that, “our [overall] population is growing.”

Meanwhile, the district is looking to deal with its aging school infrastructure – a recent consultant’s report

recommended an $80 million capital fixup – and at its next meeting on July 13, the board may authorize placing a public question on the ballot that would allow it to spend at least a portion of that amount with the expectation that the state would provide up to 40% reimbursement on debt.

If that doesn’t happen July 13, it will happen soon, Tomko said. “We’re going ahead with a referendum – we have no choice if we want to keep our school buildings safe for the next generation of students.”

The board has already begun some modest improvements, having acquired new boilers for the Middle School, authorized repairs to the front entrance canopy at School 7 and undertaking repairs and refinishing of floors in the boys’ and girls’ gyms and installing new basketball backboards at the Middle School and fixing a gym floor at the high school.

As the board looks to tackle

these challenges, Tomko will be assuming some extra work, taking over the job of director of English & Language Arts following the retirement of the prior director.

“I’ll be overseeing ELA with the directors of elementary and secondary education,” he said. “It’s a major thing we need to be working on.”

At its May 22 meeting, the board voted to re-appoint Tomko with a new four-year deal, through June 30, 2021, at a current pay rate of $191,584, with annual 2% pay increases which would bring him up to little over $200,000 by the end of his new contract.

As per state Department of Education superintendent salary cap guidelines, Tomko had been previously earning $167,500 but the DOE has revised those rules.

The DOE has also extended the assignment of the district’s state fiscal monitor Tom Egan for an additional year.

By the end of the afternoon, the clinic had seen 73 applicants, said Julie Bernal, executive director of We Are One – Hudson County Center. Of those, 54 had their applications completed; the rest are still in process, due to missing documents or incomplete information, she said.

Most of the applicants were Portuguese; others listed their country of origin as Central and South America, notably Mexico and Venezuela, said Bernal.

We Are One New Jersey conducted a prior clinic June 25 in Harrison which, Bernal said, drew 96 immigrants. “A lot were Portuguese,” she said, “but also many Peruvians, Cubans and Dominicans.”

Asked about the economic mix of the applicants, Bernal said: “We tend to cater mostly to those receiv-

ing benefits from the state or low-income people.”

She said the nonprofit also offers citizenship classes in Jersey City and Union City and individual simulated citizenship interview sessions to prepare applicants for the real deal.

For those applicants who achieve their goal, the nonprofit follows up “to help them register to vote, apply for a U.S. passport and, where appropriate, update their Social Security status,” Bernal said.

It also helps with green card renewals and applications for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), she added.

Seeing so many clients at the clinics was no surprise to Bernal. “A lot of [immigrants] previously were feeling secure in their day-to-day life by renewing their [U.S.] residency

every 10 years,” she said, “but after the change of federal administration, there has been a resurgence of feelings of insecurity,” given that criminal arrests linked to DUI or domestic violence can now subject undocumented residents to the risk of deportation by the INS. For that reason, Bernal said, We Are One New Jersey, refers its clients – where applicable – “to legitimate attorneys who partner with us to help assess their cases.”

Additionally, she said, the nonprofit has been conducting legal rights sessions for immigrants, in cooperation with agencies like WIC and the Urban League of Hudson County, to train them to prepare contingency plans for family members if they do face the likelihood of being deported.

Court deals town setback in Hartz litigation

By Ron Leir Observer Correspondent KEARNY – fforts by Kearny to delay a real estate developer from moving forward with a meadows project were dealt a setback by a recent court ruling.

Hudson County Superior Court Judge Barry Sarkisian, sitting in Jersey City, on June 27 ordered the town to issue an “estoppel certificate” to Hartz Mountain Industries.

Hartz, through its Hackensack law firm Pashman Stein Walder Hayden, had sued the town after it had refused to provide the legal document which Hartz said it needed to acquire a development loan.

Hartz, which has been granted redevelopment rights for a 9.5-acre section of Bergen Ave., off Harrison Ave., under a lease agreement with the town, had sub-leased a portion of the site to Cummins Power Systems, a Fortune 500 truck and marine-engine manufacturing and service firm, for technical training, parts sales and truck maintenance and repair.

As part of its commitment to the project, Hartz pledged to build a state-of-the-art truck maintenance facility for which it “sought approximately $19 million in financing from Teachers Insurance & Annuity Association,” according to court papers.

And, court papers said, “As a precondition to providing the financing, [TIAA] requested an estoppel certificate” — a legal document stipulating that there is a valid lease in effect, the rent is being paid and the prospective borrower is not in default of its obligations under the lease — from Kearny as landlord.”

After a period of negotiation between the parties, Kearny declined to provide the document, alleging that, among other things, the lease related to the Hartz project is “tainted” because it had its origins from a prior 30-yearold lease agreement between the town and a rival development firm linked to an effort by a rival firm to bribe a former mayor and two excouncilmen.

This argument by Kearny, however, was rejected by the court on the basis of government actions taken by the town and its Planning Board consenting to and validating a new lease agreement – along with the assignment of redevelopment rights – to Hartz for the property in question.

“Kearny has, time and again, acted in such a way to recognize the validity of the lease over the last 30 years, only to, in the past two years, change its position as to the validity of the … lease,” the court noted.

Moreover, the court said, “During this time, Hartz has reasonably relied on the

belief that the … lease would be treated as valid by Kearny, given Kearny’s decades of consistent treatment of Hartz as the redeveloper of the … parcel, and has apparently spent over $8 million to remediate the property, found a tenant, and expended over $14 million on construction of necessary improvements to the property

for that tenant. As a matter of equity, Kearny cannot now deny the validity of the lease and refuse to issue an estoppel certificate on that basis.”

Former Nutley soccer coach Marra new Belleville AD The late Karen Fuccello was the athletic director at Belleville High School for 20 years, but when Fuccello died a decade ago, it triggered a host of successors who didn’t have the longevity in the position that Fuccello enjoyed.

Enter the newest keeper of the Belleville athletic flame in Marcellino Marra.

You probably have heard or read Marra’s name before. That’s because for the last 10 years, Marra was the popular head boys’ soccer coach at neighboring rival Nutley.

The 40-year-old Marra was appointed last month to replace former Belleville AD Dan Sanacore, who spent only two years in the position.

Marra, who has held an administration certificate since 2006, said that he always aspired to get into the administrative end of athletics, but coaching was always a priority.

“I had an opportunity about five years ago, but I wanted to keep coaching,” Marra said. “But this is a great opportunity for me now, because I’m a vice-principal as well as athletic director.”

More importantly,

Marra is a Belleville resident and has been for the last 10 years now.

“I love everything about the community and the kids,” Marra said.

Marra was selected among a field of more than 100 applicants for the position. The powersthat-be, namely Superintendent of Schools Dr. Richard Tomko and Principal Caleb Rhodes, met with Marra and decided that he was their man.

“After I met with them and talked to them, I felt like it was the right move for me,” Marra said. “I’m friends with (former Belleville athletic director) Tom D’Elia and I just knew it was a job that I wanted to have.”

Marra, a product of Nutley High, played soccer at Nutley and Caldwell College. He started coaching and teaching in Nutley in 2000 and became the head boys’ soccer coach in 2007, leading the Maroon Raiders to two league championships during his tenure.

“I don’t think I’ll ever stop being their coach,” Marra said. “My players will remain my people.

or years, the North Arlington High School football coaching staff would host a week-long camp in June for prospective players at Rip Collins Field.

The same could be said for the North Arlington baseball program.

Then the coaches involved realized two things: One, most of the kids who attended one camp were students at the other camp as well. And two, attendance numbers at the camps were dwindling.

“We’re a (NJSIAA) Group I school,” said NA veteran baseball coach Paul Marcantuono.

“We always try to promote other sports. We’re all on the same page. We’re not in competition for kids. We all want the kids to play multiple sports.”

“It’s all about getting everyone on the same page,” said

new NA head football coach Paul Savage. “We all work together in the school, so why not work together in a camp setting to help get our teams to be better.”

There lies the reason for the birth of the new North Arlington Combo Camp, which combined football and baseball instruction in the same week.

“It was just a new idea that we decided to try,” Savage said.

“Our all-around goal was to get kids to understand the coaches better and realize why the coaches are here.”

Savage introduced the idea to Marcantuono, who liked the concept.

“I thought it was a great idea,” Marcantuono said. “I said, ‘Let’s do it. Let’s combine the two.’ It’s what a school of our size has to do.”

So last week at Collins Field, the students were treated to two days of football instruction, two days of baseball teaching and then a day of fun with in-

teresting games and contests.

“We alternated days,” Marcantuono said. “The kids seemed to enjoy it. It made everything fresh. We had about 30 kids, so the numbers definitely improved from last year. I think having the Combo Camp helped.”

Savage said that if a student wanted to focus strictly on baseball, he was given that opportunity. The same with football. But most chose to learn about the two sports because there is a strong chance that they will be asked to participate in those two sports when the time comes for them to enroll in North Arlington High.

“Everyone gets what they came for,” Savage said. “They could get the best of both worlds.”

For Savage, being a new coach, it helped to get acquainted with his new players.

familiar with the new faces,” said Savage, who inherits the program that coach Anthony Marck helped to nurture over the last few years. “By the time they get here, the kids will already know who I am. I can see their faces and they seem interested.”

The coaches devised a motto that appeared on the back of their Combo Camp T-Shirts.

“It says, ‘Athletes Play Everything,’” Savage said. “Not only do we want the kids to realize that, but we want other people around town to know it as well.”

The campers seemed to like the two-sport approach.

“Having both sports has

proved to be a lot of fun,” said 11-year-old Lucas Young, a student of the North Arlington Middle School who plays first base and centerfield in baseball and is a fullback and linebacker during football season. “I learned how to shuffle my feet properly when I’m getting to first base and getting the ball to first faster. In football, I learned how to do moves on people, how to juke them out. It really was helpful. I liked it that way, getting a little bit of both.”

Tony Alho is a 13-year-old freshman-to-be at NA. He is an aspiring baseball player who is a catcher, third baseman and left fielder.

“I learned about different ways to lead off base,” Alho said. “I also learned how the

varsity practices and I wanted to learn that. It’s been a lot of fun coming here and I learned a lot.”

Joey Witt is a 14-year-old fledgling baseball star at NA. “I learned how to take a cutoff throw (from the outfield),” Witt said. “I’ve been to this camp a lot of times. It’s good to get me ready for high school.”

Jeremiah Zakhary is a 10-year-old student of the Middle School.

“This was a fun way to start the summer,” Zakhary said. “If I wanted to, I could pick one sport or the other.”

Zakhary chose baseball.

“I learned the proper way to do a relay,” Zakhary said. “It’s going to help me.”

Jesse Calfayan is a 10-year-

old camper who attends Washington School. He worked on both sports in the Combo Camp.

“I play both sports and I wanted to learn as much as I could about both,” Calfayan said. “It helps to know both sports as I get older and it was fun to work on both sports at the same time.”

Robert Kairys is an 11-yearold Middle School student.

He’s a baseball player, a regular jack-of-all-trades.

“I play third base and pitcher and catcher and second base,” Kairys said without stopping to catch his breath. “It felt good to learn more about baseball.”

And what did Kairys learn?

“How to dive correctly for a ball,” Kairys said.

One didn’t know that there was a right way and a wrong way.

“Well, I know now,” Kairys said.

Matt Higgins is a nine-yearold Roosevelt School student.

He just wants to play baseball.

“I’ll play anywhere the coach wants me to play,” Higgins said.

And what did Higgins learn last week?

“I learned that I’m really good at the Home Run Derby,” Higgins said. “I won for both the Little League and Senior League. I hit three.”

Former Nutley boys’ soccer coach Marcellino Marra has turned in his coaching gear to don the blue and gold of Belleville High School, taking over as the school’s new athletic director.

“Athletics teaches kids how to become teammates, how to

have discipline and respect.

That’s what I want to do, teach the kids about having discipline.”

Marra said that he will always treasure the time he spent at Nutley and the relationships he formed there. For example, Nutley athletic director Joe Piro is one of Marra’s closest friends. So is girls’ soccer and boys’ wrestling coach Mike DiPiano and his brother, Frank DiPiano, who was a former Nutley coach.

“I also grew up with (Clifton athletic director and Rutherford councilman) Tom Mullahey,” Marra said. “Nothing is going to change with those guys. They are guys I can call

anytime if I have a problem.

We’re all out to help each other.

It’s like my own little family. They’re going to help me anyway that they can. They’re always going to be my brothers.

Nothing will change that.”

But Marra has to get used to the fact that he’s no longer a member of Raider Nation, that it’s Buc Pride from here on in.

“I feel good about this opportunity,” Marra said. “I’ve been thinking about doing administrative work for a while now. It’s all about timing and opportunity. This is the right place at the right time.”

And hopefully, Marra is around long enough to enjoy the position for a long time.

Town still awaits full share of meadows tax KEARNY –

Word arrived recently from Trenton that the state’s newly adopted budget contains only a portion of the money that Kearny is owed from the meadows tax sharing fund.

But, for its own municipal budget purposes, Kearny is “anticipating [getting] the full amount,” town CFO Shuaib Firozvi said.

This assumption, however,

remains under review by the state Division of Local Government Services, and, until it signs off on the town’s strategy, Kearny cannot adopt its 2017 budget, Firozvi said.

Kearny has sued the state Department of the Treasury – as the ultimate dispenser of the meadows aid, which is actually levied as a hotel tax – to get the full amount.

For 2016, Firozvi said, the town had previously received about $1.8 million and the state budget will provide the balance for the year or about $1.7 million.

For 2017, he said, “we’ve gotten $976,000 so far but we’re supposed to get a total of $4,354,000.”

quarter tax bills sometime this week and they are due back Aug. 10, Fiozvi said.

Assuming that the DLGS goes along with the town’s plan to anticipate the full amount of funding and the town adopts its proposed budget, Firozvi said local property owners can expect to see an overall average tax increase of $35.78.

For the average homeowner, that’s based on the municipal portion going up by $26.15, the local school portion rising by $145.41 and the county share falling by $136.12, he said.

The municipal budget, as now envisioned, would earmark $1.4 million for surplus which is down $400,000 from last year’s account.

Lyndhurst hosts annual baseball camp for 65 youngsters

t’s the third year that Pat Auteri hosted the Lyndhurst Baseball Camp down at the township’s recreational facility and the head coach at Lyndhurst High believes that this was the biggest to date.

“We had 65 kids and that’s the most we ever had,” said Auteri, who just finished his

second year as the Lyndhurst head coach. “For the most part, we got out to the schools and handed out fliers. Every year, the number has been going up. Hopefully, we’ll get 75 next year.”

The camp was held last week, with Auteri running the show, but getting assistance from a lot of different sources.

“We got a lot of support from the town,” Auteri said.

“The (Lyndhurst) Recreation department let us use the field and gave me whatever I needed. We even had use of the softball field (which is adjacent to the main baseball field), so that was good for the younger kids. We had use of the entire complex. The town likes to show off the facilities and this was a good opportunity to do so. The town is so proud of it.”

Auteri thanked Thomas DiMaggio, the Commissioner of Parks; Rich Gress, the Superintendent of Parks/DPW; and Paul Passamano, the Recreation Coordinator for their help in getting the facility ready.

“Everyone chips in,” Auteri said. “We want the kids in town to be familiar with me before they get to high school.

Maybe in the future, we can do two weeks, because this one week went by so quickly.

We’re going to try to put that together for next year.

No doubt about the fact that Lyndhurst kids love their baseball.”

Auteri said that the weeklong activities were broken into two sessions.

“In the morning session, it was strictly instruction,” Auteri said. “For the most part, the kids are here to learn and we give them plenty to learn.”

But then after lunch, the camp becomes fun.

“We have games all afternoon,” Auteri said. “The kids really enjoy that. They take a few things that they learn in the morning sessions and bring them to use in the games.”

Last Wednesday, the campers had contests to compete in.

“We timed them in base running and accuracy throwing,” Auteri said.

On Thursday, the highlight of the camp took place with the Home Run Derby.

“We have a good time with that,” Auteri said. “At the end of the day, it’s all about having fun. Kids are out of school for a reason. Sure, they learn some, but we want them to have fun as well. I love seeing the kids’ faces during the week. They’re all playing the game of baseball because they continued next page

love it. I see that energy and I think it’s just great.”

Auteri said that he gets a special kick out of working with the younger campers.

“Teaching the little ones gives me the biggest thrill,” Auteri said. “To see them doing things right makes me smile.

It means that they’re learning and listening, which is a key.

They also get familiar with me and my coaching staff, so they know what to expect down the road from us. It really is a great week.”

One of the personal thrills that Auteri received came from teaching his 13-year-old nephew Vinnie during the camp.

So what was it like to be taught and coached by an uncle?

“It was awesome,” Vinnie Auteri said. “I was learning and having fun at the same time.”

The Nowinski brothers, Ben and Jack, also participated in the camp.

Ben is a 13-year-old eighth grader at Jefferson School.

“I worked on my bunting,” Ben Nowinski said. “I learned how to position my bat and where to put the ball. I learned how much power I should put

on the ball when I bunt it.”

Jack is an 11-year-old sixth grader at Jefferson. He plays all sports — football, basketball and baseball — but likes baseball best.

“I learned about fielding the ball and leading the throw to first base,” Jack Nowinski said.

“I had so much fun with my friends. I was learning stuff, but having fun made it better.

It was pretty good to be there with my friends. It’s the fourth time I went to this camp. I was learning new stuff every day.”

Ben Nowinski’s highlight of the week was the Home Run Derby.

“I made it to the finals,” Ben

Nowinski said. “I was on the field with all my friends and it was great. If there wasn’t a camp, I would be just hanging out, but this way, I was able to keep playing baseball. That makes me better and encourages me to play more. I’m lucky to have all the stuff that Lyndhurst has to offer.”

Vinnie Auteri’s summer of baseball hasn’t ended. He still plays on the Lyndhurst Recreation travel team.

“I highly recommend it,” Auteri said of the camp. “If I wasn’t there, I’d probably be home playing video games.”

Baseball is always a healthier alternative.

Rec soccer registration Registration forms are currently available for fall recreation soccer 2017. The Nutley Recreation Soccer Program is open to Nutley youngsters in grades 1 through 8 and is designed to assist young players in developing basic skills of the game while offering a fun, semi-competitive environment. Recreation soccer is

also a great opportunity for youngsters to exercise and have fun in a safe, social environment. All games are in town. Tryouts are not required. All applicants who submit their registration before the deadline of Aug. 15 are guaranteed placement on a team.

I can surely see that they will be touring for a long time to come.

Out of all of the NKOTB guys, Donnie was the only one who remained in the public eye. He continues to write, produce and act, including CBS’s hit show “Blue Bloods.”

This show was something I will always remember. All three of these acts were great. I don’t have a single negative comment about any of them. I am quite happy that I had the opportunity to see them. Yes, they all used backing tracks and didn’t actually sing, but it really was a fantastic show. Each act performed at least an hour or more.

The tour runs through 2018. If you can, I highly recommend you catch it. Go back in time and relive the No. 1 hit songs that had us dancing and singing 20 to 30 years ago.

And, once again, the Prudential Center doesn’t disappoint. I know I’ve said it before, but there really isn’t

a bad seat in the house. The arena itself was modified to a smaller size. The stage reached out at least a quarter into the audience and the stage was at both ends of the seating bowl. In the center of the stage was a pit filled with crazy fans. The outside of the stage there were seats that looked like a bar.

Everyone had a great view to all of the action.

The Prudential Center absolutely caters to their customers and ensures everyone gets their money’s worth. It’s is so close to our homes and is a beautiful facility. They were no holds barred when the built this arena, done with the customer in mind for an alwayspleasant and wonderful experience.

Born in Jersey City, Jim lived in Kearny for 64 years. He had been a bus driver/operator for Public Services/Transport of NJ for 38 years until retiring in 1976. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and an usher at St. Stephen’s Church, Kearny, for many years. He was also a member the Knights of Columbus Council 3428 in North Arlington.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II as a sergeant 1st class from 1940-1945.

He was predeceased by his wife, Grace (nee Hanson) in December 2016 as well as his sisters, Frances Bayone, Loretta Flatley and Helen Hennis.

Surviving are his children, Barbara G. Ward (Douglas), Kathleen M. Hennis, James M. Hennis (Catherine) Richard D. Hennis and Steven R. Hennis (Nicole); as well as seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Jim’s memory to the St. Stephen’s Heritage Fund.
