Has St. Anthony School finally been sold?

That transaction could signal the prelude for an eventual consolidation or

merger of the Catholic parishes based at Holy Cross Church in Harrison and St. Anthony’s in East Newark.

Mass continues to be celebrated at St. Anthony’s Church on N. Second St., but as early as September 2012, the Rev. Joseph Girone, the then-pastor of Holy Cross, registered a website — www. holycross-stanthony.org — listing religious activities and Mass times for Holy

Cross and St. Anthony Churches.

That website remains active but still “under construction.”

Girone’s replacement, the Rev. John Carlos DeSousa, who was named in early 2016, is serving as administrator of both parishes. He recently announced from the pulpit at Holy Cross that a possible union of the parishes is being actively explored

as part of the archdiocesan New Energies Parish Initiatives.

Jim Goodness, spokesman for the Archdiocese of Newark, last week confirmed that the school building — which the borough has used as a community center for the past 15 or so years — was purchased by Harrison Properties LLC for $700,000.

“The sale was consummated in the last few weeks and we expect to close sometime in July,” Goodness said.

An archdiocesan real estate website lists the building as about 60 years old, with each floor consisting of about 5,400 square feet. The first floor has a “large banquet-style hall,” with bathrooms; the second floor has “four standardsize classrooms and storage area” and the basement has a large hall, adjunct side hall, kitchen and small bathroom.

The property is zoned for 2-family residential/commercial/recreation use. The parking lot has room for 35 vehicles.

Calvin Xiao, listed as the buyer’s representative, was contacted by The Observer and asked what his client intended to do with the 2-story-plus-basement, 16,000-square foot brick building and parking lot, which fronts along Sherman Ave. between N. Second and John Sts. “I have no comment for you,” Xiao told a reporter. “A plan for the property hasn’t been finalized.”

will be forthcoming quite soon — East Newark Mayor Joseph Smith last week told The Observer that someone had phoned Borough Hall to request a list of property owners within a 200-foot radius of the St. Anthony site at Second and John Sts. That could be a signal that some entity plans to file an application with the borough’s joint Zoning/ Planning Board for land use approvals for development of the site.

If such an application were filed and the board scheduled a public hearing, the applicant would be required to notify area property owners of the hearing.

However, the request for the list of addresses was made by someone other than “Harrison Properties” and the borough would not immediately disclose the entity’s name.

While the property was on the market, Goodness said, “there was interest from the [borough] and a couple of prospective [private] buyers.”

Last fall, the borough governing body voted to authorize bonding for up to $500,000 for acquisition of the property and environmental cleanup costs.

Reportedly, the borough and Board of Education had hoped to secure the building to relieve pressure on its cramped elementary school.

But those plans would seem to be moot now with the announced purchase by an outside entity.

sey Regional Day School in Newark (the school’s part of the Newark Public School system) is taking a full-year sabbatical this coming academic year — though she will probably be working more than she would have if she remained stateside.

She’s leaving for China this week (Wednesday, June 28) and will be making stops in Asia, Africa and Europe through March. She’ll be teaching lessons — mostly about environmental issues, but also about geography, social justice and other academic skills — to her fourthand fifth-grade students back in Newark via video.

Sometimes, she’ll do it live (that won’t be easy given time-zone differences.) Other times, it’ll be recorded.

It will all be part of her students’ curriculum (though they’ll still get their regular lessons from a substitute teacher while Davie is away.)

Now get this: While she’s gone, Davie will not be paid, and she’ll be funding her global journey on her own.

She says she’ll really miss her parents — Ken and Edna Davie, of Kearny — the most while she’s gone, but they’ll get to see her at least once.

They’ll be visiting Sarah for her 30th birthday while she’s in New Zealand.

Additionally, Blood said, the district won’t be replacing a supervisor of English Language Arts and Social Studies, one secretary, one custodian and two media specialists, all of whom are retiring.

Asked about the teaching positions, Blood said that each accounted for an average base pay of about $52,000 plus $25,000 for health benefits, thereby accounting for a total of nearly $1.1 million.

“We are continuing to look at the budget to see if we can bring back additional teachers,” Blood said, “and if we can, those most recently not reappointed would be the first we’d look to bring back.”

But she conceded that unless the Legislature acts to redistribute the pool of state school aid, such an outcome seems unlikely.

And, even if the state lawmakers did provide the additional money and if the governor signed the bill, there is no way of knowing when the money would get to local districts, she noted.

One Lincoln School firstgrader’s mom, who gave only her first name, Mairenis, said, “My husband was a history major in college and he made me promise to bring Taylor [her daughter] to the library twice a week.”

Books have become a happy habit for Taylor, who got her library card when she was in kindergarten: “Every night before she goes to bed, my husband and I take turns reading to her,” her mom said.

Another mom, Shyamala Jacob, who accompanied her daughter Ashrita, a fourth-grader at Hamilton School, to the library, said Ashrita “likes all types of books.”

A week later, there were more rewards when kids selected from each grade in both schools for their reading appetites were the lucky winners of 47 bikes donated by Walmart through a “community partner” grant. The district raised funds to pay for helmets.

These activities were the joyous culmination of a yearlong initiative by the district to

jumpstart kids’ performance in English Language Arts through the habit of reading.

Among kids in kindergarten, personal favs are trending toward the “Amelia Bedelia” series for girls and “Captain Underpants” for boys, said Lincoln School teacher Lindsay DeMaio, who paused in her bookmarkmaking instruction to give this tip to a reporter.

“This [library] program is a nice refresher before school lets out,” DeMaio noted. During the summer, her students — as will those in other grades — “must read a book of their choice.”

Last week, when the kids got their bicycles — many with training wheels — Heberling said that books were meant to be the inspiration. So no wonder she called the giveaway, “Get a ride from reading.”

“We also gave out applications to get a library card to those kids who don’t have yet one,” she said.

Heberling, who also serves as a literacy coach, credited her overseer, curriculum & instruction director Maureen Kroog, with being “all in” on the project.

“We talked about doing this after learning that Nutley [schools] did something similar and we put it together in a couple of days,” she said.

Cattafi envisions starting up the program with boys and girls in grades 5 through 8, “with the hope of leading to younger kids participating in

the future.”

He said he would need “at least 20 to 25” youngsters to begin with. “That would give us enough for at least two teams. And we’d start with basic instruction in playing the game.”

The director said he’d find a way to pay for equipment and uniforms “out of my rec budget,” although he has yet to project what the program would cost to run.

“We’d play during the spring,” he said.

Although he hasn’t yet reached out to Kearny public school officials to see if they would have any inclination

to launch a dual lacrosse recruitment effort, Cattafi said he would look into that possibility in future conversations with Vincent Almeida, Kearny High School athletic director.

Kearny’s new municipal administrator, Robert J. Smith, was an assistant coach of the boys’ lacrosse team in Washington Township during prior government service in Gloucester County and Cattafi said he did approach Smith about considering extending his duties to the Rec program but he respectfully declined, given his other responsibilities.

Camps offer volleyball, baseball, hoops S

KEARNY – ports opportunities abound this summer for Kearny youngsters. Here are some samplers of what’s out there: Kearny Volleyball Camp runs Tuesday, June 27, through Thursday, June 29, from 1 to 4 p.m. daily, at Kearny High School gym for boys and girls, ages 10 to 18.

William Mullins is handling arrangements. A camp fee of $90, which includes a T-shirt, is charged.

The KHS gym is also hosting Kearny Girls’ Basketball Camp, July 10 to 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.

Designed for ages 7 to 17, the camp — directed by KHS girls’ varsity basketball coach Jody Hill — features instruction in offensive and defensive stations, ball handling drills, foul shooting instruction, 5-on-5 full-court games, 3-on-3 competition with instruction, 1-on-1 competition with in-

struction, individual workouts, hot-shot contests and teaching how to attack a fast break.

Prizes will be given to competition winners, including a free scholarship to next year’s camp.

Need help paying your water bill?

Legislation sponsored by Assemblymembers Joann Downey, Jamel Holley and Angela McKnight to help seniors and low-income residents pay their water utility bills was approved 56-7-12 by the Assembly on Thursday, June 22 — and now heads to the Senate for final approval before reaching the governor’s desk.

“New Jersey has one of the highest costs of living in the country, so state assistance for utility bills can be a crucial lifeline to help ease this burden,” Downey said. “Water is just as vital of a utility as gas and

electric, so it only makes sense to extend this benefit to help struggling residents make ends meet.”

The bill (A-4168) would add assistance for water utility bills to the Lifeline Credit Program and the Tenants’ Lifeline Assistance Program. Under existing law, these programs provide a $225 benefit only on gas and electric utility bills to eligible customers who are participating in the Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Aged and Disabled Program (PAAD), receiving or eligible to receive benefits under the Supplemen-

tal Security Income program, or receiving disability benefits under the federal Social Security Act and also meet eligibility requirements for PAAD. Under existing law, in the event that electric and gas are provided to the same customer by two separate utilities, half of the total annual credit is applied to the bills from each such utility. This bill amends that requirement to account for the inclusion of a third utility, water.

In Philadelphia, customers delinquent on utility bills, including water bills, may apply for a utility grant.

Under existing law, the N.J. Commissioner of Human Services is required to submit an annual report to the Legislature on the Lifeline Credit Program. The report includes an estimate of the practicability and feasibility of expanding the program to include other needy electric and gas customers. This bill would include the needs of water utility customers in that annual report.

Deny access to service dogs?

Get ready to pay the price.

Legislation to uphold the right of people with disabilities to have equal access to public facilities is headed to the governor’s desk after receiving final legislative approval from the full state Senate Monday, June 19.

The legislation, which was unanimously approved by the full Assembly in January, was first proposed after 16-year-old Cherry Hill resident Ben Shore raised concerns about a policy in his school district outlining preconditions to be met in order for a student to be accompanied by a service animal, like his service dog Charlie.

The bill, known as “Charlie’s Law,” would establish civil penalties for those who deny individuals with disabilities accompanied by service or guide dogs access to any public facility.

The measure underscores provisions of the federal Americans with Disabilities Act, which requires state and local governments, businesses and nonprofit organizations

that serve the general public to admit service animals.

“If a student needs insulin or an inhaler, we don’t impose a burden upon that student.

We do whatever is necessary to ensure that his or her health care needs are met. The case of a student whose disability warrants the use of a service dog should be no different,” Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle said. “The law unequivocally prohibits discrimination against those who need services dogs, and New Jersey has a duty to ensure that public entities, businesses and nonprofits abide by it.”

Under the legislation, a first violation would carry a minimum penalty of $250. A second violation would carry a minimum penalty of $500. A third or subsequent violation would carry a minimum penalty of $1,000.

Penalties would fund educational programs for law enforcement officers on the right of persons with disabilities to have service or guide dogs in places of public accommodation.

Harrison mourns the loss of softball coach Ronga

They only had him for a little more than two years, but the Harrison High School softball team embraced Carmine Ronga like he had been there for 30.

“He always made us feel good,” said catcher Kiera Lucas. “When he first came, I knew that he would turn things around. Just by the way he spoke, you knew that he would make a difference. Not just in sports, but in life. He was very motivational.”

“Once I got to know him,” pitcher Jenna Vieira said, “I knew that he was there for us and wanted the best for us.”

Harrison athletic director Kim Huaranga remembers when Ronga, long established as a successful softball coach at his alma mater Hoboken, came in for the interview for her vacant softball coaching position.

“I asked him right away, ‘Why do you want this job?’” Huaranga said.

“He said, ‘Listen, I can go anywhere I want where the program is doing good and win. I want to come here and rebuild your program. I can lead you to success.’”

Carmine Ronga didn’t get the chance to lead the

Blue Tide to any championships like he did at Hoboken. He did change the culture tremendously before having to step down last spring when he was diagnosed with leukemia.

Ronga wasn’t able to return to the coaching box. He died last week after a year-long battle with leukemia. He was 67 years old.

“I think we were all totally shocked,” Huaranga said. “I heard things were looking up for him after getting a bone marrow transplant. He had a great positive outlook. We invited him to our banquet and his wife wrote back that he was in ICU. We hoped he would beat it.”

Huaranga said that the team had changed entirely under Ronga.

“We became a softball family,” Huaranga said.

“He did a lot for our girls and a lot of it came out of the pockets of him and his assistant coaches. The girls took it really hard.”

In April, the Harrison softball team had a special game in honor of Ronga and fighting leukemia.

Second from school to earn honors; joining his coach Camano

arrison High School head football coach Mike Hinchcliffe summed it up perfectly when describing his standout quarterback last season, Mike O’Donnell.

“He’s just a special kid,” Hinchcliffe said. “It’s very hard to find a kid like Mike O’Donnell.”

Harrison head baseball coach Jairo Mendez agrees.

“He’s the type of kid who knows what’s best for the team, then goes and does it,” Mendez said. “He’s just a tough competitor.”

And as for Harrison’s boys’ head basketball coach Bill Mullins?

“He has such tenacity and toughness,” Mullins said. “He’s an old school kind of kid, the one who gets the team going.”

But in O’Donnell’s eyes, he’s not doing anything special.

“I just liked playing,” O’Donnell said. “I liked being active and staying busy.”

That he did. O’Donnell left his mark as one of the best all-around athletes in Harrison High School history. And that says a lot, especially when you consider the athletes the school has produced like Ray Lucas and Kevin Hoey.

O’Donnell was the starting quarterback on the Harrison football team. Last season, he helped to turn the Blue Tide from a 3-7 bottom of the pack squad to a 7-3 team that qualified for the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group II playoffs for the first time in over a decade.

piled 1,212 yards passing with 15 touchdowns and just six interceptions. He also rushed for 893 yards on the ground in 119 carries and scored eight touchdowns.

On the basketball floor, O’Donnell spearheaded another turnaround, helping the Blue Tide improve to a 17-8 squad.

The point guard averaged 9.6 points per game, 5.8 assists per contest, along with three rebounds and three steals.

And on the baseball diamond, O’Donnell was as equally impressive, if not more.

The catcher batted .449 with five home runs and 33 RBI, had 35 hits and scored 19 runs. He had four RBI in a game three times in a five-game span.

Incredibly, O’Donnell spoke to his father, Mike, Sr., about receiving the award a few years ago.

“Me and my dad talked about it all the time,” O’Donnell said.

“I told him that I wanted to be the next one from Harrison to get the award. It’s a major achievement for me. It’s the best honor I’ve received since I arrived in Harrison High School.”

Growing up, football was the first sport that O’Donnell became accustomed to.

field with my dad,” O’Donnell said. “He was my coach from Pee Wees to Pop Warner to high school. He was definitely the biggest influence on me.

He taught me about what to do and what not to do. All my ability is thanks to him.”

O’Donnell said he was a toddler of perhaps two years old when he first went to a football practice and started playing when he was four years old.

“I couldn’t play in real games, but I was running around the field and such,” O’Donnell said.

“I was a running back all the way back then.”

O’Donnell remained a running back until he got to high school. He was first a QB on a team that ran the Wing-T offense that didn’t feature O’Donnell’s talents.

But during junior year, O’Donnell flourished under the new spread attack, which featured a lot of passing.

“It was kind of weird, because when I started, I didn’t have a chance to do anything,” O’Donnell said. “But when the new coaches came in, they knew that I could throw.”

new coach last fall. Hinchcliffe came to Harrison — his alma mater — only after an off-field incident forced the former coach to resign just two weeks prior to the opening game.

“I knew what kind of athlete he was when we scouted him,” said Hinchcliffe, who was an assistant at Ridgefield when he took the Harrison job. “When I saw him, I said, ‘Well, at least I

have something.’”

Hinchcliffe knew of O’Donnell through O’Donnell’s father.

“I’m friendly with his father for a long time,” said Hinchcliffe, who invited the older O’Donnell to be a member of his coaching staff. “Mike is a natural born leader. I knew that he had tremendous talents. It was easy to see that he was the

bridge I needed to the rest of the team. Just one look at his face and you could see that he had the belief in his eyes. I thought the kid could probably mean two wins, maybe three, on his own. He could make chicken salad out of chicken crap.”

Added Hinchcliffe, “When the chips were down, you knew that he was going to make the play. You just knew that he was going to do it. You knew he would get the job done.”

O’Donnell downplayed his football prowess.

“Playing running back made me understand being a quarterback,” O’Donnell said. “And being a quarterback just made me a better well-rounded player. I was in charge all the time and helped to put the people in the right places. I just had to throw it somewhere near Dustin (Husenovic, who had 38 receptions, eight for touchdowns) and he would catch it.”

Basketball just happened as a fluke.

“I was bored and needed something to do,” said O’Donnell. “I went out for basketball my junior year. I was first on JV and then got moved up.”

Mullins, in his first year like Hinchcliffe, inherited O’Donnell and knew he had his starting point guard.

“I didn’t know anything about him,’ Mullins said. “I just heard he was a good athlete who played three sports. It was a great thing to walk into because he just took over the point guard job. He came to practice every day and practiced hard every day. Being a point guard is a tough position, but he never came out of the game.

Added Mullins, “He’s not a loud kid, not a rah-rah kid. But we knew he’d give us 100% and lead by his work ethic. He was the leader because everyone respected his work ethic. It’s hard to get a good point guard.

He just got the ball up the floor and gave the ball to others to let them score. He pushed the ball up the court and was the key catalyst. He was also consistent.

You knew what you were going to get.”

“I think being the quarterback helped me as a point guard, because I could tell the others where to go and try to get them the ball,” O’Donnell said. “It was all about my ball work.”

In baseball season, O’Donnell just improved on what he had done over the prior two seasons.

“I like playing catcher,” O’Donnell said. “It’s the best thing I do. The catcher is one who has to be involved with every play of the game.”

Mendez liked what O’Donnell produced.

“Having someone like that who knows the game is a huge plus,” Mendez said. “It’s like having another coach on the field. He sees everything and that’s a huge help. He’s also definitely a competitor who hates to lose. He always wants what’s best for the team. You have that toughness and competitiveness, you just can’t teach that.

Added Mendez, “It’s been my pleasure to have coached Mikey for four years. He was enjoyable to have. He progressed every year and that’s because he worked hard.”

O’Donnell is off to New Jersey City University in the fall to study history and eventually would like to become a teacher and a coach. He’s had coach written all over him from the minute he stepped onto the turf at Harrison High. He’s also planning on playing baseball at NJCU next spring.

“Looking back, I can be very happy with myself and my career at Harrison High,” O’Donnell said. “This award means a lot to me.”

Vieira was so upset that she visited Ronga’s grave Sunday.

“At first, I didn’t believe it was true,” Vieira said. “It was really upsetting to hear that he was gone. He always taught us to have fun and enjoy the game. All he wanted was the best for us.”

It’s a huge loss for Harrison softball. They all loved their coach. He changed the culture and had the program going in the right direction. I definitely feel he has built the foundation. He put in some nice work here.”

Vieira said that she will forever remember her coach.

“He will be with me every game next season,” Vieira said. “He will be in my heart.”

Ronga ended his softball coaching career with a record of 490 wins and 142 losses.

It’s sad to think Ronga fell just 10 wins shy of the magical 500-win plateau. It’s also sad to think that Carmine’s gone. He will be sorely missed.

An outwardly turned or sagging eyelid is known as an “ectropion,” which may develop due to agerelated tissue relaxation. As the wet, conjunctival surface of the inner eyelid is left exposed and vulnerable, excessive tearing, a gritty feeling in the eye, crusting of the eyelid, mucus discharge, and inflammation of the eye can develop. Left untreated, ectropion can lead to corneal dryness and irritation, which may pave the way for eye infections, corneal abrasions, or corneal ulcers.

While artificial tears can provide temporary relief, surgical treatment of age-related ectropion involves shortening and tightening the lower eyelid. This usually involves an incision at the outside corner of the eyelid and reattachment of the eyelid to underlying tissues and the

upper eyelid.

Traditional program wins Kearny Little League World Series

T

here have been two phrases synonymous with success when it comes to Kearny Little League baseball.

Those phrases are “Rick’s Auto Body” and “Witt family.”

Well, sure enough, those terms are at the top of the heap once again this year, as Rick’s Auto Body captured the Kearny Little League World Series last week, defeating Coccia Realty in two straight

games in the best-of-three series, winning the first game, 6-5, and the second one, 11-8.

For years, the Rick’s Auto Body domination was spearheaded by head coach and former league president Joe Witt.

But when Joe moved to neighboring North Arlington, he had to step down from his duties as both coach of Rick’s and league president.

So Joe did the best thing possible. He turned over the coaching duties of Rick’s to his brother, Tom. Sure enough this season,

Tom Witt did a masterful job molding his group of 12 young men, ages 12 and under, into champions.

“I don’t know where the success comes from,” Witt said, obviously being modest.

Quite frankly, it comes from dedication and hard work.

“Well, we do practice a lot,” Witt said. “When the kids get to the field, they’re there to play baseball. All of the kids show up every practice. There are no excuses. They come to practice, they try very hard and you see the results.”

“I wasn’t expecting too much,” Witt said. “We only had two 12-year-old kids.”

However, Witt saw some promise.

“Our balance was pretty good,” Witt said. “Although we had a very young team, with four 10-year-olds and two 9-year-olds, I thought there was a good mix. When you have a young team like that, you’re usually rebuilding. But we had four 10-yearolds who went in and played right away.”

Another strength to Rick’s Auto Body is the team’s pitching staff.

“As anyone knows, pitching in Little League is 95% of the game,” Witt said.

Witt can begin with his two 12-year-old standouts, namely Billy McChesney and Trayton Witt, Tom’s son.

McChesney is a left-handed flame thrower.

“He’s our ace,” Witt said.

“He can throw pretty hard for his age.”

The younger Witt is a rising star, much like his older

brother, T.J., and his cousins before him.

“Trayton is more of a control pitcher,” the elder Witt said. “He’s around the plate.”

The other pitchers are 11-year-old Joey Rocco and 10-year-old Kyle Watson.

Rocco is another lefty. How many Little League teams have two left-handed pitchers at their disposal?

“We’re very lucky with our pitching depth and balance,” Coach Witt said. “With the pitch count, you need to have pitching depth.”

The pitch count rules came into play in the second game of the World Series, when young Watson had to come in for a relief stint.

“He came in and shut the door,” Witt said of young Watson. “With the kids having to come out, you have to be careful who you’re pitching. Having four pitchers goes a long way.”

Rick’s Auto Body doesn’t have one starting catcher. In fact, all four of the pitchers _ including the lefties _ don the catching gear and get

behind the dish.

“When one is pitching, the other is catching,” Witt said.

“There isn’t just one who I can say is the catcher. All four caught.”

Rocco spent most of his time at first base when he wasn’t pitching.

“He’s a good clutch hitter,” Witt said of Rocco. “Whenever we needed a clutch hit, he’s our man.”

The second baseman is 10-year-old Jayden Morales.

“He came into his own this year,” Witt said of Morales. “He just started to hit the ball. He came along nicely. I’m glad to have him for two more years.”

The shortstop was either the younger Witt or Watson.

“Both of them are our leading hitters,” the elder

Witt said. “It was neck and neck between the two.”

The third baseman is 11-year-old Paul Pepe, who is a slick fielder at the hot corner.

“As a hitter, he puts the ball in play,” Witt said. “He came up with a few clutch hits for us.”

The left field duties were shared by 9-year-old Jayden Vazquez and 11-year-old Gustavo Lima, who was a first-time player in Little League baseball.

Shane Byrne, a 10-year-old player, was the centerfielder.

“He’s also a pitcher,” Witt said. “I think he’s going to be a pitching prospect for us for the next three years.”

Right field is shared by Elijah Castro, a 10-year-old player who delivered some

key hits, and 9-year-old Isaac Moya, who is a lefthanded bat.

“He can slap the ball and go the other way,” Witt said of Moya. “He’s also a pitching prospect.”

The team’s assistant coaches were Dan Watson, Frank Goresh and Dan McChesney.

Needless to say, it was a happy time for Rick’s once again. It’s hard to keep count of how many championships the Witt family has won coaching Rick’s.

“It’s been in our family for the last 45 years,” Tom Witt said. “It started with my father (Tom Witt Sr. and then went to Joey and now to me.

All these years and we’re still going.”

obituaries@theobserver.com Jorge E. Osorio Jorge E. Osorio, of East Newark, died at home, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, June 19.

He was 104.

Funeral services were under the direction of Mulligan Funeral Home, Harrison. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Anthony’s Church, East Newark. His interment took place in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Born in Tolima, Colombia, Jorge came to the United States 44 years ago. He has resided in Harrison and East Newark since 1979. He was the owner of a wholesale food distribution company in Cali, Colombia, for many years.

Jorge was a very active member of his community.

He enjoyed playing the lottery on a daily basis. He enjoyed a wonderful Father’s Day with his family before his passing.

Predeceased by his wife, Rosa Osorio (2006), he is survived by his loving daughters, Dalila Gonzalez (Carlos), Amanda Gomez, Carmen Britez and Rosa Gonzalez; his cherished grandchildren, Sandra Cobo, George Covo (Nathalie), Alex Covo (Iggy), Carlos Covo (Melissa), Alexandra Gomez, Alex Britez (Julia), Loren Britez, Eileen Davila (Alex) and Edward Gonzalez; his dear great-grandchildren, Nicoloas Covo, Jordon Covo, Joseph Ebneth, Ashley Ebneth, Jennifer Perez, Christopher Perez, Grace Covo, Nathan Covo, Micaela Britez, Julian Britez, Kai Covo, Adrian Isaza and Isaiah Davila; and, he is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also predeceased by his daughters, Lucila and Ana Osorio; a grandchild, Ana Gomez; his mother, Elvira Osorio; and brothers Arturo and Pedro Osorio.

KPD: Beer, booze & a snooze I KEARNY – n what appears to be a recurring event in town, police last week received yet another report of yet another vehicle sitting in the middle of a street with yet another driver slumped over the wheel.

At 10 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, police said, Officer Chris Medina responded to the 60 block of Maple St. and there indeed did find a 1999 Jeep, its engine running, and its operator -- Fernando Orozco, 35, of West New York -- in dreamland.

Police said Medina opened the door to rouse the driver, who “woke up, looked at him, and went back to sleep.”

Reportedly, the odor of alcohol emanated both from the man and his Jeep, and several cans of Modello beer were in plain view. When Medina finally managed to fully awaken the driver and asked for his credentials, police said Orozco produced registration and an insurance card, but, in lieu of his license, a Chase Visa debit card.

With Officers David Bush and Rich Pawlowski as backup, FSTs were conducted and

Orozco was charged with DWI. In a search incident to arrest, police said, three 50 milliliter (the small sample-size) bottles of Fireball Whisky were found in his pocket. Reportedly recovered from the car were: two empty 12 oz. cans of Modello, on the front seat; two more empty 12 oz. cans on the rear seat; a half-empty 12 oz. and a half-empty 24 oz. can, both in the center console, and five more small Fireball bottles on the passenger seat.

Orozco was given an Alcotest at headquarters and, in addition to DWI, was charged with operating a MV while in possession of open containers of alcohol and impeding the flow of traffic.

••• Other recent reports from the Kearny police blotter included the following: June 18 Shortly after midnight, Officer Mina Ekladious observed two men -- whom he was “reasonably certain” had warrants -walking near Johnston and Passaic Aves., ran a warrants check and, with back-up Officers Tim Castle and Esteban Gonzalez, arrested Arturo Deas, 46, of

East Orange, and Sam Domino, 69, of Newark.

Police said Deas had six warrants, all for contempt: three from Bloomfield, $250, $250 and $124; one from Linden, $500; one from Trenton, $3,500 (or 10%); and one from Hillside -- dating to 2007! -- $259. Domino had only one, $250, out of Bloomfield, but in a search incident to arrest reportedly was found to have a glass crack pipe and was additionally charged with possession of CDS paraphernalia. The two were booked at HQ and the various jurisdictions were notified.

June 19 Vice officers, at Johnston and Passaic at 1 p.m., spotted Damian Fumero, 32, of Kearny, whom they believed to have been involved in an earlier drug transaction. When they left their car, police said, Fumero started “frantically stuffing wax folds into his mouth” and began to run. The officers chased him, tackled him to the ground and ordered him to spit out the folds, but he reportedly refused and continued to resist.

He was eventually subdued and cuffed, but police said he had swallowed the evidence -allegedly two folds of heroin.

At HQ , police said, the suspect refused medical attention from the Kearny EMS, which had been summoned there.

KPD officers, however, who had come into contact with blood from scrapes and cuts on his arms, were tested for HIV. Fumero was charged with possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia, hindering apprehension and resisting arrest.

June 20 At 10:30 a.m., Walmart security alerted the KPD that a shoplifter had just fled with $225 worth of merchandise. Armed with the suspect’s description, Det. Bryant Obie, with Officer Jordenson Jean as back-up, spotted and detained Kevin Hobby, 59, of Newark, on Harrison Ave., where he was reportedly identified by store personnel.

When searched, police said, Hobby was found to have a partially consumed bottle of Travelers Club gin, became irate when the cops confiscated it and asked repeatedly to be allowed to finish drinking the

contents. The requests were denied.

Hobby reportedly was also found to have a no-bail NCIC warrant issued by the Essex County Sheriff’s Office and, after being processed at HQ , was shipped to the Hudson County Jail.

••• At 1 p.m., HQ received a report that a white van had hit a parked vehicle at Bergen and Highland Aves. and fled north on Belgrove Drive. Units searched the area and, at Oakwood Ave, and Belgrove, Sgt. Glenn Reed -- with back-up Officers Ben Wuelfing and Sean Wilson -- pulled over a white 2001 Chevy Astrovan, operated

by Pedro Simoes, 41, of Elizabeth.

Police said Simoes had glazed eyes and slurred speech and following an interview by drugrecognition expert Wuelfing and FSTs, was arrested on a DUI charge. He was taken to HQ for additional testing and also charged with DUI in a school zone, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident. – Karen Zautyk
